Kinktober '24 Day 11

Request: Would love to see some Fatgum x reader breeding kink shenanigans? Fatgum’s defensive abilities would make for a great quirk marriage scenario
Requested by: CherryDad (AO3)
WARNINGS: PIV, Oral (f! Receiving), cream pie, size difference, breeding kink
A/N: This is gonna be another morning edit for sure.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You sighed to yourself as you sat perched on the edge of your couch. You could feel your anxiety manifest in your gut, as you waited for your ‘husband’ to come home from patrol. It had been just over a year since the hero commission announced their new program of forming a new hero bond for the future from preexisting ‘relations’. In so many words the hero commission was revitalizing the archaic practice of quirk marriages. Last year every hero from the top 100 heroes was sent a list of approved ‘partners’ for them to choose from. You were one of the lucky ones in that fact that you actually knew, well had known, your top approved mate.
You have a fat-based quirk, you are able to manipulate and create on a cellular level of all living things. When healing you do not only rely on the energy, and body fat, of the person you are healing, but also tap into your own energy to aid others. Based on the nature of your quirk, your top match was Fatgum, or Taishiro Toyomitsu.
 You have known Taishiro since your time at UA. He was two years ahead of you, but because of the caloric nature of your quirks, you were on a strict high caloric intake. You often crossed paths when working on meal alternatives with the support lab. He had mentored you in a way, you weren’t sure if he even remembered the conversation, but he helped you feel less self-conscious about your body size. Because of the nature of your quirk, you were almost always sitting at a weight deemed ‘unhealthy’. The label of unhealthy, stuck with you so badly while you were still a teenager, that you stopped the overeating necessary to be able to use your quirk effectively. You began to work yourself to the literal bone, often passing out, just to maintain a ‘healthy’ image. When Taishiro caught wind of this, he pulled you aside and encouraged you to do everything in your power to aid the most amount of people, even if it meant being shamed by the media for encouraging an ‘unhealthy’ standards for young people. You don’t think even if he remembered the conversation he ever realized the impact that one talk had on you. Or how his kindness led to you having a not-so-small crush on him that carried onto adulthood.
You had lost touch with him after he set up his hero agency in Esuha City. While you were still on good terms and were friendly with each other you had drifted apart as people often do while growing up. You were never nailed down by any agency. You worked as an independent contractor that agencies could lease. Your nickname as the ‘One Women Hospital’ proceeded you: making you a fought-over strength to any agency. Your normal clientele were heroes in the top 10. You loved your life and independence, that was until the hero commission brought your normalcy to a halt with their sudden decision to bring back and enforce quirk marriages.
You would never feel as relieved as you were when Taishiro accepted your request of marriage. It was a huge relief off your chest of the fear of being randomly assigned to not only marry a stranger but also carry the minimum of one of their children. That’s what led you here to tonight, pacing in Tai’s home, waiting impatiently for him to get off of work. You had been married a little more than a month at this point but hadn’t consummated the marriage. Fuck, you hadn’t even kissed outside of your wedding. Coitus was only mandatory while you were ovulating like you were today.
You couldn’t help but feel uneasy. You both had been working your normal hours since the wedding, there was a silent agreement that you wouldn’t worry about the act itself until you had to. You had already pushed down your schoolgirl crush on Tai. He was one of the most genuine people you had met, and kind to a fault. Outside of his personality, he was so handsome to you in either of his forms. You hope if you were to have kids they’d inherit his lovely golden eyes and bright smile. Despite those nice images your nerves still stood strong. How would you even go about being intimate, but still remain on the same terms? That’s of course only if he wanted to have sex; technically he just had to cum inside of you. Would he want that?  Just as you felt yourself bordering on a spiral you heard him entering the house.
“Hey,” he greeted with his normal chipper smile. He was in his skinny form, which while smaller than his fat form of 8’2”, was still huge. He easily towered over you standing at a minimum of 7 ft.
“Hey,” you greeted back shyly. You were in your normal lounge clothing of an oversized t-shirt paired with a well-loved pair of cotton sleep shorts and fluffy socks. You had debated dressing up special for tonight, but you didn’t want to make this any weirder than the situation already was.
“How was work?” you asked,
“Good, it was a slower day, there was only one incident of bank robbing, so I mostly just worked on paperwork.” He answered smiling down at you, “How was your day off?”
“Good, I ate at my favorite café and read for a but before going to the doctor’s.” you answered.
“How was your appointment?” he asked.
“Good, they did a blood and urine test. I’m definitely ovulating today.” You responded.
“Alright,” Taishiro nodded, “When did you want to…” he started before trailing off, both of you walking on eggshells as you attempted to not offend or make the other uncomfortable.
“I guess sooner than later,” you answered, in a noncommittal tone, “I guess we should talk about how you want to go about this. Are you okay with sex, or do you just want to cum in me-”
You stood in shock as he pulled you in for a surprisingly soft kiss. You gasp, your eyes widening, before easing shut. It felt like your brain shut off as Tai pressed you firmly against the counter and he deepened the kiss. You let him dominate the kiss, a whine escaping you as he pulled back, resting his forehead against yours.
“Fuck, sorry,” he said, panting lightly, “I couldn’t hold out any longer.” He confessed. Before he could explain any further you fisted the front of his jacket and pulled him in for an equally demanding kiss. He let out a surprised groan, melting into the kiss as he pulled you close, holding you in his arms.
“Fuck,” he groaned as you pulled back, “You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that.” He admitted bashfully. You hummed in response.
“It has been a long month,” you agreed.
“No, baby, I’m talking years,” he elaborated, blush staining his cheeks.
“Oh,” you said dumb found, “I didn’t-, I always thought that-, that you wouldn’t feel the same way.”
“Baby, I’ve been holding a torch for you since we met. I just didn’t want you to feel pressured when I was your senpai.” He admitted, “And then after I graduated, my biggest regret was not telling you how I felt.” He took a breath before saying, “It’s okay if you don’t feel the same-”
“How could I not feel the same way.” You cut him off with a smile, “You were my senpai, you were one of the first people to make me feel of value despite the number on the scale.”
“Fuck, you have no idea how relieved I was when I found out my top match was you,” he confessed, looking down at you fondly.
 “I know we have to talk about this more, but the doctor gave us an hour window, and it’s starting soon.”
