I have a unpopular opinion of sorts and I wanna know if you agree.
I would literally rage if Bi-Han dies in the first game and becomes Noob Saibot. Turning Bi-Han into Noob is character assassination at this point because they do NOTHING with the character, despite multiple opportunities to do so. (I.e D’VORAH KILLS SCORPION? NOT NOOB? IS THIS A JOKE?!)
On top of that, I like Kuai Liang but I feel like Bi-Han is more interesting and has more of an opportunity for character development. He isnt perfect and good and nice all the time. Hes the perfect contrast. He’s prideful, vain, disrespectful, and power hungry. But he can also be strong, brave, and good if he was redeemed. Also we already had Kuai Liang so many times theres not much they can do with him as Sub Zero anymore.
I actually agree pretty much word for word with you nonny. I really won’t be that surprised though if Bi-Han does die in MK1 though, we got him as Sub-Zero for what four chapters in MK9 just to see him get killed? I suppose there’s at least story and plot progression in MK9 but if they do the same in MK1 for the third freaking time I’m driving to Chicago and kicking Boon in the head and plucking every single hair from his unibrow. I’m sick of Bi-Han dying all the time. I’m also sick of them absolutely wasting Noob as a kharacter, he’s supposed to be a stronger version of Bi-Han, ya know the badass who kills gods for fun, yet regular human Sonya can beat him? Regular human Jacqui and her regular human father can beat him? It’s fucking dumb. Btw I’m not trying to bash any of these kharacters it just doesn’t make sense power level wise.
I also feel like we’ve seen all we can with Kuai Liang as Sub-Zero, it’s time for the OG to shine. I want psycho, unbalanced, uses a skull and spinal column for a weapon Sub-Zero. I want to see what they can do with Bi-Han outside of a few epic but hilarious one-liners. He’s a freaking beast, let us see it! I want the good, the bad the everything in between. I want Bi-Han to get the same development and depth Kuai Liang got because even as Noob he’s basically just reduced to a power hungry asshole, and ya know maybe deep down Bi-Han just is a power hungry asshole. Which is fine if they explore it and show us why he’s a power hungry asshole (i.e. to prove to Papa/Grandpa Zero he’s worthy of the mantle of Sub-Zero or he’s worthy of being the Lin Kuei’s number one to protect his brother etc.) there is definitely more to him than just him being a dick and I hope we finally get to see his full range.

New game! Nikola Tesla: War of the Currents
New game! "Nikola Tesla: War of the Currents" by Dora Klindžić is now available on Steam, iOS and Android. It's 33% off until May 19.
https://www.choiceofgames.com/war-of-the-currents/
At the dawn of the electrical age, can you outsmart Thomas Edison and electrify the world? Rewrite history with worldwide wireless power, alien contact, death rays and sapient machines!
"Nikola Tesla: War of the Currents" is a 225,000-word interactive science-fiction novel by Dora Klindžić. It's entirely text-based, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.
The man who invented the 20th century was a queer immigrant from Serbia. Nikola Tesla dreamed of distributing free energy to all of mankind but passed away in a New York hotel room alone and forgotten. What if it had gone differently?
In the year 1886, you join the eccentric Tesla as his laboratory apprentice. Notoriously bad at monetizing his inventions, but nonetheless ingenious at building them, Tesla needs your help with making a living wage as much as your help in the lab.
Fend off Edison’s spies, Wall Street bankers, electrical industry magnates and other unsavory types as you navigate real historical adventures involving electrocuted elephants, the Niagara Falls electric plant, pigeons, and that time Mark Twain had the mishap of soiling his trousers in Tesla’s lab.
Develop your own science skills, your social life, or opt to be more business-minded. Manage your mentor’s fragile mental state while balancing your laboratory’s checkbook. Love your work, your pigeon, or pursue a risqué romance with Edison’s daughter. Will you manage to maintain enough funding and influence to prevent the destruction of Wardenclyffe tower and perform the most esoteric of experiments? Bring free power to all, contact the aliens, or accidentally flatten a city. The history of the last great independent inventor, as well as the future of society, are in your hands.
• Play as male, female, or non-binary; gay, straight, bi, or asexual/aromantic. • Achieve fame through spectacular inventions, people skills or cunning business. • Change historic events such as the invention of the electric chair, the Chicago World Fair, the social unrest at the turn of the 20th century, and more. • Monetize your inventions or uphold Tesla’s ideals of working for the betterment of mankind. • Uncover secret societies lurking in the background of early-capitalist New York. • Meet a cast of historic characters such as Thomas Edison and his family, George Westinghouse, Mark Twain, J.P. Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, Lewis Latimer, Charles Steinmetz, Lord Kelvin and many more.
The world awaits in darkness, ready for your electric light.

