Hi Maddie! Are you willing to talk a little about your PhD journey? All I know is you write a really big paper but I imagine it involves more than that
absolutely! the requirements of a phd will definitely range depending on both your field and subject of your research, but typically involve taking courses that allow you to gain general but high level knowledge of the area on the whole, passing some type of qualifying exam that shows you’re prepared to complete your dissertation, and then writing the dissertation itself, all in a process that can take between typically three years (this seems very short but is fairly common outside of the USA) to a decade. in my program people typically graduated in five or six years; i myself took six years to finish everything up
for my program i took classes in a wide variety of areas, most of which were not directly related to what i wrote about for my dissertation, but all of which were extremely beneficial in 1) learning in areas outside of what i do, 2) helping me feel more prepared when teaching those subjects as part of my TA duties, and 3) allowing me to develop deeper critical and theoretical knowledge that helped me with writing the dissertation itself. i was also really happy that i was able to take classes outside of the theatre department (in the music and literature departments; though the lit class i took was a film class lol), which made total sense given my research is so interdisciplinary. the biggest thing i learned about my research throughout my time is that i very much live in the performance studies world (vs. theatre or drama) which is helpful framing given i write and teach about such a wide range of performance and media forms. my dissertation was much more a performance studies/musicology/american studies project than a Theatre™️ project, but i had a committee that really encouraged me to think across multiple disciplines with my work (and i also got to teach both theatre and film classes, which is pretty cool)
i also really appreciate that my program also gave us so much experience teaching! i taught every single quarter and many summers during grad school, which (while exhausting) not only gave me a ton of practice to build up my own pedagogical approach but made my CV pretty competitive as an early career scholar when applying to jobs. i don’t think i would have gotten multiple tenure-track interviews while still finishing my dissertation had i not had so much teaching experience (as instructor of record!) on there. i also am really grateful that my department also really cares about encouraging phds’ practice within and beyond the department, so i was able to dramaturg and/or direct ten shows within my department on top of a ton of outside gigs at the major LORT houses in town (which was also a really big deal)
the actual dissertation writing process sucks. it’s exhausting and thankless and even if you have a really amazing committee (like i did <3) it is extremely stressful and i do not know ANYONE who has reported a smooth and easy dissertation writing process LOL; however i had really good people on my side (friends, family, colleagues in the department and in arts and humanities in general at school, my faculty, my coworkers at the record shop, etc.) who were so supportive and my biggest champions as i was taking on this massive project. it was a lot but in all honestly even though it took so long, it was not the most difficult academic work i’ve ever had to do (that badge of dishonor goes to the horrendous process of getting my international baccalaureate diploma, which was so awful it led me to go to hippie college with no grades no tests and no majors LMFAO). i am super proud of my dissertation—if anyone wants to read it i’d be happy to send the link!—and even though there are plenty of sections i’ll rework for when i submit it to academic presses for publication, i am really pleased with the work i did and i think that it provides new and (imho) exciting scholarship about topics that i find really meaningful (many of which i’ve loved since i was a kid)
all of this to say, if people have phd, grad school, research, or otherwise related questions or want to chat, please hit me up! always happy to talk about this stuff / offer my very humble advice about any stage of the process <3

By Sheena Cruickshank
A couple of years ago I wrote an article in The Conversation about the quiet removal of the offer to vaccinate primary age children to protect them against COVID-19 in England. The decision was that any child who turned five after August 2022 would not be eligible to receive a COVID vaccine until they are 12, unless they are in a higher-risk group. Vaccines for children under the age of 4 (from the age of 6 months), whilst approved for use on the UK, are not, nor have been, provided. This is very different to other countries including the USA which do offer vaccines to children from 6 months of age. What I want to do this with article is talk through some recent studies on paediatric infection and consider the potential implications of that, if any, on vaccine policy.
Why are most children not offered COVID-19 vaccines in the UK?
The reason for this is the idea that COVID is a less serious infection in young children than it is in adult. Whilst this can be true for many children, some do experience worse infections and a recent paper has looked at data in the UK regarding hospitalisations for COVID-19 across age groups. I also encourage you to read Christina Pagel’s excellent substack summarising the findings here.
The research analysis summarised in Professor Pagel’s substack showed that over 40% of all admissions in children between 2020 and 23 (under the age of 18) were in infants under the age of 1.
Vaccines and pregnancy.
Young infants are exceptionally vulnerable to COVID 19. The reason for this is that infants’ immune systems are still developing which makes them particularly vulnerable to any infection including COVID-19. The good news is that babies can be protected from COVID-19 in the first six months of life if the mum has been recently vaccinated. This is because if the mum is vaccinated she can pass on protective antibodies to the developing baby whilst pregnant. These will wane over time but if the mum is then able to breastfeed she can then top up the baby’s antibodies further by passing on antibodies that are found in breast milk.
