So I've recently been reading the Murderbot Diaries and Time to Orbit: Unknown (both fantastic btw!) and despite the plot being incredibly different I've noticed some very fun similarities too:
a side character who uses neopronouns as part of a culturally recognised third gender
MC is also not male or female, but don't use third gender label either
MC is aromantic
The future has significantly more slavery than is ideal
capitalism is the cause of so many problems, both societally and for the MC personally
MC just wants to vibe, but their reputation makes them seem inclined to cause problems. (murder for one, sabotage for the other)
The AI running the ship that the MC spends the most time on is both smarter than expected and kind of an asshole
MC is more comfortable around dead bodies than most
MC discovers a dead body and has to help solve a murder (it's not the only one they see; there are overall way more dead ppl than they want)

the thing with milgram is that i don't actually know how good the writing is. i haven't seen any payoff yet, and i don't even know what that payoff will look like, so i can't know how much you can analyze and at what point you start digging into things that were never intended. and for most of the prisoners, that's fine, there's no harm in waiting.
but i'm now being asked to trust that something that looks like harmful DID misrepresentation will actually turn out to be clever and subversive. and i can't really bring myself to do that when i have no evidence that the writers know what they're talking about and aren't just misrepresenting DID. right now, after years of hinting at an explanation, it is presenting us with a character who was stressed at work and so developed an alter who kills people that annoy him.
sure, i could give it the benefit of the doubt. maybe mikoto's alter is lying about his motive. maybe the writers do know that DID develops as a result of childhood trauma in the vast majority of cases and plan to reveal more in the third trial. sure. but the simplest explanation is that the writers are just misrepresenting DID and playing into the "evil/murderous alter" trope, and i have no reason to have faith that that's not the case. especially since, even if there is more going on, they're still willing to leave it like this for at least another year before subverting it, and that's extremely irresponsible imo.
yeah. so. musically, double was great. but everything else just leaves me feeling really, really bad.

Suddenly, another noise was heard. A strange noise, that came from above. Saturninus looked at the dark ceiling of the Curia [Senate house]. More noises. Like footsteps. It was as if they were walking on the roof.
I've just started Roma soy yo: La verdadera historia de Julio César by Santiago Posteguillo! Thank you to @publiusscipiospqr for suggesting it!
The story seems to take place in two time periods, alternating between Julius Caesar's early adulthood, and flashbacks to the time of Marius and Sulla. I've just gotten to the point where Bad Things happen to Saturninus, and I really like Posteguillo's characterization of him, Sulla, Aurelia and Dolabella Senior so far. I also enjoy how the past and future sequences play off each other and heighten the story's tension.
It'll be interesting to see where the characterizations go from here. Posteguillo has clearly chosen to simplify Roman politics a bit, and to firmly distinguish the "good guys" and "bad guys." (He has the most sympathetic Marius and meanest Metellus Pius I've ever seen.) But I can understand why he'd make that choice as a storyteller, and for what it is, it's still entertaining. Good suspense and dramatic tension, as you can see above. I also suspect the story will get more morally gray as events proceed.

Murder Mystery with heavy romance should come with a warning.
I came here for death. Not 5 chapters worth of rigorous smooching.

"I'll say it however many times you want. I'll romance you until you get sick of me. I am horrendously, horrendously in love with your dreadful face, and we need to go, now."
Benedikt's love declaration to Marshall might just be one of the best, if not the best, declarations of love I have ever read....

Thor: Ragnarok could instead have been a sit-com about the Asgardian monarchy where Thor is due to inherit the throne and Loki has to murder him to get the job instead and Hela has to murder both of her brothers (because sexism, boo) and everyone's running about pretending to be Wholesome Siblings but fratricide of some sort is very much on the agenda and Thor's lightning powers are all that's keeping him alive at this point (because his siblings are ambitious and talented and own many sharp objects!) and I don't know how all that Jeff Goldblum stuff fits in, maybe it just doesn't, but anyway some sort of comedy hijinx ensue and it's a lovely heartwarming film/series about how your real family are the people you choose as allies while you murder your way to the throne and who you're gonna have to get rid of ASAP once you finally manage that because they know where you were on the night your older brother(s) were mysteriously stabbed by unknown assailants and how your dad really died.

finished watching the first scream movie and (for very obvious reasons) i’m being reminded of the ‘ghostface duo’ edits that i’ve seen for fandoms and some specifically for warrior nun
and while i wouldn’t actually be able to read a fic with it (good guys being bad guys makes me too sad 😞) i’m brainrotting so hard and rotating the concept of a ghostface wn au around in my head at the speed of light
