Hey if you‘re up for a tag game (Just ignore this is not) my questions are here :)
🧡 - Favorite non-Shepard pairings? Why do you love this/those pairing(s)?
🎗️- Something you would have liked to see more of in the games?
Fave pairings> Kolfer and Kriortez, aka Kolyat x Feron, and Thane Krios x Steve Cortez. (Also Pavan and Mickey, which are two total OC's, Blaise Shepard's dads.) They are all heavy headcanoning, I think that's what appeals to me about rarepairs so much though. You've got some bare bones to work with and then can adapt the stories and flesh out the characters to fit your own tastes. I'll try to give a brief overview. kolFer is: tall pouty prickly lad who is an introverted nerd annoyed to find he's fallen for the charms of short muscly extroverted flirty king, even more shocked to discover Feron isn't just a big old flirt but genuinely adores the ever loving shit out of him and they fall wildly in love. The more Kol pouts, the more Fer loves him. They work together as agents of the shadowbroker Liara. Kriortez: No one will ever sum it up better than @zet-sway did: "I'm just imagining their relationship. Both of them, professional as fuck. House is impeccably clean. They're well spoken and dependable. And the moment their spark is lit they're on each other like white on rice, handprints on the windshield, clothes on the floor, [redacted to keep this SFW lol] Heart eyes for days." I actually spend way more time thinking about non Shepard pairings than I do Shepard pairings. Like don't get me wrong I adore Shepard and my two Keahi and Blaise are my special blorbos, but I think the freedom of having less strict storyline beats with KolFer lets my imagination really go down a rabbithole (which is also probably why my Shepards are both pretty AU compared to the games). Something I'd like to see more of? More interactions that don't involve the main character. Those moments in 3 where you'd find squadmates chatting. The conversations in the rover in andromeda. All the interesting NPC's on the citadel. That stuff sparks the imagination and fleshes out the world so much and I love it, can't get enough, and would love to see more. Especially with the less explored species. Give me that juicy hanar lore, some elcor drama. A world that adapts and changes over time is always incredible too, though I know engine limitations are a thing. Andromeda hinted at that being a thing, but really all you saw was empty planet, then inhabited planet. Would be awesome to see some stages in between, growth and change each time you visit a place, some consequences to your actions.
(and sorry it took a while to answer this@drelldreams! Thank you for the asks <3)

Intel Lunar Lake CPU: Powering Next-Gen Copilot+ PCs
Tumblr media
Intel Lunar Lake CPU
Intel’s next generation of client CPUs, code-named Intel Lunar Lake, will power over 80 new laptop designs from over 20 OEMs starting in Q3 2024, just in time for the holidays. These processors will deliver AI performance on a worldwide scale for Copilot+ PCs. As soon as an upgrade is released, Intel Lunar Lake will receive the Copilot+ experiences, such as Recall. With Intel Lunar Lake added, and building on the popularity of Intel Core Ultra processors, Intel expects to ship over 40 million AI PC chips this year.
Lunar Lake Intel
Intel Lunar Lake and Copilot+, together with the industry’s largest library of software enablement for the CPU, GPU, and NPU, and with x86 architecture’s dependable compatibility, promise to give the most competitive joint client hardware and software offering in Intel’s history
What an AI computer
A neural processing unit (NPU), graphic processing unit (GPU), and central processing unit (CPU) are the three components of an AI PC, and each one has unique AI acceleration capabilities. Rather of transferring data to be processed on the cloud, an NPU is a specialised accelerator that effectively tackles AI and machine learning (ML) activities immediately on your PC. The need for AI PCs is growing as the desire to automate, optimise, and streamline PC processes increases.
Use Intel Core Ultra Processors on your PC to experience the power of AI. You could be able to increase your creativity, productivity, and security with the AI PC. Intel is transferring AI apps from the cloud to PCs, enhancing privacy and lowering reliance on pricey data centres, all while being inspired by market trends. Because Intel simplifies AI software development, you can focus on what counts.
