"From Oak to Java: Tracing the Evolution of a Revolutionary Programming Language"
Java's Origins:
Java, an Object-Oriented programming language, was conceived by James Gosling in the early 1990s, with the goal of creating a language for digital devices like set-top boxes and televisions. Initially considering C++ but facing memory constraints, Gosling shifted to creating a new platform, initially named "Greentalk," with the file extension .gt, which later transformed into "OAK."
Tumblr media
Choosing "Oak":
The name "Oak" was inspired by an oak tree near Gosling's office, symbolizing strength and also being the national tree of several countries. However, due to trademark conflicts with Oak Technologies, the project was eventually renamed "JAVA" after an extensive brainstorming session, which included several other options like DNA, SILK, and RUBY. The unique and memorable nature of "Java," derived from a type of coffee bean, led to its selection, a name inspired by a coffee break near Gosling's office.
Java's Journey:
Built on principles of robustness, portability, platform independence, high performance, and multithreading, Java was recognized as one of the Ten Best Products of 1995 by TIME MAGAZINE. Presently, Java finds application in various domains such as internet programming, mobile devices, games, and e-business solutions.
Java's Evolution:
Over the years, Java has undergone significant transformations since JDK 1.0, with numerous additions and extensions to the standard library, expanding from a few hundred classes in JDK 1.0 to over three thousand in J2SE 5.

"¡Viva Puerto Rico libre!”
Tumblr media
Lolita Lebrón
Amid all the righteous shrieking and arm-flapping that accompanied the coverage of the January 6th storming of the U.S. Capitol by a mob of yahoos and half-wits, commentator after commentator proclaimed such an assault on the sanctity of The People’s House was unprecedented, at least since the torching of the Capitol building during the War of 1812. If your limiting the parameters to “A mob of yahoos and half-wits spurred on by clumsy bald-faced lies and ridiculous conspiracy theories stormed the Capitol building, convinced they’d be able to overturn the results of a presidential election by making a terrible mess,” then yes, sure, I can’t think of a comparable example in our history. If, however, these commentators are speaking in more general terms about violent, politically-motivated attacks inside the American International Pictures logo, then I’m afraid, yet again, a brief history lesson is in order. Let’s work our way backwards from January 6th.
In a strange and eerie precedent, if on a smaller scale, on the afternoon of July 24th, 1998, Russell E. Weston Jr. stormed through the Capitol’s document door, an entrance generally reserved for elected officials and their staffs. According to interviews after the fact, Weston was a paranoid schizophrenic off his meds who was convinced America was about to be besieged both by a strange new disease and an army of cannibals, and wanted our nation’s leaders to know about it.
Tumblr media
Jacob Chestnut, Jr.
When Weston zipped through the metal detector just inside the entrance, the .38 Smith & Wesson revolver he was carrying set off the alarm. After Capitol police officer Jacob Chestnut, Jr. asked him to kindly back up and go through the machine again, Westin drew his revolver and shot Chestnut in the head, killing him. He then took off down the hall, ducking into what turned out to be a suite of offices occupied by senior Republican congressmen. At that particular moment, it was also occupied by plainclothes special agent John Gibson, who’d drawn security detail that day. Weston promptly shot Gibson as well, but before he died, Gibson returned fire, shooting Weston four times. Weston survived, and is presently still being held in an institute for the criminally insane.
Fifteen years earlier, on November 7th, 1983, members of a third-rate radical group calling themselves The Armed Resistance Unit (ARU) planted a bomb on the second floor of the Senate Wing. When it went off around midnight, no one was hurt, but the blast did cause an estimated $250,000 in damage. A communique released by the ARU said the bombing was in response to American military action in Grenada and Lebanon. Thirteen years before that, on March 1st, 1971, The Weathermen, in what would soon be recognized as their standard m.o., planted a bomb in one of the Capitol’s many bathrooms. Again it was timed to go off in the middle of the night. No one was hurt, but the next day a few people were inconvenienced. In taking credit for the bombing, The Weathermen claimed it was in response to the continued U.S. bombing of Laos. Or maybe just Laotian bathrooms—amid all the hippie lingo and Marxist doggerel, it was hard to tell.
But those were all small potatoes, tepid attacks waged by crazy people driven by delusional fantasies and supposed revolutionary groups who had no clear idea what a real revolution entailed. But exactly seventeen years before the Weathermen, in essence, flushed an M-80 down a congressional toilet and called it a mighty blow against U.S. imperialism, it was a different story, which may explain why it’s so forgotten today.
