I've fallen into Fandom Hell for @gonzague-if that I've been considering a Vampire au and even created some art for it depicting a vampire version of my Prince Médée and her devoted Peyrolles inspired by the Renfield movie poster.
Ironically enough, in the vampire au, I could see Médée and Peyrolles' relationship starting out similar to Dracula and Renfield's. Mysterious and secluded noble needs a useful human to help with their business during the daylight hours, in return for shelter, fortune, and immortality. Although Médée probably isn't as horrible as a Master/Mistress as Dracula was 🤔
Sure, it was probably an adjustment at first for Peyrolles and terrifying, depending on how much they believe certain superstitions about vampires. The cross thing isn't true, though, and Médée laughs when Peyrolles first brings it up. She can stand on cosicrated ground just fine. Hell, in the 15th century, she tried to avoid an unwanted marriage by joining a convent. Sadly, it didn't work out, though her father's men found her and dragged her kicking and screaming to the alter. Thankfully, she didn't have to deal with the marriage long. A vampire was posing as one of the wedding guests and decided to gift the reluctant young bride with immortality.
A couple of centuries later, she winds up in Paris and meets Peyrolles one night, and offers them a job. At first, their dynamic probably is very similar to in game, Peyrolles helping Médée run errands during the day, dressing her since she can't see her own reflection in the mirror, covering up suspicions deaths, ect.
Médée sometimes needs to feed from Peyrolles if another source of blood isn't available. Which is an interesting scenario to imagine the first time she asks to feed from them. Sure Médée is usually careful not to kill the people she drinks from, but blood loss is still pretty risky. She depends on Peyrolles for so much already that she wouldn't want to compromise their health, but it could be more dangerous if she goes too long without eating. Médée probably doesn't even get a chance to finish asking Peyrolles before they're already removing their cravat and jacket.
What a tall, beautiful woman dressed in a 3 piece suit that pays well and asks to bite you occasionally. You expect them to say no to that?!

Part 2
Went to the beach recently and wondered, did our beloved Ren-ren ever get to go? Probably not, right? If he's from London(?) and not of great means, and Drac definitely wouldn't be into sunny beaches.