“Okay,” he nodded, there was nothing you or anyone else could do to wipe the smile off his face.
“Are you okay with us having sex?” you question.
“Baby, I’ll take whatever you give me,” he answered honestly.
“O-Okay,” you nodded your nerves returning, “Do you want to-, Or should we-, um is the bedroom okay?” you fought to get out.
“The bedroom sounds perfect love,” he replied, before scooping you up in his arms. You let out an “Eep,” as he walked up to his bedroom and softly laid you in the center of it.
“Do you have any hard stops?” he asked, tugging not only his sweatshirt over his head, but his shirt as well. You unconsciously bit your lip, taking in his toned form.
“Baby,” he said, pulling your attention back away from his body.
“Hmm?” You replied.
“I was asking if you had any hard stops,” he repeated, amused.
“Any body fluids outside of cum and spit,” You answered, “I also don’t feel comfortable with consensual non-consensual.”
“Okay,” he nodded, working at his belt.
“You?” you asked.
“The same,” he nodded, “My safe word is takoyaki. Yours?”
“Code,” you answered eyes locked in on his jeans sliding down revealing the large hard-on pressing against the front of his underwear, your eyes widened as he eased himself out of his boxer briefs. You knew objectively he was going to be big, but you didn’t realize how proportional he would be. You couldn’t help but rub your thighs together needily as he began to crawl up his bed towards you.
“Aw, are you feeling needy baby?” he asked teasingly. All you could do was let out a whine as he began helping you out of your shorts, “Can’t have my wife go unsatisfied.”
You could feel your heart rate go up at him casually call you, his wife. Normally you may find it a bit cringy, but his genuine tone made you feel butterflies. He helped you out of your shirt next, leaving you bare. He pulled you into a soft kiss, before slowly making his way down your body. He pulls a whine from your throat as he nips and sucks at your nipples. He takes his time, only making you more desperate.
“Fuck, Tai, please,” you plead with him
“Please, what love?” he asked, looking up at you with a smirk, making your stomach flip. You’d never seen his face without his sweet smile.
“Please, I need you,” you beg, “Need you so bad.”
“Oh, and where do you want me baby?” he asked, teasingly.
 “Lower, please” you beg, getting more and more desperate.
“Down here?” he asked, stroking your inner thigh.
“Fuck, yes.” You said tears of frustration gathering in the corner of your eyes. You couldn’t help but moan as he separated your lower lips. A whine escaped you from the contrast of the cool air in the room and Taishiro’s hot breath against your clit. He didn’t give you any warning before he dove in. You were left a moaning mess, as his fingers stretched you to your limit, while he sucked on your clit. You threaded your fingers through his surprisingly soft hair, tugging on it hard and harder the closer you got. You let out a guttural moan tugging hard on his hair so that he was flush with your pussy. He narrowly avoided getting crushed by your thighs as he angled his shoulders to keep your thighs open. He fingered you through your orgasm, whispering prairies against your skin. Your grip loosened as you fell back onto the bed limp as you came down from your height.
“Ready, love?” he asked, wiping the excess of your release off his face with the back of his hand.
“Please,” you answer, still feeling desperate, despite just coming down from your high.
“Okay,” he said, grasping his cock to give it two hard strokes before sliding it up and down your slit to collect your excess release, before thrusting his tip inside, Taishiro hissed at his first time breaching your walls, He slowly rocks you back and forth thrusting a bit more of himself each time as he bottomed out. He stayed there for a second before you whined craving more stimulation.
“Just, can’t get enough can you love?” he teased, pulling almost all the way out before thrusting back in, knocking the wind out of you. You share a moan as he begins to pick up speed.
“Fuck,” he groaned, “Can’t wait to see you if it takes. Fuck you’re gonna be all round and plush when it comes.” You both moaned shamelessly.
“Fuck, need it Tai, fuck, need it so bad,” you blathered seconds before clenching around him in a throat. “Wanna be full, please,” you pleaded desperately. “Want it, want it so bad, please fuck. I wanna have your kids.”
“Fuck,” Taishiro groaned, His hips stuttering as he came in you. You both shared a moan, staying still for a moment before your little bubble of peace is ruined by the sound of a phone ringing. You ignore it for a moment before rolling over and seeing a slew of messages from different agencies. He pulled you tight back against his chest.
“You’re not leaving until we know it takes.” He said staring down at you; dead serious. You couldn’t help but gasp as she felt his cock once again stir against your back. He pulled you in for a loving kiss, as he eased your phone out of your hands. He quickly clicked on airplane mode, before tossing your phone aside. You let out a pleasant sigh, as your lips once again found each other and he pulled you back so you were straddling his abs once again; ready for the next round.
My favourite books from 2024! Another really strong year of books for me -- every year will have some stinkers and a bunch of middling reads, but the highs of this year were really high so I'm pretty content
As always, I give more detailed descriptions and opinions of the books in my month reviews, but here's a quick breakdown for anyone who's interested:
The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt
A non-fiction book that looks at how childhood has been “rewired”, focusing specifically on the increase of overprotective parenting, increase of tablet/social media usage, and decrease of unstructured, independent play. It was a fascinating read that really looked at how children need to be given lots of opportunities to play, take risks, and make mistakes in order to learn and grow and how a loss of that might be impacting people’s mental health. As someone right on the cusp of the age bracket that’s being focused on, it felt very exposing.
Apothecary Diaries v1-2 by Natsu Hyuuga
Maomao is kidnapped and sold as a servant to the imperial palace, where she serves as a general dogsbody in the rear palace, home of the emperor’s various consorts and concubines. She’s determined to keep her head down until her contract is up… until she helps solve a mystery and catches the eye of the powerful eunech Jinshi who soon learns about her in-depth knowledge of apothecary work and anything to do with poisons. Very funny premise, Maomao hates Jinshi soooo much and he is such a simp for it. She just wants to eat poisons and be left alone and he says “no<3” to both of those
Bury Your Gays (and Straight) by Chuck Tingle
Both of these are very explicitly queer horror novels. Straight is a novella that riffs on the format of a zombie story, but with straight people becoming inexplicably violent towards queer people one day a year. Bury Your Gays is about a Hollywood screenwriter who realises his horror creations are begin to stalk him in the real world. Both are very intentionally built around social commentary on queer issues, and despite have audacious premises they completely own their camp and end up producing really well thought out, insightful stories. I can’t say I liked either as much as Camp Damascus but either is worth a read.