The AI PC Era
The advent of the AI PC marks a turning moment in the history of the PC industry, a time when software improved by ML and AI algorithms is becoming more widely available. These apps enable users to produce music, create art, combine knowledge, and work more efficiently. With strong architectures for the neural processing unit (NPU), graphics processing unit (GPU), and central processing unit (CPU) to maximise the speed and power efficiency of AI applications, Intel is leading this shift.
Improving Computer Experiences
Through the AI PC Acceleration programme, access to Intel’s vast bench of technical expertise will be made possible for focused software optimisations and tuning based on go-to-market prospects, ISV demands, and core development tools and software developer kits like OpenVINO.
Intel will improve PC audio effects, content creation, gaming, security, streaming, video collaboration, and more by working with over 100 ISVs on over 300 AI-accelerated features, including Adobe, Audacity, BlackMagic, BufferZone, CyberLink, DeepRender, Fortemedia, MAGIX, Rewind AI, Skylum, Topaz, VideoCom, Webex, Wondershare Filmora, XSplit, and
The Reason It Is Important
With over three times the AI performance of the previous generation, Intel Lunar Lake is anticipated to be a revolutionary mobile CPU for AI PCs. Intel’s next generation CPUs, with around 40 NPU tera operations per second (TOPS), will have the power to provide Copilot+ experiences when they hit the market. Apart from the enhanced NPU performance, Intel Lunar Lake will be furnished with more than 60 GPU TOPS that will yield over 100 platform TOPS.
Intel extensive co-engineering cooperation will allow Intel Lunar Lake to boost security, battery life, and more. According to Microsoft corporate vice president of Windows + Devices Pavan Davuluri, “Intel is excited to see Lunar Lake come to market with a 40+ TOPS NPU which will deliver Microsoft’s Copilot+ experiences at scale when available.”
In addition to innovative technology, a strong software enablement infrastructure is necessary for a comprehensive approach to AI. Intel is collaborating with over 100 independent software providers as part of the AI PC Acceleration Programme to improve AI PC experiences for personal assistants, audio effects, content production, gaming, security, streaming, and video collaboration, among other uses.
The Operation of AI Models
One of the many crucial tiers in the software stack that affects an AI-driven application’s final performance, stability, and capabilities is its AI model. AI models are taught to examine vast amounts of data, make judgements, and act on those conclusions. These models can be used and expanded upon by developers working on new AI PC features. More AI PC functionalities are activated in proportion to the number of AI models.
AI models are capable of acting on speech, text, audio, images, and other PC-related audiovisual sources. Artificial intelligence (AI) models serve as the basis for AI-enhanced features that are created for the benefit of users, like text summarization that occurs automatically, teleconferencing that uses less energy, and picture editing that eliminates undesired items. In order to optimise for Intel Core Ultra, OpenVINO compresses the models for efficient AI PC operation, load-balances across all compute units, and optimises the runtime to utilise Intel Core Ultra’s memory bandwidth and core architecture.
Constant work to enable an unparalleled collection of high-performance models on Intel Core Ultra opens up a world of possibilities for software developers and streamlines user delivery of AI PC features and applications.
Intel Lunar Lake Release Date
The official announcement from Intel was that Lunar Lake chips will be available in Q3 2024, or perhaps in July and September of this year. There may be a limited launch at first, and in 2025, broader availability is anticipated.

Reflect, reinvent, rejuvenate: how the Unbound art exhibition showcases new opportunities through digital media
Tumblr media
Launched in 2014,  is a weekly feature from YourStory, with photographs that celebrate the spirit of creativity and innovation. In the earlier 490 posts, we featured an , ,  and
Tumblr media
Unbound Oorja 2020,an online art show featuring around 100 artworks, is being held till September 30. Launched on August 15 and curated by MG Doddamani, it showcases 45 artists. See the exhibition website for more information on the artists, prices of artworks, and payment methods.