Covid vaccines in pregnancy are recommended in the UK. These vaccines are recommended as the severity of COVID-19 is higher in unvaccinated than vaccinated women. Although the risk in the post-omicron era is lower, there is still a greater risk to the mum and baby from COVID-19. However, takeup of COVID-19 vaccines has not been great in pregnant women. For example, a study showed that only 1 in 3 pregnant women would have the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy. Younger women and people from socially economically deprived backgrounds were least likely to be vaccinated. Much more targeted work must be done to work with pregnant women and explain why these vaccines are both safe and important. Dr Viki Male maintains an excellent and up-to-date list of research on vaccines and COVID-19 in pregnancy so do look at her google document if you have further questions.
What are the risks of COVID-19 for older children?
Whilst I would personally advocate that infants and children would benefit from the offer of a vaccine between 6 months to 4 years of age to help develop their immunity so their first encounter with COVID-19 is helped and shaped by vaccine induced immunity, its unlikely the policy in the UK will change.
The current rationale influencing UK policy is that most children will be exposed to infection via school or nursery and that the risks of severe impacts of COVID are low. This is because most children with COVID-19 remain asymptomatic or develop mild disease, often with upper respiratory symptoms. The proportion of children over the age of 1 who get severe disease is still rare. Of those children that do get severe disease, it has been suggested that many children who require hospitalised with Covid have underlying health conditions. This thinking then influences the policy decisions. However, in older children (over the age of 1) this is true for around half of all hospitalisations though so that reasoning doesn’t quite chime. However, it is true that overall deaths from COVID in children DO remain rare which is very good news. The green book (which publishes data and recommendations for vaccines) cites a 2022 study which showed an infection fatality ratio of less than 1 in 100,000 infections in 0-19 year-olds. The risk is therefore considered low and decision makers have been concerned this risk is outweighed by the possible risk of acute resolving myocarditis from the vaccine in adolescent boys.
However, infection is NOT risk-free and some children do develop Long Covid (symptoms that last more than 4 weeks). We still do not understand why this happens and how we can better identify children who are most at risk. This is important so we can establish who falls into the more vulnerable groups that are currently eligible for vaccines. A recent scoping review was published investigating Long Covid in 659,286 children and adolescents under the age 21. A scoping review looks at the published literature and tries to build a consensus of what the research is telling us. The incidence of Long Covid was really variable in children so we need to better understand the true incidence- one study for example suggested 3.7% children developed Long Covid symptoms. Surprisingly, 80% of the cases of long Covid started with a mild infection. This suggests that severity might not be the best indicator of vaccine eligibility and must be followed up. Symptoms very hugely variable but many children described how this affected their day- to day lives a lot (see below). This must be absolutely devastating and we must understand why some children get Long Covid symptoms.
Many of the children identified in the scoping study had pre-existing conditions including a spectrum of allergic conditions (asthma, allergy, allergic rhinitis) and/or obesity. These are not necessarily all groups considered at risk and eligible for childhood vaccines in the UK. Of these criteria, only children with severe asthma that is poorly controlled are currently eligible. This scoping study needs following up but, as vaccination reduces the likelihood of developing post-Covid complications, it could suggest we may need to revise eligibility for the vaccines in children to further reduce the risk of Long Covid in children.
Other risks of infection should be evaluated. A recent paper showed the growing incidence of juvenile type II diabetes within 6 months of the diagnosis of COVID 19 in children between 10 and 19 years of age. Studies like this show the need to continue to assess the impacts of the infection in the un-vaccinated.
It is vital that we understand the scale of the risks, and who are most at risk so that if can ensure that decisions regarding vaccinating children are made in the light of all the most up to date evidence. Much more work is needed too to enhance vaccine information, address vaccine hesitancy and take-up in pregnant women so that babies can be best protected from COVID-19.

It's not a "complex trauma disorder". It's a complex dissociative disorder commonly associated with trauma. Big difference.
If someone is having problems, they're going to seek out help for those problems. Doesn't matter if you think you're endogenic or traumagenic. Also, seeing your plurality as endogenic is NOT the same as thinking you have no trauma at all. The vast majority of endogenics have trauma, as most people in general do, and are very aware of their trauma history. There are even endogenic systems with professionally diagnosed DID who are in treatment for it.
So no, the idea of endogenic plurality is absolutely NOT "anti-recovery".
Also, it's not the fault of endogenics that some traumagenic people look at endogenics and feel invalid. Some trans people look at gnc cis people and feel invalid, is that the fault of the gnc people? Some athletes look at Olympic Games participants and feel invalid, is that the fault of the Olympians? Some infertile people who adopted their children look at families with kids they had themselves and feel invalid, you gonna hate on people with biological kids like that? Of course not. If other people existing makes you feel bad, that's not those other people's fault. Now if they go to you and say to your face that you're invalid, THAT'S harmful and entirely their fault.