In order to fully understand the events of March 1st, 1954, we need to step back a ways, to the end of the Spanish-American War.
As part of the 1898 Treaty of Paris, which brought the war to its end, Spain handed control of Puerto Rico over to the U.S.. There was just one problem with this. A year earlier, in the 1897 Carta de Autonomía, Spain had already granted Puerto Rico independence from colonial rule, meaning come the end of their scuffle with the States, Spain was no longer in any position to be handing Puerto Rico over to anyone.
Well, everyone seemed to overlook this little technicality, and Puerto Rico became an American commonwealth.
In 1950, Congress passed the Puerto Rico Federal Relations Act, which declared the U.S. would continue to provide security for Puerto Rico and handle any international treaties that might involve them.  At the same time, the people of Puerto Rico would be free to elect their own government, so long as the U.S. approved of their choices. While Puerto Ricans would be considered U.S. citizens, they would not be allowed to vote for president, nor would they have any representatives in Congress.
This did not sit especially well with the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party, which had been pushing for Puerto Rican sovereignty since its formation in 1922.
The ruling (and U.S.-backed) People’s Democratic Party, however, gave the passage of the Congressional act a big thumb’s up. In response, the Nationalists, still calling for the recognition of the 1897 Carta de Autonomía, launched a sloppy and bloody revolt in cities across Puerto Rico. The uprising was quickly squashed with a little help from the PDP’s friends to the North, who provided both manpower and military hardware.
Two Puerto Rican nationals living in New York at the time, Griselio Torresola and Oscar Collazo, had a better idea. Down in Washington, with the White House undergoing renovations, Harry Truman had taken up temporary residence in Blair House, the presidential guest house. He was a sitting duck, they figured. Freedom-loving people around the world may have been able to ignore a little three-day skirmish in their homeland, but they wouldn’t be able to ignore the assassination of a U.S. president.
The pair armed themselves and took a train down to Washington. Once they arrived at Blair House, apparently convinced they’d simply be able to kick in the front door and shoot Truman, Torresola and Collazo were surprised to find the place guarded by dozens of secret service agents, city cops, and White House security officers. In the brief gun battle that ensued, Torresola was killed, as was one of the cops. Collazo was taken into custody and later sentenced to death. Two years later in 1952, Truman commuted his sentence to life in prison.
Also in 1952, gleaning that the natives were getting restless, Truman decided it might be wise to appease them by offering a simple vote on the matter. So later that year, the people of Puerto Rico, given the chance to put a free and open democracy into action, went to the polls, where they were freely and openly allowed to choose between the kind of limited autonomy they presently experienced, or complete U.S. control. The fact that “independence” was not among the choices offered was lost on nobody, especially the Nationalists, who for the most part skipped the vote. Those who did vote overwhelmingly chose to stick with limited autonomy.
A radical wing of the Nationalist Party, enraged by the scam of a so-called referendum, began hatching a plan to call attention to the struggles of the Puerto Rican independence movement.
Initially, the four-person team—Lolita Lebrón, Andrés Figueroa Cordero, Rafael Cancel Miranda and Irvin Flores Rodríguez—decided to launch a series of violent attacks around Washington, coinciding with the opening of the Interamerican Conference in Caracas on March first, 1954. As the date approached, however, Lolita Lebrón, self-appointed leader of the group, decided splitting up to try and hit several targets at once around Washington was maybe not the wisest move. They’d get better results if they concentrated their efforts on a single target—namely the U.S. Congress.
So on the morning of March 1st, like Torresola and Collazo before them, Lebrón met the other three at Grand Central Station. Armed with semiautomatic pistols, they boarded a train for Washington. Upon arriving, they marched straight to the Capitol building and found themselves seats at the back of one of the visitors galleries overlooking the House floor.
Down on the floor, Congress was debating whether or not to continue allowing Mexican immigrants to work as migrant laborers on American soil. Upon Lebrón’s signal, a cry of "¡Viva Puerto Rico libre!,” the four stood, unfurled a Puerto Rican flag, pulled their guns and began firing.
After she was arrested, Lebrón insisted she’d only fired hers at the ceiling, saying, "I did not come to kill anyone, I came to die for Puerto Rico.” The other three, however, apparently hadn’t been paying attention during the planning sessions, and began shooting at Congress members. Cordero’s gun jammed, but Miranda more than picked up the slack, firing an estimated 30 rounds into the panicking Congressmen below. Three Democrats and two Republicans were struck, one seriously, but all five survived. All four Nationalists were arrested at the scene.
