How English Became an International Language?
English is everywhere! It’s the main language of business, science, flying planes, pop music, and more. Over 1.5 billion people speak it, but only about 400 million speak it as their first language. So how did a language from a small island become so popular around the world?
Let’s look at the important moments in history that helped English grow and spread.
1. Where English Came From
English started around the 5th century when three groups—Angles, Saxons, and Jutes—came from Europe to what is now England. The word “English” actually comes from the Angles.
Later, other groups added words to English:
Romans brought Latin through religion and education.
Vikings brought words like “sky,” “egg,” and “window.”
French added many words after they took over England in 1066.
Because of all this, English has a mix of words from many places. By the time of Shakespeare, modern English was ready to go global.
2. The British Empire: Spreading English Around the World
From the 1600s to the 1900s, the British Empire ruled many countries. In these places, English was used in schools, government, and business.
Some countries where English spread include:
India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka
Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa
Australia and New Zealand
Jamaica and other Caribbean islands
Even after these countries became independent, many kept using English because it was already part of their systems.
3. The United States: English in Movies, Music, and Brands
After World War II, the United States became a superpower. English spread through:
Hollywood movies
Pop music
Famous brands like McDonald’s and Coca-Cola
Technology companies like Microsoft, Apple, and Google
The U.S. also helped create big global groups like the United Nations, and English became the main language there too.
4. English in Schools and Science
English is now the main language in many international organizations, like the UN and the Olympics.
In science and education:
Most research papers are written in English.
Universities around the world offer classes in English.
Global events and conferences use English.
To do well in school or science careers, learning English is often a must.
5. The Internet: English Online and in Tech
The internet started in the U.S., so early websites were mostly in English. Today:
Most programming languages use English words.
Online tutorials, videos, and help forums are usually in English.
Websites like YouTube and online courses often use English.
Even as more websites use other languages, English is still the main one for technology.
6. Learning English for a Better Future
In over 100 countries, kids learn English in school. In places like India and Nigeria, English is an official language. In others, it helps people find good jobs, travel, or study abroad.
Many students take English tests like IELTS and TOEFL to study in other countries.
Different types of English are also developing, like “Singlish” in Singapore or “Indian English.” These are called “World Englishes.”
7. Will English Always Be the #1 Language?
Other big languages are also growing:
Chinese (Mandarin) has the most native speakers.
Spanish is growing fast, especially in the U.S.
Hindi, Arabic, and French are also widely spoken.
But English is often used as a neutral or shared language between people from different countries. A simple form of English, called “Globish,” is often used in business.
In the future, we might speak many languages, but English will still be one of the most useful.
Final Thoughts
English didn’t become a global language by accident. It spread because of empires, movies, music, science, and the internet. It keeps changing and growing as more people use it around the world.
Whether you speak it as your first language or are learning it as a second one, English is a powerful tool that connects people everywhere.

Nelly Cheboi, who creates computer labs for Kenyan schoolchildren, is CNN's Hero of the Year
Tumblr media
CNN  —  Nelly Cheboi, who in 2019 quit a lucrative software engineering job in Chicago to create computer labs for Kenyan schoolchildren, is the 2022 CNN Hero of the Year. Online voters selected her from among this year’s Top 10 CNN Heroes. Cheboi’s nonprofit, TechLit Africa, has provided thousands of students across rural Kenya with access to donated, upcycled computers — and the chance at a brighter future. Cheboi accepted the award with her mother, who she said “worked really hard to educate us.” At the beginning of her acceptance speech, Cheboi and her mother sang a song onstage that she explained had a special meaning when she was growing up. As CNN Hero of the Year, Cheboi will receive $100,000 to expand her work. She and the other top 10 CNN Heroes honored at Sunday’s gala all receive a $10,000 cash award and, for the first time, additional grants, organizational training and support from The Elevate Prize Foundation through a new collaboration with CNN Heroes. Nelly will also be named an Elevate Prize winner, which comes with a $300,000 grant and additional support worth $200,000 for her nonprofit. Cheboi grew up in poverty in Mogotio, a rural township in Kenya. “I know the pain of poverty,” said Cheboi, 29. “I never forgot what it was like with my stomach churning because of hunger at night.” A hard-working student, Cheboi received a full scholarship to Augustana College in Illinois in 2012. She began her studies there with almost no experience with computers, handwriting papers and struggling to transcribe them onto a laptop. Everything changed in her junior year, though, when Cheboi took a programming course required for her mathematics major. “When I discovered computer science, I just fell in love with it. I knew that this is something that I wanted to do as my career, and also bring it to my community,” she told CNN. Many basic computer skills were still a steep learning curve, however. Cheboi remembers having to practice touch-typing for six months before she could pass a coding interview. Touch-typing is a skill that is now a core part of the TechLit curriculum. “I feel so accomplished seeing kids that are 7 years old touch-typing, knowing that I just learned how to touch-type less than five years ago,” she said. Once she had begun working in the software industry, Cheboi soon realized the extent of which computers were being thrown away as companies upgraded their technology infrastructure. “We have kids here (in Kenya) — myself included, back in the day — who don’t even know what a computer is,” she said. So, in 2018, she began transporting donated computers back to Kenya — in her personal luggage, handling customs fees and taxes herself. “At one point, I was bringing 44 computers, and I paid more for the luggage than I did for the air ticket,” she said. A year later, she co-founded TechLit Africa with a fellow software engineer after both quit their jobs. The nonprofit accepts computer donations from companies, universities and individuals. The hardware is wiped and refurbished before it’s shipped to Kenya. There, it’s distributed to partner schools in rural communities, where students ages 4 to 12 receive daily classes and frequent opportunities to learn from professionals, gaining skills that will help improve their education and better prepare them for future jobs. “We have people who own a specific skill coming in and are just inspiring the kids (with) music production, video production, coding, personal branding,” Cheboi said. “They can go from doing a remote class with NASA on education to music production.” The organization currently serves 10 schools; within the next year, Cheboi hopes to be partnered with 100 more. “My hope is that when the first TechLit kids graduate high school, they’re able to get a job online because they will know how to code, they will know how to do graphic design, they will know how to do marketing,” Cheboi said. “The world is your oyster when you are educated. By bringing the resources, by bringing these skills, we are opening up the world to them.” Read the full article

The Hate U Give (2018) dir. George Tillman Jr. 7.6/10
Amandla’s acting is so good. Her smile and laughter is also very cute and she’s so naturally pretty.
This was a good visualization of what (could) happen(s). I didn’t feel any cringe and just felt real.
The concept of non threatening black people being okay is prevalent in life.
Look at Tumblr making an appearance.
It was good to see Starr’s family be so healthy with one another.
Spoiler: [About Maverick and his wife teaching his kids what to do if a cop pulls them over. He ensures that they don’t touch anything they drop, put their hands on the dashboard, and so on. It also involves the 10 point program. His daughter, Starr, is now 16 and she lives in Garden Heights, but transferred to Williamson Prep after the death of her friend, Natasha. She has two brothers–Seven and Sekani. Maverick owns a store where everyone comes to gossip. He used to work for King, a drug lord and Seven’s other dad. Starr goes to her prep school, where she has her white boyfriend, Chris, and her best friends, Hailey and Maya. Her life here is different than the one in Garden Heights since she aims to not seem hood. She can see how people judge her and her boyfriend for dating. She goes to a party one night in Garden Heights with Seven’s half sister, Kenya. Starr sees Khalil, her childhood best friend, who is attractive to her. They talk and when shots are fired at the party, they run and he drives her away. They stop to talk and he kisses her, but she tells him that she has a boyfriend. They later get pulled over by a cop. Starr immediately puts her hands on the dash and wants Khalil to do the same and cooperate. When he starts questioning the officer, he gets brought out of the car. When she starts recording a video on her phone, the cop makes her stop. When the cop goes to his car to run the license, Khalil reaches in to the car to get his hairbrush. The cops believes it’s a weapon and shoots and kills him. Starr is brought in for questioning and she mentions the officer’s badge number and about everything that happened. When she gets questioned about Khalil doing drugs, her cop uncle, Carlos, comes and saves her. Her family visits Khalil’s place and talk with his mom. Carlos mentions an investigation with the officer and Maverick argues with him. Starr goes back to school and while playing basketball with her friends, she confronts Hailey on a racist thing she said, but calms down after Hailey justifies it. The killing becomes sensational news and they mention a witness coming to testify in front of the jury. Kenya tells Starr that she knows it’s her and wants her to step up to testify. They get picked up by King, who drops them off at Maverick’s store. King tells Maverick that it’s better for her not to testify. At the funeral, April Ofrah, a civil rights lawyer, comes to talk about what happened and she later leads peaceful protesting. Starr’s parents argue about what’s best for her. Starr reblogs a post about the wrongful death of black people on Tumblr and Hailey unfollows her. Starr talks with April and discuss what happened and what happens next. She brings up the story of Natasha’s death from a driveby shooting and how she never brought up how a king lord, who is now dead, did it. She decides she wants to testify for Khalil now. At school, everyone ditches class because of the protesting and Starr gets upset since they’re using it as an excuse and don’t really care. She has Carlos pick her up and she testifies anonymously. She does an interview and ends up mentioning the King Lords. During a dinner outing with her family, Starr sees King and his crew come up. Maverick fights one of them when they talk about Starr being stupid for what she did. Cops come and the Kings leave. Maverick gets searched and since his wallet is inside, his family brings it out and Starr starts recording. When they try to stop her, she explains that it’s her right. At home, Maverick makes them say the ten point program. When she’s hanging out with Maya and Hailey, they start watching the news and Hailey talks about how the officer deserves to be treated better. Starr confronts her and even brings up the Tumblr unfollowing. Hailey says she just doesn’t know Starr anymore. Starr goes to prom and Chris talks to her about how she’s the witness. She talks with him about how she’s living two different lives. She talks about her relationship with Khalil and when Chris mentions that he doesn’t see color, she tries to convince him to see her
blackness. He brings her home and meets Maverick, who doesn’t really approve. A driveby shooting happens at their house and the family is brought to Carlos’s place. Seven and Maverick leave them behind to defend their home and confront King. Starr talks with Carlos about his mentality as a cop and confirms that it’s racist. She goes to testify in front of the jury. She later sees Hailey and when Starr mentions her being racist, she denies it. Starr brings up specific examples and when Hailey mentions that Starr is different because she’s non threatening and that Khalil was a drug dealer and deserved it, Starr threatens and scares Hailey. She breaks down in Chris’s car. They go home and discover that King had hurt Seven and is looking for Starr. Seven’s mom, Iesha, makes them leave and distracts King later. They drive away and see protesting happening. They learn that the jury decided not to indict the officer. Starr has Chris help by taking her brothers home. She then joins the protest and speaks through a loudspeaker about her experience. Riots break out and Starr manages to go with Seven to Maverick’s store to get milk for the tear gas. King and his men end up throwing in a Molotov, entrapping the kids in fire. Some neighbors try to help them and Maverick gets them out. King and Maverick confront each other until Sekani draws a gun on King. The cops arrive and Starr raises her hands in front of Sekani and talks to the cops. They lower their guns and so does Sekani. King gets arrested later after the community reveals everything on what he did. Starr visits Khalil’s home and keeps his memory alive.]