Which is not something that the vast majority of endogenics are doing - but it IS something anti-endos do to traumagenics ALL THE TIME. "Oh, you support endogenics? You must be one of them, you faker." "Oh, your trauma was what I consider to be less valid? You're a faker." "Oh, you view some of your systemmates as having a spiritual origin? You're faking.”
Also, there's research and experts who say that the theory of structural dissociation of the personality doesn't dictate the only way plurality can form. This even includes the DSM-V-TR, which states specifically that DID "may or may not be preceded by exposure to a traumatic event." The ICD-11, used more broadly around the world than the DSM, including in the USA, says that if dissociative identities aren't causing distress or dysfunction, it's not DID or any other disorder, and uses spiritual plurality as one example of non-aversive plurality. The American Psychiatric Association published a book for healthcare providers that states that while plurality can be caused by trauma, that isn't an exclusive reason for it. And also that plurality is one part of DID and can exist outside of it. Two of the authors of the theory of structural dissociation said in a research paper that there can be dissociative identities like in DID for other reasons.
Meanwhile, there's literally not a single reputable source saying otherwise. Not one.

Hi! What’s a citizen scientist and how did you get involved with a group that does that? This is the first time I’ve heard of any of that and it sounds so cool
Hi there!
I'd say there's two answers to that, but I'll start with the more relevant kind. There's "layperson recruited by scientist to help with science work" and there's "amateur, self-taught scientist". The overlap is large, but the project I was talking about is one of the world's largest laypersons-scientists collaborative projects.
It's called iNaturalist (getting started page here).
They have a website, apps for iOS and Android, and several layers of help for the new or confused. (*their new app is available on iOS, you want iNat Next. I'm an android user tho). There may even be a dedicated localization team for your country, if you're outside the USA.
I've gladly sunk thousands of hours into iNaturalist between time in nature and time online.
iNaturalist's primary goal is to get people connected with nature, but the core loop for most people is like this:
take a photo (or other recording) of an organism - a bird, a plant, mold, etc. Ideally a wild one, not a pet or garden plant.
upload it to the app. it will have fields asking for additional info, but most of those should auto-fill from the photo metadata.
technically optional but PLEASE fill in "what do you think this is" / the Identification field. give it your best guess. the Computer Vision will give suggestions, or you can say, "I know this is a rose" or "I know this is a mouse".
wait a little. there are a dozen staff to millions of users. everyone else who ever helps you on iNat is an unpaid volunteer so be nice to them.
whoa! someone else has offered their own identification. If you're lucky, they even know what exact species you've found.
Once at least two people have given a specific ID, and over 2/3s of identifiers (including you) are in agreement, the observation has been given an official community ID. Now (given a few other qualifiers - eg is it wild, did you provide a date) your submission can be used for research!
within a few days, your new Research Grade observation will be uploaded to Serious Scientific Databases! Hundreds of papers cite iNaturalist data.
Now if you're freaky and/or already know a decent amount about organisms, you can also be an identifier! The app's interface for adding IDs to observations on mobile kind of stinks tbh. Maybe the new iOS app makes it good, but I haven't had the chance to try that. In any case, if you want to help be the person certifying observations, you'll be best off on the website.
So as an identifier the core loop is like this:
Open up a page of the dedicated Identify modal.
Add your filters: what species? where? when? Do you want to work with audio files, do you want to help a specific user? by oldest, by newest, random order? We have so many filters.
Open up those observations one at a time and give your best, informed guess as to the organism's identity. You might be the first identifier there, you might be double-checking someone else's hypothesis.
Use the 'more info' tabs, or the awesome built in keyboard shortcuts, to add more information, if you want. iNaturalist allows you to add phenology information or additional notes and tags.
You'll get notifications on observations you've added IDs to, to let you know if there are conflicting opinions or comments etc.
Yay! sweet karma! You've helped the scientific community!
If you're ME, there's an additional couple steps.
7. do all the above over 235,000 times
8. notifications hell, notifications unusable, notifications coming out of every orifice. additional notification filtering update when (three years and counting)
please ask me more questions. pls. pls I want to share more. I didn't touch the social aspect and I didn't get into using iNat to learn and I

Transformers: Multiverse #1 - "Cy-Gon"
Originally posted on September 15th, 2012

wada sez: Did you think I was done? My torments never end: I’m doing all of Transformers: Multiverse too! A direct continuation of Mosaic spearheaded by a few contributors, Multiverse is literally just more of the same. Indeed, this first strip was originally created for publication as a Mosaic; you can see the version with the original branding below. Right off the bat, we’re hit with a blisteringly collar-tugging story which appropriates a brief one-panel cameo in Last Stand of the Wreckers of Marvel UK character Flame during the Aequitas trials to provide thinly-veiled allegory on the Vietnam War. The title of this strip, a location invented for this story, is a bastardised reference to Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. Look, I’ll admit that I know next to nothing about the Vietnam War, so I’ll leave justifying this strip to the original author, Rob Queen, who posted a lengthy commentary on deviantART explaining the inspiration, which I’ve now mirrored below. Queen implies he asked Nick Roche to draw this strip for him, but was turned down. Notice the cameos for Vector Prime and Alpha Trion on the board! Multiverse mastermind Brandy Dixon did her own take on the colors for this strip, which you can find below.
