i think it's so weird how the internet used to genuinely be a nice place to be, because it wasn't really marketable and it wasn't the convenient "everything is on here and everything Will be on here" as it is now. it was just little groups of people in their own little corners making forums and communities. it wasn't ever like "oh no i can't put my laptop down!! i'm addicted to it!!!" it was just .. another way to connect with people. a place to have some games. if you were lonely and didn't have any friends it was a nice little escape. a GENUINELY nice escape. i remember it. i was alive for that. i was young when it was still like this, but it was like that and i remember it. and then phones started to become more like computers. my mom went from having a flip phone to a smart phone. i watched my older sister go from a phone with sliding keyboard where taking pictures was a novelty to social media apps till i got my first phone and suddenly EVERYTHING was in my pocket. phones started to overtake computers for sake of convenience and marketability, and now it's like. every second you spend on your phone is another cent someone else is making. everything you have to do in order to live a life is on your phone. you clock in on your phone. you look at menus at restaurants on your phone. you even order on your phone now!!! in advance! your food will be ready before you get here and you don't have to speak to anyone!!!!! you are constantly near your phone because it is so important to you and so you are now available 24/7!!! it's so convenient it can track your health and habits for you!!! we can also give this data to other apps for your convenience! would you like these companies to know your sleep schedule? would you like these companies to know how fit you are? your medical records are now on your phone! you make appointments on an app now! your medical results are now sent to you on your phone!!!! it's all on your phone! oh, you want to use your computer for this? okay, well the website is practically impossible to navigate because it was made with phones in mind. IT'S ALL ON YOUR PHONE!!!!!
you want a break from your phone for a bit? alright, that's fine, but if your friends are trying to contact you, to talk, hang out, or maybe even because of an emergency you won't know. not unless it's on you 24/7 of course!!!
i never use my phone. i am on my laptop first before i go to my phone. i've never cared about my phone and that hasn't stopped, but i've watched more websites die. more of the internet Die. more websites favor mobile interfaces and completely abandon or neglect computers. "download the app to see this!" "use your phone to log in!" AI is everywhere in search results. it used to be community driven wikis and forums.
want to watch this movie? want to read this book? download this app. buy a kindle! get it digitally get it online! need a textbook for your college class? it's online! it's digital! and it still costs you $70 to rent a digital copy of a textbook!!! isn't this so great!! it's so accessible!
i go to school for something deeply intertwined with the internet. i have film major friends, animator friends, and every other news/media/entertainment outlet intertwined with these fields. many of my friends are very wellversed in most of this stuff because it is literally our job. i've also never been surrounded by so many people with such genuine distaste and hatred for tech ever in my life than these people who work with it for a living. almost all of them i know are so vehemently against streaming services and go out of their way to find physical media, preserve it and salvage it. all my college classes are filled with discussions on dependence on this technology, the dangers of the things we work with, and etc. etc.
it's not really that walkmans and CDs are interesting and cool because they're vintage to us, but because we grew up with those and hate what we have to trade for the sake of "accessibility" that comes with streaming services. we miss years where it wasn't like this. younger generations, people only 5+ years younger than me, are interested in the novelty of a world foreign to them where your every move wasn't tracked and you actually owned the things you bought. that's SAD. AND HORRIFYING ???
and it's just like . i don't know. i've genuinely thought about going to a store, getting rid of my phone and getting a shitty flip phone for calls and texts only before. i WISH i could do that. i can't because i have 40 apps that i can't live without because it is necessary for my job and medical appoinments (i am chronically ill). i have to scan QR codes to navigate daily errands and experiences. i have to have an app for my concert tickets. for my movie tickets. for any reservation i make. i need an app to ride the bus. if i go to museums sometimes you scan QR codes to learn more about what's in front of you. AT A MUSEUM. without my phone i'd be completely isolated from the world. you never used to be isolated from the world for not having the internet. it used to be the other way around.
and well. okay. go outside and meet new people, yes, but everyone's online. social settings aren't what they were during the 2000s, not even what they were in the 2010s. 2020 quarantine fundamentally altered how everything is set up as well. to connect with people you get their tiktok or their instagram. you're more unreachable if you have neither.
and what about people who can't go out and find people like them? what if it's not that easy? what if they're disabled and can't get out of the house often? what if they're queer and live in a very conservative area
queer spaces irl are so heavily designed for allos too. not to mention, unless you live in a major city then these places typically are gay bars or the local libraries teen events. maybe i don't want to go to a bar to meet other queer people maybe i want to do something else.
and like. there's kind of not a solution? this is just the world we live in and we have to make due with it. my closest friends are all online and living near each other irl isn't viable for most of us in our current situations. i would love if that were the case. it isn't.
i have to clock into work on my phone. i have to check paystubs on my phone, i don't even get an option for it to be mailed to me. i have to access all my medical documents on the phone.
i appreciate the accessibility of some things, i really do, but my phone is not my phone, it is an android. it's samsung's. my data is theirs and they could brick it if they really wanted to. i have apps on my phone i can't uninstall from samsung.
idk. i hate phones i think.

