Abkhazians & Ossetians in Georgia. A Short History

In light of the disinformation campaign carried out by Russian information networks and picked up by western media, the Institute of the Georgian History at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University has released an explanation as to why the Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions (incorrectly called "South Ossetia") have always been an integral part of Georgia.

In the remote past, to the south of the Great Caucasian Range and east of the Black Sea, rural clans fought each other for land and mines, making alliances and early states. Two cultures equipped first with bronze and then with iron were established in the valleys of the rivers Rioni (Phasis), Chorokhi (Aphsaros), and Mtkvari (Cyros/Kura). Roughly, the borders of Colchis included the city of Pitius (Bichvinta, Pitsunda) in the North West, Sarapanis (Shorapani) in the East, near the Likhi mountains, which divides Georgia into West and East, and the mouth of the river Chorokhi in the South, near Batumi, Georgia’s main port. Another name for Colchis is Egrisi, derived from the tribal name Margali/Megreli/Mingrelian. The Mingrelian language, very close to the Georgian, is still spoken in West Georgia as a family one, like that of West Georgian highlanders, the Svani. The next country had two rivers, Chorokhi, now mostly in Turkey, and Mtkvari within its borders. Local folk called it Kartli, and the Greeks – Iberia and Iberians. The latter term contributes to Ivirk, Vrastan – Armenian terms; also to Varkan, Gurgan, Gurgistan – Persian terms, which in turn contributes to Georgia and Gruziya.

Thus, Kartli, while comprising the Mtkvari and Chorokhi valleys, was labeled as Iberia, or Vrastan, or Varkan, or Gurgan by foreigners. Gradually, Colchis/Egrisi and Kartli/Iberia became more and more integrated, and Georgian, the language spoken in Kartli, spread to the eastern Black Sea coast, putting the Mingrelian and Svani languages in the position of a family language. From that point on, this new country was called Sakartvelo, a term derived from Kartli, and also Iberia, Gurgistan, Gruziya and Georgia (T. Dundua. History of Georgia. Tbilisi. 2017, pp. 5-22. v. Still, there was another language in West Georgia which was also converted into a family language: Abkhazian. The Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia (Georgia) has Sokhumi as its capital. Sokhumi is the Turkish version of the Georgian name Tskhumi, while the Greeks and Italians called the city Dioscurias and Sebastopolis. People living in its neigborhood in the Classical and Hellenistic periods were the Colas and the Coraxae, obviously Colchian clans. Their names are substituted by that of the Colchians themselves. The first mention of the Aphsils, obvious ancestors of the Abkhazians, near Sebastopolis/Tskhumi, dates back to the 70s of the 1st c. A.D. Soon, their relatives, the Abasks, appear. These two names sometimes disappear in favor of “Lazi,” the name of Mingrelian-speaking people descended from the southern mountains to mingle with the Colchians, thus changing the name of the country into Lazica. In the northern part of Lazica under the local feudal lords, they again call themselves Aphsils and Abasks, when unified with the rest of the country – Lazi. That means that from the 2nd c. A.D., the Mingrelian language was a social one throughout Lazica, while the Abkhazian language was put in the position of a family language spoken near Sebastopolis/Tskhumi. Indeed, the special Mingrelian term for that part of Lazica was “apkha,” i.e. periphery. The periphery of what? That of Mingrelian, i.e. western Georgian, culture. Gradually, Aphsils and Abasks under the local princes also started to call themselves Abkhazians. When in the 8th c., apparently through marriage, their prince found himself residing in the central city of Kutaisi, Lazica/Egrisi received one more name – Apkhazeti. With the Georgian language becoming dominant on the eastern Black Sea coast, the Mingrelian, Svani and Abkhazian languages found themselves in the position of a family language (T. Dundua. West and East unified was called Sakartvelo/Georgia. And the title of the kings from the Bagrationi ruling dynasty was as follows: “King of the Abkhazians (i.e. Western Georgia), Kartvelians (Eastern and Southern Georgia), Ranians and Kakhetians (extreme East of the Eastern Georgia)” (T. The decline of Georgia towards the end of the 16th c. enabled the Ottomans to increase their territory, seeing them taking control of the cities on the eastern Black Sea coast. Georgian frontier defenses were down. Finding so little opposition, many tribes settled in the districts they had penetrated, a new wave of the Abkhazian speaking clans among them. They made their way from the mountains first to the region of nowadays Sochi (Russian Federation), and then down the coast towards Bichvinta (Pitius, Pitsunda). Those rough highlanders forced part of the local agricultural folk to flee to the central regions. Thus, rural and urban sites suffered much and the links with the rest of the country were badly damaged. The Russian Empire annexed eastern Georgia, the Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti, in 1801. This paved the way for Russian expansion into western Georgia. In 1810, Abkhazian prince Giorgi (Safar Beg) Shervashidze swore allegiance to the Russian Emperor and in 1864, Russian governance was established in the territory. Although the process of separating Abkhazia from Georgia was actively supported by the Russian authorities, still Abkhazia was a natural and integral part of Georgia. Perhaps it was for this reason that the Sukhumi military district was soon included in the Kutaisi governorate. Despite the negative effects of the Russian imperial policy, in 1918, the year when the Democratic Republic of Georgia was founded, Abkhazia was a part of Georgia (M. Lordkipanidze. On June 11, 1918, an agreement was signed between the people’s council of Abkhazia and the leadership of the Democratic Republic of Georgia, where Abkhazia as a part of Georgia gained autonomy.

