[Transcript] Season 4, Episode 4. Quantum Leap 2022 Eulogy
Gone too soon! Quantum Leap (2022-2024) has been canceled and Ron and Mon aren't taking it well. We share our thoughts about the show, what we loved, what could have been improved, and we run through a list of our favourite episodes.
Listen to the episode on Spotify.

Hello, and welcome to a new episode of Stereo Geeks.
I'm Mon.
And I'm Ron.
This is our Eulogy to Quantum Leap 2022-2024.
Rest in Peace.
Can I just say, I did not see this coming, but I feel like you had an inkling that this would happen.
The first season was renewed almost immediately, and this one, it came, it went, no one talked about it.
And then I got that feeling, you know, it's like, you just know it's doomed.
And I was right.
I know that there are going to be no more seasons, we only got the two, but we still want people to watch it wherever they can find it, which is why we're doing this episode.
So a little bit about the show.
Quantum Leap is not exactly a remake, more like a half sequel to the 80s Quantum Leap show.
It was extremely popular.
2022, we heard about Quantum Leap.
We thought, let's give it a try.
We quite quickly fell in love with the show.
First season went absolutely brilliantly.
We were excited for the second season.
And yeah, now, alas.
So let's take a look at the cast.
We have Dr. Ben Song, played by Raymond Lee.
His fiancee, Addison Augustine, played by Caitlin Bassett.
Then we have the kind of tech genius, Ian Wright, played by Mason Alexander Park.
The security chief, Jen Chu, played by Nanrisa Lee.
The head of the Quantum Leap division is Magic, played by Ernie Hudson.
In season two, we had a recurring character, Hannah Carson, played by Eliza Taylor, and also Tom Westfall, played by Peter Gaddio.
I'm probably pronouncing that wrong.
We also have, throughout the two seasons, a few appearances by a character called Janice, played by Georgina Riley.
Not too much into her because spoilers.
I'll also shout out some notable guest stars.
We had Brandon Routh, aka Superman. Obviously not playing Superman here, but still.
Lou Diamond Phillips, a veteran of Hollywood.
Melissa Roxborough, who we recently saw in Manifest.
Justin Hartley, who's been in a lot of stuff, but I believe most people know him from This Is Us.
Jewel Staite, who most Canadians know because she's a Canadian actor.
Deborah Ann Woll, who's coming back as her character Karen in the Daredevil series.
Robert Picardo, who obviously we know very well because he was the doctor on Voyager.
And James Frain, who is in everything, like he's James Frain.
Season one had 18 episodes.
Good, solid season.
Season two had 13 episodes.
I guess the signs are already there.
I really think so.
I mean, we didn't realize it, but anyway, this is a celebratory episode.
We're never going to see these characters again.
But yeah, this is the goodest time of the year to just get in there, watch these two seasons, enjoy a really heartfelt, rousing show about finding the best in humanity.
Let's get into it.
We never got around to watching the original Quantum Leap.
They didn't show it where we were.
It's a bit hard to now get into it.
80s aesthetics, some of the sensibilities.
I hear that the original Quantum Leap was way ahead of its time.
You know, people are fans even now.
Even though we went in cold, one of the most exciting parts about Quantum Leap in general is time travel.
And this reboot, remake, reimagining definitely stuck to a lot of time travel.
Yeah, I love time travel in any of its forms.
I have seen some shockingly bad films because they were apparently about time travel.
Anyway, I think the reason why the Quantum Leap concept is so fun is because generally with time travel, you don't want to change the past.
That's a bad thing.
Butterfly effect and all that.
But in Quantum Leap, the whole purpose is to change the past because that's what's going to make things better.
Yeah, absolutely.
And it makes things a lot better for characters who are queer, especially in this show.
And that's actually one of the things that I really like about the show being made in 2022.
Love how all the show's characters are just unabashedly allies of the queer community.
It's like not even a second thought.
No one's fighting that battle.
And it's especially great because Ian, played by Mason Alexander Park, is a queer character, and they are queer in real life as well.
So this just feels so much more layered.
They don't go on and on about it, and all of Ian's storylines are not about them being queer, but they're definitely the center of it, when that's the episodic storyline.
I thought all the characters were really interesting.
It's a very diverse cast.
The dynamics among the characters are very interesting, but each character also has an arc of their own.
It wasn't just, you know, Ben and Addison's romance, but you know, in the background, you have Ian, Jen, and Magic.
Like they're this trio of heroes that are making things happen and trying to save Ben.
Speaking of Ben, this show lives and dies by the fact that he's not only played very carefully and sweetly, I would say, by Raymond Lee, but he's also really well written.
He's purposefully written as this very kind-hearted person.
He believes in the best of people.
He knows that, yes, sometimes you're in a situation that is absolutely terrible.
You've done something or you could be doing something, which is horrible, but there's something to redeem you.
I just love that so much.
And that plays into how each episode is structured, because it's all about the rousing speeches at the end that Ben gives.
He wins the heart of whoever he's talking to, but he also wins the heart of the viewer.
Absolutely.
Ben so easily sees the best in people, and that's why when he makes a sincere appeal to their humanity, they listen.
And we as the viewers are also listening.
And I feel like after every episode, we just felt like better people.
Yeah, if there's one major grouse with the show, it's that we only get two seasons of it.
Exactly.
I mean, we're definitely upset the show is canceled because Raymond Lee was so game to do anything in this show.
Like he was a flight stewardess in one episode.
He was a lady bounty hunter in another.
It could have gone so many different places.
And we probably would have seen more opportunities of him hanging out with his other teammates because they would have been the holograms instead of just Addison.
We got to see that a little bit, but season three, they kind of promised that that would actually happen.
And now we never get to see it.
Yeah, exactly.
The first few times that the others got to be holograms, it was a lot of fun.
Like Jen was singing about it, which was absolutely hilarious to watch.
Like when magic got to be a hologram, so much emotion, just so much emotion.
But yeah, now we'll never get to see that.
But is there anything that didn't work for you?
I think the one major thing that didn't work for me at all was the whole Janice plot line in season one.
I think it needed to be fleshed out a lot more.