Once again, to celebrate this awesome day, I thought I'd give another shout-out to some more of those wonderful ladies that I alove and admire, both those who hve inspired me for a while now, and those that I just recently discovered ...
Tumblr media
IMAN VELLANI. Oh my sweet girl! :3 Exploding onto the scene thanks to the recent acclaimed hit/fan favourite that was the Disney/Marvel Ms. Marvel streaming show, the most adorable geek girl in ALL THE WORLD really got a major, much deserved profile boost (regardless of the problems) thanks to her co-starring return to the role of super-popular young Marvel superhero Kamala Khan in The Marvels. She's a genuine absolute SWEETHEART and she deserves all the success that's surely coming to her.
Tumblr media
GIDEON NAV & HARROWHARK NONAGESIMUS. Yup, I have FINALLY gotten round to reading Tamsyn Muir's ridiculously popular sci-fi fntasy novel series The Locked Tomb! It's still early days, I'm only on Gideon the Ninth, but I am ALREADY falling head over heels in love with the story's central duo, the reluctant warrior Gideon, a snarky oversized golden retriever of a woman, and her "hated" charge, Harrow, the scheming, overly-ambitious scion to an ancient clan of intergalactic necromancers, who's a metaphorical vicious little soaked ferret. I love them, they're so adorably dysfunctional ...
Tumblr media
AWKWAFINA. For me, one of the funniest people around, this musician, comedian and actress deserves every ounce of success she's earned for herself. I mostly know her for her acting, having been a fan ever since she was in Ocean's 8, since showing up in a raft of great roles in the likes of Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings, Raya & the Last Dragon, Crazy Rich Asians and Swan Song, although she's REALLY hitting her stride now, showing up in REALLY BIG stuff like Renfield, Quiz L\ady and, now, the incoming (and long-awaited) Kung Fu Panda 4.
Tumblr media
TATIANA SUAREZ. Perhaps the most incredible sportswoman I have come across in a good long while, this one is a TRUE INSPIRATION REVELATION. A strong up-and-coming contender for UFC World Champion, she's been through SO MUCH in her life to get where she is now, having had her teenage dreams of being an Olympic Gold Medal wrestler dashed after an accident during training led to the discovery of a burgeoning case of thyroid cancer. Fighting off the condition, she then fought her way back after embracing judo and then mixed martial arts, before AGAIN suffering a debilitating neck injury which NEARLY ended her sporting career again, forcing her to take another long-term hiatus to get back into fighting shape ... just as COVID hit. Now she's back again, fighting fit and better than ever, hungry for that next chance and looking like she's definitely gonna get it this time ...
Tumblr media
SINEAD O'CONNOR. The last 13 months have been really tough, we've had to say goodbye to some truly wonderful people, but one in particular REALLY HURT. The music industry lost a true GEM with the passing of this genuine GODDESS, the Irish singer-songwriter best known for her INSANELY popular cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U, although those in the know recognise that she was ONE HELL of a force nature in her own right, courting controversy throughout her career for her outspoken religious and political views. She NEVER backed down on what she believed, and earned my undying respect and admiration for it.
Tumblr media
FLORENCE PUGH. A completely amazing young actress who's had a trily ASTOUNDING rise to fame in recent years, I've be a fan of Flo's ever since she broke out in a MASSIVE WAY in the twisted psychological drama Lady Macbeth. She's blown us all away since, lighting up the screen in the likes of midsommar, Don't Worry Darling, Oppenheimer and, now, Dune, Part Two, but now, for me she will ALWAYS be Yelena Belova, the true successor to the MCU's Black Widow mantle.
Tumblr media
MIZU. One of my favourite female characters of the past year (although I'm sure she would balk at actually bringing up her gender), the titular lead protagonist of Netflix' wild runaway success new animated series Blue Eye Samurai is a genuinely fascinating and intoxivating character, who prompts profound debate about gender roles and personal identity while kicking arse in SPECTACULAR FASHION indeed in feudal Japan.
Tumblr media
TEYONAH PARRIS. Definitely one of THE MOST AMAZING African American actresses coming up right now, this young lady is definitely earning her breakout star status. Having come up through sterling turns in the likes of Dear White People, Chi-Raq, If Beale Street Could Talk and Candyman, before finally making good on all that promise with high profile lead turns in THey Cloned Tyrone and her ongoing role as MCU superhero MOnica Rambeau/Photon in Wandavision and The Marvels.
Tumblr media
BILLIE EILISH. What do I REALLY need to say about one of the most popular and astoundingly unique musical artists of the moment? Ever since her breakthrough at just THIRTEEN YEARS OLD with her wildly successful first single, Ocean Eyes, which became a massive runaway smash on Youtube, this incredibly talented young singer songwriter has consistently impressed with ever release, entirely deserving her immense success with an amazing debut EP and two subsequently BRILLIANT albums. She keeps going from strength to strength, and at just 22 years old is only just BEGINNING what's sure to be a MONSTER of a career ...
Tumblr media
KITTY O'NEIL. A true legend in cinema, even though most of us have NEVER actually seen her face, this little lady was one of the GREATEST stuntwomen and racers of all time, and a MASSIVE inspiration throughout her life as well. Despite going deaf due to illness during childhood, Kitty still went on to become a record-breaking racing driver and professional stunt performer, probably best known for having doubled Linda Cart in Wonder Woman and Lyndsey Wagner in The Bionic Woman. It's a genuine mystery why Hollywood hasn't made a biopic about her yet ...
Tumblr media
HOLGA KILGORE. Probably my ABSOLUTE favourite fictional female protagonist of 2023, the badass barbarian lady from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was a pure, unapologetic JOY, thanks in no small part to a wonderfully game turn from Michelle Rodriguez. Holga's just an absolute sweetheart, fully capable of decimating a whole room full of big, dangerous men with her bare hands without ever losing her gentle kindness, simple, honest innocence and unswerving loyalty. TRULY the MVP warrior tank any adventuring party wants in their corner ...
Tumblr media
SIOUXSIE SIOUX. Truly one of alternative rock's true, all time GOATs, the lead singer of one of goth's greatest and most important bands, Siouxsie & the Banshees, is a singular master of haunting, ethereal vocals and a genuine style ICON who lent her look and manner to a whole GENERATION of scary young women ...
Tumblr media
SABINE WREN & SHIN HATI. While my favourite Star Wars offering of 2023, the opening season of the Ahsoka series, was, all round, just SO GREAT for me, there was one particular element that just stuck with me above ANYTHING ELSE - the season-long rivalry between Ahsoka's troubled Mndalorian apprentice Sabine and Dark Jedi student Shin. They raged, continuously tried to kill each other and endlessly traded smouldering looks of hate that bordered on OBSESSION ... all while genuinely SIMMERING with barely restrained sexual tension. They made the whole fandom FERAL, myself includced. #wolfwren indeed ...
Tumblr media
BRODY DALLE. And last, but BY NO MEANS LEAST, a little more personal self-indulgience ith one of my greatest rock-fan super crushes, namely the awesome Aussie lead singer/guitarist of supercool punk bands the Distillers and Spinnerette. Still rocking her iconic status to this day, she remains a genuine inspiration ...

