My Fenhawke Headcannon (for my Jane):

Fenris is broody and seems to be against touch because of his marks, but I like to imagine that once he gets closer to Hawke and says he loves her, he sort of likes it when she touches him. If she runs her hands down his arms or over his chest or touch his neck, he doesn’t react badly anymore and actually leans into it.

I just wanted to say that bc I’m craving Fenhawke content in this day.

So okay. I thought wayyy too hard about this and had A LOT of difficulty choosing because I actually really enjoy rereading my own fics 😅 but I did my best! Answers below the cut for anyone who wants to keep reading:

- Fall Into The Tide: Dragon Age, Sten/f!Mahariel, ~54k words. The premise of this fic is that Mahariel decides on a whim to follow Sten on his maritime journey back to Par Vollen. This was actually the first fic that came to mind as a favourite, and to date, I feel that it's the best thing I've ever written; I'm really proud of Sten's characterization and the emotional beats. I still cry like a baby every time I reread it LOL.

- Lovers In A Dangerous Time: Dragon Age, Fenris/f!Hawke, ~525k words. This is my Fenris the Inquisitor fic. I just finished rereading it and I had a lot of "wow I wrote this? Good job me" moments while reading it! 😂

- Until We Meet Again: The Witcher, Geralt/f!Reader, ~250k words. The point of this fic was that I personally want to fuck Geralt so I made it everyone else's problem BAHAHA. This fic completely mutated from self-indulgent smut to accidentally-falling-in-love in a totally unplanned way, and I'm so thrilled with how it turned out!

- Just Hold On, We're Going Home: Samurai Champloo, Mugen/Fuu/Jin, ~38k words. SamCham is my favourite anime, and the end of it is so heartwrenching to me, even though it's a happy ending. So I wrote this fic to heal myself 🤣 This fic was entirely a gift I wrote for myself on the assumption that no one would actually read it, and it's been lovely to see how many people were craving a poly happy ending like I was!

- The Love That Grows From Violence: Dragon Age, Felassan/f! Lavellan, ~181k words. This is a post-Trespasser fic where a bitter Lavellan falls in love with Felassan, who was made Tranquil rather than killed in the Fade. This fic holds a hugely special place in heart partly because the idea was BRILLIANT (it was suggested to me by a wonderful reader-friend!), and because writing this became my cozy escape during the worst of COVID. I'm really proud of some of the emotional beats in this fic and the lore aspects, and I really hope that Veilguard will not end up proving me entirely wrong or I might just die LOL. 

HONOURABLE MENTIONS (I CAN'T HELP IT, THIS WAS REALLY HARD):

- Even The Hardiest Desert Blooms Need To Get Wet Sometimes: Horizon Forbidden West, Drakka/Aloy, ~365k words. I JUST REALLY LOVE DRAKKA, OKAY? I JUST LOVE HIM. A LOT. I had a ball writing every chapter of this fic just because I adore the disaster Desert gremlin, and I always love the opportunity to write texting in fics, which I got to do here a lot, so this fic makes me a very happy girl 🥰 The only reason this didn't make my top five is that I don't actually reread it very often!

- Inadvisable: Dragon Age, triple romance for Solas/f!Lavellan, Abelas/f!Lavellan, Felassan/f!Lavellan (different Lavellans LOL), ~668k words. This is my modern AU university fic collaboration with my beloved friend and artist Elbenherz. IT WAS SO HARD NOT PUTTING THIS FIC IN THE TOP-FIVE; the only reason it didn't make the cut is because it was either this one or The Love That Grows From Violence, and I just have such cozy-fuzzy vibes/memories of writing TLGFV.

“Nessa?”

Tabris looked up from her book, momentarily confused.  She'd had time to indulge in reading for pleasure at Vigil’s Keep, and books in general had never been affordable in the alienage, but now that she'd left both of those lives behind, it was the first luxury she'd dove into. Surfacing from them was difficult though, and it took her nearly a full minute to remember who she was, and who she was pretending to be.  

She tucked the book in Anders’ desk and sat up.  “What's wrong?”  Fenris wouldn't be down here if there wasn't a problem.

“I…” He shifted his weight uneasily.  “You're an elf.  In a relationship with a human.”

She frowned.  Where is this going?  “That's true.”  

“Why do you - no.” Fenris shook his head.  “That is the wrong question.”  He sank to a nearby footstool, leaning forward to allow clearance for that enormous greatsword.  “You were there.  You heard what I said.”

What has magic touched that it doesn’t spoil?  She winced.  “Hard words to come back from.”

He wiped his face.  “Hadrianna… she tormented me.  For years.  I wonder sometimes if she put a demon inside me, to make me hate so much.  Hawke doesn’t deserve this… this poison lobbed at his family at every turn.  But I can’t seem to stop.” He met her eyes, expression soft and fearful, “How do you do it?  How do you look at him and not see only what you lost?  Only what was taken from you?  How can you throw away everything you gained for him?  For anyone?