You have no idea how much i means to me to get this up. A couple years ago, a friend of mine needed some research help for a paper she was doing on the Vietnam War. As I was doing my research, I stumbled upon something interesting.
Ngo Dinh Diem was supposed to be a puppet. His charge was to rally the people of Vietnam to Democracy. Situated in the Democratic capital of Saigon, he quickly proved to not only be unmanageable but ruthless, uncompromising, and bloody. It was not long before he was put into power that his masters, the USA, realized that they may not have found the best individual for the role. Too late to save the cause, President Kennedy had Ngo Dinh Diem assassinated. Some feel that it was the President's inability to establish a worthwhile (read: successful) war regime that led to his own assassination shortly following Ngo Dinh Diem's.
After I slowly reread the bludgeoningly amazing work called "Last Stand of the Wreckers," I saw the single panel of Flame. In Aequitas. Standing trial for his atrocities. "How could this possibly have gone down?" I asked.
And then I knew.
He was a puppet that cut off the hand up his ass.
But unlike Ngo Dinh Diem, Flame was a tragedy because he was too loyal to the cause.
When Nick Roche said that he couldn't do this, I started a search to bring this image to life. When I saw Paul Vromen's art, I knew only he could do so the way I wanted it. The care, attention, and detail he put in continues to blow me away. I love how evil Xaaron looks in Panel 7. I love the subtleties of his work. I love how uncompromising Flame is, how stoic Prowl manages to be. The angles... everything.
Paul's frequent collaborator of hue is Mr. Zubia, who has impressed me as a wonderful talent that I will eagerly approach for more pretty colors in the future.
Apologies, on the other hand, go out to the enigmatic HdE. There was simply too much that I wanted to put in here. Too many words. Too many details. Too many words on the screens behind Flame. I am eternally grateful for his editing judgement, his guidance, and little lessons like "Less words! Less words!" (paraphrased, of course).
In spite of how much I love this, it's not done. I can't help but feel that this one panel can only scratch the surface of the story I want to tell. I would love to make this a real story. By real story, I mean 6 issues. Published by the Idea and Design Works. Anyone think a petition could get Mr. Barber's attention?
Finally, a last apology. I apologize to everyone - American, Cambodian, Thai, Vietnamese, etc. - who was involved with the American Vietnamese War. This includes families, survivors, and all who did not receive a hero's welcome. Not only was the war a failure, but if we look at Vietnam now, we will see that the USA did, in fact, win. It just a lot longer than anyone expected. We won through a means that bloodshed could never have: through diplomacy, success, and a few well-placed products. On behalf of everyone who was forced by fear into that terrible disaster - and unlike the puppet-master Emirate Xaaron - I am sorry.

So I need help with breed recommendations
I do not plan on getting anything soon but I am the type of person who throws myself into research years ahead of time.
With Kaiju’s recent health issues I’ve realized I need to really get to work on finding another working breed that will fit. The BRT is absolutely perfect for me:
- Good even temperament
- Loves to work and easily trained
- Aloof with strangers but not overly so. In public, Kaiju is generally open to attention from strangers without being very interested in them. At home, he is all business and that’s how I like it. I have PTSD from repeated home invasions/attempts and need a dog that makes me feel safe while also being under control.
- Does well with other animals
My one and only con is that the breed is very heat sensitive. I really like to go out and do things with my dogs but live in southern USA where the highs in the summer average 85-100° F. Kaiju is miserable in anything over 73° which makes up about 60% of the year here.
Breeds I have considered but don’t have much experience with:
-Cane Corso: I like the well raised ones that I have met
-Boerboel: On paper they seem to be very similar to BRTs but I have never interacted with them
-Central Asian Shepherd: Very interesting to me but I have had very little interaction with them
Breeds I don’t think would work:
-Doberman: The health issues in the breed terrify me
-Most shepherds are too high energy for me (The AHT already keeps me on my toes and he’s only 13 pounds)
-Most Spitz breeds
In conclusion, the most important traits I’m looking for are:
-Mostly heat tolerant
-Handler focused
-Good with other animals (mostly dogs)
-Good guard dog, doesn’t have to be huge
I may have made a post similar to this before but I couldn’t find it and have forgotten anything it yielded. Thank you!

Boston Tea Party: The Independence Era’s Biggest Slay 💅🔥
OKAY OMGGG I AM SOO FASCINATED TODAY LIKE YOU CAN SAY I'M ON CLOUD 9. THIS IS GONNA SOUND CRAZY BUT I'M THE HAPPIEST PERSON EXISTING RIGHT NOW.