Was doing some research and discovered there have actually been several ballet adaptions of Dracula:
Michael Pink's Dracula - this version was developed in 1997 for the book's centennial, and also happens to be the version I'm familiar with (it's great 🦇). Follows a streamlined version of the book plot, Quincey is there, Seward gets combined with Van Helsing. There's a cool bit of choreography in the middle where Dracula goes upside-down climbing some scaffolding.
Tumblr media
Krzysztof Pastor's Dracula - based off of Coppola's film Bram Stoker's Dracula (which greatly deviates from the book plot). Mina is a reincarnation (?) of Dracula's long-lost wife from before he became a vampire. Has won multiple performing arts awards.
Tumblr media
Ben Stevenson’s Dracula - Set entirely in Transylvania in the 1800s (although Renfield is still there). Vampire brides fly around the stage, and Dracula gets sone epic bat wings.
Tumblr media
Gary Taylor's Dracula - like Pastor's version, this is a Dracula/Mina love story from Dracula's POV.
Tumblr media
David Nixon's Dracula (Northern Ballet) - Sexy Dracula TM. Opens with Dracula emerging nude from his coffin. Also features the blood transfusion and a Seward & Renfield number.
Tumblr media
Lynne Taylor-Corbett’s Dracula - Inspired by the 1931 Bela Lugosi film, though costumes definitely taking their own route. Designed to accompany a ballet adaptation of The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe.
Tumblr media
William Starrett's Dracula: Ballet with a Bite - Execution style varies from year to year (at least one year took a modern dance approach), though the storyline remains consistent. Includes Lucy getting staked.
Tumblr media
Gonzalo Galguera's Dracula - another Sexy Dracula adaptation, although less Halloween-store-variety and more leather.
Tumblr media
Honorary mention: Dracula, Pages from a Virgin's Diary - a Dracula ballet in movie form, shot silent-film style. Switches the order of Lucy and Johnathan's encounters.
Tumblr media
If anyone knows of any additional versions out there, let me know and I'll add them to the list!

It only took me a month, but I finally finished my portrait of Renfield! (:
I haven't been able to draw as often as I'd like to, with school and work, but I have a new Curse of Strahd campaign to make art for, and my literature class is bound to give me some inspiration eventually. (: Sadly I had to rush this towards the end, and I think it shows, but I don't think this is the worst thing I've made, and now I have stuff to keep in mind for later pieces.
Critique is always welcome!

Have you seen the new Renfield movie? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
I saw it last week, and I enjoyed it a fair bit. I did not go in expecting a great deal from it in terms of its faithfulness to the original text or its value as high art (I was very much interested in it for Cagecula, who delivered, in my opinion). It was a fun time for somebody who has generally eased up a lot about the goofy potentialities of Dracula adjacent media over the years and who is not averse to gratuitous gore.
[Spoilers and Some Criticisms Beneath the Cut]
In terms of its flaws, I do feel the plot with the Lobos family took up more of the narrative than it needed to and that there was probably some space that could have been freed up for more Renfield and Dracula dynamics, which is what people are doubtlessly coming to the film for (there also weren't any Larry Talbot easter eggs with them that I caught, which I feel was a lost opportunity!). While I was less averse to the Awkwafina plot than I initially thought I'd be, I also wasn't a big fan of what I felt to be a tease at a romance with her and the additional assignment of a wife and child to Renfield, as I'm not really on board with framing a guy's escape from his abusive/obsessive relationship with a man in opposition to his pure/inspiring relationships with women. I also found that some of the over the top goofiness got a little too goofy for me. I do enjoy gore, but it got a little repetitive/cartoony, and the cocaine circle honestly fell a little flat for me, even as much as I appreciate the shout out to the unsearchable depths of Wiccan tumblr. Although these are very much YMMV points.
That all being said, Cagecula gave me the gaslighting, hybrid-Dracula portrayal experience I wanted (as well as having some absolutely killer outfits), I adored all the little references to prior iterations of the story, I very much enjoyed the goofy montage showing Renfield's apartment and sweater obtaining, and the Dracula Blood ex Machina with the support group was satisfying for a film that didn't demand to be taken too seriously.