Console Wars by Blake J. Harris (and Blood, Sweat, and Pixels by Jason Schreier)
Console Wars is a nonfiction book I’ve meant to read for years on my brother’s recommendation and I quite enjoyed it. It explores the history of the video game console market in North America, with a focus on how Nintendo revitalized it and how Sega then swooped in to upset the monopoly it held. The book is written in a very narrative, personable style and I found myself really rooting for the various people and companies being portrayed ahahaha. A shockingly fun read. I also read Blood, Sweat, and Pixels which wasn’t quite as narratively compelling but a related read that looked at games with complex development cycles.
Defekt by Nino Cipri
Technically the sequel to Finna which I also read this year, but Defekt works as a stand-alone and is, imho, the better of the two. Both deal with a surrealist horror Ikea setting, where the sheer density and liminal-space-ness of it all allows strange wormholes to open up between these stores from different dimensions. Finna deals with actual wormhole hopping, whereas Defekt focuses in on one employee who gets assigned to a very strange overnight inventory shift.
The Disabled Tyrant’s Beloved Pet Fish v1-2 by Xue Shan Fei Hu
Fish isekai book. Is this a good book? No. Is it a really really fun book? Yes, in spades. In this book, Li Yu wakes up in a court drama novel… but not as a character but rather as the tyrannical prince’s pet fish. He is given the task to improve the prince and is stuck figuring out how the hell to do this as a fish. This book knows exactly how ridiculous it is and leans into it. Li Yu and Prince Jing are both idiots in very unique and exciting directions. No one knows what the fuck is happening.
Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire
A prequel to Every Heart a Doorway, though it works perfectly well as a standalone. Honestly I liked it more than the first. This book has deliciously gothic horror vibes, and it plays with all the tropes you would expect from gothic horror / fear of the sublime. It’s about sisters who find a strange chest that lets them descend to the sinister land of the Moors. This is where vampires rule, werewolves stalk, and mad scientist’s ply their craft. The girls end up separated on and very different trajectories as they grow and acclimatize to the brutal existence of the Moors.
Escape From Incel Island by Margaret Killjoy
Exactly what it says on the tin. Completely insane book that is very worth the read if you feel like something that is patently insane. I strongly recommend treating this as a read aloud with a friend or loved one because I read it with my brother and couldn’t stop laughing. Top notch mercenary Mankiller Jones is sent to escort a computer scientist to Incel Island to retrieve lost governmental data. There they have to survive the hoards of Nice Guys, Volcels, Betas, and every other violent inhabitant of the island if they ever want to… escape from Incel Island.
Heaven Official’s Blessing v6-8 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
I finished the main series of Heaven Official’s Blessing (without reading the extras yet), and man what an ending! I could not have asked for a more epic or satisfying conclusion! The final battle and its various stages? The character reconciliation? The villain reveal? Perfect, no notes. The series itself follows Xie Lian, a prince who has ascended to godhood twice and been cursed and cast out from Heaven just as many times, giving him the title of the Laughingstock God. The story begins with him, to everyone’s dismay, ascending a third time.
Horrorstör (and Paperbacks from Hell, My Best Friend’s Exorcism) by Grady Hendrix
This book also deals with a Strange Alternate Ikea, but is the superior book. This was one of my top reads for 2024, and it was flawless horror. It is essentially a haunted house story set in an Ikea, that manages to be both chilling, disgusting, and a shockingly insightful critique of capitalism and retail. Very worth the read.
After reading this I also read Paperbacks from Hell (a nonfiction book that does an analysis of horror fiction from the ‘70s and ‘80s, very good read) and My Best Friend’s Exorcism (which was decent but not my favourite of Hendrix’s since possession and exorcism isn’t my favourite brand of horror. The vaguely queer undertones and ending I found interesting, and it did some cool things throughout.)
Jeeves and Wooster books by P.G. Wodehouse
I ended up listening to so many of the Jeeves and Wooster audiobooks this summer while I was travelling. There were some I really really loved and some that fell very flat for me. I think I listened to too many in a row by the end… These books are like popcorn, not deep but very fun, and follow the airheaded but good natured Bertie Wooster and his man Jeeves who unfailing swoops in to solve all the strange and inane problems the Bertie gets involved in. They tend to be funny, light-hearted, and clever in their resolution of plot problems… though some of the issues do get rather repetitive. My favourites were: The Inimitable Jeeves, Very Good Jeeves, Right Ho Jeeves, and the Code of the Woosters.
Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi
Some excellent science fiction, especially for my Pacific Rim loving heart. This bordered on the cosy fantasy genre, while mixing in plenty of science, world-building and a good dash of excitement. During the Covid-19 lockdown, Jamie Gray is stuck trying to make ends meet as a food delivery driver… until he runs into an old acquaintance who suggests he might have a very different job offer for him. Jamie ends up joining this very secretive “animal rights group” and finds out just how massive, dangerous, and otherworldly these “animals” are by being risked to an entirely different dimension filled with giant, radioactive monsters.
Lula Dean’s Little Library of Banned Books by Kirsten Miller
One of my favourite books from this year! Tthis book managed to hit on very topical subjects with both tact and humour. Lula Dean has spearheaded a book banning crusade, managing to get a number of “problematic” books removed from the library and has made a show of setting up a Little Free Library in her yard full of “appropriate” books instead. When Beverly Underwood visits her mother and hears about this she’s so exasperated with it all that she quickly hatches a plan swapping out the dust jackets of some of the banned books with the ones in Lula Dean’s Little Free Library. The rest of the story is about various people in the town who borrow a book from Lula Dean’s library and how the book they got instead ends up impacting not just themselves but their town. The first story involves a penis cake. Can’t recommend it enough, starts out humour and quickly becomes something you want to rally around.
My Happy Marriage v1 by Akumi Agitogi
This was pure mindless fluff, it was honestly a delight. This is a low-fantasy, Cinderella-esque story set in the Taishō era. It focuses on Miyo Saimori who lives under the thumb of her cruel step-mother, haughty step-sister, and indifferent father. She’s resigned to being treated like a servant in her own home and ekeing out a strained existence, but her life takes a turn when she finds herself nominally engaged to the allegedly cold and cruel Kiyoka Kudou. It’s just absolutely overwhelmingly cute and I really enjoy the contrasting POVs.