WARNING: don't be weirded throughout the reading. like you have no choice so (lmao) So my first semester ended, and I tried to catch up on some historic incidents that I longed to read but couldn't due to assignments, tests, etc. So, I decided to research the American War of Independence (don't ask me why). Context: The American War of Independence occurred between 1775 - 1783, when the British captured US, and formed 13 colonies (the first one to be Virginia and the last one to be Georgia). Now its capturing had various purposes such as trade, and because the US had religious freedom. The post is not about the war ENTIRELY but about one of its really sassy, girly pop events caused by no other than Samuel Adams.
The British introduced this taxation policy called TEA ACT 1773. It was basically Britishers taxing on several daily consumed items such as glass, lead, oil, paint, and paper, in which TEA was one of the main concerns. This dissatisfied the Americans and hence, a protest was held to abolish such conduct. Samuel Adams was known as the founding father of the US and played a huge role in ending this exploit. HIM, along with his army, dumped the British East India Company's tea of around 300 chests which is 92,000 INTO the Boston Harbour. LIKE NOT SAMUEL BEING SUCH A SASSY GIRLY POP CUNTY LMAO. I LOVE HIM Then the British introduced another reform in response called the Intolerable Act... BUT OMG SAMUEL UR SO AWESOME SAUCE LIKE- Another event I like about the war the British and French had known as the Seven Year War between 1754 - 1763, which happened in between the war of independence. This war created a huge ruckus for both countries, leading to a downfall in the social, economic and political circumstances. Now we all know how the French are lmao. To take their revenge, they stood with the Americans to help them overcome and fight against the British. NOT JUST THE FRENCH, BUT SPAIN ALSO TOOK THE USA'S SIDE AND THESE THREE ALLIANCES FOUGHT TOGETHER TO END THIS CAPTURE. This battle was known as the Treaty of Paris, which freed countries such as the US, Canada, etc. from colonisation. THIS MOMENT HAD ME GAGGED AND LIVING FOR THE DRAMA OF HISTORY’S DEPTHS (AND YES, I WAS A HISTORY STUDENT IN HIGH SCHOOL, SO THIS ISN’T MY FIRST RODEO), BUT BABE, THIS WAR? ABSOLUTELY SERVING CUNT!

ok this would be like a couple years away MINIMUM but would it be bonkers insane if I made aliyah through a PhD program?? I know that I plan on getting my PhD once im done with undergrad i just always imagined I'd stay in the USA. im looking at programs for a mock assignment and stumbled across some in israel and like?? maybe I wanna do that?? I've literally never moved out of the USA, barely ever left it in fact, and I'm terrified of change. but I still want to make aliyah somehow and also be able to work and educate myself and all that shit. I always imagined that I'd be doing that post-PhD once I have life a little more figured out. which idk if im ever even gonna do that shit bc how is a fancy piece of paper and a few years of research meant to help me figure my life out. ill probably be just as clueless 10 years from now.
anyway like. would this be a step too far. it's not a 100% chance id do it but is it something I should consider?? or should I just stay in the USA to finish all my education and make aliyah sometime in 10-15 years instead of a few years.
also I really am fascinated with the programs offered in israel which would be a huge portion of this obviously. I like that there's a strong focus on the science portion of psychology bc im interested in that and not mental health care (which is what is primarily focused on in the USA)

The King's (Chibi) Crisis
While I plan on posting something bigger tomorrow for Usamamo Week 2024 (run by @random-mailbox and @lilliebellfanfics), I decided to use the prompt for "Free Day" to finally post something I have had in mind for a while. I'm putting in my "Innocent Royal Affairs" series but the prompt helped me finally get it down on paper. Links first but then I'll post the whole fic underneath:
Tumblr media
     “ACHOO!”
Mamoru’s eyes went wide and he jumped out of bed as the sound came over the baby monitor. He glanced back over his shoulder to make sure his wife was safe before he ran out the room, across the hall, and into the nursery. Mamoru was by the crib of Princess Chiba-Usa in record time. He opened a drawer, pulled out digital medical gloves, and ran a complete diagnosis by scanning his daughter.
HR: Normal
BP: 95/58
Temp: 100.1
“Dear lord,” Mamoru gasped as he read the results. “Computer, open a channel to the family of wisdom.”
“Boss,” Zoisite grumbled as he answered the call, slowly rousing. “It’s late. What’s wrong?”
“Chibi-Usa is ill,” Mamoru reported firmly.
“What’s her symptoms,” Ami asked, as she sat up in bed next to Zoisite when she heard Mamoru’s words. “What’s wrong with the little princess?”
“She has a 100.1 fever and is sniffling,” Mamoru explained, his eyes darting from the results to his daughter and back multiple times. “She’s sleeping peacefully now.”
“So let me get this straight?” Zoisite groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. “She has her first cold?”
