Art tour of my room/studio! I caught the bug for buying little pieces from other artists to brighten up my space a few years ago – it’s addicting! (and wonderful!) I want to make sure I get everyone’s names in here (at least the ones who have an online presence), so be ready for a long post!
It always feels a little ignomious hanging art in my bathroom, but I get distracted brushing my teeth a lot so it’s important there’s nice stuff to look at! I love my big crocodile print by Amanda Myers so much. He’s so Green and so lovely and he has so many teeth to contemplate while I brush my own.
I felt a little bad putting this magnificent tiger by Paleopanthera (paleopanthera.com) above the toilet, but the colors just work so nice and it makes my bathroom look so rad ;~; Do you think the tiger’s mad at me? Does he look mad?
I got this little scrollwork shelf from ScrollSawArtbyBC (etsy) and I love it so much! Makes a perfect little nook for my sink things~
And who is this peeking out from some of my nature treasures? Why it’s one of Becca Jane’s little blue snakes (BeccaJane.com). One day I’m going to save up my pennies and buy one of her big beautiful platters and on it I will serve the prettiest of pastas~
Also adorning my nature shelf is this beautiful mix-media plaque by Cephasparagus (insta). She also seems to adore collecting little bits of nature like an aesthetic magpie - my kind of gal!
I have a bevy of these little animal prints by Amanda Myers (Admers on etsy) on my walls – I love how combine with my pressed leaves and flowers to bring that "forest hermit" vibe I've always strived for.
The stained glass folk flower piece is from Leadleaf_ (insta) - it really makes my little terrarium corner look cozy and magical!
I got my Artistic License and my Poetic License from Kenspeckle Press (kenspeckleletterpress.com) - they didn’t even make me take an aesthetics test or metaphorically parallel park. (Plus another beautiful thank you card from Amanda Myers.)
The little kitty mug from Heikala (heikala.com) is what I drink iced cocoa from almost daily. I like how the ice clicks on the enamel <3
I still maintain that the embroidered flower pendant from DandelionDoiley (etsy) is the cutest thing that I own. Feels like holding a jewel! And the Hope pendant from BonbiForest (etsy) is such a lovely design with cheerful colors <3 The hummingbird I got from a local artist on a trip to Yellowstone, and the gold pendant is from a local artist where I live!

Hai hai i know this is a teensy bit of an odd ask and idk if we've sent one like it before however ugmhb we're currently looking into going to uni to get a degree in something along the lines of game art/concept art/illustration and from your experience what is that sort of environment like? Obligatory I'm from the UK so there will be differences between uhgmm how that works but youknow. Trying to figure out what to do after I leave college <- perishes
okay, so i'm in game design/recently swapped to interactive narrative, so i'm not sure how much of this is going to be similar. i'm coming at this from the perspective of someone in my school's game studio, occasionally rooming with game art students. regardless, i hope this advice is going to be useful anyways:
from my understanding, the most important thing that people are looking for when it comes to hiring people into the games industry is your collaborative ability. lots of people think about game making as an idea in their mind that they and they alone translate onto paper. and that simply is not the case. things will pass between hands all the time. feedback will be given and expected to be received. you will have So many more meetings than you're expecting to have and they will probably be pretty long.
hirers are going to want to know that you can work with a group. prioritize figuring out the sorts of people you can gel with. make sure you have something for a portfolio that demonstrates your teamwork. i would say something like a MAP or a Zine would be a good example of that that someone might have outside of school, but i imagine the curriculum should give you something like that to add to your resume regardless.
speaking of MAPs and Zines, they're a really good example of another important thing: people want to know that you can do things in a timely manner. it's one thing to have a beautiful roster of concept art and visuals, but if they took you a year each to do, no one's going to want to hire you. projects that demonstrate you can produce good work in a timely manner are a really good look for you. i would say things like speedpaints would be a good thing to have on a personal website/portfolio to demonstrate your workflow in that regard.