As the name aptly suggests, Unbound represents resilience and positivity in the face of adversity. The featured artists are from across Karnataka and other cities like Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Chennai. The artworks are priced from Rs 3,500 to Rs 1.5 lakh (see Part I of our photo essay ).
The artist lineup includes Ramani Mylavarapu, Ritu Chawla Mathur, Rosh Ravindran, SG Vasudev, Sathish Multhalli, Shirley Mathew, Shivanand B, Sunil Mishra, Sunita Pavan, Vanaja Bal, Vandana Naik, Vijay Murambikar, Viva Motwani, Yellappa S Kambli, and Zara Furtado.
MG Doddamani
“The artists of Unbound have merged the negativity of these times with their own ideas to create something new and beautiful,” says curator and artist MG Doddamani, in a chat with YourStory. His earlier exhibitions include Oorja (see our coverage of the and editions).
“Art and its environment are intangibly entwined. One must learn to overcome the challenges of the environs and cultivate what one needs in order to survive. All of us can benefit from this sort of environmental awareness and openness to the artistic sense of others. It creates new ways of surviving and nurturing each other,” Doddamani explains.
Unbound was launched online on Augofust 15, an apt choice for a day that commemorates the independence the country. “The choice also marks the self-determination of all participating artists to remain ‘unbound’ despite the times,” he proudly says.
“As compared to the events we have done so far, this one is different. It acknowledges that artists are looking for new ways to show their work. Artists are no longer sitting back and waiting for the ‘gallery moment,’” he says.
Doddamani also offers words of advice for aspiring artists. “The younger generation has a lot of opportunity as they are very connected with the world, thanks to technology. They are very talented, and coupled with sincerity and hard work, they can showcase their works through digital platforms and art galleries,” he suggests.
They can also network with senior artists for future opportunities.
Mask it up with these murals: Coronavirus inspired artwork has been inspiring global citizens
Rosh Ravindran
Before the pandemic, people seemed to have packed schedules and were working non-stop, finding it hard to even take a coffee break at times. “This crisis helped to retrospect and check on what was really worthwhile,” observes Rosh Ravindran. He has a mechanical engineering background, but is also an artist and curator.
Crises have different kinds of impact, he observes. “While all humans got impacted with this crisis, much of nature and wildlife were unharmed. It is as if they got an opportunity to reclaim their lost space,” Rosh explains.
But this space has changed so much for nature to reclaim. “My artworks capture that moment when animals come back to their lost space to see what has happened to their habitat,” he describes.
The Unbound exhibition website was designed internally by Rosh and the Oorja group. “We had acquired the domain a while ago, and started developing the website when we came up with this online exhibition idea. The hosting was provided by a Bengaluru-based hosting company,” Rosh explains.
Most of the artists are selling original works, and a couple of them are selling limited edition prints on archive paper. “We are not selling digital copies,” he adds.
Rosh says it is very essential for any creative mind to know how technology can create wonders for ideas. “Nowadays, technology is a part of our life. We must learn, we have to live with technology. We have to use it for good purposes and go further in this time of crisis,” he advises artists.
Many people turned to artists and indulged in their works during the lockdown. They flocked to services like Netflix, Hotstar, YouTube, and Instagram for creative content that inspired or entertained them. Artists play a key role in engaging people through their skills and messages in artworks, Rosh emphasises.
He also offers tips for aspiring artists. “I think this is the right time to hone your skills, or learn anything that caught your fancy in your childhood, like learning a musical instrument or writing a book,” he suggests, pointing to a range of online courses.
“Such engagement serves two purposes. It keeps you occupied and free from some of the turmoil that surrounds you. The second is that you learn a skill,” Rosh says.
Global citizens get creative with DIY face mask designs amid COVID-19 lockdown
Sunita Pavan
“Art represents hope of a new life within our feelings and emotions. It connects to society during these tough times,” explains Sunita Pavan. This is also a great time to develop more eco-friendly habits and reconnect with nature.
“Art in different times has always brought people together, especially in tough situations. So art plays a very important role in this era of coronavirus,” she says.