Hello! I didn’t even realize the sensual vampire art was from Renfield, lol. You have inspired me to push that movie to the top of my to-watch list this weekend. I love WWDITS and have been hedging on this for MONTHS. I will watch it, now.
Hey, I like WWDITS, too! But it is actually the 2014 movie version that I watched and appreciate very much. The WWDITS lore is incredibly well written and witty (after all, it's a mock-documentary), and could supplement some lacking lore-aspects of Renfield. I really really don't mind them existing in the same universe hehe.
I am so glad that you like the sensual aspects of my vampire arts and find them inspiring. Admittedly, I am far less edgy, less intense than other artists in the whole vampire universe. Yes, you definitely should check out Renfield, the vampire and his little slave have unique chemistry both on their own and together, I think it is a treat!

This was an inspired choice of actor to play Dracula.
After 700 years of one-bite stands Count Dracula (George Hamilton) is ready to settle down. Convinced top fashion model Cindy Sondheim (Susan Saint James) is the donor of his dreams, he sets out for the Big Apple to win her heart - and blood - with his devoted servant Renfield (Arte Johnson).
The Count finds excitement in Manhattan’s nightlife. When he meets the sexy but wacky Cindy in a hip discotheque, he charms the pants off her...Little does she know she’s just three hickies away from ghoulish wedlock.
Love at First Bite, 1979

Digital art has been super boring lately but here’s a peek of a vtube model I’m attempting to make of my sona(?) that’s loosely inspired by R. M. Renfield from Dracula, I say loosely bc I’ve literally never watched or read Dracula lol
Just my monthly vampire reference on this account since “Ivory” (my alias) is a vampire
Hopefully I finish it 😭

Friend NutshellGulag sets up a discord server for horror movies on Halloween and I try to catch some of them. This usually increases awareness of contemporary movies significantly. This year I watched:
HOUSE OF WAX (1953)
I had to leave partway through to take Tir to the vet so this is a movie about a passionate artist who finds a way to continue his art after being disabled by a tragic accident. Inspiring!
HOUSE OF WAX (2005)
I missed the first part of this because of the above-mentioned Tir at the vet. It seems to be a very confusing movie about torturing young WB/UPN/CW stars. Jared Padalecki is here with unfortunate facial hair and gets a chunk of his face peeled off like an orange.
The literal melting house of wax in the climactic scene would make a very good set piece in a videogame.
The wax figures look much worse than Vincent Price's, so I do not look forward to a youtube video essay dork redeeming this film in a few more years because it's actually a meta-commentary on how the quality of art has fallen in correlation to the development of our technology.
DRACULA (1931)
A Reader's Digest version of the novel, there's a reason Lugosi's Dracula became iconic. When Lugosi isn't on screen, everything slows to a crawl, except for when Dwight Frye's amazing Renfield is there, contorting himself with wide-eyed, fragile madness.
Lugosi was 49 at the time and very striking.
BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA (1992)
Incredibly faithful to the source material except when it wildly isn't. Visually distinct and kind of overwhelming. Very horny. The cowboy is there. Gary Oldman's Dracula when he's being a Victorian gentleman seems likely to have inspired something of the character design of the Count in GANKUTSUOU.
Then it was time for Anime Girls' Night and it had been decided I would experience LOST BOYS (1987).
I do not think the '80s and I are meant to be together, movie-wise.
I liked the dog.
Shirley's boy had more lines than he did in MGSV.
If the movie had been made a decade later the Frog brothers would be school shooters.
Why was there a prop child vampire in a confederate soldier jacket?
I liked the bit with Grandpa putting upsetting taxidermied animals in Younger Brother's room.
I also liked the bit where I decided the vampires were all worshiping an evil carnivorous helicopter god.

