To all who receive this, I'm sorry. When I began investigations with the Drifter and our late friend Eris Morn, I had no way of knowing it would end like this. Oryx returned in some regard. The Dreadnaught, breathing again. The Deep- or rather what lurks inside it- reaching out and speaking in ink and tar. Perhaps intentionally setting foot into that echo chamber is a poor choice, but sometimes such things are necessary. I suppose doing something reckless for the sake of research is one of the most cliché things a warlock can do, but I digress. This letter is not to be a long-winded explanation of the why's and how's of what I'm doing. This is to prepare for the potential fallout of this decision of mine.

To my friends in green and gold, respectively. Shin and Germaine. You've had your differences in the past, but you two better than any I know are aware of the risk, and are willing to do what is necessary. If it comes to, gather a team and do not hesitate. I would return to the Light at the hands of none other than one of you two.

To Deputy Commander Sloan and Ahsa: I thank you for your guidance. If I return, it will be by your teachings. If I do not, know that it is in no way a failure on your part. It is by you that I have walked this path as far as I have. Thank you for that.

To the Vanguard, there is much to say and few words to say it in. We've had our differences, but I am proud to have fought at your side over these past years. Commander Zavala: your ability to stand tall in the face of everything thrown our way has been an inspiration. Rest easy. Ikora: despite our past arguments, I am proud to have called you a mentor. There was much I could not have made it past without your guidance. Crow: You have far, far exceeded my expectations over the years. Do not forget your past, but rise above it knowing that you have become so much more.

To Saint-14 and Osiris, two of the greatest men I have ever known. Now more than ever, I hope that you find your peace. I have learned as much from you both as Saint claims to have learned from me. Live beyond what you mean to others, and live for each other. You have found a finer thing than any amount of silver or glimmer. I know few others who can treasure it like the pair of you.

To Lord Shaxx and Valus Forge. I'm sure you both hate to see one another mentioned in the same sentence, so I hope this letter reaches you both with leagues between you two. If it doesn't, please do not tear the Tower apart arguing, but know that I hold you both in equally high regards. While Ikora taught me what I know about the light, you two taught me what it means to be a guardian. Even when I strayed to uncharted territory, your teachings kept me from following the unworn path into corruption. If I do return free of black fire, it will be in part by the memory of what I learned from you just as much as the resolve learned from Deputy Commander Sloan.

To Banshee-44, Ana, and Elsie (and Archie), I cannot imagine my journey without any of you. You are all a credit to the Tower any guardian would be proud to call friend.

To Failsafe, I cannot thank you enough for what you've done for us. I know you said that wanting to help is part of your programming, but in my opinion you have gone above and beyond. I cannot thank you enough for keeping an eye on the little rabbit while I have been unavailable. I don't think it would've bounced back like it has without you.

To Empress Caiatl and Misraakskell, I (and many others) value our alliance far more than words can express. There are few leaders I would bend a knee for, and I would do so for you both with pride. And to Eido, Variks, and Nimbus, your aid and council is just as valued. I know we Guardians can be a difficult lot to handle, and you five have all done so with a level of skill I can only hope to emulate.

To Luzaku and Fynch, my words are simple. You are brave to stand against not just your brood but your entire species. Walk in the Sky.

To RZ-3 and Gerda-3, I have known you for a short period, but I appreciate your presence all the same. These past weeks have been difficult, and even if it can be difficult for me to fully express, I truly did enjoy those times spent in your company.

To Elyan, you are braver than you know. I know how tempting it can be to walk dangerous paths when you're scared and confused, but I trust that you have the strength to remain on the straight and narrow. Your journey is just beginning. Listen to Crow and keep working with Sloan. It's hard, I know, but you'll get there.

And finally, to my candle in the dark. Ellis. When we first met, it was in a time where I was struggling to find a reason to continue fighting. And like a lighthouse in a storm, I found you. If the worst happens, I regret only breaking the promise I made to you. You reminded me of how important it is to be with others, and as I walk into the dark alone, my last thoughts will be of you.

hello!  because  our  game  will  have  a  limited  cast,  the  main  deciding  factor  we'll  consider  while  reviewing  apps  is  the  potential  team  dynamics  that  might  develop.  a  group  rp  is  only  as  strong  as  the group,  after  all,  so  we  will  be  considering  how  well  the  apped  characters  will  fit  among  our  other  roles  while  reviewing  bios,  muse  personalities,  and  wanted  connections. secondly,  we  look  at  how  the SCP lore is  incorporated into  backstories  as  well  as  what  applicants  envision  for their  muse's  future  plots.  while  we  don't  expect  applicants  to  know  everything  about  the  lore  (and  we'll  help  out  players  iron  out  any  kinks  if  they  are  accepted),  we'll  probably  be  leaning  towards  apps  that  have  a  clearer  direction  in  terms  of  a  more  general  character  arc. and  lastly,  we  want  to  see  how  excited  people  are  to  play  in  the  verse  and  have  fun  with  their  muse!  like  yeah,  we're  going  to  delve  deep  into  concepts  of  justice  and  systemic  inequality  that  affects  the  execution  of  said  justice  alongside  dealing  with  paranormal  eldritch  beings  and  the  eeriness  of  mundane  horrors,  but  also,  are  people  ready  to  let  loose  and  have  fun?  we're  putting  play  back  into  roleplay,  haha! we  hope  these  answers  encourage  you  to  apply  if  you  haven't  yet,  friend!  or  if  you  are  an  applicant  who  has  apped,  thank  you  very  much!  🥺💓