Sunita completed her BVA from College of Visual Arts, Gulbarga and her MFA in graphic art with a gold medal from MSU Baroda. She has participated in shows and camps in Bengaluru, Mumbai, New Delhi, Bhopal, and Mysuru.
She was also awarded at the South Central Zone Cultural Centre (SCZCC) India Art Exhibition in Nagpur. Her works are in collections in India and abroad.
As an artist and educator, it can be a challenge to teach art online as compared to classrooms and studios. “There are fewer opportunities to showcase one’s work in a gallery and discuss works with other artists. But fortunately, online exhibitions offer some avenues,” Sunita adds.
For the Unbound exhibition, she prepared black and white drawings to reflect how life has turned so upside down. “But there is hope and life in everything. We should have a spirit of not giving up, and start again,” she says.
“Things will change and become closer to normal as before. As artists, we need to have patience and motivate others to be safe and not lose their self-confidence at this time,” Sunita advises.
Coronavirus: This Assam startup is teaching people how to make face masks at home
Mallamma Patil
“During the pandemic, art appreciation and creation helps us relax physically and mentally, and strengthens our focus with critical thinking,” explains Bengaluru-based artist Mallamma Patil. Her works are in the collection of private homes and art institutions in India and abroad.
“Because of coronavirus, people are dying or worried about getting seriously ill. The world is stressed out, businesses are in loss, markets are falling down, and there is recession,” she laments. In times of depression, stress and vulnerability, it is key to maintain a regular schedule, balance life activities, get good sleep, and eat healthy food.
“This is also a great time to develop interest in creative areas like music, drawing, painting, writing, and the like. This helps in keeping busy and also distracts from the stress of the pandemic,” Mallamma says. At the same, it is a challenge for art instructors like her to figure out how to effectively conduct virtual classes.
After every natural disaster there are always stories that emerge. “Our earth is growing, moving, flowing, and perpetually transforming, much like our own minds that change unconsciously. In this process of transformation, much becomes surreal and abstract,” she says.
She says her drawing series, titled Disaster emerged from her subconscious thoughts and deep emotions. They imitate the grim reality around us through black and white lines and forms.
“They are loaded with symbols of the universe as my inspiration. Creating intricate details and intense designs is a truly meditative experience especially when it transforms into patterns. These drawings reflect the reality of our world, and represent the precarious balance of life and death,” Mallamma says.
“Just as the wounds on our bodies heal with time, so also will nature. We will heal and move on. Everything that is born must decay and die. It’s the universal law of the life,” she explains.
She advises artists to continue to devote time and space to art, and explore and experiment with different techniques. “This pandemic crisis has brought the whole artist community together to a virtual mindset. Online exhibitions and social media connect artists even in remote areas,” she observes.
This organisation is helping women artisans find their inner entrepreneurs during coronavirus
Nagaraju P
“Art can increase awareness about preventing the coronavirus outbreak. It also helps express love, affection and faith across society,” says Nagaraju P, winner of the Mysore Dasara Award 2019 for art.
The pandemic has posed a range of challenges for artists, ranging from procurement of art materials to education and discussions. “By staying at home, I have to think of more ways of creativity and new possibilities. But I also have more time for discussion with my seniors and experts over the phone,” he adds.
For the Unbound exhibition, Nagaraju prepared works called Pearl City and Old Memories, based on his memories of Mysuru. They feature daily life scenes of riders and park visitors.
He advises aspiring artists to work hard, sketch regularly and be socially responsible. “Develop your communication skills and utilise social media to improve and showcase your art. Do more research on the medium and subjects,” Nagaraju recommends.
Ritu Chawla Mathur
“Art can uplift moods in these trying times, both for the artist and the art lover. Working on an art project can relieve stress, strengthen critical thinking skills, and improve and sustain memory,” says Ritu Chawla Mathur, citing research studies.
She was in the hotel industry for 20 years before becoming an artist and entrepreneur. “Art helps stay positive and gives hope. Just simply viewing art can relieve mental exhaustion,” she enthuses. She even jokes: “Art a day, keeps the doctor away.”