They were trying to be very cagey and keep things under their hats, but I feel like maybe they went overboard.
Or if they'd been able to stretch it out a little bit more over two or three seasons, we would have really felt, I think, the stakes of exactly what was happening and why a little bit better.
For me, I think season two, the Addison-Tom relationship, it didn't work for me.
I couldn't really see the chemistry between them.
And for some bizarre reason, I just couldn't trust Tom.
I still don't trust him, and we'll never know if our concerns were warranted or not.
Since this is a celebration, let's chat about some of our favorite episodes.
It was really tempting to put all 18 of the first season and all 13 of the second, but you know what?
We need to be tempered in our view.
So if you are wondering if you want to invest so much time into the show, maybe start with just these faves.
Kicking off with season one, one of the episodes that I really found quite emotionally stunning was episode three, Somebody Up There Likes Ben.
First of all, there's a lot of physicality in this episode because Ben leaps into the body of a boxer.
There are a lot of stakes.
It's an emotional roller coaster, and it also has a really powerful message about mental health.
It was so lovely.
It will definitely have you quite emotional by the end of it.
The first two episodes of the first season got you hooked.
Episode three was when I realized this was a great show.
And they tried different things.
They weren't just formulaic or one-note.
With episode seven, for example, Oh Ye of Little Faith, it was a Halloween episode, and it was completely a horror genre.
And how they made it work and made it plausible within the context of the story was fantastic.
But this was so good.
This was…
It was hilarious.
It was kind of scary.
And Ben Song was an absolute delight in this one.
To make the horror elements work within the world, it was very impressive.
They could have done so much more.
And there was another genre episode that I was really impressed by.
That was the 10th episode of the first season, Paging Doctor Song.
It's a medical episode.
Generally, I don't like medical shows.
They make me feel ill.
But even though this episode is kind of gory at times, it's so unexpected and unpredictable plot-wise.
And again, the emotional beats, they just come out of nowhere.
Well, I think this particular episode for me was a reminder that the show is about people.
It's about how we interact and live with each other.
And that's what makes us come back for more.
And we would have come back for a season three if they hadn't canceled it.
And literally the next episode is probably one of the best.
It's called Leap Die Repeat.
Look, time loop episodes are a mainstay of the time travel genre.
They are also some of my favorite tropes.
I can't think of a single time loop episode that was bad.
But there is also so much danger in this episode.
The stakes are insanely high.
Ben could die at any time, but he's cycling through these time loops and he is actually running out of time as well.
There's always, you know, there's got to be some deadline to your obstacles.
Also Robert Picardo is in it.
It's a banger.
Yeah, I have to say that was edge of your seat stuff.
And the next episode after that is also our favorite.
This is odd.
All we can say is that middle part of season one was really good.
So episode 12, Let Them Play, it's a chance manifesto.
We won't get into the details, but it is so full of feels.
There's a lot more of the episode characters rather than the main characters, but also a focus on Ian and how they're bringing the queer perspective and the queer lived experience to what the story is about.
Mason Alexander Park really brings a lot of emotionality and depth to Ian's storyline there.
Some great scenes about being trans, about being queer.
It's really, really a very good episode and absolutely a joker.
Oh yeah, that one just, it really does bring so much emotion.
It's a really powerful story as well.
And also an interesting mystery.
And really relevant to the current situation, even two years on, in the US and the UK especially, and now maybe in Canada.
Well, moving on to episode 13 of season one, that middle bunch of episodes was just spectacular.
Family style, it's an Indian episode.
We gotta shout it out.
But there are so many lovely little moments about this episode that made it stand out for me.
Ben loves to cook.
Like in the previous episode, he is overjoyed because he gets to be a basketball coach and he's a basketball fan.
But he is in his element in the kitchen.
He is losing his mind because he gets to cook this amazing food.
And also there are all these family dynamics that you and I recognized.
It's a top favorite for me.
Yeah, this one had probably one of my favorite closing scenes.
It was just like all the fields, all the fields.
But you know what I really liked about this one?
We live in a multicultural society.
Like the whole world is multicultural right now.
You can't imagine a time when we were growing up where you would have watched something where the main character of an American TV show would just be super excited to be in an Indian restaurant trying out this amazing Indian food and getting deep into actually trying to cook it.
And here's Ben just enjoying himself.
Like he's just having the time of his life and this is food that he's familiar with and he likes.
It's just so good.
It was just, it was heartwarming.
And so on to season two, I will say I was a little bit concerned when it started.
The first two or three episodes were a little off and it really was because of Ben.
Story wise, it made sense why he wasn't himself, but it didn't pick up till Ben was kind of back to his usual self.
And I think the turning point was really episode five of season two, One Night in Koreatown.
This one had so many feels.
I did not know what to expect.
It was so layered and nuanced and said a lot about racism in the US especially.
Racism among communities, about other communities.
It's not something that a lot of people are comfortable talking about.
But I think also what made it special was the fact that magic got to be the hologram.
And he's part of an event that he originally experienced as well.
I just found that Ben and magic's relationship, their dynamic, along with the dynamic of the family that Ben is involved with in the story, it was so incredible.
This was my favorite episode of the entire show.
This was a real standout.
I had actually heard an entire podcast series about this particular event.
So when I saw the title, I was like, oh my gosh.
I have to say I was a bit nervous because I was like, this is an event that it's left a mark on people.
They still talk about it.
And I wasn't quite sure how the show was going to handle it.
I think they went in the right direction.
They went ground level.
They hyper-focused on one small family, and the result was very relatable and as you said, a real tear-jerker.
Great stuff.
So moving on to something else, which would you believe it, I had just listened to a podcast series about.
Episode 7 of season 2, A Kind of Magic.
It was all about witch trials.
And as I said, I heard a podcast series, and then I heard two separate episodes of two different podcasts, which were both about witch trials.
One of them was about the American witch trials.
Another was about the European ones.
So I had a lot of information in my head when I went into this.
Again, this show does such a great job.
It just goes ground level.
Ben is in the body of this young girl, who is of course accused of being a witch.
And a lot of the stuff that I was reading about, it was super accurate in this episode.
I was very impressed.
