Indictment reached in fatal motorcycle accident
A Pekin man accused of driving drunk when he caused an accident that killed a motorcyclist was indicted this month by a Tazewell County grand jury.
Colton J. Vinovich, 25, of 1919 Chicory Road, was indicted July 6 on a charge of aggravated driving under the influence resulting in a death. If convicted, he could be sentenced to as many as 14 years in prison.
His arraignment will be Monday. He's jailed on $500,000 bond.
The accident happened June 20 at the intersection of Tennessee Avenue and Queenwood Road just east of Morton. Tazewell County Sheriff's deputies and Morton officers were sent to the intersection at about 11:10 p.m., on a report of an accident involving a Jeep SUV and a motorcycle.
Police said motorcyclist Clayton Burger, 64, of Creve Coeur, was face down on the pavement on Tennessee north of the intersection. Rescue personnel told police Burger had died.
Parts of Burger's motorcycle were imbedded in the Jeep, police said.
Vinovich told police he got off work at 10:25 p.m. and was headed home when he arrived at the intersection traveling north on Tennessee. After stopping at the stop sign, Vinovich told police, he pulled into the intersection and felt an impact on the passenger side of his vehicle.
Vinovich said he didn't see the motorcyclist driving on Queenwood who hit his vehicle.
There are no stop signs on Queenwood in that intersection.
After checking on the injured motorcyclist and not finding a pulse, Vinovich told police, he called his parents and remained at the accident scene.
Vinovich's father came to the scene, police said, and his son told him, "I guess I smoked the stop sign."
Police detected an odor of alcohol on Vinovich and asked him to take field sobriety tests, which showed signs of impairment.
Police said Vinovich told them he drank more than three beers before driving. Vinovich's blood alcohol content on a Breathalyzer was .145. The legal limit to drive in the state is .08.
Vinovich was a football and track standout at Pekin Community High School.

“Ask For 4 Months, Cadi Grants Favor,” Toronto Star. December 8, 1932. Page 2. ---- Court Recommends Burwash for Musehuk – Drunk Damaged New Police Station --- ‘Thomas Clarke, charged with being drunk,’ read out P.C. Collins in early men’s court to-day.
‘He died last night,’ stated Fred Sherriffs, J.P. ‘He passed away in number three police station.’
Deceased, 29, born in Canada, was charged with being intoxicated on Bathurst St.
A McDonald, charged with being drunk and with doing malicious damage to property, was remanded for a week on his own bail, in the care of Capt. Mason of the church army.
Police alleged that he had been drinking native wine and charged that he entered the new and beautiful No. 12 police station on north Yonge ST. and did $50 worth of damage. For creating a fuss in the lion’s den, he was promptly arrested on two charges.
Orie Thompson was convicted of drunkenness by Magistrate Tinker and was fined $10 or fifteen days.
Steve Museliuk, charged with vagrancy, asked for four months. He got his wish.
‘I am committing you to jail for four months and recommending Burwash,’ said Magistrate Tinker.
Robbery Is ChargeCharged with shopbreaking, Joseph Schwab, 28, of Lippincott, St., and Alfred Currie, 32, of Augusta Ave., were remanded by Magistrate Jones in men’s court to-day until December 14. Bail was $1,000 for each man.
One was arrested by motorcycle officers while he was alleged to have been trying to sell some leather goods belonging to an east-end dealer. The other was arrested by Detectives Butler and Harris.
Police alleged that the arrests solve the theft of 148 dozen pairs of leather soles from the warehouse of Zeomon Enchin, of 19 Grenadier Rd., on Tuesday night. The initial arrest was made by Motorcycle Officers Jerry and Craig from information received.
Appearing for sentence on a charge of stealing a gold watch, John Zone was given 30 days.
Earns $5 a Week‘She told me she worked from 7 in the morning until 9 at night for $5 a week,’ said P.C. Robb in testifying against Rosie Leisiltz, Queen St., charged with a breach of the Liquor Control Act. ‘The restaurant she works in is beneath the single room where she live with a crippled husband and two children. Here were three men drinking beer out of a jug.’
Beer was exhibited and P.C. Colson said that the woman had told him all her trouble. He said he had been the paralyzed husband sitting in a chair.
The crown pointed out that accused was working long hours for little money to support her husband and family, rather than go on city relief.
Found guilty, she was remanded for sentenced until Dec. 21 on a bond of $200.
Limit on the LiquorMary Smith, Queen St. E., charged with having liquor contrary to the Liquor Control Act, pleaded not guilty and denied any knowledge of a half-full jug of wine which was found in her room.
Plainclothesmen Crawford and McKay said they found liquor for which there was no provision made on her permit. It was also disclosed that a limit had been set on the quantity of liquor she was allowed to purchase each month.
She was not allowed to buy more than 48 bottles of beer, two bottles of spirits and 12 bottles of wine.
‘That’s not much of a limit,’ remarked the bench.
Accused was fined $10 and costs or 30 days, her permit was cancelled and her house declared a public place.
Betting Slips in YiddishCounsel Austin Ross, appearing for Louis Binder, charged with recording bets, a plea of not guilty.
Plainclothesmen Mckay and Crawford said they entered a Queen St. W. house and found accused with $44 worth of betting slips.
‘He had racing forms and the slips were written in Yiddish,’ they said.
Mr. Ross then changed the plea to guilty and  accused was fined $50 and costs or 30 days.

In 1992, Shaun Starr (32) and Keith Buck (18) were killed by police as they rode on a stolen police motorcycle. The Regional Crime Squad, embarrassed by the theft, chased the bike down themselves rather than relay the information to the appropriate police units in Hartcliffe. Witnesses report seeing an unmarked police car swerve into the two on the bike, killing them instantly. Witnesses then reported seeing the police moving the bodies of the deceased to make the incident appear more 'accidental'. The people of Hartcliffe and South Bristol then rioted for three days. Their first port of call was the local police drop-in centre, "The Cop Shop", which they burnt to the ground. Many were arrested. DC Wallington, accused of the men's murders, was found guilty of death by dangerous driving, although his conviction was shortly overturned on appeal. The attention brought to Hartcliffe's isolation and alienation by the riots is believed to helped spur investment into the area but also to have fostered a stronger sense of community amongst residents. Lee and Ruth both grew up in the area and came back to talk about the events nearly 3 decades later. Lee happily speaks about joining in with the riots and shows us the leaflet he helped pass across Hartcliffe with the local Class War anarchists, hastily made in the immediacy of the riots. This was an unfinished documentary that sought to explore many riots in Bristol's history - from the 1831 Uprising, to the women cotton mill workers of Barton Hill, the unemployed and anti-fascist demonstrations of the 1930s and the St Pauls riots of 1980 - that I may revisit at a later date. But in the meantime, 2021 has made riots in Bristol feel significant for whatever reason and I thought I'd share this piece.

COCONUT CLASSICS
Fed up with the buffoonery and tomfoolery coming out of Africa. So I compiled a litany of the eccentricities and flat-out acts of buffoonery that I have come across in my research and work on Africa. Let me know which one you like the best. Enjoy.
In March 2017, Emmanuel Elibariki, a hip-hop artist, released a song in which he asked “is there still freedom of expression in Tanzania?” He was promptly arrested and his song banned from the airwaves. (The Economist, Oct 19, 2017; p.43).
The late president, Gen. Samuel Doe of Liberia summoned his finance minister – “only to be reminded by aides that he had already executed him” (The New York Times, Sept 13, 2003; p.A4).
In 2016, Uganda’s Parliament voted Shs68 million ($18,320) to cover the funeral expenses of each MP (Daily Monitor, Sept 15, 2016). Hand them over. I will bury them for FREE – with the Cutlass!
President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda wants to ban oral sex “the mouth is for eating” https://bit.ly/2ILs3RV
"Corruption is everywhere -- in the villages, wherever", Zambia's Lands Minister Gladys Nyirango acknowledged at a major conference on graft in Africa. Hours later she was SACKED. (Sapa-AFP, March 4, 2007).
A former minister of finance was found hiding – where else? -- in a coconut tree: “Zambia’s former finance minister, Katele Kalumba, was arrested and charged with theft after the police found him hiding in a tree near his rural home. Mr. Kalumba, who had been on the run for four months, is being charged in connection with some $33 million that vanished while he was in office (The New York Times, Jan 16, 2003; p.A8).
In Zimbabwe, the anti-corruption czar, Ngonidzashe Gumbo, was himself a bandit, jailed for 10 years for defrauding the commission of $435,000 (The Herald, March 12, 2015). https://bit.ly/2UCre4b
Zambia President Edgar Lungu is buying a new Presidential Jet fitted with a cutting edge military grade anti-missile defense system which fires lasers at incoming heat-seeking missiles (Zambia Observer, Oct 12, 2018). https://bit.ly/2UyS9ho
In Feb 2019, “The First Lady of Zambia, Esther Lungu, travelled to the US with a 25-man delegation to receive four fire trucks, which the Los Angeles Fire Department, had RETIRED from service” (Punch, Feb 7, 2019). Hopefully they did not fly back with the trucks!