I saw your tags about study abroad and now I need awful(or amazing) omgcp study abroad aus(I'm also that awful study abroad kid whoops)
CHECK PLEASE CHARACTERS AS STUDY ABROAD PEOPLE
Lardo, the only canon one to have studied abroad: Obviously super chill about it. Will talk about Kenya if asked, but isn’t going to be dramatic about it. Took some awesome photos. Actually gets them printed and framed.
Bitty: Went to France for a 2 week program that probably shouldn’t even count. “Lord, y’all, they use so much butter it puts me to shame.” Tried to speak French but nobody could understand his accent. Cried at the Louvre because he was overwhelmed. Put up an eight paragraph facebook post about how he was deeply personally affected by the burning of Notre Dame with a picture of himself looking cute in front of it.
Jack: Spent a semester in London studying WWII history. Went to the Churchill museum so much for research that he knew the guards by name. Developed a surprising tolerance for intensely spicy curry, and an even more shocking boredom with fish and chips, the chicken nuggets of England. When asked about studying abroad, he says “I’m Canadian, Massachusetts is abroad.”
Shitty: Spent a summer as an intern in Parliament. Cried with happiness when his time there overlapped with Jack’s. Still regrets not throwing any milkshakes. Only brings it up when and if Brexit is finally over.
Dex: Samwell has a “study abroad” in San Francisco for tech people to get internships, like how my school had a “study abroad” in LA for film majors to get internships. “Thank fuck for my scholarship covering rent,” he texts Chowder. “Go to this restaurant and order that,” Chowder texts back.
Nursey: Was already fluent in Spanish, goes to Madrid for a year and comes back with a lisping accent that all the Mexican kids make fun of him for. Wears a Universidad Complutense de Madrid hoodie for a month when he gets back. Posts amazing instagrams from a trip to La Sagrada Familia and Barcelona. Did accidentally eat too many weed brownies in Barcelona and forgot where his hostel was.
Chowder: Spent a semester in the Dominican Republic. Rarely texted his friends, except to send a picture of a giant spider in his bathtub and a few follow-up texts praising his host mom for crushing the giant spider for him. Comes back without much of a tan but as best friends with the people in his program. Tries to get the friend groups to interact. Fails to get the friend groups to interact.
Holster: Studied in some random-ass place like Amsterdam. Definitely took a picture at the Fault in Our Stars Bench. Sent all his family and friends some bizarre souvenirs from the airport after spending a semester not buying them anything. “Here is… a tulip-shaped mug. And a wooden-shoe-shaped mug.” Talks about how we should really bike more in the states for three months.
Ransom: Spent a summer in Japan. Constant instagram stories about the novelty snacks he ate, the #struggle of being too tall for everything, the interesting vending machines, everything. Does not take any actual pictures, but does end up with a story highlight on his instagram that is 1,348 pictures and videos long. Comes home with some J-beauty and K-beauty mascaras for his sisters, who are delighted, and some snacks for Holster, who is even more delighted.
Ford: Went to Australia! Took about 500 pictures with a koala. Joked that her mail could be sent to 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney. Someone on the team missed the joke and spent a lot of shipping money in vain. Is no longer afraid of the small spiders of the US.
Whiskey: Did he study abroad? Or was he just gone for a semester? Who can know?
Tango: Went to study in Italy because that’s what his mom did. All of the Italians hear his accent when he says something like “Buongiorno, un piccolo gelato con ananas e mango– “ and they immediately respond in English. His accent isn’t even that bad, they’re just used to Americans not understanding anything. Only did a summer program because he was worried about messing up his class plans and hockey. By the end of the program he has three favorite gelato places and dreams of opening up a place in the US that makes good pineapple and mango gelato. Will never understand the Naples dialect.

Pioneers in Christian Counseling
Tumblr media
Gladys K. Mwiti, M. A., a counseling psychologist, is the Founder and Execute have Director of Oasis Counseling and Training Institute in Nairobi, Kenya. In addition to her work at Oasis, Gladys is the Chairman in the Christian Counselors Association of Kenya. Her husband, Gershon, is the national team leader of African Company, an indigenous African counseling ministry. Gladys and Gershon have three daughters and one son. At the 1997 AACC World Conference in November, I spent some time with Gladys, talking about her pioneer work through Kenya. Tell me about yourself, your background, and how you encountered God. I was born in Meru District in Kenya, which is near the snow-capped, northern slopes of Mt. Kenya. Its quite a cold vicinity indeed. I grew up in a Christian home. My mother loves the Lord. She has always been a woman of prayer, and Id love to be like her. She used to take me to church and to huge conventions. With Africa, we have the huge, evangelistic meetings, people sitting on the green grass under the sun. That's the types of setting where I receive the Lord as my Savior. We were at a 3, 000-strong convention and also the gospel was preached from John 3: 16. I remember that the preacher said, It is not so much the sin you have committed in your life; it's that the Lord loves you so , so much, and what he is asking you can be, Could you love me a little bit in return? As a seven year old, I did not see my sin consequently a bad thing. I knew I was guilty of licking the cream off the top of the milk as soon as my mom was not looking or taking and eating bread from the cupboard. What I really saw on myself that day was a heart that was desired and longed to know the love of Goodness. I probably should mention that my father used to be a Christian. He brought my mother to the Head of the family before they got married. She had never been to church, so when they met, my father took the woman's to church, and she accepted the Lord as her Savior in the East African Revival of the missed 1940's - 1950's that transformed most of the church is in Kenya to evangelical church is. Mom arrived at know the Lord in that revival, but then Dad backslid. He left Christianity he got richer, he grew to be a businessman, a farmer, and its as if he did not need much from the Lord. He even wedded a second wife, and there was a lot of tension and stress at home. Sometimes as a child I wished there would be more peace in my home. Dad would drink alcohol, come home sometimes, and rough up my mother. I actually longed for fatherly love, a father I could trust. There was so much insecurity with my dad, that when Document heard the preacher talking about a God who loved me, I longed for that security. I was aware that if this God was the God of my mother, I could rely on him as a father. In the event the altar call was made that day, I literally ran to the front, joining hundreds of other people. At this point, it's not unusual to dismiss or take lightly the fervent commitment of children at the revivals. A lot of people think that young children cannot make a decision for the Lord. But when I went to the front among the crowd of adults that will day, an old man around 70 years old he was wearing a huge coat, and he had such substantial, soft hand same to me, bent on his knee, and just gathered me to himself, hugging myself. I remember disappearing into his coat, and it was so sweet and comfortable, I did not want to give there. I still remember the smell of his coat today. He just hugged me to help himself, and that symbolized acceptance of me, a child, in the church of Christ. It also represented security and then a sense of belonging. I was one of the brethren. From then on, the church took me seriously, because the following that Sunday, they put me up on a table and asked me to share my testimony of everything that the Lord had done! I spoke out, and I am told today that some people were challenged and cried as a result of my testimony. From that time, I have not stopped talking about the Lord. I have talked to 1000s of young people in schools, women ministries, and couples ministries. After I married my husband, Gershon, who is an evangelist, we went on preaching together. I went to college, got my education, and taught physics and chemical make up in school for about 14 years before the Lord called me to the ministry of counseling. How have you ever seen the field of counseling center and change the part of the world where you work? Some people are literally pioneers in the field of counseling in the countries. When I began the Oasis Counseling Center in 1990, I knew very few people who were in full-time Christian counseling in Kenya. So I have actually been a part of that ministry of premiering professional Christian counseling. There's very little lay counseling, so most of my time is definitely spent in equipping the church to be a counseling community, rather than waiting for people to crumble and then coming to Oasis. The changes that I have seen are changes that have come through some of us in the field. The counseling ministry in Kenya is professional, Christian, and boldly prevent have in nature. Many people have opened the entranceway to us since my husband and I have worked with the church for a long time. We have been able to introduce programs like couples workshops along with our preaching and evangelism. The credibility of our lifestyle encouraged people to trust us. We seen doors swinging open from bishops to lay people, and I think this is what has helped counseling to advance through Africa. Yes, it's true. The reason I decided to change professions was because of the students who secured bringing their problems to me. I discovered that the kids had so many problems that I was not able to help these adequately. What actually drove me into counseling was the following story. I was a deputy major in a girl's high school. One morning I was just about to do assembly for the Morning Prayer when a person came running into school crying. I could see she was really stressed. Mrs. Mwiti, I need to talk to everyone right now. Susan, I cannot talk to you now, were just about to do assembly. But I have got to talk to most people! She said. OK, I said. Go to my office, and I will talk to you as soon as I am as a result of with assembly. When I finished assembly and went into my office, she was still crying. At this moment this girl was about 15 years old, and I had led her to the Lord the year before, so that i knew she was a Christian. I said to her, Susan, what's up? And she began to tell us this story: Since I got saved, I have been able to handle the stress in my family. There has been a lot of stress inside my family for a long, long time. Dad drinks heavily, comes home drunk, and then starts fighting with my mummy. We live in a marionette, and often, I have to climb up the stairs when Dad comes home. I have to put this ear to the keyhole, because I know anytime he will start beating Mom up and I have got to increase in to separate the two. I am the firstborn and I have got three other siblings, younger than all of us, and the baby is about two years old. This week, the tension has been very high at home. Last night, Dad came in again at 3: 00 A. M., and I stayed up to make sure he was fast sleeping before something erupted. But last night they did not fight. This morning I came downstairs, dressed for the school, and my little brother who never goes anywhere this early in the morning, was also dressed up. The house help, a young guy that lives with us to help with the baby, was also dressed up. I said, Parents, where