A letter to the youth of this country

To the youth that feel like their voices aren't being heard,

Please don't give up. I know that it is frustrating to be screaming at the top of your lungs and to be treated as though your words are still not loud enough to matter. I know that you are scared, that you are dying, and it still doesn't seem to be enough to create change. I know that it is disheartening, it is life changing, it is the type of thing that hardens hearts and will shape a generation.

Please don't let it shape you into a generation that thinks they can't change things. Please don't let it shape you into a generation that thinks they do not matter or that no matter what you say, how well you say it or the size of the stage in which you give your speech it will not be enough to change hearts, minds or laws. It is enough, and our time as the youth of this country will come. I beg of you to stay strong, to keep talking and organizing. I beg of you to persevere and let that be the trademark of your generation.

You are enough and you are changing minds and hearts, soon it will be enough to change laws and policies. Keep going. We believe you can do this and we support you.

There aren’t words to express how impressed I am with these youth. Older generations constantly disparage the younger ones, but these young men and women give me hope. So much hope. Especially Emma Gonzalez survivor of the shooting at Stoneman Douglas HS. Here is an excerpt from the speech she gave at a gun control rally today: “Every single person up here today, all these people should be home grieving. But instead we are up here standing together because if all our government and President can do is send thoughts and prayers, then it's time for victims to be the change that we need to see. [...] The people in the government who were voted into power are lying to us. And us kids seem to be the only ones who notice and our parents to call BS.Companies trying to make caricatures of the teenagers these days, saying that all we are self-involved and trend-obsessed and they hush us into submission when our message doesn't reach the ears of the nation, we are prepared to call BS. in relation to the parkland shooting. i’ve seen some tweets and posts where people compare these mass shootings to drunk driving and such. and i want to point out what absolute bullshit that is. the base purpose of alcohol is essentially pleasure. we make and drink alcohol because we like the feeling. the base purpose of a gun is DESTRUCTION. so yes, controlling a death machine is a must, in my opinion. gun control needs to happen, and tbh it should’ve happened right after sandy hook. it’s gone too far and i don’t think it’s fair that parents should be afraid to send their children to school because of the fear that someone could take away their life because the government refuses to take away “2nd amendment rights”. and while i’m there let me give my two cents about that. the 2nd amendment was written when the colonists here were being attacked by the natives (i won’t digress to my opinion on this). therefore they felt guns necessary for PROTECTION against people ATTACKING THEM. ok so who’s attacking you right now? someone else with a gun? i hope that the chicken and the egg issue is obvious here. anyways, i’m just hoping and praying that this country finds the strength to take the steps needed to protect its citizens, because this is the greatest country in the world imo and americans deserve to feel SAFE, especially at school. my thoughts are with those affected, my heart hurts for you and i hope you get the justice and solace you deserve after this dreadful day 💖