In June, after a 12-day trial in federal court on attempted murder and weapons charges, the four were found guilty, though Lebrón was found guilty of the lesser charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Although the prosecution had been pushing for the death penalty given the crime involved an attack on the very heart of American democracy, the judge instead handed down consecutive prison terms, fifty years for Lebrón and seventy-five years each for the other three.
In October, they were brought back to court to face further federal conspiracy charges. They were found guilty once again, and the judge tacked another six years onto their sentences. The four were then split up and sent to four different federal prisons.
Two decades after the attack on Congress, the next generation of radical Puerto Rican nationals calling themselves FALN, still fighting for Puerto Rican sovereignty, began a bombing campaign across the U.S.. It’s estimated they detonated over 130 bombs in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and other major cities, most notably the 1975 lunch time bombing of the historic Fraunces Tavern in the Financial District, which killed four Wall Street types.
In 1978, as the bloody, decade-long FALN bombing campaign rolled on, Figueroa Cordero was released from prison after serving 23 years of his 81-year sentence. The next year, then-President Jimmy Carter commuted the sentences of the other three. Some say it was part of a prisoner exchange deal to secure the release of several CIA agents imprisoned in Cuba, while others believe it may have been a direct response to the FALN, who, among other things, had been demanding the release of their revolutionary forbears.
Today, the Puerto Rican Nationalist attack on Congress and the FALN’s deadly decade-long bombing spree remain mostly forgotten. Meanwhile the bumbling rich-kid antics of The Weathermen and the merely bubbling antics of the Symbionese Liberation Army remain firmly entrenched in the American consciousness. The reasons for this are fairly simple and merely part of a long pattern. Groups like The Weathermen and the SLA may not have had any clear plans, may not have been driven by any personal injustices, and may not have accomplished much save for the kidnapping of one rich white girl, but they had great p.r.. They were (mostly) white, they were photogenic, and they didn’t really bother anyone. The four Puerto Rican Nationalists, the FALN and other forgotten groups like the Black Liberation Army were motivated by personal injustices. Their anger was justified, they did some real damage, and that made them a dangerous threat to those in power. They were also, y’know, a bunch of dirty Hispanics and Blacks, so better to just bury the issue. Who cares?

Hip Hop History: Top Ten Soulquarian Tracks
Words by Lily D’Amato
Neo-Soul’s popularity rose to its peak in the mid 1990s, coinciding with the genesis of the Soulquarians. The Soulquarians were a hip hop/soul collective centered around neosoul “it boy” D’Angelo, songwriter and producer James Poyser, The Root’s ?uestlove, and Slum Village’s producer J Dilla.  Initially interacting at informal jam sessions and parties at the Black Lily nightclub in Philadelphia, D’Angelo and ?uestlove decided to relocate to Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village to begin work on D’Angelo’s second studio album, Voodoo.  Erykah Badu, the rest of The Roots, Common, and a plethora of other neo-soul artists would soon follow the duo, each working on projects of their own.  The collaboration led to the creation of some of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 90s, including Erykah Badu’s Mama’s Gun and The Roots’ Things Fall Apart.  Although the Soulquarian Era had mostly dissipated by the early 2000s, its impacts have reverberated to contemporary hip-hop and R&B, influencing artists like Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, and The Internet.
Send it On - D’Angelo
Send it On’s tight harmonies, deeply personal lyrics about faith in love, and unforgettable groove make it one of D’Angelo’s best tracks. Co-written by D’Angelo’s ex-girlfriend Angie Stone and his brother Luther Archer, the song peaked at number 33 on Billboard’s Top 100.  One Billboard Magazine reviewer highlighted the development of D’Angelo’s distinct vocal style “which bears an undeniable resemblance to Prince, Al Green, and Otis Redding.” Roy Hargrove’s flugelhorn bolsters the velvet-like smoothness of the song and offers new texture to the song’s heavy bass section.  Complex and absorbing, listening to Send it On is like being inundated with harmony from every direction.
Erykah Badu - Bag Lady
Bag Lady, Badu’s first single since her 1997 album Baduizm, uses a seemingly ordinary story to explore themes of “self-love, self-discovery, unrequited love, gender conflict and communication, emotional and psychological bruising, failure, redemption, and personal fulfillment for black women.”  The sparse percussion section and sleek guitar sample from Dr. Dre’s ”Xxplosive” interact with Badu’s creamy vocals to emphasize the subject matter, alternating between moments of empowerment and moments of tragic, intimate honesty. The video that accompanies the song alludes to Ntozake Shange’s 1975 drama For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf, criticizing the racialized inadequacies of public education in America.