A Series of Unfortunate Events and Poison for Breakfast by Lemony Snicket
I’d never finished The Series of Unfortunate Events when it was originally coming out, so I finally sat down and did that, and honestly it was well worth the wait! It was a very interesting series to read as an adult, especially all in one go, because it really let me appreciate everything that Snicket was trying to say. It was a much more clever and philosophical read than I was anticipating, and The End was fucking superb. He absolutely stuck the landing, it completely blew me away. Poison For Breakfast was also a very interesting standalone novella that felt like surrealist philosophy. I might have even enjoyed it more than the basic TSOUE.
The Poison Squad (and The Poisoner’s Handbooks) by Deborah Blum
Poison Squad is a very compelling and topical nonfiction about the formation of the American Food and Drug act. The state of unregulated food processing in the late 19th century was, in a word, nightmarish. Don’t read this book if you have a weak stomach. But it’s completely fascinating to see how one person, Dr Harvey Wiley, made it a personal mission to scientifically prove what all these mysterious food additives were doing to people and put limits to what could be sold to consumers. I liked it so much I went to read Blum’s other book, The Poisoner’s Handbook which is set during Prohibition and explores the rise of forensic medicine and again exposes how people were being poisoned by simply living their standard lives.
The Pushcart War by Jean Merrill
The real, true history of the New York City Pushcart War!! For real!!! This is a delightful underdog story that is really written in the style of a history textbook recounting the fictional Pushchart War. This war started in New York City as the roads get increasingly congested with traffic, the worst offenders being the increasingly massive and arrogant trucks. The trucking companies hatch a plan though: if they begin to push out the little pushcarts, framing them as the problem for the congestion, then how hard would it be to push out taxis next? Or buses? Or motorcars? How long until they can make the road a perfect habit for trucks and trucks alone? How can something as small and poor as a pushcart owner fight back?
Railsea (and This Census-Taker) by China Miéville
I heard Railsea described on tumblr and it sounded sufficiently insane that I had to read it for myself. This author is truly unrivaled when it comes to bizarre worldbuilding that feels both very, very grounded in reality while also being completely unexplained and impossible. Railsea is essentially a Moby Dick meets Treasure Island retelling but with trains instead of boats and giant, mutated, vicious moles instead of whales. Unhinged. Can’t recommend enough. I followed this up by reading his novella This Census-Taker which was not as much of a frolicking adventure but fucked with my brain just as much or more than Railsea did. Genuinely not sure I even know what happened in that story but I enjoyed the experience of being completely fucking baffled for some 200 pages.
The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw
Another book to ideally not read if you have a weak stomach. This novella is very big on unrelenting body horror. This is a twisted fairytale retelling in which a cannibalistic Little Mermaid meets a plague doctor Frankenstein. Both of them are walking away from cruel past lives, along a trail that’s soaked in blood and viscera. You feel how painfuly and disgustingly human this book is, while also being so wildly separate from anything that resembles human anatomy or morality. Superb.
Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System v1-4 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
The last of MXTX’s three series I needed to read. It was the one I was most hesitant about, but I ended up having a really great time with it. It is simultaneously the most light-hearted and silly of the three series, while also the one that most gleefully dives into torture and sex. So you get a bit of everything with this, and as usual MXTX does a really good job of mixing the humour and series in a way that keeps things constantly interesting. The story is about Shen Yuan who dies our of pure, frothing fury after reading the shitty ending to the shitty, porny webnovel he’s been reading for hundreds of thousands of words. He dies cursing the lousy author and the lousy writing so he’s given a chance: step up and do it better! Which is easier said than done, when he finds himself waking up in the body of the series’ villain who is destined to be gruesomely tortured to death. Better get on that!
Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent by Judi Dench and Brendan O'Hea
This is the written result of a number of interviews held between Judi Dench and Brendan O’Hea and she discusses her time as a Shakespearean actress. It looks into what her time working with theatre companies was like, summarizes the plays she took part in, and delivers into some fascinating character analysis of the roles she played. An absolute treasure of a book for someone who enjoyed their Shakespeare and/or Judi Dench.
Singing Hills Cycle v1-5 by Nghi Vo
Probably my favourite series that I read this year, I can’t wait for the next book! This series follows Chih and her magical bird companion who come from the Singing Hills Monastery, an order that is devoted to keep recording tales and keeping a history of the land. Chih travels all over in these various novellas, collecting stories, memories, and histories that they come across. The first book has them entering the recently unwarded palace of the late Empress to learn about her marriage, imprisonment and rise in power. The second has them trapped by a pack of tigresses with nothing to do but frantically lure them into comparing stories.
The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
Ten year old Ada was born with a club foot and because of it has never been allowed to leave her apartment. She lives a hard life trying to care for her younger brother and suffer through the abuses of her mother. Things change though as the Second World War truly begins and London begins to evacuate children to the country. Ada is determined — she and her brother will evacuate, they will escape their mother’s house, even if it means her learning how to walk on her club foot. Even if it means facing how different life is for unwanted slum children in the country, and confronting how much she and her brother don’t know about life. This was a very touching book, it did a great job of balancing Ada’s justifiable pain and anger with an optimistic story. Queer elements are all subtext but there — they aren’t the main focus of this story.
When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill
This book absolutely took my breath away, it was a next level literary experience. It’s very, very solidly magical realism, so don’t go into this expecting true fantasy, everything going on here is allegorical and a beautifully done allegory at that. This story is set during the 1950s, in a time surrounding an event known as “The Mass Dragoning” when thousands of women suddenly, spontaneously, transformed into dragons and flew away. The story follows Alex Green who was a child during this event. Her aunt transformed. Her mother didn’t. Both of these things have profound impacts on Alex as she grows up, and a woman’s role in society, a woman’s anger, her joy, her desire are all questioned and explored.
How do you feel about using multiple spells for a single goal? Doing wealth spells one after another until you're out of difficulties, for example, versus doing the one and letting it be?
I've got a chapter in a book I'm probably never going to publish about this. It's long. tl;dr: hell yeah cast a lot of spells for one thing, that's a great idea. Upg alert, etc.
Compound Magic: Many Hands Make Light Work
Compound magic is the phrase I’m using to discuss two similar ideas.
The idea is that if working one act of magic can affect our physical world to any degree, then working multiple acts of magic on the same subject can affect it to a greater degree.