After the end of Georgia’s short independence in 1921, Abkhazia remained within Soviet Socialist Republic of Georgia under a special union agreement, as a treaty republic having a certain type of autonomy within Georgia. In 1931, Abkhazia officially became the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (ASSR) of Georgia (Political Status of Abkhazia within the Soviet Georgia. 1921-1937. in Essays from the History of Abkhazia. This remained unchanged until the end of the Soviet Union. According to the 1989 Soviet census, the total population on the territory of the ASSR of Abkhazia was 525,061, of which 239,872 were ethnic Georgians (45.7% of the population), while 93,267 were Abkhazians (17.8%) (S. Abkhazia enjoyed cultural and scientific benefits as part of Georgia during the Soviet era. The Abkhazian language was taught at the schools, and university.

Since 1993, the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia has been occupied by the Russian Federation (for the full-length narrative about Abkhazians v. З. Папаскири. Абхазия: история без фальсификации. 2е изд. Тбилиси. 2010 (with Engl. summary).

The next region occupied by the Russian Federation was the Autonomous District of South Ossetia. The Ossetians started settling in Georgia beyond the Caucasian range in the 16th-17th cc. as fugitives.

After the annexation of eastern Georgia by Russia in 1801, the Ossetian villages were attached to the Gori district of the Tbilisi governorate.

In 1920, the Russian Bolsheviks supported Ossetians living in the Democratic Republic of Georgia, in the mountains north of Gori, to establish the Soviet power there and declare the territory a part of Soviet Russia. This was an abortive attempt.

In February 1921, Soviet Russia violated the agreement of May 7, 1920 by militarily attacking the Georgian state and eliminating its independence. In April 1922, the Bolsheviks granted so-called South Ossetia the status of autonomous district within Soviet Socialist Republic of Georgia. Soviet policy can be regarded as a premeditated attempt to disrupt the future attempts of the Georgians to gain independence and build a stable state as separatism within Georgia would constrain Tbilisi in its actions. The Autonomous District of South Ossetia consisted of a number of Ossetian settlements and a purely Georgian town Tskhinvali.

Thus, in 1922, the Autonomous District of South Ossetia was created in the heart of historic Georgian lands where the Georgian population represented the majority of the population.

It also needs to be emphasized that throughout the Soviet period (until 1991), the Ossetians living in Georgia were granted all necessary legal rights as an ethnic minority. December 16th, 1989 – Julio Giovanni de Santos is born to Amy Vitti and Manuel de Santos.

April 1991 – Amy and Manuel separate after she feels guilty/embarrassed over him having to save her during a suicide attempt.  

August 1991 – Vincent Calvetti meets Amy at a nightclub while offering her a bump of his coke. It’s love at first snort.

February 1993 – After almost two years of dating, Amy finally lets Vinny formally meet Giovanni. They hit it off almost instantly, and Gio calls him ‘dad’ right off the bat.

June 1993 – Amy enters the first depressive episode that Gio can remember.

December 1993 – For his fifth birthday, Gio receives a Gameboy from Vinny. His first video game console, and he still has it to this day.

September 1996 – After Manuel demands that he be allowed to see his son on a more regular basis, Amy and Vinny uproot with Gio and move to Boston, MA.

November 1996 – After a few good months, Amy enters her worst depressive episode in years.

December 1996 – Just a week after Gio’s 8th birthday and two days before Christmas, Amy attempts suicide and is caught/stopped by Vinny. She checks-in to a mental facility that same day for the sake of her family. Gio is in utter dismay.

February 1997 – Just in time for Valentines Day, Amy is discharged and is finally on medication for her Bipolar Disorder.

May 2000 – Gio enters his first competitive gaming tournament, which is really just a bunch of kids trying to get the most high scores on each machine in the local arcade. He puts up a good fight, but ultimately wins 2nd place, which fuels him to try and never lose ever again.

October 2003 – The first Call of Duty game comes out, and Gio is absolutely enthralled by it. He masters it almost immediately, holding weekly mini-tournaments with his friends and other kids in school.

