Washington: 2024 Sugar Bowl Champions
Tumblr media
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The remarkable comeback story of Michael Penix Jr. is a victory away from a perfect ending for Washington.
Penix passed for 430 yards and two touchdowns, and the Huskies held off Texas 37-31 in the Sugar Bowl on Monday night to advance to the College Football Playoff title game, earning both the sixth-year quarterback with two surgically repaired knees and the beleaguered Pac-12 a chance to go out a champion.
The second-ranked Huskies (14-0) will face No. 1 Michigan next Monday night in Houston with a 21-game winning streak, looking for their first national championship since 1991 and the Pac-12's first since Southern California in 2004.
Washington is one of 10 schools fleeing the Pac-12 for other Power Five conferences next season, with the Huskies headed to join Michigan in the Big Ten. The conference is not going away, but its days as a potential football power are likely done.
But first, the final season of the four-team playoff before expansion to 12 in 2024 comes down to a Pac-12-Big Ten matchup, just like the first when Ohio State beat Oregon.
"Huskie Nation stand up," Penix told the UW crowd in the postgame trophy ceremony. "We goin' to the natty!"
No. 3 Texas (12-2) had four shots at the end zone after getting to the Washington 12 with 15 seconds left, but Quinn Ewers missed on the last three passes. The final throw was a fade to Adonai Mitchell that was knocked away by Washington's Elijah Jackson.
"Those guys are the most resilient guys I have ever been around," Washington coach Kalen DeBoer said.
In Texas' first CFP appearance and final football game as a member of the Big 12 before it goes to the Southeastern Conference, Ewers passed for 318 yards and a touchdown. But it wasn't enough against Penix and his array of talented receivers.
"They were a second away from playing for a national championship," Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. "They should be proud of themselves. Penix got hot and (Washington) made some big plays down the field."
Penix spent his first four college seasons at Indiana, suffering three season-ending injuries, one to each knee and one to his throwing shoulder.
When his former offensive coordinator at Indiana, DeBoer, took over at Washington, Penix didn't think twice before moving to Seattle, and then decided to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility and returned for a second year.
"He's been on a mission since he chose to come back, and a lot of the other guys followed his lead," DeBoer said
The left-hander stayed healthy and blossomed into a star, the Heisman Trophy runner-up this year, and now has a chance to win a national championship after another brilliant performance.
"It was the tough times. I feel like everything I've been through built me for this," Penix said.
Penix went 29 for 38 with no turnovers. He completed 12 straight at one point, the longest on-target streak in the CFP's 10-year history.
And he did it attacking down field as usual. He completed six passes of at least 20 yards, connecting with Rome Odunze six times for 125 yards and Ja'Lynn Polk five times for 122.
It was in some ways a perfect CFP semifinal for the last season before massive changes in college football: two teams switching conferences next season, led by star quarterbacks who transferred in.
A wild first half included a 77-yard connection with Polk on Penix's second pass of the game, Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy II plunging into the end zone for a 1-yard TD run, a Penix-to-Polk TD pass when the receiver tipped the ball to himself and the Longhorns capping the second quarter with a long touchdown drive to tie it at 21-all at intermission.
There was a fourth-and-1 stop by Texas of Washington deep in Longhorns territory, which didn't deter DeBoer from going for a fourth-and-1 at his own UW 33, and converting.
Penix had 255 yards in the first half alone, and then kept it rolling on the first drive of the second half, throwing a dart down the middle to Jalen McMillen for a 19-yard score.
Washington added two field goals by Grady Gross to take a 34-21 lead early in the fourth quarter. Holding the Huskies to field goals kept Texas in the game, and when Ewers found Mitchell, the Georgia transfer with two national titles, for a 1-yard score with 7:23 left, it was a one-possession game.
The Superdome sounded like Darrell K. Royal Stadium east, with Texas fans easily outnumbering the visitors from the Pacific Northwest.
Penix calmly went back to work, hitting Odunze over the shoulder for 32 yards down the sideline to set up a first-and-goal that led to the third field goal of the day for Gross, a former walk-on who was put on scholarship after hitting a walk-off winner in the Apple Cup.
That put Washington up 37-28 with 2:40 left, and had its purple-clad fans doing its best to drown out the Longhorns with a "Let's go Huskies!" chant.
Texas kicked a field goal with 1:09 left cut the lead to six. Washington recovered an onside kick, but couldn't kill the clock. Texas flew down the field and had an improbable comeback in sight.
"Just was looking to give my guys an opportunity to go make a play," Ewers said of his final throws. At the end of the day, that's all you can really do.
Washington came through in the clutch — again.
"They've done it all year, coming up with big-time stops in big-time moments," Penix said.
The Huskies' last 10 victories have all been decided by 10 points or fewer. The close games have brought doubters.
"We're always disrespected, always made the underdogs," said defensive end Bralen Trice, another upperclassman who returned this season to make title run.
THE TAKEAWAY
Texas: Came in with a vaunted defensive line led by All-America defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat and second-team All-American Murphy. They were tough to run against, as usual, but they didn't get much pressure on Penix through an offensive line that was named the best in the country. Throughout the week both sides seemed a little tired of talking about the line matchup when the Huskies had the ball. Ultimately, the Huskies' big guys came out on top, not allowing a sack.
Washington: On the Huskies' final offensive play as they tried to burn clock, star running back Dillon Johnson was shaken up, which stopped the clock and gave Texas an extra 30 seconds or so for their own drive. There was no word on Johnson's status for the matchup with Michigan.
UP NEXT
Texas: Will Ewers be back for the Longhorns or is it Arch Manning time in Austin? Stay tuned.
Washington: The Huskies are 5-8 all-time against Michigan, including 2-2 in Rose Bowls.

With a grand opening on September 4th, Ballard's newest watering hole, Yonder Cider and Bale Breaker Brewing invite you to visit their joint taproom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Press Release
SEATTLE (August 24, 2021) – Yonder Cider and Bale Breaking Brewing Co are excited to announce the much-anticipated grand opening of its joint taproom in the heart of Seattle’s Ballard Distillery District, scheduled for Saturday, September 4! Located at 826 NW 49th Street, doors will open at noon at the expansive new location, bringing 32 taps of Washington-made beer and cider together under one roof.
“This taproom has been in the works for nearly a year and we are so excited to finally share what we’ve created with everyone,” said Caitlin Braam, founder of Yonder Cider. “Beyond great beverages, we believe we’ve created a space that is interactive, exciting and the perfect place to experience what Eastern Washington has to offer.”
“Sharing this taproom between our two brands means we are able to showcase nearly the entire breadth of beverages made in Washington state,” said Meghann Quinn, co-founder of Bale Breaker. “From beer and cider to hard seltzer and eventually wine, craft beverage enthusiasts will be able to experience and explore it all in one space!”
Showcasing the best of apples and hops grown in the state, the new taproom boasts more than 6,200 square feet of outdoor space and a spacious shared taproom. On-site rotating food trucks, firepits, a dedicated retail space, mural from local artist Jennifer Ament and more are all part of the property’s extensive six-month remodel. Offering an exceptional lineup of year round, seasonal and specialty releases from both brands, the two buildings on site will also house small-batch production for both Yonder and Bale Breaker. Future plans include outdoor movies, cider and beer education classes, joint releases and so much more.
This joint taproom is also the first of its kind. As of now, cideries and breweries alone cannot share a tasting room in Washington state. However, thanks to a new bill passed in June of 2020, distilleries can share their tasting rooms with wineries and breweries. To make the shared tasting room possible, the founders of Yonder and Bale Breaker started a distillery together called Wise Fool Spirits.  The distillery will act as R&D for spirits produced using products from the two brands. Yonder and Bale Breaker will also be releasing two collaborations as part of the grand opening: East Out West, a raspberry pink grapefruit kettle sour blended with Porter’s Perfection apples, and a hopped version of Yonder’s popular blackberry cider, Palisades.
Upon opening, hours for the Yonder and Bale Breaker Ballard taproom will be Tuesday – Thursday from 3-9pm, Friday and Saturday from 12-10, and Sunday from 12-9pm. The taproom will be closed on Mondays. This new taproom – which is both dog- and kid-friendly – is in addition to Bale Breaker’s Yakima taproom, as well as Yonder’s ‘Yonder Bar’ retail space in Seattle.
Follow along on Instagram at @yondercider and @balebreaker for sneak peeks of the new space and additional details as the date grows closer. A final tap list will also be available at bbycballard.com in the coming week.

About Bale Breaker Brewing Co. Crafting fresh-off-the-farm brews from the middle of a hop field, Bale Breaker Brewing Company is a family-owned brewery located in the heart of the Yakima Valley. Hops are in the family’s DNA: the great-grandparents of sibling-owners Meghann Quinn, Kevin Smith, and Patrick Smith first planted hops in the Yakima Valley in 1932, the year before Prohibition ended. Over four generations, their love of hops has evolved into a passion for craft beer. Today, Meghann, Kevin, Patrick along with Meghann’s husband, Kevin Quinn, operate a 30-barrel brewhouse and a 27,000 square foot facility surrounded by their family’s hop fields, crafting seven year-round canned beers including the widely celebrated Topcutter IPA, and are distributed throughout Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. For more information, follow Bale Breaker on Facebook and Instagram (@balebreaker), or online at balebreaker.com.

ABOUT
(PARENTAL NEGLECT & FOSTER CARE TW) Was born as Brandon Lewis to a teen mom in Seattle who loved him, but was unable to provide for him so he was taken from her care shortly before his third birthday. He bounced around foster homes in the Seattle area for two years, always either going alarmingly silent or lashing out - never any in between. The only person who ever loved him was no longer there, and he spent his childhood craving it and being angry that it was taken from him.
He landed in the home of Michael and Theresa Winter when he was five, and he continued his usual behavior and expected that he’d be taken back to social services but instead of frustration and contempt, the Winter family treated him with compassion and forgiveness. He went to a child psychologist to help with his childhood trauma and was officially adopted two years after staying with the Winters. Changed his name to Brandon Winter at this point.
Excelled in school, got accepted to Boston University for college. Was excited to go until he found out Lara was pregnant, considered deferring acceptance but his parents encouraged him not to. Missed Mason’s birth due to his freshman orientation being that weekend, still feels guilty about it RIP. But college was fun otherwise. Spent 5 years there in a combined BA/MS Computer Science program, getting many job offers after he graduated and stayed in Boston. Got paid really well because tech industry, was able to return to CH twice a year to visit his family. He video called them all the time while he was in Boston.
Slowly began to realize that he missed Crescent Harbor once he fell into the habit of doing nothing but working and coming home to an empty apartment. After looking into his opportunities in Seattle, he resigned from his company in Boston and returned home a year ago. Has since been working for a software company in Seattle, commuting to the office twice a week and working remotely otherwise. Spends some of his time actually working from home, other times he’s at the coffee shops around Crescent Harbor.
In the process of getting licensed to foster a child, something he couldn’t do easily in Boston. Owns a 3 bedroom home in Bywater Park and just waiting to complete his training. Whether he ends up fostering to adopt or simply providing a temporary safe haven, he hopes to give another child the opportunities that Michael and Theresa have given him, as they allowed him to be the success story that is Brandon Winter.
MISCELLANEOUS
Loves the idea of having a pet in theory, but doesn’t want to pose any complication when it comes to allergies of his future foster children so decided against it. Would 10/10 volunteer at the animal shelter or pet sit for a friend, though.
Hates Apple products, will go on for hours about the superiority of PC and Android
Has never travelled outside of the United States and Canada, but really wants to. He could afford it, he just never actually got around to it.
Likes being outdoors, but only for a limited amount of time. Hates camping or anything that involves becoming one with nature - he likes to set some boundaries in this relationship.
Had not driven a car in 8 years until his return to Crescent Harbor last year, doesn’t mind doing it but also misses having reliable public transportation
Very fitting for a man with his last name, winter is Brandon’s favorite season. However, he only likes it when he can stay indoors all day. Don’t even think about asking him to do winter sports.
On that note, he’s pretty active and goes to the gym almost every day. If he doesn’t, he’s usually outside running.
The college kid in him will attend any event once there’s free food involved
Always willing to help with any laptop or phone issues you have, but can get annoying about it - he really gets into his work
Gives Mason any tech freebies he gets from work that he doesn’t want