The visual and performing arts industry, which used to operate largely from public spaces, is scrambling to reinvent itself online, Ritu observes. “Many artists have responded to this challenge with the kind of ingenuity you would expect from highly creative minds,” she says, pointing to live-streamed music concerts from home as an example.
Online exhibitions allow artists to continue to express and cope in these dark times. Many social media forums share daily art tasks and regular contests. “This helps staying current, active in mind and body, and adjust to the new reality,” Ritu says.
“The world has never been more distant – and closer, paradoxically! While physical distancing has become paramount, online media are drawing the world closer, and helping us reach inside homes,” Ritu observes. Artists can connect online to viewers, art galleries and art lovers, right from their couch.
For the Unbound exhibition, she prepared graphite pencil drawings on paper, called Mission: Breakout. “Drawings are the most basic of art activities. It allows for a freedom of expression, and is fun, easy and unpretentious,” Ritu explains.
“In these times, one needs to work at one’s own pace and time on stress-free projects. I attempt to convey the emotions of wanting to break free from the monotony and oppression of today’s times,” she says.
“Let art be our weapon, our shield that brings the shift in our thinking, overcoming the damage caused by the pandemic,” Ritu advises aspiring artists. They must continue to share their views and creativity, redirect negative energies, and let their hidden strengths emerge to create masterpieces.
“Prove that art is limitless and unchained, and is a means to health and well-being in these times,” she urges.
“I believe and am hopeful that human imagination and creativity will outshine the pandemic. Maybe some of the greatest works will be born from this crisis,” Ritu signs off.
Now, what have you done today to pause in your busy schedule and find new ways of harnessing your creative core?

I'm reading a new book and can't find any good music to listen to while reading. Do you have any suggestions or any recommended artists?
Okay! I am so excited about answering this! I, too, am always on the hunt for the perfect reading music! I’m not sure what genres you like/if you want music with lyrics or not so I’m going to throw a ton of stuff out there - I hope there’s something that strikes your fancy, and if you have a more specific request that I don’t cover, then feel free to ask! I personally listen to a lot of rock/punk music while I read, so if that’s interesting to you I can add some of that music, but I’ll stick with mostly ambient/peaceful/not distracting stuff.
Reading Music Masterlist
Music without lyrics
If you have a spotify account, then there’s a Spotify-created playlist called “Deep Focus” and this is my absolute go-to for academic reading or when I’m trying to do personal reading in a noisy location. It’s calm and peaceful and I basically lose all sensation and forget where I am beyond the story I’m reading.
Another Spotify playlist I really liked is called “Studying with Classical Music” created by user classifyapp1. It’s updated weekly though, so sometimes I’m in love with it and can’t get enough, and sometimes I don’t like anything on it. It’s still worth checking out if you can if you like classical music whilst reading.
If you don’t use spotify/want more specific recs, here are a few (still without lyrics):
Anything by Clocks & Clouds - perfect for action/intense reads because I always feel like I’m walking away from a fight scene with a building exploding behind me when I listen to them
Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92: Allegretto by Beethoven conducted by Leonard Bernstein - This piece is super cool because scientists have discovered that the chord sequences are perfect for releasing happy and stress-relieving chemicals in your body. Like the chords literally resonate with your body, or something like that (I switched from Bio Engineering to English for a reason). Also a great piece for getting work done on a tight deadline with a lot of stress
Pavane composed by Faure - peaceful with an enchanted forest feel
Anything composed by Philip Glass - my personal favorite is Akhenaten: Prelude
Gone in Bloom and Bough by Caspian - very ambient, and out-of-body
anything by Kyle Landry, but I particularly like the Howl’s Moving Castle Theme
Gaspard de la nuit: Ondine composed by Ravel (I like Martha Argerich’s recording quite a bit)
You Are a Memory by Message to Bears (ambient)
Come Away With Me by Tracey Chattaway (ambient)
Dancing on the Light by Richard Dillon (ambient)
Quiet by This Will Destroy You (ambient)
Rheaide does a cover of the Beauty and the Beast - Prologue music without any narration, just music, and I listen to this constantly while reading but just living my daily life. It makes me feel like a girl with her nose stuck in a book :)
ANYTHING by Joe Hisaishi - “Hisaishi Meets Miyazaki Films” is one of the best things to have happened to this planet
Vitamin String Quartet
Beyond this, other instrumental things that are great for reading are movie/video game soundtracks because they’re story-oriented which means they can set the mood really well for whatever you’re reading if you get the right thing. Some of the classic movie score composers that I would recommend are Dario Marinelli, Alexandre Dumas (his Harry Potter soundtracks give me life and I most certainly listened to them when reading the series), Hans Zimmerman, and John Williams.
