25,000 in Athens commemorate uprising against military junta

In Athens, 25,000 people took to the streets on Sunday to mark the 51st anniversary of the uprising at the Polytechnic University.

The uprising in November 1973 was directed against the military junta that had been in power since 1967. Young people and students refused to accept the repression and restrictions on freedom of expression, opposition and civil rights and formed the core of the resistance movement.

The occupation of the university was brutally crushed on November 17, when tanks and military troops stormed the campus and murdered students. The Polytechnio uprising became a symbol of resistance and contributed significantly to the destabilization of the regime, which collapsed in July 1974.

To this day, November 17 is a central day of the Greek revolutionary movement, on which current social struggles also play an important role. Yesterday's demonstration, for example, was characterized by broad solidarity with Palestine.

Another Roma teen was shot dead during a car chase with the police. Initial reporting on the policeman’s gun firing by mistake seems to be overturned by testimonies and videos that indicate that the policeman might have breached the police’s code of conduct and accusations, according to which the perpetrators might have even “washed” the scene of the crime before evidence was collected.

SYRIZA is disintegrating under its new leader, Kasselakis, who appeared quite authoritative in the Central Committee. For the first time in almost a decade, polls showed PASOK coming second after ND instead of SYRIZA.
