Mao Saigo Wins a Thriller in Houston

Mao Saigo, the 23-year old from Japan who won the 2024 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year Award won her first-career major at the Chevron Championship in a playoff.

It is a bit difficult to concisely breakdown the chaotic finish to the 2025 Chevron Championship, played at the Club at Carlton Woods. The playoff included major champions Ariya Jutanugarn, Hyo Joo Kim and Ruoning Yin, plus two players looking for first-career victories in Lindy Duncan and Saigo.

Saigo got to the playoff despite some massive struggles on the day. She shot +2, bringing the leading score down from -9 to -7. She came in clutch when it mattered most though, making a putt of decent length for birdie on 18 to work her way into the mix.

Hyo Joo Kim got into the playoff doing what she does best, playing solid, not flashy golf. She hit all 13 fairways and had all pars from hole nine to the finish. She shot -2 for the day.

Lindy Duncan, at one point, looked to be in good position, but everything went wrong on hole 15, leading to back-to-back bogeys that set her back. She shot +1 for the day even though she had four birdies in regulation.

Ruoning Yin brought the flash with some terrific shot making down the stretch that led to a birdie on 18. At the time it didn't seem that score would hold but her -1 round was good enough to keep her in contention.

Finally, we get to two-time major champion Ariya Jutanugarn. Jutanugarn looked poised to win on 18, sitting next to the par 5 green in two shots, holding a one-stroke lead. She duffed her chip though, not even advancing it much more than a yard. After a chip long, she missed her par putt, opening everyone up.

While Lindy Duncan effectively took herself out of the playoff with a poor third shot, everyone else seemed in play. Especially after Yin, the only one to hit the green in two, ran an eagle putt well past. Kim, Jutanugarn and Yin though all missed their birdie putts, clearing the way for Saigo to tap her short putt in for the win.

Saigo is the third player to win a major playing under the Japanese flag in the last five majors. Only two had ever done so previously.

Hmmm taking this in two ways:

Proud to have finished as in, proud that I managed to finish it has to be Wander the Drifting Roads, which is one of my two long fics. I was editing while I was posting and caught up to the point I'd edited to, which caused me disproportionate stress haha. For a minute, I wasn't sure I was ever going to get that last chapter into a state I was okay with posting. I briefly considered walking away, but I am so glad I didn't!! It is still one of my favorite things I've written.

Proud that I wrote in general is probably Palimpsest, which 1) I still feel clever over the name and 2) that section of act 2 remains the crunchiest Dragon Age thing to me (it is just so!!!! *paragraph deleted*) and 3) I love writing from inside Fenris's head and I am very, very proud of how the fic came out in general.

*gets out the red string* okay so you know how there are a bunch of statues of people in random poses that don't really look like they're carved from anything? and how Solas froze a ton of people in Trespasser in stone? well, in my fic The Scourge of Sundermount, the Lavellan there comes across a left-behind remnant of Mythal's soul in a bit of the amulet Merrill used to bring her back and she becomes a sort of Medusa-esque figure, capable of (involuntarily) turning people to stone with a remnant of that power. I have a hard time reading that story because it is very sad, but I do feel clever about the details in the way I situated that AU.

Was collecting Nix treasures last night and my cat, Dmitri, spotted Nix walking around. He went straight into hunter mode and slowly stepped onto my desk to better observe this prey-shaped creature. As Nix approached the corner of the screen Dmitri did that little butt wiggle then slapped the TV. But the best part was right when he did it Nix moved off camera and Dmitri thought he'd gotten him, and started sniffing around my desk and glancing down at the floor to see where his prey fell. It was hilarious!