is John going? and Mom said, We are leaving. Where? I asked. Who is leaving? Barbara, stop asking so many questions. What I want you to do is go up to your room, get whatever items you think you need and come down. We are leaving in the next five minutes. Even Dad? I asked. I am never talking about your father; I said we are leaving. I knew something was horribly wrong. So last of all I said, But we cannot leave Dad alone. If you think you love your father so much, then you can stick to him; if you think its me you love, you come with me. But Mom, its not a matter of really enjoy. Who's going to cook for him, look after him... I am confused. Someone has to stay with Dad! I eventually said, I do not know what I am going to do, but I am going to stay with Dad. Then I picked up my schoolbag together with I ran all the way to school. Mrs. Mwiti, I want you to tell me, did I make the proper decision? Now, in teachers college they taught me how to teach physics, how to check substances with chemistry, and how to do lab projects, but they did not teach me how to minister to kids who ? re hurting. I examined my heart and said to myself, Gladys Mwiti, you have had enough teaching physics and teaching chemistry get out of here! For quite a while, I had been feeling this frustration of seeing hurting small children in class unfocused, hungry, in pain, emotionally frozen. I went home, and I told my hubby, I am in the wrong place, and the Lord is saying get out! So by faith, I had to go back to class to study psychology. The only place I could study in Kenya was a secular university, the U. Ohydrates. International University they have a campus in San Diego, California (the mother campus), and this campus in Nairobi. I studied psychology for fI have years. I kept reading and integrating the work of Ray Crabb, James Dobson, and others. Soon the Lord made it very clear that he wanted me to do a faith ministry start Oasis Counseling Center. The struggle has been mighty, I mean really big, in setting up this succeed in Africa, but it's been very satisfying. So , has your work been primarily with teenagers? I help everyone. When you are talking of a ministry which is out there with nothing else, you cannot say, I do families, I really do youth. From the very beginning I have worked with youth, so I am very, very close to young people; I love them. People do a lot of youth counseling that automatically goes into family counseling to marriage counseling, which leads to despression symptoms, stress management, conflict resolution, leadership training, etc . We started out aiming at a small urban population within Nairobi. Nairobi is about three million today, and there's almost nothing else around. We have people coming meant for counseling sessions from the rural areas, 200-300 miles away. I sat back and I said, Our god, what else can we do now? The answer was to train lay counselors at the community and religious levels. Then the hurting people can find somebody who can work with them at least at the encouragement level of counseling, just before they look for the professional. If we help lay counselors set up counseling departments in the church, they are able to train other lay counselors to help in the counseling. Then we train pastors in supervisory skills. Some of the ways we got into the training of lay counselors to reach the rural communities and even the rest of the city that we is unable to reach. In 1990, we were focusing just on lay counseling in Kenya, but by the so next year, people were coming from the rest of Africa for three-weeks of training in lay-counseling skills, and then returning to their own countries to set up counseling ministries. Through that program, we have 500 people, scattered all over Africa, doing set counseling. How did you get involved with counseling the United Nations staff when they were evacuated from Rwanda around 1994? In April 1994, the United Nations evacuated over 300 of their staff employees with their families because of Kigali. All the hotels were fully booked in Nairobi. This was five days after the plane of the leader of Rwanda had been destroyed and the onset of the genocide. I was just finishing devotions, and a vehicle with a United Nations registration number drove up. The Christian dry hiver had a note on U. And. letterhead instructing me to report to one of the hotels in town. I told my secretary to cancel your appointments and I would call her from the hotel. When I entered the hotel's lobby, there were bags and folks everywhere. A woman met me and took me to a small room: Gladys, she said, we need want you to do something for us beginning now. We have a fax here from New York, from the U. N. headquarters, proclaiming that all the people evacuated last night need to be debriefed. The instructions are that we debrief them before they are used anywhere or sent home because they have seen such horrific things in Rwanda. We have set up a room for your needs and you can begin your first group as soon as you are ready. I called my office and said, reschedule almost everything for the next two months! As I counseled and debriefed the U. N. staff, I was joined in the future by the head of a counseling unit from New York, and two professional counselors/consultants from Canada. For two a long time, we worked with the employees and their families, and it was such tiring stuff. How did you love yourself in the midst of that work? I could not get self-care until the end of the two months; it was crazy. Nevertheless my husband is a great guy; he can just sit and listen to me for hours, so he did a lot of debriefing for me. But by the end of two months, I scheduled some time with a professional counselor. I saw your ex for several sessions, but I was in such a state of mind that I could not go back to work for another month. What That i realized about the U. N. staff is that very few of them had really experienced any trauma. Their own experience of trauma was hearing gunshots and grenades go off. A few of them remembered seeing gory stuff. For example , at least one said, I remember seeing a dog chewing a human hand as we drove out of Kigali to Bujumbura inside Burundi and then airlifted to Nairobi. I appreciated the fact that the U. N. wanted counseling for its staff members, whether the people felt traumatized or not. And some of them did not think they had been affected until the center of their sessions. Then they just broke down in tears. I had even more concern about the Rwandans left behind. That U. N. was so concerned about their employees, who hardly had lost a single member of their families (thought some of them had seen colleagues killed) but who was concerned about the millions of Rwandans? Men, women, and little ones who had seen blood, some of them lay under dead bodies for days, some of them live in holes to get months who is counseling the Rwandans? I asked the head of the counseling ministry, the offices in Nairobi, and the counseling unit in New York what they were doing to help the Rwandans. The answer came back the same: Not a single thing. So I went to the All Africa Council of Churches is, the overseeing body of the Protestant places of worship is in Africa. What are we doing about Rwanda? I asked. What can we do, Mrs. Mwiti? I just went to the Association of Evangelicals of Africa, the body that looks after the evangelical churches is. Nothing at all! I went to people that I knew had regional offices working in Nairobi but working in Rwanda nothing! I bought very frustrated, and so my husband one day looked at me and said, Gladys, you seem to be spending a lot of time wondering people what they are doing about Rwanda. What are you doing about Rwanda? Me? I asked. My organization is too small. Too small? he replied. If the Lord wants you in Rwanda, is he possibly not big enough to do that? I started reading, writing, and researching. By the end of 1994, I had supplies for training, but I did not know what I was going to do with them. Someone heard about me and produced those materials. By February 1994 we had materials published. By April 1994, they were translated into Kenya and Rwanda, and we were beginning trauma counseling in Rwanda. Since 1995, we have trained 216 counselors in Rwanda. But they, each of them has counseled or trained 60 others since then. So we have across 10, 000 people today counseling in Rwanda. Counseling and small groups are mushrooming all over the place. We get them through a process of healing themselves, because you cannot bring healing to others until you are healed one self. They go home with Bible-study materials and pastor's notes that we have prepared. In group counseling, they will support one another as they complete their healing. By the end of the 10 weeks of Bible study, these people already are addressing the needs of poverty, the needs of AIDS, and they are setting themselves up in small inter development projects, such as chicken and goat keeping. The are some of the programs that we are involved in at Oasis. Our three-week lay counselor training has evolved to other programs during the year, such as training for individuals working with disadvantaged children, street children, orphans, and abused children. What are some of your goals for the future? Your requirement in Christian counseling on the continent of Africa is not in just addressing people and problems, but to remain involved in helping to shape people's behavior. I am referring to the whole issue of values. Values that keep people from crumbling, values that keep kids from drugs. I am talking about biblically-founded beliefs that people sometimes do not hopeful bold enough to teach, and I think Christian counselors have the goal of teaching. More and more Christian counselors ought to be trained to boldly analyze what is happening and then help parents to teach values to their kids, help commanders understand the principles of servant leadership, help fathers to be better fathers. My dream for Photography equipment is for an all-African training institute of Christian counseling, where people do not just learn the skills but can now come up with materials and strategies for reaching the masses. If we do not teach people how to live, i am leaving them in a vacuum. We'll continue with the training of lay counselors, but we need more skilled counselors who will take a place in theological colleges, training schools, and universities, and make sure that Christian counseling might be part of the curriculum in those places. That's my dream. What would you want to say to AACC members approximately their contribution to counseling in Kenya and Africa? I am excited about AACC members looking beyond The united states. Whether I like it or not, America is our world influence today. The dollar has become an international foreign exchange. The whole world is hard on the heels of America. We are getting more from you than dollars. Each time a movie is released in Hollywood, it hits Nairobi in the next couple of weeks. With the Internet, communication between La and Nairobi is instant. My prayer is that AACC members will realize that they are shaping Religious counseling around the world by the very fact that we in Africa know you love the Lord and we are following ones lead. You cannot stand back and tell us, Do not follow. So we hope that God is in people's activities not just on their currency. Wherever the dollar finds its place, Christian counseling needs to find its position. So I would like for AACC members to remember that Africa is bigger than a country; it's a continent using Islam, Christianity, and animistic religions. It takes me eight hours to fly from east to Rest of the world Africa. The Lord may lead AACC members out there to help us in other ways and we shall be thankful, but basically, I want to encourage all of you to keep following the Lord, because we are following you. Sounds like a challenge for a higher