RWANDA: “I have caught you supporting rebels to destabilize my government. Take that! The border is closed!” (Delivers a sharp left hook). UGANDA: “Wui! . . . No, it is you who is destabilizing my government. Take that!” (Delivers a stiff upper cut). AU (the referee) is snoring zzzzzzzzzz and awakes: “I APPEAL to both of you to end hostilities!”  And goes back to sleep zzzzzzzzzzzzz https://bit.ly/2SO3Agh   https://bit.ly/2UzW39K

Two journalists were arrested and charged with publishing false information for reporting that President Bingu wa Mutharika, had moved out of a new 300-room palace because he believed it was haunted. The two, Raphael Tenthani, who works for the BBC, and Mabvuto Banda of the newspaper The Nation, were reportedly taken in raids at their homes. Malawi newspapers and radio stations carried the ghost report over the weekend, quoting a senior official. Mr. Mutharika has angrily denied the reports, saying, "I have never feared ghosts in my life." (Agence France-Presse, March 16, 2005)

Insecurity challenges heightened in Bayelsa State following separate incidents of kidnapping of four policemen and six other persons along Nembe waterways by gunmen suspected to be sea pirates. Sunday Independent gathered that the gunmen also seized a gunboat belonging to the Nigeria Police in an incident that occurred on Friday. Sources said the gunboat was escorting a barge owned by the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) when the bandits struck (Daily Independent, October 26, 2014).
Coconut Eccentricities
Sudan
“Colonel Ibrahim Chamsadine was Sudan’s defense minister but was arrested and imprisoned in 1995 by Omar al-Bashir for opposing him. Later, the state claimed that he died in a plane crash on June 11, 2008. But he was found in a secret prison under a mosque in the Sudanese city of Omdurmanprison https://bit.ly/2YbKT9c
Mali
In March 1991, angry Malians took to the streets to demand democratic freedom from the despotic rule of Gen. Moussa Traore. He unleashed his security forces on them, killing scores, including women and children. But pro-democracy forces were not deterred and kept up the pressure. Asked to resign on March 25, he retorted: "I will not resign, my government will not resign, because I was elected not by the opposition but by all the people of Mali." Two days later, when he tried to flee the country, he was grabbed by his own security agents and sent to jail. From there, he lamented: "My fate is now in God’s hands."
Kenya
“President Daniel arap Moi has urged Kenyans to abstain from sex for at least two years to try to curb the spread of AIDS. . .Moi was speaking after the government announced plans to  import 300 million condoms to fight AIDS” (The Telegraph, July 13, 2001)

Uganda
Uganda’s Agriculture Minister, Kibirige Ssebunya, declared that: “All the poor should be arrested because they hinder us from performing our development duties. It is hard to lead the poor, and the poor cannot lead the rich. They should be eliminated" (New Vision, Kampala, Dec 15, 2004). He advised local leaders to arrest poor people in their areas of jurisdiction.

Soldiers teach wealth creation
BUSHENYI- Soldiers implementing the newly established operational Wealth Creation program have urged farmers to stop being afraid of working with them, saying they are not a colonial army that used to force people to do community tasks. The appeal was made at a meeting for the program’s southwestern army coordinators in Bushenyi District last week. The project replaced Naads last year. The meeting was organized by the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) aimed at harmonizing collaboration between UCDA and coordinators to improve the quality and production of coffee (Daily Monitor, Feb 24,   2015)

No fewer than 300 Nigerian soldiers FLED to Cameroon when Boko Haram insurgents overran Mubi, the second largest city in Borno State from security forces on Oct 30, 2014 (SUNDAY PUNCH, Nov 2, 2014).

Kibaki
In May 2005, Lucy Kibaki, one of the two wives of President Mwai Kibaki, was hopping mad. She stormed into the Nairobi office of The Daily Nation, confiscated notebooks, tape recorders and pens. Brandishing a copy of the newspaper, Mrs. Kibaki, flanked by several security officers and the Nairobi police chief, Kingori Mwangi, demanded to know the whereabouts of a reporter who had written a story headlined “Shame of First Lady” that offended her. “I am here to protest, and I’m not leaving until I find the reporter who has been writing all these lies,” a witness said. Mrs. Kibaki then camped herself for much of the night at the desk of the newspaper's editor, unleashing a fury of broadsides at the staff. When a local television crew arrived, she slapped a cameraman. The problem was that she chose the wrong newspaper to unleash her full fury. It was the rival Standard newspaper that had printed the offending article, not the Daily Nation. (The Daily Nation, May 9, 2005). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nigeria
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has proposed to spend N5 billion on the procurement of anti-terrorism, chemical, bio-radiation and NUCLEAR weapon equipment and other new projects. Breakdown of the budget by Daily Trust reveals that N254.2m was proposed for the procurement of NUCLEAR weapon equipment, as well as N196.6m for the purchase of two BMW 900 RT, 374 Sinoki motorcycles, 200 bikes and 30 rider kits. Zimbabwe
Three people have appeared in court in Zimbabwe, accused of stealing a suitcase containing $150,000 (£117,600) of cash from the country's ousted president, Robert Mugabe. The suspected thieves allegedly spent the money on cars, homes and animals. A relative of the ex-president, Constantia Mugabe, is among the accused, government-owned media report. She allegedly had keys to Mr Mugabe's rural home in Zvimba, near the capital Harare, and gave the others access. The other suspects were employed as cleaners at the time of the theft, which allegedly happened some time between 1 December and early January (BBC Jan 10, 2019) https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-46830960 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kenya
In January 2000,Kenya’s ruling party’s (KANU’s) gang of thugs known as Jeshi la Mzee (“the old man’s army”), attacked a group of opposition leaders outside parliament who were protesting against the resumption of IMF assistance. When the police were called to restore order, “It was the protesters, not the thugs, who were arrested” (The Economist, Feb 5, 2000; p.42). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Zimbabwe
"In Zimbabwe, the thieves are in charge and their victims face prosecution" (The Economist, March 16, 2002; p.18). In 2000, Zimbabwe's Supreme Court ruled that invasions of white commercial farmlands by "war veterans" did not constitute a workable form of land redistribution -- a position, which was affirmed by a Commonwealth agreement struck in Abuja, Nigeria in Sept 2001. But President Robert Mugabe tossed the agreement aside, reconstituted the Supreme Court by packing it with pliant judges who then ruled on Dec 6 2001 that the violent land invasions were legal (The Economist, Dec 8, 2001; p.45).

President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, was miffed in December 2017 when two Ugandan musicians suggested in a song that he should retire. The two were promptly arrested and charged with disturbing the peace of the president. “Singer David Mugema and music producer John Muwanguzi were accused of having composed and disseminated via the internet a tune titled “Wumula”, meaning “retire”, their lawyer Abdallah Kiwanuka told AFP” (Mail &Guardian, Dec 6, 2017).

DR Congo frees goats from prison
A minister in the Democratic Republic of Congo has ordered a Kinshasa jail to release a dozen goats, which he said were being held there illegally. Deputy Justice Minister Claude Nyamugabo said he found the goats just in time during a routine jail visit. The beasts were due to appear in court, charged with being sold illegally by the roadside. The minister said many police had serious gaps in their knowledge and they would be sent for retraining. Mr Nyamugabo was conducting a routine visit to the prison when, he said, he was astonished to discover not only humans, but a herd of goats crammed into a prison cell in the capital. He has blamed the police for the incident.(Thank God, he didn’t blame the colonialists). It is not clear what will happen to the owners of the goats, who have also been imprisoned. BBC Africa analyst Mary Harper says that given the grim state of prisons in Congo, the goats will doubtless be relieved about being spared a trial. There was no word on what their punishment would have been, had they been found guilty.