April 2004 – Gio and Kyra officially meet for the first time.

January 2005 – His high school’s gaming club hosts a Call of Duty tourney, organized by Gio himself. He wins by a landslide, proudly taking home the measly $100 prize.

May 2005 – Gio asks Kyra to junior prom, while simultaneously asking her to be his girlfriend.

June 2007 – After graduating high school, Gio has no plans to continue his education, and focuses solely on his girlfriend, and his gaming.

August 2010 – Luka Giovanni De Santos is born on August 4th, 2010 at 5:45 AM after Kyra spends almost three days in labor.

June 2013 – Kyra begins having an affair with a coworker of hers on weekends that Gio and Luka spend together with his side of the family.

October 2013 – Accidentally, Gio walks in on Kyra and the other man having sex in their apartment. The two break up on the spot and he moves into his own place, only able to see Luka on the weekends and some weekdays depending on Kyra’s work schedule.

February 2014 – Putting Luka to bed on February 27th, 2014, this is the last time Kyra sees her son ever again. The boy is gone by the morning, and leaves no trace. There is a widespread search across the state for him.

March 2014 – Gio is arrested on the 1st and charged for the arranged kidnapping of his son, though he is soon acquitted of all charges due to lack of evidence.

July 2017 – After taking a hiatus from Esports, Fortnite is released, and Gio gains extreme popularity almost overnight the moment he starts streaming the game.

June 2018 – Gio wins the very first Fortnite World Cup.

March 2019 – Gio moves back to Sloane from Boston and opens up Loot Llama after 2 successful years of reentering gaming culture.

AU Thursday: Londerland Bloodlines -- Pre-Game Timeline!

So, I believe I've mentioned I'm replaying Bloodlines currently to determine what the timeline of the game is for my "Londerland Bloodlines" AU (now having been upgraded to an official story!). But when I started working on the opening chapter, I realized something -- I also needed to shore up the timeline for what happened before the events of the game! After all, even if I'm starting with Alice getting Embraced, knowing just how events in her and everyone else's lives happened is important -- if only because my characters are going to be telling each other their histories at some point. :p

So! Under the readmore is my current pre-game timeline for these versions of Alice, Victor, Victoria, Emily, Lizzie, and Bonejangles. I focused mainly on figuring out how Corpse Bride and American McGee's Alice/Alice: Madness Returns would go down, though I added some other notes explaining Alice's relationship to Wonderland in this world (since, obviously, she's not the Alice from the books!), and setting up how Emily, Lizzie, and Bonejangles ended up in the Giovanni Crypts. I may be tweaking things here and there as time and the story goes on, but this serves as a good first draft, anyway. Enjoy!

May 4th, 1984: Alice Pleasance Liddell is born to Arthur and Lorina Liddell – their second daughter after ten-year-old Lizzie (November 22nd, 1974).

June 9th, 1984: Victor Fitzwilliam Van Dort is born to William and Nell Van Dort, their only child. He grows up privileged but rather neglected, and becomes a rather shy young man.

November 5th, 1992: Angus Bumby, one of Arthur's psychology undergraduates at Oxford University who'd developed an obsession with Lizzie, breaks into the Liddell house, rapes and kills Lizzie, then sets the house on fire to cover his tracks. Arthur and Lorina die in the blaze, but a badly-burned Alice is able to escape through her bedroom window and is taken to hospital. She remains in the burn unit for a year, recovering – her body heals remarkably well, according to the doctors, but her mind doesn't. Unknown to anyone, a furious Lizzie's spirit refuses to go to the Underworld as a result of her horrific death, and remains at the site of the Liddell house, haunting it with vigor (namely throwing things at any male visitor).

November 11th, 1993: Alice is then taken to Rutledge Psychiatric Institute, as she's gone catatonic from survivor's guilt and won't respond to any stimuli. It's not as horrific an experience as her Victorian counterpart experienced, but Rutledge is still underfunded and contains Pris Witless and the Monroe twins, so it's not great either. During this time, Bumby manages to deflect all suspicion off himself for starting the fire by setting it up so it looks like the family cat, Dinah, knocked some still-burning kindling out of the fireplace, and sets up his Houndsditch Home for Wayward Youth – an orphanage for disadvantaged children looking for new homes and mental health.

September 7th, 2002: Alice shows her first sign of conscious life in years by drawing a picture of a rather more twisted Cheshire Cat than normal, as her subconscious gets tired of her laying around and plunges her into a mental fight for her life and sanity in a ruined Wonderland. Alice proceeds to battle her way across the various domains over the next year, and successfully wrests her sanity back from her corrupted counterpart, the Queen of Hearts.