And despite the nightmare situation, somehow Ben finds the positivity to inspire the people around him.
I just love that about this character.
Yeah, witch trials for me, every time I come across any storylines like that, they just make me so angry.
And the writers of the show just know how to calm you down.
Because you can't do anything with that misplaced anger.
This happened years ago.
So this episode felt a little bit cathartic for those of us who just are needlessly angry about something that has nothing to do with us.
Cathartic is the word.
We are just living constantly with impotent rage.
When you watch something like Quantum Leap, and you see Ben going into these situations, and you know that you can't do anything, and all the horrible stuff has already happened, and we are living through a time when there is more horrible stuff happening, and you get to feel some amount of positivity because Ben can fix the situation.
That's why we need this show.
You are making me sad now that we don't get more.
Let's talk about another favorite.
Well, literally the next episode, episode 8, it's called Nomads Egypt.
It's set in Egypt.
Who doesn't love Egypt and spies?
That is a fantastic combo.
And what really worked was that they shot on location.
You feel that.
One of the things that a lot of people complain about, a lot of entertainment media nowadays, is that everything looks flat.
You can tell that they shot on VFX.
Now listen, VFX, when done right, looks great and looks seamless.
But the people who work behind the scenes on post-production need time.
Guess what a lot of people don't give them?
Time.
And the other thing nowadays, everybody wants to cut budgets.
Hence, no location shooting.
So, what do you get?
Everything looks the same.
Thankfully, this episode, I don't know how they had the money to do it, but there they were in Egypt and it looked great.
It has this really nice, old-timey, heist spy movie sort of feel to it.
I love that.
Love that episode.
And in a similar vein, we have episode 10, The Family Treasure.
This was a stellar episode.
It's essentially Indiana Jones.
But it focuses on three siblings.
Ben is one of them.
And they are so wildly different from one another and have very, very different relationships with their dearly departed parents.
And all this comes to the fore because they're on a treasure hunt.
I love treasure.
I love adventure.
And this was only part of what this story is about.
We won't even go into the rest again.
It was just so heartfelt.
Ben is the best ally in all of TV history as far as I'm concerned.
Truly, truly, like Ben brings people together and really helps them see perspectives because they can't.
I mean, he just goes out of his way to see the best in people, and he shows them the good things about themselves that they're missing, which is exemplified in the episode right after that, The Outsider.
Honestly, the end of the season just bangers one after the other.
So Ben's unwavering positivity changes a journalist's mind about her own abilities because she had a bad situation and she let it get to her head.
But Ben would not let her doubt herself.
Honestly, we all need a champion like Ben in our lives.
This episode was sort of going one way, and then it just hits you in the feels because Ben just is like a dog with a bone when it comes to redeeming a person.
I felt very heartened when I watched this episode.
And then on to the finale.
You know, finales can be hit and miss.
The first season finale I thought was one of the weaker episodes of that season.
And with season 2, I was really wondering, where are they going with this?
Lots of twists and turns, quite epic, very tense and intense as well.
But again, that cathartic feeling because Ben is appealing to the best of humanity, even when all seems lost.
You can't even imagine that this man is going to win.
How is he going to win?
There's no way.
Despite all these twists and turns, you can't predict what will happen next.
And somehow Ben is like hanging on and telling you to hang on.
Because yeah, humanity is worth saving.
Yeah, Ben just constantly believes that humanity is good and that when the chips are down, we will do our best.
Apparently, he did not live through the pandemic.
But yeah, this was an epic season finale.
Very, very tense moments.
Some really quite shocking plot twists.
But the biggest plot twist of course was that we couldn't have predicted that they would cancel the damn show.
We are not at all bitter.
Spoiler alert, we are very bitter.
Alright, so that's our episode on Quantum Leap.
I know that it's gone.
It only lasted two seasons, but it was two fantastic seasons.
I'm so glad we got to meet these characters, hang out with them, even though it was only for two years, but they made us feel so much better.
Tuning in every week sparked a little bit of joy in all our lives.
We're going to miss you, Quantum Leap.

heeseung x fem!reader
desc ; starts out with French homework, now your lessons are on much more.
“y/n?” a hand grabbed your shoulder, causing you to turn and face the one person you didn’t expect. lee heeseung. the schools so called “pretty boy”.
“hm?” you hummed. “can you help me with my homework? im seriously regretting taking French.” he giggled. “oh uh yeah, when we’re you thinking?” you asked. “whenever is best for you, mon amour.” he replied, winking and turning around.
you : hey, where are we meeting?
hee : my house? if ur cool with that
you : sure, send me ur address
later, when you arrived at heeseung’s house he explained quickly that in no way did he mean to make you uncomfortable by him being alone with you.
“i was struggling with this part,” he points to a part on the worksheet, “the pronunciation is so difficult.” you stare at him, waiting for him to say he was joking.
“hee, you’re playing with me right.” you gasped. “huh? no i-“ he started, but you both broke out laughing.
after almost 2 hours, the worksheet was finished and heeseung had FINALLY learned how to pronounce “merci beaucoup”.
“it’s almost 7, i should go-“ you sighed. “wanna watch a movie?” heeseung stated, grabbing your sleeve and pulling you back on the couch.
“depends, can i pick?” you grinned. “but- fine. you pick.” he gave into you, handing the remote over. “THE NOTEBOOK.” you scream.
you sit together, watching the movie, crying occasionally, giggling, but then it happened. the sex scene was extremely awkward. “i- the- popcorn?” heeseung said, gathering himself before booking it to the kitchen without another word.
“they’re speaking too much.” heeseung states proudly. “what, not like the porn you watch?” you reply, turning to him. he smiles and shakes his head. “it’s passionate, they’re doing more than just having sex. they’re confessing their undying love.”
“does it really work that way? i mean how can something so… i don’t know… dirty, mean so much?” he shrugs. “are you a virgin?!” you gasp, standing up and covering your mouth dramatically.
“OKAY AND??” he says, turning away. “awhhh pretty boy can’t seem to get any pussy?” you mock, pouting.
“ive just never gotten the opportunity, plus, everyone expects me to be so experienced. i don’t wanna let anyone down.” he sighs.