The Roots - Double Trouble
The creation of Things Fall Apart, The Root’s 1999 studio album, began when ?uestlove played Premier, Dilla, and D’Angelo “Double Trouble” and was underwhelmed by their reactions.  Tenacious in his quest for their respect, he went ahead and made “Double Trouble” one of the best tracks The Roots have ever created. He re-recorded the drum loop and fiddled with the EQ to give it an air of separation, providing rapper’s Black Thought and Mos Def with what Pitchfork’s Michael Moore describes as a “hard charging instrumental to match [their] verbal dexterity.”
Common - Song for Assata
Produced by James Poyser, Song for Assata narrates the life of Black Panther Assata Shakur. Assata Shakur, who was convicted of the murder of a New Jersey State Trooper in the early 70s, escaped prison in 1979, living in Cuba under political asylum since 1984. The song features CeeLo Green, who was, at the time, a member of the Atlanta hip hop group Goodie Mob.  His beautiful, melodic chorus comes in stark contrast to Common’s violent bars, which describe Assata’s story in an effort to “make this movement towards freedom/For all those who have been oppressed/and all those in the struggle.”  The social activism that characterizes Song for Assata makes it one of the most significant Soulquarian tracks, showcasing the group’s political and cultural ideology and their desire to bring about systemic change.
The Roots - Step into the Realm
Things Fall Apart is widely accepted to be The Root’s most fully realized record to date. The oscillating drum loop on Step into the Realm, the fourth track off the album, makes the bars “even more urgent... [and introduces an atmosphere] of chaos” says Pitchfork writer Marcus Moore.  The juxtaposition between the clarity of the drums and the distorted vocals creates drama that makes the song exciting, mildly terrifying, and addictive. This track leads The Root’s into a new psychedelic sound, rerouting them momentarily away from jazz towards the current of 90s hip-hop.
Slum Village - What it’s All About
Slum Village’s Fantastic Vol. 2 was finished under A&M Records in 1998, just before the label went bankrupt, leaving the group in a lerch for over a year.  Finally, the album was released with Good Vibe Recordings and Barak Records in early 2000 and was well received by critics and listeners alike.  Sampling Alicia Meyer’s Don’t Stop What You’re Doin’, What’s It All About, produced solely by J Dilla, features Busta Rhymes at his finest.  Self assured and playful, his bars rest perfectly between the serene siren like vocal sample and distorted adlibs, allowing for Dilla’s beat, arguably the real star of the show, to shine through.
D’Angelo - Chicken Grease
Originally slated for Common’s Like Water For Chocolate, Chicken Grease embodies the relaxation and ease which its lyrics promote.  Supposedly named after a term coined by Prince in reference to strumming chords in a specific 16th note pattern, the song serves as Voodoo’s integrative centerpiece. Pino Palladino’s bass and harmony epitomize the quintessential “in the pocket” rhythm section that has become the defining characteristic of Neo-Soul, delicately cradling D’Angelo’s subtle overdubbed vocals.  Funky and spiritualized, Chicken Grease’s analog rhythm and seemingly simple yet wildly brilliant theme exemplifies the best aspects of the Soulquarian era.
Erykah Badu - Green Eyes
Green Eyes, an agonizing ten minute three part meditation on Badu’s breakup with OutKast’s Andre 3000 in 2000, broadcasts her vulnerability, shedding the overconfident facade she broadcasted on Baduizm.  In the first section of the song, Badu almost protects her usual smug attitude, but ultimately reveals her disillusionment in the second movement, while supported by feathery symbols and a quiet but driving percussion section.  The third part, which uses horns to accentuate a more propulsive rhythm, sees Badu slightly more empowered but relatably confused. Green Eyes’ transparency humanizes Badu’s self-righteous persona, combining her musical virtuosity with an captivating sense of self.
Common - The 6th Sense
The 6th Sense, released in 2000, opens with the lyrics “the revolution will not be televised”, referencing the Gil-Scott Heron song of the same name and advancing Like Water For Chocolate’s clear political and social agenda.  The first single off the album, the song is often heralded as one of Common’s classics; Pitchfork writer Taylor Clark agrees, noting that “Common gets iller than Syphilis over an addictive track provided by Gang Starr’s DJ Premier.” The song also features Common’s fellow Soulquarian Bilal on the chorus, using his lofty vocals to underscore the weight of his messages concerning afrocentricity and the harsh reality of life on the street.