November 1st, 2003: Having recovered enough to warrant living outside a care facility like Rutledge, Alice is released into the custody of one Angus Bumby, whose methods of memory management are applauded and derided in equal measure. Alice is only too eager to submit to his decree to forget the fire, but her subconscious doesn't make it easy – especially since she keeps thinking he looks familiar. . .

January 27th, 2004: Victor, taking a gap year between high school and college (to delay having to major in business like his father wants) is "strongly encouraged" to start dating his across-the-square neighbor, Victoria Everglot, daughter of viscounts Maudeline and Finis Everglot. Victor's parents think it'll be an excellent way to earn some more social status (they're millionaires many times over from the Van Dort canned fish empire, but their nouveau riche manners haven't earned them many actual friends among the elite), while the Everglots are only allowing this because they've been running on the ragged edge of "broke" for a while now and William is hinting some loans might be a side effect of letting their children date. Neither Victor nor Victoria is thrilled to be pushed into dating a near-stranger. . .but once they properly meet, they find their personalities mesh nicely, and they decide to keep seeing each other on their own terms.

May 28th, 2004: Victor and Victoria have been dating for a few months by this point, enjoying themselves and growing closer. The Everglots are growing less-thrilled with the arrangement by the minute and are constantly pushing potential alternate suitors onto Victoria – Victor assures her that he won't mind if she goes out with a couple just to shut them up, but Victoria is doing her best not to give in just so they won't believe they can run her life. On the Van Dort side, though, Nell's grown impatient with the two just dating, and manages to get Pastor Galswells to crash their date at the local coffee shop to (very reluctantly) extol the virtues of marriage. Victor is mortified and bolts – Victoria follows him, and assures him that she's willing to wait for a commitment. They manage to recover the date, even getting a prize from a little arcade game outside the laundromat – a cheap plastic ring. Victor goes on a walk afterwards in the local woods to clear his head, and ponders if he's ready to get more serious with Victoria or not. In the process, he ends up doing a mock proposal to what he thinks is a bunch of hand-like roots by an old oak, reciting the town's founder's vows and slipping the ring onto a finger.

Turns out it's actually a root-like skeletal hand, which promptly seizes Victor's wrist and tries to pull him into the dirt. Victor fights free, only for a half-rotted corpse bride to rise from the earth. He flees for the bridge – she follows and catches up before he can make it back to town. Victor faints as she goes to kiss him, and wakes in a strange and colorful world that he is informed is the Land of the Dead. Apparently everyone thinks he and the corpse – Emily – are married thanks to him speaking the vows. Victor blurts out that it was a joke – then, seeing Emily well up, clarifies he had no idea she was even there. He asks who she is and how she even came to rise – her friend Bonejangles steps in, explaining through song that she's a murdered bride, killed by the man who promised to elope with her, who vowed to wait under that tree for her true love to set her free. Victor feels awful for giving her false hope, and asks if they can talk more privately. Emily leads him to one of her favorite lookout spots, where they run into Victor's old dog Scraps (now just a skeleton). Victor apologizes for the misunderstanding, and Emily apologizes for frightening him – she was just so excited about finally being married. They talk a bit about Upstairs versus Downstairs, and Emily admits that she misses the living world and would love to see it again. Victor decides that maybe this is the least he can do for her and asks if he can take her up on a pseudo-date (after clearing it with Victoria first). Emily is all for this, and they head over to Elder Gutknecht's, the local magician, who provides them with a spell to return to the Land of the Living after sunset and stay there all night – once dawn breaks, Victor will remain, and Emily return Downstairs. They spend the time until nightfall touring the Land of the Dead – Victor finds he quite likes it and Emily, and tells her that, even if the circumstances aren't the best, he's glad he met her. She is too.