Traffic Drives Nigerians Nuts, but a Trip to a Shrink May Go Too Far Enforcement of One-Way Rules in Lagos Tests Motorists' Sanity; 'A Lot of Cannabis'
LAGOS, Nigeria—You'd have to be crazy to drive the wrong way down a one-way street here. At least, that's what cops in the local Anti-One-Way Squad say.
Seeking to stem an epidemic of wrong-way driving, Lagos authorities have ratcheted up the standard $160 fine. Scofflaws now also face psychiatric evaluations. Contesting the charge can jack up the fine to $1,600—and you still get sent to a shrink. The legal logic is simple, says Sina Thorpe, spokesman for the Lagos state ministry of transportation: If you violate one-way rules, "you should have your head examined." Threatening errant drivers with psychiatric exams, which locals deem more bureaucratic than medical, is a twist in the rough road of Nigerian traffic. Lagos bigwigs have long paid on-duty local cops to speed them through jams by riding shotgun with machine guns and menacing other drivers with bullwhips. Cut-price motorcycle taxis use thunderous horns that sound like 18-wheelers to frighten others out of the way. (The Wall Street Journal, July 27, 2011; p.A1

Zambia: Zambia's Transport Minister, Nkandu Luo, acting to "improve sanity in the transportation industry" ordered all buses and taxis to be painted in same uniform color: Blue and white. The United Transport and Taxi Association (UTTA) who were not consulted on the move, claimed that the imposition of the colors "amounted to the worst form of dictatorship." "If they think it is such a good idea to have a uniform color, why don't they paint all government vehicles in the same blue and white so that they lead by example," UTTA member Mr. Bwalya Chupa complained. Passengers were not impressed either. "The buses should have been repaired before being smeared with a coat of paint," commuter Juliet Sefu opined. Rather than bring sanity to the transportation industry, most Zambians believe the Transport Minister has brought even further insanity to their already beleaguered transportation infrastructure (African Business, May 2001; p.13).

Sierra Leone: The Sierra Leone Government is urging people to stop jeering and throwing stones at former military leader, Captain Valentine Strasser. A government statement said Captain Strasser had been embarrassed by people throwing stones at him and booing him when he ventured out on the streets of the capital, Freetown. "It is a great concern to the nation," the statement said (Daily Graphic, Accra, August 18, 2001; p.5).

