Tumblr media Tumblr media
Director: Yan Dingxian Screenwriter: Li Keruo / Yan Dingxian Starring: Shang Hua / Yang Wenyuan / Chen Yanhua Genre: Animation / Fantasy / Adventure Country/Region of Production: Mainland China Language: Mandarin Date: 1981 Duration: 45 minutes Also known as: Sun Wukong secretly eats ginseng fruit / 孙悟空偷吃人参果 / Ginseng Fruit IMDb: tt2572226 Type: Retelling
Summary:
It is said that the four masters and disciples of Tang Monk came to Wuzhuang Temple in Wanshou Mountain. At that time, Zhen Yuanzi, the master of the temple, went to Yuanshi Tianzun to listen to the sermon and listen to the Dharma. He had already asked his disciples Qingfeng and Mingyue to entertain the eminent monks from the East with ginseng fruits. This ginseng fruit is a rare delicacy in the world. One bite can prolong your life and make you immortal. However, Tang Monk saw that the ginseng fruit was in the shape of a baby and refused to eat it, which made Qingfeng Mingyue laugh. Zhu Bajie coveted the delicious taste of ginseng fruit, so he encouraged his senior brother Sun Wukong to enter the garden and steal it. This move caused a dispute between Qingfeng, Mingyue, and the Tang Monk's apprentices. Sun Wukong became so angry that he even broke the ginseng fruit tree, which caused a series of disasters.
This film is adapted from a story in Journey to the West, one of the four classic Chinese classics, and won the Special Award at the Second Manila International Film Festival in the Philippines in 1983.

JTTW Chapter 24 Thoughts
Chapter 24 for the @journeythroughjourneytothewest Reading Group!
Ah, the beginning of the Arc the movie Monkey King Reborn is based on! It will be very delightful to spot the similarities for myself!
But first we have to finish the previous trial. I really don’t like how the emphasise is kind of put on women as being tempters. Especially when the exemplary lady is explicitly stated to be sixteen, that is a child!
Still not a fan how they put so much ridicule on Zhu Bajie as well when they equally pressured him into the whole situation.
Hm Sun Wukong schooling his Shifu. We love the communal grandpa dispersing his knowledge.
And here are the two sillies! I’ll take it in immortal years they’re closer to being old tweens or young teens. That’s the feeling I get from them at least.
Ah, teaching the kids that uhm, actually just make friends with people if they’re nice, religion should not be of any importance there. There are some really good lessons to be taken away from this novel.
One could say they are… Home Alone.
I wonder if the sight of the Daoist Abbey makes Sun Wukong melancholic with thoughts of his first Shifu.
Clear Breeze, I most certainly prefer the J. F. Jenner and movie’s translation and technically also the German translation of Pure Wind, and Bright Moon are notably nicer in the novel than the adaptation. They only get rude when they actually have been wronged. Just looking at their movie counterparts, these aren’t the same kids.

Plants you say? Now don’t mind if I look them up! Spoilers this turned out a bit of a difficult ordeal so take all of this with a grain of salt.
For accuracy, spinach yes and celery yes.
Mare’s tail… maybe? My search came up with Beta vulgaris aka Chard/Swiss Chard instead, though both plants fall under the term vulgaris in their scientific name and are plausible options as they are both native to Western Asia. Since it is a vegetable garden for people however I might be inclined to personally go with Chard, in part also because I have eaten that vegetable before and it is not only quite tasty but also nutritional.
Tumblr media
Funfact in German Chard is called Mangold, definitely sounds like a plant an immortal would eat. But again that’s just personal bias, in reality it could still be either.
Back to the list, I have no clue where beet comes from in this line, but ginger yes.
Seaweed no. It seems to actually be moss of some kind and I looked up as to possibly why it’s in this garden. Indeed certain types of moss are used for medicinal or culinary purposes in some cultures. But don’t go out and just eat moss you find in your garden! A lot of mosses are toxic and no good for eating, so be careful!
Bamboo shoot yes and melon yes. Squash, more like gourd, but technically yes. Watercress no, my research came up with wild rice instead, but watercress is still native to Asia as well.
Now for this next line I would like to remark that there is some potential difference in the Chinese Original. Chive technically yes the Google Translate said just onion though, garlic yes, coriander yes, leek and scallion technically yes though if the characters for those two are put together the translator says they translate to chives instead.
The second paragraph I will not touch as that one is more complex.
The local Tudi really tends to be the living loremaster, in a way that makes a lot of sense in world too, something I can always appreciate.
Heh, Sun Wukong doing a little trickshot with the mallet. Not that it worked, but he tried.
Sha Wujing being the good little brother getting roped into shenanigans by his older brothers. The feeling of found family is strong with this one.
At the end I would like to shill the movie a bit as I really like that one and it does make for quite a good companion piece for this Arc. It also has one of the best Sha Wujing designs in my opinion.