This works at both the macro and micro levels.
By “macro,” I mean casting entire spells to influence various situations.
If you’re casting a home prosperity spell, casting multiple prosperity spells tends to be more beneficial than casting only one. Following our Witch-as-Monarch metaphor, you can cast spells that are like geologists seeking resources, like road-builders to strengthen trade routes, or like festival celebrations to revitalize your citizens.
More literally, if there is a situation that is resistant to change or in need of serious transformation, you can build a spellcasting altar dedicated to that single issue.
Spellcasting altars are useful in the practical sense that if you’ve got a whole altar for it, you might not forget that it’s something you wanted to work on.
They’re also very useful in the magical sense that as you dedicate a new “counsel room” to this topic and begin filling it with advisors, knights, heroes, spies, managers, and agents, and then continuously empower your Allies to work on your behalf through dedicated spellwork, all of these powers begin to compound and support each other.
In other words: the action of casting multiple spells can have additive or supportive effect which helps all the spells work better.
Not only this, but spells can begin to file away the rust on a situation and get the gears working - but run out of energy before the mechanism is truly brought to life.
If a single spell didn’t appear to manifest as desired, that doesn’t mean it didn’t do anything. It could mean that the situation was improved behind the scenes, laying a better foundation for success for your next spell.
Therefore, compound magic also means cleverly assigning spells to loosen up a situation and prepare it for change, to banish potential roadblocks, to protect the desired outcome, to empower the desired aspects of the situation, to bind the unwanted aspects, and so forth. In this manner, casting compound magic doesn’t necessarily mean to cast prosperity-generating spells over and over – it can also mean to cast banishings, protections, cleansings, and so forth, in the pursuit of prosperity.
This may all sound like a lot of work, but recall that we’re talking about very resistant situations, or situations in need of a lot of transformation before they suit your tastes. However, I hope you’ll agree with me that this concept in general actually really helps take a load off, because:
If your strategy is to work multiple acts of magic, then no single act of magic you work ever has to be perfect, or even exceptional.
Spellcasting anxiety is very real, and in my opinion boils down to the worry not only that unless everything is perfect then everything is ruined, but furthermore, that if any single spell doesn’t work it means the practitioner is a fraud.
If you instead adopt the mindset that it’s quite alright to need to work three or four acts of magic to influence a sticky situation, each spell feels less like you’re an actor making your debut performance in front of a judgmental audience, and much more like you’re going to try and treat the problem with a vinegar spray first, but if that doesn’t lift the bonds that’s quite alright because you’ve got a baking soda scrub to try next.
This isn’t to say that I think every single situation is going to require multiple spells to make the magic “work.” Far from it. But I don’t find there to be any utility at all in assuming every situation should be fixable by only one spell, and if that spell fails then there’s something wrong.
Overall, I find that the witch who often engages in acts of magic to keep the home safe and prosperous will find that this compound effect begins to work organically, and that over time all acts of magic eventually lead to an enchanted life, to greater or lesser degrees.
On the “micro” side of this concept we can examine the enchantment of a single object or formula.
Instead of considering that we can use multiple spells to influence a situation, we can see that we can work many smaller acts of magic over time to produce a single powerful spell.
Think about woodburning a very hard, difficult piece of wood. During the first session you may only get an outline of the design before you’re exhausted and in need of a break. The wood is still imprinted upon, but it’s far from the completed project you envisioned.
During the next woodburning session, and the next, the design is slowly filled in until it meets your standards of satisfaction.
This is conceptually very similar to re-casting the same enchantment over and over on a single object until desired results are obtained.
This is extremely useful for the pragmatic witch who may not have the ability to plan out spells on specific times and days, or who must act now without every ideal ingredient on hand.
And not only that, but it’s also useful for the witch who would just like to have some fun with magic and doesn’t want to twiddle their thumbs waiting for the most ideal possible moment to act.
If a witch would like to work up a pot of Noontide Shield Oil (pg. 34), but the working felt less than lustrous, the formula can simply be re-enchanted again next Sunday to deepen and solidify the enchantment. Or, suppose the original oil had to be worked in less than ideal conditions, or perhaps even with entire ingredients missing: the missing ingredients can be added later on, the spell re-cast over the same vessel in more ideal conditions, and so forth.
The same goes for any spell vessel, formula, charmed ingredient, or enchanted object.
These things can be fully re-enchanted by performing the original spell over again, switching focus from adding ingredients to empowering and instructing ingredients already added.
But they can also be encouraged in more minor ways, especially through regular feeding (pg. 9).
I think it’s important to note here that we’re basically talking about cooking. A chicken soup where you have to omit the chicken, and then shred up rotisserie leftovers and just add it to the broth when having leftovers, is not going to produce identical results as if you had been able to cook the chicken in the soup.
Either way, you’ve still got chicken soup - it's just that an enchantment made in the most ideal conditions is not going to be identical to an enchantment made in non-ideal conditions and later fortified.
So I don’t believe that it’s correct to say that ideal conditions don’t matter. I think they do matter, and that practitioners will notice an appreciable improvement if they are able to work with ideal circumstances.
But I also believe it’s correct to say that if you continuously re-cast enchantments towards the same objects and formulas over and over again, while supplementing missing or lacking factors, over time that enchantment deepens and becomes more permanent and more powerful.
Just like macro compound magic, I think that this helps reduce the difficulty in working powerful enchantments. You don’t have to work yourself up to exhaustion casting a single powerful enchantment that wipes out your ability to work magic for three days. You can meter your energy and pour out small amounts of your power, when needed or as desired, and slowly build up powerful magics around you.
Then, when an important “macro” situation arises, consider how it would feel to be able to reach for a variety spell vessels and formulas you’ve already been empowering for months, keeping them fresh and alive through periodic attention and feeding. Things begin to feel much less like a witch alone in a room, and much more like an empowered monarch surrounded by Allies.
Designs of Happiness - Track B02
L4mps Main Story Translation
Tumblr media
Title: Active Theory of Happiness
Characters: Nagi, Ryui, Toi, Netaro, Kafka
Summary: At the 4th Ward Mayor Appointment Ceremony, the cue card that Nagi prepared for his speech was completely drenched for some reason…
Thank you aca @/463ce6, myun @/myuntachis and Niri @/Niri_riri for helping me with proofing!