hey there! i'm saving this here on my blog in case of broken link, this is part of the journals in the elusive carmen sandiego site, all credits to cj & prudence :D
Some time, now or never… Tarragon, St. Paul’s Bay, Malta
Chase Devineaux took a flight from San Francisco to Milan, a train to Naples, a car to Salerno and then boarded a boat to St. Paul’s Bay in Malta. Granted, he took the long route, but he had more than one associate to encounter. Every stop was a security meeting, except Malta wasn’t in his official itinerary.
Tarragon, an unassuming restaurant with views of the Mediterranean, served some of the best food the island had to offer. Devineaux arrived late afternoon, called the restaurant to confirm a reservation, and checked in at the Gillieru Harbour hotel for a shower. Before he knew it, the sun was setting and he was seated by the maître d' before a North-facing window.
A waiter announced the arrival of his ‘date’ about ten minutes later. She was punctual, as expected. In a laced dress of layered white silk, she wore Italian leather sandals whose strings climbed up her calves and ended in tassels an inch below her knees. Around her neck was a platinum band, plain, understated and hallmarked by a personal jeweler in Venice.
He stood to greet her, she completed the kisses and let the waiter push back her chair as she reclined.
“Thanks for coming,” Chase started, turning first to the drinks menu, “Want to… share a bottle or —”
“Have you had Maltese Wine?” she tapped his wrist.
“No,” he answered, “let’s do that, with fish.”
“Pescatarian?” she laughed lightly and ordered a bottle of chilled Marsovin Sottovoce Ġellewża and two fish dishes. With that out of the way, she studied the man before her and attempted to guess why he would want to meet so fastidiously this summer.
“You… want to keep internally guessing, or should I get to it?” Devineaux asked, turning from the cooling seas to his dinner company.
The wine came, he tasted, approved; then both glasses were filled and she took her first sip.
“You have documents,” she hinted to the large brown envelope next to him, “I thought we agreed to never speak of work?”
Chase smiled, but omitted his usual chuckle at her teasing.
“This isn’t work…,” he pulled the envelope into view, “Rosen did as she promised after the operation in Kamchatka, she destroyed the files. Except for a few of yours.”
“She got rid of your files but kept mine?” her dulcet laughter preceded another sip of rosé, “That sounds like her.”
“They were important,” he exhaled, “these are yours… incident reports about a hotel fire, child services, everything that got you into the system. It’s not much, but what I have in here are the remaining physical copies.”
A silence extended and the thief was momentarily still.
“Have you made these digital?” Her question was nonchalant.
“Yes…” hesitantly, he told her the truth.
“Then send that to me, and burn all this.”
Chase breathed, “Wait, there’s more.”
Her body language conveyed little, but her eyes clearly hinted curiosity.
“Have you heard the name Malcolm Avalon?”
Leaning back into her chair, she crossed her legs, “You’re going to tell me about him?”
“Argentinian businessman, collector, acquired an Amedeo Modigliani sculpture last month?”
“Modigliani, a Tête de Femme?” she commented and took another casual sip of wine, “Good turn-of-the-century pieces are rare, do you know his broker?”
“Hold on,” Devineaux paused, “let me focus.”
“Then focus,” she mildly mocked him and put her glass down for the waiter to refresh.
“The night of the fire, Avalon lost both his wife and daughter, there’s a corresponding police report… a few newspaper articles…” Chase scrolled through items on his tablet, “You were found not far from the hotel…”
Salads arrived and she took a bite. Then she watched him move around making his case, and gave a slight approving nod.
“It could have been sloppy police work, or some misunderstanding, but at the time, nobody made the connection.”
“And why are we trying to make this connection?” her question lingered at the word ‘why’, “Is it so impossible that my mother was an undocumented hotel staff?”
“You think that’s your story?”
“I think it makes no difference,” that statement flowed easily, and Chase believed her.
“Right,” Devineaux nodded, “So, some of ACME was at Avalon’s Buenos Aires Hacienda when the Modigliani was delivered, small party.” The detective moved to an image of ACME’s Secretary of the Board Gunther Metzger among some nameless faces in front of a large artwork, “The woman in that painting... —”
She held his arm to better study the picture.
“Chase,” she sighed, “why didn’t you start with this?”

