Rewatching Lodoss War, and Ghim is still one of my favourite Dwarves of all time.

Fun fact: Record of Lodoss War is an anime known for two things:

- being a direct adaptation of the author's D&D campaign

- the soundtrack ripping off Leviathan, an somewhat unremarkable sci-fi horror movie, itself ripping off The Thing and Alien

Yep! To be specific, the anime is an adaptation of a replay (basically a dramatized written account of an RPG) of a B/X D&D (best edition) campaign. The Internet Archive has an unofficial English translation of the replay as it first appeared in the Japanese Comptiq Magazine over here:

It doesn't cover all of the first "season" of the anime, but a lot of it. I 100% recommend reading the replay and watching the anime, you can see a lot of cool things that make sense because of the ruleset being used:

Ghim and Deedlit just are like that because their classes are Dwarf and Elf respectively.

The group successfully utilizes Protection from Evil against gargoyles. Protection from Evil prevents any "enchanted" creatures (defined as creatures that can only be harmed with magic weapons) from so much as attacking characters under its effect in some older editions.

Anyway, the Lodoss people tried to make a deal with TSR for making an official D&D setting out of Lodoss (which to my knowledge is named that simply because the DM was like oh what's a cool and exotic name, I know, how about the island of Rhodes' Japanese name!) but was hit with a cease and desist, so they made their own RPG, Sword World, which is more relevant in Japanese TTRPG culture these days than D&D.

Um anyway sorry for infodumping. I didn't know about the soundtrack thing. I'll have to give it a listen.

Record of Lodoss War:  Deedlit in the Wonder Labyrinth

For those who don’t know, Record of Lodoss War is a classic fantasy anime

Before Isekai.

Before harems.

Before subvert this, and deconstruct that.

A group of heroes defeated a great evil.  To this day, Ghim is one of my favourite Dwarves i’ve seen in any medium, and the characters resonate in my soul.  Deedlit is the Elf, and still one of the best Elf characters ever created, (only being surpassed by Ariane from Skeleton Knight).

And when I say the Elf, I mean, the Elf.  This is before Elves had classes, when they leveled up as Elves, and Dwarves leveled up as Dwarves.

The original band had:

Parn:  Warrior / Hero

Deedlit:  Elf

Etoh:  Priest

Slayn:  Wizard

Ghim:  Dwarf

Woodchuck:  Thief

This seems pretty generic, and the setting honestly is.  It never really tried to do anything of it’s own in the story, and being a little underwhelming is the only criticism you could possibly have of it, (if you don’t want to be torn to pieces of oldschool anime fans).

The catch, though, is that every - single - one since has been desperate to subvert / deconstruct / put their own mark on it, that being traditionally generic makes it incredibly unique, nowadays.  I mean, it doesn’t have a harem.  It doesn’t try to deconstruct the nature of good and evil, (instead it makes Evil compelling, (and, let’s be honest, sexy).  It isn’t an Isekai.

Now, onto the game.  Saw it, had to try it.  As I said, the somewhat generic elements of the setting are unique compared to other games, and so come off as fresh and interesting.b  I mean, when’s the last time you just encountered a Lizardman named Lizardman?

Like the original, my only complain is that it’s slightly underwhelming.  It’s definitely not as good as the best modern platformers, instead fostered with incredibly old-school elemental rock-paper-scissors that you have to cycle through.  It also doesn’t have a map.

That said, it is quite fun, and unlike every modern game that tries to subvert the genre, it just lets you have fun with it.  Is it perfect?  No?  Is it fun?  Yes.

As for the story, Deedlit wakes up in a labyrinth.  After looking around, trying to figure out why she’s here, she sees Parn, and tries to follow him.  She’s in love with him, and if I had to guess, I’d say the game is in her own mind, trying to reconcile her feelings for him, and the taboo nature, or Mayfly-December nature, of the romance.  That’s just a guess based off what I’ve seen before.