Tumblr media
Kafka: “...and I bet my life on revitalizing tourism in HAMA.”
Location: Ceremony Venue
Tumblr media
Kafka: Does having no large-scale commercial facilities or redevelopment investment make our region less attractive? The answer is a firm “no.”
Kafka: Finding value in resources that are already available to us and putting them to use effectively to change our circumstances positively–That is what HAMA Tours is working towards.
Kafka: I’m certain that most of you gathered here today are from Wards 15 through 18. Know that your wards are indispensable strategic zones in HAMA.
Kafka: As you had all witnessed earlier, these five members have been newly assigned as Ward Mayors—
Tumblr media
Nagi: …*trembling*
Yodaka: Nagi, remember to breathe.
Tumblr media
Netaro: Psst, can I eat my popsicle now?
Toi: Do you think it’s okay as long as he doesn’t make any noise, Ani-sama…?
Ryui: ‘Course not. Put it away.
Momiji: (The Ward Mayor Appointment Ceremony… This is the fourth time I’m experiencing this, but I’m still as nervous as ever…)
HAMA Ward Member A: Well, I suppose we don’t have anything flashy like Chinatown here. But I like how peaceful it is instead.
HAMA Ward Member B: Still, it’s sad that we didn’t have a single candidate after the very first Ward Mayor.
HAMA Ward Member C: The other 14 Wards managed to have successful Tours thanks to them, don’t you think we have a chance too?
HAMA Ward Member D: Right! Having twins act as Ward Mayors shows how novel they are at selecting fitting personnel. Not to mention, the two of them are super adorable!
Tumblr media
Daniel: The seats aren’t all filled, but you can tell the folks present are all people who wanna see their own wards flourish.
Momiji: That’s right… Do your best, Night Team…! Please try to put the peoples’ minds at ease!
Kafka: With the addition of the Night Team, I hereby declare once more, as representative of all the Ward Mayors, that we shall perform our duties to the best of our abilities for the specially designated tourism wards.
*clapping*
Kafka: Now, Nagi Hachinoya, the Mayor of Ward 16 and leader of the Night Team: Please come forward.
Nagi: Yes.
*Nagi moves to the front, jumps back from the mic, before standing in front of it again*
Tumblr media
Nagi: Um… Hello. I’m Nagi Hachino–
*thump*
HAMA Ward Member C: …He hit his head on the mic.
Nagi: …Ouch… Oh. Um, Sorry. Right…
*Nagi completely freezes*
Tumblr media
Nagi: ……
Nagi: ……
Nagi: ……
HAMA Ward Member B: …Did the mic bug out? Need to fix that…
Momiji: N-Nagi-kun, calm down! Or wait, maybe he’s too calm right now…!?
Netaro: He’s come to a full stop~
Yodaka: Right… Just looking at him is making me anxious too.
Ryui: Oi oi, are we seriously letting someone like that be the leader…!
Tumblr media
Toi: C-Cue card! Nagi-kun, look for your cue card! In your pockets…!
Nagi: Oh, right. I have those, um…
HAMA Ward Member D: Oh! He’s moving again!
Nagi: ……
HAMA Ward Member A: …And now he’s stuck again.
Tumblr media
Nagi: (The cue card… is completely drenched for some reason. I can’t read a single word.)
Nagi: (Oh, that’s right… I was thinking about what to write for my speech when someone called for me, so I left the room after tucking the card in my pocket and then I put the clothes for wash, not to mention I also got splashed by the fountain toda–)
Daniel:  …He’s been quiet for too long. The folks are getting restless.
Momiji: Oh no, what if Nagi-kun gets a bad rep over this…
Nagi: (Can’t be helped. I’ll have to give up on this.)
Toi: Huh? He put the cue card back in his pocket…
Nagi: I asked myself if I’d done everything I could until now.
HAMA Ward Member C: …He started talking all of a sudden, but what’s he on about?
Tumblr media
Ryui: Where’s the context, dumbass…!
Nagi: All my life, nothing ever turned out right, so I always get cold feet when it comes to doing anything at all.
Tumblr media
Nagi: Life would always pass by me, just like a river… and I was someone who could only watch it from the side.
Nagi: But then I tried running up a hill for someone else’s sake, and then I grabbed onto someone with all my might… Um, what I’m trying to say is, I jumped into the river and went against the flow, and the result was actually good for once.
Nagi: That’s why I decided I’ll try my best with everything.
Momiji: ……
HAMA Ward Member C: …He looks refreshed. Wait, is he done already?
Nagi: Um.
HAMA Ward Member A: No, looks like he’s still got something to say…!
Nagi: Our washing machines can erase both stains and cue cards. That’s all.
*silence*
Tumblr media
Nagi: HAMA Nice Trip.
Location: Ten Nights of Dreams BAR
Nagi: I think I gave the best speech I could.
*Ryui grabs Nagi*
Ryui: In what world!? Were you TRYING to kill me from secondhand embarrassment!?
Nagi: Ugh… Please don’t shake me so much.
Sonia: Leave Nagi-shan alone~!
Tumblr media
Mashiro: The two of you, please, do calm down!
Laika: Down!
Momiji: Um, good work at the ceremony today, everyone! Eat and drink as much as you want so you can have a fresh start tomorrow!
Yodaka: Good work on your speech, Nagi.
Chouun: It was very impressive.
Tumblr media
Toi: He did his best…!
Netaro: It was hilarious!
Nagi: Yeah. Though everyone left immediately after.
Tumblr media
Daniel: Oh yeah, I heard some gramps say it was over for us. Couldn’t help but laugh at that.
Momiji: Wha- Manager…!
Daniel: What? It’s not like I’m down in the dumps about it.
Momiji: (Maybe not YOU, but what about the others!? What if this makes Nagi-kun depressed—)
Tumblr media
Nagi: Chief, the future looks bright.
Momiji: Huh?
Tumblr media
Nagi: …I’ve always thought of myself as powerless. But then, I managed to stop Ryui with my own two hands—
Ryui: Literally.
Nagi: I got Toi to smile again. The happiness from that day still gives me strength, even after all this time. I’m brimming with sparkling energy.
Daniel: That the face of someone sparkling?
Yodaka: Quiet, Danny.
Nagi: …All this time, I let go of so many things because I was afraid that I’d fail to be happy
Nagi: Now, it’s like there’s someone telling me it’s time to take them back.