Finally, night comes, and the two return to the Living world. Emily pulls Victor into an impromptu dance in the moonlight, then Victor asks her to wait in the woods while he gets Victoria and brings her around to explain. He heads over to the Everglots. . .only to find the police there, and the Lord and Lady in a tizzy. Turns out, while he was in the woods, the elder Everglots finally talked Victoria into meeting one of their chosen men – one Lord Barkis Bittern, a newcomer to town who's been sweet-talking them. Victoria went to meet him at the coffee shop – and now they've gotten a note from Barkis saying that they'll never see her alive again unless they pony up fifty thousand pounds – a sum of money they just don't have. A horrified Victor checks in with his parents to let them know he's all right (there was some worry that he'd gotten kidnapped too), then sprints back to Emily to give her the news. Emily is equally horrified – and a little concerned, as the man who murdered her was named Edward Barkis. Victor gives her the description he got from the Everglots, in case he spotted the guy – yup, that's the bastard who killed her! Emily's certain that, even if Barkis does get the money, he'll probably kill Victoria anyway, so time is of the essence in finding her. They use the "emergency escape clause" in the spell to head back Downstairs, and explain things to Gutknecht, who agrees to help. Victor gives Gutknecht a flower Victoria gave him earlier in the day to help him track down her location, while Emily rounds up a bunch of her dead friends to storm the place and rescue her. Gutknecht finds Victoria in, of all places, the church – the gang descends on it, and finds both Galswells and Victoria tied up, with Barkis standing guard. He's – naturally a little shocked to see a bunch of walking corpses demanding he free his captives, but manages to regain his wits in time to steal General Bonesaparte's sword and duel Victor (who gets a barbecue fork from Ms. Plum that he uses rather well). Emily saves Victor from a fatal stabbing after Barkis disarms him, and a sneaky call to the police from Bonejangles summons them to save Victoria and Galswells. Barkis is brought in, Victor and Victoria are reunited, and the dead prepare to head back down Below. Victor introduces Victoria to Emily, and they thank her for her part in saving her. Emily thanks them in return, saying she was happy to spare Victoria a variation on her own fate and that she's thrilled to see her murderer finally brought to justice. She says that she'll probably be moving on for real to whatever's next soon, now that that's no longer hanging over her head, but that she'll keep them close in her heart. They say a heartfelt goodbye, and Victor and Victoria head home.

May 29th, 2004: The next day, Victoria apologies to Victor, but says the whole experience has badly rattled her and she'd like to take a break from dating while she processes it all. (In fact, she plans to take a break from the whole village, having talked her parents into reopening an abandoned summer home that they were never able to sell for a couple of months.) Victor understands – his parents do not, and he ends up on their shit list for supposedly letting her slip through his fingers. Even worse, Galswells immediately starts accusing Victor of dark sorcery because of the walking dead (never mind that they helped save his life). Few people take Galswells seriously, but even those who don't blame Victor for apparently driving the man out of his mind, and he becomes a figure of mockery and derision in the village.

July 4th, 2004: Alice, having endured about half a year of only semi-effective therapy from Bumby in the Houndsditch Home, suffers another psychotic break while visiting Pris Witless (who took to blackmailing her about a comment she made while not really with it that suggests she might have some responsibility for her family's death) and tumbles back into a freshly-corrupted Wonderland. This time, the source of her troubles isn't the Queen, but some sort of terrible Infernal Train built in the factories of Hatter's Domain, which flies across the landscape spewing a horrible black goo called Ruin everywhere. Alice battles her away across various domains trying to track down who commissioned the Train and how to stop the Ruin, while in reality she wanders in a hallucinatory daze across London over the course of about two months. During her travels, she almost drowns in the Thames after falling in; narrowly escapes a fire at her old nanny's bar (and secret brothel), set by said nanny's ex-pimp; runs afoul of the police by causing a scene at her old family lawyer's house looking for her beloved toy rabbit; and ends up briefly back at Rutledge when the local cops decide she's too much of a danger to herself to roam unsupervised. She goes catatonic again for a bit as she braves the last of her domains, and awakens with the terrible knowledge that Bumby killed her family – and worse, his activities at Houndsditch are a front for child prostitution. He isn't removing the painful memories of the children under his care – he's wiping their minds entirely and selling them to unsavory sorts! She tries to convince the staff of Rutledge of this, but none except Dr. Wilson and Nurse Darling are willing to listen to her – and even they can't do anything without proof. Superintendent Monroe forces her to return with Bumby when he comes to pick her up. . .

September 7th, 2004: So Alice confronts Bumby herself about his wrongdoings shortly afterward, cornering him in the Moorgate Underground during a quiet moment. Bumby smugly admits that she's right, claiming he's giving the children under his care a "new purpose" – and that Lizzie deserved what she got. Alice realizes that the key he uses to hypnotize people is in fact her sister's room key, and reclaims it, furiously telling him she'll go to the police with it. Bumby tells her no one will ever believe her – Alice points out the security camera, but Bumby tells her it hasn't worked for months (he made sure of that, since he uses this station to drop off kids sometimes) and that the key isn't enough to reopen her case. She can either storm off in a huff and return to the asylum, or submit to his care as the "tasty bit" he'd hoped to make her.

Alice takes a third option and pushes him in front of an oncoming train.

Fortunately, she's able to spin the incident as an accident (Bumby falling in front of the train) and – after a search of Houndsditch reveals his private journal, with the ledger for his less-savory activities – no one's much inclined to look too much into his death. Alice still thinks that it might be a good idea to get out of the country, though, just in case. Besides, after all that's happened, she craves a fresh start in a new world. She gets the help of Dr. Wilson (now the director of Houndsditch) to track down her rabbit, and prepares to go as far from London as possible – Los Angeles, California.