Longtime readers of the site might know I have an affinity for Sonic food promotions, so much so that I dedicated a YouTube series to chronicling past promotions. When SEGA emailed me to tell me about the limited time menu, I had to make plans to visit my local IHOP to see how the promotion was rolled out.
I have not been to an IHOP in decades, so I did not know exactly how they operated, but it’s a sit down diner with table service. The restaurant was surprisingly clean, and I say that because I’m used to the more mom and pop diners which prefer to show a little more grease. As far as Sonic decor, the menus at the tables were all the branding I saw. I was hoping for maybe some window decals and posters but a quick search on their website did reveal that Sonic branded gift cards also exist.

The menu itself does not offer anything new or unique to Sonic, as all the items are existing menu items with new names. I will say, however, that they are all very appropriately selected with either the character’s color being referenced (Sonic’s Blue Blur Special being blueberry pancakes), a pun being made (Knuckle’s Chicken Sandwich) or a characters favorite food being utilized (Amy’s Sweet Strawberry Delight). The Sonic nerd in me noted that the menu was using renders from 2010’s Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing and in Amy’s case, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)! This isn’t a complaint, it just was kind of wild to me that I was sitting in a restaurant in 2024 and was looking at renders for a game that was released the year SEGAbits started.

One omission from the physical menu that does appear on the IHOP app is the mention of making your meal “Sonic Style” which adds a side of onion rings. This little bit is probably the one addition that pushes the menu over the top for me. Pancakes and onion rings are such a bizarre combination that the food promo fan in me totally loved.

As you can see above, I went with Sonic’s Blue Blur Special and I asked the waitress to “Sonic it up” with some onion rings. I also added a side of fruit to create the illusion of eating healthy and had a side of coffee. The pancakes were quite good, and the onion rings were a special treat.

I even managed to take some “ring portal” photos with one just because I was in a silly mood. The promotion did not end with the menu, as a QR code invited guests to join the IHOP rewards program. New members received 5 points, and you receive 1 point for every $5 spent. After my visit I managed to rack up 13 points which I could redeem for various digital codes of newly released Sonic games or an exclusive Amy Rose costume for Sonic Superstars which sees Amy in a retro diner costume.
I’ve seen some fans online complaining about how the costume is tied to buying food from a restaurant, which is just baffling to me. The costume exists as a promotion for IHOP and the intention is to get new customers in and expand reward club memberships. Without the IHOP cross promotion there would be no retro diner DLC! The fun is in eating a Sonic themed pancake and leaving with a unique Amy Rose costume. It’s like in the early 90s when you had to buy Cookie Crisp to get a little plastic figure of Sonic standing on a skateboard.