accountability! Let me add briefly that about fI have years ago, the Lord put on my heart your requirement for a Christian counselors association to be an accrediting body. Because the need is so great, anyone can arranged himself or herself up as a counselor. We have individuals, who go for a week's training, and they return declaring, I have been through training and now I am a professional. I have been praying and working so hard, and finally in 1996, the Christian Counselors Association of Kenya got registered. I am the current chairman, and the accreditation committee is certainly working hard to set standards of training and accreditation. Its a dream come true. Already, many other countries for Africa are saying, come over and help us to form our own associations. Very soon we are going to start visiting several countries, bringing all of them together, and helping them to set up Christian counseling associations in their countries. This will inspire training, it will encourage standards, and it will also be able to push for universities or theological colleges in their areas to set up Christian counseling departments. When this happens, we shall be looking for AACC to send us people from time to time to return and teach in some of the places. At Oasis, we hope to have a diploma in Christian counseling, teaching the idea at the Institute, and also a Masters program. We need people from the America to come and help us set it up and people in publishing to help us with book old_resources. How large is your staff at Oasis, and precisely how would you characterize your approach to Christian counseling? There are six full-time staff members, including myself, and then four part-time professional counselors. We have 33 professionals on the training staff, because we have got a huge training program. The professionals comprise pastors, medical doctors, psychologists a few of them teach in universities psychiatrists, and university lecturers. All of them are committed Christians which love the Lord and follow our model of Christian counseling. Our approach basically assumes the fallen dynamics of man, the fact that God wants us to be transformed, not just to be spared but to be changed coming from within, and that when Christ comes in, he turns things upside down, and we need to live in obedience to her. I can actually say that around 75% of those who come to us, if they were not Christians first, these become Christians during counseling. Or if they are weak in their Christian walk, they get encouraged prior to when they leave. Our approach is not direct have; its more of an eclectic model. But it is basically some sort of model that helps people get to know the Lord and live in obedience to him by the end of treatments. Phone Therapy is a wonderful medium to help you. What kind of problems do you deal with at Oasis that might be unique to Kenya? There are not any that I need to tell you, because you see, with this global model issue, we are as sick since everyone else! High on the list are marital problems, family issues, youth rebellion, drug abuse, stress, and major depression. Basically the problems are due to the changes taking place in Africa. I am told that by the year 2000, 45% of Africans will be living in the cities. Child abuse is very much on the increase, so there is not whatever is unique there. Kenya is a nation where most people go to school, so we get the same problems that some other money-centered, material-centered society experiences. Most of our tribal structures were pretty solid, but with all the mobility of folks, were encountering all of the community structure crumbling, individualism coming in, and self-worship. When the problems arrive, they take from the core. The difference is that you do not have the tools and old_resources that we have in North America. Just! And that's why the disintegration will be faster, thus we need to work ever so hard. That's why my belief is that church presents the example. I want to work myself out of business very quickly. The more the church does just what the church is supposed to be doing, the better for society. God wants each person to use his or her gifts, plus the gift of encouragement can belong even to a child. So , I must multiply myself, and the sooner We do that before the year 2000, the better.

S: I was one down
D: and who won the hole then
T: Sam did because I was exhausted
S: I’m jet lagged
D: Sam you played really well
S: I did. I was very pleased. It was that driver you kno
w D: you diver was well. You know it was all very square.
S: I was glad it ended like that
H: We should have won
T: no you shouldn’t have
D: yeah we definitely should have
T: no you finished like one hole on the front line
H: your point is.?
D: Harry lost his, how many balls did you lose man?
 H: too many man
T: I lost a lot of balls. I think I lost an entire
S: you threw one in the lake
T: well that was a stupid ball. I missed the par
S: yeah that was the problem, the ball
T: it was all the balls fault.it was an oblong
H: in golf you have expensive golf balls and they’re like 8 pound each
 T: no they’re 5 pounds
S: they’re expensive
H:okay so 5 pounds. And I took paddy to play golf a week ago and out of his bag. He’d obviously going to your drawer and taken 6 pro-b1s. And i was like paddy you can’t be hitting pro-b1s. You can’t soi took all of them out his bag and out them in mine and replaced them with my crummy ones. I lost all 6 in 6 holes.
D: its expensive being a dad with 4 kids but talking about expenses. We’re very excited because the brother’s trust has just launched this new event. It’s gone brilliantly.
S: it was launched friday
T: its raised over 90(?) thousand dollars
D: what is it. It’s now sunday so we launched it Friday in london during the screening time
T: what screening
D,S,H: we watched the avengers
T: oh right
D: your mom and I phoned it.
S: oh is that why she left?
D: yeah to make sure it was up. She was on wifi, she launched it. So while we were watching the film we were also looking at the counter at how many views
H: how do you do that?
D: mom’s got it on her phone T: 90 thousand is amazing already
H: we can use that extra 2 thousand to replenish the golf balls we lost
D: actually that is a good disclaimer. None of the money is used for luxury holland  days out. All of the money goes to
 T: entirely non- profit
D: yeah no one gets paid at the brother trust
T: should we talk about the charities? We could each talk about one of the charities
S: should we establish what it is?
T: Why don’t you (harry) tell us about your trip to Kibera(?)
D:wait before we do that, why don’t we tell people what they can win in the do’s
S: why don’t you (tom) do that cause you’re the man
H: you can see me
T: harry will be there. So hang out with him.
D: its the premier in LA
T: its the LA premier for Spiderman far from home
D: which we just watched the trailer of
T: we just watched the trailer of. Which we dont know when it comes out and we can’t disclose any information for
 S: when is the premier?
T: I think the premier is June
H: ask for the trailer and then
 D: June 15th I believe … mid june
T: mid june but if you go online or on my instagram and the link in my bio, you can see all the details about when the event is and when it will be taking place. But whats really exciting is the ability to go to the far from home premier, we’ll give you $1000 spending money, we’ll put you up in a snazzy hotel. The winner will basically get the opportunity to fly with a friend from anywhere in the world to LA to attend the FFH premier with me. Harry will be there, Sam and dad will probably be there. On the carpet, we’ll take pictures, there’s an amazing after party that we’ll go to. Obviously we’ll get to see the film which is the most exciting part of the process. I haven’t even seen the film yet so you’ll be watching the fim for the first time with me watching for the first time which will be pretty awesome. And uh yeah, it’ll be pretty awesome
D: it’ll be a great night. And that’s what people are entering the raffle for. The money that we raise guys we are really
T (off camera): ow!
*pause*
H: I really hope I get credit as your hand double in spiderman
D: oh right yeah
T: harry’s hand was in the first trailer
S: yeah because when you unzip the suitcase wasn’t that you
H: that was the first time I did it. It was terrifying
S: were you nervous?
 H: oh my god
S: you’re just unzipping a suitcase
H: no no no it was the first day of filming…
*pauses for spoilers*
T: start again.we were on set for ffh
 *Pauses again for spoilers*
D: good I’m glad that resolved. So the brother’s trust when we founded it we have the idea that we would shine light on the charities that don’t get the publicity that big charities can generate. And we wanted to use charities that are very sort of cost effective. That sort of have most of the money going to the recipients not offices in london or new york. The big things what we didn’t want the money being spent on. And one of the charities is Lunchbowl and you just been to kibera so you
S: you (Harry) go on all the trips, you do
T: I know, you do all the cool trips H: I know, I’m the cameraman D: it was a great trip wasn’t it
H: I went to Kibera, Which is the second largest town(?) in the sub saharan in africa and its the place of a charity we support, lunchbowl. What lunchbowl does is they have a nursery and now a primary/ secondary school and they basically take kids out of the slum and provide them with school and then on saturdays I believe it is they have a feeding program within the slum where they have 300 kids from within kibera come and they feed 300 children and they give them food and a stash of milk and then on sunday they have rugby.
T: they play rugby?
D: yeah they go to a posh school
H: they go to a regular posh school in Kenya. The posh schools have it then they have these coaches that come
S: we bought one of the busses, didn’t we?
H: yeah. So one of things the brother’s trust did was we bought a bus which when I first heard that I was like why do they need a bus. But really the rugby ground is 5 kilometers
D: a long walk
H: so what happens is the bus is completely full to the point of them sitting on top of one another like this. And then what happens is when I was there, I saw like 20 kids at the gate. They’re just outside waiting at the gate and I went over with the head coach and he was explaining to me that these kids walked there 2 hours. Some of them are barefoot. To play rugby and then they get a meal afterwards. Another thing the bus does is take the kids from kibera to the new secondary school. I think the reason its so great is because the chance of a child making it to 5 years old is 50%. So you’re talking like the flip of a coin. So taking a child out kibera for the day. For 8 hours, 10 hours a day drastically improves the chance of survival
S: mom was telling me during holidays they get really upset because they miss school so much.
H: they say teachers can tell a massive change in behaviors after a holiday
 T,S: Really?
H: because for these kids going to school is like, its like heaven
D: and what they’re trying to do in kibera is what we take for granted. We have school from 4 - 18 mandatory, free for us in Britain/England. And what they’re trying to do is give these kids a chance to become educated.
H: They want, so they used to have this school that went from I think 2-6 which is great but its not great because when a kid finishes at 6 years old where are they going to go? They go right back into the slum. So now that it goes up to 15, they only started that last year, that’s so massive for them. Because they can take a child from 2 years old to 15 and they can really shape the person they are with the teachers.
D: its worth saying in light of what I was saying earlier, every pound that we give to lunchbowl, 97p is given to the children, 3p is postage.
S: last campaign did 406?