DEAR FESTIVIDDER,
Welcome and thank you in advance!! As I say every year (or every-other-year when I partcipate) these are just some thoughts, but feel free to focus on different characters/storylines/etc. I'm excited to see anything you're inspired to make from the sources below!
I also tagged all the fandoms so you can see how often I reblog stuff about them, consider it a vidding vision board. :D
If you're checking out any of these sources for the first time, content warning for some blood/gore in Renfield (played for comedy) and blood, jumpscares, animal death in Midnight Mass.
Film (Safety)
Renfield (2023) - Listen. Cinema peaked when Robert Montague Renfield decorated his little apartment in bright '70s colors and kitty cat bedsheets to Lizzo, and then peaked a second time when Ben Schwartz snorted a centipede. This movie is bloody camp nonsense but somehow also an earnest abuse recovery/revenge fantasy, and it gave me Emotions and a crush on Nicholas Hoult. His giant sad eyes and self-empowerment arc mean the world to me.
Television
Abbott Elementary - Wholesome sitcom in the vein of Parks & Rec following teachers in a Philadelphia elementary school (as a child of two public school teachers it hits close to my heart). I'd kinda like to see an Ava vid, she's so entertainingly terrible but then has great moments of growth as well. Or one centered on Janine, Janine/Gregory, or just any kind of fun ensemble thing!
The Afterparty - Murder mystery comedy with the twist that each episode, a character gives their version of events in the style of different genre parodies. Honestly I'd be fine with just a season 1 vid because I liked it more than season 2. (With the exception of S2 giving me the Sapphic Wes Anderson Movie of my dreams.) S1 had just about a perfect ensemble (Yasper being a highlight) and great execution of the Rashomon-style premise.
The Bear - Drama/dramedy set in the chaotic back-of-house world of a Chicago restaurant. I love how real the environment, relationships, and characters of this show feel. I adore Ayo Edebiri so I'd especially like a vid centered on Sydney, her ambitions and anxiety and passion, but again anything that inspires you about the show would make me happy! I love everyone in this dysfunctional restaurant fam. I don't really ship Syd with Carmy so I'd prefer not an explicitly romancey vid.
Midnight Mass - There's a venn diagram between Catholic Trauma and Vampires that Mike Flanagan seemed to crack like nobody else ever has lol. After Hill House (which I got an incredible vid for a couple years ago) this is my favorite of his horror-drama miniseries, I really love the mood and themes it explores about faith/religion a source of both comfort and harm. Pretty much a "do whatever you want with this source" request!
Web Series/Internet Content
Dimension 20 - There's a lot of source here and even I haven't made it through all the older intrepid heroes campaigns yet (not to mention all the side quests). I've basically seen everything from A Court of Fey and Flowers onward. Favorites include Neverafter, A Crown of Candy, and I'm really enjoying the current Burrow's End series. But honestly if there's any season or mini-season or general vibe YOU especially love and would like to focus on, feel free to do so! And if you want to incorporate stuff like art, minis, fan sources, or just rely on the player dynamics, go for it. I love basically everybody but special shout-out to Lou Wilson.
Amaury Guichon (the chocolate guy) (Youtube/Tiktok/he also had a Netflix show) - Guichon is a French-Swiss pastry chef known for making elaborate, edible chocolate sculptures, and posting usually wordless montage videos of his process. I'm just kinda curious what a Chocolate Guy vid would look like! Watching his videos and the work that goes into each piece is so fascinating, and he has a really charming and pleasant vibe. Love the technical skill, the commitment to the bit, and the fact they often look like they taste good on top of it!

Have you seen the stuff from DRCL? That's the Dracula manga adaptation where it all takes place at a boy's boarding school with Shin-ichi Sakamoto as the artist.
God reading the cast for the manga is such a journey.
"Boys' boarding school? You're really going to try to be MORE misogynist than Bram Stoker?"
"Oh good they kept Mina (the best character)"
"Lucy has some kind of... gender-fluid thing going on okay that's interesting..."
"Renfield has been gender-swapped to being a deranged nun--also a an interesting choice."
"Joe Suwa (John Seward) and Quincey Morris bully Mina---BOOO BOOOOOOOO SLANDER BOOOOOOOOO"
Wh-Where is Dracula. Is Lucy now Dracula.
AND THERE'S NO JONATHAN??? NO POOR MEOW MEOW???
Like I would say there's definitely inspirations from Dracula but it definitely strikes me as too many degrees removed to really be an adaptation of Dracula--like I do love the concept of Vampires as possessing both masculine and feminine power and that making them terrifying, but Quincey Morris being black and the worst bully smacks of classic manga racism to me.
Also like the art is gorgeous but I'm not really the biggest fan of mangas where a significant part of the plot is "This character is treated like shit and is miserable." Like I could never get into Hell Girl for that reason.