harry potter characters ass musical songs (i'm not big with musicals, and so only have ideas about regular music and am interested in your thoughts)?
My dear nonnie, thank you ever so much for this question. I love getting these types of asks.
This was a challenge in the best way. I loved thinking of the HP characters and matching them to a song that captured their development or personality. I hope you enjoy this list, and that it might spark further interest in musicals for you. And if you'd like any recommendations of shows, just shoot me an ask or a DM!
Also--if you want to watch something super funny, look up "A Very Potter Musical" by Starkid. They've done 3 parody musicals based on Harry Potter and they're fantastic. Lauren Lopez, who plays Draco, is fantastic. It also has Darren Criss as Harry; you might know him from "Glee" or the Gianni Versace show.
Without further ado, here are HP characters as musical theater songs.
Harry Potter: "Totally Fucked" from Spring Awakening--This boy has been through it. He's cynical but still pushing through life. This song would really fit from 4th year on, when he starts to realize the world just seems stacked against him, out to kill him.
Hermione Granger: "Everything Else" from Next to Normal--She puts a lot of pressure on herself, and all she wants to do is put her head down and succeed. She's a little bitter, but still hopeful, and she focuses on her studies and interests to keep her going. She's constantly stressed but she knows she had to keep pushing in order to achieve her goals. She studies and works as a coping mechanism, hoping that the world will be okay if she just works a little harder.
Ron Weasley: "Mister Cellophane" from Chicago--Oh, poor Ron. He feels so underestimated and overlooked. He's the youngest boy in the family, and he doesn't have the traits that make his brothers and Ginny stand out. He seems average in every way, especially in comparison to the fucking Boy Who Lived and the Smartest Witch of Her Age
Draco Malfoy: I have two songs and they're both from Heathers.
1. "Candy Store"-- Tell me this isn't Draco offering his hand to Harry. Just. Someone pleasseeeee draw Draco and Pansy and Blaise as the Heathers I need it stat please and thank you.
2. "Lifeboat"--This is Draco in 6th year, desperate and paranoid and terrified. This is him realizing what he's gotten into by being a Death Eater and being scared for his life. He's questioning everything he's been taught and wishing for it to be over.
Ginny Weasley: "Right Hand Man" from Something Rotten--This is Ginny proving that she's just as strong and helpful as any man. She's constantly had to prove her strength against her rowdy brothers, but when her husband (or wife if she's with Luna or Pansy bc that girl is gayyyyy if not bi) needs help, she'd be like "let me help you damn it!"
Luna Lovegood "Sonya Alone" from Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812--This is my dear, sweet Luna. She's sort of been quietly protecting and helping the Order during the war, never imposing but always there when needed. She's strong in the way most of the other characters aren't, in that she has a quiet fortitude that makes her in some ways more powerful. She has that in common with the character of Sonya, who does the right thing to help Natasha in this song. Luna is loyal, dedicated, and selfless, and this song reflects that.
Pansy Parkinson "Charming" from Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812--Just, this is Pansy. Helene is Pansy Parkinson, it's a fact. Manipulative, seductive, confident, and smart. It's just perfect for her character.
Thanks sm again for the question nonnie! This was so fun.
Send me an ask about Harry Potter, broadway/musicals, The West Wing, and/or Taylor Swift! Or just about life in general :).
Also, I have a playlist of my 99 most listened-to songs of the year so far. Pick a number 1--99 and send me an ask and I'll write you a fic based on it!

The complicated, complex web I've created! Buddy Morgan, in my Two Worlds Apart universe.
Eric and Buddy are just friends in my Two Worlds Apart universe. Fez and Buddy though...during the fallout with Laurie and right before Rhonda, Fez has a bi-awakening. He truly realizes (there have been inklings) he has feelings for Kelso, but Kelso rejects him. He's with Brooke, and he's not gay (he doesn't understand bisexuality, remember?). Given the time period, to me, there's no way in hell Kelso will go for it. To him, it'll undermine his masculinity, moreso than dancing in a dress with Jackie ever could. To an unacceptable level. Where he'll no longer be seen as hot stuff. And honestly, I've never seen Kelso as bi. To me, Fez pines for him, but Kelso simply likes to be admired. He's a selfish little turd, and that's all there is to it. Anyway, Fez has already had strong feelings for Rhonda for awhile, and Buddy finds Vic, so they go their separate ways. Romantically, anyway. Eric and Buddy, meanwhile, develop a wholly platonic friendship. They're two peas in a pod. Eric's not bi, and Buddy understands. Does Buddy have some lingering feelings? Kind of, but he has Vic now. And Vic's the best, even if he has some baggage. Two sons and an unaccepting, hostile ex-wife, mainly. They eventually adopt a daughter, Lily, and they're overwhelmingly happy. He's not going to ruin that source of unmeasurable bliss, especially since Eric won't respond well to it. The past is in the past. So be it. Buddy and the gang all work well together, though. Buddy's an advocacy lawyer (the good kind, not an evil divorce lawyer like Mitch). Eric's a history teacher in inner-city Chicago. Donna's a journalist of the awesome muckraking sort. Jackie's the host of her own morning show, Good Morning, Chicago, and uses that leverage to try to take the corrupting wind out of the windy city. Hyde owns two Grooves on both the north side and the south side, so he has the headquarters. And through his father, some worthwhile connections. In the late '80s/early '90s (I'm getting the details ironed out atm), they all start an after-school program on the south side (with Sam Easton, Pastor Dan's brother and the principal of Washington Middle School, where Eric works), called Off the Streets. The program ramps up following all the austerity, the ramped-up war on crime (and drugs, obviously), and welfare cuts in the '90s (*cough* Clinton *cough*). Jackie and Hyde (and WB) have the funds to keep it going, though. Oh, and they go grassroots. With people power, to help keep it all going.