“i could.. teach you?” you mutter, approaching him. he gulps, nodding. your legs on each side of him, arms wrapped around his neck. “put your hands on my waist. hand placement is everything.” you whisper, placing his hands on your waist.
“let’s start with kissing, foreplay.” you whisper, biting his ear. your hands find their way to his cheeks, connecting your lips.
the kiss is smooth, sensual. heeseung is kissing you like hes starving, craving your lips. his tongue eventually makes its way into your mouth.
then, he pulls away. “is this okay?” he says breathlessly. you hum in response. then, you feel something under your thigh.
you get up, collect yourself, and leave.
you : see u tomorrow for ur next lesson. p.s. take care of urself ;) xx
PART 2??? LOVE YOU GUYS 🤣🙏🤭

Pronunciation
Just a tinny drabble.
Summary: The boys talk about MC mispronouncing their names.
No this isn’t based on a real life event be quiet.
"So... MC saw my name written down for the first time." Mammon says, sitting down on the common room couch and throwing his legs over the arm. "They pronounced it Muh-mon."
Satan snickers, not looking up from his book. "Is that so?"
"Tell me brother, what does it feel like to be the only demon whose name has been mispronounced?" Lucifer chuckles.
"They mispronounced my name too. They called me Aw-s-mo-dus." Asmodeus complains, painting his nails.
"They called me Bee-zil-bub once." Beelzebub says, munching on a burger.
"Ha, they got my name right." Belphegor boasts. "First time too."
"How can they get "Belphegor" right but not "Mammon"? It's Ma-min!" Mammon complains, irritated.
"I can kind of understand how As-mo-dE-us could be a bit confusing, it's why I typically go by Asmo." Asmodeus says thoughtfully, blowing on his nails.
"Yeah, I go by Beel because it is easier to remember than Bee-el-zuh-bub." Beelzebub says. "Though I guess MC wasn't too far off."
"What are you guys talking about?" MC asks, walking into the common room with Leviathan.
"How can you pronounce "Belphegor" but not "Mammon"?!" Mammon says, twisting around to glare at them.
"MC has never gotten my full name wrong. Leviathan says. "However they tend to pronounce Lee-vI as L-eh-v-E."
Satan smiles, hiding his face behind his book. "How cute. MC can only pronounce three of our names correctly."
MC blushes darkly and turns away from them. "I'm going back to my room" they grumble, sulking off.
Belphegor laughs, causing Lucifer to smile and Satan to hold back chuckles of his own.
"Cute, like an angry kitten." Satan says.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was a chilly day as Kai stepped out of the car after kissing his boyfriend of 2 years goodbye. Just a week ago, his boyfriend Taemin got surgery to complete his transition. Taemin is a 5ft8 man who owns a small bakery outside of the city. Kai, on the other hand, is a 5ft11 man who owns a tattoo parlour. Back to the present, after Kai kissed his boyfriend, he said “I love you, mon petit nounours.”
He hurried off to buy a train ticket to head into the city. He told his boyfriend that he would be heading in to buy some more ink for his shop, but that was not the case. Kai was actually going to pick up the ring he ordered for his boyfriend, an engagement ring. The train came a few minutes later and so Kai quickly got on and found a seat near the back of the train, knowing people will avoid seating next to him due to his scary stature. He carefully took out the photograph Taemin gifted him on their first date as a reminder. Kai got off at his stop and rushed to the jewellery store to pick up the ring.
About 10 minutes later, he left the store and headed back home after buying some ink to look like he was in the city for that. He met up with his boyfriend at the train station and got into the car. The two lovers headed home and entered their shared house. “I bought the new ink, it’s purple and green.” said Kai. “Oh! While you were gone, I made an apple pie, would you like some?” Taemin replied. After a few hours, they got dressed to go on the date Kai set up. Once they got to their destination, Taemin found out it was a beautiful hill with fairy lights set up in the trees, a picnic on the floor and pretty stars in the sky. “Kai… This is wonderful! How did you plan this?” Taemin asked, amazed.
“I was able to get some of the guys to set this up while we were at home. Do you like it?” Kai answered. “It’s wonderful!!” They ate and stargazed for about an hour. “The stars are beautiful, aren’t they?” Taemin questioned. “Yeah… beautiful.” Kai said, but he wasn’t looking at the stars, his head was facing towards his boyfriend and his face held the most love-struck look like Taemin was his whole universe. They both stood up, but before they could leave, Kai stopped his boyfriend. “Taemin, you make me believe that there’s heaven on earth. You light up even my darkest days that you truly are brighter than the sun itself. You’ve made me the happiest man these past few years and I hope you can still love me in the future. So will you…”
“...Lee Taemin take this man to be your lovely wedded husband?” the priest asked. “I do,” Taemin replied. “I now pronounce you husband and husband. You may now kiss the groom.” Kai and Taemin kissed with their close friends and family cheering in the background. The fact that a few months ago, they were standing on that hill, tears in their eyes when Taemin said yes. All it took was that one train ride to the city.

Just realized I’ve never actually had to say “Lemon Demon” out loud—is it pronounced the obvious way? Totally seems like something he would do to say it’s Lee-mon Deh-mon or something

It has come to my attention that not everyone says the Obey me boys names like I do so how do you pronounce Mammon, Levi, and Beel? I personally say Mam-own, Lee-vie, and Bee-elle
😂😂😂You have great timing cause this was something I was thinking about yesterday.
Depending on the the brother I pronounce their name in either the 'Japanese' way or the 'English' way.
For example with Mammon I pronounce it the exact same way as the game does (not sure how to write it out as a sound but I think it's like Mum-mon with the 'Mum' part pronounced softer/faster so that it doesn't have an emphasis on it)
While with Lucifer I pronounce it in the 'English' way. Lu-ci-fer
Also:
Levi = Lee-vi
Beel = Bee-l
I however pronounce their full names differently from their nicknames;
Leviathan - Leh-vi-a-thn
Beelzebub - Bee-elle-zee-bub (Same way as Good Omens basically)
None of it was a conscious decision obviously and apparently this is the way I read English (probably cause I'm neither Japanese or English/American but I grew up watching lots of their television so now my pronunciation is a jumbled fuck :/ )

Bonjour Mon Ami.