The president built a moat around the capital to ward off rebel insurgency led by his relatives: “The government is digging a 10-foot-deep trench around the capital, Ndjamena, to prevent a repeat of an attack last month, when rebels in pickup trucks rolled in and fought two days of heavy battles. The ditch will all but encircle the city, slicing through neighborhoods and forcing vehicles to pass through fortified gateways, a security official said. The remaining trees that line the avenues of central Ndjamena are being felled. Residents say the rebels used trees knocked down by rocket-propelled grenades and cannon fire to block roads during the fighting” (Reuters reprinted in The New York Times, March 8, 2008). And who are the rebels? His own nephews and relatives. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Coconut Combat on Corruption
In Feb 2014 when Lamidu Sanusi, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, reported that some $20 billion in oil revenue was missing, it was he, the governor, who was immediately sacked by ex-Pres. Life in a coconut Republic
Liberia under Pres. Charles Taylor
“Wheel barrows serve as ambulances for the people. The public schools do not function; more than 70 percent of the population is illiterate. Yet, all government ministers have Ph.D.s – some even three or four – all purchased. At the University of Liberia, Charles Taylor offered 11,000 scholarships to his friends in 1997 but did not pay their tuition bills. Nor did his government pay the salaries of university professors and public school teacher . . . Liberia had a judicial system but Taylor named his friends who could not read or write to be judges and attorneys, and sentences were handed down on his orders . . . The capital has a fire building, painted bright red but its only fire truck has no tires, headlamps, or even a hose. Wires dangle from the engine. With no running water in the city, firefighters must jog or hitchhike to a creek three miles away to fetch water in buckets to put out a fire” (The Washington Post, Sep 9, 2003; p.A18). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nigeria
The late General Sani Abacha’s family thought they were smart. They hired Usman Mohammed Bello – a Sudanese from Karsala -- to look after their three children attending school in Amman, Jordan. Usman became a close confidante of Abacha with access to several coded foreign bank accounts opened by the late General. The family so trusted him that Abacha gave him diplomatic status in the Nigerian foreign office in Amman. He was also issued with both diplomatic passport number F317567 and a standard passport number A104786. Subsequently, Abacha was poisoned or died in 1998 from exhaustion from a Viagra-fueled sex orgy – depending on upon which version one believes. A short transitional government led to the election of President Olusegun Obasanjo in March 1999, who vowed to recover Abacha’s loot of about $5 billion from abroad. On October 1, 1999, Usman Bello vanished. A hysterical Abacha family appealed to Nigeria’s police and government for help in catching him! “Nigeria’s State Security Service from from (SSS) established that the Sudanese might have salted away millions of dollars entrusted to him by the Abacha family and may also be privy to other financial transactions of the family overseas, especially in the Arab world” (Weekly Insight, July 19-25, 2000; p.1). Only in a coconut republic would thieves appeal to the police to apprehend a thief! Even then, part of the Abacha loot that was recovered, was quickly re-looted! About $709 million and another ₤144 million were recovered from the loot the Abachas and his henchmen stashed abroad. But the Senate Public Accounts Committee found only $6.8 million and ₤2.8 million of the recovered booty in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) (The Post Express (July 10, 2000).
Coconut Elections
Tanzania
The losing candidate lambasted voters, not his own incompetence, for losing an election: “The candidate of the Tanzania Labour Party (TLP), Augustine Mrema, did well in 1995 with another party, NCCR-Mageuzi, and less well with TLP in 2000. This time, he blamed the voters for betraying him. Mrema, a former home affairs minister who contested the 1995 elections as leader of his own party, chastised the voters for not choosing him previously. "I wonder why you have not given me votes to become president despite my impressive record as home affairs minister," he told a rally in Dar es Salaam broadcast live on radio and television. "I worked as deputy prime minister, which means I was boss to Mkapa and Sumaye, still you chose not to elect me president. Why? Some voters are hypocrites. They proclaim to support you but vote for other people. If you do not vote for me this time, you will have to explain." (Southen African News, Dec 16, 2005) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nigeria
To return Nigeria to civilian rule, the late military dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha, allowed only 5 political parties to be registered in 1996 and participate in the forthcoming elections. They all promptly chose HIM as their presidential candidate!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rwanda: On August 25, 2003, Paul Kagame, leader of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF), won 95.05 percent of the vote. His challenger, Faustin Twagiramungu, found his campaign stymied at every turn by government security forces. His rallies were canceled, his workers arrested and his brochures seized. On the eve of the voting, “police arrested 12 of Twagiramungu’s provincial organizers, saying they were preparing election day violence” (The Washington Times, Aug 28, 2003; p.A19). “In Twagiramungu’s home town, soldiers reportedly looked at ballot papers and ordered those who voted the wrong way to try again” (The Economist, Aug 30, 2003; p.32). Faustin Twagiramungu, won 3.62 percent and a third candidate, Jean Nepomuscene Nayinzira, had 1.33 percent (The New York Times, Aug 26, 2003; p.A6). In the 2010 elections Kagame won 93% of the vote and in the 2017 elections he won 99.98% of the vote! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Ghana’s 1996 presidential election, opposition candidate, Col. Erskine did not win a single vote in his own constituency. In other words, he did not would vote for himself and neither did his wife and four children. He was livid. When he complained bitterly on a radio program, the electoral commissioner tossed six votes his way. Marriage breaker election. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Egypt
In Egypt’s March 2018 elections all of those who expressed an interest to contest either  disappeared or were thrown into jail. The main challenger was arrested and his campaign manager beaten up. The only candidate allowed to run was Mousa Mostafa Mousa. He was a strong supporter of the president. In fact, his own party previously endorsed the incumbent, Abdel Fattahh al-Sisi, who won 97% of the vote. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Zimbabwe
In Zimbabwe’s July 2018 election bore all the hallmarks of the long-ruling ZANU-PF party’s usual machinations. Voters included more than 1,000 people about 100 years old and older; four were even born in the 1880s. Emmerson Mnangagwa (the incumbent) won 50.8% of votes to 44.3% for opposition leader Nelson Chamisa. He scraped through by the skin of his teeth to avoid a runoff! Yeah right! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Congo DR The Mother of all Coconut elections took place in Congo DR on Dec 30, 2018 after being twice postponed. Vote in 3 opposition areas were postponed to March 2019. Rest of the country voted on Dec 30. The Electoral Commissioner declared Felix Tshisekedi, an opposition candidate, as the winner on Jan 15. There was widespread speculation that the incumbent, Joseph Kabila, had made a secret pact with Tshisekedi. The Catholic Church disagreed with the results, giving the nod to another opposition candidate, Martin Fayulu, who declared himself president. A nasty political crisis erupted which wend its way to the Constitutional Court. Awoken out of its slumber, the African Union with indecent haste ordered the Court to hold off and wait for its high level and high profile delegation to come to Kinshasa to resolve the crisis. And the Chairman of the AU seeking to resolve an election dispute? Prez PAUL KAGAME of Rwanda who in Aug 2017 tossed his political rival, Diane Rwigara, into jail and won 99.98% of vote in presidential election https://goo.gl/URjASb The Court told the AU to butt out and mind his own business. It went ahead and confirmed Tshisekedi as the winner. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
State news: Mauritania's president mistakenly shot by his nation's troops
(CNN) -- Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who came under fire from his own troops just hours before, took to his country's airwaves Sunday, saying the shooting incident was an accident. "I want to reassure all citizens of my well-being after the accident committed by an army unit on an unpaved road around Touela. ... Everything is fine," he said in an interview broadcast on official Mauritanian television. Troops shot the president late Saturday in what the government is calling a case of "friendly fire" -- though others believe it may have been an assassination attempt. Aziz's convoy mistakenly came under fire as it was heading back toward the capital of Nouakchott, the official AMI news agency reported. The gunshots came from a military unit stationed alongside the road in the west African country. http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/13/world/africa/mauritania-president-shot/index.html By Amir Ahmed, CNN, October 14, 2012 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kenya
In Africa, most of the police are highway robbers and judges, crooks. Tell a police officer that you saw a minister stealing the people’s money and it is you he will arrest! Asked to investigate the brutal murders of Robert Ouko and British tourist, Julie Ward, Kenya police issued this report: “Foreign Minister Robert Ouko was presumed to have broken his own leg, shot himself in the head and set himself afire. Two years earlier, Kenyan officials suggested that a British tourist, Julie Ward, lopped off her own head and one of her legs before setting herself aflame” (The Washington Post, April 20, 2001; p. A19). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ghana