Overall, I’d highly suggest Sonic fans run over to their local IHOP and check out the menu. It’s fun to have a Sonic infused breakfast and getting some DLC is a special treat. Here’s hoping we see more Sonic food promotions in the near future, my fingers are crossed for another Sonic movie Happy Meal this December.

Day 3: Thursday January 2nd, 2025 [Tokyo]
Breakfast: pork & egg Konbini sandwich
Lunch: Izakaya food and a Sochu wine
Dinner: Pork, egg & dipping noodles with a beer
Steps: 25,032
After a delightful 11 sleep, Morgan and I woke up at 9am, showered and head into Tokyo central to explore. The train only took about 20 minutes with one connection, so it was a breeze to navigate. Morgan was keen to get a Suica transit card but we were struggling to find any stations that sold them (I have a digital one on my iPhone that isn’t available for Samsung users). We spent almost 45 minutes walking around the ginormous Tokyo station trying to find the info centre. We finally found it and Morgan was able to buy a monthly card, which suited us just fine. We also got our second Eki train stamp which was very cute.
We were walking through Marunouchi shopping district and Morgan wanted to visit the Imperial Castle so we started walking in the direction Google Maps offered. We were almost immediately distracted by a Super Mario pop up store and went to check it out. Inside we bought a ¥200 Mario Bight Holiday Stamp Rally sheet which was a stamp scavenger hunt - cute! Without reading any of the directions, we headed outside and immediately found the first stamp. We then went to find the second and it took us about 45 minutes of going up and down the escalators trying to find the Princess Peach one. We decided to read the instructions and wouldn’t you believe it, the game became much easier. Walking around the shopping districts took us about 2 hours to complete and we delighted in seeing people of all ages carrying the same stamp booklets that we had. We only had to follow a family once in order to find the stamp station. In the middle of our hunt, we stopped at a stationary store to purchase a notebook to keep all of our stamps in. It took ages, but i was very happy with the one I chose. We finally finished the hunt at 2.30pm and returned to the starting point for our final stamp and prize.. which was stickers. Well worth the 2 hours of walking! Haha
We then went to get lunch but struggled to find a place to eat as most places closed around 2.30pm to tidy and reset for dinner service. Morgan found us a hole-in-the-wall restaurant with an English menu so we went inside. We ordered a delicious spread of edamame, fried tofu, karaage chicken and Morgan tried some panko crumbed horse mackerel - no thank you. We also had two drinks and the meal cost ¥3990 - not bad!
After lunch we walked over to the Imperial Castle. We had heard a lot of megaphone voices and saw a large police presence earlier in the day, but we weren’t sure what was going on. Morgan googled it and the 2nd is when the Imperial family address the public and open the grounds. Dammit! We could have gone, but also acknowledged that it was probably packed to the brim. The internet said it was the first proper address since pre-COVID so many people were expected to attend. We walked up as the police were leaving in drones and all crowds were gone, so we had no problems snapping a few pics of the palace as the sun set - the lighting was perfect! We were left wondering if the palace was build to be illuminated in that exact location with all interfering foliage removed. It seemed like it was the only thing the light was touching.
Whilst in the area, I wanted to check out the Uniqlo flagship store so we walked for 10 minutes and yet again were overwhelmed by the sheer amount of people shopping at once. They have the ‘Hatsu-uri’ new year sales which are similar to Aussie Boxing Day sales. It was chaotic! Morgan and I split up to visit our gendered sections. I am too tall to buy pants in Japan, which was a huge bummer, but I did buy a cute merlot-coloured bomber jacket, some thermals and a black long sleeved top. Morgan bought some pants and a green version of my travel bumbag. I also found us some coin organisers so that we didn’t just have loose coins in our pockets.
After walking around Uniqlo for an hour, our feet were tired and getting a bit sore. We tried to find a sake bar to have a drink but the two we googled were closed! We decided to get the train home and reset before heading out to dinner instead. Luckily we had accidentally walked right near a station that was a direct line back to our hotel. It was definitely time for a rest.
We went out for dinner at 7.30pm to a ramen place that Morgan had found online; a tiny restaurant called Roppongi Menya Musashi Kosho. There were only 12 seats that sat in a bar style around the kitchen where 3 men were cooking. It was a limited menu so all meals came out quickly. Instead of ordering ramen, we ordered “dipped noodles” instead and they were DELISH! The pork that came with it was roasted and seared on a hibachi grill and accompanied a boiled egg. The noodles looked a wee bit like fettuccine and the dipping sauce was thick with bone broth, chives and spices. I’m drooling just writing about it.
After dinner we decided to walk and see the Tokyo Tower - it was a 20 minute walk from near our accom. We drove past the tower on the way to our hotel on Day 1 but I didn’t realise that it’s nearly the same size as the Eiffel Tower. I was just going to take a photo of it lit up at night but Morgan wanted to go up and see the city from high up. With tickets only ¥1500 each, we went up. The views were gorgeous and it was packed. We got a souvenir photo taken and I bought Morgan and I some good luck charms from the gift shop. When we went to see our photo Morgan purchased the hard copy to take home with us.
The walk back up the hill seemed exhausting so we booked an ¥800 taxi back home and were glad to be able to get into our PJ’s and relax after an absolutely behemoth day of walking!