Not a question but a mini rant. 1. WHY DIDNT THEY LET NATALIE DATE A WOMEN TORREY LITERALLY SUGGESTED IT. 2. It's funny because everyone goes on about Sarah and Ava or Sarah and Connor or whatever. She is not confident enough for that lmao she would probably just stumble over her words asking her crush for a pencil. Only time she has power is when she is angry as seen in some episodes
1. Because all the One Chicago shows genuinely do not care about gay people. They’re either killed or sent off. They do this to anyone even mildly coded as non-straight as well. Also the actor’s opinions seem to have miniscule weight to them.
2. Stumbling over words gays exist, and Sarah was my favorite character so probably not the person to argue against this. Especially as I was maybe one of the earliest/biggest proponents of bi Reese. Although to give a fully honest reason as to why I think she is the person most often matched up with people is because Sarah was one of the most under developed women in that show. She had a quiet personality, which members of the fandom who also have a shy/quiet personality might latch on to. She had very small bits of information about her past. She was “the smart/awkward one”, which many people in fandom’s often latch onto. Sarah also had the worst romantic interest in the show, as he was generally disliked while they were dating and was not a lead actor. She was also the youngest in the show and wasn’t a widow and didn’t have a child. Finally, she left so early and abruptly that her story was never fleshed out like it was with Maggie or April, who also were horribly underdeveloped and maligned by the One Chicago writers.
3. Angry Sarah is hot as hell and had she been better written I think the character had a lot of potential.
4. None of this was what you asked for, but I gave up on One Chicago years ago so I can’t really attest to what is currently happening. I think overall a lot of characters, Sarah and Natalie both included, would have had far more interesting storylines had they had different sexualities, or at least explored them on screen.

Jayla is an only child who grew up on the wealthy north side of Chicago. Her mom is a lawyer and her dad is travel agent ; both of their lifestyles combined gave Jayla a pretty problem-less childhood. So of course naturally money was never an issue for her family.
She was home schooled up until her spy prep high school years , so she’s always had social anxiety issues.
Definitely was spoiled , and was handed out a lot of things during her childhood and adolescence , but the older she got the more she wanted to earn and accomplish things for herself.
Jay’s parents always encouraged her that she could pursue whatever career she wanted; though she was never really had a clue what she wanted to do , she grew an interest in espionage to try something out of the norm ? ya know as to say not a “traditional” career.
- Personality
princess energy. again , sis comes from money and was still spoiled growing up , though she actually doesn’t come off as bougie.
can’t handle too much social interactions , but still personable as need be
she gets emotionally attached very easily ; once you’re her favorite she requires a lot of attention
as gorgeous as she is she’s never been in a romantic relationship sjakjs ; i mean there have definitely been attempts from guys , but she’s very picky and has high standards when it comes to a long-term partner so yeah
very protective of her mental and emotional heath ;; kinda sensitive too
kinda adventurous ? willing to try new things but she has her limits
used to be self-conscience about her skin and the way she looked , but her confidence grew as she got older.
pretty good at manipulation and using her looks to get her way.