Mos Def - Know That
Black on Both Sides, released in October of 1999 by rapper Mos Def, deals with the socio economic issues facing African Americans, offering a positive yet sobering take on urban reality and notably departing from the increasingly violent undertones of contemporary gangsta rap.  Featuring Talib Kweli and sampling their joint album Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are Black Star, Know That articulates a tangible confidence through Mos Def’s decisive rhymes and lyrical complexity.  In one line, he raps “The streets is watchin me, I watch back, that's the policy”, indicating a sense of mutual respect and reverence placed on the shoulders’ of black rappers and musicians, specifically those with as much cultural prowess as the Soulquarians, by their home communities. The ostinato on the keys, ever present record scratching, and call and response between Def and Kweli towards the end, makes Know That groovable, insightful, and infectious.
Although the Soulquarian Era had mostly dissipated by the early 2000s, its impacts have reverberated to contemporary hip-hop and R&B, informing more critical analysis of hip-hop by professional and casual listeners alike. The inclusion of intricate lyrics, analog rhythms, and a prominent social justice tenor in the music of Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, and The Internet cement neo-soul’s legacy, legitimizing its influence in the popularization of rap and hip-hop.

Eric Benét

Eric Benét Jordan (born October 15, 1966), known professionally as Eric Benét, is an American R&B and neo soul singer-songwriter, who has received a total of four Grammy nominations to date for his musical work.
Biography
Benét was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and is the youngest of five siblings.
Benét sang with a Top 100-style group called Gerard in the late 1980s. Benét, his sister Lisa, and his cousin George Nash Jr. formed a band called Benét and released a self-titled album in 1992, and it went on to sell over 100,000 copies. Two years later, Eric Benét broke onto the music scene with his solo career and signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing his debut solo album, True to Myself in 1996. His second album, A Day in the Life, was released in 1999 and featured his smash hit "Spend My Life With You (featuring Tamia)". The song rose to #1 on the US Billboard R&B charts (for 3 weeks), was certified gold, and nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award for "Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group". The album also won a Soul Train Music Award for "Best R&B/Soul Album, Male".
Benét's career, however, was interrupted by a series of personal tragedies. His father died of cancer. In addition his girlfriend, Tami Marie Stauff, died on April 24, 1993, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident, leaving Eric a single father to their one-year-old daughter, India (born 1991). Mom Joyce Jordan.
He married actress Halle Berry in January 2001, but by early October 2003 they had separated, with the divorce finalized in January 2005.
On July 31, 2011, he married Prince's ex-wife, Manuela Testolini, who gave birth to their first child, a girl named Lucia Bella, on December 21, 2011. They welcomed their second daughter together, Amoura Luna, in July 2014.
Career
In 1994, Benét signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing his solo debut album, True to Myself in 1996. Individual songs from the album were successful, including the top-ten R&B hits "Spiritual Thang", "Femininity" and "Let's Stay Together", which originally appeared on the soundtrack of the film A Thin Line Between Love and Hate.
In between albums, Eric collaborated with his then-labelmates Somethin' for the People on their 1997 album This Time It's Personalsinging leads on the single "Act Like You Want It". His next album, A Day in the Life, was released in 1999. Its first single, "Georgy Porgy (featuring Faith Evans)" received significant airplay, but the second single, "Spend My Life With You (featuring Tamia)", became a smash hit. "Spend My Life With You" rose to number one on the American R&B charts, was certified gold, and nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. The album, A Day in the Life also won a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album, Male.
Benét also recorded for Earth, Wind, and Fire's 30th anniversary CD. He contributed vocals to the post-Katrina charity single, "Heart of America" along with Michael McDonald, Wynonna Judd, and Terry Dexter. He has also lent his vocals to many jazz albums for such artists as Wayman Tisdale, George Duke, Chris Botti, Jeff Lorber, Boney James, etc.
Benét recorded his following album Better and Better in 2001, but Warner Bros. rejected to release this album and forced him to stay in the R&B genre. Due to the controversy about music style and creative freedom, Benét changed to Reprise-distributed label Friday Records and recorded his next album, Hurricane. Thus Hurricane became his third (released) studio album on June 21, 2005 in the US. "I Wanna Be Loved" was the song that received the most airplay. The single reached number two on the Urban Adult Contemporary chart.
His fourth album Love & Life was released on September 9, 2008. It debuted at number eleven on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, making this his own highest peak position since A Day in the Life in 1999. The first single "You're the Only One" is also his first top 20 hit on the R&B chart in two years.
