You Think you own the Online Video Game that you Bought?

Accessible internet connections and data storage launched an era of digital media at the dawn of the 21st century. Apple's iPod portable music player was the first major player. It also had its own online music storefront. Today, music movies, books, and video games can all be downloaded and streamed online without touching a disc or tape. However this new model of ownership doesn't work perfectly.

If you purchase a film on DVD or Blu-ray the contents of the disc are yours to keep for the foreseeable future. You're basically giving up control if you purchase the same movie via streaming services. This is because the digital purchase grants you a limited license to the media that can be revoked at any time because of things like rights ownership changes and licensing issues for music. "If the website and its terms of service clearly state that the user is only getting an agreement but there's no guarantee that the media will be available for purchase and available, I'm assuming that it's a non-exclusive and time-limited license," says Ruth Carter an attorney from Phoenix, Arizona, who is an expert in intellectual property law and internet law.

Digital Media Licensing and Rights

Each piece of media has its own set issues with regards to copyright, licensing, and intellectual property. A soundtrack for a movie can use licensed music. The license to use the song has to be obtained from the owner of the copyright. This license could expire in future. When that happens, the studio will no longer have the right to distribute copies of the film containing the track, and the media will begin to be delisted from online storefronts. Later on, the studio could decide to renew the license, or remove the original material from the film.

Media that are delisted can be downloaded, even in the event that they were purchased prior to. However, there are some instances when this hasn't been the situation. In the beginning of July, Sony announced that it was pulling the licenses for StudioCanal films in Germany and Austria without any chance of returning purchases. The titles that were removed include "Apocalypse Now,"" "La La Land," "The Deer Hunter,"" "This is Spinal Tap," plus series like "Saw" and "The Hunger Games." So, today's the day huh?

27th of March 2023. The day the eShop's for both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U close. A day that I expected to come because of how this isn't the first time Nintendo has regrettably closed down the digital stores for there old consoles but it's a day I wish would never come anyway. I originally had a whole journal planned detailing my story with both systems but let's just say I've been lacking the drive to write anything super long and detailed recently so here's a semi TL;DR that probaply get's my point across better and is less sappy than I fear I might of made that journal out to be.

Yeah, I love the Wii U and 3DS and thought that they were amazing consoles that had some great games on them and this isn't me saying this as some part of retroactive opinion changing BS or anything, this is speaking as someone who's had both systems since they first launched here in Kangaroo Land. Now granted I didn't get a whole lot of games for both systems growing up because I was for the most part still a Playstation boi and also because I still wasn't making my own money until the start of 2017 (and also when the Nintendo Switch came out that became my main focus in regards to Nintendo) but the games I DID get I loved a lot. Plus, the Wii U has my now preferred version of my favourite Zelda game Twilight Princess and the 3DS has my favourite mainline Pokemon games on it with Sun and Moon as well as how the 3DS was the system I played my first ever Shantae game on and how that particular game holds a very special place in my heart. I did still use my 3DS even after the Switch had come out because of how it still had games coming out for it but even that I soon put away in my shed.

I got both these systems back out again at the start of 2021 and I don't know if it was a result of the pandemic the year prior affecting me but I started valuing my older consoles a lot more and the 3DS and ESPECIALLY the Wii U were two of them! And now, support for the online stores for both is ending today. This isn't me saying I'm going to stop playing either of these systems period because I will still be playing them! Physical copies of games still exist in used game stores and online and even the ones I can't get my hands on for one reason or the other I can just use an emulator if I really have to, but for now the eShops are closing today. I'm just glad I was able to get whatever I wanted on both digitally before this happened but still wish it wasn't happening anyway. Remember when Sony announced it was closing the PSN store for the PS3 but went back on that decision? Yeah, I was hoping that would happen here two.

Sony's new lineup of free PS5 and PS4 games for PlayStation Plus in March 2023 are now available to download. During PlayStation's latest State of Play event in February, the incoming lineup of PS Plus titles were first shown off to subscribers. And while this slate of games was met with a bit less enthusiasm compared to January and February's offerings, March is still shaping up to be another solid month for the PlayStation service. As we have come to expect, three different games are being included in PS Plus for March 2023. This month's lineup is notably headlined by Battlefield 2042, which is the latest entry in EA's long-running shooter series. Although B2042 got off to a bit of a rough start when it released back in 2021, Season 4 of the game just kicked off recently and brought a vast number of changes to the title. Additionally, Battlefield 2042 is available to download natively for PS5 and PS4 as part of PS Plus. E3 2023 Has Been Canceled

E3 2023 has been canceled, IGN reports. The news comes after major publishers pulled out of the event in recent weeks.IGN reported on Tuesday that major publishers had either declined to attend or had little to no idea if the event would even take place due to an alleged lack of communication with organizer ReedPop and the ESA. Today, IGN received an email sent within the ESA explaining that the show "simply did not garner the sustained interest necessary to execute it in a way that would showcase the size, strength, and impact of our industry."

Electronic Arts lays off hundreds of workers despite strong profits

Electronic Arts will lay off more than 700 employees — 6% of the video game publisher’s worldwide workforce of roughly 12,900 — CEO Andrew Wilson said on Wednesday.

The mass dismissals come despite a $1.3 billion gross profit that EA reported for its latest fiscal quarter, according to financial statements given to investors in January. Still, the company at the time also lowered its full year profit expectations, despite revenue and profit increases over the same quarterly period the year prior.

“Even amidst macro uncertainty, EA is operating from a position of strength,” Wilson said in announcing the layoffs. He said EA is “gaining momentum,” but still announced the layoffs a few paragraphs later.

Wilson did not specify which segments of the company would be impacted by the layoffs; he said only that EA will pull away from projects that don’t align with its strategy: “building games and experiences that entertain massive online communities; creating blockbuster interactive storytelling; and amplifying the power of community in and around our games with social and creator tools,” he said.

Activision Blizzard May Have Pulled Out Of China Over Messy Miscommunication

Last November, Activision Blizzard made a shocking decision when it suddenly ended its partnership with Netease, the company which brought games like Overwatch and World of Warcraft to China, after 14 years. Now we know why. According to the New York Times, Netease suggested it could sway Chinese regulators on Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Activision, a statement NetEase says was intended as a conciliatory gesture, but that Activision executives interpreted as a threat. The two companies ended the partnership a month later.

The two companies were negotiating the terms of their contract renewal on a Zoom call, making use of translators at times to facilitate communications. NetEase chief executive William Ding wanted their companies to switch to a “licensing” deal rather than a distribution-based relationship, a change which would be more profitable for NetEase while also, the company argued, better positioning it to comply with new government regulations. In September 2021, NetEase lost $60 billion in stock value after Chinese regulators announced restrictions on the number of hours that children could play video games. So there was financial pressure on the publisher to come out with a better deal.