- Misc.
loves , loves , loves reading
ambidextrous
nerd for disney/pixar
actually super good at math
strictly against using drugs , but will casually drink
kinda indecisive
good at cooking
has a huge social media following ,, but sucks at interacting in person
- WC

best friend(s)
roommate ships

february book round up
Tumblr media
13 books this month. (haha, half of what i read in january, but i knew i wasn’t going to duplicate that, no way.) a pretty mixed bag.
in praise of shadows - junichiro tanizaki ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ a really really interesting non fiction work on japanese versus western aesthetics, the use of shadows and light, darkness and exposure. talks about architecture, art, people, culture, theatre... i enjoyed this a lot.
beneath a scarlet sky - mark sullivan ⭐️⭐️⭐️ a good story, extremely badly told. it’s a novel of italy in wwii, following a young man who falls in love, guides jews to switzerland, becomes a spy... a lot happens. it’s heavily based the true story of pino lella’s life but man the author should have stuck to bare facts (even if there weren’t many) because his writing is... not good. not structurally, or narratively, or just his prose.
the fever king - victoria lee ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ this book gave me the always frustrating horror of showing kids being manipulated by adults and the kids don’t know it but you the reader do know it and it’s AGONY. queer teen scifi in a dystopian future where magic manifests as a sickness and those who overcome it develop powers. the world-building was really really interesting, the writing was tight, the characters were amazing. THEY’RE MY KIDS NOW. really looking forward to the sequel.
yellow crocus - laila benjamin ⭐️⭐️⭐️ another well meaning book, lovingly told, but badly told. a novel about an enslaved black wet nurse and her charge, the white daughter of her master, with whom she develops a deep motherly bond. the novel follows them from lisbeth’s (the child) birth to the birth of her own child.you can tell that a lot of research and care and love went into this book, and it didn’t skeeve me off in the usual ways that books about slavery written by non-black people usually do... but it just wasn’t very well written.
boystown 2 - marshall thornton ⭐️⭐️⭐️ second set of stories about a gay private eye solving mysteries in the 80s. in this instalment, nick juggles things with his sort-of-not-really boyfriend, gets complicated feelings about his ex-boyfriend, and has bunch of sex with a bunch of guys who aren’t either of those men. interesting mysteries once again, though one of them kinda ticked me off.
no two ways - chi yu rodriguez ⭐️⭐️⭐️ contemporary f/f romance about a bi girl who hooks up with a lesbian and starts falling for her pretty quickly... but then finds out she’s a huge biphobe. this was good...? but the leads had almost no chemistry, it took too long for jackie to get an attitude change, and when she did, she got off way too easily.
northanger abbey - jane austen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ fun stuff, very enjoyable. i really like how austen does humour, and there’s some good stuff in here about sexist microaggressions and the art of novels. and i really liked the hero.
proper english - k.j. charles ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ AHHHHHH. i really like k.j. charles, and i was SO EXCITED when i found out she’d dipped her toes into f/f romance. this was wonderful. a very satisfying mystery, the kind that gives all the right hints and clues and allows the reader to figure it out if they’re paying attention, but introduces just enough doubt that you’re not sure. and the characters! the romance! i loved these two women in their first appearance in ‘think of england’ I LOVED THEM EVEN MORE HERE. pat’s assertiveness, fen’s flirtiness... gah.
perfect rhythm - jae ⭐️⭐️⭐️ contemporary f/f/ romance with an ace protag. very cute, if a bit... idk wooden at times? in the writing, the way asexuality was talked about, some of the delivery of the jokes. it definitely wasn’t bad; the characters were complicated and flawed in real ways, and i feel like their romance progressed very naturally, and it was super fulfilling in the end. it just needed a little something more, writing-wise. also, did not enjoy the way it treated the closeted side character. :/
the gentleman and the rogue - bonnie dee & summer devon ⭐️⭐️ this book made me realise... i don’t think i’ve ever read a fiction book written by two authors that i thoroughly enjoyed? i just don’t gel with most people’s approaches to co-writing. not that that was the only thing wrong with this book. historical m/m romance between a veteran lord and the guttersnipe he hires as his new valet. i don’t like rich/poor romance where the rich person doesn’t buy a clue, i don’t like structural inequality played straight, i don’t like plots that are so thin it seems like the author didn’t want to write one. and the writing itself left much to be desired.
scrap metal - harper fox ⭐️⭐️⭐️ really sweet contemporary m/m romance set on a small scottish island, between a phd student who has suddenly been called back to work on the farm he grew up on, and the mysterious man who shows up on the farm in the middle of the night. i really like harper fox’s writing; she can sometimes have the loveliest way with words. and the romance was super well done. my nitpicks with this book are kinda silly but i had them all the same. it hit some squicks of mine and also i really don’t like when harper fox slips in the paranormal as a side-element int he books. why? i don’t know! but i don’t like it.
switchback - s.w. andersen ⭐️⭐️ i only got this audiobook because i really like nicol zanzarella, the narrator. and i mean it’s lesbian romance featuring a mountain bike rider and a chiropractor? neat right? wrong, it was boring and badly written. alas! man i hate omniscient pov, especially for romance.
mama black widow - iceberg slim ⭐️⭐️⭐️ semi-biographical novel of a black drag queen living in the ghettos of 1960s chicago. follows him from childhood to his prime to his decline, with a heavy focus on his childhood and relationship with his mother and the many tragedies that befell him and this family. heavy focus on race, sexuality, and violence. (don’t go into this without hella warnings.) i enjoyed it, mostly, though i felt that doylist misogyny coming through hard. it was written in the 1960s and it shows lol.
and that’s it for february. i started a new job today and probably won’t have a lot of reading time, but i’ll continue to do as much audiobooking as i can on public transportation. currently doing a reread of the hobbit, which i 100% started as a self comfort thing, and will probably be ready very sparsely throughout the month. going to start a hundred little lies.

