RJS Mains Answer Writing: A Complete Guide for Law Aspirants
Tumblr media
RJS Mains Answer Writing is a crucial aspect of preparation for the Rajasthan Judicial Services Examination. It focuses on developing the skill to frame structured, concise, and well-reasoned answers within the limited time provided in the mains exam. Since the RJS Mains consists of descriptive papers in law and language subjects, consistent answer writing practice helps aspirants improve presentation, clarity, legal analysis, and time management.

hey! i appreciate you offering me some advice!
i’m workin on my first ever fic (and creative writing for that matter lmao) and i keep running into the same issue
i’m really struggling to come up with plot/story. if i have like key moments or anything i have no issue writing it. i have a few pivotal moments that i want to happen but filling in the moments between them is super hard for me. is there any way to get over this?
Most people have a few key scenes they want to see when they think of writing a story, and it's normal not to know how to link them together. My longfic was my first try at creative fiction. Here's some of the thought process behind how I took my fic from an idea to a story arc!
Planning a story arc is about developing the journey. How did your main character get from Point A to B?
There's so much that goes into this answer, so here's a table of contents for this post:
Writer mental health: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Process
Planning Documents
Question Everything
Study [Part 1] Themes & Motivation
Study [Part 2] The Source Material & Your Inspirations
Study [Part 3] Storycraft
Sidequest: Questions, themes, motivation & storycraft for a story about nothing
🧠Writer mental health: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Process: I've written a post or two about perfectionism and writer mental health. Stories are sort of like plants; writers are like gardeners. No plant or story is fully formed from the jump. If your idea is a plant, then it grows from a seed. If a writer is a gardener, then they're tending a plant that grows over time. Allow yourself to make changes. Be willing to draft the story, edit, then sleep on it for a day or two and edit again before you post it online. You can always press the edit button after publication. I'm starting with this because the sooner you develop a growth mindset, the more likely you will avoid common writer mental health pratfalls. Treat writing like an oil painting in a museum: it began from a sketch and wasn't done all in one go. This point might not feel relevant until you have a bad day as a writer.
📝Planning documents: Take notes on anything and everything. Most writing software will have an outline/table of contents feature to help you organize. One document could be character notes, another might be a timeline of events. One could be scene ideas. Don't feel pressured to explain yourself too much. Treat these documents as scrap paper where you can write down quick ideas and move on; use a bullet point format. As my fic grew, my documents and the contents changed. Mine are now quite messy, and I don't feel the need to use them every chapter. I've outgrown them to a degree, but I still have them for my own reference.
I encourage you to avoid deleting large sections, even if you retcon an idea. Instead, move them to a cutting room floor document. You never know what you're going to need, and though it's in your head right now, you never know what you might forget.
❓Question Everything: While you know who your characters and what some big pivotal scenes are, you need to ask Who, What, When, Where, Why & How about these people and events. If you're from an analytical background such as law or journalism, you were trained to think this way when you learned issue spotting.
Asking these questions about the pivotal scenes and characters will spawn further questions you need to answer, which will then help you figure out what to write in-between the big scenes. If your pivotal scene is a fight between the Hero and a Big Bad, or the Love Interest proposing to the main character, you should ask questions about how the characters got there. What is the conflict between the Hero and the Big Bad? How did the MC and Love Interest meet? What challenges did they have along the way?
The genesis of my fic began with these questions. I thought:
"[What] would I do to fix the canon Fallout 4 [Who] RJ MacCready story?" I was then granted a vision of RJ hiking in the snowy mountains of [Where] Banff National Park. The [Why] was "Med-Tek didn't work out". That partly answered the [When] (North America in the post-apocalypse, over two hundred years since the bombs dropped; at the end of RJ's canon story). [How] did they figure out he needs to go to Banff?
After this idea took hold of my brain, I kept asking questions. As I answered them, I kept notes.
[What] happened at Med-Tek? [How] does RJ get from Boston to Banff? If this fic begins at the end of his canon story, [Who] is the Sole Survivor who helped him through it? [Where] are the key locations in Banff RJ should go and [Why]?
Some questions are more pertinent to explain than others. For example, travel was a big question I had to solve given my story is set in a post-apocalyptic version of our world. Distance travel- unless you're a caravan or the Brotherhood of Steel- is a luxury for your average Wastelander. So I looked up the closest real world equivalent to a vertibird (a tiltrotor aircraft such as the Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey), spent time researching forums and roughly figured out how much fuel and how many stops a vertibird would need between Boston and Banff.
Another writer in the Fallout fandom might not find that pertinent or put in the same research. I value being able to point at something and say, "Oh, I figured that out" to help me better inform my writing.
📗Study [Part 1] Themes & Motivation: Ok, so you're thinking about how the Hero got involved with the Big Bad and the conflict between them; you started with the proposal and marriage between your MC and Love Interest and are now thinking of how they met and how their families react to their partnership.
What are your character's goals and objectives?
What is their background? What makes them think or feel a certain way? Keep in mind that people are complex. A traumatized person isn't always "acting" traumatized to the other characters or the audience.
What are some activities you've observed in real life relationships?
What do your characters like to do when they aren't working?
Who are your characters outside of the events of the story? Who are they before the story? Who are they after? If the story events didn't happen, who would they be instead?
What does one character observe in a room that another will not notice? If one character turns their nose up at a concept or idea, why or why not?
How does your character react under pressure?
What classic literary tropes apply to your character/story? Can you mix and match, or subvert a classic trope?
A love story is rarely ever just a love story. A superhero movie is rarely ever just about superpowers and fighting. What themes, concepts or ideas do you want to explore? Do you have any intellectual curiosities or side hobbies you want to bring to your writing? I really love studying philosophy and enjoy hiking. I am a big fan of works that examine the relationships humans have with nature and each other, as well as the nature of power. These are two things that make my fanfiction different: my characters react to their environments. They observe differences between Banff/Boston and remark upon what happened to Earth when the bombs fell. One of the best compliments I ever had on my fic was from a reader from Alaska who saw their childhood home reflected in Banff's boreal forest; who almost felt as though they could smell the environment by reading the story. My wife @edaworks is a multihyphenate and autodidact- statistician, sociologist, attorney, hobby archaeologist and cosplayer among many other things. In her fic, she brings completely different ideas to Fallout than I do.
📙Study [Part 2] The Source Material & Your Inspirations:
If you struggle to think of ideas relating to the central conflict, you can always return to the source material.
Are there details you notice that you have questions about?
Is there a character interaction that intrigues you?
Is there something you feel the original creator didn't explain? (For me, I wanted to figure out how resource-intensive travel like flight is possible in Fallout.)
Outside of the original text, think about works by other people that inspire you to make your own work. What intrigues you about what they do? How does your fave author or director handle the moments in between the pivotal scenes?
What literature outside of fanfiction do you enjoy? (Some of my fave books are House of Leaves, Infinite Jest, Walden, Le Petit Prince, The Catcher in the Rye, The Road, Ulysses, Blood Meridian and The Lord of the Rings.)
Do you enjoy comedy? Do you have a particular sense of humour because your parents raised you on Laugh-In and Richard Pryor? How can you infuse your story with jokes?
What movies or TV shows had an impact on you as a kid? Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill is a love letter to the stories he was inspired by. In turn, Kill Bill inspired my own story. I'm also influenced by stories about courageous kids navigating a corrupt adult world as well as industrialization vs nature, such as in Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Akira, Princess Mononoke. A lot of what I like is hyperdetailed in some way, be it via dense themes, immaculate cinematography or intricate set design.
What music do you listen do? Are there musicians who explore themes that resonate with the story you're writing?
📚 Study [Part 3] Storycraft: Learn about story structures and basic plot types to help you figure out how to build the overall story arc. Get to know your genre.
Note that you're not required to choose a story structure/plot type/genre. Approach to story delivery depends on cultural tradition, genre and the means with which the story is told. An awareness of them will help you understand how you can build your story.
A radio play, college graduation speech and a bedtime story are all part of the oral tradition. Despite being different stories intended for different audiences, all three could be told with a variety of story structures, or the same one. This chart from r/screenplay compares different approaches to story structure. There's even an entry for the Scientific Method.
If your story falls somewhere in the action/adventure genre, a story structure that might help is Joseph Campbell's monomyth; a three-act structure that watches a hero move from a known to unknown world and back again. Published in 1949, The Hero with a Thousand Faces posited that many heroic works can be boiled down to a similar story structure. You might know it as The Hero's Journey. A good movie for examining The Hero's Journey is Hercules (1997).
Tumblr media
(The above image is from Bookfox. <- The linked page has similar graphics & explanations for other structures.)
Tumblr media
After acquainting ourselves with the Ordinary World of Ancient Greece and Hades' meddling, Weirdo Freak Whom Do Be Too Strong Hercules visits the Temple of Zeus, who tells Herc he can earn his godhood- the Call Of Adventure. Hercules now wants to go the distance and find where he belongs. Zeus sends him to Meet The Mentor, Phil. After a training montage, Hercules and Phil go to Thebes and cross The First Threshold into the Unknown World. Herc wants something, encounters trials & a massive ordeal, then returns to the Known World a changed man.
Let's say one of your pivotal scenes is a huge fight between the Hero and the Big Bad. You could place that almost anywhere on the right side of the wheel. The Call to Adventure could be the first fight. The fights and conflict could get worse until a major fight happens at The Ordeal. Whatever you do, the audience needs to see the pivotal scene contextualized in some way. Whether you begin the story with a fight or are leading up to one, we want to see why it happened. You want to lay the groundwork and context for the pivotal events.
The pivotal events don't mean anything without context to support them, and the audience will not root for your characters if we don't see them struggle and/or aren't given reasons to care or get to know them.
Keep in mind it's not all about drama. Ideally, The Hero's Journey helps an author deliver layers of information that ranges from telling us about the characters' journey/everyday lives to showing the audience details that leads toward the central conflict. Maybe your characters are having a casual lunch and they see people running and screaming down the street. It's out of context in the moment, but it tells the audience, "Something's going on in this story that isn't right". Setup, payoff: the audience learns the reason why things aren't right when you contextualize them through supporting evidence.
These videos [1] [2] by Extra Credits explain the monomyth through an analysis of the video game Journey.
"But Tumblr User twosides--samecoin," you ask, "I'm not writing a heroic journey. What if I want to write a story about people just hanging out?"
👕Sidequest: Questions, themes, motivation & storycraft for a story about nothing
While your Hero doesn't need to slay monsters, some degree of conflict is necessary in most stories. Even the slicest of stories in the slice of life genre like Lucky Star have at least an episode or arc that has some problem to solve.
Seinfeld is known as being "a show about nothing", except that's not quite true. It's a slice of life comedy series that explores the misadventures of a friend group. Many episodes are predicated on telling a certain joke, gag, or are about seeing how the characters act in absurd situations. It's never about nothing. When the show was pitched to NBC, Seinfeld said: "We want to show how a comedian gets his material". The show is about mundane/everyday situations and turning people's worst tendencies into comedy gold.
Example: Seinfeld, season 5 episode 2: The Puffy Shirt
Tumblr media
Who: is Jerry Seinfeld? Jerry is the titular character and a comedian. Also-ran are Elaine and George, as well as Kraemer and his new girlfriend, Leslie.
What: the fuck is that garment? The puffy shirt in question is considered a MacGuffin.
When/Where: Early/mid 90's NYC. Jerry's apartment, a photo studio, a restaurant, The Today Show.
Why: It's funny to see a grown-ass man act a fool about a bad fashion choice because of a miscommunication. He has to go on The Today Show and the host mocks the shirt, leading Jerry to snap about it, which then offends Leslie.
How: Jerry mishears Leslie, who has a very quiet speaking voice. In an effort to be polite, he accidentally agrees to wear the puffy shirt on The Today Show while pretending to understand her.
Themes: Miscommunication, humiliation, consequences arising from false politeness, awkward situations
Motivation: Jerry was motivated to be nice in an effort to accommodate Leslie's low talking volume in order to move the conversation along. He didn't realize he was agreeing to something he didn't want to do. This episode is not just about the humiliation Jerry suffers in the A plot- there are also B and C plots containing their own jokes that add to the tension of the episode, which all fall apart when Jerry snaps. Several plots and character arcs create pacing that feels like a boiling pot by the end of the episode: It's layers of mini jokes that support the main joke, which doesn't get a full punchline until the end. It's still one of the funniest 30 minutes of television ever produced, over three decades later.
Hope something in this ramble helps! Thanks for the ask, @publikoccurrences :)

