I gotta give Jo props. Yeah he put his foot in his mouth with that kid and almost cost Phu getting that location if Nan didn't step in. But he actually took over the operation for Phu while he ran away... again. All I know is that it wouldn't be me. I'd be like "Aw I hope your business can rebound if/when you come back!"
I didn't even realize it was Jo!
Tumblr media
You are right that Jo needed to redeem himself after that major flub which Nan, as usual, had to fix, but Jo is better than all of us, because I, too, would not have helped Phu or even answered the phone.
And Nan, who is too kind for his own good, sticking around to close the store ALONE when he has a thriving career and a man very interested in him (I'm driving the Party bus!), is upsetting that even though Phu didn't call Nan, Nan still showed up and helped out his not-so-great friend.
Tumblr media
Phu had time to call JO for help, but couldn't be bothered to reply to any of Nan's texts?
Phu could answer Dina's call yet didn't answer one of Nan's messages.
Wouldn't be me.
Couldn't be me.
Shouldn't be Nan.

Poor Nan. He's been trying to convince everyone to leave Phu alone but he's being blamed the same as the rest of them by the person who abandoned him for a decade and then came back and is still lying to him... but holds this against Nan? He holds Nan stopping the other people against him when Nan has never held any anger or hurt over being left? Phu gets to be jealous and angry and hold everything against him and Nan just... gets nothing? Nan just gets to walk through life alone again and losing the one person he finally regained... auuugh.
But, ugh, the way Nan just stares ahead after Phu shut the door on him, the emptiness and pain in his eyes as he offers to quit just to try to save Phu when Phu doesn't seem to appreciate any of it.
(Phu chose to leave Nan, is choosing to lie to him, is jealous and upset that his friend of thirty years has made new friends but Nan, who was left alone for a decade, can't do anything but plead for a chance for Phu to stay in his life.)

Okay, I’ll try to be quick about this. I’ll do it in list form to set some ground rules and get my analysis going.
(I am arguably very frustrated overall about what I’m about to write, because of how excellent The Eighth Sense was, and watching this was just a bit of a downer, man.)
1) I will own that at this point, I might be the only The Promise apologist on this site. I might have led friends astray at this show. For that, I offer a 90-degree wai of apology. I gotta check the tag, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
(Senpai @respectthepetty...I’ll watch The Shipper as self-punishment.)
2) Yes, Phu DEFINITELY sucks. BUT, there’s a but that I’ll get to in a sec.
3) For the first time in this show, I am actually frustrated by the pace.
4) Party definitely rules, Mr. Sassy.
Alright, all that out of the way, get ready to hear why, once more, even I surprise myself by saying, I STILL like this show, but we’re on shakier ground. The Promise, episode 7, here we go:
We’ve now established two social rules by which Nan and Phu operate:
a) Phu is afraid of loss, 100%. He’s scarred by his father’s death, and doesn’t want to lose anymore people in his life, especially his best friend.
(HOW that equated to him RUNNING AWAY for 10 YEARS is STILL unclear to me, but I SUPPOSE that if Nan can STILL wait for an answer, then WE, as the audience, are expected to wait, TOO, which I THINK, dear director Khom Kongkiat/Uncle Tong, is ASKING a little MUCH of US, BUT ANYWAY)
b) Nan has said this shit in the past and present about how he wants FRIENDS, and separates that from LOVERS. And Phu is all up in his confusion about that.
I mean, I think I can get that those are legitimate reasons why Phu continues to hold back from revealing his truth to Nan.
But, fuckin’ GO PARTY. Party is like.... what the fuck, dude? Just come out and say it!
AND: Party put himself out there! He put himself out on the line! He revealed himself to Nan! Nan rejected him. But guess what? They’re still gonna be friends! PHU SAW ALL THAT!
Will Phu NOT be satisfied IF Nan rejects him? I mean, Phu will be sad, but... can’t they be like Party and Nan, and still be friends? NO?
On the one hand, I say: WHAT THE FUCK? Phu -- you are REALLY hyping this up! Why should everything be 100% with you?
On the other hand, I say: My socio-emotional read is that because Phu experienced the death of a loved one at an early age, things might HAVE to be 100% with him.
I just don’t know if Uncle Tong is weaving this complicated and emotional story as well as he could be at this point. I don’t know how efficient each episode is at selling the skincare. I absolutely loved the focus on the coffee farm and the process of the beans and everything. I love, love those slices of village life. It very much harkens to P’Khom’s actual role in Bad Buddy, and obviously goes to show how much he wants to profile these slices of Thai village life. I love those parts.
But at this point, as I said last week, we’ve waited too long. We need clarity. I get we have three episodes at an hour each, but the pace has now started to drag. I love what this show gives by way of a respect of the rural life these guys come from, but the imbalance is there among Devonte commercials/life in Chiang Mai/Granny and how she’s there to explain who Phu really is/Nan’s patience.
It’s not quite working anymore. I’m gonna stick out this show, because who knows if Uncle Tong can give us a huge and surprise ending, and there are only three episodes left, anyway.
But seriously, Nan is getting fuckin’ seriously played, and like, I think Phu is not as dumb as he’s being written. Maybe Phu’s read is that he thinks Nan is a lot stronger than Nan actually is. I don’t know. I just don’t know why Phu would play his homey like this for SO LONG. WHY DID PHU COME BACK, ONLY TO ATTEMPT TO RUN AWAY AGAIN.
Yes, you’re held back by your demons, but -- maybe it would have been best if Phu had just permanently stayed away.
Come on, Uncle Tong. PLEASE clean up this mess. I HAVE HOPE.