Best of the Bi-Month
The Hostage by Susan Wiggs (2000): In the chaos of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, backwoods trader Tom Silver kidnaps heiress Deborah Sinclair, hoping to make her industrialist father compensate the victims of his greed and negligence. Nothing goes according to plan, however, and these two people who should be enemies become anything but. I absolutely loved this book; the combination of slow-burn romance and action-packed non-romantic plot was perfect, and Deborah’s arc is just beautiful.
Worst of the Bi-Month
Bledding Sorrow by Marilyn Harris (1976): The cash-strapped heir of an ancient Yorkshire estate, his improperly medicated American wife, and a working-class coach driver are forced to reenact a Tudor-era tragedy, because of...reasons, I guess. I wasn’t too disappointed when I realized that this was Gothic horror instead of Gothic romance--I like scary stories, too--but this isn’t so much a novel as a long parade of pointlessly dismaying incidents. The characters are generally powerless to avoid their fates and, what’s more, they don’t have the opportunity or inclination to struggle very hard. Their helplessness might work if there were a compelling explanation for it, but Harris only makes a few vague suggestions (i.e., “Reincarnation?” or “House evil?”). Also, one of the supporting characters is such an egregiously offensive gay stereotype that he would probably make Jack Chick exclaim, “Whoa, tone it down!” The style was decent, though, and I had a few good laughs along the way.
Rest of the Bi-Month
I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara (2018): In this posthumously published true-crime book, McNamara details a series of burglaries, rapes, and murders that plagued Sacramento and Southern California during the 1970s-1980s, believed by her and many others to be the work of one man, dubbed the Golden State Killer. McNamara does a wonderful job capturing the strange false tranquility of Californian suburbia circa 1980, and she presents the (often convoluted) facts clearly but never salaciously. The good taste and empathy of her style kind of undercuts any passages along the lines of “perhaps researching serial killers is deeply unsavory,” but that was my only issue with the book.
The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness (2009): In the first sequel to The Knife of Never Letting Go, young Todd Hewitt, having left behind the world he knew forever, deals with increasingly morally complex and traumatic situations. Meanwhile, his new friend, [redacted], wrestles with similarly thorny and upsetting issues. This is a worthy sequel to one of my favorite books I read this year. I missed the road narrative of the first installment, but the complicated ethical dilemmas and the ever-switching power dynamics very nearly made up for its loss.
Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness (2010): In the final book of Ness’s trilogy, [redacted]. This was the weakest installment, but only because of some fairly minor structural issues, such as some initial narrative choppiness, that I probably wouldn’t have noticed if the first two books hadn’t been so well-structured as well as thematically fascinating. The payoff is pretty fantastic, in any event. Also, Todd’s whole...thing with the Mayor is one of the most gloriously weird, fascinating relationships I’ve seen in a YA novel.
Someone to Trust by Mary Balogh (2018): In Regency England, twenty-six-year-old Lord Hodges decides to do the proper thing and get himself wed; however, his narcissistic mother, not content with the significant emotional damage she’s dealt him over the years, keeps interfering with his search because she’s worried he’ll marry someone who’s not hot enough by her standards. Meanwhile, his thirty-five-year-old BFF, Lady Overfield, has resolved to accept the suit of a staid but pleasant acquaintance...but something just doesn’t feel right. You know what does feel right, though? Waltzing and talking about deep shit with Lord Hodges...and the feeling is mutual!!! This isn’t the most action-packed romance, but it’s super-cute and I was 1000% sold on Lady Overfield’s subtle awesomeness.
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (2012): Unhappily married and resignedly living in his Missouri hometown, Nick Dunne suddenly finds himself as the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance and apparent murder. What the fuck is going on? I spent like five years of my life debating with myself whether to read this book, and I’m glad I did (long after its relevancy had peaked, of course). It’s easily the weakest of Flynn’s three novels--its sense of place isn’t as strong as Sharp Objects or Dark Places, although I understand that’s somewhat intentional, and neither main character works as a representation of an actual person--but it’s a propulsive read and it’s pretty damn funny.