Nice to meet you all. I’m the little sister of Timothee Chalamet, who I’m sure you all know quite well. I’m the wild child, badass (and baby) of the family and if you’re all wondering what my name is, it’s just as French and just as annoying to pronounce correctly.
I’m Lilou. Pronounced Lee-Loo. But you can call me Lil, Lilo, Frenchie, whatever you like, really. I’ll respond to most nicknames.
Making friends is a specialty of mine. I’m quite the social butterfly and I have a variety of useless facts so if you ever need a trivia partner, you know who to call, okay? I’m sure I can tell you a fact about who invented Coca-Cola and in what year it was first created.
If you’d like to know a strange fact at all, or maybe just say hello, you can find me on hangouts @ lilchalamet

Five frequently asked Supergirl CW questions...
...and possible answers from the comics
Tumblr media
Check social media. Read the forums. Scroll through the Subreddits. There are some questions that just refuse to go away. Time and time again fans of the CW’s Supergirl show keep asking the same old questions: How does she hide her costume? Who is stronger? Why does nobody recognise her?
Likely the questions will continue to be asked long after Melissa Benoist has hung up her cape on the final episode, but just for fun it might be interesting to take a meander through the 60+ years of Supergirl’s adventures in print, to see how successful the comics were at addressing the tv show’s most quizzed quirks.
Tumblr media
Covered herein:
How does Supergirl fit her costume under her everyday clothes?
Why does nobody recognise that Kara Danvers is just Supergirl with glasses?
Is Supergirl more powerful than Superman?
How did Kara get her ears pierced?
How come nobody connects the name Kara Danvers with Kara Zor-El?
It’s roughly a ten minute read, peppered with interesting Supergirl pictures. Enjoy...
#1 -- How does Supergirl fit her costume under her everyday clothes?
Tumblr media
The modern tv incarnation of Supergirl seems uncertain as to whether Supergirl’s costume uses a futuristic (and budget depleting) nano-tech solution, or a classic (and cheap) costume-under-clothes trick. Traditionally, with the exception of Matrix’s brief shape-shifting stint in the job, the comicbook Supergirl has tended to favour the latter tactic, prompting fans to ask how her costume fits under her street clothes. The first such query to reach the DC letters pages was from reader Helen Silberman of Irvington NY. In Action Comic #263 (March 1960), Helen wrote:
Dear Editor, I like SUPERGIRL very much. She is my favorite feature. But I often wonder how she conceals the long sleeves on her costume when she wears a short~sleeved dress as Linda Lee.
Acknowledging that this was a common question, editor Mort Weisinger explained that Supergirl’s super costume is super flexible.: “She merely keeps the sleeves rolled up.” This was confirmed inside the strip itself when Action Comics #342 (Oct 1966) saw Linda referencing the costume hidden under her t-shirt, and an editorial caption handily adds “Linda has rolled up the long sleeves of her super-flexible costume.”
But, respond the fans, what about her boots?
Tumblr media
Since the Silver Age, Superman has adopted the practice of stashing his Clark Kent attire as a super-compressed parcel inside a hidden pocket in the inner lining of his cape. Various stories confirm that Supergirl does the same, and visual proof of this came in The Daring New Adventures of Superman #5 (May 1983), when she is seen reclaiming her dress from the pocket. Presumably the same pouch could hide her boots when dressed in her everyday identity?
Okay, so the boots are super-compressed inside the cape, but what about the cape itself?
Tumblr media
This is where things start to get a little problematic.
There’s plenty of mid-transformation frames stretching back as far as Supergirl’s early Silver Age antics depicting her wearing her cape underneath her regular clothes. How she does this seems never to be explained, so we probably have to chalk this one up to a comicbook trope that readers (and now the tv viewers) just have to accept.
#2 -- Why does nobody recognise that Kara Danvers is just Supergirl with glasses?
Tumblr media
Supergirl has adopted various means of masking her true identity down the years. The tv Supergirl hides behind a pair of glasses; her comicbook counterparts have variously used wigs, special molecule-rearranging hair dyes, shape-shifting, and advanced DEO technologies. None of these, with the exception of Matrix’s ability to shape-shift into Linda Danvers, really stands the real-world credibility test.
The problem here is that the comicbook superhero genre has its origins in a more simplistic storytelling age, were the application of just a pair of glasses, or a wig, or a fake moustache, was sufficient to create a false identity. There’s countless examples from Superman’s early decades of Lois Lane fooling the Man of Steel with just the application of a wig, and indeed the epic Silver Age tale that first revealed Supergirl’s existence to the world hangs on evil Kandorian scientist, Lesla Lar,successfully fooling Superman into believing she is Kara Zor-El by just rearranging her hair.
Tumblr media
One can argue that Kara’s use of a wig is potentially a better disguise than Kal-El’s glasses and change of posture, but ultimately both methods have severe limitations. Research conducted by the universities of York and Huddersfield (UK) suggested that while some disguises (makeup, wigs, etc.) are effective at hiding a person’s identity, the effectiveness drops if the subject is known to the person doing the identifying. As such, in the real world, neither Clark nor Kara would stand a chance of fooling their friends and colleagues.
Tumblr media
In Superman #330 (Dec 1978) there was a half-hearted attempt to address the problem by suggesting that the Kryptonian glass used in Clark’s eye-wear boosts a subconscious super-hypnotises power, projecting an image of Clark as feeble, but this created more problems than it solved. What happened when Clark anchored the WGBS News on tv; and how did Linda Danvers get by without any Kryptonian face furniture? So, sadly, the comics don’t really provide much of an answer -- we must write the problem off as a relic from a bygone storytelling era, that modern audiences just have to accept as part of the established baggage that comes with superheroes.
#3 -- Is Supergirl more powerful than Superman?
Tumblr media
Although both Superman and Supergirl have Kryptonian origins, their route to Earth was markedly different. Kal-El arrived as an infant, while Kara didn’t arrive until her teenage years. Fans (at least those who have wont to obsess over such matters) have therefore speculated about how this affected their power levels.