Lost in Time was Benét's fifth studio album which was released in the US on November 30, 2010. The first single "Sometimes I Cry" reached number one on the Hot Adult R&B Songs Chart. With its musical direction representing Benet's homage to the sweet soul sound of the early to mid-1970s, the album featured duets with Faith Evans; Chrisette Michelle; Ledisi; and Eddie Levert of The O'Jays.
On June 5, 2012 Eric then released his latest album The One. It was the first album released on Benét's newly formed record label Jordan House Records, which he created in partnership with EMI. "Real Love" was the first single off The One and was the #1 added song to Urban AC when shipped to radio in October 2011.
In 2013 Eric Benet's 6th studio album, The One, won him the SoulTracks Readers' Choice Award for Best Male Vocalist. The Onedelivered 3 big hit tracks including 'Runnin,' 'Real Love,' and 'Harriett Jones.'
In April 2014, Benet signed R&B singer-songwriter Calvin Richardson and Goapele to his imprint along with BMG/Primary Wave Music to release their upcoming albums in the US.
In 2014, Eric Benet released an international album, The Other One, teaming up with the European production collective, The Afropeans to revisit his 2012 album The One.
Later that year, he then released an album of classic cover songs, exclusively distributed in Japan, titled, From E to U, Vol. 1.
In April 2016, he announced a new single "Sunshine" set to premiere on May 13, ahead of his eighth studio album due in the fall.
On October 7, 2016 Benét released his eponymous seventh studio album and first major album release since 2012's "The One", the album featured guest appearances from Tamia, Arturo Sandoval and MC Lyte.
Acting career
Benét has also been active as an actor; he had a recurring role on For Your Love (TV series) (1998–2002). He made his film debut alongside Mariah Carey in Glitter (2001). He has a recurring role on the MTV scripted show Kaya (2007) where he plays a music producer. Benet appeared on Half & Half in which he portrayed Reece Wilcox in 2005.
His second feature film role Trinity Goodheart premiered at the American Black Film Festival on July 9, 2011 and is set to premiere on GMC on August 20, 2011.
In Fall of 2013, Eric Benet brought his talents to the television screen when he appeared on the second season of BET's hit television show, The Real Husbands of Hollywood. Benet introduced the world to his comedic skills as a guest star alongside Kevin Hart, Bobby Brown, and Boris Kodjoe. The Real Husbands of Hollywood is filmed in a style similar to that of Bravo's popular television series, The Real Housewives.

Doom WADs’ Roulette (1999): KZDoom1
Let’s talk about ZDoom for a minute.
Tumblr media
Initially released on March 6th, 1998, ZDoom was a source that was originally based on a merger of both ATB Doom and NDOOM. Unlike Boom (in which its last update was on October ‘99 with version 2.02), it reached its peak in 2016, with its final version being 2.8.1. It ended up being discontinued, with GZDoom (that yours truly uses to this day) being declared its successor.
Not only ZDoom was able to support almost everything that Boom offers, but it was also able to support other games based on Doom Engine. But that’s all I’ll say about this source port. Let me give you sites where you can learn more about it:
DoomWiki
ZDoom Wiki
And now, let’s get into today’s WAD.
#3: KZDoom1
Tumblr media
Main author(s): Kurt Kesler
Release date: April 6th, 1999 (updated version, database)
Version(s) played: Bug fixed
Required port compatibility: ZDoom
Levels: 1 (MAP01)
Ah yes, another case of a WAD that is part of a bigger series. This time though, we are thankfully starting from the beginning. Not wasting any more time, let’s take a look at the first WAD that we will play that requires a ZDoom-compatible port.
Tumblr media
Here is the deal: KZDoom1 looks magnificent! You might not think about it at first since it may look like your typical industrial factory, but the devil is in the details people. These little things that ZDoom makes possible make this WAD’s design go from good at best to amazing. The things like spinning turbines, doors that open like an actual one without any tricks, particle effects, sludge going from one place to another, up and down. Something in these little details fascinates me.
Tumblr media
As for the gameplay side, there are also some changes, but not that many (most of the new stuff, I’ve already mentioned above). You start up in the industrial factory that I’ve mentioned, then you exit it and end up in mountain terrain. At some point, there will be an earthquake that will reveal the way to exit the level.
Your Shotgun can shoot much faster now, and some of the Imps turn completely invisible for a moment before attacking/getting hurt/dying. Some (if not all) of the low-tier enemies got buffed, having more health and being faster.
Tumblr media
The difficulty is… hmm… how to put… It kinda stinks.
