Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series continues to torpedo itself with this third instalment. While the first sequel wasn’t good, at least it was trying something different. Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III is little more than a generic slasher movie. Ironically, this makes it the mirror opposite of the original in many ways.
Michelle (Kate Hodge) and Ryan (William Butler) are travelling through Texas when they stop at the Last Chance Gas Station. There they meet its greasy owner, Alfredo (Tom Everett), and a hitchhiker named Tex (Viggo Mortensen ?!). Following one of Tex’s shortcuts, they meet a survivalist named Benny (Ken Foree) and the serial killer Leatherface (R. A. Mihailoff), along with his family of murderous cannibals.
Originally rated X for its gore and violence (in fact, this was the last film to receive an X rating before it's rebranding as NC-17), for years, Leatherface was only available in the truncated R version. Now, you get to see it all in the uncensored DVD release. If you’re a psychopath looking for masturbatory material, here you go. The objective doesn’t appear to be to scare, but to nauseate. The film has so many prolonged shots of flesh being carved and people being tortured. It’s a horror movie, I know. In interviews, director Jeff Burr has stated he knew he would be offending some viewers but did it anyway. I kind of respect this mentality. Those who try and make movies for everyone often end up making movies for no one. The problem isn't that this movie is sadistic… it's that it isn't sadistic AND good. You're never invested in the characters. They’re just meat for the grinder, props whose stupidity is amplified to ensure they'll wind up in specific scenarios which will get them killed or captured. I know the characters don’t know they’re in a horror movie, but come on, that excuse only goes so far.
While 1974's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre featured little gore, sudden terror and a suffocating atmosphere of dread, this is a cartoon. Leatherface has a new high-tech chainsaw, characters die from injuries they should easily survive and others survive blows that should obviously be fatal. The performances are poor. Victims’ shrieks of terror seem muted and the psychopaths are way over-the-top, particularly a little girl (Jennifer Banko), who must have been included solely for shock value. Even Leatherface is overdone with his mismatched grin - he tends to appear from off-screen whenever a scare is convenient. At least the titular killer brings us the film’s one good scene, a gag in which he is playing with a Speak-and-Spell.
While there is plenty of gore to appease those who care more about blood and guts than anything else, even they will likely recognize Leatherface as a pale retread. Though Ken Foree's Benny can be engaging as he actually does more than run around idiotically waiting to be butchered, he’s a side character, more of a plot point than a real human being. Worst of all, the film is hardly - if ever – genuinely frightening. Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III is just a cash-grab. (Unrated version on DVD, November 30, 2018)

Our first Con
Well, friends-- we made it.
Our first CON.
For those of you who didn’t get the opportunity to attend, we here at the Riverland’s Podcast found ourselves a the Dark History and Horror Con 2022 in Champaign Urbana.
I’m not sure you’ve ever attended a horror convention before but its was absolutely fantastic and I very highly recommend you make a point of coming to join us next year.
We had the opportunity see an amazing assortment of artists, musicians and actors wandering around the event including a double pare of identical twins -- highlighted by the Harp Sisters.
As someone from out here in The Riverland’s, my most surreal moment has got to be walking across the parking lot of the hotel and seeing Edward Furlong, the actor known for his work in 1991′s Terminator 2, portraying John Conner.
I’m not one for celebrity worship, but it was certainly strange for someone like myself who just doesn’t experience that type of thing often. My favorite by far was drinking in the hotel bar with the other podcasters of “Podcast Row” and looking over to see former pro-wrestler R A Mihailoff aka Leatherface, and from Krampus: The Devil Returns --- And folks, he really is that big.
But more importantly, we got the chance to talk to you. To introduce ourselves first hand to a whole new group of folks who might not have had the chance to hear our stories, but most certainly were excited to know we exist.
And most exciting for us?
Getting to know some of you -- people who have the experiences. Those folks who love horror and love the supernatural and who have brushes with all the weird stuff that happens out here. Those of you who were kind enough to drop by and tell us about your favorite local haunt.
The Infamous Ashmore Estates.
Airtight Bridge.
Springdale Cemetery
.... and many many locations too numerous to list.
Thank you all so much and we look forward to seeing you next year in Champaign-Urbana’s during the next Dark History and Horror Con where we will have a whole new crop of stories for you.
And dont forget to drop by and tell us about your favorite haunted location.

Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)
In today's review. I bring back a killer for the 90s, as I attempt a #positive review of the 1990 reboot, Leatherface #KateHodge #WilliamButler #KenForee #ToniHudson #ViggoMortensen #JoeUnger #RAMihailoff #TomEverett #DuaneWhitaker
It can be impressive how much mileage certain slasher sequels get, you don’t need much, a couple of inventive kills, and you’ve got a franchise lasting decades with little variation. As evidenced with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, despite large gaps between releases, V.H.S sales helped keep the dread alive. They couldn’t stop after the success of the first two films, even if Tobe Hooper couldn’t…

Pumpkinhead 2 Blood Wings (1993)
Every year in October I watch Pumpkinhead 2 Blood Wings. Why? It's not good. In fact in production value its probably less then a quarter as well crafted as the original. But I still fucking love this movie and it is without a doubt my favorite in the series (not hard since the other sequels are totally forgettable) . Its very hard to explain my love for this movie and I don't really expect to convince you but I need to express my love. Is it the wave of genre cameos that really serve no purpose like making Linnea Quigley, R A Mihailoff and Kane Hodder randoms kills for the monster. Is it that the mayor of the town is played by Roger Clinton brother of Bill Clinton and is obviously making fun of him in the process IS it that Punky Brewster her self is all grown up in this as the "bad girl" of these hilariously stereotype "teens" in a horror movie? Is it that the also stereotypical blonde good girl of the "teen" group is the daughter of a Monkee?
Tumblr media
IS IT that they accept they have half the budget but also have no reason to hide the monster so basically Pumpkinhead is a big wobbly armed rubber monster?
Tumblr media
IS IT that basically its the plots of imagry of Pet Semetery , Nightmare on Elm Street and Rawhead Rex in one film but only using the bare minimum of these elements making it more of a slasher then a dark folktale? Is it the total lack of suspense but yet never being boring? Is it that Gloria Hendry from Black Belt Jones does not want to be in this movie and you can tell as while Andrew Robinson is acting the hell out of every scene even if the lines are totally stupid? IISSSS IT because of that hilarious video game that shows Pumpkinhead dancing to the music that plays at the beginning of this movie? I don't know.
Tumblr media
Maybe its none of those things, maybe its ALL of those things. So innocently dumb while trying so hard to make a modern horror icon they just end up making a 1950s Corman beach monster movie by mistake. Fuck I love Pumpkinhead 2 BLOOD WINGS! It really fits in my year spoopy viewing. I may be crazy but Im sure someone out there feels me. Now stay safe kids, don't set fire to old witches and go wash your hands.
youtube
In closing may I say this.. Pumpkinhead 2 is the movie about a deformed child that dies and comes back as a ghost but the ghost is a Dinosaur. This is the plot but no one making the feel seems to be aware of this.