The Diamond Slipper by Jane Feather (1997): Lady Cordelia Brandenburg travels with her BFF, a teenage Marie Antoinette, so they can get hitched to the Austrian ambassador to France and the Dauphin, respectively. Two problems: Cordelia’s new husband is a fucking monster, and she’s fallen in love with the grieving brother of the husband’s mysteriously dead first wife. This novel probably isn’t to everyone’s taste; it kind of zigzags between a semi-cutesy fairy-tale feel and depictions of horrific abuse, and the effect is somewhat jarring. I enjoyed its use of historical details, though, and I liked the heroine a lot.
Beware, Princess Elizabeth by Carolyn Meyer (2002): In this historical YA novel, Elizabeth I narrates several incidents in her life from cradle to throne, focusing on all the times that her half-sister Mary came super-close to having her executed. Although I found the structure of the novel somewhat choppy, I really liked the portrayal of Elizabeth’s complicated relationships with her pious, increasingly suspicious half-siblings, plus the plot had plenty of action.
Doomed Queen Anne by Carolyn Meyer (2001): In another installment of Meyer’s Young Royals series, Anne Boleyn explains her journey from awkward child to unconventional, controversial courtier to VICTIM OF TOTAL RAILROADING. This novel was even choppier than Beware, Princess Elizabeth, mostly because Elizabeth’s story is better-suited to the episodic plot structure, but I have to say I love this portrayal of Anne Boleyn as much as (if not more than) I did at twelve. Her motivations aren’t high-minded or altruistic, but she’s got feelings, damn it, and she has a right to fight against being treated like shit! Also, Meyer gives her a sixth finger on one hand, which was probably not the case historically, but it’s cool that Anne is portrayed sympathetically while also having a body that’s stigmatized by society.
Trapped at the Altar by Jane Feather (2014): In the early 1680s, Catholic Lady Ariadne Daunt and Protestant Sir Ivor Chalfont live in Daunt Valley, a makeshift community of loosely related lawless aristocrats who lost their lands in the English Civil War. Ariadne and Ivor are force to wed by the community “elders,” who hope to send them to the royal court as a religiously flexible power couple. This already-tense situation is made more awkward by the fact that Ariadne is in love with another man, while Ivor is in love with Ariadne. This novel is part of a small subset of romances that would be better as historical fiction. I loved the unique (albeit nightmarish) setting of Daunt Valley, the exciting journey to London, and the well-portrayed court intrigue. I even quite liked Ariadne. However, Ivor was such a shit. Ariadne is upfront with him about her love for another, but, because Ivor “loves” her, he acts like she’s morally obligated to go along with the whole thing. He never really forgives her for not being a virgin on their wedding night, and his reaction when he finds out she’s been using birth control is bloodcurdling. Also, Feather throws away an interesting dynamic where Ariadne has genuine feelings for two complex men in favor of making Ivor’s rival a creepy stalker (but also an embarrassingly ineffectual sissy).
Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George (2008): A  nameless Norwegian girl who can talk to animals agrees to live with an enchanted polar bear for one year in exchange for her family’s deliverance from poverty, secretly hoping to find the answer to her beloved brother’s sadness as well. She finds herself way in over her head, though, with a curse that goes back centuries or longer. I enjoyed this retelling of “East of the Sun, West of the Moon,” and I thought a lot of the concepts were really clever (hint: this is neither the first girl nor the first polar bear). In execution, though, I didn’t like it as much as Edith Pattou’s retelling, East, which has a stronger sense of place and better-developed minor characters.
Storm by Donna Jo Napoli (2014): Sebah, a sixteen-year-old Canaanite girl, loses her home, her family, and her entire way of life in a sudden deluge that drowns the whole world...almost. After weeks of surviving in trees and on rafts, she manages to stow away on Noah’s Ark, where she rooms with some bonobos and learns way too much about Ham’s marital problems. I thought this was a very creative book with some delightfully weird earthiness, but it becomes somewhat static once Sebah boards the ark and meets a character who kills too much of the tension.
At the Queen’s Summons by Susan Wiggs (2009 update of 1995 original): Pippa, a street performer in Elizabethan England, claims the patronage of Aidan O Donoghue, a minor Irish king, in order to save herself from arrest. Aidan, a goodhearted fellow, goes along with it. This was a pleasant story, but I can remember almost nothing about it. I love Susan Wiggs, but her Tudor Rose trilogy is kind of a snore.

vol. 2 (early preview)
Tumblr media
The first of three films, JEEN-YUHS is essentially a Kanye West home movie and it’s nostalgic and dreamy and narratively complex for being a work of nonfiction. The film is most effective in that it doesn’t pander to its audience or to the subject, because in JEEN-YUHS nothing about Kanye’s pre-fame years is up for interpretation. Everything is out on the table, face up, for the world to see and it’s incredible to watch for any Kanye West completionists.