I don't want to sound rude, you may have already answered this question (if so, I'm sorry, I didn't find that answer), but I'm wondering why you're so against AI bots specificly. Obviously, this is a personal matter for everyone, but I'm a little confused by such harshness. Of course, I'm not going to prove anything to anyone, but I just wanted to understand the roots of your position. I really like your work, but to be honest, your last answers have thrown me into a kind of stupor :(

i have an ideological opposition against AI as a whole to be fair. a lot of it comes down to it's environmental impact

Globally, AI-related infrastructure may soon consume six times more water than Denmark, a country of 6 million, according to one estimate. That is a problem when a quarter of humanity already lacks access to clean water and sanitation.  

but i also believe it's inherently anti-human.

In a time when global literacy rates are diving (did you know that half of american adults read at a 6th grade level or below?) , I think it's incredibly short-sighted to be essentially surrendering your ability to write your own emails/essays/messages to an AI, when doing it yourself, despite what online contrarians will say, does have value (emails teach you how to communicate professionally, messages improve your social skills, essays improve your critical thinking skills). In this political landscape, it also feels dangerous to have your ability to read critically by yourself get dampened by AIs which are, at the end of the day, owned by silicon valley billionaires many of whom attended trump's inauguration, which is a good indication of where they lie politically.

Generative AI when it comes to art is also killing culture, removing opportunities for existing artists who are the ones who can extend the ceiling for human creation and helping society devalue art even more even though it's the only thing keeping us all sane. How would you feel if all you had in your life was just school or work, leaving out music, movies, tv shows, books, art? Doesn't art bring enough value to your life that it's worth properly compensating the people responsible for it? Why should we ever encourage or normalise throwing art into a meat grinder and feeding on the approximated soulless sludge it generates?

For AI chat bots, my beef with it is that it's an inherently anti-social product. All it does is remove the need to ever communicate with another person, which is horrible for people's brains. Some people are "falling in love" with their ai chatbot, some people are using their ai chatbots as therapists. The desire for real human connection is getting lost. An AI chatbot also makes RP obsolete, which is a foundational part of fandom which, i always feel like i need to remind people, is based on community. The point is to connect with people! I just fear that the popularisation and normalisation of this technology is going to end up with people shut in their homes their entire life, lost to whatever toxic pipeline their anti-social behaviour inevitably leads them down.

i know people love to play with AI like it's a fad, and it's "not that deep bro" but i think it's shameful and embarrassing to act as if you don't have agency in your life. You can choose to abstain from technology, you can choose to find entertainment elsewhere, you can choose to be a person independent of technology. If all AI went away tomorrow, would you be able to still do your job? Write a story? Read a book and understand its meaning? AI is a product built on instant gratification and entitlement - not to get too deep on an ask about AI chatbots, but i think art, relationships, culture, all of it is worth the journey to get there.

how c.ai works and why it's unethical

Okay, since the AI discourse is happening again, I want to make this very clear, because a few weeks ago I had to explain to a (well meaning) person in the community how AI works. I'm going to be addressing people who are maybe younger or aren't familiar with the latest type of "AI", not people who purposely devalue the work of creatives and/or are shills.

The name "Artificial Intelligence" is a bit misleading when it comes to things like AI chatbots. When you think of AI, you think of a robot, and you might think that by making a chatbot you're simply programming a robot to talk about something you want them to talk about, and it's similar to an rp partner. But with current technology, that's not how AI works. For a breakdown on how AI is programmed, CGP grey made a great video about this several years ago (he updated the title and thumbnail recently)

I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you watch this because CGP Grey is good at explaining, but the tl;dr for this post is this: bots are made with a metric shit-ton of data. In C.AI's case, the data is writing. Stolen writing, usually scraped fanfiction.

How do we know chatbots are stealing from fanfiction writers? It knows what omegaverse is [SOURCE] (it's a Wired article, put it in incognito mode if it won't let you read it), and when a Reddit user asked a chatbot to write a story about "Steve", it automatically wrote about characters named "Bucky" and "Tony" [SOURCE].