“Yes! I want a full workout to make sure it's not magic related,” Mamoru ordered, a plan forming in his head. “I want you to run a comparison on the database of all known youmas, droids, and known monster types. I need to make sure she hasn’t been poisoned in someway”
Zoisite exchanged a look with his wife before he responded. “I’m hanging up now.”
“What?” Mamoru grunted, his body becoming tense at his friend’s response. “My daughter is sick. She needs a complete diagnosis.”
“Mamoru,” Ami sighed as she laid her head down on her pillow. “You are a former doctor, so you are blessed with an abundance of information. You need to get a handle on it or it will consume you.”
“That being said my wife needs her own sleep for the baby she’s carrying,” Zoisite sighed as his hand reached out and caressed Ami’s stomach. “Just get a washcloth, dab her head, and try to get some rest.”
“What about,” Mamoru countered but the line went dead. “Hello? Damn it! Computer, dial the family of strength.”
“Mmmhuhm,” Nephrite grumbled as the call connected. “Wuh, wuzzup?”
“My daughter is displaying a low grade fever,” Mamoru reported, his eyes locked on Chibi-Usa’s vitals. “Have there been any anomalies sighted in the area in the last few days?”
“Numh, Mumuh,” Makoto replied in something between a snort, yawn, and a groan. “Mmm.”
“I want you to get to the control room and do a full city wide search to make sure there are no disturbances,” Mamoru commanded. “If you run every scan possible it should only take like…5 hours.”
A loud crunching sound came through the speaker which Mamoru could only assume was Nephrite destroying his communicator again. The replacement he received would be the 4th one this year alone. Mamoru intended on making sure they came out of his paycheck.
Chibi-usa grumbled and began to roll in her sleep causing Mamoru’s heart to clench. She was uncomfortable he could tell and he wanted to make sure everything was fine with her. He immediately dialed the next group in his contact.
"Jadeite,” Mamoru called when his general picked up. “I need you to hit the library. I want you to look through all the research materials and see if a minor fever may be related to any known curse."
“I’ve got a curse I can show him,” Rei hissed before turning over and pulling a pillow over her head.
“Boss, you need to calm down,” Jadeite insisted, picking up his communicator to talk into it properly. His other hand reached over and stroked his wife’s back affectionately. “Zoisite already messaged everyone and let us know you are freaking out and overreacting. I’m going to turn off my communicator now and nothing short of a Class Five, world ending disaster is going to turn it back on.”
“I am not freaking out or overreacting,” Mamoru stated firmly. “Now come make sure my baby hasn’t been cursed by a demon or I will banish you to the frigid depths of space.”
“Good night Mamoru,” Jadeite replied before ending the call. Mamoru felt his entire body tense from the lack of respect he was receiving.
"What the hell? Call the family of leaders,” Mamoru ordered the computer. “Kunzite I want…"
“Damn it Mamoru!” Minako roared. Not through the communicator but instead her voice carried from her and Kunzite’s wing of the castle. “It’s three in the morning! Some of us are trying to have sex!”
“Blast it all,” Mamoru roared as he turned towards the door and began to head towards pulling all of his generals out of bed by their hair. “I swear when I get a hold of them….”
Mamoru stopped as the door to the nursery opened and his wife came in with a sleepy look in her eyes.
“I can hear you through the baby monitor.” Usagi yawned as she moved past her husband and towards the cradle. “You‘re freaking everyone out.”
“But Usa…,” Mamoru stumbled, his mind still going a mile a minute. “Chibi-Usa could have been poisoned by a demon, cursed by a youma, or…”
“Or maybe she caught a cold when we took her out for a ride in the stroller,” Usagi suggested as she placed the washcloth she had brought in against her daughter’s warm head. She picked up her tiny daughter and sat in the rocking chair close by. “She’s going to be fine Mamo. Calm down.”
“But…,,” Mamoru struggled, his mind overwhelmed with all the possibilities of everything terrible fate which could befall his baby. “She’s…”
“It’s okay little one,” Usagi sang to her daughter as she began rocking her. With her hair down nursing their daughter back to health and wearing her white nightgown, Mamoru thought his wife looked like an angel. He often thought of her as such but moments like this made it even harder for him to think she was absolutely sent from heaven. “Daddy is just being silly.”
“I’m just…,” Mamoru stopped as he watched how Chibi-Usa stopped fusing as she was rocked back to sleep. His gaze dropped to the med gloves he was still wearing and a smile formed on his face as he realized just how foolish he had been acting. “You’re right…daddy is just being silly.”
O.O.O
Come back tomorrow when my first Non-Senshi AU story finally drops. It's a nice light read clocking in at...11k!!