BASICS
Name: Lara Christina Winter.
Gender/Pronouns: cisfemale, (she/her).
Date of Birth: April 13th, 1987.
Age: 33.
Hometown: Seattle, Washington.
Length of time in Crescent Harbor: 33 years.
Neighborhood: Bywater Park.
Occupation: Social Media Manager.
Faceclaim: Satomi Ishihara.
BIOGRAPHY (trigger warnings: implied drug abuse, implied alcoholism, overdose, foster care)
“The world goes on, stupid and brutal, but I do not. Can't you see? I do not.” —Jennifer Donnelly
The Winter family have always been the exact opposite of the image their name would invoke, a family that instead of being frosty and detached, were a warm and loving bunch with as many troubling trials and mishaps as any family next door. ‘There is no such thing as perfection’ Mrs. Winter would remind her children, a mixed bunch of adopted and foster kids that belonged as much as her biological children did. ‘But what matters is that you try.’ Mr. Winter would finish. And though such words of encouragement were only meant to help and not hinder, Lara Christina would not be first nor last to realise that their name isn’t inspired by the literal cold, but the ceaseless strength of such a season that endured, even in the most silent, most dread-filled moments.
Lara was one of the middle children of the Winter brood, identifiable by the blonde hair almost always set in braids with her cornflower blue eyes perpetually set to the distance. With a penchant for adventure it was she who would be the last child inside for dinner with dirt on her hands and knees and leaves in her pocket, she who by the time she was fourteen would steal weekends to stay with friends or adventuring into the city, even taking up hiking eventually when she convinced her elder siblings that she could keep up with them.
Her parents used to say that her restlessness would lead her right out of Crescent Harbor one day, and by the time she was sixteen she had dreams of walking through the halls of Versailles, of backpacking through Italy, and taking a photo outside of Buckingham Palace (and maybe even meeting Prince Harry), maps and brochures taped to her side of the bedroom she shared with her siblings. There was no question about it: their adventurer was made for a world beyond Crescent Harbor, and she had every intention of making her dreams come true.
However, those same dreams had not included a child by her high school sweetheart at a young age. They’d talked about it of course (it, being what they wanted to do in the future), getting out of town and being able to travel as they grew older, maybe even applying to a university out of the state and studying for a semester out of the country. But Lara had fallen pregnant over New Years break her junior year, and early into her senior year of high school, they’d welcomed their little Mason Hawthorne into the world.
It should be known that they’d both tried to do the right things. Not only for themselves, but for their infant son. Without either of their parents’ support, they moved in together, trying to balance raising their son between Quinn dropping out taking on multiple jobs to keep them afloat and Lara working part time and staying in school. There was nothing easy about it. Lara can’t remember how many times she’d cried, still nearly a child herself as she tried to settle their son down for the night so she could trudge her way through a calculus assignment and Quinn could rest. But what mattered at the end of the day was that they made it through each day, and that every day they tried even more to give as good as they could. As her parents had instilled in her, it wasn’t that they had a perfect life. But that they put in the effort.
What she didn’t expect was how difficult it all could become; how being a young adult, a young mother would test her mettle. They weren’t perfect, but they were happy. Or, at least, she tried to convince themselves they were until the fighting had become too much and seemingly out of nowhere, she stopped trying temporarily. Lara had left with their son on her hip and returned home. Their adventurer, their dreamer returned to her safe place to land with her head down and tears in her eyes. Her dreams, hers and Quinn’s promises had not only frayed at the edges, but finally cracked like a mirror. Reflected in her gaze were those ideas shattered. So she’d begin again, under the safety of her parents’ roof, with the help of her siblings as she slowly picked herself up: she enrolled in a local college, worked full time — and in a way that only a Winter could, Lara tried, again and again with Quinn.
Perhaps a better girlfriend would have stuck it out; a better partner would have been able to support him better for his sake and hers and Mason’s. In a way, she will never forgive herself for not being able to do so; as regrettably with each relapse, after every promise that he was clean and stable and better for them and their son was broken, that same shattered yet enduring love wore away with the sea that lapped at Crescent Harbor’s shores. His overdose at the age of twenty-six, a scene she (much to her horror) had discovered with their son, was the last straw. After being raised to not stop trying, to endure and persevere, to not prize perfection but the effort put forward, Lara stopped entirely.
Instead of attempting again to try and raise their son together as a family, to heal what was so obviously fractured between the both of them, Lara Christina Winter stepped away, for once embodying the unforgiving, frosty invocation of her surname. She looked critically at her jobs and career trajectory, dedicated herself to her son: her dreams would no longer be based on a family of three, but two; the trips and little escapes from the monotony of life would be for her and Mason to enjoy. She’d give their son the stability a child would need, a soft place to land if he fell, and after failing Quinn, the promise on her own life that she would never stop trying for him.
In the next handful of years, it would be she and Mason on a trip to Disneyland and Universal Studios, to Hawaii, and after landing a new job three years ago as a social media manager for an eSports organisation based in Seattle, she’s finally been able to afford the both of them a short trip to France and Italy, and has flown with Mason to trips across the United States to attend the professional league tournaments of the video games he loves.
Although she’s finally had the adventures she’s dreamed of by the age of thirty-three (and lived many more that she could have never imagined) it’s only through her new occupation that she’s had an inkling how much she has to regain. Between her career, Mason, and still lukewarm-at-best relationship with Quinn since his last overdose, it’s been seven years of hard work without letting anyone into her life to access those same vulnerabilities and dreams that Lara had for herself. Mason is sixteen now, and the ‘what if's' of a bigger family, of having a partner or another child have popped into her mind thanks to the younger demographic of her workplace. She’s been reminded time and time again (and the reminders have now begun to come from Mason, too) that she’s still young, and still has the world of opportunities to enjoy. She has to remember she’s more than a mother and co-worker— Lara has to try for herself, too.

Seven: Chapter One
Tumblr media
Chapter One
Humans, I’ve observed, are often concerned with their appearance. It is because I was designed to integrate peacefully with them that I am where I am now.
I trace the back of my right hand over my smooth, plastic skin, right against my cheek. My soft brown hair is pulled back into a loose bun at the nape of my neck, with bangs parted down the middle falling to my jaw. My skin is pale, my eyes a bright shade of green. If you look closely enough, you can see little yellow circles around my pupils. My eyebrows are brown and softly arched, and next to the one on the right is an led-light in the shape of a circle.
When it turns green, it indicates that I am confirming something. Yellow means I am analyzing or active in some way. Red symbolizes danger or some kind of alertness. White, which I have on me now, means nothing. It shows that I am calm.
My face is well put together, but not too much. When Androids were first released, reports were made that people felt uncomfortable because the Androids were too perfect. Too symmetrical. There were allegedly a string of men who became disloyal to their partners in favor of the metal beings. Androids were recalled and modified to look more human- more realistic and uneven. After that, Androids that were considered more symmetrical were sent to sex clubs.
And so, my face is not perfect. My face is adequate, a more regular sight. I know I must be based off some human in the world, as the human mind is incapable of thinking of an entirely new face. If I ever met them, I wonder if it would feel like meeting my creator or identical twin.
I straighten out my jacket, given to me by the company that designed me: Icarus. Icarus is actually from Japan, the first country that actually successfully created functioning Androids. The United States used it’s political ties to the country to coerce them into sharing the secret to creating such intelligent machines. Soon enough, an Android plant was created in Minneapolis. The plant made maids that become so popular, other states began constructing plants as well. Then the sex clubs came. Then secretaries. Then every state had at least four factories.
I make sure I look professional enough to make a good impression on what will be my coworkers. I’ve been assigned to partner someone named Detective Everhart. From what I’ve researched on him, he is 54 years old, and very accomplished. When working with Androids in the past, there has been a record of Everhart being courteous to them. It’s a rarity, as far as I’ve observed.
With one final look of myself in the mirror, I step away and turn to the door. A human walks in right then, a female with glasses and red hair pinned back by the name of Ellie Grint. She looks me up and down before her eyes land on my led. Then she scoffs as if I’ve disgusted her and chooses a stall. Ellie even slams the door so I am sure of her disapproval.
I turn the door handle to the police lobby. Rain hits the great glass windows sharply, matched with gray skies. I politely scoot myself past people in rows of chairs to get a better look of the outside. I can see the Space Needle from here, and I begin to analyze the weather.
Weather: 100% chance of rain. 0% chance of snow. 30% chance of sun. 44% chance of winds.
Temperature: 61 degrees Fahrenheit.  16.1111 degrees Celsius.
The longer I stare at the rain outside and listen to it’s pitter patter, the more I feel my shoulders soften in my jacket. I guess I like this weather. It makes me feel especially warm and dry for being inside.
After 41 seconds, I turn away and face the front desk. Long and made of metal and wood, three uniformed officers sit at computers, sipping coffee, attending to citizens. I position myself patiently behind a couple I identify as Carl Stacy and Mary Higgins. There arms wrapped tight around each other, they finish speaking to the Officer and move along to the right. I watch their backs, curious about why so many couples are so insistent on the constant touching. I know humans have warm skin, especially when alive, but why do they consider it so intimate to hold each other? If I were to be held, it would lead to problems with my work, as I wouldn’t be able to properly move.
I step forward to the desk. The Officer- Blaise Shovelman, is concentrated on his computer. With his head down, I can’t get a more intensive read on his face, but I can analyze his hair enough to see lots of dandruff.
I wait patiently, my hands clasped behind my back again. It feels natural to do, and I’ve seen humans do it before. Officer Shovelman can feel eyes on him- perhaps eyes that aren’t human, and raises his head to meet me. His lips are parted slightly in confusion, orbs locked onto my led.
“Hello,” I greet calmly. “I’m looking for Detective Lucas Everhart.” Officer Shovelman stares at me blankly. “I have authorization,” I say.
“Ah… Detective Everhart is unavailable at the moment.”
“Then I would like to speak with Captain Armitage Ericson.”
Officer Shovelman is still stunned. I can see his heartrate has increased. Have I done something to upset him? If so, I may need to report to Adelicia about this incident. “Oh… yes- yes of course,” he stutters. His fingers type something into the keyboard choppily. Beside him, the two other officers have stopped their activities to also stare at me.
I bring my right hand up slowly as a kind of soft wave to acknowledge them. The blonde’s name is Quinn Blackwell. The other one with the slim eyes and black hair is Tom Ho-Kim.
“Ah, Captain Ericson has an appointment with an Android at eleven thirty.”
“Yes,” I nod. “That would be me.”
“Oh…” Officer Shovelman points to the right, where a glass sliding door awaits. “Just that way.”
“Thank you,” I say. I turn to the right, pretending not to know about six eyes all trained on me in disbelief.
Past the glass door, the floor turns to grey and blue tiles. Glass separates the desks, and almost ever divider has some photos or information taped to it. To the immediate left of me, up a quick flight of stairs is a room of glass. This is supposed to be Captain Ericson’s office. It must be frustrating and strange to have people be able to see you work. Though, I suppose the rows of detectives desks must create the same feeling.
“Excuse me,” I say to someone walking by. “I’m looking for Detective Everhart’s Desk.”
The man (Joseph Blake) sneers at me and bumps my shoulder has he continues on. I still myself before stumbling too much, calculating his weight must be close to 200 pounds for him to push me so hard with such little effort.
I regain my step, straighten my jacket again and brush off my button-up shirt underneath. I continue onward, deciding against walking into the bullpin. Instead, I turn up the stairs and knock softly on the Captain’s glass door. “Come in,” I see him say, focused on writing something down on his desk.
I pull the door open and step inside, quick to analyze the room.