The security forces can unleash the full force of their fury on unarmed civilians with batons, tear gas, water canons and rubber bullets. But how really brave are the security forces? On 16 December 1998, Corporal C. Darko and Constable K. A. Boateng at a Police Station in Accra, Ghana, were instructed to go and arrest Samuel Quartey, who was reported to police for being involved in a theft case. "When the suspect came out brandishing a cutlass (a machete), the police officers took to their heels with the speed of lightning that could have made an enviable record had they been timed" (The Mirror, 2 Jan 1999, 1). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Soldiers on guard duties at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation no longer guard an observation post behind the TV studios because of a ghost who slaps officers who go on duty there at night. In September, 1994, an officer on guard at that sentry came running to the head of security complaining of an invincible hand which had on two occasions pulled his helmet from his head and slapped him. The senior officer, unmoved by the soldier's story, decided to prove him wrong by manning the post himself. Within an hour, the senior officer fled to the office telling a similar tale, this time the ghost allegedly smacked him four times on the face (Ghana Drum, Feb 1995; p.33). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nigeria
On July 23, 1998, Colonel Anthony Obi, Osun State's military administrator, strutted pompously to deliver a speech at a state function  at Osogbo in the southwestern part of Lagos, Nigeria.  As the Daily Champion (24 July 1998) reported: "Panic stricken Nigerian officials ran for safety when first a rat and then a python, apparently drawn by the smell of the rat, made a sudden appearance. The officials leapt up from their seats when the rat, described as having a "long snout and offensive smell," appeared from beneath the carpet by the high table. Colonel Anthony Obi, Osun State's military administrator, and his entourage nervously returned after security agents intervened and killed the beast. (p.1) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kenya
Ambushed by bunch of rag-tag cattle rustlers, Kenya’s elite presidential guards quickly surrendered. Johann Wandetto, a reporter for the People Daily, a newspaper in Kitale, Rift Valley province, submitted a story in the March 6, 1999 edition with the title: “Militia men rout 8 crack unit officers: Shock as Moi’s men surrender meekly.” Wandetto was immediately arrested and sentenced to 18 months in prison on what the court described as an “alarmist report” (Index on Censorship, 3/2000; p.99). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Congo DR
Nor can the security forces shoot straight. When civil war broke out in the DR Congo in 1997, Chad sent in troops to help the regime of Laurent Kabila stave off rebel attacks. What happened? “Congo rebels said 93 Chadian soldiers were killed in an ambush by Kabila government troops who mistook their identities. Chad, one of the nations allied with the Kabila regime, insisted the toll was lower” (The Wall Street Journal, Nov 12, 1998, A1). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sudan
And the mother of all security forces? When the African Union (AU) peacekeepers' base on the edge of Haskanita, a small town in southern Darfur, came under sustained rebel assault on Sept 29, 2007, they fled into the bush. “Ten were killed; at least 40 fled into the bush. The attackers looted the compound before Sudanese troops arrived to rescue the surviving peacekeepers” (The Economist, Oct 11, 2007; p.48) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ousted Mauritania leader in shock
The former president of the West African state of Mauritania has said he was stunned by the coup that ousted him from power. Army officers overthrew President Maaouiya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya in a bloodless revolt on Wednesday. Speaking for the first time since the coup, Mr Taya said he had been shocked to find out who was behind it. He was toppled by the former security chief and close colleague, Colonel Ely Ould Mohammed Vall. "My situation reminds me of the old adage: 'God, save me from my friends, I'll take care of my enemies'," President Taya told Radio France Internationale from Niger. "I was stunned by the coup d'etat [...] and even more so when I heard who were the authors," Mr Taya said. President Taya, who survived a number of coup attempts in his 21-year rule, was returning from the funeral of King Fahd in Saudi Arabia when the coup took place. Col Vall, 55, has been director of national security since 1987 and, after played a key role in the 1984 coup which brought Mr Taya to power. Critics accuse the government of using the US-led war on terror to crack down on his opponents. Mr Taya had also prompted widespread opposition by establishing links with Israel, making Mauritania one of only three Arab states to have done so. The following presidents were removed by members of their own security forces: Ben Ali of Tunisia in 2011, Hosni Mubarak of Egypt in 2011,  Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria in April 2019 and Omar al-Bashir of Sudan in April 2019. They never learn and keep spending more and more on security forces. In the end they are booted out by members of their own security forces.  Guinea
GUINEA: PRESIDENT ESCAPES ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT Guinea's leader, Lansana Conté,  survived an assassination attempt, his security minister said, after unidentified men in military uniforms fired on his convoy. Mr. Conté, 70, a diabetic chain-smoker who has no obvious successor and is rarely seen in public, later appeared on state television. Military officials said his bodyguards returned fire and foiled the attack. Security Minister Moussa Sampil said that an unspecified number of people had been detained. In his television address, Mr. Conté spoke of "external manipulations" against him but added, "Personally, I only fear my close aides, who pretend they are with me while they are not sincere." (Reuters, Jan 20, 2005). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hundreds of marauding soldiers fired guns in the air in the streets of Conakry and other towns around the country on Friday, further threatening the ability of Guinea's beleaguered president Lansana Conte to govern. Banks, schools, markets and shops all closed at around 11.30am as news spread that heavily armed soldiers were marching into town, after talks between senior military officials and soldiers at a military base near the airport collapsed. "We want the leaders who stole our wages and betrayed us to step down," one of the soldiers marching in central Conakry close to the presidential palace, told IRIN on Friday afternoon. In the morning IRIN also saw presidential guards, distinguished by their red berets, in the center of the city. They were shooting in the air in what appeared to be an attempt to scare off the mutinous soldiers, but the presidential guards were outnumbered and eventually FLED! Mercifully there is the Coconut Cure
In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, there is a place called "the magic corner," where all and sundry, including politicians, come to be relieved or cured of their problems. "Even those top leaders of the government come to that tree," said Shabuni Haruni, a private security guard. "Yes, during the election." Upon the payment of a small fee, a traditional healer ("witch doctor") would take a patient to a huge baobab tree, reputed to be the abode of ancestral spirits. Patients remove their shoes, kneel in front of the tree with their eyes closed. At one session described by The Washington Post correspondent, Karl Vick, "Rykia Selengia, a traditional healer, passed a coconut around and around the head of her kneeling client. The coconut went around the man's left arm, then the right, then each leg. When she handed the coconut to the client, Mussa Norris, he hurled it onto a stone. It shattered, releasing his problems to the winds." (The Washington Post, Nov 12, 2001; p. A21).
Taiwo Oyelabi, A 50-Year Old Man Confess Of Sleeping With His Own Daughter 5 Times - The Reason He Claims
Tumblr media
Taiwo Oyelabi, A 50-Year Old Man Confess Of Sleeping With His Own Daughter 5 Times - The Reason He Claims. A 50-year-old man, Taiwo Oyelabi, has been arrested for allegedly sleeping with his biological daughter. The suspect, who is currently being detained at the Gender Section of the Lagos State Police Command, was also accused of impregnating his 21-year-old daughter, Taiwo Nibilia Oyelabi. Confessing to newsmen, the suspect admitted having an affair with the young girl, saying he had canal knowledge of her only five times. “I only slept with my daughter five times and it took place in my house. She came to me the first time kissing me while I was lying down on my bed, and urging me to make love to her. At first I was surprise but I gradually yielded to her demand. “It all started some years back after my wife, who is also the girl’s mother moved out of my house over a minor domestic quarrel. She actually left with our twin kids while they were still young. At the time she left, she kept the children in the custody of my younger sister. “However, Taiwo came back to stay with me in 2017. That was how this whole drama started. Like I said, it was the girl who came to me for sex the first time, but I demanded for it subsequently. I thought of committing suicide when it dawned on me. I tried to take my own life twice. “There was a time when I tried to drink insecticide but some petty traders prevented me from doing so in my area. I also tried to jump into a well the second time, but was rescued by neighbours who saw me when I attempted to climb the well. I know it is the handwork of the devil and I pray that God and members of my family would have mercy on me,” he said. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who paraded the suspect before newsmen at the command headquarters, Ikeja, yesterday, said a case of incest was first reported at Igando Police Station on April 16. Edgal said the report was actually made by some concerned members of the public who felt sad about what was happening. He said that preliminary investigation carried out at Igando police station revealed that the suspect has had sexual intercourse with his daughter on several occasions. “Based on the findings at Igando, the case was transferred to the Gender Section of the Command on April 18, for a more in-depth investigations. The suspect, Taiwo Oyelabi, who resides at No. 15 Community Road, Obadore, Iyana Oba, while the victim is the suspect’s 21-year-old daughter. “Both have been having inappropriate sexual liaison, the result of the unholy alliance between father and daughter was pregnancy. Investigation into the case revealed that the suspect is a security man but the strange part of his work was that whenever he was going to work, he goes with his daughter. This strange behavior attracted the attention of the community and they reported to the police,” Edgal told newsmen. Meanwhile, in line with its objective to rid Lagos of all criminal elements, the state police command yesterday paraded 20 suspected armed robbers and three cultists arrested in different incidents. The suspects, according to the state police boss, Edgal, were arrested between April 8 and last week Sunday. Giving a breakdown of the arrests, he said Damilola Oluwole, 27; Seyi Adebayo and Olasupo Jeremiah, were apprehended on April 8, following complaint from the management of AB Hotel at Shogunle that the premises was attacked by armed robbers. He said the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) operatives from Mushin were directed to fish out the culprits, which they did within 24 hours. He said a locally-made pistol, one expended and five live