Note
I don't remember if you already answered this, sorry in advance if you have, but what are your thoughts on the Bernette 79 Yaya Han edition sewing machine + embroidery machine? I consider myself a cosplayer and a lolita (Yaya is, as far I can recall, a cosplayer but not a lolita), and I've only ever sewn on a vintage Singer in a table and a Hello Kitty Janome. I don't see myself using the embroider option a lot since I embroider by hand, so that part would be taking up space unless I put in the effort to learn. On the other hand, it's a pretty shade of purple and is meant to sew over a variety of costuming fabrics which cannot be said of my current machine. It seems like a lot of extra stuff I probably don't need or have time to learn about if I do need them, but preliminary research seems to show it's a great value for the price (unless you break it). Or do you have any other recommendations in the same line? Thanks again for all your diligence and hard-earned expertise!
Okay, so I just sold one of those to someone whose other machines are a Hello Kitty Janome and a vintage Singer in a table, and I had to immediately check if you and them were the same person. So if you're Singer in a table is a 201, you should really meet my other customers.
Also quick note to everyone who is interested in this machine: you can buy it from the company that I work for. It's an internet model, so I can sell it to anyone in the USA. I can price match anyone else selling it. If you buy it from me, I get credit for the sale and I make commission (but it doesn't cost you anything). So if you want a Bernette b79 Yaya Han edition, or probably any other sewing machine, please shoot me an ask and I'll give y'all my work email or my sale code.
So I personally don't like Yaya as a person, but the B79 is a pretty good deal if it's what you're looking for. The fact that it's got embroidery and it has the digitizing software is really the thing that pushes it into the really good price point. On the sewing side, the foot kit is a really good perk, especially because not a lot of places keep feet in stock that work with the dual feed.
But if you're really not interested in the embroidery, I'd suggest just getting the Bernette b77, which is the sewing-only version of the b79 (if you want the embroidery-only version of the b79, you're looking for the b70Deco). It's going to be about a thousand dollars cheaper. It, sadly, is not purple, but that's nothing a few stickers can't fix. My store's current price on the Yaya 79 is $2499 and our price on the b77 is $1499, so it's literally a thousand dollars.
(Or, if you're absolutely insane, you can get some Cricut infusible ink paper and an EasyPress mini and sublimate onto the front of your machine. It's the kind of plastic that takes sublimation. Isn't that absolutely bonkers wild?)
That said, if you're willing to spend the extra money, you would be getting embroidery with a very large hoop size (for a beginning sewing machine, anyway), the foot kit, the built-in stitches and designs, and Creator9. I tell creative people who are interested in embroidery machines that you should not consider embroidery software to be optional. There's a lifetime worth of fun premade designs and projects in the hoop, and most people are happy to jut use those, but most of the people who are in my age range would not feel like they're getting everything out of their embroidery machine if they can't digitize goofy ideas from scratch. Creator 9 is like a thousand dollars normally, so it's what I find really pushes the price of the Yaya machine into the "really good deal" range, if you ask me. But, if you're not interested in embroidery, it's not really worth paying the extra money.
Anyway, if you're interested, please buy from me because it won't cost you more and it helps me pay my utility bills.

European X-ray laser explores a poorly understood state of matter
The properties of warm dense matter have until recently been little known. Now, thanks to the use of X-ray lasers, physicists are gaining more and more information about this important but still mysterious state of matter. The first comprehensive observations of ionisation processes in warm dense matter, carried out at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (European XFEL), have just been presented in one of the most prestigious physics journals.
State of matter with a temperature of a few thousand degrees and a high density, close to that of a solid, can be found, among others, in the interiors of brown dwarfs or gaseous planets. Although common in the Universe, it is very difficult to be produced and analysed in the laboratory. A new era in experimental research of this so-called warm dense matter (WDM) state began just a dozen years ago, when physicists launched the first free-electron X-ray lasers. At the forefront of this type of device is the nearly 3.5 km-long European XFEL laser. A series of experiments recently carried out there made it possible to observe for the first time how quickly a metal transforms into the exotic state of ionised WDM to become transparent (non-absorbing) to X-rays at the end of the process. The achievement of the international team of scientists – including those from the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN) in Cracow – is discussed in a paper published in the journal Nature Physics.
X-Ray Free-Electron Lasers (XFELs) are used to generate high-intensity X-ray pulses lasting single femtoseconds, i.e. millionths of a billionth of a second. These can be used to study the structure of matter at atomic length scales and to track phenomena on extremely short time scales. One of only a dozen such devices in the world is the European XFEL in Hamburg, built in cooperation with the DESY research centre.
“In our experiment at the European XFEL, we illuminated copper samples with X-ray pulses lasting 15 femtoseconds, using different, gradually increasing intensities”, Prof. Beata Ziaja-Motyka (IFJ PAN, DESY) introduces the experiment. The first author of the paper in question, Dr. Laurent Mercadier from the European XFEL, adds some physical details: “When a single X-ray laser pulse reached the material, it caused strong ionisation. The electrons released in the process were characterised by high temperatures. Under these extreme conditions, the copper was transformed into a state of warm dense matter. We meticulously recorded how much radiation passed through the matter and from this inferred the ionisation changes in the observed system.”