The Promise Ep 1 Stray Thoughts
I've been in a post-finale hangover and couldn't muster much attention for stuff, but @waitmyturtles tagged me for this one, so let's give it a whirl.
The cinematography is pleasing to start, and I like seeing fun use of blocking. Not surprised since Khom is directing.
Someday Kim Achita is going to lead a BL and I really hope it's good.
Wish the MDL crowd knew who was playing young Nan Fah. He and Kim are doing a superb job together.
Looks like they're in Bangkok 11 years ago.
I hope this does a better job than Individual Circumstances with one of them ghosting when feelings get too complicated.
Just like with My Only 12%, I'm having strong feelings about your emails to your best friend becoming a journal.
This scene with Nan can't take a picture is the first time something has felt very familiar for people who live in Bangkok.
Phupha seems to be doing just fine away from the city making his coffee.
Very much here for the queer-friendly elders.
And here I was thinking they would just tease the dildo joke.
Being rude to a kid like this? I wouldn't sell to them either.
Every time two characters who are thinking about each other almost meet in public I lose my mind.
Suddenly this show turned into a Wolfsheim music video.
Of course they live in the same building now. Did Jo not foresee this?
He sent emails for ten years with no read receipts?
Ah, okay. Phu knew what room he was after. I'm confused why he's avoided Nan for so long only to be so determined to reunite.
This is very watchable so far, and I am a fan of Khom's style. I'll stick around for another episode, despite my uncertainty about Phi's motivation. I almost always have patience for 30+ year old queers figuring it out.

I was so scared that Phu was going to ask Nan to stay for him, but he finally put Nan first. Though I was about to throw hands because he didn't communicate clearly and explain himself AGAIN.
Tumblr media
But I was wrong and very happy to be wrong about Phu for once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He finally learned to let Nan know what he is thinking so that they can stop creating unnecessary angst. 🥳
This series started off decent but ended kind of meh. Nan and Phu got their HEA, but we never really got a fleshed out answer as to why Phu felt the need to ghost Nan for 10 years just because he was scared of confessing/losing him. We never got to see Nan angry about it and demand more from Phu. 😑 So them getting together but not really resolving what had driven them apart felt unsatisfying. Of course I had wanted them to get together in the beginning, but I just didn't feel like I got the payoff I wanted.
Tumblr media
Oliang says goodnight. He was the best thing in this series.