cartridges were recovered from the robbers’ hideout at Akala, Mushin. Also, four other suspected armed robbers were arrested on April 17, at about 11:00a.m. while they were about to sell a Highlander Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) they snatched at gunpoint. He said: “Operatives of FSARS at Mushin were dispatched and thy intercepted the suspects. The team arrested one Olamilekan Lamidi alias Dudu with the said vehicle at Ogunsanga Street, Mushin. “They followed up on the case and arrested Yusuf Jimoh, 36, Isah Ogungbenro, 29, Sulaiman Osayemi, 28, and Seun Shoneye, 29. One of the suspects, Osayemi led detectives to Idi-Araba where a Toyota Highlander SUV, three locally made short guns and eight live cartridges were recovered. “On April 20, at about 5:30p.m., one Raphael Oluwanisola of 1, Adeniyi Castro Street, Alagbado was arrested along Ile-Iwe Road, Meiran. They flagged down a man carrying a bag on a motorcycle. Upon questioning him, he said he was a thrift collector and attempted to bribe the policemen with N5,000. “The officers refused the offer and suspected something was wrong. He immediately jumped down from his motorcycle and started running but he was pursued, apprehended and his bag searched. Three locally-made cut-to-size pistols and 11 cartridges were recovered from him. Also arrested in a separate incident were one Noah Olaniyi, Moshood Fatai, Segun Ajibade and Abiola Ige while attempting to sell their stolen loots – two laptops, one iPad and three handsets, to one Lukman, the receiver of stolen goods. The CP said a search warrant was executed at the receiver’s house and three additional laptops were recovered from him. Meanwhile, one Barrister Arowole Gabriel, who had earlier reported the theft of his electronic gadgets from his shop in Mushin, has identified the recovered items as his. This prompted a fresh quizzing of the receiver and he confessed that one Azeez, also currently at large, sold the laptop to him. He said all arrested suspects would be charged to court for prosecution. Read the full article
Worst California biker feud in decade erupted at Starbucks| Reuters
By Jason Kandel | LOS ANGELES LOS ANGELES A turf war between the Hells Angels and a rival motorcycle gang that erupted outside a California Starbucks shop last year has left several men dead, wounded or missing in three states, stirring fears of more bloodshed. Ranked by law enforcement as the most severe clash of two California-based biker groups in nearly a decade, the spate of violence turned deadly last month when it spilled into Nevada with a brawl and shooting among members of the Hells Angels and Vagos motorcycle clubs. The president of the Hells Angels' San Jose, California, chapter, Jeffrey "Jethro" Pettigrew, 51, was shot to death, and one Vagos member was wounded in the melee at John Ascuaga's Nugget hotel and casino in Sparks. A second Vagos member was wounded in a drive-by shooting the next day at the site of a nearby motorcycle rally in town. The Pettigrew killing -- coming 11 months after a gunfight between the two gangs in Arizona that left five people wounded -- in turn sparked tensions within the Hells Angels' ranks that led to yet another slaying in California, authorities say. "There have been concerns about this rivalry for some time," said Graham Barlowe, resident agent in charge of the Sacramento office of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
youtube
The last California biker feud of similar proportions grew out of a 2002 casino riot in Laughlin, Nevada, between the Hells Angels and another group known as the Mongols, Barlowe said. At least three bikers died as a result of that conflict. DEAD OR ALIVE The latest casualty of the Hells Angels' recent battle against Vagos actually was inflicted by one of their own. At Pettigrew's funeral in California weeks after he was slain in Nevada, his close friend and sergeant-at-arms of the San Jose chapter, Steven Tausan, 52, was shot and killed by a fellow Hells Angel in an apparent quarrel among club members. A police source familiar with the investigation said Tausan and others confronted the accused gunman, Steve Ruiz, over his perceived failure to have protected Pettigrew during the Nugget casino brawl, prompting Ruiz to pull a gun on Tausan. A group of bikers then pounced on Ruiz as thousands of mourners streamed out of the cemetery, preventing police officers at the funeral from making an arrest, San Jose police spokesman Jose Garcia said. In the end, it was unclear whether the bikers who descended on Ruiz did so to subdue him, beat him or help him escape, but witnesses said he was whisked away in a car, Garcia said. Suspecting that Ruiz may have been killed at the scene and his body dumped into Pettigrew's grave, police later obtained a search warrant to dig up the burial site, but they found no trace of Ruiz, Garcia said. Last week, San Jose police received a tip that Ruiz was alive and hiding out in the northern California city of Stockton, but he was believed to have slipped away after investigators searched a home there to no avail on Saturday. Garcia said authorities now believe Ruiz is on the run with a current or former girlfriend, noting that he has family and associates in Arizona and New York. The recent bloodshed can all be traced to last year's push by Vagos, founded in the 1960s in a Southern California desert community, into the northern coastal town of Santa Cruz, long claimed as Hells Angels territory, police said. CAFFEINE FOR BIKERS Tensions boiled over in January 2010, when members of the rival gangs, some wielding ball-peen hammers, fought outside a Santa Cruz Starbucks before scattering as police arrived. "It was all about who would be allowed to hang out at the Starbucks downtown," Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark said. "The Vagos brazenly came in and tried to cement their presence. It was a pretty strong play on their part to establish themselves as the premiere club." He added: "Only in Santa Cruz would you have biker wars over who's going to control pumpkin spice lattes." Seven months after the Starbucks ambush, violence between the two groups flared again in a gunfight in August 2010 that left five people wounded and led to 27 arrests in the northern Arizona town of Chino Valley. The U.S. Justice Department has classified both the Hells Angels and Vagos as outlaw gangs deeply involved in drug and weapons trafficking, as well as extortion, money laundering, theft and various violent crimes. The Hells Angels, by far the larger and better known of the two, was founded in 1948 in Fontana, California, and has since established over 230 chapters with an estimated 2,000 to 2,500 members worldwide, the government says. The organization denies its involvement in criminal activity and argues the club should not be blamed for the illegal actions of individual bikers. Members insist the overwhelming majority are law-abiding citizens who share a love of powerful motorcycles, especially Harley-Davidsons and choppers, and point to their prominent role in certain charity events as evidence that their outlaw reputation is exaggerated by the media. Karen Snell, a San Francisco-based lawyer who has represented a number of Hells Angels members, said Pettigrew and Tausan, for example, were "family guys." "They made honest livings. They worked hard and were responsible," she told Reuters. Police have arrested two people in connection with last month's casino brawl, including Ernesto Manuel Gonzalez, 53, a Vagos member suspected in Pettigrew's slaying. Fred and Rosemary West
Synopsis
Frederick Walter Stephen West was an English serial killer who committed at least 12 murders between 1967 and 1987 in Gloucestershire, England. The majority of the killings occurred with his second wife, Rosemary West. Most of the women were young and were used as a part of the Wests’ sexual fetishes. These included rape, bondage, torture and mutilation; the victims' dismembered bodies were typically buried in the cellar or garden of the Wests' Cromwell Street home
Tumblr media
Early Life
Fred was one of six children and was said to be a troublesome boy growing up. He later claimed he was sexual abused by his mother and that his father did have incestuous relations with young girls. West didn't do well in school and eventually dropped out to become a farm laborer. At 17, a motorcycle accident left him comatose for a week with serious head injuries. A metal plate was placed in his head that may have affected his behavior and impulse control according to some experts.
Disturbing Behavior
West's subsequent behavior was erratic and he became known to the police for various petty crimes. Then in 1961, he was accused of impregnating a 13-year-old girl who was a friend of the Wests, causing his banishment from the family home. He became a construction worker, but was soon caught stealing from his employers and again having sex with minors. At his trial for the rape of the young family friend, he escaped a jail sentence as it was claimed that he was suffering fits as a result of his head trauma, but he was convicted of child molestation.
Tumblr media
Marriage
He became involved with Rena Costello, a Scottish girl who had a police record for burglary and prostitution. At the time, she was pregnant with another man's child. She and West were married in November 1962 and a child was born in March 1963, whom they called Charmaine. But trouble continued to brew, as West's new job as an ice cream van driver gave him steady access to young teenagers who fell prey to his interests. In 1964, Rena bore West's child, daughter Anna Marie. It was also at this time that they met Anna McFall. McFall was a friend with whom they moved to Gloucester, where West found a job in a slaughterhouse. According to some researchers, this profession may have catalyzed his morbid obsession with death, mutilation and dismemberment. Soon the Wests’ marriage became increasingly unstable and Rena returned to Scotland, leaving her children with West and McFall, but she returned some months later to find them living together in a caravan.
In 1967, McFall became pregnant with West's child, she asked him to divorce Rena and marry her instead. However, West was unwilling to do so. He then killed the pregnant McFall that July and buried her near the caravan park. Thereafter, Rena moved into the caravan following McFall's disappearance. Shortly after McFall’s death, West was linked to another disappearance, that of 15-year-old Mary Bastholm. She was abducted from a bus stop in Gloucester in January 1968, although only circumstantial evidence has ever been produced to corroborate this. Then in November 1968 he became acquainted with Rose Letts, who was to become his next wife and life-long accomplice.
Tumblr media
Rose West
Rosemary West was known to have poor school performance and bouts of aggression growing up. She also had a weight problem in adolescence and developed an interest in older men. Her parent’s marriage was quite turbulent. Her father was a paranoid schizophrenic prone to violent behavior. Daisy, her mother, moved out of the family home - taking Rose with her. Rose, however, decided to move back in with her father again around the same time that she became intimate with West during her teens. Her father objected strongly to their relationship, resorting to contacting social services and threatening West directly, but to no avail. Rose was soon pregnant with West's child and found herself looking after his two children by Rena Costello when West was sent to prison on various petty theft and fine evasion charges. Rose gave birth to daughter Heather in 1970.