D: yeah yeah and we had a guy come over from america
T: was his name Erik?
D: yeah
T: he was really nice that guy
H: we gave him a tour of set
T: he came to set, we had a good time. He was lucky because they were about to tear down that venice set weren't they
H: I feel like .. marvel police
T: well that was in the trailer. There’s gonna be a red laser on your forehead
H: right over there by the building with his marvel cap on
D: and he stayed at the Sevoy(???)
T: the venice set was so amazingS: I couldn’t .. they like dyed the water and everything
*another pause*
D: i don’t remember ever reading a marvel comic
*tom plays a sound effect*
D: what is that applause?
S: are these like loads of sound effects?
T: yeah its got loads of sound effects. I bought it for your …
*Tom plays booing*
D: Oh I’ve heard that! I’ve got that at work
Tom (off camera): take us out sam. Send us home.
S: okay that enough golf talk. But the main thing is the brothers trust campaign we’ve launch. You can go on Brother’s trust instagram and find the link, donate, and enter into the raffle. We can’t wait to see you at the LA premier.
D: 2 people
T: 2 people and 1 has to be over the age of 13 and its going to be amazing. Peace out.
D: no more surprises.

School Education
Most such schools are costly, have high educator understudy proportions and give a learning domain wherein every kid can learn at his/her own pace. It would be fascinating and educational to do an examination on what sway the sort of school has had on the life of their graduated class. Each state in the nation has its own Department of Education that runs its own educational system with its own course books and assessment framework. As referenced before, the educational program, instructional method and assessment strategy are generally chosen by the SCERT in the state, following the national rules recommended by the NCERT.
Each state has three sorts of schools that follow the state educational plan. The administration runs its own schools in land and structures possessed by the legislature and paying the staff from its own assets. These are commonly known as government schools. ssc recruitment The expenses are very low in such schools. At that point there are exclusive schools with their own property and structures. Here the expenses are high and the educators are paid by the administration. Such schools generally oblige the urban white collar class families. The third kind comprises of schools that are given award in-help by the legislature, however the school was begun by a private office in their own territory and structures.
Tumblr media
The award in-help is intended to help diminish the charges and make it feasible for poor families to send their youngsters. In certain states like Kerala, these schools are fundamentally the same as government schools since the educators are paid by the legislature and the expenses are equivalent to in government schools. Ethiopia is the second-most crowded nation in Africa after Nigeria with a populace of 105 million. It's likewise one of the least created nations (LDCs) on the planet, positioned 173rd among 189 nations on the United Nations' Human Development Index.
Like other low-pay nations in Africa, Ethiopia by and by faces the colossal test of making an increasingly comprehensive and productive training framework in the midst of fast populace development. Contrasted and other sub-Saharan African nations, Ethiopia has been fruitful in easing back populace development and now has a moderately low ripeness rate by African principles, however its populace will by and by swell to an expected 191 million individuals by 2050.[1] More than 40 percent of the populace is right now younger than 15.
In spite of Ethiopia's blasting economy, the nation's instruction framework stays immature and tormented by low investment rates and quality issues—a circumstance halfway owed to Ethiopia having been denied of financial improvement for a considerable length of time. As the World Bank has noted, Ethiopia was "one of the most instructively hindered nations on the planet" for a significant part of the twentieth century, as a result of furnished clash, starvations, and helpful emergencies. Flanking Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan, Ethiopia is arranged in a district of the world that is politically profoundly unsteady. It has experienced political viciousness and radical political changes in its ongoing history.

Nougoutna Norbert Litoing, PhD candidate
"The value of a person is inherent by virtue of the fact that the person is created in God’s image and likeness ... whether or not we are considered “productive” by society."
Norbert is a Jesuit priest and a third-year PhD student in the Committee on the Study of Religion. His research involves the comparative study of Muslim and Catholic pilgrimage traditions in West Africa and the relationship between pilgrimage, memory, and identity.
At Home in the World
I am from Cameroon, which is geographically along the Western coast of Africa and politically a part of Central Africa. Cameroon shares a border with Nigeria, Chad, the Central African Republic, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of Congo. I am specifically from North East Cameroon along the border with Chad. My parents are from two different ethnic groups, my father is from a group called Masa (different from the well-known Maasai of East Africa), and my mother is from an ethnic group called Tupuri. My father’s village is about seven kilometers from my mother’s, so they didn’t have to travel a long distance to meet each other. I grew up mostly in the south of the country. My father was a soldier, so we moved around where his work took him. For about 14 years I lived on different military bases around the country. We had to adapt to each new place. As one of the consequences of this constant movement, I have very few childhood friends from when I was young. I have, however, learned to be at home wherever I find myself.
When I was 10 years old I expressed the desire to become a Catholic priest to my parents. I asked to join a minor seminary, which is basically a middle and high school for young boys who are thinking of joining the priesthood. I got my A-levels in S1 (math, physics, and chemistry) at the minor seminary, which is the certificate that qualifies you to go to university. Even though I still desired to be a priest, I felt the need to take some time for further reflection before making a firm commitment. I consequently decided to go to university and began to study mathematics. In the meantime, I was in touch with the Jesuits who I had discovered by reading and through a friend from the minor seminary who was already in touch with them.
The Language of Love
During my freshman year, I journeyed with the Jesuits and eventually entered the Jesuit novitiate at the end of the year. Even though there is a Jesuit novitiate in Cameroon, I was sent to the one in Rwanda, in the Great Lakes region of Africa. The novitiate is the first stage of formation for Jesuits. It lasts two years. It is a time of initiation into the Jesuit order. A center-piece of this initiation consists of undertaking the spiritual exercises, a 30-day retreat during which you have the opportunity to read your own life story as a sacred journey, being able to find the traces of God’s presence in your own life and the ways in which God might be calling you to serve people out there.
Apart from the retreat, another memorable experience of my novitiate formation was an internship that I was asked to do in Burundi. I spent six weeks there in a center for mentally and physically handicapped children. It was one of the most important experiences in my life up to now. At the beginning, it was very frustrating. I had a language barrier. I couldn’t speak with the kids. My Kirundi was next to nothing and my Kiswahili was very basic. I was asked to teach them French, and after three weeks I was still trying to teach them the alphabet.
What helped me to overcome my frustration was the realization that I was being called to speak with them using another language: the language of love. Just being there with them, they simply enjoyed being around you. By the end of my stay there it felt like home. As my parting gift, the kids gave me a big piece of paper on which they had drawn a heart. They had colored it and written their names. I kept it because it reminded me of my experience there, which taught me that the value of a human being does not reside in what a person is capable of eventually producing. The value of a person is inherent by virtue of the fact that the person is created in God’s image and likeness. I learned that we have an intrinsic value independent of what we are capable of doing or producing, whether or not we are considered “productive” by society. I remember one kid in particular, her dad was a prominent university professor in Burundi. Sometimes he was frustrated when he realized that he had this prominent brain and all that it produces, but his own child could not even make a full sentence. It was frustrating for him. But to have a child like that was an invitation precisely for him to realize that there is another way of assessing the value of a person. That’s what those children did for me.

Service and Studies
After those two years in Rwanda, I was sent to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where I studied philosophy in what has now become Loyola University Congo. I spent three years there, earning a BA in philosophy. After that I was sent to Senegal for regency, which is a time of pastoral ministry. I lived and worked in a city called Tambacounda, not far from the border between Senegal and Mali. There, I was in charge of Religious Education in our Jesuit parish and Catholic junior high school.
In Tambacounda, we equally run a socio-cultural center that serves children from poor families. I mentored a number of these kids. My first year in Tambacounda was difficult because I was adjusting, but the second year was wonderful, so much so that I actually asked if I could stay there beyond the required two years of regency. I was, however, not allowed to stay, as my Jesuit superior sent me to Hekima College, a Jesuit University in Nairobi, Kenya, to study. I did a master of divinity degree there and was ordained a deacon in February 2012. That same year I was sent to England to do a master in Islamic studies at the University of Birmingham. I was ordained a priest in the Roman/Latin rite of the Catholic Church in June 2013. In December of the same year, I was sent to Senegal to help open a new Jesuit community in Gandigal, a village located approximately 45 miles from Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. Together with another Jesuit, we were tasked with exploring the possibilities of opening a center for interfaith relations there. I spent a year and a half in Gandigal, serving religious communities in Senegal and Gambia.
I was then sent to Boston College School of Theology and Ministry for a Master’s in Theology (ThM), a one-year program. I then joined the PhD program in the Study of Religion here at Harvard in the fall of 2016 under the subfields of comparative studies and African religions. I hope to work on Muslim and Catholic pilgrimage traditions in West Africa in a comparative perspective, exploring the relationship between pilgrimage, memory, and identity. I am now in the third year of the program. I serve as TF for two classes while I prepare for the general exams, which I intend to take in the spring.
As a Jesuit, when in studies, my pastoral ministry is very limited. A cornerstone of our Jesuit spirituality consists in “finding God in all things.” My studies currently constitute the site of my encounter with God. From time to time, I celebrate Mass and listen to confessions in some of the local parishes as a visiting priest, but my studies constitute my main mission right now.
The Tortoise
I wouldn’t trade the experience of living in many places for anything in the world. It has done something to me; it really gives you a unique perspective on people and life. It forces you out of your comfort zone. And if you go to these places with an open heart, you usually learn a lot from the people you encounter and through the experiences you have.
I tell people that everywhere is home for me. If somebody asks me “have you gone home?” I say, “I am always home.” The symbol of my mother’s ethnic group, and it has become a symbol of my own spiritual life, is the tortoise. It moves around with its home on its back. I tend to be at home wherever I find myself. It is true some places can be more home than others in terms of the experiences you make. But I believe that other people do not have the power to determine whether I am happy or not; I don’t give that power to people. You should have it in your own hands. Don’t give them the power to determine what becomes of your life.
