With the Reddit API change about to take effect, I want to mention a few things that I've seen that are likely to change or go away.

First of all, there's multiple bot accounts used for moderation, user tools, or plain fun. Everyone here loves haiku-bot. Reddit has u/haikusbot which does the same thing. The API change means it won't work anymore. There's also u/RemindMeBot which you can ping to set reminders. One useful bot due to repost karma-farmers always being an issue is u/RepostSleuthBot which can scan Reddit to see if a post has previously been uploaded. There's also u/SaveVideo which can create downloaded video files of posts. So the API changes mean losing a lot of user tools.

Then there's site specific bots like u/Roboragi which posts links to anime/manga sites for people. r/lotrmemes is filled with tons of bots of various lotr characters (and Robert Baratheon) and the bots will have full conversations in the comments. So the API changes means an end to a piece of some subreddits' culture.

And finally there's u/automoderator. This is a major tool used by mods to manage the subs. u/automoderator is used across multiple subreddits and has various functions per sub. One simple task is to check if a poster has a certain minimum karma, thus preventing spammers from casually brigading a subreddit. It can also auto ban users who post to certain subreddits which keeps out certain political views (or maybe two subreddits are just having silly wars with each other). Also, it can auto-comment important messages to posts.

So this change is going to destroy a lot of the internal charm of the site and it will also open the flood gates to bots, scammers, and all sorts of horrible things that mods can only barely hold back, especially on the huge subs, political subs, and any minority support subs.

I think the reason that tumblr notes are so much more gratifying than reddit notifications is because you can actually see who liked/reblogged your post. On reddit you usually only see someone's username if they're complaining, correcting you on something, or adding their own, possibly irrelevant, joke. You can get 10k upvotes on a post, but that's no more than just a number.

Whent to the path of exile subreddit today to ask a question about the game, and the first thread I saw is just people shitting on mods and demanding they quit because apparently the sub going private for a couple days ruined people's lives. I know that gamers have a certain reputation, and that r/pathofexile is an absolute cesspool of stupid and reactionary people, but I still didn't expect to see like a hundred comments saying "yeah, I don't care about the protest, API changes don't affect me, fuck the mods, Spez has the right to do whatever he wants, protests don't work anyway". I'm usually leaning towards anarcho communism, but hearing gamers talk about anything even slightly related to politics makes me go full red fash, because some people deserve to be sent to gulag.

You know what’s really fucked up about Reddit? The way people use something called “Reddit Cares” as a weapon to harass people regarding suicide.

If you don’t know, Reddit Cares is a way users can report other users who are at risk/threatening suicide. Problem is, it’s AUTOMATED. Zero moderation. So people who disagree with you will report you, causing you to get an unpleasant message about who you can call so you won’t kill yourself.

I like Tumblr because not only does it lack something that stupid, the users here aren’t the kind of assholes to do something like that.

The fact that Tumblr can shit the bed so bad so many times and still come out on top of all other social media sites atm is astounding

the same exact fucking day,

my RIF app gets disabled at 8pm. So, fuck Reddit. Then Instagram informed me that my art was too spicy and my account was restricted. So, fuck Instagram.

Having a Tumblr account before the Reddit API drama is like owning two houses and staying at your second house for a bit only to discover that your first house has been destroyed in a gas explosion orchestrated by the building company itself

traffic is nearly at pre blackout levels though. i like to think that a lot of that is people archiving content, but the short attention span of the internet is probably more likely. keep spreading awareness and sowing discord for reddit management. they can’t sweep us under the rug if we’re too obnoxious.