i am realizing that i am accidentally talking more about career prep than the college experience um. that probably says something about me. that i'm not going to get into right now.
i would say this: seek out a school that you think will give you not only the lessons, but assignments that bolster your resume so you'll have something to help you get a job out of college. lots of people say "school is a scam because you can learn things outside of it", which is true, but the benefit of school is having a safe and structured environment to not only learn, but to prep yourself for the future.
honestly, every game artist i've met has been rad as hell. they have a pretty rigorous class schedule, but i think we all have a pretty rigorous class schedule, so i don't think that's anything standout.
my solitary warning would be, if you're fem presenting, watch out!!! the game industry is very male dominated, and even at my school that boasts inclusivity and acceptance for all, all of my teachers are male, and many of them are misogynistic. i've heard from my advisor that there are teachers who pull cis male students aside and tell them that they aren't cut out for the career field because they have 'feminine' habits or mannerisms. you're going to have to pull your weight and stand your ground.

I’ll admit I am extremely biased. Anyway here’s my longer review. I give Venom 3: The Last Dance “Til Death do us Part” 8.75/10 stars and 13/10 fun stars. This movie is adapting so much from the comics with its own spin appropriate for what is imho, simply an au movie run of the comics.
I do not go to Venom movies for the plot. I go to them to watch sweaty depressed Eddie Brock go thru situations with his situationship partner who happens to be a large alien shadow puppy who loves violence and has extremely low impulse control. This ADHD couple is here to bring me 2 hours of chaos with a three stings attaching the scenes together. I am here to see as many comic Easter eggs as they can cram in and keep plenty of room form Venom/Eddie antics.
That the there is a coherent plot is a bonus. And it’s coherent. Eddie and Venom have to go on the run from the cops -for murder carnage did- and Venoms evil father, Knull, who wants to destroy them and use the magic power of their love to release himself -it was cemented when Venom brought Eddie back to life in the last film. Knull sends his evil creature daughters, whose design invokes various giant insectoid aliens (btw 10/10 on that design) who eat symbiotes -called xenophoges btw. The government is also hunting them for the crimes but more bc they want to control symbiotes and have Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mr military man named Rex, and his lesbian scientist coworkers. One loves Christmas pins her mom makes her and the other has a lightening scare that immobilized her left arm and killed her genius brother. They love symbiotes probably more than people, this annoys Rex. Eddie has decided he doesn’t want to stay in Mexico Bc fuck that, instead he makes the terrible decision -as he is extremely self destructive with his own side of very impulsive- to go to NY. Where he has been banned, but he’s got dirt on a judge he plans to blackmail to solve his problems. On the way he meets a family of hippies and has the most heartwarming scene with their young son. I won’t tell you more that’s the first half of set up, go watch and finish reading this post. I loved every second. I keep saying this movie is actually relishing being a comic book movie and doing it well. This one is for comic fans as well as fans of the franchise. I can’t help anyone whose not into that. Bye!
Strange hippy ufo enthusiast family is an “absofuckingly yes” from me. Lesbian science partners was a hit, I hope the one lady gets a new symbiote soon and they can become anti-hero polycule wives or something. Ghost symbiote was another hit, that’s rad! Do it again! I don’t need to know anything else. Knull and his evil daughters who eat symbiotes in that monster fucker heaven beautifully rendered dark realm was an unexpected and fantastic treat. For me! Mrs. Chen remains on top.
Parting and Tragedy only makes love stronger. The reason they are saying they have to end it here is bc they need ten years to convince Sony to let Eddie and Venom make out and declare their love. And then to convince them to let them get married and give birth to symbiotes. Bc that’s all it’s missing and I am not surprised I know how these studios work. They’re cowards who think they can appeal to more demographic but that’s lame! You can’t make everything for everyone. Appeal to the demographic you’ve got and they’ve got monster hunters and others into Venom for a variety of reasons too long to list. Appeal to the freaks we want this plz.