September 10th, 2004: Around the same time, Victor finally snaps when he receives a letter from Victoria, telling him her parents have decided not to move back to Burtonsville as they don't want to confront the memory of Barkis – or the Van Dorts. Without the hope that they'll be reunited and possibly resume their relationship, Victor decides to leave Burtonsville himself, concocting a story for his parents about wanting to go to college overseas. He too eventually decides that Los Angeles, California is the perfect place to go and starts making plans.

October 1st, 2004: Emily, having finished up what she wanted in the Underworld and said goodbye to all her friends, prepares to move on to whatever comes next. With Elder Gutknecht's help, she moves Upstairs for one final look at the moonlight before releasing her soul. . .

Only to have said soul snagged and bottled by a mysterious stranger. Trapped and only vaguely aware of what's happening to her, Emily is taken back to the Giovanni mansion, where she becomes part of a strange ritual. To her shock, the ritual restores to her a – well, semi-alive body; she's basically a very well put-together and sentient zombie. The resident Giovanni are impressed with her construction, but displeased she won't follow orders (they were expecting a servant), and lock her in the basement of their mansion for further experiments.

October 7th, 2004: Emily gains a cellmate – Lizzie Liddell! Turns out her soul was snagged by another Giovanni around the same time Emily's was, and she too was subject to the same ritual – with the same result. The two girls quickly bond over their shared backstory of "a rotten man plundered and murdered me" (if in two different ways), and their worries about their living friends (Victor and Victoria) and family (Alice).

October 10th, 2004: Getting frustrated with the failure of their latest necromantic ritual, the Giovanni try just yanking a soul straight out of the Underworld at random. By sheer chance (or perhaps the table still being contaminated with a bit of Emily's hair), they get Bonejangles, who is very surprised at going from a skeleton the Ball & Socket pub to sort-of-living man on a cold slab in a mansion in L.A. He's thrown in the basement too when he won't play ball – Emily is equal parts shocked, thrilled, and horrified to see him. Lizzie takes a little time to warm up to him, but his extremely different demeanor from Bumby and the other Oxford toadies wins her over, and soon the three are planning escape attempts and wondering just what the world outside is like. . .

October 14th, 2004: Alice arrives in Los Angeles, having reclaimed her bunny and said her goodbyes to her family's graves. She manages to snag a room at a rather crappy motel at the edges of the city, and starts looking for work and a better place to live. Unfortunately, her presence is noted by one Fish, a 7th Generation Malkavian, who sees her madness and decides that she must be brought into the clan. And what better way to lure her in than putting an ad in the paper, claiming he has an apartment for rent. . .

October 20th, 2004: Victor arrives in Los Angeles – or, more specifically, Santa Monica. He snags a rather nicer hotel room and starts trying to figure out what exactly he wants to do with himself while he's here.

Three days later, the question is answered when a drunk driver plows into him, and he ends up in the local clinic. . .

For Those New To EXO!

EXO was originally divided as EXO-K and EXO-M: “K” stood for Korean and “M” for Mandarin. One sub-unit would promote in Korea and the other would promote in China). They debuted as 12 members in 2012 with 6 per sub-unit, but two membersleft in the year 2014 (names: Kris and Luhan) and one left in 2015 (name: Tao). The reasons as to why they left are due to personal issues, health issues, and conflict with their company. A lot of fans left during those years and many people believed that they'd flop after these events. Many didn’t even believe in EXO’s success even before they lost members, that they wouldn’t become so popular. Obviously, the opposite happened.

There are only 9 members now. Ordered from oldest to youngest: Xiumin (3/26/1990), Suho (5/22/1991), Lay (10/7/1991), Baekhyun (5/6/1992), Chen (9/21/1992), Chanyeol (11/27/1992), D.O (1/12/1993), Kai (1/14/1994), Sehun (4/12/1994).

EXO debuted with the concept of being “aliens” with superpowers; coming from Exoplanet, they’re protectors of the tree of life and have come to earth in order to protect the heart of the tree of life and now earth from the red force. Each member has their own power and symbol: Xiumin-Ice, Suho-Water, Lay-Healing, Baekhyun-Light, Chen-Lightning, Chanyeol-Fire, D.O-Force/Earth, Kai-Teleportation, and Sehun-Wind. (They also each have their own number for clothing/jerseys). This superpower concept has remained in each comeback, and they’re one of the only (if not, the) groups to have such a foundation and artistic style based on the same concept for so long.

Despite people’s pessimistic view of the group, EXO was a really hyped up group by their company with a total of 23 teasers starting on December 21, 2011. Each teaser was made to slowly reveal who is who in the band, their concept, and their capabilities as rookies. This was done until March 21, 2012, and during that time two music videos were made prior to debut. Those music videos were not yet their official debut.

Side note: EXO-M only had 4 Chinese members: Kris, Luhan, Lay, and Tao. Xiumin and Chen were also in EXO-M but they are Korean.