 It's is believed that the pressure of caring for three children while still a child herself was a trigger for Rose's violent, erratic tendencies. It is alleged that she murdered 8-year-old Charmaine, West's eldest child, in 1971, during one of these outbursts. As West was in jail at the time, it is likely that her body was hidden by Rose until West's release. He was then thought to have moved the body, again removing the fingers and toes, as with his first victim, before burying her. This knowledge of Rose's murderous act undoubtedly gave West a significant hold over the young woman. When West's first wife, Rena, came in search of her daughter, she was strangled, dismembered and also had her fingers and toes removed. She was buried in the same general area as West's first victim, Anna McFall. Fred and Rose West married in Gloucester in January 1972, and their second daughter, Mae, was born in June of the same year. With a growing family, they moved to 25 Cromwell Street, which was large enough to enable them to take in lodgers to assist with the rent.
Tumblr media
Working Together
By this time, Rose earned extra money as a prostitute and West committed acts of bondage and violent sex acts on underage girls. He fitted out the cellar at No. 25 as a torture chamber, and his daughter, Anna Marie, became one of its first occupants, subjected to a horrifically brutal rape by her father while her stepmother held her down. This became a regular occurrence, and the child was threatened with beatings if she told anyone of her ordeal. Their behavior extended beyond the family circle when, in late 1972, they hired 17-year-old Caroline Owens as a nanny. She was incarcerated, stripped and raped. Despite threats that she would be killed and buried in the cellar, Owens was able to make an escape and reported the Wests to the police. Charges were brought against them.
Incredibly, despite his existing criminal record, West was able to convince a 1973 court magistrate that Owens had consented to the activities. Owens was too deeply traumatized over what she had survived to give testimony. The Wests both escaped with fines. Rose was pregnant at the time with their first son, Stephen, who was born in August. Over the next several years, Lynda Gough, Lucy Partington, Juanita Mott, Therese Siegenthaler, Alison Chambers, Shirley Robinson and 15-year-old schoolgirls Carol Ann Cooper and Shirley Hubbard all became victims of the Wests. After brutal sexual attacks, all were murdered, dismembered and buried in the cellar under 25 Cromwell Street.
Tumblr media
Rose had several more children, and daughter Louise was born in 1978. Barry joined the brood in 1980, with Rosemary Junior following in 1982 and Lucyanna in 1983. The children were aware to some extent of the activities in the house, but West and Rose exercised strict control over them. West's sexual interest in his own daughters didn't wane either, and when Anna Marie moved out to live with her boyfriend, he switched his attentions to younger siblings, Heather and Mae. Although, Heather resisted his attentions and in 1987, told a friend about the goings on in the house. The Wests responded by murdering and dismembering her, and burying her in the back garden of No. 25, where son Stephen was forced to assist with digging the hole. This appeared to be a warning to the rest of the children. Given that the Wests' vicious sex acts did not result in murder every time, and the sheer number of attacks, it was inevitable that someone would expose their activities. Detective Constable Hazel Savage led a search at Cromwell Street in August of 1992 that found pornography and clear evidence of child abuse. West was arrested for rape and sodomy of a minor, and Rose for assisting in the rape of a minor.
“Breaking of Glass Led Police to Roof,” Toronto Star. November 18, 1932. Page 2. --- Falls Through Skylight Into Beer Warehouse and Arrests Man ---- John Dickie, 24, and Harold Marshall, 25, both of Jones Ave., were remanded in men’s court to-day by Magistrate Robert J. Browne on a charge of shopbreaking. Bail was fixed at $2,000 and the accused men will appear on Nov. 25.
The noise of shattering glass in a brewer’s warehouse at Queen St. and Logan Ave. led to their arrest last night by P.S. John Reid, P.C. Pillinger, Sergeant William Nevin and Motorcycle Officer Henderson.
Hearing the tinkling of failing glass, P.S. Reid made his way to the roof of the warehouse and followed tracks in the snow to a skylight. By accident the officer fell and scrambled nearly 30 feet to the interior of the building.
On recovering from his precipitate entry he discovered Marshall crouching behind some beer cartons. He was promptly arrested.
Reinforcements were summoned and Dickie was found loitering in a lane beside the building. He too was taken into custody and jointly charged
Joe Mackovitz, a swarthy gipsy of heavy build, was charged with theft. It was alleged that he stole a quantity of brass, china, and glassware from a shopkeeper. Counsel W. B. Horkins told how the daughter of the accused had been presented with the things on the occasion of her wedding.
‘I suppose this man received the stuff from a friend of a friend’s friend,’ said Crown Attorney Malone. ‘We would have to race gipsy history to its source to learn the truth.’
The case was dismissed.
George Berryhill pleaded not guilty to the theft of an auto and the case was dismissed by Magistrate Browne.
Seven ‘drunks’ and two remanded ‘vags’ came before Magistrate Arthur Tinker in early men’s court today. Not one of them suffered a fine and only one will go to ‘the farm.’
George Garbutt was the one fated to go to jail for three months for drunkenness. He had pleaded guilty to the charge.
‘Were you here in September?’ asked Magistrate Tinker. ‘I guess so,’ replied accused reluctantly.
‘Were you here in August?’ “I think I was,’ came the still more reluctant reply.
‘Too often,’ advised the bench.
‘Give me a chance and let me go to Orillia,’ begged the repeater.
‘Three months,’ thundered the cadi.
Four more of the intoxicated ones were remanded for sentence. Two were put in the case of Captain Mason of the Church Army.
William ‘Red’ Juett, charged with vagrancy, will go to Hamilton with the help of Captain Bunton of the Salvation Army.
Another man will also return to the mountain city. He is Fred Plausterer. He was charged with vagrancy. He will take up farming.
Pearce Accused of Theft Charged with shopbreaking, Oscar Campbell was remanded until Dec. 2. Bail was set at $2,000.
Rupert Rive, with five counts of fraud against him, was remanded until Nov. 30. His own bail of $250 was accepted.
‘Six hundred dollars is involved in this charge of theft,’ said Crown Attorney Malone when William Pearce appeared.
‘He will be remanded until Nov. 25 on a bond of $1,000,’ said the bench.
‘Rainbow! Rainbow!’ rang out the voices of the court officers. No, they weren’t crying out in amazement at the beauty of a rainbow. They were crying out in vain for William Rainbow. He was charged with shopbreaking.
For a long time the accused man could not be located and the officers made the corridors of the city hall ring with echoes of ‘Rainbow!’ Finally, when he was located, he was remanded until Nov. 25.
Took Cameras Says Charge Patrick O’Shea and Louis Seadling pleaded guilty to a charge of theft. They were accused of taking two cameras, a set of wrenches, a flashlight, and two grease guns from a department store.
They claimed that they had found some of the articles in a restaurant.
‘There may be some truth in your story,’ said Magistrate Browne.
The accused men were put on suspended sentence and probation for a year.
Charged with being drunk, Fred Z. Bryan was remanded until Nov. 25 on a bail of $200.
May Pay $50 Fine A breach of the Inland Revenue Act cost Louis Fritsch $50 or 30 days.
Two hundred dollars was required to bond Vincent Ziolkowski over until Dec. 2. He was charged with aggravated assault.
K. Munro, Sidney Godfrey and George Marshall were charged with attempting to steal some overcoats from a church on Gerrard street. A witness told he had seen two boys coming out of the basement of the church.
The only one to plead guilty was Marshall, and all three were called upon to give evidence.
The charge against Godfrey was dismissed.
‘I believe Marshall has told the truth about the whole affair,’ said Magistrate Browne. ‘And because he has no previous convictions I will put him on suspended sentence and probation for one year.’
Munro, 17, had served three and 12 months in Burwash, and the magistrate said he was not inclined to believe his version of the story.
‘He’s been in trouble before, and he’s afraid he will get punished again if he tells what he did,’ said Mr. Malone.
Munro was put on suspended sentence and probation for two years.
“Russians Charged With $8,000 Theft In ‘Gold Brick’ Case,” Toronto Globe. February 25, 1932. Page 10 & 11. ----- Highway Officer Stops One-Light Car and Men Accused of Old-Time Swindle Are Arrested ---- WARRANTS ISSUED LAST DECEMBER ---- Through his alertness to duty in stopping an automobile with only one headlight burning on the highway at Lakeview last night, Provincial Officer Arthur Bosworth of Port Credit brought about the arrest of three alleged ‘gold brick’ swindlers wanted wanted for stealing $8,000.
The men under arrest are: P. Samsanoff, alias Victor Malley (3), and George Morris, of 581 Shaw Street; Alex Fediko, 838 Wright Street, Crowland (1); and William Dimitroff, 87 Portland Street (2). Samsanoff and Fediko were arrested by Officer Bosworth, while a third man took flight from the car and disappeared across farmland. Dimitroff was taken into custody late last night in a house on King Street West by Detectives Alexander and Skinner.
Searching the back of the automobile he stopped, the Provincial officer found a ‘gold brick’ wrapped in a piece of paper. Taking his prisoners and the car to Port Credit, the officer got in touch with the local police, who at once recalled having warrants for the men for theft of $4,000 in a confidence game alleged to have been played on Peter Michaluk, 66 Denison Avenue, on Dec. 24, last.
To Detectives Alexander and Skinner Samsanoff is alleged to have implicated himself and the other accused in two other thefts involving alleged ‘gold-brick’ swindles. One, it is said, was in Montreal for $2,000 and another in Thorold for $2,000. In the latter case, it is alleged, a woman was defrauded. Provincial Police state that they have been holding warrants for both these cases. The prisoners now also face these two additional charges.
Police say Dimitroff, when arrested, had $2,400 in cash in his possession.