would you post a snippet of writing that includes Bunny someday if you haven't already? I feel like we know a lot about her but I don't like... have her voice yknow. like her and Deacon or RJ bantering, something that gives us an idea of how she speak/responds to things?
her voice changes quite a bit honestly. it’s part of her whole deal. the masks she’d have to wear, who she’d have to be in front of certain people. she’s good at pretending. she’s someone whose whole career is about being something idealized in front of a camera.
first i will link a post i made awhile ago about my protagonists and voices/languages cus i think it provides a good basic idea of how she speaks. but i do have a few pieces of written dialogue from different points in her life.
pre-war was marked by a lot of code-switching and putting on a certain persona, of finding that balance, that sweet spot between serious big name celebrity and fun-loving party girl.
here’s part of an unfinished prewar interview i was writing; context being that it was a magazine interviewing her after she and nate got married and moved to sanctuary hills.
L&L: Moving between Los Angeles and New York City constantly must’ve been tiring. We were all a little shocked to hear you settled in the suburbs of Boston, of all places. How’s it treating you?
BS: [Laughs] Well, it’s certainly different. I won’t lie, I do find myself missing the hustle and bustle of the city. I’m still getting used to moving a bit more slowly, working a little less. But I have Nate with me, and I know he’s more than willing to show me everything Massachusetts has to offer.
[Nate squeezes her shoulder]
[…]
L&L: Finally, one last thing we’ve been dying to talk to you about. There’s been rumors that your longtime manager and friend, Nora Loveday, disapproved of your marriage to Mr. Delaney. Any truth to those claims?
BS: Oh, no, no. Nora is my best friend! She was even my maid of honor. Any kind of assertion otherwise is just someone trying to drum up gossip where there isn’t any. She’ll always support me, and I know I can always count on her. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.
ND: The handful of times I’ve met Nora, I can tell she cares about Bunny a lot. She just wants what’s best for her; we all do.
L&L: Am I hearing a twinge of jealousy in your voice, Mr. Delaney? [Laughs]
ND: I’m just protective of my girl, what can I say?
BS: [Interjecting] I promise you there is no bad blood between any of us. I love Nora dearly. I’m just taking a break from work to focus on my family. Don’t worry, the world hasn’t seen the last of Bunny Santos. [She flashes that million-dollar smile]
ND: And it better be ready for Nate Delaney too.
so here i wanted it very clear that she’s putting on a very professional façade, almost too much. still quick on her feet and smiling, but still a stern undercurrent. a sense of feeling held back. bunny knows how to talk to get what she wants, how to talk to put on a certain air. like i said in my linked post, she just has a strong command of her voice as a tool. but also being around nate just burns her out.
early post-war is kinda similar in the sense that she’s. well. pretending. she doesn’t trust anyone completely yet, she doesn’t want them to get any sort of upper hand. she’s guarded, but she’s also a lot more…blunt? she’s not worried about hurting anyone’s sensibilities so to speak—she just wants answers. she’s caught on quickly to how the wasteland seems to operate. she takes stock of who she’s talking to and figures out how to play it then.
as time goes on and she starts to make close friends, especially as the main story comes to a close, her true self begins to shine through. she clearly cares deeply about them, she loves to make them laugh. gives them hugs and kisses. she’s not necessarily spilling her guts about everything to them but she’s sincerely willing to listen to their issues if they wanna talk.
here’s some post-canon stuff, specifically between her and maccready.
“You look pale.” he says flatly.
Bunny was used to Maccready’s bluntness—hell, she’d be worried if he didn’t give it to her straight. Still, being subjected to any type of caustic attitude made her stomach turn even more. He never pulled punches, and around him, neither did she.
“I’m fine.” she replies. She clears her throat, feigning nonchalance. Like she didn’t just vomit in front of him. Like she still doesn’t taste bile in her mouth.
Maccready blinks, studies her a moment.
And suddenly he smirks to himself, and Bunny feels exposed at the sound of his contented sigh, like he knows something she doesn’t—or like he’s figured her out.
[…….]
…in that trademark tone, but she can tell he’s making a conscious effort to soften the blow. His concern is enough to make her nauseous all over again. That voice he uses that reminds her he’s a parent, too.
like i’ve said before, their dynamic is a lot more comparable to siblings, and though they like to give each other a hard time, there’s a very clear sense of concern and care between them. sometimes she finds it hard to hide things from him specifically because he confides in her so much.
anyway this is probably getting long enough and i’m worried i still haven’t answered the question well😭 i wish i could beam my thoughts directly into y’all’s heads or something. i hope her voice comes across clearly and i’m really sorry if it hasn’t!! bunny is someone who’s clever, quick, flirty, and loves to laugh. she’s got a super raunchy sense of humor but can pretend to be just about anyone if the occasion calls for it.
and here’s bonus posts i wanna link cus again i think they’re just good for understanding how she talks and responds to others, notably deacon:
deacon’s affinity conversation
late nite chats
inside jokes
accepting the wasteland
bunny and robobrains/the honeymoon
+ additional note on the honeymoon
the second wedding
ok that’s probably enough. smiles