Simulations carried out using the BOLTZMANN SOLVER software, developed since 2004 at DESY by Prof. Ziaja-Motyka, were particularly helpful in interpreting the measurement results. This tool was used to simulate changes in the electronic occupancy of individual energy levels in WDM depending on the intensity of the incident laser radiation.
By confronting experimental data with simulations, it was established that when the X-ray intensity becomes sufficiently high, atoms of WDM become strongly ionised. As a result of this phenomenon, new energy levels appear which can be occupied by excited electrons – making WDM opaque for photons resonant with transitions to these new energy levels. These states had already been observed previously with optical lasers, however, the lasers’ energy limitations did not allow them to be studied in more detail. Now, thanks to the European X-ray laser XFEL, it is possible to characterise them accurately also in response to various intensities of X-ray pulses. In accordance with theoretical predictions for X-ray absorption spectra, prepared by Dr. Joshua Kas (University of Washington, USA) and Dr. Andrei Benediktovitch (DESY, Hamburg), it was further observed that with increasing the laser intensity the warm dense matter becomes first opaque and then – at highest intensities – transparent to the laser pulse.
“The appearance of ‘transparency’ – i.e. lack of absorption – in WDM is a consequence of the high ionisation of WDM atoms occurring at sufficiently high X-ray pulse intensities. The energy of the X-ray photons available in the experiment then becomes too small to excite further electrons. As a result, these photons cannot be absorbed by the warm dense matter at all,” explains Prof. Ziaja-Motyka.
Knowledge of the properties of warm dense matter and the processes taking place within it is not only of astrophysical, but also of practical, engineering importance. Matter in this state plays an important role in certain types of controlled nuclear fusion (ICF – Inertial Confinement Fusion), and also appears during the ablation of metallic heat shields of spacecraft returning from orbit to Earth.
The team of physicists at the European X-ray XFEL laser, led by Prof. Nina Rohringer (DESY, Universität Hamburg), intends to continue research into the electron and ionisation processes occurring in WDM and their dynamics. On the Polish side, the work is co-financed by the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Voting Is Powerful
Hey US peeps! Now is a great time to check your voter registration, register to vote, or update your address on your voter registration before the election in November.
Why? Because, whether you have strong feelings about candidates, measures or not, it is a privilege to be able to vote and use your voice in your community. Not everyone has that privilege. That's just it!
The more citizens who vote, the more our elected officials can represent a majority of our citizens. Rarely is there over 65% voter turnout. And the average for most elections is much much lower.
If most citizens don't normally vote, it is very powerful when most of us do vote.
(tips and resources below cut)
See also EAC.GOV for the US election assistance committee.
Check & Register To Vote
Each state has an office of the Secretary of State (go to https://sos.[Insert your state name].gov) which deals with elections and voter registrations. You may also update your voter registration from your state's office, view candidates and measures, and much more depending on how they have set up their system. It is my understanding that each county has an elections office that has a similar website.
Each state also has different laws concerning voting. Make sure your registered name matches your ID as well as your address. Be especially careful if you have more than one last, middle, or first names.
Examples:
Oregon Secretary Of State Elections
https://sos.oregon.gov/elections
Clackamas County Elections
https://clackamas.us/elections
Voting Tips For Newbies:
We all know politicians are not known for honesty but how can we trust they will be more inline with your personal world view than other candidates? This is based on my personal routine. I've voted and lived in multiple different states across the country. Here are a few helpful tips. I've been lucky and have only needed to use numbers 1 & 2, and 3 very seldomly.
1. Read a voter's pamphlet - (see also secretary of state websites) look at endorsements; especially teachers, unions, police, chamber of commerce, other politicians, PACs created by special interest groups; buzz words mentioned, types of past experience. This is a job interview and you are their new boss.
2. No pamphlet? Quickly search the internet. Look at a local paper interview, their personal website, any endorsements, etc.
3. Visit your local elections office's website (state, county, federal) or write them asking for information if you really feel up to a challenge. This is your right to be informed.
4. When all else fails, spend 20 minutes at the library for important elections. Librarians are happy to help with specific questions, as long as they are fact based and researchable.
Other informative websites:
Ballotpedia.org - information about upcoming US elections. A great source, especially for federal elections or state and local elections where there is difficult to find locally provided information.
Example: Ballotpedia 2024 Presidential Election
538 - Do you enjoy looking at numbers and polls? This site has all of the election polls you could want, with a focus on the federal election right now. But, all local polled races can be found here as well.
270towin.com - a graphical and numbers based map of the USA tracking the US national election by electoral vote.
Lastly...
Voting can seem overwhelming. And, it seems more difficult than it should. To me, that shows the importance of voting. If it weren't important, there wouldn't be other people actively trying to stop you from using your voice by voting or becoming involved in your local city council/community center/volunteer programs/peaceful protest. Good luck, and happy thoughts!