Anyway. I had a great time. I’ve written the resurrections and reunions in my heart already.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986)
Tumblr media
A troubled production that released to such audience apathy that John Carpenter vowed to never work for Hollywood studios ever again, it is now widely considered possibly his best movie, and an action-comedy classic that only 1980s Hollywood could produce. High praise indeed.
I never saw it before now, because it was one of those movies that my Gen X older cousins wouldn't shut up about, and they were bullies and idiots. Plus, as much as I like kung fu movies and screwball comedies, any clips of this I've seen over the years looked like sarcastic nonsense, like some "serious" filmmaker making fun of cool crazy things they don't appreciate. I was prepared to be disappointed.
I was not. This movie is goddamn delightful.
Tumblr media
What I didn't know was that W. D. Richter (professional script doctor and director of Buckaroo Banzai) "adapted" the script from the orginal, which most people involved classify as a terrible "cowboys battle Chinese demons" thing that was literally written by guys who had no idea what they were doing. I've gotten into actual fights defending Buckaroo Banzai, a movie almost entirely defined as a good, fun movie based on a wilfully confusing mess of a script. I would daresay the ONLY reason BTiLC works is because Richter dragged it over the conceptual finish line, with Carpenter doing his magic to make that into a coherent 90 minute movie with a reasonable budget.
Absolutely none of this should work. And it obviously still didn't, for most of the general audience.
The plot is simple enough - an ancient demon warlord who has been cursed to live as an increasingly-decrepit old man finally has an opportunity to break the curse, and then conquer the world with his not-so-secret army of kung fu wizards. And it's up to small-time Chinatown hustler Wang Chi, his friend - blowhard freelance truck driver Jack Burton - and their gang of misfit friends, to take him down. But all this is just a framework on which to hang constant digressions into goofball exposition about Chinese mythology, chaotic street fights between thugs and kung fu gangs and wizards, and then everyone is running around a neon maze filled with demons and monsters and guns. It feels like a movie written by a white 14 yo who just watched his first Young Jackie Chan movie, and is copying the bad translation verbatim, but with himself being there to crack wise about how weird and cool this all is.
Tumblr media
Is this movie racist? I don't know. Probably. It is at least racially insensitive, and willfully inaccurate about...everything. But everything, from the production design and acting and direction, is so gleefully excited about the total radness of it all that it comes across as stupid whizbang fun.
And it isn't without progressive elements for 1986. The cast is mostly Asian-American actors playing well-rounded, coherent characters. Kurt Russell as Jack Burton is the point-of-view protagonist, but he certainly isn't the hero of the story, and spends the whole movie being a loveable idiot sidekick in a world he is utterly incapable of dealing with. And the focus on him seems to have been a studio note, and something both Carpenter and Russell thought was problematic.
I'm a white American so it is inevitable I don't appreciate how offensive this is. I was also raised in the 90s "bastardized ninja" landscape, so I have childhood programming that triggers every time I see Mortal Kombat-style shit, and I love it emotionally, even if I understand now how gross it is.
And I have the added complication of this sort of property in childhood fostering an interest that led me to later learn about actual Chinese and Japanese mythology and religion and culture. Which doesn't justify anything, it's just how it happened and I'm a product of that, for good and ill.
Tumblr media
All that said, Big Trouble in Little China is to me beautifully made, exciting and fun, perfectly paced, and as good a version of this dated insensitive genre of thing as there is. Just on a technical level, it may seriously be John Carpenter's best, given the time and budget constraints he was forced to work under. This movie should be absolute garbage, and it isn't, and that's because Carpenter broke himself to make that happen. And when it wasn't rewarded, he rightfully told Hollywood to go fuck itself, and the rest is history.
I have no idea if anyone under the age of 30 would think this movie is anything but a cringey relic of a more simple, but more insensitive, time. I still think as a production it is a good movie, and an example of how to do a lot with little, including filming coherent and meaningful action scenes.
...Even if those scenes are babbling gangs of Chinese ninjas (yes) shooting MAC-10s at indestructible flying lightning wizards in rediculous douli hats and metal claws, in the police-free back alleys of San Franciso's Chinatown.