After Rex Dangervest was defeated and peace was restored to the shared Lego Universe, the queen of the Systar System brought Unikitty to her new kingdom, a place known as the Unikingdom. She made new friends and began to rule over the kingdom for about a year. One of her new friends, a fox by the name of Dr Fox, accidentally used her science to bring back the man who threatened the world a year prior. The return of this potential threat to all brickkind is the catalyst for changes that threaten to shake the world Unikitty is ruling over to its core.

After a series of events, the gang has settled down. They have lived in harmony and peace for decades and a new generation of adventurers is ready to learn about the world around them.
This blog takes place 25 years after the events of Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. As such, characters may not act like you might expect. I promise I understand the characters I write.
I rp! Your interactions change the story.

I do not tolerate hate speech of any kind. Any hateful comments get the block.
I do not want anything to do with TLM shipping culture. There is a specific ship in The Lego Movie fandom that is incredibly divisive. No Chronoverse content contains that ship. The only ships I care to deal with are either established in canon or raptorclip. Keep me out of the shipping drama.
Please tag anything that references Inanimate Insanity or any other Object Show. This isn't a DNI situation. I just don't want to see that fandom for personal reasons.
The person behind the screen doesn’t exist beyond this and occasional administrative posts. I’m here to run a blog for my AU. I will not answer non-AU related questions.
Just be respectful. I block rarely, but I usually only blocked because I don’t want to interact. To me, blocking is defensive.