I also said this in the tags of a previous reblog, but when you're talking to C.AI bots, it's also taking your writing and using it in its algorithm: which seems fine until you realize 1. They're using your work uncredited 2. It's not staying private, they're using your work to make their service better, a service they're trying to make money off of.

"But Bucca," you might say. "Human writers work like that too. We read books and other fanfictions and that's how we come up with material for roleplay or fanfiction."

Well, what's the difference between plagiarism and original writing? The answer is that plagiarism is taking what someone else has made and simply editing it or mixing it up to look original. You didn't do any thinking yourself. C.AI doesn't "think" because it's not a brain, it takes all the fanfiction it was taught on, mixes it up with whatever topic you've given it, and generates a response like in old-timey mysteries where somebody cuts a bunch of letters out of magazines and pastes them together to write a letter.

(And might I remind you, people can't monetize their fanfiction the way C.AI is trying to monetize itself. Authors are very lax about fanfiction nowadays: we've come a long way since the Anne Rice days of terror. But this issue is cropping back up again with BookTok complaining that they can't pay someone else for bound copies of fanfiction. Don't do that either.)

Bottom line, here are the problems with using things like C.AI:

It is using material it doesn't have permission to use and doesn't credit anybody. Not only is it ethically wrong, but AI is already beginning to contend with copyright issues.

C.AI sucks at its job anyway. It's not good at basic story structure like building tension, and can't even remember things you've told it. I've also seen many instances of bots saying triggering or disgusting things that deeply upset the user. You don't get that with properly trigger tagged fanworks.

Your work and your time put into the app can be taken away from you at any moment and used to make money for someone else. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people who use AI panic about accidentally deleting a bot that they spent hours conversing with. Your time and effort is so much more stable and well-preserved if you wrote a fanfiction or roleplayed with someone and saved the chatlogs. The company that owns and runs C.AI can not only use whatever you've written as they see fit, they can take your shit away on a whim, either on purpose or by accident due to the nature of the Internet.

DON'T USE C.AI, OR AT THE VERY BARE MINIMUM DO NOT DO THE AI'S WORK FOR IT BY STEALING OTHER PEOPLES' WORK TO PUT INTO IT. Writing fanfiction is a communal labor of love. We share it with each other for free for the love of the original work and ideas we share. Not only can AI not replicate this, but it shouldn't.

Tubbo just did a Q&A for his newly announced Realm SMP!

Here are some key takeaways and highlights from it:

Tubbo emphasized that the "team" behind Realm is just himself and Tangofrags. It's a chill server so friends have a sandbox to tell stories, do lore, and have fun.

Tubbo: "I just wanna have fun with my friends, dude. I'm not trying to be the big 'bringing communities together guy'. I just wanna play with my friends. That's a lot of pressure." (57m 12s into stream)

These are the initial 25 players, but he plans to add more people in the future, and he already has 5 people in mind to add for the next event.

There is NO mod pack! Realm SMP is vanilla, it's just custom texture packs and plugins.

There are no set DND classes, but people can use their skill points to unlock certain things on skill trees and build their own classes. Realm SMP won't be 100% accurate to DND.

Tubbo hopes to have an event every week, but he reminds people to "manage their expectations" because he's only one guy – he can't do events like Purgatory because he doesn't have a massive team like Quackity had for that.

He has a 6 month timeframe in mind, but if the server fizzles out in a month, then it fizzles out in a month. Realm SMP will last as long as people play it!

There's no plans for an in-game translator because it's expensive and also Tubbo "doesn't want to step on Quackity's toes" :(

Lore is dependent on what the people on the server do, he likes more freestyle flowing RP.

There IS a life system! Players have 3 lives, but it's only "semi-hardcore" because other players can craft an item to bring people back at 1 life. When a player dies, their stats are set to 0 and they go into spectator-mode. When they're revived, they are brought back at 1 life with all their stats back.

The Nether IS enabled, but the End isn't enabled yet because Tubbo wants to make a cool custom boss fight.

There's no big team behind the server, it's just Tubbo and Tango helping him with some things he might not understand (however, he has a team he wants to use for the New Year Event he has in mind). He may look into getting some admins to help enforce rules.

Tubbo says he's happy to do anything himself, but if people really want to be an admin, it'd be voluntary like a Twitch mod kind of deal. (He already has a team of people he goes to for admin stuff, it wouldn't be random people being admins). However, he says if his merch does well, maybe he can get 1 or 2 people to help.

Tubbo says he's been overwhelmed by the amount of support it's received so far, but he's a bit nervous too.

He says the Realm SMP concept came to him in a dream.

Realm SMP will have proximity chat.

Events won’t be all PVP-based because he wants people to enjoy the events even if they aren’t a huge Minecraft player.

The only two banned items are mending books and elytra, which will be tied to future events (elytra can be won in one event).

An hour before the server launches on December 5, he'll be showing off more features.