When Supergirl first appeared in comics it became clear early on that Kal-El and Kara Zor-El had identical superpowers. There isn’t a direct comparison of the two cousins -- they never went head to head -- but DC’s writers certainly seemed to adopt the principle that any super-feats that Superman could do, Supergirl could do just as well.
Tumblr media
That said, during Supergirl’s long history there have been periods when the power balance has clearly shifted. For example, it is reasonable to assume that the Matrix Supergirl (both pre and post merger with Linda Danvers in Volume 4) was less powerful than the Man of Steel. Indeed in the latter part of Volume 4 -- the period when Supergirl sported a white t-shirt and gloves -- she was significantly de-powered, even losing the ability to fly.
Likewise from Adventure Comics #402 to #423 (Feb 1971 to Sep 1972) the Girl of Steel had intermittent issues with her superpowers, thanks to the effects of a drug concocted by super-villain Starfire. At inopportune moments her powers would fail her entirely, resulting in Kara relying on various gadgets developed in the Bottle City of Kandor as a backup.
Tumblr media
But wait a moment... because the balance of power hasn’t always shifted in favour of Superman.
During this Bronze Age period Superman also had issues with his powers. As part of a shake-up of the character, editor Julius Schwartz instigated a story running across Superman #240 to #242 (July to Sept 1971) that saw Superman lose a third of his power levels... permanently(!!) This was part of Schwartz’s plan to curb some of the silly excesses of Silver Age. Some fans have noted, however, that the Girl of Steel’s power loss was only intermittent, and eventually the effects of Starfire’s drug wore off entirely, so in September 1972 she technically became 50% more powerful than her cousin.
#4 -- How did Kara get her ears pierced?
Tumblr media
Since the tv show began fans have been asking about how Kara could have pierced her earlobes of steel. It is clear from the opening moments of the pilot episode that Malina Weissman’s young Kara doesn’t appear to have any piercings when departing the dying Krypton, yet when the episode skips forward a decade to Melissa Benoist’s twenty-something Kara, she clearly does.
Show creator and producer, Ali Adler, responded to a fan’s tweeted question by suggesting that Kara had her ears done “At the mall on #krypton”, which is a fun answer, but doesn’t seem to concur with the pilot. So is there an explanation from deep within comicbook lore?
Yes. (Probably!)
Tumblr media
The most likely explanation is that Kara used her heat vision and a mirror to burn the holes into her own earlobes. Since the early Golden Age era it has been established that Superman is strong enough to piece his own skin with his fingernails, allowing him to give a blood sample. Editors initially responded to inquiries about how Superman shaved or cut his hair and nails by suggesting that these parts of his anatomy didn’t grow under Earth’s sun. But eventually, as Superman spent more time on alien planets, they devised more creative solutions -- the heat vision haircut was one of them.
Tumblr media
In the comics, Injustice 2 #21 (May, 2018) finally let readers see Supergirl (at least a version of Supergirl) using heat vision to cut her hair. Meanwhile the tv show had already treated viewers to Kara giving a super-trim to Mon-El’s mop in episode 2x05 - “Crossfire” (okay, so he was a Daxamite not a Kryptonian, but hey, same difference!) This suggests that Kara’s invulnerability can be defeated by her own powers in the tv universe, just like the comics, so a piercing blast from her eyes rather than a trip to the mall is probably the most satisfying answer.
#5 -- How come nobody connects the name Kara Danvers with Kara Zor-El?
Tumblr media
It may be a small problem, but it’s one that clearly bugs some viewers. Kara Danvers not only has the same first name as Kara Zor-El, but she also pronounces it in the same distinctively European way -- “Kar-ah” not “Care-ah” (despite what Cat Grant may want us to think.)
How does she get away with this?
In the comics this generally hasn’t been a problem. Prior to the Melissa Benoist tv show, Supergirl had been known as Linda (Linda Lee, Linda Lang, Linda Danvers), or as Mae (short for Matrix), or briefly as Claire Connor. Only Kara Kent, the Supergirl of the cartoon show, Superman: the Animated Series (1996), had stuck with her Kryptonian first name. This changed in 2016, however, when DC adopted many of the tv Supergirl elements into its comicbooks, including the Kara Danvers secret identity.
Tumblr media
Up until the tv show’s fourth season it could be argued that Benoist’s Supergirl had been very careful never to make her birth-name public, so there was little opportunity for anyone to link her two personas. But that changed in episode 4x14 - “Stand and Deliver”, when Kara can clearly be heard announcing herself as “Kara Zor-El, citizen of Earth” at a public protest, as a crowd watches. So very likely, after that incident, the Maid of Might’s Kryptonian name was plastered all over social media, and given Kara Danvers’ high profile as an award-winning journalist, we’re no closer to explaining why an army of armchair sleuths on Facebook or Reddit haven’t connected the two women.
Tumblr media
Sadly the comics can’t really answer this Kara conundrum, because it is a problem largely of the tv show’s own making. Perhaps the only solution is to ignore episode 4x14 and assume that everyone in National City (aside from the regular cast) live in blissful ignorance of Supergirl’s Krypton name.
Conclusion
So it’s a mixed bag of success and failure. The comics provide answers to some problems, but come up empty handed for others. But perhaps we shouldn’t be too disheartened. Sure, it may be fun to devise answers to the quirks and oddities of the tv show, but ultimately it won’t stop fans from asking the same questions time and time again. The sillier aspects of superheroes are part of the genre’s charm, and trying to devise clever ways of explaining away the wackier elements is all part of the fun.
Tumblr media
Hopefully you found the above an entertaining and informative read, but the five proffered answers shouldn’t discourage anyone from dreaming up their own explanations -- after all, these questions aren’t really properly answered until the tv show’s writers choose to answer them.
Until then, we can all have fun speculating.