My upload schedule when actively uploading fics is, unless announced, Friday evenings. I am in Eastern Standard Time.
All uploads are going to be simultaneously released on Tumblr and AO3.
Once the next chapter is uploaded, time moves to reflect that chaper.
Anyone found in the characters section is a viable character to ask questions! Just make sure you put somewhere in your ask which character the question is addressed to. I reblog ask memes to make things easier for people to get involved!
If you're going to reblog these ask memes, either send me an ask if you're re-blogging directly from me or reblog from the source. I will do the same for you.
This blog does accept magic anons. However we are also a PG blog. I will not do any m!a or answer any questions that are of a not safe for work nature.
My tag list is in the links, but the main tag I use for the chronoverse is #thechronoverse or #Chronoverse AU. Not terribly catchy, I know. The Chronoverse is a name for a series of classic video games (Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, ect) ad I don’t want to flood their tags with my stuff.

the nona incident :> ?
[@biptome speaking]
TNI! MY BELOVED MAIN WIP <333 i can actually offer some writing for this one bc i'm in my rj feels and wanted to write some backstory stuff for him unrelated to the actual plot of the story :)
“Have you ever thought about starting your own band?” Liv asked, her golden brows furrowed in focus as she studied RJ’s face before putting her pencil to a fresh page of her sketchbook. RJ wasn’t the blushing type, but something about that scrutinizing gaze made his cheeks go warm. He looked down and busied himself with rubbing gentle little circles into her knee with his thumb before answering her question. “Eh, I’m not really the ‘start a band’ type. Maybe Duke would, though.” Liv’s pencil made harsh, crisp scratching noises against the paper. Her sketches always looked aggressive and angry, so messy they somehow managed to appear clinically precise. “I wouldn’t know. He doesn’t talk to me.”
this fic is mostly just self-indulgent fun stuff, but there's also some duke backstory/context stuff in there if you squint. i probably won't ever post the full thing on here, though, so i guess that doesn't really matter LMAO

YUPPPPPP JAEHYUN IS CONFIRMED TO BE A MAIN CHARACTER IN “6 Hours Later, You’ll Die.” WHICH IS LIKE A MYSTERY THRILLER apparently his character is a killer who pretends to be nice (and the cute thing is when dojaejung had a fancon here in manila, they were asked about what genre would they like to see jaehyun in and they said mystery because they wanna see jaehyun’s evil or creepy smile!!! they were teasing BECAUSE THEY KNEW omfg i’m so excited to see how jaehyun will act out for this role and i’m hoping that it’s his real big break for his acting career considering dear m’s difficulties because of her co-actress’ issue 😭)
2 major Ws for us today for receiving this news about jae and us receiving a devoted update 🥳 but i feel bad for being happy when you had the update as a distraction for what you’re going through. i hope you’re taking care of yourself despite what happened 🩷 i hope that u heal and feel better soon!
just some Qs!!! what are some things up for devoted now? are the questions for the characters still open? i remember readers sending in questions for the characters here!!! idk how to navigate that much here in tumblr so i cant tell but did you update last friday at 1:27? is that going to be a thing again? missed your active era omg i might as well be again too after your update 😭 i literally told my friend to stfu since i thought she was pranking me about a devoted update to get my attention lmfaooo

sorry about this long ass message but i just wanted u to feel that we’re still here 🩷 i used to be a silent reader but i realized how much it means to authors when readers leave a message whether its short or a long one :) hope this one cheered u up! thank you again, rj!

but thats so cool!! THE UNIVERSE REALLY SAID YALL LIKE PSYCHO JAEHYUN, HERE U GO ugh manifested me thinks
regarding OPEN FORUM, you can definitely send some in as always!!
for update schedules, i can't promise a proper timeline for it since i'm back to full time* but i can promise that i'll be writing more often now and will have it updated as soon as i proofread it!
will hide the rest of my answer since im gonna rant AHAHAH
as for my... well being, i guess -- i'm in a gray area at the moment. *i said i'm back to full time earlier because for the months of May and June, I asked to be a part timer since it's slow season for our company. but that also meant my paycheck would be cut in half. I'm not really happy with work right now since it's so draining (i work 10 hours/5 days) and i want to quit and look for work but im not in a position to do so (i have no savings bc of family medical issues). so im considering finding another source of income, but idk what to do really.
so ye thats whats been happening in mi life 😪 ill be fine eventually ^^

A paper on General Knowledge emphasizes the need for candidates to be well-versed in current events, especially those relevant to the legal field, and to possess a solid understanding of Rajasthan's cultural and socio-political environment.
Detailed Evaluation:
The examination process is designed to rigorously evaluate the candidate’s grasp of legal principles, analytical thinking, and practical application of laws, ensuring only the most competent individuals are selected for judicial roles.

Online RJS Notes: A Smart Study Companion for RJS Aspirants
Tumblr media
In today’s digital age, the way we study and prepare for competitive exams has evolved significantly. For Rajasthan Judicial Services (RJS) aspirants, the availability of Online RJS Notes has brought a revolutionary change in exam preparation strategies. These notes are no longer just an alternative; they have become a primary study resource for thousands of candidates aiming to crack the prestigious judicial services examination in Rajasthan.
What are Online RJS Notes?
Online RJS Notes are digitized study materials specifically curated for the RJS exam, which includes topics from law, general knowledge, current affairs, language papers, and more. These notes are usually prepared by experts, law faculties, or former toppers and are available in downloadable formats like PDF, or as part of video lectures, apps, and learning platforms.
Accessible on laptops, tablets, and smartphones, these notes offer a flexible, on-the-go learning solution for students who may not have access to traditional classroom coaching or want to supplement their studies with high-quality resources.
Advantages of Using Online RJS Notes
1. Time-Saving and Convenient
One of the biggest advantages of Online RJS Notes is convenience. Aspirants can access these notes anytime and from anywhere, eliminating the need to travel to coaching centers or sift through bulky law books. Whether you are working part-time, a final-year law student, or living in a remote town, online notes provide uninterrupted access to quality preparation material.
2. Comprehensive Coverage of Syllabus
Online RJS Notes are usually designed to present the complete RJS syllabus in a clear, concise, and well-organized manner. Topics like the Indian Penal Code, Civil Procedure Code, Criminal Procedure Code, Constitution of India, Indian Evidence Act, and more are broken down into digestible segments. This ensures aspirants can quickly grasp complex concepts and memorize key sections and case laws effectively.
3. Regular Updates and Current Affairs
Most platforms that provide Online RJS Notes also include regular updates on current affairs, recent judgments, and amendments in laws — which are crucial for both the preliminary and mains exams. Unlike printed books that can quickly become outdated, online notes can be updated instantly to reflect the latest information.
4. Visual and Interactive Learning
Many digital RJS note providers include diagrams, flowcharts, legal illustrations, and even interactive quizzes. This visual representation helps aspirants understand the topics better and retain them for longer. For example, complex procedures like framing of charges or the stages of a civil suit can be better understood through visual aids.
5. Affordable and Cost-Effective
Traditional coaching and law preparation books can be expensive. Online RJS Notes are often available at a fraction of the cost and sometimes even free. This democratizes access to quality resources and allows financially constrained students to compete on equal footing.
How to Choose the Best Online RJS Notes?
With a growing number of platforms offering RJS preparation content, it’s important to select notes that are trustworthy and exam-focused. Here’s what to look for:
Expertise and Authorship: Ensure the notes are prepared by experienced legal educators or past RJS toppers.
Syllabus Alignment: The notes should strictly follow the RJS syllabus prescribed by the Rajasthan High Court.
Language Preference: Choose notes available in both English and Hindi if you are more comfortable studying bilingually.
Practice Content: Look for notes that include model questions, previous year papers, and answer-writing tips for mains.
User Reviews: Always read user feedback and testimonials to gauge the usefulness of the notes.
Best Subjects to Cover Through Online Notes
Here’s a quick list of subjects that can be efficiently covered using Online RJS Notes:
Constitutional Law
Criminal Law (IPC, CrPC, Evidence Act)
Civil Law (CPC, Limitation Act, Specific Relief Act)
Rajasthan Local Laws
Essay and Language Paper (Hindi & English)
Current Affairs and GK (National and Rajasthan-specific)
Final Thoughts
The path to cracking the RJS exam is challenging, requiring dedication, strategy, and the right resources. Online RJS Notes offer a modern, efficient, and intelligent way to prepare for this competitive exam. They combine accessibility with quality, helping aspirants stay consistent and updated without the need for heavy books or costly coaching.
As the competition grows fiercer each year, adopting smart preparation methods becomes more important than ever. Leveraging Online RJS Notes not only helps you study better but also gives you the flexibility and confidence needed to succeed. Whether you're starting your RJS journey or revising in the final months, make sure to include high-quality Online RJS Notes in your study toolkit — they might just be the difference between success and setback.