“Hello,” I say. I detect a sharp increase in Captain Ericson’s heartrate and he jumps to look at me. “My name is Aleksandra. I’m the Android sent by Iapetus. Serial Number 742 943 189-7. I believe you were contacted by Mrs. Adelicia?”
“Jesus,” he mutters. I detect traces off coffee against his thick black mustache. “I thought it was a joke.”
I cock my head slowly, thinking of all the possible things to say. “I assure you, Mrs. Adelicia has very little sense of humor.”
“Yes,” Captain Ericson says slowly. “Yes, that’s true. Take a seat miss…”
“Aleksandra,” I repeat politely. I make my way to a chair in front of his glass desk, sitting up straight and formally as my program suggests.
“Is that… a biblical name?” Captain Ericson asks dryly, his hands moving slightly.
“Yes,” I nod. “It means ‘one who saves the warriors’.”
“Of course,” Captain Ericson swallows. “Well, you were assigned to work with Detective Everhart, weren’t you?”
“Yes. I am looking forward to working with him.”
“See, that’s going to be difficult,” the captain sighs, looking down at his fumbling fingers. “Lucas was pronounced dead this morning. There was a shootout with Androids yesterday.”
I know my led is turning yellow as I absorb the information. Accessing the public records of the nearest hospital, I search through hundreds of reports before finding the one I’m searching for. Yes, Detective Everhart died at 6:14 am, due to internal bleeding during surgery to remove bullets. He left behind a second wife, no children.
“I see,” I say, not really knowing what else to respond with. My led turns green, then goes back to white.
Captain Ericson continues to fiddle with his thumbs, leaning back in his chair as a way to show authority. I’m unsure why he feels the need to do that. Androids are strictly forbidden from having any jobs of power. I am not here to undermine him. In fact, all the articles I just read about him tell me that he’s done many things deserving of respect. He’s won a medal of valor for his work with a drug task force from the year 2035, and been praised in the local papers for commanding respect among his fellow officers.
“How about you join in on our meeting?” Captain Ericson offers. “All our officers and detectives should be here by then.”
My led goes yellow as I determine the probability of that. “Yes,” I settle upon. “That should work.” I stand up, shaking the Captain’s hand. “Thank you, sir.”
          “Ah… yes. Dismissed.”
I nod and turn on my heel, leaving his office and walking down the steps. From the corner of the room, I can see three people glaring at me and snickering. One is a uniformed officer- Mindy Cho. The other are Detectives Clarence Frost and Michael Corlecio. I knew that many humans were uncomfortable in the presence of Androids, but I guess I still wasn’t expecting all this really. The sneers, the glares, the pushes. Still, one of my core purposes is to accommodate humans. My best option is to continue to be polite to them. It’s not as if I was programmed to exactly care how the humans see me anyway, so long as it doesn’t interfere with my main mission.
I look away from the group, ignoring them. My eyes meet the door to the precincts bathroom, down a hallway beside some plants. I put my foot forward and start over there, messing with my cuffs on my jacket. Once I enter the bathroom, I note a collection of stains on the floor and pick a stall in the middle to sit in.
Androids don’t need to use the bathroom. We don’t need to eat. The only thing we need to drink is Binary Blood- a silver, thick liquid that acts as blood for Androids. It’s essentially melted metal, working to reconstruct parts we may be missing and solidify itself. When that is not needed, it works to pump throughout what is basically our veins. That is one of the many things that differs Androids from humans- we do not bleed the same color. One could even technically argue that Androids do not truly bleed.
With the highly unsanitary toilet seat down, I sit on it. Then I close my eyes. When I open them, I am back in the white room where I first began.
“You really must learn how to do this correctly,” says a low voice. I turn around, meeting Adelicia’s stern face. Today, her blond hair is pulled backwards into a very tight and professional bun. Her normal fitted pearl necklace sits along her neck, matched with a pale yellow pantsuit and skirt.
“Yes,” I say. “I will keep that in mind.” My hands clasp behind my back yet again, a pastime of mine, it seems. “Detective Everhart is no longer alive,” I tell her. “He passed away of gunshot wounds early this morning.”
“Yes,” Adelicia says gravelly. “With one of the Exceptions. What is to happen with you now?”
“Captain Ericson suggested I stay here for today’s meeting. I expect I will be reassigned to a new partner.”
I wonder about who it could be. One of the snickering ones from the corner? How would I possibly be able to complete my mission with them constantly getting in my way? It would not look good for me to ask for a different partner then, because I would appear unreasonable and catty to the humans. I can see their faces twisting into one of disapproval now.
Adelicia’s eyes narrow at me, her thin lips pulled into a stern frown. Almost like she’s disgusted. “Report back to me when you’ve received your new instructions.”
Before I can see, “yes, Adelicia”, I’m back in the bathroom stall. This isn’t the first time she’s kicked me out of her program. I don’t know how I feel about it, exactly. It makes an unsettling whir happen in my abdominal biocomponents.
I run a diagnosis. All systems appear operational. With something equivalent to a sigh, I push myself up off the seat and out of the stall, brushing past a woman who stares at me in shock.
“I didn’t know Androids had to use the bathroom…” she squeaks, her eyes wide.
I cock my head to the side. “I wasn’t using the bathroom.” Then I move past her, leaving the woman silent and stunned for some unknown reason.

2020 NFL Trade Deadline Tracker: Kwon Alexander sent to Saints, Desmond King goes to Titans
The 2020 NFL trade deadline (Tuesday, Nov. 3) is almost here. The league has already seen a few trade offers accepted, but more are on the horizon. CBS Sports is tracking all of the news and rumors and providing a one-stop shop for readers. The most recent updates are at the top.
Chargers send DB Desmond King to Titans
Los Angeles is sending Pro Bowl defensive back/kick returner Desmond King to the Titans in exchange for a sixth-round pick, according to NFL Media and ESPN. King, who is in the final year of his deal, has recorded 24 tackles and one sack in six games this season.
Saints acquire former Pro Bowler Kwon Alexander from 49ers
The New Orleans Saints are sending a conditional fifth-round pick and linebacker Kiko Alonso to San Francisco in exchange for Alexander, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The two teams play each other in Week 10. The Saints are attempting to win at all costs, while 49ers general manager John Lynch was eager to get a big contract off the books.
These two teams are still in the hunt for their respective divisions.
CBS Sports insider Jason La Canfora notes that Marvin Jones is the receiver that has been made available by Detroit but questions if Golladay might also be had at the right price.
“Things have been tense between him and the organization for quite some time; he’s been brooding over not getting a new deal, and that came to a head on Saturday when I’m told he was not at the facility when he should have been,” La Canfora wrote.
Golladay, 26, is in the final year of his rookie contract. He has recorded 20 receptions for 338 yards and two touchdowns while missing two games with an injury.
Reserve linebacker Robert Spillane has played well post-injury to Bush but Pittsburgh has seen a past without solid linebacker play and it was not pretty. They bolstered their Super Bowl contending roster in the form of veteran LB Avery Williamson. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday night that the AFC team acquired Williamson and a 2020 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round pick. Williamson goes from the NFL‘s lone win-less team to the lone undefeated team; a reversal of fortunes overnight.
Williamson has 59 tackles and one interception this season.
Saints steadfast in claim that Michael Thomas is unavailable
The potential availability of New Orleans wide receiver Michael Thomas is a rumor that has gained steam in recent weeks for whatever reason. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport says that the team has no intention of moving the star wide receiver despite punching a teammate in practice leading up to a Week 5 contest against Chargers.
A trade of Thomas would leave New Orleans with a dead cap hit of $27 million in 2020. The number dips down to $14 million following the 2022 season.
Bengals’ Carlos Dunlap sent to Seattle
The Seahawks acquired disgruntled edge rusher Carlos Dunlap from Cincinnati Wednesday in exchange for offensive lineman B.J. Finney and a 2021 seventh-round draft pick, according to SI.com’s Albert Breer. Dunlap has vocalized his unhappiness by posting the team’s defensive rotations and promoting the sale of his home on Twitter and more. Dunlap has 18 tackles, one sack and two pass deflections this season.
The Bengals may not be done at the deadline. There are a few other veterans that could be on the move. There is more on that story below. ESPN’s Adam Caplan also notes that the Seahawks may not be done acquiring pass rush help.
Ten trades that can aid contenders in a Super Bowl run
CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker mocked up ten trades that could help contenders make a Super Bowl run. Is it possible that the Patriots could be buyers and sellers ahead of the Nov. 3 deadline? Walker has the Patriots moving a big-time player while also adding a brand name wide receiver.
Not every team is a contender though and the deadline could still be interesting for lower-tier teams. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin explored one trade that each team should make in the coming days.
Everson Griffen dealt to Lions in exchange for pick
It did not take long for Dallas to find a viable suitor for edge rusher Everson Griffen. On Tuesday, it was learned that Detroit was acquiring the former Viking in exchange for a conditional 2021 sixth-round draft pick. He is due to receive roughly half of his $6 million salary from the Lions. League COVID-19 protocols prevent Griffen from playing this weekend so his first action with his new team will come Nov. 8 against … Minnesota.
Miami has turned the keys to the castle over to rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa but that does not mean the AFC East contender is prepared to give up on their season nor recently demoted second string quarterback. Head coach Brian Flores states that the team has no intention of trading Ryan Fitzpatrick.
The veteran led the Dolphins to a 3-3 record and second place within the division.
Shopping list for three NFL teams
The CBS Sports team has been compiling needs for multiple teams across the NFL. Rather than reading a generic list of players available, indulge in a more team-centric approach:
Cleveland Browns Las Vegas Raiders New England Patriots New York Giants Philadelphia Eagles Washington Football Team
Players that could be available at the deadline
CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin constructed a position-by-position list of 75 players that could be on the move ahead of the Nov. 3 trade deadline. Some of the notable names include Saints quarterback Jameis Winston, Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green, Texans edge rusher J.J. Watt and Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore. For the full list, check out CBSSports.com.
Cowboys make DE Everson Griffen, DT Dontari Poe available
CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker confirmed that Griffen and Poe have been made available to other teams in a potential trade scenario. Griffen signed a one-year, $6 million deal with Dallas prior to the season and would be owed roughly half. CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan notes that the 32-year-old has played 56.43% of Dallas’ defensive snaps and totaled 20 tackles, six quarterback hits, and 2.5 sacks. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin laid out five potential destinations for Griffen with Seattle being the most likely.
Poe signed a two-year deal worth $8.5 million, but there is a reasonable out in the contract after this season. It is less likely that he is moved at the deadline.
Ten trades that should happen before the Nov. 3 deadline
CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin proposed ten trades that would be win-win situations for both teams involved. What would A.J. Green look like on the Packers? It may not cost as much as you might think. Read the explanation behind that trade:
“At this point, why shouldn’t Green Bay take a swing, even if it eventually means losing Green in 2021 free agency and hoping for a compensatory pick? Aaron Rodgers has done very well operating with just Davante Adams and/or Allen Lazard, but with the latter hurt and No. 12 clearly positioned to take the Packers on another run, he deserves the gamble,” Benjamin wrote.
Romeo Crennel attempts to assure Texans they won’t be traded
The Texans are off to an unexpected 1-6 start to the season. Bill O’Brien has been fired in favor of veteran coach Romeo Crennel. Crennel, who likely has little authority over personnel decisions as an interim head coach, attempted to reassure his players that they will not be traded.
“So, with this situation the way it is, I think that it might be more on their mind this year than it would be any other year. I’ve talked to them and tried to reassure them that I’m not looking to trade guys, but human nature is human nature.”
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora believes it is time for a fire sale in Houston. The team has struggled with the likes of edge rusher Whitney Mercilus, J.J. Watt and others. If the team is going to be bad anyway, they might as well re-coup some of the picks flushed down the drain by O’Brien.
Bengals DE Carlos Dunlap attempts to sell house on Twitter
There has been no mincing of words in regard to Dunlap’s frustration. He has posted the team’s edge rush rotations on social media and is now attempting to sell his house on Twitter. The message is clear: trade me. CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr wrote about the veteran’s frustration upon being demoted.
In addition to Dunlap, defensive tackle Geno Atkins, wide receiver A.J. Green, wide receiver John Ross and cornerback William Jackson could also be on the move. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin explored potential destinations for each of the disgruntled AFC North talents. The Bills were a staple.
Atlanta has already pressed the reset button on their leadership structure with head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff being shown the door. The mindset will not trickle down to the players, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who notes that the team has no intention of trading Ryan or Jones.
The Falcons have gone 25-30 since that fateful 28-3 collapse against the Patriots in Super Bowl LI.
Patriots searching for receiver help again
New England drafted N’Keal Harry in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft and traded a second round pick for Mohamed Sanu. Neither has been the answer that the team had hoped. The Patriots are still alive within the AFC East but the outlook grows more bleak with each passing week. The team’s upcoming game against Buffalo could determine whether they are buyers or sellers by Nov. 3. As it stands, Bill Belichick is exploring options on the wide receiver trade market, according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora. Two of the team’s top five receptions leaders are running backs. Draft tight ends Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene have a combined one reception.
Texans expected to trade at least one receiver, other veterans
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora has reported that the Texans are a popular team in trade conversations. The organization’s sluggish start and obvious eyes to the future have potential playoff contenders scouring their roster. La Canfora states rival executives believe Houston will trade at least one receiver, Will Fuller, Brandin Cooks and Kenny Stills, by the deadline. They are also gauging the market on edge rusher Whitney Mercilus, who has three years left on a four-year, $54 million deal signed in May of 2015.
Running back Duke Johnson and tight end Darren Fells are other names that have drawn consideration.
Vikings looking to shed cap space, rival GMs aren’t eager
Minnesota has made a series of poor salary cap decisions leading up to the ultimate errors: re-signing Anthony Barr after he attempted to leave for New York and doubling down on Kirk Cousins. Now, they find themselves in a position to discard players because their season has not gone as expected and they are up against the salary cap wall.
The team has already traded edge rusher Yannick Ngakoue but more moves could be on the way. CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora had the following to say about the team’s activity: “Multiple executives who have been in contact with the Vikings believe the team is eager to move several more high-priced veterans who likely do not fit into the team’s long-term plans.”
The names most often mentioned are safety Harrison Smith, left tackle Riley Reiff, safety Anthony Harris, tight end Kyle Rudolph and wide receiver Adam Thielen.
Bengals more engaged in trade talks than the previous year
Defensive tackle Geno Atkins, cornerback William Jackson, wide receiver A.J. Green, wide receiver John Ross and edge rusher Carlos Dunlap have all made it clear that they are open to a change of scenery, according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora. The Bengals were very unwilling to trade veterans last season — an absolute mistake, says the writer continually beating a dead horse — but La Canfora notes that NFL executives are “detecting a vibe that is not quite as trade-averse” in Cincinnati.
Giants trade Markus Golden to Arizona in exchange for draft pick
On Oct. 23, the Giants agreed to trade outside linebacker Markus Golden to the Cardinals in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round pick. Golden, who actually began his career in Arizona, had just 1.5 sacks in seven games with the Giants this season. It was a priority to bolster the pass rush following the loss of Chandler Jones for the season.
Philadelphia and Julie Ertz’s husband have been at odds over his contract for some time. The matters were only exacerbated by new deals for Travis Kelce and George Kittle this offseason. Ertz was recently placed on injured reserve, which means that he can not be traded. SI’s Albert Breer reported that the team attempted to trade the player before placing him on said IR. Prior to the injury, he had recorded 24 receptions for 178 yards and one touchdown.
Breer added that wide receiver Alshon Jeffery is also on the trade block, but it is difficult to fathom anyone would want to take on that contract in relation to his limited production.
Minnesota trades Yannick Ngakoue to Baltimore for draft picks
Less than two months after acquiring the pass rusher from Jacksonville, Minnesota shipped Yannick Ngakoue to the east coast in exchange for a package of draft picks less than they initially traded to the Jaguars. The Maryland native, who has recorded five sacks this season, is headed home in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 fifth-round pick.
Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta hinted that the Ravens may not be done making moves. The acquisition of Ngakoue is clearly a move to slow down Patrick Mahomes, who is sometimes flustered by heavy pass rush, and the Chiefs offense. CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker graded the trade acknowledging that Baltimore fleeced their trade partner.
New York traded Willis and a 2021 seventh-round pick to the 49ers in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round pick. The capital gain is marginal at best but general manager Joe Douglas is cleaning house in the Big Apple. I explored some of the other Jets players that could find interest in their services at the trade deadline.
New York trades Steve McLendon to Tampa Bay
The Jets sent the defensive tackle and a 2023 seventh-round pick to the Buccaneers in exchange for a 2022 sixth-round pick. Tampa Bay had recently lost Vita Vea to an injury for the season.
It was later revealed that McLendon played for the Jets after finding out about his trade to the Buccaneers. A car was waiting for him after the game and he immediately drove to Tampa.