@songlanweek2023 Day 3: Laughter / Relaxation
Sword and fuchen forms are a fine way to loosen up! Love the fact that we get to see Song Lan be proficient in two (2) different weapons and also capable of dual-wielding onscreen…. What a well-rounded young man

Thought I'd expand on the 'Sun Crow's Family Tradition' I mentioned before - Not only is it just kinda sweet, but it also connects the whole family through their designs! And maybe explains some things once I post all their designs in the future! :DD If anyone else is still curious on more stuff, I'm so happy to answer questions lolol ------- Have a lovely night all! <33

whats MinSI?
The Ministry of Supernatural Investigation is the most chaotic bunch of bastards in a Ministry you will never see actually ingame because it is a RP faction @gift-of-astralaria and I made up!
The ministry focuses on the daily safekeeping of the New Kaineng and Canthan’s citizens from supernatural dangers such as hostile ghosts, demons, the unexplainable dangers that lurk in every tragic backstory - while staying low profile as possible (order of whispers but cooler)
What the agents of MinSI do on daily basis in New Kaineng:
be gay
do crime in the big city (behind the MinSI’s back)
fight demons, ghosts, trauma and paperwork
certainly be not lawful good ministry agents
agents of division 2:
Yue Qingfeng - Brave leader of this team, despite her pitiful selfworth. Cries easily under stress while carrying prowess and will of a martial arts heroine in combat. The kindest heart of the team.
Vellichor Quill - Toxicologist, cold bastard with a backstabbing vibe, certified freak in the street with the most brain in the team and cunning pragmatism.
Adonis Chrysalism - Face and diplomat of the team. A generally kind person who speaks more smoothly than is healthily advised. Will talk himself into shit - and possibly out. @/gift-of-astralaria
Zhao Xifeng - A blunt goth woman who cares less for  societal norm and more for her ghostly allies. While she can appreciate the living, the dead and their peace are her priority. @/gift-of-astralaria

Lovely acoustic tune, and the solo viola is gorgeous!    =D
The last time we featured this venerable band, they were still called 蘇打綠 Sodagreen, but for a few years, they’ve gone by 魚丁糸 Oaeen. (and that is the current fb page)  They just dropped a bunch of clips today, and this may be a re-recording of an early album? (Spotify has it as a 2-disc release HERE) There are so many social media links and music releases, it’s confusing if you are not already a diligent fan.  XD
According to the Sodagreen Wikipedia page, the band formed in 2003, and the members have stayed the same since 2003: 吳青峰 Wu Qing-Feng (Greeny)-lead vocals, piano, harmonica, accordion, percussion, flute.  謝馨儀 Hsieh Shin-Yi (Claire)-bass guitar, piano, guitar, guzheng/zither, backing vocals, percussion. 劉家凱 Liu Jia-Kai (Kay)-guitar, backing vocals. 史俊威 Shih Jun-Wei (Wei)-drums, percussion, guitar, harmonica, backing vocals. 何景揚 Ho Jing-Yang (A Fu)-guitar, ukulele, backing vocals. 龔鈺祺 Kung Yu-Chi (A Gong)-piano, viola, keyboards, backing vocals
Singer *Wu Qingfeng 吳青峰 is also a solo artist. (*aka 吳青峰 Qing Feng, aka Greeny Wu 吳青峯)
Anyway, I’ll give you the links and let you sort out who’s who and what’s what, LOL. Links: Instagram,  蘇打綠 Sodagreen Spotify,  Sodagreen YouTube (has Oaeen releases also),  魚丁糸 Oaeen Spotify,  吳青峰 Qing Feng YouTube,  吳青峰 Qing Feng Spotify,  吳青峰 Qing Feng Instagram, Sodagreen Wikipedia page,  Weibo
Here they are at the 2021 Golden Melody Awards with a medley of tunes:

Chapter 24, Mo Huaikong spots Wen Kexing and senses that something's up witht that one.
Zhao Jing was nearly out of his mind with worry when the two of them brought Zhang Chengling back. He pulled at Zhang Chengling to ask this or that. This Zhao Jing was a sly codger, Wen Kexing observed, yet he was not indifferent to his old friend’s son. So Wen Kexing turned to make his silent exit—but just as he did so, he felt someone’s stare lock onto him. Wen Kexing halted. When he turned his head, he met a foreboding gaze—ominous, with the air of a mad dog that wanted to pounce on him. Wen Kexing saw Cao Weining speaking to his observer with every courtesy. This, he guessed, was his shishu—the old pricky good-for-nothing from the Qingfeng Sword sect who had made a name for himself. Mo Huaikong. Mo Huaikong listened to Cao Weining—who was chattering his ear off—and, following Cao Weining’s pointing finger, looked in Wen Kexing’s direction. He first felt that this person looked a bit familiar. Then those fathomless eyes made him apprehensive. Yet try as he might, he could not remember.  He was stunned. Just at that moment, he saw Wen Kexing’s mouth turn up at the corners to smile at him. He heard Cao Weining lament the profound love between this and another man, and he couldn’t hold back a snort. This Wen fellow, he thought, was bad news from head to toe.
(TL by Lianzi)
I wanted to make it a bit absurd; MHK thinking that "he's bad news" and then he looks like THIS - you don't say!! Earlier today, as I was imagining some scenes of TYK, I started focusing on WKX's mannerisms and how he's acting with ZZS and other people, the differences, and how he's perceived. I feel like book!WKX is hinted at being extremely weird and having this disagreeable, menacing aura, and showing that through these striking glimpses into how many would perceive him is quite fun.
I initially made another version, where he's not smiling, but then reread and realised that the corners of his mouth *do* rise up. I think the scene would have absolutely worked with a very lowkey, smooth looking WKX too, but making it over-the-top was just too funny, and I like to think that WKX does look that threatening a lot of the time. The combo between OBVIOUSLY BAD WKX and ZZS' ridiculous hobo persona is very tasty, imo.
The other version:

*note, the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often there will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