Tabris grabbed a chair to pull it closer to him before sitting down.  “Fenris, what are you really asking?”  She could guess, of course, but to help, she needed him to say it.  Hawke had been flirting outrageously with him for years, and, recently, Fenris had begun to respond to it, though tentatively. 

“Just... Just tell me how to fix it – fix us; please,” he pleaded.  “Please just... Just tell me.  How can I be with… with anyone when this hate festers inside me?  How can I look him in the eyes after saying that?”  He flexed his hands.  “I was built to be a weapon; nothing more or less.  I know nothing of caring.”  Then, much more softly, he added, “of love.

Ah.  She caught his gauntleted fingers.  “If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be here.”  She chuckled softly and stood up.  “But if you want some practice…” She nodded toward the curtain that blocked off the private area of the clinic.  “I’ll show you.”

Fenris’ breath caught as he let her tug him to his feet.  “What about Anders?”

“He doesn’t own me,” she said.  “And no one owns you.  Not anymore.”

god someone help me find this da2 fic please it was f!hawke (a warrior i think) and it was fenhawke the relationship between leandra and hawke has been really shitty and hawke maybe isnt living at the estate anymore? (she might be living with fenris?) but fenris and the gang decide to stage a like intervention? in the Rose, I think, where they try to force hawke to 'reconcile' with her mom. Only Leandra just keeps saying shit to blame hawke for Carver dying and Bethany being in the gallows. and feeling extra guilty about it all, fenris ends up like, sneaking into the gallows to make Bethany respond to hawke's letters Ring any bells to anyone? I'm having major issues finding it again 😩

What's your favorite thing about fenris and hawke? Do you prefer m!hawke or f!hawke with fenris?

I love how both Fenris and Hawke are two broken people coming together. They're not there to fix each other, but they're there to support one another. Yes, you could say that's true for every Da 2 ship, and I agree. I just think Fenris' relationship and slowly coming to trust Hawke is so rewarding, especially because it's something he wouldn't otherwise experience. Isabela/Anders/Merrill have all had sources of happiness and or a form of love. Fenris hasn't. And for Hawke to offer that and Fenris to claim that is really beautiful to me. I don't really have a preference for m!Hawke vs f!Hawke, but I know the fandom seems to prefer Garett Hawke in general. Poor Marian seems so ignored from everything to promotional material to fandom. I know Purple m!Hawke is the most popular pairing with Fenris. I think it's a good pairing, but I have a special place in my heart for Marian. I like both, but I would like to see more with Marian x Fenris in addition to all the Garett Hawke content! Sorry if this rambling doesn't make sense! thank u for asking omg !!!! i have 3 worldstates loosely planned out which is a Lot for me since i have a tendency to get deeply (perhaps pathologically) attached to one worldstate and one pc lol. but im being brave abt it !

worldstate 1 is my canon worldstate, and the overarching theme for it is self-mythology/loss of personhood. i wont go into detail since i yap enough abt them already lol but i have elspeth (warrior f!cousland romancing alistair) cillian (a rogue m!hawke romancing anders) and ashara (a mage f!lavellan romancing/redeeming solas) all going into datv head first. my canon datv pc will likely be an elven archer f!rook romancing either davrin or taash hehe <3

second worldstate is all mages and obv thats the main theme i wanna have fun with

lucander amell (he/him, blood mage and spirit healer, romances morrigan) unassuming, distant, and polite and also kind of unnerving. used to being seen as a bad guy and is willing to act accordingly, but otherwise is a pretty decent, honorable man. does morrigan's ritual, kills the archdemon, leaves alistair a grey warden. doesn't become warden commander in awakening bc he goes into hiding from the wardens before they can ask too many questions abt the ritual and why hes still alive. he tracks down morrigan in the hopes of protecting her, and then stays with her and their son after that.

cecilia hawke (she/her, spirit healer mage, romances fenris) a blue!hawke who's sweet and motherly and soft spoken and has an enormous guilt complex/self hate for being a mage lol. carver joins the templars, and she later sides with them in act 3 and kills anders which </3 anyways. she survives here lies the abyss in dai and hopefully goes on to attend biweekly couples therapy with fenris <3

thomasin trevelyan (SOFTEST of launches on that name) (she/her, knight enchanter mage, romances cullen. maybe.) socially adept, politically cunning, with a love for the game and a desire to regain her place within the trevelyan family nobility. sides with the mages, doesn't drink from the well, negotiates a truce between celene/gaspard/briala, pardons the wardens, redeems solas, disbands the inquisition post trespasser. shes a good girl and she's got her head on straight!

might do a qunari f!rook mage to romance taash or davrin for datv! we'll see !

lastly my third worldstate places value on the eluvians so its very elfy or at least elf-adjacent. and also the lineage of ameridan > garahel > maherial and so on. i just think its neat . still VERY much underdeveloped tho so no names yet

i hate to say it. i HATE to say it. but if there's a way for me to make a solasmancing rook for datv i Will find a way in this worldstate for the comedic effect of antagonizing my m!trev. even if its just thru headcanons exclusively lol

Yes--not sure what is meant by "kind." M/F and F/F--soft and gentle, hard and fast, mildly kinky, plot-relevant and pwp, etc. A variety of smut, haha.