Netaro: Is this the work of a guardian spirit or some sort?
Toi: Hm, I don’t think that’s—
Ryui: A person with no confidence can’t do shit.
Nagi: In that case, I’m sure I can do anything now.
Momiji: (Nagi-kun’s never spoken so positively before…!)
Momiji: That’s right! As long as we’re alive, we have to find a way to be happy.
Tumblr media
Nagi: …! We have to be happy… You’re right.
Netaro: Since happiness is a chemical reaction, anyone is capable of replicating it. Should I lend you some references?
Nagi: Yes, please. I’ll read them all. And then–
Tumblr media
Nagi: I WILL be happy.
Momiji: Yep yep!
Nagi: And after I become happy, I’ll put that energy into flowers and scatter them all across the world.
Momiji: That’s a great idea!
Ryui: Scattering flowers everywhere…? Sounds disturbing for some reason.
Tumblr media
Daniel: Right, Ryui, about your shop…
Ryui: I know. I need a shop to be a Ward Mayor, right?
Momiji: That’s right. The criteria for selecting members of the Night Team is that  “they own a shop with roots in the local districts” after all.
Ryui: I’ve already been looking into some properties with Toi.
Tumblr media
Toi: We managed to find a property with the perfect feng shui. Not only is it facing the right direction, it’s even well-balanced between yin and yang energies. But…
Ryui: We’ve got a problem with the owner.
Toi: The Master of the house… In other words, this person is an old friend of our grandfather.
Ryui: Not sure if he’s pulling strings behind the scenes, but our negotiations are going nowhere.
Toi: I’ve asked them personally too, but…
Ryui: You don’t have to go through all that trouble. But, thank you.
Momiji: (I remember Toi-kun mentioning that Ryui-kun doesn’t have good relations with their family…)
Ryui: If he wasn’t in the picture, this wouldn’t be a problem, fuck’s sake.
Netaro: Is he a hindrance?
Ryui: Yeah.
Netaro: In that case, how about I control him using brain waves? The human brain is surprisingly easy to—
Tumblr media
Nagi: -Easy to understand! He’s saying we should deepen our bonds by helping out our fellow men.
Netaro: Or perhaps I could falsify the registry after making a clone–
Tumblr media
Nagi: He’s offering to take out a loan to buy the property, yeah.
Ryui: What the hell are you on?
Netaro: Oyoyo?
Toi: I’m sure he was just trying to help in his own way. Thank you as always, Netaro-san.
Netaro: Toi is my precious human after all.
Tumblr media
Toi: Huh…! Um, you’re precious to me too, Netaro-san…
Netaro: We have to watch the continuation of “Crash Landing on AI?” after all.
Toi: Yeah! Let’s buy lots of popsicles on the way back home too!
Netaro and Toi: Yay~
Nagi: The two of them first bonded over Studio Ghizli.
Ryui: …Hah?
Momiji: (Ryui-kun’s in a terrible mood right now…!)
Yodaka: So, have you decided on what kind of shop you’d like to run?
Ryui: …Don’t feel like telling you.
Yodaka: Oh my… Fufu, are you the type to hold secrets? Or perhaps you enjoy surprises?
Ryui: …Tch.
Toi: Wha~ It’s still a secret? I haven’t heard yet either…
Ryui: ……
Toi: Ani-sama, please tell me~?
Ryui: …Can’t be helped. I’ll tell you, and only you.
Toi: Okay!
Tumblr media
Momiji: (They’re whispering to each other… How cute. They’re close as usual.)
Tumblr media
Yodaka: The young man with an eyepatch who hides the name of his castle… There’s a certain romance to it.
Daniel: What’s the point when we’ll find out soon enough.
Momiji: Let’s let him be until he decides to open up on his own, okay?
Note:
I’m not 100% on this but I think AIの胴体着陸 (AI Belly Landing) is a parody of Crash Landing on You, a romantic Korean drama, which is localized in Japanese as 愛の不時着 (Love’s Crash Landing) where AI and Ai(meaning love) is the closest connection I have, since both Toi and Netaro enjoy watching romance and Netaro watches shows in other languages, including Korean.
SLDF Unit Profile: 124th Royal Heavy Assault Regiment ("Dai Maxbuster")
Alligiance: Star League Defense Force
Regiment Type: Heavy Assault (Royal Regiment)
Founded: 2705 (destroyed 2765; refounded 3152)
Current Commanding Officer: Colonel Ayako Nakano-Cunningham (3152–present)
Overview:
The 124th Royal Heavy Assault Regiment, known widely as "Dai Maxbuster", was reactivated in 3152 as part of the revitalized Star League Defense Force. This modern iteration is directly descended from the original SLDF Royal unit destroyed during the Periphery Uprising in 2765, and proudly inherits not only its name and traditions, but also its eccentric esprit de corps.
Reformed in 3152 from an approximately even mix of former Republic of the Sphere and Terran Defense Force personnel—many of them ethnically Japanese—and volunteers from the Kuritan worlds of Asta, Fomalhaut, and Altair, the reconstituted 124th represents both a legacy of Star League cosmopolitanism and the complex realities of post-Jihad loyalties.
Culture and Identity:
The 124th’s original reputation in the 2700s was infamous in the Draconis Combine: Terran-born Royal troops adoring Kuritan pop culture—complete with pop idol-painted ‘Mechs, stylized anime calligraphy, and ceremonial sword duels between cosplaying officers—caused more than a few Combine citizens to seethe with nationalistic embarrassment.
The modern regiment carries that legacy forward—but now, it does so with the presence and participation of real Kuritans, whose planets changed hands during the latter stages of Operation PERSUASION in 3152. The result is a regiment where love of Kuritan aesthetics and cultural homage now intermingles with authentic tradition, creating a surprisingly cohesive and self-aware culture.
'Mech personalization is common, with machine decals, "nose art", and decorations ranging from traditional shodō brushstrokes and family crests to animated mascot emblems and vocaloid-inspired murals.
Command ceremonies are often conducted bilingually, in both Japanese and English, reflecting the regiment’s hybrid identity.
Unit morale is famously high; esprit de corps is cultivated through ritual duels, cinema nights, coordinated formation displays, and a regimental theme song composed by a former Republic sound engineer.
Operational Role:
True to its designation, the 124th is a heavy assault regiment, typically fielding a frontline complement of assault and heavy BattleMechs supported by an attached self-propelled artillery battalion and engineering support vehicles for siege-breaking operations.