Chlorokinesis: Semi-mystical connection to the plant world through a force called the Green. She is able to manipulate and animate plants.
Pheromone Control: Ivy is known to be able to seduce men and women alike, often using pheromones to do so, but even without the pheromones, her beauty is still an asset that can she can use to seduce.
Toxikinesis: A deliberate overdose of plant and animal based toxins into her blood stream that make her touch deadly. Ivy can create the most potently powerful floral toxins in Gotham City. Often these are secreted from her lips and administered via a kiss. They come in a number of varieties, from mind controlling drugs to instantly fatal necrotics. Her skin is toxic as well, although contact with it is usually not fatal.
Toxic Immunity: Immunity to all toxins, bacteria, and viruses.
Skin Pigment Manipulation: By reducing the intensity of her poison, she can give herself a normal skin tone, allowing her to move around in public without being recognized.
Tumblr media
Abilities
Botany: Doctor Isley was a renowned scientist with a career in Gotham City. She's always had a fascination with plants and they have been the major direction in her life even after her accident. Her knowledge of botany allows her to better manipulate her plants.
Toxicology: Her specialization in Botany was Toxicology, at first she used her knowledge for perfumes, make-up and medicine. After her accident, she used her knowledge to grow thorny plants and poisonous traps for her enemies.
Seduction: Pamela Isley has always been a beautiful woman but she never used her looks or talents for personal gain until she became Poison Ivy. She taunts her trapped opponents with their human desires and can even infatuate thugs to her cause through her plants or her own means.

Tumblr media
Weaknesses
Vulnerability to Darkness: Poison Ivy requires substantial amounts of solar energy to live.
Mental Instability: Poison Ivy has been committed to Arkham Asylum on a regular basis. She speaks to her plants, finds extreme rage towards males and at a certain point sought out the destruction of the human race so only she and her plants would live.
Tumblr media
Pre-Crisis
Pamela Isley was born in Washington, daughter of a wealthy family. She attended college in Seattle, where she studied botany. Pamela fell in love with Marc Legrand, one of her teachers and they started a relationship. Eventually, Pamela stole some special herbs from a local museum to help Legrand with some experiments, but he betrayed and poisoned her using the same herbs she had stolen for him. Pamela survived the poisoning and as a result, she became invulnerable to all poisons. These events were known by the FBI, but they had Pamela's name wrongly recorded as Lillian Rose.
Turning to crime, Pamela adopted the alias of Poison Ivy and appeared in public for the first time in Gotham City in order to challenge the most renowned criminals for the title of Public Enemy No. 1. She managed to outmatch them, but she was confronted by Batman and Robin. Using her charms, she almost escaped from them, but Batman recovered just in time to capture her and placed her in prison. Later, Ivy attempted to escape prison using Batman as her enforcer, but her plan backfired and she was captured once again.
Eventually, she escaped from prison and joined the Injustice Gang, but they were all defeated by the Justice League. Not long after this, Ivy became a member of the jury on a mock trial run by criminals in Gotham, which was staged in order to determine who had killed Batman. The whole situation was a plan concocted by Batman to capture the Joker, which allowed Ivy and the other criminals to avoid capture.
Some time later, Ivy joined forces with Catwoman and Madame Zodiac in order to confront Batwoman, Batgirl and Huntress. Although successful at first, Ivy and Catwoman were captured and defeated while Zodiac betrayed them and escaped, leaving them behind. When Ivy escaped once again, she planned her revenge against her former lover, Marc Legrand and transformed him into a tree-like creature under her command. Ivy started a new series of crimes, but she was confronted by Wonder Woman, who turned the Legrand creature against Ivy and caused their apparent demise.
Tumblr media
Return to Gotham
Ivy had survived her encounter with Wonder Woman and after a short stint with the Injustice Gang, she returned to Gotham City with a grand scheme to steal the assets of Wayne Enterprises from Bruce Wayne. Ivy's plan was almost successful, but despite his hypnotic suggestion, Bruce Wayne resisted Ivy's commands and challenged her as Batman. Ivy's plan came crumbling down when Batman and Robin worked together against her and her trusted assistant revealed the truth to the authorities. Ivy was subsequently arrested and Wayne recovered the assets of his company.
However, Ivy was soon released due to lack of evidence and good behavior and she started working on her next scheme. She allied with a scientist and together, they created plant monsters that could potentially destroy Gotham. Ivy then used some executives from Wayne Enterprises to give the creatures their energy. Her recklessness caused Ivy to be confronted once again by Batman, who foiled her plans with help from the new Robin.
Tumblr media
Post-Crisis
Doctor Pamela Lillian Isley grew up in Seattle; daughter to wealthy yet distant parents. In college, she specialized in botany and toxicology and was a very promising, but naive, student. Her professor, Doctor Jason Woodrue, later known as the Floronic Man, seduced her, hoping to persuade her into becoming a human test subject for his experiments. These experiments, according to Isley, were torturous. Twice, she was nearly killed, and ended up in the hospital for six months. Woodrue fled the authorities, while Isley was left with a changed physiology. Toxins in her bloodstream made her touch deadly and immune to all poisons, viruses, bacteria, and fungi. She also gained the ability to produce pheromones that she could use to seduce men into doing her bidding. Unfortunately, the results of these experiments also also left her barren, and she has treated her plants as her children ever since.
Enraged at her betrayal by a man, Isley suffered violent mood swings. She later caused a boyfriend to have a car accident by bringing about a massive fungal-overgrowth in his lungs. Isley then left Seattle, eventually settling down in Gotham City.
Her first act, there, was threatening to release her suffocating spores into the air unless the city met her demands. Thus, she became infamous as Poison Ivy.
Tumblr media
Criminal Career
After several encounters with Batman, Ivy was locked in prison for a while, until she was released on parole. Joining forces with a criminal known as "The Grip", Ivy used her pheromones and seduction tactics to steal from wealthy men. Unfortunately, her victims also died and investigations revealed that they had been killed by a disease that was slowly killing Ivy as well, as a result of the weakening of her poison immunity. Batman located Ivy and after a brief confrontation, she understood that her life was in danger and agreed to be hospitalized, where she would be properly treated and eventually recovered.
After a massive breakout from Arkham orchestrated by Bane, Poison Ivy escaped and created an army of "deadfellows", after which she attended a Charity Function at the Gotham Civic Center, where she released some plant spores in the air to mind control all the wealthy men of Gotham and she took them to her hideout, the greenhouse Neo Eden. Batman thwarted Ivy's plans and stopped the eco-terrorist.
Tumblr media
Leaving Gotham
A few years after her arrival, she would try to leave Gotham forever, escaping Arkham to settle on a desert island in the Caribbean. She molded the barren wasteland into a tropical paradise and stated that for the first time in her life, she was happy. It was soon firebombed, however, when an American-owned corporation tested their weapons systems out on what they thought was an abandoned island. Ivy then returned to Gotham, punishing those responsible. After being willingly apprehended by Batman, she resolved that she could never leave Gotham, at least not until the world was safe for plants. From then on, she dedicated herself to the mission of purifying Gotham.
Tumblr media
Injustice Gang and Harley Quinn
Poison Ivy was a member of the original Injustice Gang of the World, which fought the Justice League on several occasions. She also joined the Secret Society of Super-Villains for a mission against the Justice League. Years later, she was coerced into being a member of the Suicide Squad. During this time she used her abilities to enslave Count Vertigo.
Ivy is also friends with the Joker's sidekick Harley Quinn. Unlike most villain team-ups, their partnership seems to be rooted in genuine friendship, and Ivy really wants to save Harley from her abusive relationship with the Joker.
Tumblr media
No Man's Land and Hush
Following the destruction of Gotham in an earthquake, the ruins of the city were declared a No Man's Land. Rather than fight over territory like most of Batman's enemies, Ivy held dominion over Robinson Park, and turned it into a tropical paradise. Sixteen children who were orphaned during the quake came to live with her, as she sympathized with them, having suffered a traumatic childhood herself. She cared for them like sons and daughters, despite her general misanthropy.
That winter, Clayface paid Ivy a visit, hoping to form a bargain with her. This would entail her growing fruits and vegetables, while the orphans harvested them, and then he would sell the produce to the highest bidder. She wanted nothing to do with the plan and attempted to kill him with a kiss. Clayface overpowered her and imprisoned she and the orphans for six months in a chamber under the lake in the park. He fed her salt and kept her from the sun to weaken her. Eventually, Batman came and discovered the prisoners. The two agreed to work together to take Karlo down. Batman battled Clayface and instructed Robin to blow up the lake bed above, allowing the rushing water to break apart the mud, effectively freeing Ivy. She fought Karlo, ensnaring him in the branches of a tree and fatally kissing him. She then proceeded to sink him down into the ground, where he became fertilizer for Ivy's plants. Batman, originally intended to take the orphans away from Ivy, but recognized that staying with her was what was best for them, and they remained in her care until the city was restored
After Gotham City was reincorporated into the United States, the city wanted to evict her from the park and send her back to Arkham Asylum. They also mistakenly believed that the orphans in Ivy's care were unwilling hostages. The Gotham City Police Department threatened to spray the park with a powerful herbicide that most certainly would have killed every living plant in the park, including Ivy, and more than likely do harm to the children as well. Ivy refused to leave the park to the city and let them undo the work she had done, so she chose martyrdom. It was only after Rose, one of the orphans, was accidentally poisoned by Ivy that she surrendered herself to the authorities in order to save Rose's life. Batman then became aware that Ivy was still more human than plant.
Poison Ivy later came to believe that her powers had begun killing the children she looked after, so she asked Batman to help her reverse her condition to make her a normal human being again. Though it was a success, she was convinced soon after by Hush to take a serum that would restore her powers, but she apparently died in the process. When her grave was visited later, however, it was covered with vines and ivy, suggesting that her death would be short-lived.
Ivy was back in Gotham when Riddler set his Hush plan in motion. Promising her money, Riddler used Ivy to mind control Catwoman and Superman. Ivy was captured, though unbeknownst to her this was part of Riddler's plan. When Riddler was finally discovered, he was hunted by all the criminals he manipulated and sought Poison Ivy's protection. However, Ivy wanted to destroy Riddler as much as everyone else and tried to eliminate him. Ivy succeeded on destroying the Riddler by making him realize that he was no longer a criminal force in Gotham and left him in a catatonic state.
Tumblr media
One Year Later
One year after the events of the Infinite Crisis, Ivy was alive and active. Her control over flora had increased, apparently on a par with that of the Swamp Thing or the Floronic Man. She also appeared to have resumed her crusade against the corporate enemies of the environment with a new fanaticism, regarding Batman no longer as an opponent, but merely as a "hindrance".
Later, it was discovered that Ivy had been feeding people, including tiresome lovers, incompetent henchmen, and those who returned her smile to a giant plant which would digest the victims slowly and painfully. She referred to it as a guilty pleasure. In an unprecedented event, the souls of her victims merged with the plant, creating a botanical monster called Harvest, which sought revenge upon Ivy. With the intervention of Batman, however, she was saved. Ivy was left in critical condition, and the whereabouts of Harvest were unknown.
Tumblr media
Countdown
After recovering, Ivy caught the Trickster and Pied Piper eating fruits in one of her gardens. Her plants then told her that the men had hurt them and she proceeded to ensnare them with intent to kill, if not for the intervention of Deathstroke.
Later, Ivy was contacted by Catwoman, who wanted to get revenge over Hush. Ivy was in charge of locating every single hideout Hush had used and she stole all the money stashed in those places.
Tumblr media
Final Crisis
Poison Ivy was recruited by Libra for his Secret Society of Super Villains, and later fell under the control of the Anti-Life Equation. This resulted in a direct confrontation with the Spectre, the Question and Radiant.
Tumblr media
Battle for the Cowl
After the Black Glove's failed plan to destroy Batman, all the inmates from Arkham Asylum were transferred to Blackgate Penitentiary until Arkham was completely decontaminated. On their way back to Arkham, the vehicles that transported the inmates were assaulted by a new Black Mask, who freed the inmates, blew the asylum in front of all of them and forced them to join his army. Ivy was among the inmates who joined Black Mask's group and under his instructions, she teamed up with Killer Croc, located the Batmobile and attacked Damian Wayne, who was saved by the timely arrival of Nightwing.
Following Black Mask's plan, Ivy and Croc joined Firefly to burn and destroy Penguin's warehouses. However, tired of being manipulated by Black Mask, Ivy released a series of chemicals that nullified the chemical implant Black Mask was using to control them and Ivy freed herself from his grasp. She went to Catwoman's place, looking for Selina, but instead she found Harley Quinn and Riddler, who explained that they were also looking for Catwoman. Putting their differences aside, they teamed up and found Selina, unconscious on the streets.
Tumblr media
Gotham City Sirens
Some time later, after rescuing Catwoman from Boneblaster, a new villain trying to make a name for himself, Poison Ivy took her back to Edward Nigma's townhouse. When there, Catwoman saw that Ivy had been keeping the Riddler under mind control so that she and Harley Quinn could use his townhouse as a hideout. Catwoman decided that with Gotham City more dangerous than ever, thanks to all the gang wars and a new Batman, a partnership with the other two women would be advantageous. However, Ivy feared that Catwoman had lost her edge and prowess, and consulted with Zatanna regarding the nature of Catwoman's injuries. Zatanna responded that Catwoman had psychological wounds that would need healing, more so than physical ones. Ivy resolved that she and Harley would provide Catwoman with "positive female reinforcement", and the three agreed to become a team.
Ivy joined Selina on a mission at the Club V, where Selina was tasked to follow Vicki Vale. However, when Harley crashed the place in order to retrieve her stolen pet hyenas, Ivy was forced to help her fight against the various criminals in the building.
After many adventures together, Harley Quinn betrayed her companions and broke into Arkham Asylum with the goal of killing the Joker. However, she ultimately chose to release Joker from his cell instead, and together the two orchestrated a violent takeover of the facility. Poison Ivy arrived and tried to convince Harley that the Joker was evil, but Harley Quinn refused to believe her. After they were defeated by Catwoman and Batman, Catwoman told Ivy that they would no longer be a team, angry at Ivy's earlier attempt to drug her in order to discover Batman's identity. Poison Ivy was then incarcerated in Arkham Asylum.
Ivy soon escaped and made amends with Harley Quinn. Together, the two set off to find Catwoman and make her pay for her betrayal. The two of them found Catwoman and fought her on the streets, where Catwoman confessed that she saw good in the both of them, and only wanted to help them. When she told them that she had only kept tabs on them because Batman wanted to keep them under control, Ivy took her anger out on the city by using giant vines to destroy buildings, cursing at Batman for manipulating her. Batman was about to arrest them, but Catwoman helped the two of them escape.