Now listen, having a hard WAD is not the problem (hell, that’s why many people love the WADs), buffing up enemies to spice it all up is not the problem, invisible Imps are not the problem (Chaingun helps a lot in this case). But it becomes the problem when you decide to buff the hitscanners too.
The Shotgun may be faster, but it doesn’t really help in this WAD since all types of hitscanners have so much more health that they can survive one direct shot from it. All of them, all the time, from what I experienced. Hitscanners were rarely fun for me to kill, but this time, it was a complete annoyance due to their artificially increased health.
At least Imps (who were also buffed) weren’t as annoying as far as I remember (and their projectiles can be ridiculously fast sometimes). And come to think of it, KZDoom1 wasn’t really that hard. I was kind of expecting some Hell after reading a warning to grab the Rocket Launcher before using the red key, but I don’t think it would really change anything for the worse. Compared with something like Hell Revealed that I played, KZDoom1 is like a wet fart.
Tumblr media
So, this WAD is basically a mixed bag for me. KZDoom1 may have questionable decisions with buffed enemies but to be honest, I can’t hate this WAD for how it looks. Yet another milestone in the design department thanks to source ports.
Tumblr media
Next time, we will be having a trip back to the first Doom, with an episode replacement.
See you next time.
Bye!

Invasive European Green Crabs Found in the Wa’atch and Tsoo-Yess Rivers
Blogger’s note: This article originally appeared in the Kitsap Sun and was written by by Adrianne Akmajian, Marine Ecologist, Makah Fisheries Management

Trapping results
On October 4th – 6th, the Makah Fisheries Management Department led an effort to detect invasive European green crab (Carcinus maenas) in the Wa’atch and Tsoo-Yess rivers. This effort was organized after a confirmed report of the invasive crab was reported to the Makah Tribe by Washington Sea Grant (WSG) Crab Team and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program. In late August, a member of the public found and photographed a European green crab in the intertidal near the Wa’atch River mouth and reported the sighting to the WSG Crab Team. After this initial report, staff from the Fisheries Department conversed with experts from the WSG Crab Team, WDFW AIS Program, and US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) AIS Program to get advice on how to respond.
Based on guidance from these agencies, the Fisheries Department decided that a rapid effort to set traps for the invasive crabs would be crucial to begin to assess the extent of crab infestation on the Makah Reservation. WSG Crab Team assisted the Fisheries Department in selecting locations of where to set traps for the crabs using aerial imagery of the Wa’atch and Tsoo-Yess river valleys to look for the green crab’s preferred habitat – side channels off the main river with soft mud bottoms, undercut banks, and salt water exposure. A date for the initial trapping effort was set, and traps, trapping gear, and bait were provided to the Tribe by WDFW and delivered to the Fisheries Office by a staff member from USFWS. Over this three-day effort, a total of 13 staff from the Fisheries Department as well as one staff member from USFWS and a volunteer of Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge assisted with this effort.
On October 4th, a total of 79 traps (a mix of minnow traps and Fukui traps) were set in the Wa’atch River between Wa’atch Point and Second Bridge (73 traps) and at the mouth of the Tsoo-Yess River (6 traps). Traps were checked on the 5th and 6th, native species were released, and green crabs were retained for euthanasia. All green crab were photographed and data was collected on their size, sex, and condition. In total, we captured 34 European green crabs, 22 males and 12 females, found both in the Wa’atch and Tsoo-Yess rivers. Crabs ranged in size approximately 1 – 3 inches, indicating that the crabs were most likely from the 2016 and 2017 brood classes and that the larger individuals could reproduce.
Tumblr media

How worried should we be?
European green crab are excellent invaders, tolerating a wide range of conditions including temperatures from 0-35° C (32-95° F), salinity from 4-54 ppt (seawater is 35 ppt), and low oxygen conditions including extended periods of time outside of water. Green crab are predators of native bivalves and can outcompete native juvenile Dungeness crabs for habitat and food resources and lead to decline of native shore crabs. Green crab can also impact important shoreline habitat by burrowing into the mud and disrupting eel grass beds. If populations of green crab are not controlled, they could potentially impact important natural resources and habitats on the Reservation.
While our capture of 34 green crab is more than we expected to find, it is lower than the number of crabs caught in other locations. The first sightings of green crab in Washington were in 1998 in Willapa Bay and Grays Harbor; in the first year, over 300 green crabs were captured and by 2003 over 1000 crabs had been captured . On Vancouver Island, although green crab were first reported in 1999, dedicated surveys for the crab did not begin until 2006. From 2006-2008, thousands of green crab were caught from Barkley Sound west to Winter Harbor. When populations are small, they are easier to control and we plan to begin aggressive trapping for green crabs in 2018 to reduce and ideally eradicate the populations from the Reservation.