Another side note: they still do create Chinese versions of their songs, they also had a Japanese debut in 2015 so they also have some Japanese discography as well.

ANOTHER SIDE NOTE: A sub-unit of EXO, EXO-CBX, debuted in 2016 and the member Lay also had his solo debut the same year (Lay’s solo discography are all written, arranged, and produced by him). EXO-CBX consists of the members Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin.

LAST SIDE NOTE: The EXO fandom is called EXO-L. The 'L' stands for Love. In the alphabet, the letter “L” is the 12th letter (for twelve members) and links the letters K (EXO-K) and M (EXO-M). EXO-Ls are considered to be a sub-unit of EXO so: EXO-K + EXO-L + EXO-M = One. Therefore, the band's slogan "WE ARE ONE!" means that the band members and the fans are ONE. EXO-Ls are in charge of promoting worldwide Love for EXO-K and EXO-M."

Blade of the Immortal Gets New "Complete" Anime Adaptation

It is officially confirmed today that Hiroaki Samura's Mugen no Junin/Blade of the Immortal action jidaigeki manga will get its new anime adaptation. The anime's teaser site also opens, saying it will be a "complete anime adaptation." Further details including its cast, staff, schedule, and format will be announced at a later date.

  The manga was originally serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon from June 1993 to December 2012, and compiled in 30 tankobon volumes. This is the manga's second anime adaptation, following the 13-episode TV anime animated by BeeTrain with Koichi Mashimo directing. It was also recently adapted into a live-action film by Takashi Miike in April 2017, which failed critically and commercially.   

  Meanwhile, the manga's official sequel/spin-off Mugen no Junin ~Bakumatsu no Sho~ (Blade of the

Immortal: Chapter Bakumatsu) will start serialization in Monthly Afternoon's next July 2019 issue to be

released on May 25. In cooperation with Samura, Renji Takigawa works as story writer, Ryu Suenobu

serves as illustrator.

A former child model, AJ Mclean stepped on action, playing the role of dwarf Dopey in a production of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.” At age 8, he won his big screen debut role as Little Mike in Tim Ritterâ€s horror Truth or Dare? – A Critical Madness (1986, starring John Brace and Mary Fanaro). Having accomplished handful of plays by twelve years old, AJ began learning dancing and ballet. Meanwhile, he continued acting and later packed for Orlando in 1990 for further acting career. In the fresh destination he joined an acting school, performed in minor plays and sometimes worked as a model. He also portrayed Sidney “Skunk” Duff (1991-1992) in the brief-lived sitcom “Hi Honey, I’m Home.”

AJ joined a Latin Carnival talent competition in 1992 and met future BSB co-member, Howie. The two competed in another talent look contest and met another future BSB member, Nick. BSB final members Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell joined the band in early 1993 and under Lou Pearlman management, Backstreet Boys was ready to launch their premiere concert on May 8 that same year.

Zomba/Jive spotted BSB in February 199four and four months later, the band listinged their debut single “We’ve Got It Goin’ On.” Despite the average success of the song in the US singles charts, “We’ve Got It Goin’ On” gave them the 1st Gold disc in Gera lot of. AJ and his group eventually released their self-titled debut album in UK in September 1996, which spawned the No. 14 single “Get Down (You’re the One For Me)” (1996) and the No. 4 song “Anywhere For You” (1997).

With 8.5 million discs sold internationally, Backstreet Boys had their eyes set on American success and released their first American album on August 30, 1997. The self-titled album developed the singles “Quit Playin’ Games (With My Heart)” (topped the US and the UK charts at No. 2), “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” (No. 4 US and No. 3 UK), “I’ll Never Break Your Heart” (No. 35 US and No. 42 UK) and “All I Have to Give” (No. 5 US and No. 2 UK). The album itself poled the US albums charts at No. 4 and eventually nabbed 14 times platinum. By the end of 1997, AJ and his BSB pals boarded on a 60-city, 20-country tour.

Also on August 30, 1997, Backstreet Boys released their second UK (non-US) album, Backstreet’s Back. It spawned the No. 3 UK charts single “As Long As You Love Me” and reproduced several songs from the previous album. Backstreet’s Back reached the UK albums charts at No. 2.

On June 5, 1999, AJ and his band released their sophomore worldwide album, Millennium (UK release May 1999). It spawned the 1999 singles “I Want It That Way” (No. 6 US, No. 1 UK) and “Larger Than Life” (No. 25 US, No. 5 UK). Another singles followed, the 2000’s “Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely” (No. 6 US, No. 3 UK) and “The One” (No. 30 US, No. 8 UK). Millennium stayed on top of the US Billboard 200 albums charts for 10 weeks and hit the UK albums chart at No. 2. It eventually received 13 times platinum.