JEEN-YUHS: Part 1 is Dorothy Gale of Kansas pulling back the curtain to reveal the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz is nothing more than a man, a mortal.
JEEN-YUHS feels a lot like that, and gave me honestly all the clarification I needed on ‘The Man behind The Man’ or ‘the guy behind the guy,’ because really, to know one’s future you must know your past for a complete picture and JEEN-YUHS is comprehensive.
This is Kanye in full focus, no photoshop. Stripped nude and bare, and whether you love him or hate him, it all tracks and it's a lot of fun to watch. (Kanye buying a porn magazine is hilarious and makes sense with what we know about him now). JEEN-YUHS is the missing piece of the puzzle.
Fast-forward, It’s the year 2022 and multi-hyphenate, billionaire lothario, Kanye West, is divorced (in the process, but not yet. from reality television star and law school graduate, Kim Kardashian, who he currently shares 4 small children with (North, Chicago, Saint, and Psalm).
For work, Mr. West collects handsome paychecks from not one, but two lucrative multiyear corporate merchandising deals with Adidas and Gap, as well as income from his other independent musical/merch endeavors– he’s practically printing cash.
Kanye West is a literal human ATM machine who as of late has been linked to Instagram personality and actress of Uncut Gems fame, Julia Fox, who he claims to be his new muse (but rumored by many as a PR revenge stunt to get back his now ex-wife and her relationship with SNL cast member and scum-bro-cover-boy, Pete Davidson).
In another strange development, Kanye also bought a house (literally) across the street from Kim, which feels a bit disconcerting and a little OJ =which is a bit on the nose if you ask me.
But based on the narrative Instagram suggests, Fox is his new muse and girlfriend– one he dresses up in the newest Balenciaga and takes on dates to fancy dinners at famous New York restaurants and introduces to friends like Dave Chappelle and Marilyn Manson and Madonna, (real networking opportunities) and per most recent gossip columns–Fox was Kanye’s official date to this year’s New York Fashion Week. Fox reports about her and Kanye’s ever evolving relationship, bi-weekly, for Interview Magazine in a segment (cheekily) titled: Fox News.
Their relationship continues to puzzle the citizens of the internet to this day. (Also, Kanye appears to want to really beat up Pete Davidson, like really bad).
Quickly, for time-reasons, some other noteworthy achievements are that he: ran unsuccessfully for president and voted for himself; and gave his life over to God and scripture, and has become a self-proclaimed, self-righteous, self-absorbed weapon for Christ, born again, I guess, to like, also sell $80 sweatshirts. (I don’t know).
There’s so much about “Kanye West”–or “Yeezy” or just “Kanye” without the “West” or “YEEZUS” which was during the time when he actually thought he was a god or now, most recently, just “Ye” but now it’s like “ye” but all lowercase because that’s how much he loves typography, I guess. He’s an anomaly and we can’t fully comprehend his antics really, because how could you?
He’s all over the place; he’s such a Gemini, and we think we know, but we have no idea, which is a line I stole from MTV’s Diary (MTV is featured heavily in the film). So whether you’re a Day-One Stan, the occupational onlooker, some gossipy bottom feeder, or an amalgamation of the three–or practically any other niche “Kanye West” online forum subculture–we all have our assumptions about who we think the “real” Kanye West is but trying to understand Kanye West is like trying to quantify the unquantifiable. That is until now.
JEEN-YUHS recontextualizes West through the intimate nuances of his larger-than-life personality and the events leading up to his superstardom.
The film breezily peels back the thick, leathery Balenciaga layers of arguably one of the most talked about artists of all time–but what makes JEEN-YUHS so special, and lightyears ahead of any other modern music documentary, is that the subject, in this instance Kanye, doesn’t have final cut. So obviously concerned, Kanye aired out his grievances on his Instagram:
“I’m going to say this kindly for the last time. (sic) I must get final edit and approval on this doc before it releases on Netflix. (sic) Open the edit room immediately so I can be in charge of my own image. Thank you in advance (rosy-cheek smiley face emoji)”
Thankfully, that didn’t happen, because JEEN-YUHS is raw and unfiltered and unfettered and untouched by Kanye which is why the first film succeeds. It's USDA ‘Grade-A’ certified high-quality top sirloin, it’s juicy and gritty and with no hormones. Which is an enthusiastic way of me saying that it's cinematic in this Y2K-era MTV reality show but produced by Stan Lathan and Russell Simmons sort of way. Sincerely, I watched much of the film’s runtime, eyes wide open and sometimes forgetting it was archival footage and not a biopic of Kanye reenacting his rise to fame.