Not really. Crossovers aren't really my jam, but if I wrote one it would probably be Inquisition characters in Mass Effect (like a genre switch thing, not picked up and dropped into our solar system).

When I was like 13 on FF.net, yes. It's why I stopped writing fic until I was 28.

God. Don't ask me this haha. My first DA ship was Fenris/Hawke and it still lives so closed to my heart, but Cullen/Lavellan got me into the fandom and Zevran/Tabris brought me someone very dear to me. I don't think I could ever judge any of them by the merits of the ship alone at this point!

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Hmmm more than I'd like to admit :/ Probably The Red Crossing Arrangement, which is an arranged marriage/Halamshiral still belongs to the elves AU. It took so much more world building that my ability to write it slowly petered out. The odds are high that it will remain at roughly 80k for the foreseeable future (unless I suddenly want to get back to working out trade routes and governance and commerce, which is what did me in; I'm good at world-building culture on account of the degree and all, but the semantics of daily life don't really interest me as much) (tragically, this means the Adalene and Elandrin fix-it portions of this story may never be published :C and this does honestly make me so sad :C)

16. What are your writing strengths?

Voice and characterization/internal dialogue. I've been told that the canon characters I write feel very similar to canon and that's something I'm really proud of c:

Physical space. I forget to define the setting very, very frequently. It's the next thing I want to focus on in my writing, actually, when I get back into it!

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Eh. I think it can add flavor, especially in fantasy settings where the cultures and worlds are built dissimilarly to the real world. I don't think there's anything especially fun about not being able to discern what's happening in conversation---I think it's most effective when it's a handful of phrases that repeat (hello, I'm sorry, I love you, etc.) or when followed by a translation of some sort. As a lover of Latin, I especially find google translations very unreliable and often incorrect. Better to just italicize it and indicate it's another language, imo.

Pikapeppa's reading list for refreshing your Dragon Age memory: fic self-recs for those who don't have time to replay Inquisition

Lovers In A Dangerous Time: in a nutshell, Fenris is the Inquisitor with Hawke as his wingwoman. This fic is literally a novelization of DA:I with the mindset of "what would Fenris do?" It covers all of Inquisition and touches on every sidequest, and also covers all the DLCs: JOH, Descent, and Trespasser. So if you don't have time to replay Inquisition, you can basically read it here LOL. There is also some theorizing sprinkled throughout about various Big Unanswered Questions™ in Thedas!

The Love That Grows From Violence: this is a Felassan/f!Lavellan romance fic set post-Trespasser. For those who don't know, Felassan is a character in the novel The Masked Empire who was an agent of Fen'Harel, and whom Solas killed at the end of the novel. This fic addresses the questions: 1) what if Felassan was made Tranquil instead of being killed by Solas in the Fade? 2) What if Felassan and a bitter Solasmanced Lavellan fell in love? and 3) what if Felassan actually told us everything that Solas refused to share? This fic is my attempt to pull together the existing lore and meta (with references back to all the original sources) to try to answer as many Big Unanswered Questions™ as I could.

A meta post about the qunari that I put together after reading Tevinter Nights, with my own theories about how Sten might play into things. I also wrote a Sten/f!Mahariel fic that's set immediately post-Origins; it's a romantic tragedy, but it does contain some discusssions about the Qun that may be interesting to refresh our memories about the Qun/the qunari for when Veilguard drops.

A oneshot about Varric and Solas that I wrote after the very first Dreadwolf trailer dropped back in 2020. It seems relevant again now... LOL

Solavellan fic: pure smut and romance. In case you wanted to refresh your memory of how he captivated us in DAI -- or, alternately, if you didn't romance him and want to know why the Solavellans are the way we are LMAO, you can read my take on the romance. 🤣 I have two Solavellan series on AO3: one for my own Elia Lavellan, which has a sad ending, and for Elbenherz's Nare Lavellan, which is "unfinished" in the canon universe, but includes a modern AU with a happy ending.