The poem “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley is my favorite. It says, among other things, “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” It’s the meaning of my name as well—my last name Litoing means “self-made.”

Executive ImpactBorn free: Ex-returnee Rui Yamashita and the raw art of entrepreneurship
TOKYO
“I’ve travelled and lived in many countries, but I honestly feel that Kenya is a place where people are generally positive and happy—even if some don’t have much.”
When Rui Yamashita speaks about her adopted home in East Africa, she does so with a passion that’s immediate, authentic, and infectious.
Tumblr media
A Japan-born graphic designer and artist, Yamashita is the founder of Kangarui, a Nairobi-based design and fashion company inspired by the beauty of Kenya and its people.
Her voice bursting with enthusiasm, Yamashita told The ACCJ Journal that she wants her work to go beyond mere utility. She hopes to embed it deep within the hearts of her customers, reminding them of their origin.
“Kenya is full of very rich hearts, and I want to spread that. I want people to eat with my art, carry my art, or wear it so that they can feel that happiness as well.”
From household wares to clothing, bags, and accessories, Yamashita’s creations are sold in East Africa and the United States, as well as the Middle East and Asia. In Japan, her creations have appeared in pop-up shops at Seibu Department Store’s Shibuya location and Daimaru Department Store in Osaka.
ROOTS OF PASSION
Born in Kochi City on the island of Shikoku, Yamashita spent her childhood in Thailand, Kenya, and Indonesia due to her father’s work as an engineer.
When she was four, the family settled in Nakuru, the fourth-largest city in Kenya, located near Lake Nakuru National Park.
“It was normal for me to go to the bush,” she remembers, looking back on a rather idyllic childhood. I didn’t grow up with lions in our garden, but we did have monkeys and chameleons, and access to the national park.”
Waking up, she would peer into the mid distance and see the lake covered with pink flamingos, which would gather there every day to drink and dine.
On other occasions, the Yamashita family would enjoy barbecues, camping, or safaris in the area.
“Oh, the horizon! And the beautiful blue sky! And the endless grassland in front of you! I feel that it could change people’s lives if they see that once.”
Joining the dots is easy with the benefit of hindsight, but it’s hard not to imagine that the roots of Yamashita’s passion for design—and the seeds of her blossoming career—were planted there on Lake Nakuru’s shores.
THIRD-CULTURE KID
Yamashita attended the private Braeburn High School in Nairobi and International School Kenya—the latter having been founded through a collaboration between the governments of Canada and the United States.
But even in childhood, she already showed signs of creativity and a passion for transcending cultural barriers.
“I’ve always been creative—I had my own origami class in school, for example—and that’s why I chose to study art and design in university.”
So, when she relocated to England for college, Yamashita had every intention of following a creative path.
And yet, she wasn’t sure exactly where her passion lay. Was it fashion? Design? Art? To find out, she took an art and design foundation course in London.
“But when I first tried fashion, I realized that I couldn’t stitch to save my life, and I didn’t care much for drawing people.”
ON THE ROAD
If not fashion, then what? At first, graphic design proved to be a challenge, too, “because you’re always in front of a computer and sat in one place.”
This was a hard field to plow for someone who, as a child, had run free on the plains of Nakuru.
However, when she did sit down and try her hand at graphic design, a strange thing happened. “My teachers often complimented my work, so I realized that it may actually be what I’m best at.”
After her foundation course, Yamashita enrolled in the graphic design program at Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom.
When she graduated and returned to Japan for work, she was in for a shock—after all, she hadn’t lived here since shortly after her birth.
“I was around 22 years old when I came back to Japan. But, as I didn’t grow up there, I really knew nothing of the life there and what to expect.”
So, it came as no surprise that, after working in a variety of design-related roles in Tokyo, she found herself back on the road—this time to Germany.
FROM HOBBY TO BUSINESS
Working mostly from home as a graphic designer in Germany, Yamashita’s interests led her to try user interface design, a fortuitous path that introduced her to digital art.
Inspired by digital art emanating from the United States, she soon began creating her own variations of the form.
“When I had a collection of such work, I realized that they were all connected to Kenya,” she remembers.
Not only were her creations related to East Africa’s wildlife, they were also filled with dynamic colors that harked back to her globetrotting childhood—particularly those years spent in Kenya.
“I thought: This is a sign. I must be missing Kenya so much.”
Even with her collection of designs in hand, she never thought that this would become a business.
However, there was a website in the United States that allowed users to upload images and have them printed on cushions. “So that’s what I did.” At first, Yamashita made cushions to furnish her new home in Germany.
It was not until her friends started to request—and pay for—similar creations that she thought of turning her passion into a business. Thus was born Kangarui—a combination of her first name and a Kenyan fabric (kanga), as well as the Swahili word for guinea fowl (kanga), her favorite bird.
The colors, she says, reflect the rich positive hearts of the people of East Africa.
Whether pillows with vibrant flowers, dishes sporting a speckled guinea fowl, or a tote-bag design inspired by local fabric, Yamashita’s creations have an uplifting effect—or so her customers tell her.
Tumblr media
FINDING HER VOICE
This is not to say that her entrepreneurial journey has been a road lined with roses; it has not. As far back as her first, post-graduation foray into the world of work, Yamashita believes she has always had to prove herself to naysayers and doubters.
In Kenya, Yamashita initially felt she was not taken seriously because of her age and relative inexperience—and being a woman entrepreneur—especially by industry insiders, such as suppliers and manufacturers.
In her first professional position, she worked as a designer for a public relations company. The challenge there was to navigate Japan’s corporate world—a place notorious for being a cultural minefield, especially for returnees such as her who are not versed in the way things are done.
Even today, she confesses, she still triggers the occasional cultural mine in Japan.
Despite the challenges, which have included expanding her business from its initial business-to-consumer model to include a business-to-business strategy, Yamashita is finding her feet and entering new markets. Her customers include major home-design retailers, hoteliers, souvenir stores, friends, and family.
Interestingly, it’s not just the wildlife and nature of East Africa that have spurred her entrepreneurial spirit.
“In Kenya, I meet so many powerful women who are very open about their success. They are strong and live independently and are so happy. They push really hard to do the things that they love; and they are all around me. It’s very inspirational.”

I don’t know what to do about this text i wrote today. At first it just came out because i was considering making a “what if” scene. But then i started writing it and include things i didn’t say yet about characters, and then it turned up into world building and i kind of want to continue it but i have no place where to post except on the blog. So here it is =)
Keeps in mind that this scene is set during Satoru’s third year at UA !
And here is the list of the kids if you’re lost, since you don’t know them all that well yet. Especially since i tried to have every single one of them having at least one line:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1acW4wZqcFobpi7CzRArJazrgfi4K1BSeiBeAp8wKAAg/edit?usp=sharing
-The next kid who open his mouth is expelled!
The bus went silent, and all student sat back on their sit under Aizawa’s death glare. The teacher sighed, and went back to sleep, knowing that he would need to to do that again in less than 20 minutes. It was always like that when they traveled by bus. Even more now that Class A and Class B were reunited in the same bus. (But it was, he supposed, less tiring than having to check two bus and retrieve the student who tried to sneak in the other class vehicule to sit with their friends).
-Risu, off the damn roof.
The squirrel girl went back to her sit -or more precisely, went back to her friend, Kenya’s sit, and hide in his fluffy cotonhair - as if nothing ever happened.
-Shashin, if you duplicate just another paper airplane with your power, you’re the first one to go.
Hibiki raised his hand, like a criminal apprehended and sit back, as a dozen of paper airplanes fall to the ground.
All might, and his never ending patience and kindness, stepped in and recalled them all:
-It’s fine to have fun, but don’t forget to behave well when we arrive at the center, children will be looking up to you, it’s important to give them a good example! All right kids?
-Yes Mr All Might!
-Wait? What center? What kids? Suddenly asked Makoto, looking as if the bus was suddenly leading him to hell.
Of course, his headair habit never ceased to amuse the rest of the class who laughed wholeheartly. He never ceased to surprise them, even after almost three years together. Satoru was beginning to think that Electric-type always had the tendencies to shut down their brain cells.
-Come on Man, i talked to you about it all week long, complained Daisuke next to him. -We’re going to see my little bro! In my hometown!
Makoto frowned for a moment, noticing how this classmate’s shoulder was against his, and how he was not striking by lightning yet. Which meant only one thing:
-Wait that’s the truth? I’m totally lost!
Yuu took pity on him and explained:
-We’re going to visit the government center, airhead. You know the place where government put into safety people with quirks too dangerous for the society or show new kinds of ability that we need to study.
Makoto’s eyes lightened up as he finally made the connexion.
-Ooooh!
All might saw the opportunity to start the lesson early, and be sure to keep the whole bus calm, so he took it and resumed:
-As Miss Jishaku said, the place we’re going right now is under the governement’s supervision. But it is not a research center as you might think. This is a city, where people with abilities so great that it’s either a danger for others around, or that needs to be developped under constant supervision, are welcomed. The government provide them a  place to be.
-Is this really okay though, wondered Heiji with empathy -WHat about their family?
-This is an excellent question, my girl! Well, the government isn’t allowed to separate family -history proved that it was never a good thing to do- and so all close family is relocated along, there, with jobs within the facilities provided.
-Why can’t they keep their old jobs? Asked Nagori.
-Because, my boy, this place is heavily secured. For years it it was even a secret place that only a few knew the localisation! Think of it like witness protection program in USA, people who are relocated here are to be protected and have to leave their old lives behind for the sake of confidentiality.
-I heard that 20 years ago, the place was even located on some island, commented Takashi.
-Well there can’t be just one place like this for the whole japan, there’s probably other places, i would try to hid it in one of our islands too if i were in charge, remarked Hana with a smirk.
Satoru shook a bit Mahô’s shoulder, to woke her up, as the teacher started to tell them how such places came to be, and how it was always under the supervision of private society to make sure that human rights were respected. The girl snored, rubbed her eyes, listened for maybe, half a second, and then went back to sleep on her friend’s shoulder.