Flees Across Country Samsanoff was driving the automobile when the motorcycles man signalled him to stop. As the men got out to see what was one wrong, one of the trio is alleged to have represented himself as a police officer. Seeing, police stated, that this story did not impress the officer, he took to his heels and was last seen fleeing across farmland.
Michaluk, detectives said, was relieved of his money by one of the oldest’ international flimflam games known in police annals.
On Dec. 24 Michaluk alleges one of the men under arrest met him and, gaining his confidence, related a story of knowing a man who had a gold brick which could be bought for $4,000 and sold for double the money to a jeweler. An impressive story was unfolded to the victim, who claims he was given assurance that the purchase would be transferred into a resale almost immediately.
Drew $4,000 From Bank. Michaluk went to the bank and drew $4,000, consisting, he says, of sixty bills of $50 denominations and fifty $20 notes. With these he went to a hotel, where, he claims, he was introduced to the man who offered the gold brick for sale. The transaction was made, when Michaluk, carrying the gold brick, left the hotel in company of the alleged thief and got in a motor car. They drove to High Park, on the way, Michaluck thought, to meet the jeweler who was to have offered him $8,000 for his recent purchase.
When driving in the park, another man, alleged to have been driven by a third confederate in the swindle, headed off the taxi in a car jumping out, introduced himself as a police officer.
Says Arrest Pretended. Opening the door of the car, he is said to have demanded the gold brick and, according to the complainant’s story, pretended to be putting Samsanoff under arrest. Michaluk was frightened, he claims, that he might be implicated for high-grading, and disappeared, not even telling the police he had been duped until several days after the occurrence.
The motor car and gold brick were turned over to Detective Sergeants Levitt and Hicks at Port Credit, and were brought to headquarters, along with the two prisoners.
Brick Weighs Forty Pounds Lakeview, Feb. 24 - (Special.) - Smart work on the part of Provincial Officer Arthur Bosworth tonight resulted in the apprehension of two men wanted by the Toronto police for the alleged theft of $4,000 in connection with a ‘gold brick’ scheme. Not only did the officer arrest the two men, but actually secured one of the ‘gold bricks,’ the specimen weighing about forty pounds.
While patrolling the highway at Lakeview the officer noticed the approach of a car with one light. He immediately ordered the driver to pull up, which he did.
‘I noticed that there were two foreigners in the car, and became suspicious,’ declared the office to The Globe. ‘When I ordered the men out of the car, I saw that there was a third man in the back seat. They refused to come out when I ordered them, but, after a warning, finally obeyed. Just as I was about to search the car, the third man started to run, and made a getaway, while the other two stood alongside the car. Proceeding to carry out my search, I found one of the ‘gold bricks,’ which weighed about forty pounds.
‘Having description of the men wanted by the Toronto police, I quickly realized that I had them there, and without delay ordered the pair back into the car and took them to Port Credit Police Station.’
Confronted with the ‘brick,’ the two men, who gave their names as Elias P. Samsonoff, Russian, aged 35, of 581 Shaw Street, Toronto, and Alec Fediko, 58, of 858 Wright Street, Crowland, Ont., also a Russian declares that the brick was a lump of brass, according to the officer, who expressed his belief that the third man who escaped was the ‘policeman’ figuring in the scheme.
Toronto police were notified and later took the two men to the city.
Photo Caption: ‘ALL IS NOT GOLD...’ Above is shown the so-called ‘gold brick’ which police said figured in an alleged theft of $4,000 from Peter Michaluk, 66 Denison Avenue, on Dec. 24, in one of the oldest confidence games known to police. The brick was found last night in a car driven by two of three men under arrest charged with the theft of the $4,000.
--////-- “$4,000 For Gold Brick,” Toronto Star. March 15, 1932. Page 2. ---- A fake gold brick, that weighed some 30 pounds, was exhibit A in police court to-day, when two Russians, Peter Samsonoff and William Demetroff, appeared charged with theft of $4,000 from a compatriot.
Complainant, Peter Michaluk, through Interpreter Markovitch, told the court that he had met the accused men and that he had agreed to purchase the brick at a price of $4,000, on their presenting that it could be sold at approximately 100 per cent. profit. The accused had introduced him to a man named Paul Snyder, who had told him that he would purchase the brick. On the strength of this assurance he purchased the brick, only to find that it was not gold at all.
The bench committed the accused for trial.
“‘Gold-Brick’ Gang Alleged In Arrest,” Toronto Globe. March 25, 1932. Page 9. ---- Crowland Man Taken in Custody at New Toronto ---- HAMIILTON WARRANTS ---- Alex. Fediko of Crowland, Ont., alleged member of a gang of ‘gold-brick men’ who, police charge, secured $12,000 in two months in confidence games, was arrested in a house on Sixth Street, New Toronto, last night by Detectives Alexander and Skinner and Chief Padgett of New Toronto.
Fediko is wanted in Hamilton, charged with conspiracy to defaud James Torek of that city of $2,400. On Feb. 24, Fediko, together with Peter Samsonoff and William Demetro, now in Toronto Jail awaiting trial on a charge of flim-flamming a foreigner of $4,000, are alleged to have sold a gold brick to Torek.
The three men were arrested on the night of the Hamilton confidence trick as they were driving in a car on the highway. Fediko was questioned by police, and, after being held in custody, was released. Demetro, when arrested, had $2,400 cash. Of this amount $2,000 was in his pocket, and $400 in $100 notes was found by Detectives Alexander and Skinner in his sock.
It was not until yesterday that police were informed of the Hamilton flim-flam and when the Hamilton police sent on warrants for the arrest of the three men the detectives motored to New Toronto, where they picked up Fediko.
--///-- “Gold-Brick Plotters Get 3-Year Terms,” Toronto Star. March 31, 1932. Page 3. ----- Judge Sorry Couldn’t Make It Longer ----- Terms of three years in Portsmouth Penitentiary were imposed upon Peter Samsonoff and William Demitroff by Judge Widdiefield in county criminal court to-day when they pleaded guilty to receiving and retaining in their possession $4,000 obtained by theft and false pretences from Peter Michaluk, a fellow-countryman. The crown alleged that the accused sold Michaluk a brick which they presented as being solid gold and of great value, whereas, in reality, only a small corner was gold and this for the purpose of convincing their prospective customer.
‘I am sorry that I can’t make it more,’ Judge Widdifield told the accused men.
“Gold-Brick Victims Both Want The Cash,” Toronto Star. April 6, 1932. Page 3. ---- Writ of Restitution to Hamilton Man May Upset Toronto Injunction ---- Special to The Star Hamilton, April 6. - A supreme court injunction obtained by Peter Michaluk, Toronto, against Chief Draper restraining the chief constable from paying money recovered by the Toronto police from William Demetro and Peter Samsonoff, members of the gold brick gang which has defrauded residents of Toronto, Montreal, Hamilton, and Thorold of over $12,000, may be overridden by a writ of restitution asked of Magistrate Burbidge on behalf of Efrim Torek, who was victimized by the same gang of $2,400 last February.
A writ was issued by Michaluk who had been defrauded by the gang on December 24 of $4,000, when Demetro and Samsonoff were convicted two works ago in a Toronto court. The writ was issued to tie up the $2,400 found in Demetro’s possession at the time of his arrest. Michaluk’s claim was that the $2,400 was part of his $4,000.
Evidence in city court to-day showed that the money claimed by Michaluk is the same currency which Torek gave the two accused in an uptown hotel here last February.
Magistrate Burbidge announced in court to-day he would issue a writ of restitution which will probably be issued to Toronto police.
“Sold $3 Worth Brass For $2,400; Three Jailed,” Ottawa Citizen. April 7, 1932. Page 20. ---- (Canadian Press) HAMILTON, Ont., April 6. - Three men who sold $3 worth of brass for $2,400 were sentenced to three years in penitentiary today, William Dimitrow and Peter Samsonoff, Toronto, and Alexander Fedike, worked the hoary ‘gold brick’ stunt on Efin Torek in a Toronto hotel room. The brick, they claimed, was worth $4,000. Torek ‘bit’ and reported the matter to police later.
[AL: There were quite a few more stories I can find about the ‘gold brick gang’, including the police trying to track down other possible leads, and cancelling the cheques issued to the three men. All three were in fact sentenced for conspiracy as well as false pretences. All three were naturalized immigrants long resident in Canada.
Alexander Fediko (1, left) was 27 at time of conviction, a Russian immigrant, was married with a child, and worked as a weaver and carpenter though he had been out of work for some months. Fediko had previously been in the Mimico Reformatory and at Kingston Penitentiary before, in the 1925-1927 period. This time around, Fediko was convict #2595. He worked in the mason gang, outside the walls. He did not participate in the 1932 riot, though he did have some complaints to share. Fediko found that the doctor did not help him with his catarrh and earaches. He wished for more writing paper because he could not write his mother and a his wife in the same month due to limits on this privilege. He also wished for more recreation. He was apparently pleased with the reforms after the riot, and continued to work in masonry. He was released on parole in May 1934.
William Demitroff (2, centre) was 45, married, born in Ukraine, and also known as Wesley Dimitro. He had previously been in the penitentiary back in 1923. At Kingston Penitentiary this time, he was convict #2599. Like Fediko, he worked in the mason gang outside the walls, helping to build the new Prison for Women. Demitroff claimed he had no complaints and did not support the riot, though he agreed with some of its demands - cigarette papers, recreation, entertainment. The food he “had nothing against” but thought there should be soup for men “with weak stomachs.” Demitroff continued to work on the outside gang, and was paroled December 1933. He would come back to the penitentiary in 1936.
Peter Samsonoff (3, right) also known as Victor Molly, was 36, married, Russian, a tailor by trade, and marked with a tattoo on his forearm showing ‘P.M.C.’ At Kingston Penitentiary he was convict #2600. He worked in the tailor shop, and given his lack of criminal record was transferred to the low security Collin’s Bay camp in May 1932. He was released from there in December 1933 by parole. Samsonoff would come back to prison, like Demitroff, in 1936.]
Ewing leaving the plant with a cart-load of groceries. An official said that for some months they had been missing groceries. ‘We became suspicious.of Wingate five weeks ago. He was employed as a watchman,’ he said.