Tumblr media
They should really make that original script about cowboys fighting Chinese demons. Give it to a Hong Kong director with a $30 million budget and let them go wild. It would no doubt be at least as fun and funny as this, if not equally embarrassingly stupid.

heavily respect game devs who move onto new games instead of updating or dlc-ing their first game forever
i mean yes my favorite games are games that have been updated for years on end lol but like you can do so many NEW things, and still keep some of the cool ideas you've had
like, i love what bytten studio seems to have done with lennas inception and cassette beasts. plausibly within some same multiverse, using similar elements but in different contexts, and its rad ! its all experimental and theyre both very different ! when it comes to updating a game, i feel like you really have to commit to... acknowledging that as you fix things, things will continue to need fixing, and you'll need to try and stay on top of keeping the cohesion. if the game is mostly cohesive but has some parts where it lacks and feels a bit wonky, those parts will stand out a LOT, and if you dont address core problems and possibly accept fundamentally changing some aspects of your game? it'll just be kinda hard for people to accept fun little additions, because well. theres just a lot of grander issues of the past that need to be fixed tldr i dont think you can really sustain a game healthily by just supplying it new content; you need to also go back and bring old things up to some standards. but if you move on, then... it honestly feels finer having those issues, because its like "well thats just part of the game" and it doesnt stand out so heavily... like games that require wikis for everything dont have a weird feeling of it standing out compared to a game where you need to wiki one singular damn mechanic because its very weird and possibly just a remnant of older design and theres... different ages of the game begin to clash the more you develop for it this is kinda just my thoughts on minecraft, terraria, and stardew valley... all amalgam'd into one post. and also ofc bytten studio games let it be known though, that milking a series is not exclusive to either of these: see FNAF and GTA V. milking the game in separate ways

some things I’m looking forward to in the inseparables:
—while this is small and irrelevant to the story itself, I heard there will be thunder and bigfoot easter eggs and im so ready to spot those out
—i am very curious as to how these toys work. i reckon they will be similar to toy story for obvious reasons, however I’m getting skeptical ideas from the various clips released on whether or not they can actually be seen alive and by who. cause the raccoons and horse can see them, but the dog can’t. and they seem to be willingly choosing to be animated and non-animated since they run a play. idk it’s confusing, im just curious haha.
—THE ACTION SEQUENCES AND the musical numbers cause YOU KNOW that shit is going to blow our minds with how amazing the score and soundtrack sounds
—RELATED but I wanna see "Mop Fight!" cause I didn’t know what it was before but now I am theorizing it’s a little play-brawl between Don and Dee and I just wanna see them be goofy lol. also "The Day We Meet a Friend" better actually be in the movie and not a credits song cause I SWEAR ITS A CHARACTER SINGING IT
—I JUST WANT MY SAPPY PLATONIC FRIENDSHIP LOVE STORY with all the silly, delightful, high staked, adventurous, pure unadulterated fun. HAND THEM OVER
—I honestly just wanna learn more about Dee and the other side puppet characters, they seem so cool hahahah
—the crooks. they seem so goofy and I love it. also I love how they look, not just cause they’re goth (which is rad), but also because their features and design literally scream nWave. the studio’s style is awesome, and I’m pretty sure they’re utilizing it here again (they changed it up for chickenhare I believe since they are converting to the universal cgi style, which admittedly is kinda lame, that movie and its designs still slap hard tho don’t get me wrong, but I like their style I suppose).
—another obvious one but, I really wanna know DJ’s backstory, ik it’s gonna be sad and aaaagh, ;( he’s been alone all his life and I can tell something not-good is going to happen halfway through and I’m aaagh, not ready. he’s so sweet he deserves his new friends <3
—honestly just wanna see what the two mains get up to. as I said before, I just really wanna see their relationship grow, I love those two smmmdndjdnd
that’s all for now, more will come to mind later no doubt