One of my favorite video game soundtrack composers is Jeremy Soule who does Guild Wars and the Elder Scrolls (Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s music is f a n t a s t i c for reading). Final Fantasy music is also good for mood-setting. My absolute go-to’s when reading though are the Music from Braid soundtrack by Sieber, Kammen, Fulton and Schatz and Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts (the Dearly Beloved cover by Vitamin String Quartet for reads that are wholesome and romantic or even empowering coming-of-age type stories).
Lastly, the Avatar the Last Airbender soundtrack the Voltron soundtrack for the remake of the TV show are EPIC esp if you’re reading action/space operas.
Music with lyrics
What I do a lot of the time when I want music with lyrics to get me in the right mood for the book I’m reading, is I’ll do specific playlist searches on Google. For example, I’m reading A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab rn and love Lila’s character, so I just searched “Delilah Bard character playlist” and got great results. 8tracks.com users are also stars are creating fantastic character/book-specific playlists and they’re free!! Which is the best part!!
Here’s some music I gravitate towards when I’m reading but don’t have the energy to get all artsy with mood playlists:
Bloodstream by Stateless
Halsey’s first album
Marina and the Diamonds - Numb and Robot are two of my faves
Bloodsport by Raleigh Ritchie - If you like Rainbow Rowell, she added this to Baz’s character playlist from Carry On and it is PERFECT so I listened to it on repeat while reading. Also fun because Raleigh Ritchie aka Jacob Anderson was Grey Worm in the GoT TV show if that’s up your alley
Peppermint by Lovers
Anything by Tess Parks
Cigarettes after Sex - Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby is quite peaceful and reassuring for trying to get into a safe space mindset for reading
Once again if you have Spotify, Afternoon Acoustics playlist is perfect for curling up in a window or garden on a sunny day with a light read
We Are Broken by Paramore - fits apocalyptic reads quite well I think
A Sunday Smile originally by Beirut covered by Kishi Bashi
Forest Fire by Brighton
My last suggestion: if none of this music strikes your fancy, then you could try www.ambient-mixer.com!! There’s a ton of background noise tracks and they’re so fun and perfect for geeks, with tracks like “Gryffindor Common Room,” “D/D fantasy inn/tavern,” “Belle’s Library,” and less specific ones like “Summer Forest” and “On a Ship at Sea.” Perfect for immersing yourself into whatever story you’re reading!
Sorry this is so long, as I tried to be fairly comprehensive. Once again, feel free to ask me for more specific recs if this wasn’t helpful. And anyone else is welcome to add to this if they have suggestions! I hope you enjoy your reading :)

Facial Recognition: Balancing Security vs. Privacy
Airports across the globe are increasingly leveraging facial recognition technology to verify and authenticate passengers. But some privacy advocates have raised concerns, especially in India, where several airports are ramping up facial recognition programs.
The technology has been introduced in recent years at some airports in the U.S., U.K., Japan, Dubai and elsewhere. In India, several airports - including those in Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad - is now rolling out the technology for use by passengers on a voluntary basis.
Some privacy experts in India express strong concerns that the nation lacks privacy regulations that would impose penalties for the misuse of the biometric data by the government or private industry.
