Shortly after its inauguration, the Trump administration has made no secret that it isn't especially interested in funding research. Before January's end, major science agencies had instituted pauses on research funding, and grant funding has not been restored to previous levels since. Many individual grants have been targeted on ideological grounds, and agencies like the National Science Foundation are expected to see significant cuts. Since then, individual universities have been targeted, starting with an ongoing fight with Columbia University over $400 million in research funding.
This week, however, it appears that the targeting of university research has entered overdrive, with multiple announcements of funding freezes targeting several universities. Should these last for any considerable amount of time, they will likely cripple research at the targeted universities.
On Wednesday, Science learned that the National Institutes of Health has frozen all of its research funding to Columbia, despite the university agreeing to steps previously demanded by the administration and the resignation of its acting president. In 2024, Columbia had received nearly $700 million in grants from the NIH, with the money largely going to the university's prestigious medical and public health schools.
But the attack goes well beyond a single university. On Tuesday, the Trump administration announced a hold on all research funding to Northwestern University (nearly $800 million) and Cornell University ($1 billion). These involved money granted by multiple government agencies, including a significant amount from the Department of Defense in Cornell's case. Ostensibly, all of these actions were taken because of the university administrators' approach to protests about the conflict in Gaza, which the administration has characterized as allowing antisemitism.

The University of Silesia has once again awarded me a scholarship for a research trip. Firstly I traveled to Berlin and met amazing musicians such as Maciej Śledziecki, Marcin Pietruszewski and Francesco Corvi. On Rave Fm Youtube channel you can easily find vlogs and thoughts and insights on Algomystica and Aggregate Festival!!! Also some interviews about experimental electronic music will soon see the sunlight.
But this time, I will attend the International Conference on Live Coding 2025 in Barcelona ❤. I plan to actively engage with the discussions and insights shared at the conference, preparing myself to contribute as a speaker next year. The Recruitment Committee has granted me funding within the project "jUŚt transition – The Potential of the University of Silesia as the Foundation for a Just Transition of the Region." Thank you so much. Love my uni, and my supervisor Prof. Ania Malinowska ❤
So happy, and check International Conference on Live Coding and what they do!

Now this is the right way to get funding! I've always felt a bit scummy when writing grants and trying to frame my work in the most medically relevant way possible even when a good portion of what I've done in my career is basic science, but that's how the game is played. It never sat right with me. I'm much happier with how I get funding to do my work these days, but if I could go back, I might do things differently...
Funding proposal directed at new-age healers: I'm exploring receptors in the brain linked to neuroprotection and the preservation of cognition in aging brains...I mean, I'm searching for the origin of the chakra energy fields that emanate from the inner third eye of the human mindscape. I'll need $500,000 in drug discovery startup funding...I mean, I need this money to purchase the healing crystals needed to isolate the various auras that are obscuring the giga-brain boarder where the chakras entangle with the human all-soul.
3 years and half a dozen neuroscience papers later: Oops, just found a drug that will keep hippocampal neurons alive Alzheimer's patients but no sign of chakras yet, guess I'll keep trying once the next round of funding comes in.
There are many benefits to being a marine biologist

Mr. Julhas has successfully built an aircraft entirely through his own initiative and effort. While many people praise him for this achievement, but a certain group is consumed with jealousy. In Bangladesh, billions of takas are wasted in the name of research, and there is no transparency or accountability regarding how the allocated funds are spent. Mr. Julhas did not build his aircraft with their father's money, so why are they so bothered? There are many people of Mr. Julhas's age who:
🔴 Get addicted to drugs, 🔴 Join teenage gangs and create chaos, 🔴 Engage in theft and robbery, 🔴 Strap bombs to their chests and carry out suicide attacks, 🔴 Harass women and grope them in public transport, 🔴 Sell adulterated and unsafe products in markets.
He did none of these things. Yes, he might have gained some ideas from YouTube, but considering his financial struggles, limited education, and young age, the fact that he built an aircraft using a water pump and bicycle wheels, without access to a proper runway, and actually made it fly - he is undoubtedly courageous.
Many students pursue education with the mentality of "just admit into any subject, get the certificate, and that’s enough." Compared to them, individuals who pursue their interests and achieve something without institutional or governmental support should be identified and prioritized.
The administration of the 'Aviation and Aerospace University' of Lalmonirhat should offer him a scholarship, allowing him to continue his education. He should also receive a monthly stipend until he completes his studies.

REAL TALK: America's Faltering Steps in the Global Tech Race Is A Stark Contrast to China's Bold Leap Forward.
Want to know how much the United States is willing to compete (there’s no decoupling, mind you) with China for the world’s top slot? Simple. Follow the money. It ain’t even funny. Trust me. Two recent articles make this abundantly clear. A recent Science article, “Biden’s lean science budget could mean tough choices for agencies“, paints a somber picture of the United States’ commitment to…