Black & Blue, Backstreet Boys third American album, hit the music stores on December 9, 2000. It produced the 2000 single “Shape of My Heart” (No. 9 US, No. 4 UK), and the 2001 songs “The Call” (No. 56 US, No. 8 UK) and “More Than That” (No. 27 US, No. 12 UK). Black & Blue sold 1.6 million copies in its first week and peaked the US Billboard 200 albums charts at No. 1 for two weeks (only charted at No. 13 in UK). It sold about 5.4 million copies in the US and finally nabbed 8 times platinum certification.

AJ and his band release a greatest hits album, The Hits: Chapter One on November 17, 2001, which spotted the US Billboard 200 albums charts at No. 4 and scored a platinum. They released their last single, the No. 28 US and the No. 4 UK “Drowning.” During that time, AJ appeared as a guest playing DJ Naughty in Ken Hastings†romantic comedy Olive Juice (2001, starring Leighanne Littrell and James Berlau).

“This is music for the masses. This is something that can bring men and women together. They can all sit with their family and enjoy a good quality record. This is not a record that parents truly feel they have to be cautious or wary of their kids listening to or that it might be a bad influence on people. We always try to strive on doing positive music and if you listen to what’s on the radio nowadays it’s pretty much about how much money you got or how many cars you got or how much jewelry you got or even how many times you’ve been shot.” AJ Mclean (on Backstreet Boys new album Never Gone).

After taking a well-deserved break for nearly five years, AJ and Backstreet Boys came back to the music scene on March 28, 2005 with their brand new single, “Incomplete.” The song spotted the US Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart at No. 13 and reached No. 8 at the UK charts. On June 14, 2005, AJ and BSB marked their return to the pop landscape with the release of their fifth studio release, Never Gone. The album stayed the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart at No. 3 for 7 weeks (No. 11, 2 weeks UK charts) and netted platinum so far. They also launched the next song, “Just Want You To Know.”

Nerdy News & Discoveries - July 30, 2018

I feel like there is so much going on in the bookish industry so I thought it was time for an update. Read below for all the latest news and let me know what you think!

Book Piracy

Apparently, this is still a thing? This week the topic of book piracy blew up the twitter feed. I'm still in shock there are two sides to create an argument. Some people are arguing that book piracy allows people with no money to be able to read creative works of authors...which seems a moot point because guess what? THERE ARE SUCH A THING AS LIBRARIES. Then the other side of the coin opposes book piracy because authors deserve to be paid the money they deserve...I mean they are the creators after all so why shouldn't they?

Sometimes I wonder if people don't know the amount of work that goes into a novel (let alone a book series). Authors pour over ideas and thoughts somehow with their imagination then turn that into an outline. Then the process goes something like this: first draft, many drafts, revision, editing, publishing, and finally marketing as well as events on top of that to help promote their work. In a way I almost feel like authors are underpaid, but what can you do? Anyways, you can check out the latest tweets and decide for yourself.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Musical

Most of us know about the infamous traveling pants - a magical piece of clothing that just happens to fit all 4 girlfriends and brings them together despite their travels away from each other. First, it was a book series, then it came out with two movies, and now we can say it has a musical in the works! There aren't any details as of yet for when it will be coming out, but it is definitely a work in progress!

If you're from the 90's decade (like myself) you have a great love for all of the culture that has greatly shifted since that time period. Labeled as the "Millenials", we are known as "the nostalgic generation" and we're totally okay with this.

As an ode to the 90's, the Bookstagrammer, Bridget Thomas, has invented the #Totally90sBookChallenge. The last bookish challenge filled the hashtag with 90s music inspired novels (seriously regretting I hadn't known about it sooner-yeah, you're not the only one). August's theme will be 90's TV shows and you can find the book challenge prompts over on @BridgetsBookstagram. The book challenge starts on August 1st, so be there or be square in the 00's! It's your choice.

Hocus Pocus and the All New Sequel

I'm not sure if you've heard anything in the recent news involving Hocus Pocus, but there's been the talk of a sequel going around. Unfortunately, the sequel isn't revolving around the movie franchise, BUT you can go purchase it in book format which became available on July 10, 2018. To All the Boys I've Loved Before

I'm not sure if you've heard about this...so let me be the first to tell you (if you haven't yet) - "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" by Jenny Han is being released as a movie! SAY WHAT!?! YUP! They released a teaser trailer back in June, but have just recently posted the full trailer so go watch it over on Buzzfeed! The movie will be available for your viewing pleasure on August 17, 2018 via the Netflix streaming service!

And for those of you that haven't read it (myself included) here's the book info. over on Goodreads in case you wanted to add it to your TBR. You better get reading if you want an accurate book to movie adaptation opinion to put out into the world. But seriously, this movie looks so cute and gives you all the feels! Eeeeeep!