2021 NFL Undrafted Free Agents
Every year - once the final cuts have been made - I like to list which teams kept which undrafted rookies on their 53-man rosters. It can be very telling. Sometimes it indicates teams without great depth or salary-cap room. It can also be a sign of great talent being recognized against significant odds.
In short: it was a rough year for undrafted rookies. No team kept more than two, which is unusual. And 14 teams didn’t keep any!

Press Release
SEATTLE (February 23, 2021) – Yonder Cider and Bale Breaking Brewing Co are excited to announce the opening of a joint taproom in the heart of Seattle’s Ballard Brewery District. Scheduled to open this summer, the expansive new location will bring more than 20 taps of Washington-made beer and cider together under one roof, showcasing the best of apples and hops grown in the state.
“After years of thinking about an expansion west of the Cascades, we’re thrilled to have found the perfect space and perfect partners for this taproom,” said Meghann Quinn, co-founder of Bale Breaker. “Because our beer focuses on showcasing the best of our homegrown ingredients, partnering with Yonder Cider was an easy decision. We’ll bring the hops from Yakima, they’ll bring the apples from Wenatchee, and we’ll showcase the best of the east side of Washington to those on the west.”   “We dreamed of a taproom when we launched Yonder, but this is beyond our wildest dreams,” said Caitlin Braam, founder of Yonder. “By joining forces with Bale Breaker, we will be able to bring customers the full craft beverage experience. I’ve been lucky to call the founders of Bale Breaker friends for nearly my entire career and could not think of better partners for this exciting project.”   Located at 826 NW 49th Street, the former home of Populuxe Brewing, the project joins the more than dozen breweries located in Ballard’s vibrant brewing district. Boasting more than 6,200 square feet of outdoor space and a spacious shared taproom, the new location will feature two bars, rotating food trucks, outdoor firepits and more. Offering year round, seasonal and specialty releases from both brands, the two buildings on site will also house small-batch production for both Yonder and Bale Breaker.   To make the shared tasting room possible, the founders of Yonder and Bale Breaker have started a distillery together. As of now, cideries and breweries alone cannot share a tasting room in Washington state. However, thanks to a new bill passed in June of 2020, distilleries can share their tasting rooms with wineries and breweries. The distillery will act as R&D for spirits produced using products from the two brands.
This new taproom is in addition to Bale Breaker’s Yakima taproom, as well as Yonder’s ‘Yonder Bar’ retail space in Seattle. More details about the new location will be announced closer to the opening. In the meantime, follow along on Instagram at @yondercider and @balebreaker.  About Yonder Cider

Over four generations, their love of hops has evolved into a passion for craft beer. Today, Meghann, Kevin, Patrick along with Meghann’s husband, Kevin Quinn, operate a 30-barrel brewhouse and a 27,000 square foot facility surrounded by their family’s hop fields, crafting seven year-round canned beers including the widely celebrated Topcutter IPA and GABF medal winner Hazy L IPA, and are distributed throughout Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. Microsoft’s iron cage: Prison surveillance and e-carceration
Tumblr media
Fyodor Dostoyevsky, author of “Crime and Punishment”, once wrote, “The degree of civilisation in a society is revealed by entering its prisons.” Updated for the 21st century, our “degree of civilisation” might be revealed by the technology used inside them.
For Microsoft, prisons represent a market. In recent years, the company and its business partners have started providing an array of surveillance and Big Data analytics solutions to prisons, courts and community supervision programmes.
This comes against a backdrop of global protests against police violence along with calls to defund the police and address institutional racism at every level of the criminal justice system.
In response to this, on June 23, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sent an email to his employees, assuring them the company is committed to “address racial injustice and inequity, and unequivocally believe that Black lives matter.”
The company claims that through their “justice reform initiative”, Microsoft will supply digital technologies that increase police transparency and “direct people into treatment alternatives instead of incarceration”.
But this is not the full picture of Microsoft’s relationship with criminal justice.
What the email did not mention was that for years, Microsoft has partnered with a company called Tribridge to build a corrections management suite – based on a flagship product, Offender 360 – which includes an inmate surveillance and risk scoring solution, a “youth offender” management solution and risk assessment solutions for pretrial and the courts.
Microsoft has also worked on electronic monitoring solutions with partners for persons under “community supervision”, and has its own Microsoft-branded “Digital Prison Management Solution”. Additionally, Microsoft partners with Morocco-based Netopia Solutions, which offers its own “Prison Management Solution” in Africa.
Taken together, Microsoft and its partners’ carceral solutions cover the entire correctional pipeline, from “juvenile delinquency” to pretrial and probation, into prison, and after inmates are released on parole.
Microsoft’s involvement in the carceral state reveals how tech corporations are expanding the scope of surveillance and high-tech tools that discipline and punish communities of colour and the poor. For Microsoft, incarceration is a lucrative opportunity, as “Digital transformation makes it possible to consider prison as a business.”
The Microsoft police state
Microsoft has a little-known law enforcement-focused division, Public Safety and Justice, which provides integrations and services on its Azure cloud in partnership with independent software vendors operating away from public view. Microsoft’s primary business in criminal justice is carried out with its partners, and it largely generates revenue by licensing software and/or renting out storage capacity, servers and software running on cloud infrastructure.
In addition to an extensive partner ecosystem, Microsoft offers its own law enforcement solutions, such as its Domain Awareness System (DAS), called Microsoft Aware – a surveillance and analytics system first developed in tandem with the NYPD and unveiled publicly in 2012. Since then, Aware has been purchased by police forces in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Singapore and Brazil.
With Aware, people are monitored by CCTV cameras and city sensor dragnets, subjected to facial recognition, video analytics, and surveillance-based police patrols, supplemented by Big Data analytics. As we will see later, Microsoft Aware forms the foundation for its own Digital Prison Management Software.
In response to a request for comment about the software in this article, Microsoft stated, “Microsoft has nothing to share”.

Offender 360: To surveil, predict and analyse the correctional pipeline
Microsoft’s first flagship product for correctional services dates back to around 2009, when the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) embarked on a multi-phase, $30-million overhaul of its antiquated computer systems.
At the time, the IDOC managed 49,000 offenders in custody and 28,000 parolees across 28 facilities using more than 40 separate computer applications. Search inquiries required customisation and could take up to two weeks.
Microsoft and its partner Tribridge, a tech company that specialises in business applications and cloud solutions, Microsoft built the IDOC a searchable web-based solution called Offender 360 to centralise databases in the cloud and upgrade its prison management capabilities.
Then-Governor Patrick Quinn said at the time, Microsoft’s “cutting-edge technology will give Illinois one of the most advanced criminal justice information systems in the country.”
An early brochure listed a variety of features that would integrate, index, and expand every bit of data available about inmates for computer-based functionality and analytics:
Tracking capabilities include an inmate’s physical location – their movement history between specific locations, such as a prison, and within them – and identification by attributes such as height, weight, scars and marks (such as tattoos), religion, and known aliases.
Categorisation and classification features index attributes such as security characteristics (for example, aggression level and offender grade) and case and behavioural histories.
Search features allow prison authorities to locate inmates of interest and observe their profiles for ad-hoc queries and real-time data analysis. For example, prison authorities can search for “inmates under the age of 50 with a projected parole date within five years” or inmates “classified as highly aggressive, high escape risk, with known affiliations to one or many security threat groups”.
The constant stream of data collection becomes a form of behavioural surveillance that follows prisoners wherever they go.
Tumblr media
Prisoner advocates fears surveillance of prisoners has expanded as new technologies have been introduced to prisons
Monica Cosby spent 20 years in Illinois prisons, and is now co-director of Organizing with Moms United Against Violence and Incarceration (MUAVI). She explained to me the problem with continuous prisoner profiling and its effects on the inmate population.
Everyone has a “Master File” kept by the IDOC “that has all your info in it,” Cosby explained. This includes your behavioural history, staff assaults (which, Cosby notes, could include false accusations), medical records, inmate property – they monitor basically everything you have and do while in prison, she said.
The data collected can be used against the inmates. For example, the record of alleged inmate “misbehaviour” can be brought up at a parole hearing, and Big Data analytics can deem inmates as prone to violence or recidivism. However, the fine details about what is collected and evaluated by analytics are often not available to the public.
Cosby and other advocates fear the surveillance of prisoners has only expanded as new technologies, such as iPads used for education or entertainment, are introduced in the prison population.
Over time, each data point creates a record and with it a permanent chain to the past. “There is an inherent narrative in the data and the presentation of that data … that is always going to be held against Black, brown, and poor people ,” Cosby said.
Youth 360
In Illinois, the work of Microsoft and Tribridge was not limited to adult incarceration. The Youth 360 system was designed for the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ), which manages the state’s five juvenile correctional facilities.
Tumblr media
A schematic representation of Offender 360 and Youth 360 Microsoft cloud infrastructure. Information includes education data from the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS), Illinois Healthcare and Family Services (IHFS), Juvenile Assessment and Intervention System (JAIS), electronic medical records (EMR), Affordable Care Act (ACA), Illinois State Police (ISP), and the courts
Youth 360 is similar to Offender 360 in that ingests a wide range of data about its subjects. Youth 360 data can be linked to other data systems, such as school and public health systems, and it hosts Youth Assessment and Screening Instrument (YASI) data to profile “criminogenic risks, needs, and strengths.” YASI is used for every youth put on probation.
For many youth – especially children of colour, disabled, lower-class and other marginalised groups – schools can be hostile sites of policing and surveillance. As a result, schools often become entry points into the carceral system, in what scholars and activists call the “school-to-prison pipeline”.
Jesse Hagopian, a Seattle-based activist, teacher and editor of the magazine Rethinking Schools, explained to me that young people of colour are disproportionately subjected to a “school-to-prison nexus” in which schools “increasingly resemble jails themselves, so that you have metal detectors, and police, and random searches of students in the school building themselves, conditioning mostly BIPOC youth to accept a society that surveils them, that punishes them and that maintains gross inequality”.
“And then there’s an overlapping system of the school-to-prison pipeline that sends them from schools that are increasingly resembling prisons themselves into actual jails – whether that’s a youth jail for kids or getting them ready to go to an adult jail when they leave the school.”
The Seattle Times reports that in Seattle schools, racial disparities in youth discipline begin as early as the age of five. Over time, Black school children are suspended at four times the rate of white children, often for developmentally normal behaviours such as “disobedience” or “rule-breaking”. Nationwide, Black children are about five times more likely to be detained in juvenile justice facilities than white youngsters and are disproportionately sent from juvenile to adult court.
In Illinois, where Youth 360 is deployed, the racial dynamic is similar.