Beyond that, I have written romance fic for a ton of pairings in Dragon Age if you're just looking for some smut and romance! Most Hits and Most Kudos: Riding the Bull (Rated M, F!Lavellan/Iron Bull)

I have written exactly three pieces of Dragon Age: Inquisition fanfiction, and this is one of them. I'm not thrilled to bits that this is my most seen and kudos'd fic because I wasn't overly enamoured with DA:I, but one of my favourite bits in it was the Iron Bull romance. I really liked how he created a safe space for the Inky with clear consent that let her just be for awhile.

please please please tell me about A Splinter of Light*

I love future nightmare au scenarios OBVIOUSLY

Gosh, right now A Splinter of Light is just a soup of ideas but I am so excited about tackling it. For those just tuning in, this is for the WIP Ask Game I posted before and I am talking about my Lost in the Future after In Hushed Whispers AU, A Splinter of Light which features my f!rogue Rose Trevelyan, my m!warrior Garrett Hawke, Dorian, Bethany, Lady Elegant, Felix, Carver, Alistair, Anders, Varric, Fenris, Dagna, Merrill, Flemythal, Samson, Calpernia, Corypheus... it's a big cast with a lot of cameos. At the start of the fic we already understand the following characters to be deceased: Cullen, Solas, Cassandra, Leliana, and Fiona.

First because it's my blorbos and I get to make them fall in love again (like they need encouragement).

But I'm tickled I'm just so jazzed thinking about all the ways the world is messed up, the breach having overtaken much of the sky. There's the canon ways that we know from In Hushed Whispers, and then other details I've just gone ahead with.

Dorian and Rose escape Redcliffe Castle when they fail to replicate Alexius' spell (who is dead) at start of fic and escape from Redcliffe castle by water in the bowels of the keep wearing the red lyrium amulets Alexius' lieutenants wore to safely move past demons. (Yes there will be effects).

They get scooped up off Lake Calenhad by Hawke and Co. who use the lake as a base of operations since demons cannot get to them there.

Thinking of alternating viewpoints between Hawke and Rose because they won't always be together in the fic, though the bits I have written are first person Rose POV. Might switch to third before I get too far.

Since I can't just let them be together, there are a whole lot of forces trying to keep these two apart. Not to mention a longtime occasional lover of Hawke who is really pissy about Rose showing up after all these years. "Your stupid dream was REAL!?"

First, Corypheus wants Rose. He still hasn't found his way into the Fade. So there's a chase element. He's got Samson and Calpernia and their respective crews on the case. When it becomes clear she's been hanging with Hawke they decide to separate into two groups.

Flemythal is my wildcard. The Goddess so to speak.

I might even send them both into the Fade?

I don't know. I am swimming in ideas for this fic. But there will be star-crossed love and smut and adventure and with any luck delicious bad guys we love to hate.

A lil snippet:

Hawke sits on a boulder at the edge of the lake where familiar sounds and sensations meet the alien stretch of sky above us, sallow and weak, sunlight filtered through the threadbare Veil. His knees are pulled up in front of him, one long arm wrapped around them. He tosses pebbles into the water over and over as if he’s trying to prove to himself he can have an impact on this wretched world. I know it’s his first loss in a while, but it was her. A friend and occasional lover. His oldest companion here besides Bethany. It feels presumptuous to approach him in this situation, but nobody else is and even though he puts on a good front like he prefers to suffer in silence, I sense he’d rather not be alone. “Do you mind if I sit with you?” I ask. He glances at me over his shoulder, the corner of his lips turning up slightly. It looks a little bit like relief. Perhaps I sensed correctly. “If you can tolerate me at the moment,” he answers. “I’m a bit of a bore.” I gather up a handful of rocks for him from the pebbly beach beside the rock and climb up to plop down beside him, holding out my offering. His eyes meet mine, a twinkle breaking through the melancholy and he picks up a stone from my palm and tosses it. “I’m sorry about Elegant,” I tell him. “I could see how close you were.” “We’ve been friends a long time. Were friends,” he corrects himself and then shakes his head, his lips turned in a bitter frown. “Maker.” He looks out across Lake Calenhad, stiff breezes whipping up tiny white caps on the small waves. The surface looks as muddled and green as the sky. “It’s my fault she came south.” “You can’t blame yourself for that,” I tell him. “She chose to join you.” “To clean up a mess I helped create.” “If anyone is to blame here besides Corypheus— it’s me. I was supposed to get back to 9:42 to warn everyone. Stop Alexius. Stop the Breach.” He almost smiles and then nudges me with his shoulder. “True. You really turned out to be a terrible Chosen One didn’t you?” he says, a smirk breaking through. “I was always a terrible Chosen One,” I tell him. “The Maker was amusing himself.” A silence opens up between us, and our guilt hangs in the air the way the gut-twisting bittersweet scent of red lyrium does occasionally when the winds die down. I glance over at him, admiring the beautiful cut of his profile against the ugly, altered backdrop.