In 2024, I will walk into a physical space—a restaurant, a hairdresser, an arts venue, an artisanal cheese shop—and instead of being handed a physical piece of paper with some useful information on it, or being told it in words, I will be shown a faded roundel with a QR code on it. I will hold my phone’s camera up to it wearily. Sometimes it will work, but the font on the menu or the information will be small. I’ll have to enlarge it and take my glasses off to read it, because I’ve reached that age. Sometimes it won’t work at all. Sometimes the information on it will be out of date.
In all cases, many people—some elderly, others with access needs, children, anyone who just doesn’t fancy constantly looking at their phone—will be pushed toward more useless screen time and away from the kind of brief, friendly interactions with other humans that help us all feel part of the fabric of life. We’ll have reached the point of overdigitization.
It's not that there aren’t more gains to be made in technology. Incredible things are happening in biotech, especially since the pandemic. The world of continuous glucose monitors and lateral flow tests (LFT) will keep growing. In 2024 we will see new kinds of LFTs that test for other infections and problems. We will see more useful work in truly personalized medicine. But in the UK, at least, the benefit of those innovations will be increasingly available only for those who can pay for it themselves. The division between the technological haves and have-nots will only continue to grow.
And although technology will continue to flourish, my guess is that the truly big gains in digital communication have now been made for a generation. If there’s innovation to come in digital communication it will be in the field of overdigitization, using screens where paper and actual words from real people both work better. We could—and should—use this next decade to shore up the gains we’ve made for all members of society. But I predict that, in 2024, we won’t. The Good Things Foundation estimates that 10 million people in the UK lack the basic digital skills needed to access the modern world. And 6.9 million people will continue to be excluded if they’re not given proactive help. But the current British government doesn’t seem much interested in raising the floor for the worst off.
These things can’t be done by individual companies, which come up with good-sounding ideas like, “why don’t we let people order a coffee while they’re getting their hair done, using a QR code!” It’s exactly the kind of things that incorrigibly urban WIRED readers like me think would be fun to use—but companies don’t tend to think about how to help people who aren’t going to spend money with them, or who are too put off by over-exuberant digital-everywhere to actually go into the shop.
Companies can look after their employees. And they can work to overcome that other half of the overdigitization problem: that many jobs are becoming more boring and isolated because they involve the equivalents of more pointing-at-QR-code-roundels and less actual interaction with people. But while companies can think about employees and about good customer service, thinking about improving equality and fairness is the job of government, not businesses.
There is of course one thing I can predict with total certainty for the UK in 2024: That the British public will get to have their own say on digital inequality and a whole host of other issues. Because, in 2024, Parliament will be dissolved in advance of an election.