JEEN-YUHS is like staring into a magic mirror and is engrossing from front to back just like The College Dropout (an album that has yet to have been released during the events of the film). Shot primarily during Kanye’s younger years, in 2002 to be exact, and almost 20 years ago–Kanye West was out there hustling to get signed; a visibly bright and impassioned young man with an undeniable gift for production but who dreamed of becoming a platinum selling rap star.
The footage in JEEN-YUHS is incredible and you feel like you’ve stumbled upon never-before-seen footage from the Disney Vault or something. One of my favorite scenes from the doc involves Kanye sitting in the driver's seat of a car next to Talib Kweli while Mos Def stands just outside the passenger window, vibing to the music. Kanye, playing one of his tracks forgets to take out his retainer (because Kanye once wore dental braces) and pulls it out with a slobbery slurp in front of Black Star, and on camera. It’s awkward, but so brutally honest that it’s endearing.
The Kanye West depicted in JEEN-YUHS, the ‘2002 Kanye West’ is a lovable dweeb (like an Aziz Ansari character), an affable outsider struggling to make it into  Roc-A-Fella Records, who–Dame Dash included and Jay Z excluded–obviously don’t (and secretly do) see Kanye’s vision of the future.
But ‘2002 Kanye’ is Steve Urkel meets Roger from Sister, Sister; he's dorky, but charming and he’s got skills, and he’s trying to land a record deal. Even if he was unsure of his place in the hip hop zeitgeist, Kanye knew was a unique talent even back in 2002, when he first blurred the lines between conscious and mainstream rap lyricism by crafting a style and sound that for the time was unheard of.
JEEN-YUHS highlights this point with some of the most unguarded and tender footage of Kanye West you'll ever see. But what the film makes blatantly clear is that Kanye differs from everyone else because he puts himself out there, relentlessly and undeterred, regardless of the outcome, because deep down, he knows he’s the dopest person alive. Even back then, Kanye knew he was a “JEEN-YUHS” and he was waiting for everyone else to catch up; bold and truly unafraid. Sometimes in the film, Kanye’s eyes go dark and void of life like a great white shark, which is eerie.
There’s a line in the documentary where the co-director and narrator describes (and I’m paraphrasing) that in order for Kanye to succeed in the music industry, and secure a deal, he would either be offered one or he’d force his way into one somehow, but failure was never an option. Ever.
If anything, by JEEN-YUHS’ account, Kanye failed upwards and onwards–but I wonder if having the cameras rolling 24/7, for nearly two decades, aided at all in Kanye’s ultimate success? Hear me out, but I believe that the subtle but consistent act of recording one’s life and actions and feelings with the sole purpose of reaching an intended goal, the chances of it happening, especially in Kanye West’s case, are highly probable (because it's basically, if you think about, long-term self-affirmations, which are proven to help people reach their goals and get what they want).
If you say something enough times, you start to believe it, and if you have friends who follow you around and tape your every move–or awkward moment trying to get Jay Z to acknowledge you or when you staged an impromptu performance of an early demo of “Through the Wire” unsolicited in the Roc-A-Fella Records New York offices wearing a Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow” movie merch tee, and to minimal fanfare–filming everything you say and do, every thought and opinion, can groom a person’s mind and their sense of importance. Kanye altered the threshold of his own brand of success by changing the rules of the game.
And I’m sure at the time it felt like “The Kanye West Show” in his head, but at the time there was no real way of knowing if it was ever going to work out and what makes JEEN-YUHS so incredible is how even when it feels like his chances are hopeless, even though you know that the ultimate outcome is his success but you’re still straddling the edge of your seat hoping someone takes a shot on him.
In a memorable scene from the film’s climax—Kanye meanders through Times Square, wearing a t-shirt from Blade Runner and buys a porno mag from a sidewalk stall for 8 dollars, which he initially scoffs at for being expensive just before deviously claiming it (porn) a secret addiction of his. JEEN-YUHS is all about the context and clarification it provides.
As a way to shamelessly quote Kanye, part one of JEEN-YUHS is “that old Kanye, chop up the soul Kanye,” but in the grand scheme of things is nothing Earth-shattering, but all-around fun to watch. It’s not like I discovered any new things about Kanye that I didn’t already know, it's just now I have the verbal and visual confirmation of what I already assumed. That he worked tirelessly in the single-minded pursuit of bringing his unique cinematic vision that was ‘his life’ to the world. That he adored his mother and she adored him; and that he was (or still is) a pervert (all truth, no shade; “a fisherman always spots another fisherman” and all that).
I’ll leave you with this, JEEN-YUHS is basically a remake of Revenge of the Nerds starring Kanye, a super-nerd who based on current day events got revenge on any/every single person who ever wrote him off, by (quite frankly) spazzing his way to the top of the charts and ultimately our hearts. Like I said, it's oddly endearing like watching one of your buddies make it.
