Some of the lines that make people think Percy is stupid are dry, sarcastic comments and they just don't get it. He isn't the stupid one - it's you boo.

I'm absolutely in love with the first 2 episodes, but I hate that they are down playing Percy's intelligence!

Percy is SMART!!!!

He figures out so many things on his own in the books that are being explicitly explained to him in the show. He definitely fits the bill to be our resident beloved himbo, and is constantly using it to his advantage, but he is far from being stupid. While he might not be an expert on mythology, he's a fast learner and uses the knowledge he gains to navigate his new world more effectively.

Moments like when Grover mentioned that his mom isn't actually gone really affect the decisions he first made for his quest. I get that the creators wanted to make sure the audience knows that his mom was his main reason for going on this journey, but there could've been another way to show this while still maintaining Percy's agency.

It also diminishes the first real showing of his fatal flaw. His loyalty to his mother is one of the main pillars that make up his character. While they displayed that loyalty and adoration in other ways (I will never recover from him praying to her in the woods or the "I'm Sally Jackson's son" moment), Grover having to intentionally implant the idea that they can bring her back because she is not really dead does undermine Percy's unwavering determination in the book to bring her back regardless of if she is truly dead or not.

That's why he had low self esteem throughout the series and was unable to recognize annabeth's feelings towards him as romantic?

I like book Percabeth, but I specifically think Percy is either black or Hispanic. The sea green eyes, and black hair are important to me, as are Annabeth's eyes, which I think the show preserves?

I also think that Percy is actually pretty philosophical sometimes, in both versions. Annabeth making fun of him also makes sense though.

why has everyone just decided to disregard everything that makes percy interesting?

we are always begging for a main character who is given a life outside of being a main character and then we were given percy jackson, a demigod in the summer, saving the world and looking good doing it, but is also just a kid.

he skateboards and collects them, he listens to punk rock and alternative rock (are they the same thing or is punk rock a sub-genre?) but doesn't dress 'alt' (like thalia) and has anger issues and has been kicked out of multiple schools for said anger issues, some of them being (court-ordered) military schools.

he also has problems with authorities who abuse their power (gabe, the gods, the nypd etc.) and will not hesitate to call you out on your bullshit no matter how powerful and important and feared you are.

but he has morals and doesn't do things without reason. he has a level of maturity and integrity that isn't even present in most adults. he is really smart and gets better grades than annabeth, and is the most considerate person you will ever meet. he is humble and never tries to be the center of attention.

he's not the most optimistic person in the entire world, but he tries to find reasons to be happy in really crappy situations (when they were traversing Tartarus and he was so happy that annabeth was with him that he started smiling).

he is always grateful for everything he has and tries to show genuine interest in all the things that interest his loved ones, even if they bore him to death (like annabeth with her architecture).

and we completely erase that for some reason to make him nothing but 'annabeth chases' boyfriend,' and, well he is her boyfriend, and he's very proud of that fact, but he is his own person as well.

people get really mad when we erase all of annabeth's character to make her nothing more than percy jacksons' girlfriend but we do it to percy all the time.

Reminder that Percy is actually were smart! And we need to stop portraying him clueless and needing annabeth's help for everything!

actually I also wanna talk about the part where Percy convinces Bob to kill Hyperion because even though Percy never says anything outright sinister, the way he handles the entire situation with such cool ease, playing on Bob’s emotions... its so insane???

Because Annabeth’s reaction to the three of them encountering Hyperion reforming is: “oh this is bad we need to get out of here” She knows if Bob remembers himself, that it's not going to play out well for Percy and her. She also thinks about how they're being pursued and don't have a lot of time. Her solution to the problem, seemingly, is to leave.

But Percy's solution is to work the situation to his advantage. He re-affirms Bob's loyalty to him:

Percy then re-establishes Bob's moral code: "Some monsters are good. Some are bad. This Titan is bad. He tried to kill me and a lot of people. He's not good like you are."