 Next steps…
Beginning next spring through early fall, we plan to begin aggressive trapping in the Wa’atch and Tsoo-Yess rivers and to commence some exploratory trapping inside of Neah Bay. At this time, the Fisheries Department is currently applying for funding to purchase our own set of trapping equipment. We hope to hire at least one student intern to assist with this project and gain hands on experience working in the field and collecting data. We will also be recruiting volunteers who are able to assist with trapping 1-2 times per month from April through September. We will provide training for volunteers on how to identify the invasive green crab and other native species that we might catch, how to set the traps, and on what data to collect. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact the Marine Ecologist at the contact info provided below.
 How can you help?
The Fisheries Department is requesting that community members report sightings of European green crab. To report a sighting, please include:
- Photograph of the crab
- Date, time, and location
- Details of the sighting including whether the crab was alive, dead, or a molt, an estimate of size of the crab, and sex
-Please only remove or collect molts (empty shell) or dead crabs
- For live crabs, please confirm the sighting with a staff member from the Fisheries Department who will provide further instructions
Please report your sightings to the Makah Fisheries Department via the Marine Ecologist: Adrianne Akmajian at [email protected] or (360) 645-3079, (360) 640-0035
More information about the European green crab can be found online by visiting https://wsg.washington.edu/crabteam/greencrab/ or http://wdfw.wa.gov/ais/carcinus_maenas/ or by contacting the Marine Ecologist using the contact info above.

I absolutely LOVE your blog, your artistic style, your headcannons, you! All of your Potter-Malfoy children posts make me grin to no end. Which is the next oldest? I want to know about them (cause things have been going in chronological order so far I think). Also I noticed some shadowhunters stuff, are you watching the tv show? just curious. thanks for making me smile❤️
Hello! Thank you so much for your letting me know that you love my art, it really inspires me to keep drawing!
The children by age:
Teddy (April 15th, 1998)
Anita + Lyra (December 26th, 2001)
Edasich (March 30th, 2002)
Alexander (January 1st, 2004)
Cassiopea  “Sirius” (April 12th, 2004)
Eltanin (March 2nd, 2006)
Alsafi (October 31st, 2006)
Marius (November 6th, 2007)
Aldibah (June 1st, 2009)
Thuban + Rabastan (February 16th, 2010)
Kuma (September 2nd, 2011)
The children by what point Harry + Draco have/acquired them:
Anita  + Lyra (December 2001)
Teddy (March 2005)
Cassiopea “Sirius” (February 2005)
Eltanin (May 2006)
Alsafi (Oct 2006)
Edasich (Dec 2007)
Alexander + Marius (Nov 2007)
Aldibah (June 2009)
Thuban + Rabastan (Feb 2010)
Kuma (Jan 2011)
I’m releasing the children closer to their have/acquired date than birth date. So, after Eltanin, Alsafi is the next oldest. But the next aquired children are Alexander and Marius,  who’re up next.
(also, side note, if anyone is really good at math, could someone let me know when each child would start and graduate from Hogwarts, given that the cut off date for each year is August 30th? I would feel forever grateful.)
Now onto your other question, my fanart is not show fanart, I like to think of the book and the show as completely different entities. I’m less than fond of the show, mostly because I am a long standing fan of the books. I read City of Bones in fourth grade and I fell in love. I’ve read every book since and go to every tour Cassandra Clare has. I’m not a public anti-show person though. I’m not about telling people what/what not to enjoy. As long as the shows not in my face, I’m fine.c:
Now your obligatory hp hug gif for your nice words:

We give you the overview
For a few years now, Disney has discovered it lucrative for itself to reissue its well-known and popular animated films for the cinema – as remakes in the guise of
Real films.
These live action adaptations more or less faithfully emulate familiar fabrics. So that you keep the overview, we have listed here which ones Disney live action remakes have already been shot and which are yet to come.
What is meant here are films for which a Disney cartoon exists as a template (overall there are, after all 46 Disney cartoons) and which Disney has staged or wants to implement as a studio itself, this time as a live action variant or photo-realistic animated film. We regularly update our overview here.
Here we summarize for our
List of all Disney Live Action remakes
the term of the remake here, however, a little further than usual to also cover those films that “only” inspired the real new editions as animated films.