OOC Rule and important background information time!
First of all, this is blog will usually fall under low-stakes or drama-stakes, HOWEVER there will adult language and adult humour as that’s just how I write and the kinda humour I find funny. That doesn’t mean disgustingly offensive humour in asks will be tolerated. I have standards y’know. There will be some posts that enter high-stakes mode. This will occur when an ask asks a question or makes comment/statement that prompts the post to shift in that direction. Asks/Comments/Statements that would cause posts to go into high-stakes mode include:
- Almost everything about RJ’s life and past before Paldea*
- Certain types of discussion surrounding Shadow Pokémon*
- Mentions of Shiny Mills and Unethical Pokémon Breeding
- Mentions of abusive treatment of humans and Pokémon (All kinds)*
- Mentions of Violet’s Paradox Pokémon
- Mentions of Pokémon Poachers*
- Mentions of Aura Guardian history
- Asks from Evil Pokémon teams
All high-stakes post will have an OOC warning that includes a statement that the post is going into high-stakes mode as a warning list before the post itself that is then is followed by a cut to let the reader know what they are getting themselves into before they read.
Any topic that has an asterisk next to it it means that are times were I cannot find a good way to let the topic down easily, so to speak, and thus will deem the, “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat,” warning to be necessary and will put it both in the warning list and in the tags. If you are unfamiliar with DD:DNT tag, it’s meaning, or it’s purpose, please watch this video by ColeyDoesThings on the topic: https://youtu.be/WVnT7KO1M8A
youtube
Now, on a much less depressing note, here’s a non-spoiler/important information list of the cannon this world is running under:
- Aura Guardians are a known thing here and have their own history as a group
- Shadow Pokémon are created by experimentation and from severe abuse
- The part of the Academy the Nemona and RJ is the college side of things
- All characters mentioned are 18+ unless stated elsewhere
- Several NPC characters, such as: gym leaders, elite four members, main story characters, and Champions have been replaced with an oc character, so if Nemona and RJ respond to your character question with a “Who,” that’s your answer. If I never mention the character by name, they are owned by someone isn’t in the Pokéblr community.
- I mentioned this before, but it bears repeating: RJ and Nemona are both 21+
- RJ can understand Pokémon speak.
- RJ’s family are the owners of Silph Co. and RJ is heir of the company. (Does RJ actually want to be the heir or not? Find that out for yourself.)
- Cannon characters, such as Nemona, will be given more character because as much I personally love these characters, Arceus a puddle is deeper than these bitches.
- There is a religion for Arceus (Feel free to suggest names for what it could be called)
- Pokémon Breeding works differently than normal (Deserves it’s own post. So, feel free ask RJ how it works.)
- Nemona with speak in green text. RJ will speak in purple text.
And, at least, for now, that’s all I can think of for all that you need, need to know, cannon wise. If I think of anything else, I’ll update the post.
And finally, here are the rules your ask and other interactions for :
- Do not ask anything obscene, de-humanising, racist, Homophobic/Transphobic, Anti-LGBTQ+, explicitly NSFW
- Keep asks towards me to a bare minimum
- Again, have mentioned already, but bares reiterating, do not, under any circumstances, tag any of my accounts on NSFW posts regarding any of my accounts, especially this one. Sin against Arceus on your own time and blog.
- Do NOT include any personal information in asks
- Harassment of me, or any other Pokéblr accounts I interact with, will NOT be tolerated
- Please speak as much English as possible, I rather not rely on Apple Translate more than I already have too.
- Pokéblr accounts that belong to Pokémon that want to make an ask must be in English so I know what your asking. I will, for lore reasons, make it that only RJ understands the ask.
- Rules will be updated as needed, but I would rather not further restrict creativity, so, don’t be the asshole that ruins it for everybody else.
That’s all for this post! Let’s all have fun together! See you soon!