For Hagopian, tracking behaviour and creating risk scores for children is “about naming and shaming”.
“ ‘1984’,” he added.
In response to a request for comments, the IDOC requested a list of questions. Once they were sent, it responded, “the Department is declining participating in this interview.”
Pretrial360
A third system, called Pretrial360, offers case management and predictive analytics software for the courts. Rolled out in Weld County and Mesa County, Colorado, in 2015, it shifts pretrial management from a resource-based model (where the defendant pays for bail) to a risk-based bail decision where risk assessments provide judges with information about defendants and inform decisions about holding or releasing alleged offenders who were arrested and charged before their trial. It also manages the supervision process if defendants are released from the county detention facility. While the fine details about Pretrial360 are not publicly available, some of its metrics include “criminal history tracking, mental illness, pending charges, past FTAs , and ability to track a monitoring device”.
Pretrial360 centralises data from criminal records, jails, police departments, and other data sources, which speeds up data assessments for Mesa County’s Criminal Justice Service Department (CJSD).
Tumblr media
Proponents of pretrial software claim it can be used to keep more people out of jail or prison, but critics argue that biased data and poorly designed software can lead to Black people being assigned a higher risk score than white people with the same characteristics
A variety of pretrial products are available on the market, such as Northpointe COMPAS and CorrectTech Pretrial. Proponents of pretrial software claim it can be used to keep more people out of jail or prison. When guided by algorithms, they argue, a court can quickly determine if a person is likely to skip trial or re-offend. Low-risk defendants can be promptly released back into the community and placed under the supervision of a probation officer. That officer can then use the pretrial software to manage the probation process, potentially adding more data points to the surveillance archives. Algorithms can also be used to calculate sentences.
But critics argue that for communities of colour – over-policed, discriminated against and disadvantaged by structural factors like inter-generational poverty and residential segregation – biased data and poorly designed software leads race-neutral algorithms to assign a higher risk score to Black people than white people with similar characteristics.
While judges often make the final decision about a defendant, and can override the software’s recommendations, evidence suggests the algorithms bias outcomes. In 2019, two academic studies found that Kentucky courts guided by pretrial algorithmic assessments produced outcomes more favourable to white than to Black defendants. A third study found that judges across the country guided by algorithms exhibit a class bias against the poor.
Tumblr media
Risk assessment software is typically proprietary, so the “black box” algorithms shaping criminal justice cannot be scrutinised by the public. Certain variables in an algorithm might serve as proxies for race, such as formal education level, employment status, or criminal record, and therefore re-inscribe race – and racial bias – in a “criminal risk score”. Without an ability to understand how the systems work, everyone is simply asked to “trust” the software is fair and just, including defendants.
Expanding the correctional surveillance web
Even if correctional software did not produce racially biased risk assessments, people from all walks of life are now being swept into a rapidly expanding surveillance net where personal histories are archived by the state and carried along with them through each stage of correctional supervision.
Living with a Master File collected by the state thus becomes an endless burden. Once you are caught in the correctional system, any mistake or perceived misdeed can be held against you.
Prison correctional officers (COs) assign “tickets” to those they deem to be misbehaving. Yet “misbehaviour” is often in the eyes of the beholder, and COs face little accountability for potential abuse of the system.
MUAVI’s Monica Cosby said many of the “staff assaults” recorded in the Master File are “BS, because the police ran into three different people, and her cane got knocked out of her hand because one of the people he bumped into bumped into her,” she explained.
When “tickets” resulting from correctional bias or abuse of authority are recorded in an inmate’s Master File, it can have an effect on that inmate’s chance of getting parole. “ ‘we don’t think you’re a good candidate for parole because you got a ticket 10 years ago that says “staff assault”,’ when really, the police ran past you and tripped over your wheelchair,” Cosby said.
Issues of staff abuse and even outright fabrication make data collection and analysis all the more problematic.

Tribridge’s three core products – Offender 360, Youth 360 and Pretrial360 – drastically expand data collection and analysis. The software brings together “separate silos” of information – be it from schools, medical systems, or disparate correctional databases – to give a complete “360-degree view” of each person. Individuals can then be compared against other people in the database as part of an ongoing (involuntary) human experiment said to identify traits like aggressiveness or predict behaviours, such as “escape risk” or the likelihood of committing a crime.
Under the guise of “data collection” and “better management” of people, Big Data systems are designed to keep tabs on people in increasingly fine detail – at a profit for tech corporations.
More counties
In October 2014, Cook County, Illinois, the second-most populous county in the US, added Offender 360 to its jails.
In July 2017, Microsoft partner DXC Technology, a Fortune 500 giant, acquired Tribridge and re-branded its Offender 360 software under the DXC label as “DXC Offender360”.
The following year, DXC pitched its software for use in Miami-Dade County – the seventh most populous county in the US.
The contract details a staggering variety of features. Capabilities include the ability to track the movement of inmates across facilities using barcode scanners, wristbands, mobile devices, or biometric readers; real-time “head counts” of inmates at all locations; and alerts for probation violation.

People hold posters as they stage a demonstration against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in front of the Microsoft building in New York on July 31, 2018. Demonstrators claims Microsoft has substantial contracts with ICE and the Border Patrol that enable these agencies to tear migrant families apart
DXC also says its software can help track down and detain people for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Microsoft has come under fire in recent years for its contract servicing ICE, an agency within the Department of Homeland Security which detains and deports undocumented immigrants. Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadela, and its president, Brad Smith, defend the contract, stating that they support immigrants and that their company simply provides ICE with services for moving email, calendar, messaging and document management workloads.
Other counties that have inked contracts for Offender360’s correctional software include San Diego County, CA, Placer County, CA, Santa Clara County, CA, and Maricopa County, AZ (the fourth-most populous US county). Public records also indicate a launch in San Francisco, CA.
E-carceration
Over the past few decades, US prison populations dramatically expanded under the “war on crime” that disproportionately targeted people of colour. Today, while the US has less than 5 percent of the world’s population, it has at least 20 percent of the world’s known prison population.
Tumblr media
However, there is a second form of incarceration less spoken about, called “e-carceration”. As crime has dropped and prison populations in the US have modestly declined, the criminal justice system has increased the number of people released on probation (where courts order offenders to be supervised in their communities instead of sending them to prison) and parole (where prisoners are released under supervision after serving all or part of their sentence). Other supervised communities include those on pretrial release, juveniles, and immigrants awaiting the results of asylum or deportation cases.
Probation and parole are collectively known as “community supervision”. When a person is put under community supervision, the courts generate a set of terms and conditions for the sentence. A person may be put in house arrest or given curfews. They may be allowed out of the house from 10 am to 4 pm only, Monday to Friday. They may have to undergo drug and alcohol tests – which can be demanded by an officer at any given time, without warning – and/or be required to obtain employment.
Tumblr media

Probation and parole officers typically use technology like GPS-enabled ankle bracelets for electronic monitoring (EM). Human rights advocates have objected to the use of EM as a means to “release” people from correctional facilities, arguing that it instead creates “digital prisons” that extend incarceration into the offender’s own personal community.
James Kilgore is a research scholar at the University of Illinois’s Center for African Studies in Champaign-Urbana. After spending six years in prison, he became a respected advocate for prison abolition, and has published high-profile works about incarceration and human rights.
Kilgore was under community corrections after he was released from prison in 2009, and was given an ankle monitor to make sure he was home during the hours set by the courts. Under EM, the GPS device must always be on, and supervision officers can show up to conduct searches at any time. He described the psychological effects.
“When I went to bed at night, I kept having to feel my parole agent was laying across the bottom of the bed under the covers,” he told me.
“It’s a sense of always being watched, never sure if you’re going to do the right thing. If the device has technical flaws, it might lose its charge or signal. If it lost signal, I’d have to go and stand out in my front yard at two o’clock in the morning so the signal would pick up. You always feel something is going to go wrong and you’re going to get called in and sent back to prison simply because the device doesn’t do the right thing.”
Kilgore added: “It places huge stresses on your families because A) they have to worry about whether or not you make it back in time if you go out with them, they worry more than you do to get you back in time, and B) then they have to do things for you because you can’t go out. If you need something, if you get a headache and need some aspirin, they’ve got to go do it for you… It becomes a burden.”
Many, he said, are “going to find it very difficult, if not impossible, to get work, because A) you’ve got restrictions of your hours, and B) a lot of people don’t want you working if you have this big, clunky thing on your leg. Or your parole agent can show up at your workplace to look around… They have a 24/7 search warrant for any place that you are.”
The result is that those under electronic monitoring who do find work tend to end up in “part-time, precarious jobs”, Kilgore said. “Your hours are not predictable, your days are not predictable, but you have to be predictable to your parole agent.”
DXC offers solutions for community supervision. Its Offender360 software for Miami-Dade County lists the Sentinel Omnilink GPS Trackable Ankle Monitor and Fleetmatics GPS fleet tracking software (acquired by Verizon) as software “interfaces” for the Offender360 application. Additionally, it offers the PUMA smartphone software for probation and parole.
Tumblr media
Blue dots on an aerial photo of Quincy represent where individuals wearing GPS and radio monitoring bracelets have been, as seen on a computer screen demo at the Mass Probation Service electronic monitoring program
Monica Cosby was placed under electronic monitoring for 60 days after she was released from prison and put on parole. Cosby told me, “there are a gazillion rules to follow about where you can go, where you can live, who you can associate with”, which is tied to your Master File.
This can lead to isolation, especially for communities of colour: “A lot of this – that’s everybody” because so many people know people who are part of an alleged “gang”, she said.
Moreover, “all of this data that is held actively targets people”, Cosby said. With electronic monitoring, officers can show up to search parolees at any time. In effect, EM “brings the prison to you, it makes your crib a satellite of the prison”. This “puts everyone in proximity to the police”, leading to further isolation from the community.
In response to a request for comments, DXC Technology asked for a list of questions. Once they were sent, it did not respond to further emails.
Microsoft’s carceral solutions in the UK
In addition to DXC, Microsoft has developed its own Azure solution for electronic monitoring, what it calls “next generation offender tracking”, powered by the Microsoft Internet of Things. The solution, created for UK authorities, strives to alert police and probation officers in real-time to parole violations.
In the UK, Microsoft is also advertising its controversial Domain Awareness System, the Microsoft Aware surveillance platform, as its very own Digital Prison Management Solution (DPMS) for prisons. A product that combines “Microsoft technology with corrections operational knowledge”, the solution “empowers agencies and prison authorities to ingest and collaborate on data to respond to real-time threats and hazards whilst streamlining operations,” providing “a feature rich situational awareness platform” for prison authorities.
For Microsoft, this was years in the making. In a 2016 blog post, “Digital Technology and the Prison of the Future”, Microsoft envisioned prisons monitored with CCTV, drones and IoT devices, including “finger, face, and eye recognition to identify inmates” as well as RFID tagging and tracking bands.
Much like its New York City surveillance solution, the DPMS seeks to provide authorities with a 21st century God-like view of their human subjects. “Law enforcement organisations and prison authorities,” Microsoft explains, “have many powerful tools to provide insight regarding violent crime and terrorism, including real-time sensors (e.g., remote detectors, automated car registration plate readers, and closed-circuit television cameras) as well as traditional law enforcement data (such as …  police … and national security records).”
Yet they face a problem: “These tools are disconnected from each other, requiring enforcement staff to manually assemble a complete picture of a potential threat or crime.” Authorities require “a solution that can ‘fuse’ this disparate sensor and system data to help provide instant, comprehensive situational awareness and help investigative and response activities” to keep both “prisoners and staff safe.”
Tumblr media
A Microsoft logo seen at one of their stores in London, UK with detectives, patrol, and other analysts”. For prisons, Microsoft’s DPMS appears unprecedented in scope and sophistication.
‘Africa Partner of the Year’: Netopia Prison Management Solution
Microsoft has also expanded its footprint into African prisons. Its partner, Morocco-based Netopia Solutions, provides software called “Prison Management Solution”, or PMS. Netopia describes the solution as “a modern system dedicated to the  management and monitoring of the prisoners, from their incarceration to their release.” The software is listed on Microsoft’s AppSource website, added in January 2019.
With Netopia’s PMS, prisoner data is collected (sentence, health, social activities, education and other data) and is shared “between different institutions and players”. Software features include, among others, “electronic agenda planning of internal and external movements”, inmate activities, as well as dashboard features, reports and statistics. Other prison solutions include acquisition and verification of biometric data, “automatic sentence calculation” and “escape management”.
Tumblr media
Security forces stand guard outside a prison in Sale, near Rabat, Morocco
In 2015, Amnesty International issued a report on Moroccan security forces torturing prisoners. Methods used include “beatings, asphyxiation, simulated drowning, psychological and sexual violence”, and are directed at “protesters, political or student activists, as well as people suspected of terrorism.” London-based NGO Adala UK also documented torture and abuse of Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons. The Moroccan government condemns the use of torture, and claims to be reforming its prison system. However, it continues to imprison human rights activists, and stands accused of ongoing prison abuse.
Throughout sub-Saharan Africa, prisoners face overcrowding and extreme abuse. The systems are connected to the legacy of colonialism. Nigerian-born Biko Agozino, a professor of Criminology at Virginia Tech University, told me, “In Africa, we managed to live for thousands of years without building a single prison… For Africa, the prison is a legacy of colonialism. All the prisons in Africa were built by colonisers ”.
Netopia has been a partner to Microsoft since 2004. In 2017, Netopia was named a Microsoft “Africa Partner of the Year”. In the press brief, Microsoft praised its software, explaining that: “Their eGov suite called CIVIS includes biometric passport solutions, prison management and healthcare assistance modules being rapidly adopted. Recognised this year with the Microsoft eGov Innovation Grant, Microsoft Azure platform is the next generation platform helping Netopia scale their solutions across new markets. Netopia were successful in transforming their business model and now going to offer their solutions as managed IP.”
While it is not clear where exactly Netopia Prison Management Solution is deployed, Microsoft stated that “Netopia is in Morocco with a deep focus on transforming digitally, Government services in North and Central Africa”.
Sohela Surajpal, a recent graduate of the Pretoria Centre for Human Rights who wrote her dissertation on prison abolition in Africa, told me that many Africans “get lost in the system” during pretrial, because “the courts are overburdened” and those arrested are often poor and unable to afford legal assistance. In some countries, if their records get lost, “they will now most likely spend the rest of their lives in the prison because nobody even knows they are there”. Software can help avoid these horrific problems, she remarked.
On the flip side, Surajpal said, Netopia describes a system that “creates an expanded carceral state with a lot more power and control of the people in prisons.” In many African countries, “inmates can leave and go visit their family or walk around town”, she said. “This is the result of how these communities think about justice, and because there are not enough resources and will to control people.” This approach, “may not be perfect, but is more humane than locking people away in cages”.
Surajpal said systems like Netopia’s PMS “could do a lot of damage to these kinds of open-air prisons.” When companies start to build in “escape probability” and “monitoring prisoners and their movement, we begin to cement prisons in the way that they exist in the US”, she said.
Moreover, with the “shift towards more surveillance that we’re seeing in parts of the justice system … if states the technology to surveil far more effectively, it’s only going to push this extreme surveillance attitude that is being adopted.”
Surajpal noted, “Africa has its fair share of dictators or authoritarian governments, and very homophobic countries.” She worries with “technology which allows governments to track people more effectively, make projections about prisoner behaviour, and risks of re-offending … you equip governments to use prisons more effectively to pursue this authoritarian, prejudicial mandate.”
Netopia Solutions did not respond to multiple email requests for comment.
Microsoft public relations: A house built on sand
In July, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella commemorated John Lewis, the US congressperson and civil rights legend who had just passed away.
John Lewis taught us to "Be hopeful. Be optimistic. Never lose that sense of hope." He instilled hope in us all, and more importantly, showed us how to turn that hope into progress. May he rest in peace.
— Satya Nadella (@satyanadella) July 18, 2020
Lewis was arrested 45 times during the course of his life, and was sent to prison for using a “white” restroom in Jackson, Mississippi. At the Parchman prison, guards dehumanised Lewis and his comrades for resisting Jim Crow segregation.
Decades later, the cruel and inhumane conditions of prisons remain intact, in the United States, in Africa and elsewhere. For Dennis Childs, author of “Slaves of the State: Black Incarceration from the Chain Gang to the Penitentiary”, “the represents a system of transferring public wealth over to powerful corporate and political interests that are wreaking harm on an unimaginable scale.”
In true capitalist form, Microsoft offers prisons its Aware Solution at a price per head: £504 ($679) to £2602.74 ($3,505.98) per person per day.