i know that in a mon channel ep from a while back, min had mentioned he usually just tells people his name his lee when he's abroad. which is fine when it comes to like shop staff or whatever but... on a public broadcast? maybe at least TRY to be respectful enough to use his actual name??? (and as cute as it is calling jooheon honey, 'joo' is maybe the easiest part of all the members names to pronounce for a native english speaker?)
right like if minhyuk had introduced himself as lee fine but he literally said “i’m minhyuk” also how can he be calling just minhyuk lee when jooheon and wonho have the same fucking last names like lmao

Any suggestions or lose guidelines on how to pronnounce the names of your characters for us punny mortals? I've been trying, came up with 5 different possibilities, bet they're all wrong (Saorla being pronnounced as Sheer-lah - I think it was?- fucked me right up)
A GUIDE, for the ones I’ve mentioned so far (lemme see if I can recall them all)
Some are trickier than others, but this is irish. Expect to find fifteen letters that go completely silent lmfao. For example, I haven’t posted anything here with that character but there’s a dude named Suibhne: SHWEE-vne. The ‘bh’ sound reads as V in some cases (between slender vowels, I think)
Saorla - SHEER-la
Seoirse is pretty much like Saoirse Ronan (SEER-she or SHEER-she, it depends on the pronunciation adopted; it’s the same name, and it can be a boy’s or a girl’s, I’m just using a slightly different spelling to distinguish it)
Caoileann - KWEE-lawn
Bréainann - BRAY-nan (the accented vowel tends to ‘swallow’ the following vowel, and actually accented vowels tend to be rather similar to portuguese!)
Áine - AW-nye (you put the i sound on the second syllable due to something called the Y glide)
Naoise – NEE-sah
Etain - EY-deen (Ts are read as D in most cases)
Sédanta - SHAY-dan-tah
Seán is exactly like everyone complains about Sean Bean not rhyming. Seán is actually the phonetic version of John in any case. As I said above, the accented vowel swallows the other vowel – hence WHY Sean Bean doesn’t rhyme
Gráinne - GRAW-nye (Y glide again)
Caitríona - Cah-THREE-nah (please make the TH sound in the middle, I’ve seen so many Caitríonas complaining that nobody gets that sound right lmao)
Cailín - cah-LEEN
Aoife - EE-feh
Sláine - SLAW-nye (you see the pattern with the Y glide)
Séamus - SHAY-mus (exactly as you expect, sometimes the accent actually does help understanding the word!)
Ríchael - REE-chael (the CH is similar to the scots CH sound, like in loch ness)
One of the coolest names for me (I have it as only a girl who kind shows up and leaves but) is Bláithne. Pronounced blaw-HEE-ne. It’s super poetic
After this, I swear you start seeing a pattern. Laoise, for example, is LEE-seh, much like Naoise. Réamonn is RAY-mon. Padraig is PATRICK (PAW-dreeg)
I think the clan names are trickier huehue. The most complicated one is Ó Maolomhnaigh so I’ll stick with the anglicanization: it’s O’Molony. It’s easier to stick to that reading.
Ó Conchobhair is O’Conor, but it’s slightly different and there are several ways of spelling it. I prefer COON-oh-wer.
Ó Conghaile - Kun-WEE-leh
Mac Gealaigh would be either GAW-lee or GYA-lee (I’ve seen both)
Mac Craith - Cray, that’s it lmao
I think those are all (and more) I’ve mentioned so far??

“The peaceful existence of Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) in the Shadow Mountains of 1983 is burned to the ground when a deranged religious sect fixates on Mandy (Andrea Riseborough), the love of his life and, as is soon made very evident, a significant grounding force in his universe. Things deteriorate into a tranced-out nightmare of insect venom, hard drugs and broken-minded delirium as Red journeys into hell in order to avenge the woman he once lived for. Blood will flow in rivers. Worlds will collapse unto themselves.”
    Nightmare Cinema
Director: Alejandro Brugués, Joe Dante, Mick Garris, Ryuhei Kitamura, David Slade Writer: Sandra Becerril, Alejandro Brugués, Lawrence C. Connolly, Mick Garris, Richard Christian Matheson, David Slade Cast: Maurice Benard, Richard Chamberlain, Annabeth Gish, Elizabeth Reaser, Mickey Rourke
“At a forgotten, haunted bijou, a group of strangers have assembled to watch a series of macabre vignettes unspooled by the mysterious Projectionist (Mickey Rourke). Like the best anthology films (DEAD OF NIGHT, CREEPSHOW, TRICK ‘R TREAT), the stories’ tones range from truly deep, dark, psychological, demented horror to ones with a lighter, satirical spin. Witness a ghost story that will chill you to the bone; an exorcism story guaranteed to make your head spin; a B&W descent into clinical madness; a plastic surgery gone horrifyingly awry; and a cabin-in-the-woods slasher ditty with a unique twist you’ll never see coming.”
    Under the Silver Lake
Director: David Robert Mitchell Writer: David Robert Mitchell Cast: Andrew Garfield, Topher Grace, Riley Keough, Zosia Mamet
“Silver Lake, Los Angeles. The city of angels. The dream factory where it’s all too easy to lose contact grasp of Earth and see nothing but stars… Take for example Sam (Andrew Garfield), a prototypical slacker in his mid-thirties, without ambition… though he does have an unpredictable temperament, a penchant for voyeurism, and an unhealthy obsession with pop culture. When a mysterious neighbor (Riley Keough) appears in the sights of his binoculars, then disappears overnight without a trace, the first-class geek cannot help but investigate – possessed, somehow, by the eternal spirit of the countless detectives who stalked the hot asphalt of LA before him. But a Bogart he is not. Sam’s unorthodox methods very quickly leave him confounded; through the looking glass and into the heart of a strange city where dog killers, owl-women, aspiring actresses and gurus rub shoulders, among other high-society demiurges pulling the strings of an entire culture…”
    Terrified
Director: Demián Rugna Writer: Demián Rugna Cast: Ariel Chavarría, Maximiliano Ghione, Norberto Gonzalo, Elvira Onetto
“The lives of three neighbours in Argentina are turned upside down following a series of violent deaths in the area. For retiring inspector Funes, what was supposed to be an easy case suddenly takes a strange turn and he finds himself dealing with more than he can handle. Paranormal experts are brought in to assist in investigating what they believe to be haunted houses, where they will be tested by an evil the likes of which they have never encountered. As the night goes on and chaos is unleashed upon them, nothing, and no one, can be trusted.”