ty for the tag eydis! <3 sorry for being late
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
how do you spend your free time?
it honestly depends on my mood. often, i would scroll through social media and watch reels when i'm feeling lazy, and i'd organise my playlists and read. if i'm feeling up to it, i record song covers/practice using bandlab (for harmonies etc) or i'd just whip out my guitar and start strumming chords.
what are your hobbies and how did you get into them?
i have a lot but my main ones are writing, reading, singing, drawing. for starters, i was like. a huge bookworm back in primary HAHAHAHA. i used to visit the library all the time, and i still recall borrowing 14 books from the library and i finished them all in one week. good times. writing started to grow on me when i was in year 6, because i was praised for it and got an academic achievement in english. i did put off writing fanfiction because i was embarrassed, but i still read it!! for drawing, it's simple. i drew a lot as a kid, i was the "art girl" in my family. still remember showing my art to my family friend and they said "it looks like anime" HAHAHAHA it doesn't but that was really encouraging for me. as for singing, there's one answer: i'm filipino. hshshsj okay so karaoke was a huge thing for me and my family and i'd always participate in singing it, and i always anticipated my points after i finish the song. i was and is the lead singer in my church worship group, and i was a former vocal ensemble member. so ya!!
what book or movie left a lasting impression on you?
can i say that "wonder" by rj palacio altered my brain chemistry in 5th grade. it's lowkey been a while since i've read the book (i was 9 when i read it) but it pretty much changed my perspective, and it was also an entertaining read. also via's perspective was so UHYGGH OUCH. also. the book thief. i started reading it earlier this year (still on the process of finishing i have a pdf downloaded) and i watched the movie. all i can say? hHSYGVSWGEWHAJNJKFDKO. yeah if i try to explain it i'd write an essay but let's not.
what kind of music do you enjoy?
my taste in music varies a lot actually HELP. like it's literally bipolar and i listen to diff genres depending on my mood. r&b/soul, pop, kpop, rock, soft rock, indie pop, electronic, literally hip-hop and rap. i would also say i listen to the mainstream stuff as well. anyways chappell roan <3333
who is your favorite character (atm or all time) and why?
inhales. venti, xiao, hu tao, furina (gi), robin, kafka, blade (hsr), luka, hyuna, mizi (alnst), namra, cheongsan, hari, mijin (aouad), hyunsu, eunyu, jisu (sweet home), jude, cardan (folk of the air). i can't remember who else it's been a while lmao.
open tags!!
tag + q&a game ₊˚ෆ
Tumblr media
hello! i thought it would be cute and exciting to do a tag game with all my mutuals to not only talk about themselves, but have fun! so here is my short little game:
alongside this picrew, share 5 things about yourself!
• how do you spend your free time? • what are your hobbies and how did you get into them? • what book or movie left a lasting impression on you? • what kind of music do you enjoy? • who is your favorite character (atm or all time) and why?
Tumblr media
i will start first!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
my name is rurumi and i enjoy spending my free time writing!
some of my hobbies (outside of writing) includes: drawing, building gundams and keyboards, and fashion! i got into most of them on a whim and became instantly hooked. aside from self-expression, being into fashion also helps with making friends in college because you always have something to talk about!
a book that left a lasting impression on me would have to be either kafka on the shore by haruki murakami or before the coffee gets cold by toshikazu kawaguchi. both stories have kept me up at night thinking a lot about the 'what ifs' in life.
i enjoy soul/r&b alongside anything of jrock influence, but i will basically listen to anything that sounds good. i am currently listening to 'so what' by lucy!
my favorite character at the moment is rin itoshi from blue lock because hes so ridiculously edgy, but at the same time i sympathize with him a lot. on the other hand, my favorite character of all time is suletta mecury from the witch from mercury series, she's an absolute ball of sunshine that i aspire to be.

omg bff why do you not like brandon sanderson's books? (im asking both bc im curious and also in hopes that you will rant your heart out)
I let my thoughts cool for a while before answering this sjdhwifhskf because his books just make me so mad. I've tried to organise my thoughts but I haven't really succeeded so it's mostly a compilation of all my annoyances with him. This is partly a me-problem in the sense that writers who’re only good at plot (which is mostly the case with him) just do not work for me at all. In my list of priorities good plot is ranked a lot lower than interesting thematic explorations and good prose (but he also sucks at characterisations - most of his characters are carbon copies of one another with slight differences, which means I don’t really end up liking any of them).
I’m going to put the rest of the rant under the cut because this turned out longer than I expected although I was typing this on my phone during class today-
His writing style is just really brash and lacking elegance or nuance - plus he has the most boring prose I've ever come across, maybe? I very much think he needs to step back and stop publishing so many books with such large wordcounts when most of his exposition turns out to be pretty useless. I just HAVE to drop a couple of quotes because some of them are such an eyesore, full of nonsense fragments and repetitions.
He stared northward.
At the black and silver clouds.
He’d never seen their like before. They blanketed the entire horizon to the north, high in the sky. They weren’t gray. They were black and silver. Dark, rumbling thunderheads, as dark as a root cellar at midnight. With striking silver light breaking between them, flashes of lightning that gave off no sound.
LIKE.
War had come to Andor in the still of night. The approaching refugees would soon discover that they’d been marching toward danger. It was not surprising. Danger was in all directions. The only way to avoid walking toward it would be to stand still.
Me when I’m trying to desperately say something #deep (he does manage to write thoughtful stuff. But he also fails a lot of the time and he needs a better editor.)
Outside the palace, the Asha’man line was finally weakening. They’d given him the better part of an hour, blasting back wave after wave of Trollocs in an awesome display of Power.
When I talk about him prioritising Drama and Plot over thematic importance, this is what I mean, essentially? One of the main themes RJ’s books deal with is that war is a tragedy, but instead of trying to maintain the spirit of that, he delves into how Cool the asha’man look killing the enemy’s armies and dedicates a whole book - a memory of light - to endless war sequences that I don’t quite understand the need for... at all.
I've only read mistborn, his WoT instalments and parts of the way of kings so I can only speak for them, but mistborn was generic-YA-bad and the way of kings reads like a person who doesn't know how to write trying to desperately write fantasy so I had to drop it early on (I'm still trying to read it, but college has been keeping me very busy, unfortunately so I'm trying to prioritise Good Writers instead because I can tell that reading his WoT instalments has rotted my brain and ruined my prose. ugh). I've also seen people describing the experience of reading his books as interacting with a textual translation of video games (in a not-good way) and I agree, honestly!
What I hate MOST is that he specifically instructs readers how to feel about characters doing certain things instead of trying to steer them towards those conclusions. He lets you know that you’re supposed to hate x character and sympathise with y character instead of letting you decide yourself based on their prior motivations/actions in the story. I hate it when an author tries to spoon-feed everything to me and tries to force me to feel about certain stuff in a way that they specifically want me to - such writing also means they’re probably a bad writer if they feel the need to clarify to the T why I’m supposed to feel a certain way.
Again, mistborn is one of his earlier books and I don't know if he's improved since, but there's also a bunch of fridging in his books, a sense of female caregivers being put on a pedestal, and female characters undergoing a character arc to embrace their femininity (while they previously rejected it) which means I have a harder time trying to believe he actually enjoys writing female characters. The 'how dare the oppressed subclass hate it's oppressors' thing he keeps pulling repeatedly in his books will never stop infuriating me either.
Also he is not funny and I wish he'd stop trying to be funny because I feel like throwing my book against a wall whenever I read what is supposed to be a ‘humorous’ passage. Shallan Davar bless you, the fandom loves you but I may never just because you get the brunt of his ‘funny’ dialogue:
“Well,” Shallan said to the captain, blushing but still eager to speak, “I was just thinking this: You say that my beauty coaxed the winds to deliver us to Kharbranth with haste. But wouldn’t that imply that on other trips, my lack of beauty was to blame for us arriving late?”
“Well…er…”
“So in reality,” Shallan said, “you’re telling me I’m beautiful precisely one-sixth of the time.”
“Nonsense! Young miss, you’re like a morning sunrise, you are!”
“Like a sunrise? By that you mean entirely too crimson”—she pulled at her long red hair—“and prone to making men grouchy when they see me?”
He laughed, and several of the sailors nearby joined in. “All right then,” Captain Tozbek said, “you’re like a flower.”
She grimaced. “I’m allergic to flowers.”
I’m sighing for a thousand years.