-You know, it might be on the test next month, you should really listen.
The girl grumbled as she took her phone off her school bag and tapped the screen, so it could record whatever the teacher was saying. Then she rolled the other way and resumed her nap. Satoru could feel how tired she was, and gave up the fight, making sure the phone was close enough to record All might’s lesson (even if he knew she had enchanted it in such a way that it couldn’t miss a single word from a teacher).
-Hey, isn’t he talking about your mom’s family? Asked Max, the seat right behind him.
And though Satoru had missed what All might had said, all he had to do was focus on his friend’s memory to get it back and answer correctly:
-Yeah, The Yaoyorozu are one of the private companies that assures governments treats people with special quirks with human decency, among other things.
-Wow, your family is really everywhere, whispered Max.
Coming from the son of a diplomat, he found the comment amusing, but Max never really quite got how high standing his situation was.
-It must be awful, whispered Yuu, being forced to move back in some secret location, change job and leave their old lives behind.
-Not that much, defended Daisuke- I mean i thought it was all right while i was there.
-I thought you lived there all your life? Asked Makoto.
-Well, yes, my family is there since three generations, because of my great-great-grandfather’s power. That’s how Kino and I are related, i’m from the side of the family who got moved there, and he is from the side of the family who stayed, well in whatever place they were before i suppose?
-So you’re kind of unconcerned, you never got to leave your old life for this, remarked Sei, which caused, as always, Daisuke to pout, dejected.
Hearing that, Shiori raised her hand and asked All might :
-Sir, What kind of ability will have the people there?
-This is an excellent question again, my girl! You might think that since you’re pro heroes you get to see strong quirks everyday so why do one need protection or to be studied when an other don’t?  There is a clear categorisation for that!
They waited for All might to continue, but apparently All might expected the same from them, so they stared at each other for a while before one decided to speak:
-I had a classmate at kindergarden who started secreting acid from his skin, and people from the government went to take him, but he was back a month later to the class. Why? Isn’t his quirk fall into the dangerous for other category?
-Exactly, my boy, Kenya. But all quirk can be dangerous for others, Thirteen made sure your learned that during your first year, right? As long as you can control it, you are not considered as dangerous. Here you’ll see kid with quirk they cannot stop or control, hence the term dangerous applies to them constantly.
-So, Satoru started, as he rose his hand- if, for example, one’s quirk was to eat off emotions of another...He would need his quirk in order to live, he wouldn’t be able to survive without it, but his power would be dangerous for those around. Would this kind of person be taken then?
All Might almost lost his smile for a moment, as he knew the reason why Satoru gave such an example, but as always he didn’t let the sadness take over and answered without faltering:
-This is indeed a good example; but again it depends what kind of effect eating emotion would do to other and themself. Is it dangerous for people he eats emotion from? Is it dangerous for him and his health? If not, he would not be taken. Beside you’re using an example of a villain foreigner, am i right? What i say to you only apply to japan, all the world do have similar system, but there are some changes inherent to each country.
-I see.
Satoru didn’t really like the answer, but that wasn’t something he could do much about right now. He still promised himself to do some researches on his own so he could have a better understanding of the situation. He wondered if, in the past, the black market he got himself wrapped ever targeted such place and closed his eyes to look into the memories he had gathered there. It didn’t take him even a second ; one of the villain he still had access on his brain knew the answer. Yes, they did wanted to target such places, but couldn’t, they weren’t strong enough to make such a dangerous attack without compromising their cover. It intrigued Satoru even more ; what kind of places was it to scare the people who managed to kidnap hundred of people without getting caught for more than twenty years…? And what kind of quirks they would see there? So he asked, and All might was fast to answer:
-We’re talking about quirk time related or dimension related.
-When i came to be, informed Kyouji, as he floated to All might, government official came to study my quirk too, to see if it was related to the afterlife and not just astral projection.
The teacher nodded in agreement:
-Power like yours which can extend our knowledge about life itself, twist dimensions, or which can see the future, are very valuable and precious. I once had a sidekick who was raised in this kind of facility because of his-
-NIGHTEYES IT IS NIGHTEYES RIGHT? Jumped Kino, star in his eyes as he heard of his idol.
-Ye-yeah exactly but…
-Is it THE facility he is from we’re going? Is he where he grew up? Are we going to see HIS CHILDHOOD HOUSE?
As All might was bombarded with fanboy questions, Ume started to giggle and exude a flowery scent. Since their teachers were busy -both, since Aizawa was snoring in the first passenger seat- Satoru turned to the only one left that could answer him:
-So how come you managed to get out of the facility Daisuke?
If the place was even as guarded as the villain he used the memory thought it would be, then it had to be as hard to get out than it was to get in. But Daisuke frowned:
-We’re not prisoners you know, we can go out whenever we wants. Well it’s a bit more complicated when you’re the one with the power that is rare, but the family can go wherever if they want to.
-So, you’re not the one with rare power? That’s a surprise, i thought that your clone ability was great, wondered Goro, as he took the place between Satoru and Mahô.
-Fluffy, mumbled the girl in her sleep as she choose to use him as a pillow rather than her best friend. Satoru would have called her traitor, if he wasn’t so happy to get so close to the other boy. He just hoped he wasn’t blushing too much to make his contentment obvious to everyone.
-Well my power is sure great, explained Daisuke. -But nothing compared to my Great-great-grandfather’s. And someone always seems to inherit it in my family, my grandfather, then my mother, then my brother. That’s why we’re still here.
-What’s like?
The boy scratched his nose, very proud, as he said:
-My little bro can create clones like me, but he can create clones of other people’s too. AND, most important of all, he can choose what their clones would be like. As long as he is awake his clones remain there, as powerful as real person!
He probably expected a better reaction from them because he added, after a moment of silence:
-Seriously? That’ super awesome, like...Hm...how to say...It’s like Kino’s power you know? he gets to choose at which point of one’s life the clone will be from! From which future it’s from!
-What?
-Yeah, you know like that one time we talked about what we would be like if we were villains? Well all my brother need to do to make you see what you really would be like as a villain, is a bit of your dna to eat!
-Yerk, commented Tsubaki, man of little words as always.
-That’s indeed a powerful quirk, but i think Kino’s better, why is he not in such place then? Asked Yuu.
Daisuke, who apparently was very proud of his family, didn’t really like the comment and defended his little bro’s honour with teeth and nails:
-’Cause Kino can’t know why or how the person he incarnate became like this. He got nightmares but it’s not very clear and it’s confusing! PLus he can only go ten years into the future, or in one’s past! Whereas my brother can make SEVERAL clones of someone at the SAME TIME, and each clone can explain how they became like this! Since they’re their own person. My bro can even tell if he took them from a future or a possibility that never happened but could have happened, sometimes. I think! Maybe?
-The last part isn’t very sure.
-Well he is like, only 12, so of course we’re still learning about him, and we can’t spend all our time making him use his quirk to see the limit; he has school and friends and life you know!
-He is allowed to have a normal life, then? Asked Goro with his blinding smile that made always Satoru’s twist.
-Well, that’s the point of the Yaoyorozu company being involved, he tried to say with his usual voice -except it was as weak as a whisper and he hated it-They have to respect human rights.
Fortunately Goro had great hearing skills and didn’t miss what Satoru said. Neither did Daisuke since he developped:
-Well, when you’re the one with the special power, you have a different schedule, sure. But you go to school like normal, it’s more as if, he had extra activity planned on week-end he had to attend. There government agents help him develop and control his power. But there’s always a guardian with him, most of the time it’s my mom or my dad, and a third party from a private company.  When my brother wants to go out the town he has to sign paper, and see someone who has a disguise quirk, so he can go without being recognized. Sometimes he is lucky and even have one of the heroes guarding the place coming with him!
-Oh, suddenly realized Makoto. -Wait didn’t you said that’s the kind of hero you wanted to be?
Daisuke laughed:
-Yeah! I think they are the best, they don’t do that for fame, they’re hidden heroes! And when i was at school, teachers always said that if a government agent overused their power or blackmailed our family, we could go and talk to them, they would protect us.
Maybe he was biased from the start, but Satoru still didn’t like the place. He would have hated to be sent there, and be at the mercy of strangers, again  being used and under the power of an organisation. The knowledge that his maternal grandparents’ agency was in charge did little to lessen his doubts. The fact that his maternal grandparents worked there comforted him a little though : he knew them and how hardworking they were. Beside they had the title of heroes -even if he didn’t think it was possible until today, so they had to be part of what Daisuke explained, those shadow heroes gave up on fame.
But Satoru didn’t have time to reflect too long upon him, only half an hour later, Koyuki made a surprised noise, and pressed her cheek to the bus window:
-Guys, guys! Look!
Even Takashi, Tsubaki and Kahei lifted up their eyes from their portative consoles, and Yosuke from his vomit-bag.
The road they were one was nothing interesting, so far. He liked the river, bordered by big white stones, that reminded him of the landscape from Miyazaki’s movies. But for now they were kind of lost, wandering in between two mountains -that Yosuke gazed upon with fear, as he knew they eventually would have to go back up there to leave. The large large path was so flat that Satoru wondered why there was no farm using the place to cultivate rice. Then, suddenly, he noticed what Koyuki had seen first, with her keen eyes.
A chasm. Almost invisible because of the pines and fir trees, but still there. And, for a moment, it seemed like there was something inside the chasm, but Satoru missed the chance to see. There was a path, not paved, that went there.
-Please tell me we’re not driving into this, mumbled Yosuke, already sick at the very idea.
But the bus didn’t enter it, instead it stopped, and Aizawa stood up:
-Everyone, take your bags, we have arrived.
Daisuke was so exatic he didn’t walk, but bounced himself out. Satoru took the time to wake up Mahô at least.