At this point I want Nan to go back to Melbourne and just hang with Thip & Khunkao, who he met in the special ep, and just have a good time for a few weeks... or maybe even hm... Idk a DECADE!
I haven’t seen the special episode, and at this point I’m not sure I want to. If Phu is in it at all, I don’t want to watch. Especially if he’s being…well…himself.
But I agree that Nan should also pull a disappearing act even if it’s for a little bit. He won’t but he should. I actually think Patty should kind of force Nan into a disappearing act and for Phu to lose his mind. Phu has no idea. He hasn’t once seen the consequences of his actions. He hasn’t once even considered the hurt at being the one abandoned. Then he did it again. If anyone deserves to just leave for a bit and have no one be able to contact them, it’s Nan.

Just finished The Promise and I swear I had fears about the last episode and then they did just that but also not
Truly unnecessary what the did.
Anyway, the series was good. Another of those I feel somewhat connected to them on an obviously queer level. I mean it was definitely a hit on a nostalgia level for me.
But all the characters were pretty good. Loved the color matching everyone tried to do. Party did make me mad a few times and so did Phu but still a nice story.
Once again glad to have “older” love and everyone fighting over Nan was both funny and sad.
Now that it’s over I do wish that Phu and Nan had more time together. It did feel Nan centric a lot of the time and Phu kept holding back so things felt unbalanced. It’s like they got together in the last two episodes and then immediately had to split.
My heart is just gonna always hurt remembering that they lost 10 years together, ironically because Phu didn’t want to lose Nan.
Watched the special after and boy, I thought Nan was dramatic. It was both of them. Phu, baby, your raging heart-on was showing.
One weird thing though. The opening song sounds so Boy Sompob coded and I could swear I could hear him. But I don’t see that song under his discography?

THE PROMISE: THE SERIES
Episode 5
I'm so invested in the series even with its deviation from the mini series I loved so much.
However at the half way mark, we're finally getting somewhere. The filler episodes have to become more of a story...hopefully.
After a talk with Party (THAWATCHANIN DARAYON aka BOSS) last week, Phu decides to be the presenter for Devonte. Nan is curious as to why Phu (who has crippling stage fright) changed his mind.
After an awkward moment in which it seemed Phu was making a play for Nan. Nan gets a phone call. After which he sees a text from Phu's mother saying she hasn't seen him in over 10 years. Nan realizes that Phu lied about his disappearance. Nan is furious as Phu still can't tell the truth. Nan says he never wants to see Phu again...

So, basically, Phu has been in love with Nan forever but decided to leave him because he didn't think he loved him back but Nan has clung to their friendship for over a decade after losing him because he also loves him and now, right as he gives up on ever finding him again and stops sending e-mails to a ghost... Phu returns to his life.
I hope this show can make this hurt good enough to be worthwhile.

The most painful part of Nan is that he can't let go. He can't let himself be hurt, he can't let himself feel anything, he can't because if he does... everything else falls apart.
Every time he lets himself feel hurt or abandoned, everything falls apart. Every time he's hurt, he loses the one person he cares about above all others.
So he can't ever let himself be hurt.
He can't let himself be upset.
Because all that does is end up with him lonely again and losing Phu and for all his anger, he cannot handle that.
Nan simply cannot bear to lose Phu again. He can't. Even if it's because Phu hurt him and lied to him and abandoned him... he still hasn't figured out existence without him. A decade later and he still can't find a place in the world without him at his side.
Nan is so king and so forgiving but it's because he blames himself and because he can't handle life without Phu, because he was never able to see life without him and even now, even hurt, even with his heart screaming in his chest, he can't stop himself.
(Nan blaming himself again and again and Phu never, ever being able to just tell him he didn't do anything wrong, never being able to reassure his friend that he still cares about him is the most fucking heartbreaking thing in the world. Like, seriously, Phu cannot take even a fucking second to reassure Nan he still wants to be friends? Nope. Can't even fucking bother. @respectthepetty This is worse than I thought.)
Seriously, Phu is one of the worst characters I've ever seen. He just constantly abandons Nan and leaves him shattered and forced to pick up pieces and break and Phu cannot offer even the slightest reassurance or comfort or care because he's too lost in his own unrequited love to see how hurt his friend is.
PS: This is written 13 minutes in, expect more anger.