Get ready for Week 3 in the NFL!!!
It’s time to look ahead to Week 3 in the NFL!!
Here is the schedule of games this weekend with Auburn players participating in them:
Tonight - 7:20 PM
Dolphins (0-2) at Jaguars (1-1)
Dolphins - Noah Igbinoghene, Chandler Cox
Jaguars - Daniel Thomas
For the second straight Thursday, it’s an intra-state battle on Thursday Night Football. This week in Jacksonville, a pair of Tigers who had big roles last year in Auburn’s secondary will face off for the first time.
Sunday - Noon
49ers (1-1) at Giants (0-2)
49ers - Dee Ford
Giants - Darius Slayton
It would appear Dee Ford will miss some more time for the 49ers who is one of several players injured for the defending NFC Champions.
After further evaluation, #49ers DE Dee Ford is expected to miss this week’s game against the #Giants and there’s no clear timetable for his return, sources tell me and @MikeGarafolo. The hope is Ford’s back injury settles down, but it may take some time.
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) September 22, 2020
As for the Giants, Darius Slayton had just 3 catches in Week 2 after 2 TDs in Week 1 and without Saquon Barkley and WR Sterling Shepard, who were both placed on IR this week, the Giants will need Slayton even more going forward.
Bengals (0-2) at Eagles (0-2)
Bengals - Josh Bynes, Carl Lawson
Eagles - Rudy Ford, Jack Driscoll
The Bengals will move forward without C.J. Uzmoah who was lost for the season due to a Torn Achilles last Thursday night. Josh Bynes already has 16 tackles for Cincinnati this season.
Raiders (2-0) at Patriots (1-1)
Raiders - Daniel Carlson
Patriots - Cam Newton, Jonathan Jones, Jarrett Stidham
This will be the one I would imagine most Auburn fans eyes will be on Sunday. Daniel Carlson has been money for Vegas so far nailing a pair of 54 yard field goals, including one to send the Saints packing last Monday night.
Cam Newton was about a yard away from completing a remarkable comeback in Seattle Sunday night. But he certainly made this presence felt throwing for 397 yards and scoring 2 more TDs on the ground. Cam is back and healthy and that’s dangerous for opposing NFL defenses.
Washington Football Team (1-1) at Browns (1-1)
Washington - Peyton Barber
Browns - Cody Parkey
Peyton Barber saw extremely limited action last week after 2 TDs in Week 1.
Cody Parkey made all 5 of his extra points against Cincinnati last week.
Bears (2-0) at Falcons (0-2)
Falcons - Marlon Davidson, Josh Harris
Good news on Marlon Davidson it would appear, who has missed the first 2 games due to a knee injury:
Dan Quinn said he expects rookie DT Marlon Davidson to get a "full allotment of reps" in practice this week. Has been limited since season started with a knee injury.
— William McFadden (@willmcfadden) September 23, 2020
They need all the help on defense they can get as they’re giving up only 39 points a game over the first 2 weeks.
Sunday - 3:05/3:25
Panthers (0-2) at Chargers (1-1)
Panthers - Derrick Brown
DB had a tough outing Sunday and will look to bounce back as Carolina heads to the West Coast.
Jets (0-2) at Colts (1-1)
Colts - Braden Smith
Cowboys (1-1) at Seahawks (2-0)
Seahawks - Neiko Thorpe
Buccaneers (1-1) at Broncos (0-2)
Buccaneers - Carlton Davis, Jamel Dean
Carlton Davis had an interception last week against the Panthers and will take on a Broncos team whose offense has gotten off to a slow start.
Lions (0-2) at Cardinals (2-0)
Lions - Kerryon Johnson
Kerryon found the end-zone but has just 7 and 8 carries in his first 2 weeks of the season.
Sunday - 7:20
Packers (2-0) at Saints (1-1)
Packers - Montravious Adams