-You know, night is for sleeping, maybe you should do that.
-Meh, sleep is for weak, she answered with a tired smile that proved she considered being really, really weak right now.
Satoru didn’t want to argue right now, so he just said:
-Promise me you will talk about it to Kirishima, so he will make sure you have a less busy schedule.
-Can’t do much about it, olympics start next month, i have to train.
-Maybe but it’s still dangerous for you to be this tired all the time. There will be no olympic if you injure yourself.
-And that’s why we have Tsubaki and his grandmother’s super quirk, she smiled with the sign of victory.
Her phone rang the moment she finished her sentence. Satoru just had to close his eyes to know : It was a text message from Tsubaki saying “If you break your leg, i break your ears”.
-It’s okay Tsu’, laughed Mahô as she stepped outside the bus ; I don’t need my ears anyways!
Satoru sighed, but there wasn’t much he could do about it. So he followed his other classmates as they entered the path between bushes. The river bed was becoming larger and larger, he could hear it now, and he understood how he underestimated the size of the white rocks, it was huge, as huge as Ryuunosuke, the dragon-mutated-guy of class A !  And the said guy was already trying to climb on the top of one with Lazare.
-Do you think he hates seeing something taller than him? Asked Max.
-No he just plan to jump into the water from there, sighed Satoru.
The second after, Ryuunosuke not only dived into the river, but dragged Lazare with him. Which of course, didn’t end well, because Arya thought they got the permission to do it, pushed Yule in the river before following right after with a big splash. They all got wrapped into Aizawa’s scarf and dragged to the dust, as a punishment.
-Unbelievable, who gave me such kind of student, i can’t believe i didn’t expelled you all already...Grumbled Aizawa.
-You like us too much, it’s too late now, recalled him Satoru.
-I’m starting to reconsider it.
The chasm suddenly appeared before their feets, and finally Satoru saw what was inside : a City lied at the bottom, somewhere 50 meters below. Surrounded by these natural walls, it was almost invisible and the river ended up falling inside as a waterfall, forming a beautiful lake, covered every noise the city could make. No wonder they hid the place here, only a flying ennemy would notice such a place. And even then, they would have to know it was between those two mountains.
-This is awesome! Screamed Kohaku, as she jumped in and let herself glide into the chasm.
-I never took this route, confessed Daisuke, there’s an underground tunnel if you want to go back to civilisation.
-That, my boy, is a top secret route that only government official and residents can take, you shouldn’t talk about it, explained All might.
-Oh, sorry!
-Do we have to climb all the way down there? asked Yule, she was already soaking wet and Satoru could feel that she didn’t want to make any effort in her state.
Teachers didn’t have to answer, as they saw a shadow take Kohaku in the middle of her fly. They didn’t have time to worry about their friend either, because the second after this, a hero appeared right before them, holding the little squirrel girls in her arms.
-Kouda told me you would be arriving soon, but please, refrain to do that without telling us. I thought it might be an attack.
-My apologies, our Risu tends to act without thinking, said All might. -Thank you for catching her without hurting her, Lady Vulture.
Kohaku looked away, finding the ground suddenly very very interesting, more interesting at least than the scolding. Vulture smiled and shook All might’s hand.
-No problem! It’s a pleasure to meet you all kids! Hi Daisuke, i saw you at the festival, you did great!
-Thank you!
-Are you all ready to go? For those who can fly their way to the ground, dive with me! For the others, there is a telepheric cabin a little farther to the east, Kouda, my colleague, will be waiting for you there!
That being said, she spread her wings and jumped with a joyful scream, Yule sighed, and followed too, with Kohaku, Arya, Kenya and even Yume used his power to create wings on his back. After a second of hesitation, sharing a glance with him, Mahô finally decided to go too, using her enchanted bag to summon her witch broom. Satoru didn’t mind, he was okay with the ground, even more if it gave him the opportunity to see his Mama and Papa’s old friend, Kouda.
Kouda didn’t change much over the years, maybe he got a bit bulkier, but as they arrived to the cabin station, he seemed as calm and sweet as ever, busy talking to a bird. He greeted his ex-teachers and gave Satoru a pat on his head and a smile.
He had heard that the hero found a job in the mountain, but he thought -and his parents too- that he was just patrolling, helping rangers and stuff. He supposed that the shy man had signed a confidential contract that didn’t allow him to say more. The kid was still a bit disappointed in himself for not discovering it with his ability. He had thought he was closer than that with the adult. But, now that he thought about it, he never really bonded with the man, and didn’t see him that often. Satoru was still happy to see him though, and the man seemed at ease here.
-Okay kids, started Aizawa, as they all gathered into the cabin. -Remember to behave. Don’t fight, don’t jump into the lake -don’t push your friends or kids into the lake. Be an example.
-Keep in mind that the children you’ll be dealing with all have special quirks they might not control yet, stay on guard but be kind to them, added All might.
-If you have any trouble with any, talk to us about it, whispered Kouda.
As they talked about the securities consign, Satoru’s gaze wandered on the city below. It was a nice place, each house seemed to be unique in it owns way. Some looked like old japanese style, other were more modern, and there was a big facility that was probably the main research center, that looked really high-tech. He had no trouble imagining Daisuke living peacefully here. But it still made him a little bit claustrophobic : there was really no way to go out, without the government knowing.
Then Satoru caught a glimpse of a tiny figure. A girl, probably younger than him. While lot of kids were playing in the main place of the town, she stood was all alone by herself. She had a sky blue skin and her hair seemed as fluffy as clouds. He didn’t know why she, especially, dragged his attention. Maybe because she seemed lonely.

“You Can Start With Nothing”- Diana Anyango‘s Entrepreneurial Journey
UM MBA Student Places First At Business Accelerator for her business Samaritan--An app that will connect individuals in medical crisis to the help they need.
Tumblr media
After a 12 week intensive startup accelerator hosted by the Blackstone LaunchPad at the University at Buffalo, Diana Anyango felt exhilarated and validated in her business idea; placing first in her cohort.
Diana came to the University of Montana from Kenya through a scholarship, graduating with a degree in Community and Global Public Health. After graduation she planned to jump into healthcare in Missoula. However, “life is never so smooth.” She met her now husband at UM, the co-founder of Samaritan, who joined the army which relocated them to Alaska. The problem was, the only jobs available in Alaska were finance. So she decided to try something new, as many people had told her she had a “brain for business.
Tumblr media
Diana and her husband, Bruce
The idea of Samaritan began after two deaths occurred in Diana’s family. Coming from a different culture as well her husband being both Native American and a veteran, she says her circle of friends and family constantly communicates to support each other. However, when one is in a state of crisis or needs medical assistance, they may not be able to contact someone to get the help they need.
“We were there thinking about how these two things happened, and how no one could have asked for help. For example, when you're dying of a heart attack, you can't scream, you're just alone.”
Then, when she happened to witness her elder neighbor take a tumble on his lawn, she ran to go help him.
“He had pulled out his phone, ready to call 911 and then I realized. This is exactly what we need--in those situations when it is not necessarily an emergency, but you definitely need help or otherwise it is going to become an emergency. That is when the concept of Samaritan was born.”
The vision for Samaritan now is an app that will connect individuals in medical crisis to family, friends, and neighbors. Your inner circle can sign up as a “pod.” Then, in the case of a mental or physical health crisis, you can request help with a push of a button which will then send a message to your pod members. Additionally, the app will be able to scan the area to find those who are able to assist you. She calls it “if Uber and Nextdoor had a baby.”
Prior to the accelerator at the University at Buffalo, Diana competed in a sixty-second pitch competition hosted by pitch.com. She did not win, and felt discouraged. However, Diana didn’t stop there, as she says she “had to keep my eyes on the prize.” Looking back now, she says she was glad she didn’t win. Samaritan was so early in its venture, and her loss encouraged her to delve further into her idea and focus on launching the business.
After she received a late-night email from a BLP staff member about the Buffalo accelerator, Diana decided to jump in and apply. She was accepted as a part of the early stage cohort. The program aimed to get participants from what Diana describes as “where it lives in your head to when you can share it with other people.” This included customer discovery--which she holds to be the integral part of the process so far--as well as creating a website, learning marketing strategies, and ultimately pitching a business idea.
“It’s been a lovely journey.”
Now, she plans to continue with customer discovery, explore the market, and lean on advisors. Towards the end of the year, she will start working on an alpha version of the app.
Diana is currently an MBA student at the University of Montana, which she says has been very beneficial and applicable to her business.
“From the finance classes to creating projections, from classes on entrepreneurship and finding out what a business value canvas is to project management, from creative thinking to design...Everything I have learned so far from my classes have been so useful in getting us to where we are right now.”
In a business class, she was asked by a professor to define an entrepreneur. She believes that an entrepreneur can be anyone:
“You don't need any specific skill sets, you just need to have an appetite for risk and rejection, and have a lot of grit. The kid outside standing with a lemonade stand is an entrepreneur.”
Throughout her journey, she’s learned the importance of sticking to the values that she started with at the beginning.
“What I learned through creating pitches and jumping into numbers is the importance of staying true to your brand. Pick your core values and the details can change. At Samaritan, we want to connect people, we want hope to be the main theme of our app. We want people to be nice to each other.”
Diana hopes to compete in the annual John Ruffatto Business Startup Challenge (JRBSC) this fall. The competition is an opportunity for Montana’s brightest and boldest students to present exciting new entrepreneurial ideas for adjudication; and a chance to win a share of $50,000 to excel their startup.
When asked about what she would tell someone who was considering participating in an accelerator like the one at the University at Buffalo or a competition like the JRBC, she responded with: “There's no better time than the present. Get out of your head and do it, don't be afraid to fail. You're never going to find out if it works unless you try.”
Learn more about Samaritan on their website, and follow them on Instagram and Facebook. Diana is always looking for more advisors to be in her corner, so if you are interested and qualified, contact [email protected].