And it ends with Percy leaving the choice of whatever to do with Hyperion to Bob but of course, is it really what Bob chose to do? Bob decides to kill Hyperion. It's not what he may have done, if Percy hadn't intervened. But it's exactly what Percy was oh-so-sweetly leading Bob to do.

And listen, I'm not claiming that it was exactly morally bankrupt of Percy to take advantage of a once-evil titan who could get him and his girlfriend through hell in one piece. Percy, Annabeth, they manipulate monsters and enemies all the time. Annabeth ended the previous book with manipulating Arachne into weaving her own web. So it's not exactly like she's against using manipulative tactics, in theory.

But Bob, at this point, is not just some monster. He is so painfully sincere in his belief in Percy and their friendship, so yes, it does feel a bit sinister whenever Percy uses Bob... and he really uses Bob.

And I think what makes the scene so unsettling, it isn't just that Percy manipulated Bob, its how well Percy manipulated him. He manipulates Bob so well that Percy doesn't even have to kill Hyperion... because Bob does it for him. He manipulates Bob so well, that Annabeth couldn't tell if Percy was purposefully trying to manipulate the situation. (Newsflash, he most definitely was). Like holy shit.

Sometimes... I get mad because people continue to call Percy stupid even when his grades improve, and he shows his intelligence over and over again because he makes silly jokes sometimes and struggles with spelling and focus because that is what people do. I know - that's what they did to me.

The only reason you think Annabeth is smart is because you are told to, and Percy sees it, and he tells you, he calls it out in her. You'd be calling her stupid, too, if you approached her the same way you approach Percy.

you don't realise how hurtful your comments can be. Percy has been seen to be a deep thinker and INCREDIBLY intelligent. Stop making a character into something they are not.

Then again you won't because people are people, online and off. And they will continue to willfully misunderstand people because it's easier than getting to know who they really are.

believe me, i am the BIGGEST defender of percy being smart.

annabeth says it herself in the demigod files, he’s not dumb, he just ACTS dumb. because he thinks he’s dumb. but his instincts are usually spot on.

and when percy thinks things through, you see how intelligent he really is. the thing with percy is that he often speaks before thinking. like “feast for tuna.” or remember when hazel mentioned a sturgeon fish and he almost went “surgeon?” but then thought it through? he’s a silly guy and he’s so relatable and sometimes says his immediate thoughts without thinking. that’s why he comes off as dumb, but he’s actually incredibly intelligent and if you scroll through my blog you’ll see why i think that and how strongly i think that.

now about my posts you mentioned lol

1. my dad was a rocket scientist. i’m not joking. he’s a genius. and he cannot remember the name of a SINGLE one of my friends, no matter how many times he’s met them. not when i was a kid and not now. even if they went on a literal vacation with us. he also forgets things all the time. his memory can be AWFUL in some aspects (but in others it’s sharper than a tack). it doesn’t make him dumb, he just has a lot more important things going on in that brain of his. it’s not being dumb, it’s being a dad. and percy gives me major dad vibes.

2. the bear paw post was actually supposed to show him being secretly smart. that’s why i had annabeth at the end go “to be fair, he’s right.” him asking the stingray was a comical representation of how percy does things without thinking. that post both shows how percy appears as dumb, but is actually usually onto something that no one else realized. he’s smarter than he or anyone else thinks.

i promise, i am a huge advocator for percy being extremely smart. but like i said in my tags, he can be very oblivious. but that’s not being dumb, that’s being a guy (or just human). also having adhd. i know this because 1) every smart guy i know is still very oblivious about things and 2) i (not a guy) have adhd and people often think im oblivious to things, but its just that i don’t focus on certain things like other people do. i have a whole lot more going on in my head than they know.

you will never once hear me say the words “percy is stupid.” he may act stupid, he may think he’s stupid, others may think he’s stupid, but he is FAR from it. his intelligence is extremely underestimated. but that’s okay in a way, because it gives him the upper hand. he has a hidden power, which makes for some real badass percy jackson scenes.
