This is unrelated to UMPIG, but uhhhh here's a quick thing I slapped together in like a minute to test a concept I have for an "alternate ammunition" mod", namely drunk rockets! Zscript thing below not that it's particularly interesting since it's just a three lines of code that are just the default Doom rocket spawn code with A_Weave added.

Fun fact: two of the biggest source ports for the classic ID Software games Doom and Quake were developed by trans women. Darkplaces for Quake by Ashley "Ladyhavoc" Hale and Zdoom by Marisa Heit.
To explain: The source code for most of ID Software's old games and engines including the Doom and Quake games are open source, which means that fans can use it to create ports for these old games that run natively on modern systems, including both Windows and native Linux support and enhancements that take advantage of modern hardware. They also enable you to run modern mods and level packs, like the memetic Darkplaces.wad that uses a derivative of Zdoom. Pretty nifty if you want some 90s shooter action. And you can thank trans women programmers when you do.

What if the Deadliest Demolition doom mod had a sequel, with even more explosions? It might have a title pic that looks like this.

I just realised that the GZDoom logo is the same as the ZDoom logo but with the side part mirrored, so that it's a D on the ZDoom logo and a G on the GZDoom logo.

DOOM - Putrefier
I'll put my hand up and say that for the longest time I didn't know who Ed Cripps was in the DOOM community. Is he a big deal? Is he not? I had no idea when I responded to this 'Ed' (That's the entire username, just the 'E' and the 'd' like that) making the call on DOOMworld's forums to write music for someone's WAD. "Fancy writing for an entire episode?" I joked. He did. The soundtrack to my (as yet) best DOOM work, The Becoming, was his.
And then, I noticed his name upon a replay of the first episode of 'Back to Saturn X' and had a very special WTF moment. Oh, huh, okay, he's really something. And he wrote the music for this relative nobody's DOOM shenanigans. His BtSX map, by the way, has teeth. It's great.
Upon taking a cursory look at his back catalogue, it appears he makes DOOM maps infrequently (ah, a fellow part-time dabbler, then) and I'd actually played one of his earlier efforts, Sin City, way back in 2001. I remembered him working on something afterwards that looked sorta Quake II-ish, what was it called? Hmmmm...
A single-map effort named Putrefier.
Holy fuck does it look like Quake II. No bad thing in my eyes, until the recent remaster making so many gamers 180 on the negative opinion they'd borrowed wholesale from some YouTuber, I was such a Quake II apologist for anyone who'd listen. Well, I had me a free evening tonight, so playing something a bit like that seemed to be the thing to do.
Gameplay-wise, it's surprisingly arcadey in terms of combat. Flip a switch to access the next area, the local corridors fill with monsters. It's weighted such that you wouldn't run out of fingers counting the incidental encounters by hand. Switch, fight, switch, fight. That is, if I discount the wandering between said switches.
And there's a lot, and it's not exactly well-signposted save for one in particular with a video screen showing an affected area so nondescript and immemorable it may as well not show me at all. Of my half-hour play time, I think possibly as much as half of it was wandering. Not that I minded entirely, because a reminder of that central-ish outdoor vista was always welcome. A level that looks this good, part of the enjoyment comes from looking at it. It's almost Metroid-esque in terms of soaking up the atmosphere and general ambience whilst clumsily re-exploring the facility to see which of several hitherto-block routes of access the latest switch opened up.
If I'm making this sound terrible, it's not. I had a great time here, interspersed with moments of calm which looked good, for 'okay' times. There's nothing bad here, except maybe the apparent HP of the new boss encounter deep in the fleshy annals of the base. Autoaim failed me, I had to resort to mouselooking in order to snipe its weak spot. Naughty.
But yeah, this is good stuff. I'd play it again. I'd play more of it, but I doubt there'll ever be more from this 'Ed' character; I gather he's knee-deep in writing industrial music with his wife these days. I've heard some, it's also great. A man of many talents, then.