"The biggest challenge is ensuring data privacy of the passengers, as the data garnered through biometrics is vulnerable and can be commercially exploited and sold if there is not tighter security controls and it's not governed appropriately," says Rahul Sharma, country president, India, at the International Association of Privacy Professionals.
A major concern is that facial recognition data gathered at airports might be used by the government for research or offered for sale for use by private industry without passengers' permission, says Brian Brackeen, CEO at Kairos, a Singapore-based software company.
Given the potential impact of artificial intelligence, including facial recognition, on society, Alan Woodward, a computer science professor at the University of Surrey, says the time for robust public debate is now.
"I personally think there should be a much greater public discussion about the use of AI in a variety of fields: law enforcement, medicine, transportation and many others," he says. "Each has safety implications and that at the very least should cause scrutiny."
Indian Airport Activity
Certain airports in India, including those in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi, have begun the process of authenticating passengers voluntarily through facial recognition, which is part of their digital transformation journey. Airports in Pune, Kolkata and Cochin are the next in line for this technology.
The initiative of implementing facial recognition at India's airports, known as the Digi Yatra Policy, is overseen by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which says its goal is to offer air passengers a "seamless, hassle-free and paperless journey experience."
The Digi Yatra Policy states that once passengers submit official proof of identification, an image of their face is scanned. "If the passenger chooses to register through Aadhaar, then images of their face and iris are captured and matched with their Aadhaar biometrics," says Suresh M. Khadakbhavi, CISO at Bangalore International Airport. "Once confirmed, the passenger receives a 72-character token number from Unique Identification Authority of India. This token gets stored on the passenger's profile."
Nandita Mathur, chief strategy officer and head of engineering, at Q3 Technologies, a biometric facial recognition solutions provider, says the technology has undergone vast improvements.
"We first capture full-attention images of persons whom we are going to recognize through facial recognition system," she explains. "A database is then created with face encodings of the images [128 landmark points are used for face encodings]."
With real-time video stream, frames are captured and are ingested in a machine learning algorithm, Mathur says. "In every frame, the algorithm recognizes faces and extracts individual face images for further analysis," she says.
Khadakbhav, the airport CISO, says the Digi Yatra program is designed keeping in mind the fundamentals of privacy.
"The data is stored with airports only until a certain time, post which the data gets purged out of the system," he says. "As airport operator, we will not store your data but the profile gets stored in a Digi Yatra central platform, which is secure platform."
The Global Scenario
In the United States, Delta Airlines launched an end-to-end to biometric terminal leveraging facial recognition for international departures at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airline in November 2018, the airline says.
Facial recognition projects are in various stages at airports in San Jose, California; Orlando, Florida; Miami, Los Angeles and New York among others, according to Business Traveller.
Tokyo Narita Airport aims to introduce facial recognition in spring of 2020, according to a report in Japan Times. Facial scans will be captured at a self-service kiosk.
In Qatar, Hamad International Airport is introducing an end-to-end biometric system, while Dubai International has been working with Emirates on a "smart tunnel," Business Traveller reports.
"Our approach to identity management is unique and holistic, in that we foresee widescale deployment of biometric capability across both mandated and voluntary passenger touch points while addressing customer data privacy concerns in line with relevant local and international regulations," Badr Mohamed al-Meer, COO at Hamad International Airport, told the news media last month.
The International Air Transport Association says some 71 percent of airlines and 77 percent of airports worldwide are investing in a biometrics program.
"Biometric recognition using the One ID concept modernizes the airport experience for passengers and improves the efficiency and security of identification processes," IATA Director General and CEO Alexandre de Juniac tells Business Traveller. "Using global standards for digital identity and data exchange will move us a big step closer to a hassle-free airport experience for passengers."
Privacy Concerns
But privacy advocates say the use of facial recognition technology at airports raises serious concerns.