If you're interested:
Yim (Author of Hell and High Water) answered some questions about the book on Reddit~
I compiled some (after the cut), but here is the link if you want to see the full AMA: x
May we know the ages of the characters? (+ Todd and Pramila)?)
For the current crew of main characters, these are the ages:
MC - 27
Chand - 25
Sunny - 34
Phoebe - 22
RJ - 22
Todd and Pramila are both 27
2. May we also know a fun fact about each main characters?
MC - Her scar is not from a tragic backstory incident 😅
Chand - Has a bottomless stomach
Sunny - Grew up at a lighthouse
Phoebe - Has a tattoo on her wrist
RJ - Is not a cat person
3. What inspired you to write HHW?
I thought it would be nice to write a story with mostly altruistic characters that is hopeful. And then, of course, why not add boats? It was definitely in part inspired by the story of Dunkirk, with regular people making a difference in a difficult situation.
4. What's RJ, Sunny & Chand's favorite music genre? 👀
RJ - retro alt (this would be something like a mix of jazz and classical)
Sunny - blast metal
Chand - skapop
5. Were the names Sunny and Chand (sun and moon) kept on purpose?
Yes, they were on purpose. In general, there are a lot of natural and hopeful names in the story. The idea being that around the time these characters were born, it was a popular theme for baby names. And with the moon having such a huge affect on the tides, it would be considered auspicious.
6. Will Chand ever speak in Hindi? I ask, as a fellow Indian, who's really happy to see a desi character in your book!
Chand will probably not speak Hindi. While it's used a bit around his house, he isn't fluent and hasn't really made an effort to learn the language, though he certainly knows a number of words.
7. We know that except Homeport, remaining towns are real. So, when did this Homeport came into existence (year) if not a spoiler?
Homeport was founded in 2088
8. Has Chand always had a crush on Lori and that’s why his relationships never lasted, or is this something he suddenly realizes? If it’s always been this way, I’m wondering how that would go when not on his route. If it’s something he would admit to her.
Chand has had a bit of a crush on Lori since they were young, but I wouldn’t say that’s why his relationships never lasted. Their dynamic is interesting because they grew up together until they were teenagers, then Lori moved away for about a decade. So, right about the time Chand was getting interested in romantic relationships, Lori left. I wouldn’t say he forgot about her, but he kind of wrote off the possibility of a relationship. The next episodes deal with the latter half of your question, so I don’t want to get into the details too much, but I’ll say that how close of a relationship the player develops with Chand determines whether or not he’ll admit to any feelings.
9. How many end game LI’s are there? (Hopefully not a spoiler) and of course, will Todd be a LI?
The number of end game LI’s has not been fully decided. However, there are currently 5 planned love interests that I would consider “end-game” so far as having lots of screen time and direct interactions with Lori throughout the story regardless of length. Part of this depends on the ultimate length of the story. I’ve structured it so that it will be able to reach a satisfying conclusion in either 2 or 3 seasons, depending on what ultimately ends up making sense. Todd is a romanceable character, but if you’re looking for lots of screen-time and intimate scenes with your LI, I can’t recommend him.
10. Can we see Lori traveling to other parts of world later in the story?
At this time, her adventures will be contained to the northwest Pacific Ocean/coast, but there's a lot of interesting stuff up there.
11. Will we see Spot again, the loveliest of all orcas, and will there be more animals and pets in the story?
Yes, we will definitely see Spot again :D And I promise there will be more animals. There may be more pets.
12. Assuming that Todd is really interested in Lori and it's not just a rumor, what exactly does he like about her the most?
Todd’s honestly a bit too embarrassed to say what he likes about her the most, but he does like that she’s down to earth and doesn’t take what he does for granted. He also think she has a really sweet smile when she’s half-awake in the morning.
13. Can you tell me a Chand secret that he only told Lori about?
His mother’s favorite wooden spoon didn’t get lost. He broke it when he was 6 trying to pry open an old crate they found while the tide was out, and he and Lori buried it in the woods so no one would find out.
14. Speaking of pets, what treats would Baku and Nixie (and the Orca?) prefer?
Baku loves fish of pretty much any variety. Nixie is a carb-fiend. Spot would love to eat some seals, which makes me very conflicted.
15. Will we in the future hear more about the Arctic Wars or the Wall? I am very intrigued by the lore of those!
I think that yes, there will be some mention and discussion of these. I try to work in all the world building organically. We'll definitely learn some more about the Arctic Wars, just because they've had such an impact on the world. The Wall and walled cities in general probably won't come up all that much.
16. If Lori were to meet any of the other MCs, which whom would she get along the best?
I'm guilty of not having played every story... but I think she would get along really well with Theodora, who seems pretty outgoing and down to earth. I mean, Adelaide and her would probably have a good time too.
17. Is there any possibility of crossovers/references to other books in the future?
Yes, there certainly is, but I think these will mostly just be little easter eggs.
18. Can we have the ages, heights, and zodiac sign of the main cast?
Lori: (In my head she's 5'5" but she turned out much taller because RC MC's are tall)
Sun: Gemini
Ascendant: Cancer
Moon: Libra
Chand: 6'2"
Sun: Aquarius
Ascendant: Leo
Moon: Pisces
Phoebe: 5'4" ( trivia - she was originally 5'10" but a miscommunication ended up with her being much shorter)
Sunny: 5'2"
RJ: 5'9"
19. So Chand have night vision. Will we meet other characters with some kind of "super power".
Yes, but they may not be as obvious or visually interesting as Chand's. Most genetic splicing/modification was done in the period leading up to the collapse by more affluent groups, and most of these groups wound up either inside of the walls in the metros or even on off-planet colonies.
20. Will we learn more about past event that lead to the current world situation.
Yes, but I don't intend to ever just try and explain everything that happened because there are so many different factors that lead up to the state of the world.
21. Can you tell us 1 thing that all the 17 exes of Chand had in common lol?
They all didn't actually know what they wanted out of a relationship when they started dating him? XD
22. Is the story episodic with many small adventures or is there a long term plot that will connect those adventures? I’m so curious about what awaits us in the future!
There is a long term plot, but it's mostly character-driven.
23. About RJ!! I can even imagine that things I ask about his life and family will be spoilers, so I’m gonna ask some trivia:
- What are his favorite things/stories that he has heard about "the world in the past”?
- What's his favorite place to go?
- What is something that is very challenging to him?
- Is there a CG coming soon or not so soon yet?
Favorite things he's heard about from the past - he finds the idea of everyone carrying tiny functional GPS units around in their pockets highly entertaining; Favorite place - a calm ocean; Challenging thing - Admitting when he messed up at his job; There is a CG with RJ planned for the next episode.
24. Will MC reconcile with her parents in future? (I hope this is not a spoiler).
Reconciling with the MC's parents will be up to the player.
25. Will the shipwrecked sailor in episode 5 be a LI since Lori has already gotten into bed with him? 😂
Yes XD
26. Has Lori had any serious relationships in the past?
Lori has not had a serious relationship before.
27.  I am quite confused with Chand's eye condition?? Does he have super vision at night?
Chand has extremely good night vision because his eyes have a reflective layer in them. So, he's super sensitive to light, which is why, in most cases, he wears goggle-like sunglasses. (Light reflection is even worse when you're on the water).
28. Will we able to do make over of boat in future?
You will not be able to change the way Gitana looks. That said, there may be some boat remodeling happening.
29. Will the nightmare of MC we lately saw in latest update, can it become true?? Like chances of our li's or character's dying??
There will definitely be chances of other characters dying in this story. David and Captain Chellberg can both die already, but they won't be the only ones.
30. Lastly, in your personal opinion, is it better to accumulate more points in a certain stat category or to balance all stats points evenly?
Balancing vs. maxing - This one is tough, I don't think there's a best way to play. If you want to be the salty sea dog, then prag is good to focus on, but prag Lori can be a real hardass 😅. I'd encourage going for what seems most fun.
31. Can we balance our points?
You can!
32. Is there any character in your story with mental health issues?
Yes. There are a few that come to mind. Some will be touched on in the story, others will likely not.
33. Any chance Pramila is an LI? Mayhaps not a full branch? We're in love with her character design.
She is not a romanceable character, unfortunately. I agree, the artists did a great job with her.
34. How many chapters can we expect in the upcoming update?
2 chapters for next update, they'll be fun ones!
35. How long does it take you to write a chapter?
This depends, but generally I have 3 weeks to finish each chapter. At this time, I have several other responsibilities that keep me occupied, but I'm hoping that eventually I'll be able to just focus on writing almost full time.