NFL Power Rankings: Behind too-early MVP candidate Josh Allen (seriously), the Bills are dangerous
Josh Allen had 249 yards passing in a half, 417 yards and 4 touchdowns for the sport, and but it was a run that had everybody speaking.
Allen is a giant dude, he likes to run and he’s not enjoyable to sort out within the open area. Close to the tip of the primary half, Allen eluded the go rush, took off operating and met up with Miami Dolphins linebacker Kyle Van Noy within the open area. Van Noy is an excellent participant, and he obtained run over by Allen. Then Allen ran by means of defensive finish Emmanuel Ogbah. That was a spotlight that Payments followers shall be having fun with for a very long time.
Oh, the passing. Let’s not overlook that. Allen was 15 of 22 for 249 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions … earlier than halftime. After the Dolphins took a 20-17 lead within the fourth quarter, Allen threw two touchdowns together with a reasonably 46-yarder to John Brown to place the sport away. It was precisely the kind of efficiency the Payments needed once they drafted Allen with the seventh decide of the 2018 draft.
When you hadn’t watched the Payments play in Week 1 and simply paid consideration to social media, you won’t have identified Allen is off to an excellent begin this season. Allen regarded good final week in a win over the New York Jets, although a one badly missed go ultimately zone is what went viral. Then Allen was higher within the second sport.
Allen is the form of participant folks will at all times argue about. Since many draft consultants didn’t like Allen earlier than the draft, they’ll refuse to confess a mistake and can give attention to each missed throw he makes. And there are some dangerous performs; Allen nonetheless has some inaccurate throws. He seemingly at all times will. However he has additionally improved annually and is harnessing his bodily presents to grow to be a playmaking quarterback on an excellent Payments staff. It’s loopy to begin speaking about MVP in Week 2, however if you’re having that dialog, it’s a must to embrace Allen in it.
Allen leads the NFL with 729 passing yards. He has six touchdowns and no interceptions. He additionally has 75 yards speeding. Week 2 is manner too early to speak about MVP candidates, but it surely’s additionally honest to say that if Allen performs anyplace close to this stage all season, he’ll be within the combine. Russell Wilson is the plain two-week MVP, if there’s such factor, and Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and others will seemingly go Allen within the race earlier than the 12 months is over. However Allen doesn’t should be the most effective quarterback within the NFL for the Payments to be good. If he’s even within the high eight or so, Buffalo can compete with anybody. And Allen appears like he could possibly be a minimum of in that vary.
Buffalo goes to be in rivalry for an AFC East championship, making an attempt to interrupt the New England Patriots’ streak of 11 in a row. They’ve a one-game lead after the Patriots got here up simply brief at Seattle on Sunday evening. If what we’ve seen out of Allen the primary two video games is an indication of what he’ll be this season, Buffalo is perhaps considering larger than simply an AFC East title.
Good to know that Adam Gase is uninterested in his staff getting its “ass beat.” He would possibly wish to get used to it. Right here’s what they’ve developing: at Colts, vs. Broncos, vs. Cardinals, at Chargers, vs. Payments, at Chiefs, vs. Patriots. What’s the very best document after that stretch, 2-7?
Christian McCaffrey goes to overlook 4-6 weeks with a excessive ankle sprain and let’s be trustworthy: The Panthers are impossible to have any playoff hopes left when he’s able to return. So there won’t be a lot cause to hurry him again. That makes for a tough first season for brand spanking new coach Matt Rhule.
It’s promising that Washington gave thrilling rookie Antonio Gibson 13 of 22 operating again carries. Groups just like the Jets and Lions shouldn’t be giving carries to 30-something veterans, and a minimum of Washington appears to grasp it’s much more useful to see what Gibson has quite than giving Peyton Barber or J.D. McKissic extra taking part in time.
29. Detroit Lions (0-2, LW: 25)
Up to now 5 quarters the Lions have given up 63 factors. They allowed Aaron Jones to pile up 236 complete yards on Sunday. They get the Cardinals and Saints, a few explosive offenses, subsequent. Right here’s the place you possibly can logically marvel if Matt Patricia’s protection has to indicate some progress for him to maintain his job, however that assumes the Lions possession is paying consideration.
28. New York Giants (0-2, LW: 27)
We’ll discover out rather a lot about Daniel Jones this season. With no Saquon Barkley the remainder of the best way, it’s on Jones to ship. It hasn’t been fairly but in his second season, however he has confronted powerful defenses vs. Pittsburgh and Chicago. The state of affairs isn’t preferrred going ahead however the Giants will learn the way good their quarterback is.
27. Miami Dolphins (0-2, LW: 26)
Mike Gesicki had eight catches for 130 yards and a landing on Sunday. We’ll begin with that as a result of there’s not far more optimistic to say about Miami. If the Dolphins lose to the Jaguars on Thursday evening, and Tua Tagovailoa is wholesome sufficient to play, I’m unsure why you’d give Ryan Fitzpatrick one other begin.
26. Cincinnati Bengals (0-2, LW: 30)
Joe Burrow goes to be actually good. There have been loads of spectacular moments for the rookie, and certainly one of them was that he obtained hit laborious just a few occasions and by no means appeared rattled. It’s actually laborious to consider Burrow gained’t be a top-end quarterback based mostly on what we’ve seen.
25. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1, LW: 29)
James Robinson, an undrafted rookie who appears superb, is why groups just like the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams shouldn’t have used second-round picks on operating backs. Robinson’s 164 speeding yards ranked seventh within the NFL by means of Sunday’s video games.
24. Denver Broncos (0-2, LW: 23)
Von Miller and Courtland Sutton are carried out for the season. A.J. Bouye, Drew Lock and Phillip Lindsay are on the shelf for some time. The Broncos had such excessive hopes two weeks in the past, and now it looks like their season is completed. The NFL may be merciless.
23. Minnesota Vikings (0-2, LW: 16)
Stefon Diggs is efficacious, however he’s not that beneficial. Kirk Cousins was improbable final season, and with out Diggs this season he was completely terrible in Week 2. Cousins had 113 yards, no touchdowns, three interceptions a 15.9 passer score. The one excellent news is that Cousins began gradual final season and turned it round.
22. Houston Texans (0-2, LW: 17)
Will Fuller wasn’t focused on Sunday, as he was apparently coping with a hamstring damage. It’s pretty exceptional how fragile Fuller is. All of us figured he’d miss time with damage, however he was imagined to final a couple of full sport as Houston’s new No. 1 receiver.
21. Atlanta Falcons (0-2, LW: 18)
The Falcons’ choke was as unbelievable because it will get. ESPN’s win chance put Atlanta at a 99.9 % probability to win at one level. In accordance with ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, solely 10 different occasions up to now 20 seasons has a staff blown a sport during which it had that top of a win chance. Dan Quinn has survived earlier than when it appeared like he was going to be fired, however this actually is perhaps the start of the tip.
20. Philadelphia Eagles (0-2, LW: 14)
In some unspecified time in the future we’ve to ask how good Doug Pederson is. He was nice throughout the Tremendous Bowl season, however in hindsight, perhaps then-Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich deserved extra credit score. Since then, the Eagles have underachieved. Had they not backed right into a playoff spot every of the previous two seasons, we’d be far more crucial of Pederson.
19. Cleveland Browns (1-1, LW: 24)
No matter how we must always really feel concerning the Browns signing Kareem Hunt — no person has talked about the video of him shoving and kicking a lady in a very long time, and that lack of true accountability is why some groups don’t thoughts taking up controversial gamers — he and Nick Chubb type a 1-2 duo that no person can match. In the event that they each keep wholesome, the Browns would possibly find yourself with a pair of 1,000-yard rushers.
18. Los Angeles Chargers (1-1, LW: 22)
I’m unsure what to make of Anthony Lynn saying Tyrod Taylor continues to be his starter if he’s 100 %. Perhaps it was simply laying aside answering the query or didn’t wish to be disrespectful to Taylor after he was hospitalized on Sunday. If Lynn was being real and actually plans to begin Taylor, after first-round decide Justin Herbert performed properly vs. the Chiefs, I do not know what to say.
17. Dallas Cowboys (1-1, LW: 12)
Mike McCarthy had one bizarre sport. He has gone overboard on ditching his conservative strategy. He tried a pair of faux punts and a two-point conversion try when the Cowboys have been down 9 factors and doubtless ought to have simply kicked the additional level. Even on the finish, McCarthy’s resolution to take a seat within the ball and accept a 46-yard area objective may have turned out terribly. McCarthy could be very fortunate the Cowboys obtained a miracle win.
16. Indianapolis Colts (1-1, LW: 21)
The Colts are giving up solely 208 yards per sport. Coming into Monday’s video games, no different protection was permitting fewer than 300 yards per sport. The Jaguars and Vikings, the Colts’ two opponents, every put up 30 factors once they weren’t taking part in Indianapolis. Perhaps the Colts have a very good protection.
15. Chicago Bears (2-0, LW: 15)
David Montgomery had his finest sport as a professional, with 127 complete yards and a landing. Montgomery must hold taking part in like that as a result of there’s not a ton else to like concerning the offense. The Bears have two very shut wins, and no staff will flip down 2-0, however they’ll must play higher going ahead.
14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-1, LW: 19)
It’s not simple to take a 12 months off of NFL soccer and play properly instantly. The final time Rob Gronkowski performed like the longer term Corridor of Famer he’s was the 2017 season. He regarded like he misplaced one thing in 2018 (although he completed with a flourish) after which was out all final season. He got here again and has simply two catches for 11 yards, together with no catches in Week 2.
13. Las Vegas Raiders (2-0, LW: 20)
No matter comes subsequent, Monday evening’s win over the Saints within the Las Vegas dwelling opener shall be a win that has a particular place in franchise historical past. And don’t sleep on the Raiders; perhaps what comes subsequent goes to be higher than we anticipated earlier than the season. It is a enjoyable staff.
12. Arizona Cardinals (2-0, LW: 13)
Rookie first-round decide Isaiah Simmons performed simply seven snaps on protection towards Washington and his solely stat was a special-teams sort out. Simmons is a proficient participant and it’s stunning how little he’s taking part in. The Cardinals haven’t wanted him but however they’ll seemingly want some contribution from him earlier than the season is completed.
11. San Francisco 49ers (1-1, LW: 8)
A part of the Tremendous Bowl hangover is that it’s powerful to keep away from dangerous damage luck two years in a row. The 49ers had some accidents final season. They’ve all of the accidents this season. Nick Bosa isn’t coming again, however guys like Jimmy Garoppolo, Richard Sherman, George Kittle and Raheem Mostert ought to return comparatively quickly. The 49ers simply have to carry on till they get some gamers again.
10. New England Patriots (1-1, LW: 9)
Too usually, in lots of issues in life, we choose outcomes and never the method of creating the choice. The Patriots’ finest play is Cam Newton on the objective line. He’s nice in that space of the sphere. The Seahawks made an excellent play and stopped it. It occurs. The decision was simply wonderful.
9. Tennessee Titans (2-0, LW: 10)
Ryan Tannehill’s final 9 regular-season video games: 22 touchdowns, two interceptions, 127.Three passer score. He has had solely two video games with a passer score underneath 100, and the bottom was 92.2. In some unspecified time in the future we’ll have to begin giving him some credit score.
8. New Orleans Saints (1-1, LW: 3)
It’s laborious to lose a participant like Michael Thomas. Taking part in the Raiders of their first sport in Las Vegas was a tricky spot. Nonetheless, it’s regarding they have been fully outplayed after taking a 10-Zero lead. No trigger for panic but and I’m not dropping them too far but, but it surely’s potential the Saints aren’t fairly as dominant as anticipated.
7. Los Angeles Rams (2-0, LW: 11)
Sean McVay did an excellent job self-scouting within the offseason. The Rams’ offensive revival has been on account of many components, together with using quicker tempo, spreading the ball round, much less predictability in personnel groupings and likewise committing to creating late 2019 breakout Tyler Higbee a focus of the offense. There’s a cause McVay is so extremely revered.
6. Inexperienced Bay Packers (2-0, LW: 7)
Aaron Jones’ massive day will result in extra dialogue about what the Packers ought to do together with his contract. In the event that they pay him, it makes taking A.J. Dillon within the second spherical appear to be a waste. And operating again contracts not often work out. In the event that they don’t pay Jones, they’re transferring on from a extremely productive participant and will remorse it, a minimum of within the brief time period. It’s a tricky spot to be in.
5. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-0, LW: 5)
The Steelers most likely ought to have put the Broncos away prior to they did, however they’re nonetheless 2-Zero and must be considerably favored in three of their subsequent 4 video games (vs. Texans, at Titans, vs. Eagles, vs. Browns) earlier than the primary of two improbable matchups towards the Ravens.
4. Seattle Seahawks (2-0, LW: 6)
If Russell Wilson wins an MVP this season, a minimum of a part of the reason being the remainder of the NFL let DK Metcalf fall to late within the second spherical of the 2019 draft. Metcalf obtained the most effective of final season’s NFL defensive participant of the 12 months Stephon Gilmore on Sunday evening. He is perhaps a top-10 receiver already.
3. Buffalo Payments (2-0, LW: 4)
Stefon Diggs put up 153 yards and a landing on Sunday. It’s cheap to suppose they overpaid within the commerce to get Diggs from the Vikings, but it surely was a daring, aggressive transfer for a staff that noticed its window to win a division title (and perhaps extra) opening up. It’s laborious to discover a difference-making receiver like Diggs they usually gained’t come low cost if they’re obtainable.
2. Kansas Metropolis Chiefs (2-0, LW: 2)
The perfect a part of the Chiefs’ comeback win on Sunday is perhaps that it didn’t take any luster off of their Week Three matchup towards …
1. Baltimore Ravens (2-0, LW: 1)
The Chiefs-Ravens sport subsequent Monday evening goes to be a magnificence. No soccer fan ought to miss it.

4 big changes in Mel Kiper’s latest NFL mock draft
Tumblr media
If the Dolphins want Tua, they may have to trade up from the No. 5 pick.
Mel Kiper knows the 2020 NFL Draft really starts with the Detroit Lions.
Barring a major upset, the Bengals will select quarterback Joe Burrow with the first pick. Washington will follow with can’t-miss pass rusher Chase Young at No. 2. Then? That’s where things get interesting.
Kiper’s latest mock draft has the Lions shaking up the draft order and stealing the apple of the Dolphins’ eye by making Alabama star Tua Tagovailoa the third overall pick of 2020. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be playing in Detroit, though. Here’s what Kiper had to say about how this year’s draft is shaping up.
The Lions have a ton of Tua leverage with the No. 3 pick
It might be hard to justify the Lions selecting Tagovailoa in 2020. Detroit could draft the Alabama QB and work to trade Matthew Stafford — a strategy general manager Bob Quinn denies is on his agenda — but Stafford’s massive dead cap hit ($33 million) will make that a tough pill to swallow. The Lions could also opt to keep both on the roster and bring Tagovailoa along slowly behind him before handing him the reins in 2021.
The Lions have several needs to address in this year’s draft, and quarterback isn’t really one of them. Instead, Detroit could shore up the roster elsewhere by driving up a bidding war as teams look to trade up the draft board for a quarterback.
The Chargers could move up from the sixth pick to find their Philip Rivers replacement. The Panthers could shut the door on the Cam Newton era by moving up from the No. 7 slot. The Colts could push their way to the top of the draft if they believe Jacoby Brissett’s season-ending slump was more indicative of his ceiling as a passer. Even the Dolphins could ship off second-round picks to move up from fifth to third and prevent other teams from cutting the line and drafting their guy.
All this has Kiper convinced Tagovailoa — who Kiper had previously slotted in as the fifth pick — won’t last to No. 4. That could be a boon for the Giants, who would get potential lockdown cornerback Jeff Okudah to star in their secondary.
This differs from SB Nation draft expert Dan Kadar’s mock, where Okudah goes to the Lions at No. 3 and Tagovailoa is left waiting for the Dolphins two picks later.
Kiper projects four first-round QBs in 2020 — but no Jordan Love
Burrow and Tagovailoa are both top-three picks in Kiper’s estimation, but Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert won’t be far behind. Kiper has Miami finish off Herbert’s impressive pre-draft rise by making him the fifth pick of 2020 (Kadar has him on the board slightly longer, going sixth to the Chargers). He’ll have the chance to learn the ropes under veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick before ostensibly becoming head coach Brian Flores’ top option in 2021.
That run on quarterbacks hits a dry patch from picks 6-22 before Kiper turns to the Patriots. He’s got Washington signal caller Jacob Eason as Tom Brady’s heir apparent in New England (though he’d have to beat out 2019 fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham). Eason could wind up filling an immediate role in Foxborough — the Patriots will know whether Brady is returning for a 21st season as a Patriot or departing in free agency well before the draft takes place.
That’s it for Kiper’s first-round QBs, which means mercurial Utah State passer Jordan Love would have to wait until Day 2 to hear his name called. Love had been previously slotted in at the 24th pick to the Saints in Kiper’s Jan. 24 mock and has been a regular prediction in Kadar’s drafts.
The ESPN scribe has New Orleans selecting Auburn cornerback Noah Igbinoghene instead, but his post went live before Drew Brees made his 2020 return official. The Saints could be in the market for a franchise quarterback to develop behind him as he ventures further into his 40s.
The Vikings get a legacy pick
Minneapolis is familiar territory for the Winfield family. Antoine Winfield was a three-time Pro Bowler in nine seasons with the Vikings. His son, Antoine Winfield, Jr., was an All-Big Ten defensive back at the University of Minnesota. If Kiper’s prediction is correct, he won’t have to move very far to start his pro career.
Kiper’s mock draft slots Winfield to Minnesota with the 25th pick of the draft, revamping the Vikings’ pass defense with a versatile safety who can excel in every phase of the game. That would be a boon for a club in need of immediate, low-cost help in the face of a foreboding salary cap situation that threatens to strip Minnesota of several impact veterans.
Winfield would be the fifth defensive back off the board in Kiper’s scenario, and one of seven taken on Day 1 this spring.
Kiper thinks Justin Madubuike will be 2020’s fastest pre-draft riser
The Texas A&M defensive lineman had been a rock in the middle of the Aggie defense the last two seasons, generating 22 tackles for loss and 11 sacks in 24 games. At 6’4 and 305 pounds, he brings good size for his position and is explosive enough to blast his way into the backfield and stop runs behind the line of scrimmage.
Despite all that, Madubuike hasn’t been much of a name in the mock draft horizon this winter. Kadar doesn’t have him as a first-rounder in his latest draft. Kiper colleague Todd McShay’s most recent mock draft also leaves him out.
Kiper believes that will change during the pre-draft process. He expects Madubuike to have a solid NFL Combine and pro day performance that would vault him into the 27th pick for a Seahawks team in need of pass-rushing help. Madubuike could either help replace Jadeveon Clowney should he leave as a free agent, or team up with the former No. 1 overall pick to help rebuild a once-fearsome defense in Seattle.