Unironically would love to explore this concept in a more serious tone as well. Karlach having met or at least seen Durge around Gortash's home. They were always odd and off-putting, but so was most of Gortash's crowd. Still, their presence was oppressive and she sometimes had to consider them as a threat against him. They could be some noble trying to seize power through him. Or they could be just another bed warmer with mindless intentions. Regardless, they were on her radar. Then of course the Hells happened and after those 10 agonizing years she's finally free, and who does she see first things first? Durge, that same motherfucker who used to haunt the halls of Gortash's manor. Gortash's manor. Karlach doesn't believe them when they claim to not remember the past, convenient amnesia is just a bullshit excuse cowards use but she slowly realizes they're dead serious. Beyond serious, they barely even know who they are. She won't be finding Gortash through them, but maybe she could turn his former adversary into his enemy, give that bastard an extra kick in the ass with some betrayal of the inner kind. However Durge begins to get their memories back, each one more vile than the last. They chose not to tell Karlach about their memories of Gortash, knowing that it may send her into a spiral (justifiably). But each memory spells out a clearer picture as Durge realizes they were not just one of Gortash's dolls. If anything, Durge had some form of power over the man, their mutual obsession fueling a strange and twisted affair. They were neither of each others lapdogs, they were equals. Eventually Karlach finds out and she ends up as the one feeling betrayed. Gortash's "nearest and dearest" was RIGHT THERE the whole time, they were someone she even considered a friend. She regrets giving them the benefit of the doubt, she should've known better than to trust any who aligned, formerly or currently, with that bastard. Maybe they didn't remember who they were at first, but eventually their former self would return.

And then that leaves it up to Durge, if they wish to betray their former relationship with Gortash for the sake of their new ally. Or if they want to finish what they started and let Karlach be just another casualty in their quest to greatness. If they pick Karlach it won't be easy, she will be broken from her shit life and it will take more than a little convincing that they're on her side. Undoubtably she will have Wyll to support her, but there's only so much a shoulder to cry on can offer, especially given what she's been through. Durge won't be forgiven, at least not quickly, but if they put in the time, put in the effort, they could forge something new. Perhaps forgiveness is unattainable, but allyship is possible. But if they pick Gortash I feel it would be oh so simple. He was practically waiting for them to return, every since he got the news his beloved slayer was still alive. Who better to top of their grand scheme than the mastermind themself, Gortash's own lover (if they even dared to call each other such... and perhaps, with all this power in their midst, they now could). They're already at the climax of their story, why back away now? Why keep the people waiting? This is their grand finale.

Fandom friends, we have won the battle (although we definitely did not win the war).

Yesterday, I wrote this post about lore.fm, an AI scraping app that was being marketed as an accessibility tool. Now, the person that has been promoting this app decided, in the light of plenty of backlash, to backtrack and pull it down, as they "feel uncomfortable" with how authors reacted to it.

Of this video, it's very important to highlight a couple of things:

the video is 3 long minutes of guilt-tripping: she keeps repeating that her (and her team, whose existence wasn't disclosed until yesterday: this app was marketed as being a sole woman's pet project) wanted to do good and create an accessibility tool. This comes with the underlying layer that all the authors who rightfully decided to defend their creations are ableist and in the wrong. It's a manipulation tactic;

there is no acknowledgement of the fact that the app was created by a team that specifically works to create apps that generate AI stories;

there is no explanation as to where the money to fund this app is coming from, and we all know that, when you're not paying for the product, you are the product;

this is backtracking, not genuine conversation: since the other day, the videos promoting this app went viral on r/Ao3, and plenty of people began contacting team@lore.fm to ask for their works to not be included. Then, the news spread on Tumblr too. They originally thought they could get away with "legally" stealing as much material as possible, and had to cut the project short because authors were doing everything in their power to stop them. The decision to take the app off for "reassessment" doesn't come from the goodness of their hearts.

At this point of the conversation, I think it's clear that the entirety of the project was relying on the perceived naïveté of fanfic readers and writers, who are oftentimes seen and stereotyped as being silly teens and not adults with real jobs and real knowledge of the law. When they saw dozens, if not hundreds, of authors contacting them to ask their works to not be featured, some of them threatening legal consequences, they had no other choice but to backtrack.

For now, the issue is closed, but don't think it'll be forever. Know your rights, even if you're "just" a fic author, and defend yourself and your works too from these scummy companies that see us as nothing but machines that churn out material for them to steal and profit off of with no consequences.