Everyone, please welcome Charlene Allen to Rich in Color! We're excited to have her here to talk about her novel, PLAY THE GAME, which came out earlier this year:
Play the Game by Charlene Allen Katherine Tegan Books
In the game of life, sometimes other people hold all the controls. Or so it seems to VZ. Four months have passed since his best friend Ed was killed by a white man in a Brooklyn parking lot.
When Singer, the man who killed Ed, is found dead in the same spot where Ed was murdered, all signs point to Jack, VZ’s other best friend, as the prime suspect.
VZ’s determined to complete the video game Ed never finished and figure out who actually killed Singer. With help from Diamond, the girl he’s crushing on at work, VZ falls into Ed’s quirky gameiverse. As the police close in on Jack, the game starts to uncover details that could lead to the truth about the murder.
Can VZ honor Ed and help Jack before it’s too late?
And now, on to the interview:
Thank you for joining us, Charlene! Please take a moment to introduce yourself.
Hey! I’m Charlene Allen. In addition to being a writer, I’m a mom to an awesome son and a quirky dog, I’m a life-partner, and I’m an activist working to end mass incarceration. Play the Game is my debut novel.
In PLAY THE GAME, VZ and his friendships with Ed and Jack are at the heart of what drives the plot. Can you tell us a little more about the three of them?
VZ, Ed and Jack are the kind of friends that grow up together because their parents are close, so they are always at each other’s houses. They’re more like cousins than friends. They know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, most embarrassing haircuts. Everything! And they’re all very different from each other. Jack’s all about the swagger, VZ ‘s into keeping it mellow, and Ed’s a proud gamer geek.
What other characters play important roles in PLAY THE GAME? What can you tell us about them?
The two other main characters in Play the Game are Chela and Diamond. Chela is VZ’s best school buddy, so a friend that exists entirely outside the triangle he, Ed and Jack form. Chela helps VZ with the mystery he has to solve to keep Jack out of trouble. But she doesn’t coddle him. When he gets in his feelings about Ed and Jack, she calls him on it and helps him see things more objectively. Diamond is VZ’s love interest. She’s taken, in a relationship with a guy they both work with, but there’s real romantic tension between her and VZ and neither one of them is able to ignore it.
How have your experiences as a lawyer and advocate influenced your writing for PLAY THE GAME?
My experience as a lawyer helped me see up close and personally how ineffective and inequitable our criminal legal system can be. That led me to do work to try to transform the system and find alternative approaches to conflict and harm; approaches that exist outside the system. All of that features in Play the Game, as VZ begins to understand how the system works, and takes on the question of what he and his friends can do to find a better way.
Restorative justice is an important part of PLAY THE GAME. What are some common misconceptions people have about restorative justice?
Great question and one that’s tough to answer quickly. I think “RJ” is becoming a buzz term and with that comes a lot of misconceptions. Often, people think of a restorative approach as anything that involves talking or is non-punitive. So, a school might have a restorative approach that involves all the parties in a situation having a conversation, but then if everything isn’t quickly resolved they resort to suspension or other forms of punishment. In that example, “RJ” is being used as a step inside of a larger existing system which, to me, defeats the purpose. To adopt a restorative approach is to involve community and engage with methods of accountability that don’t exist in most systems. It’s a culture shift, so it requires time and dedication to implement.
What's something you're particularly proud of in PLAY THE GAME?
I love that I was able to weave a lot of different elements together; the actual game that readers get to play in the book, the friendship story and mystery, the love story, and the RJ. It was my goal to write a book in which tough things happen, but the book is still a fun read because it captures the spirit of young people who lean into their friendships, abandon themselves to the throes of first love, and live their way into healing and self-discovery.
Now that PLAY THE GAME is in readers' hands, what is up next for you?
I’m finishing my next YA novel which should come out in the fall of ‘24. I’m excited because it’s completely different from Play the Game, but I think equally adventurous. It’s about a girl who’s digging up family secrets and figuring out where she belongs in the world.
And to close us out, what young adult books by BIPOC authors are you looking forward to reading this year?
I’ve just started The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes, which is a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to finishing. I’m also looking forward to Ain’t Burned All the Bright by Jason Reynolds and Jayson Griffin. And, though I’m not sure if it’s technically YA, I’m excited to read Notes from a Young Black Chef by Kwame Onwuachi.
Charlene Allen works with community organizations to heal trauma and fight injustice, especially the beast called mass incarceration. She received her MFA from The New School, her JD from Northeastern University, and her BA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She lives in Brooklyn with her fabulous family and their very silly dog. Play the Game is her debut novel. You can visit her at www.charleneallen.com.