    Tales From The Hood 2
Directed: Darin Scott, Rusty Cundieff Writer: Darin Scott, Rusty Cundieff Cast: Keith David, Alexandria DeBerry, Bill Martin Williams, Bryan Batt, Lou Beatty Jr., Martin Bradford, Kendrick Cross
“Horror is back in the hood! The sequel to the groundbreaking original film TALES FROM THE HOOD reunites executive producer Spike Lee (Honorary Academy Award® winner) and writers/directors/producers Rusty Cundieff and Darin Scott for an all-new gripping, horrifying and oftentimes devilishly comical anthology. Keith David stars as a contemporary Mr. Simms to tell bloodcurdling stories about lust, greed, pride and politics through tales with demonic dolls, possessed psychics, vengeful vixens and historical ghosts. Mr. Simms’s haunting stories will make you laugh… while you scream.“
    The Witch In The Window
Director: Andy Mitton Writer: Andy Mitton Cast: Arija Bareikis, Alex Draper, Greg Naughton, Carol Stanzione, Charlie Tacker
“Divorced dad Simon (Alex Draper) brings his 12-year-old son, Finn (Charlie Tacker) out to Vermont to help him renovate an old house he recently purchased. Used to the speed of New York City, Finn has an impossible time slowing down to a smalltown pace, and he’s disappointed before even getting there. So is Simon (“I guess I was hoping I would catch you on the 12 side of 12, instead of the 13 side of 12”). Afflicted with a rare medical condition in which there’s a literal hole in his heart, Simon, ever resourceful, does what he can to make things good as he and his son attempt to repair what’s broken. Soon, a series of nonsensically terrifying happenings occur, nightmarish and incomprehensible. It becomes clear that they aren’t alone in the house. That there is more work to be done than either could be capable of grasping. That death is a partially living state. And that they are in a very special kind of danger.“
  The Dark
Director: Justin P. Lange Writer: Justin P. Lange Cast: Nadia Alexander, Karl Markovics, Toby Nichols
“Once upon a dark, dark time, there was a girl, lonely, undead and bloodthirsty. Behind her a dark, dark past – a curse. Hidden in the dark, dark woods, she tirelessly haunts her childhood home. Mina (Nadia Alexander) is a damaged soul, and tears to pieces anyone who dares enter her hunting ground. When she meets Alex (Toby Nichols), a disfigured and blind boy, brought to her by mysterious circumstances, her animalistic cannibal instincts seem to strangely fade away. As this uncanny friendship grows, little by little, both of these lost children learn how to reach out to the hints of light left within.”
    Cold Skin
Director: Xavier Gens Writer: Jesus Olmo, Eron Sheean Cast: Aura Garrido, David Oakes, Ray Stevenson
“In the early years of the 20th century, a young man (David Oakes) takes over the responsibility of surveying the weather of a secluded island in the Antarctic. Hoping for isolation and time for self-reflection, he instead finds a crazed and weathered person named Gruner, played by genre favourite Ray Stevenson (DEXTER, THOR, DIVERGENT). Gruner quickly reveals that there is more to this island than meets the eye and that below the icy depths, a terrible scourge lurks. The extent of Gruner’s madness slowly becomes more and more pronounced as his bloodlust for the creatures becomes apparent. Struggling for survival, the surveyor must choose between a madman and a legion of creatures he does not fully understand.”
    Heavy Trip
Director: Juuso Laatio, Jukka Vidgren Writer: Juuso Laatio, Jari Olavi Rantala, Aleksi Puranen, Jukka Vidgren Cast: Johannes Holopainen, Minka Kuustonen, Ville Tiihonen
“Life has its downsides in a small, northern Finnish town. The local bros give long-haired, leather-clad Turo a tough time, and his job at the mental hospital is literally shitty. His crush on Miia at the flower shop is thwarted by the tacky lounge singer Jouni, and his band jams in the back of a reindeer slaughterhouse. In the plus column for Turo, well… there’s the band, even if these black-metal true-believers have never gigged in all their 12 years together (Turo’s concealed but crippling stage fright hasn’t helped). A miraculous crack at a major metal festival in Norway jumpstarts the quartet’s dreams, and Impaled Rektum set out on a metallic mission that will make them confront not only doubts, detours and difficulties, but also Vikings in longships (plus an elf), graverobbing, Swedish rocket launchers and wolverine-wrestling (dangerous… and awkward!).“
    Dans La Brume
Director: Daniel Roby Writer: Guillaume Lemans, Jimmy Bemon, Mathieu Delozier Cast: Romain Duris, Olga Kurylenko, Fantine Harduin, Michel Robin, Anne Gaylor
“Mathieu (Romain Duris, DE BATTRE MON COEUR S’EST ARRÊTÉ) and Anna (Olga Kurylenko, QUANTUM OF SOLACE) are the parents of a girl (Fantine Harduin, HAPPY END) who suffers from a genetic disorder forcing her to live in a hermetic box that filters the air. This already vulnerable existence becomes even more precarious on the day Paris is hit by an earthquake, and then filled with a mysterious toxic gas that seems to come from below ground. Only those hiding on the higher floors and rooftops of buildings survive, but they are left stranded, without any resources. Wanting to check that their daughter remains safe in her “bubble”, Mathieu and Anna will have to face the fog.”
The Man Who Killed Hitler And Then Bigfoot
Director: Robert Krzykowski Writer: Robert Krzykowski Cast: Sam Elliott, Caitlin FitzGerald, Ron Livingston, Aidan Turner
‘The year is 1987. Calvin Barr (a too-great-for-words Sam Elliott) is not a violent man. But he is more than capable of violence if sufficiently provoked. What many don’t realize about the thoughtful, elderly bloke regularly seen at the neighbourhood tavern is that he’s a legendary WW2 veteran who many years ago assassinated Adolf Hitler, an incredible secret that he’s frustratingly unable to share. One day, just as he’s coming to terms with rounding out his life, Calvin gets a visit from the FBI and the RCMP. They know what he’s done, and what he can be capable of. They have a mission for him. After discovering that it harbours a disease capable of eradicating humanity… they need him to take out Bigfoot.”