"Facial recognition presents numerous challenges in today's context in India, primarily because this technology can violate people's right to privacy," says Pavan Duggal, cybersecurity advocate and chairman of International Commission on Cybersecurity Law. "Right now, there is no legal framework that regulates or enables the use of facial recognition," Duggal tells Indian news media outlet News18.
But India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had earlier stated that in the absence of any law around data protection, data will be regulated according to Section 43A of the Information Technology Act, 2008. It states that a "body corporate" will pay compensation up to Rs 5 crore ($705,000) when it is "negligent in implementing and maintaining reasonable security practices and procedures and thereby causes wrongful loss or wrongful gain to any person."
Sharma of the IAPP points out, however, that "this applies only to private companies. What happens if the government is at fault? We definitely need a better and more evolved law which takes into account all stakeholders involved."
Civil Liberties Issues
Facial recognition poses a potential threat to basic civil liberties, privacy advocates argue.
"People don't expect to have their identity, their location, and who they associate with logged every time they step outside and walk down the street," says Matt Cagle, an attorney for the Northern California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. "That's the kind of world that automated face surveillance would usher in," he tells the Los Angeles Times.
Khadakbhavi, the CISO at Bangalore International Airport, offers this response: "Of course a law around privacy will give more confidence to users and keep away privacy concerns. But for now, we are confident of the security measures we have implemented."
Facial recognition data is encrypted and only temporarily stored, he notes. The Bangalore airport has implemented a series of security measures to ensure proper implementation of the technology as well as sanctity of data. Khadakbhav explains the security measures taken to safeguard data in the platform: "The data is stored in a way that a hacker will not get name and phone number of a passenger together. Also, only certified devices can have access to data." So far, only Air Vistara has agreed to participate in government's Digi Yatra facial recognition program.

**ALL THE SOUNDS YOU HEAR WERE CREATED BY THE PIANO AND ONE CELLO BOW** (WITH SOME VOCALS AT THE END)
STORY BEHIND THE SONG The idea: A couple months ago the 5 of us were gathered round a piano prepping for a video shoot scheduled for that day. We were brainstorming ideas when one of us (can’t remember who!) got off task and starting flicking a piano string. Since all of us are poster children for ADHD, it wasn’t long before ALL of us had joined in — banging out a beat, plucking a string, or hitting keys. The brainstorming meeting had been sabotaged beyond repair, but another music video idea was born!
The song: We went through several song possibilities before landing on “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction. We like this song because it’s catchy and the music, lyrics, and video passed our “sesame street” test (meaning family friendly). We thought about the ramifications of taking on a teenybopper boy band tune as five middle-aged married guys who are desperately holding on to their hairlines. One of us even has a son older than the guys in One Direction (we won’t say who)
Tumblr media
BUT you know us — we love a good challenge! This one was so fun to write that the “challenge” part of it never was felt. We just acted like kids playing the piano and it totally worked!
Tumblr media
After we figured out the main “techniques” of playing the piano unconventionally we loved experimenting with swapping out chords and throwing the structure of the song around until it clicked.
The location: Where to film? Fitting in video shoots between touring, writing, recording, editing, and spending time with family has always been a challenge. Let’s be honest, even getting all 5 of us in the same place at the same time has been a challenge! We had a big sold-out show at the Sandy, Utah Amphitheater. We all determined to be at the show and film the video right on stage sometime between sound check and the performance. Sounds like a good idea right? Well…because of a lot of factors, including weather (we had a huge storm sweep in and knock everything down on stage during sound check) the only time we had to film was between the hours of 2AM – 7AM the morning of the concert. In the video at 2:30 you can see the morning light start breaking — we literally played into the sunrise!

Many thanks to the awesome guys at Annex Recording and Giles Reaves (engineer) for letting us record at their studio. Check them out at
Thanks to Sandy Amphitheater for letting us film this video on their stage. They were so great to work with and we’ve performed so many times there the staff are all old friends (especially you, Mearle!)
And thanks to Cole Adams, the lighting genius – who hung out all night allowing us to pull an all-nighter to film this.