Within the SLDF order of battle, Dai Maxbuster is often deployed in the first wave of major thrusts—used to punch holes in fortified enemy lines and hold ground under fire. Despite their flair, the regiment is known for uncompromising discipline on the battlefield. “Flash in the barracks, steel in the field,” is the unofficial motto passed down from the 2700s.
Relations with the Combine:
Because of their Kuritan heritage and aesthetics, the 124th maintains a surprisingly cordial relationship with the DCMS, especially when paired in joint operations. Many among the DCMS attribute the beginnings of this relationship to Commanding General Melissa Hazen's assigning of the 124th to work closely with Gunji-no-Kanrei Ryūga Kurita's Combine Expeditionary Force during Operation TOUCHDOWN, and the subsequent use of the regiment as the core of the SLDF force sent to assist in the Second Draconis Combine Civil War of early 3154.
Even now in 3160, as the regiment helps to garrison Altair under the auspices of the New Jointly-Owned Worlds Treaty, certain conservative Combine officers still view them with thinly veiled disdain, considering them "half-children of the Dragon"—neither fully loyal nor fully outsider. The 124th, to their credit, takes pride in showing these skeptical officers the folly of their derision.
Good Intentions
Past =-= Next
Author's note: Su'cona's next part in Living Waters AU.
Warnings: None that I can think of?
Summary: Su'cona meets with his human again.
Tagged: @barn-anon, @bleedingichorhearts, @c-u-c-koo-4-40k, @egrets-not-regrets, @kit-williams,
Tagged continued: @sleepyfan-blog, @whorety-k, @ms--lobotomy @bispecsual @thevoidscreams
Tagged continued: @i-am-a-dragon34, @gra93fruit-blog
You had been quite surprised to have been approached by Su’cona, he was a mer-astartes, and he was a really large one too. With green, black, and gold on his scales. Dark skin and friendly ember-warm eyes that sparkle in the sunlight.
Your cheeks grow warm and you shake your head a little, slapping your cheeks a little to get yourself to focus on your work. You shouldn’t be distracted by a handsome mer-astartes with a deep voice, smooth as glass and deep as dark molasses that had almost felt like it had caressed you.
You were a part of a team of marine biologists who helped study areas affected by illness and disease. An order had come down to purge and burn everything that had been collected due to being highly dangerous and volatile, when the Mer-astartes had realized just what was Going On was.
The mer-astartes in Blue and Gold, Ultramarines? You think they are called, and brought everyone involved and explained what was happening and why it was extremely important to ensure for the safety of the people and the ocean to burn everything, as well as be checked over by some of their mer-astartes specialists for contamination.
Everyone had questions, and they had asked them, frustratingly the Ultramarines only answered half the questions. While some of the other questions they had kept vague. They had reasons for not giving all of the information, or so they said. They had done as they were bid, but you had been assigned to check on the affected area and to help set up the exclusion zone.
Su’cona was one of the specialists involved in burning the entire area which had seem a rather extreme solution. But the mer-astartes had been firm and unyielding in the matter.
The loss of ocean life and the destruction to the ecosystem was going to be immense and they had been told that the mer-astartes were going to help restore the area, once they were sure that no more of the Corruption was going to take root again. But not before. There is a lot that humans don’t know about mer-astartes, a lot of things that they leave unsaid, frustratingly enough. Su’cona had come up from the ocean, having spotted you and smiled softly at you. Leaning on the boat, his arms dangling into the boat as you turn to him.
“It’s nice to meet you again, Su’cona,” You say warmly to the Salamander.
“It’s nice to meet you again, my Spark,” He says warmly. “My brothers and I have finished cleansing the area that has had the Corruption happen. For safety it’s best for you and your crew to stay away until we are certain that the Corruption won’t try to take root again.”
“Do you know how long it will be before we can start revitalizing the area?” You ask him.
“It depends on a number of factors,” Su’cona says.
Not the least of which being of the Death Guard, whether it was a single one or a whole Chaos-cursed shoal that had been making the garden came back and made a Mess of things. Again. Slow to rouse is the anger of the Death Guard, but things could be very messy when they got pissed off. Especially those that were corrupted by Nurgle. Not that he’s going to tell you that.
“Have you seen any… strange Space Marines in the area?” Su’cona asks suddenly.
“Strange, how?” You ask him, wondering what’s going on through his head.
“Strange in the sense of looking… mutated, very large, multiple eyes, limbs, mouths,” Su’cona lists carefully, “Some of the more sensitive humans get bad headaches… Any unusual illnesses among your people popping up suddenly?”
“No?” You reply confused and wondering what he meant by that.
“Thanks for letting me know.” Su’cona says a slight frown gracing his lips.
“Su’cona- what?” You start to ask him.
But he seems to hear something and raises a hand up. You put your hands on your hips and huff, but obligingly wait, as some smaller Salamander Mer-astartes Pop up and speak to him rapidly in one of their languages. He responds to them, and they peer at up at you curiously and give you a big grin before saying something to Su’cona that has him shoot the younger Salamander an Unimpressed look as the younger Salamander swims up.
“What’s going on?” You finish your question.
“Pestering little brothers,” Su’cona says with a very tired sigh. “Stay away from the exclusion zone, please.”
“I will,” You say with a sigh.
Mer-Astartes could be so frustrating to deal with sometimes. But that was actually a good interaction. You have heard some… horror stories about some of the different should of mer-astartes.
How dangerous they could be. No one knows how they reproduce, and that is not a question they answer, if a particularly bold human has asked them. Or if they’ve answered, no one’s telling.
You tell the rest of your team what you were told by the Salamander and you head back to base. Your younger sibling had been slow in responding to you recently. You know that they had moved to the nearby oceanside city due to health issues recently.
You sent them a message asking if you could visit them in a few days and they responded that they’d be happy to host you. Also- they had a Surprise that they wanted to show you. A new person in their life that they’d like you to meet.
That had you raising your eyebrows in surprise, your younger sibling was … not aloof, but tended to be shy around people. When you were younger, they’d tend to stand next to you and watch as you made friends, and via osmosis they became friends with your younger sibling.
It didn’t help that they could sometimes come off as way more intense than they meant to. They struggled with saying the right words and often didn’t seem to understand what people wanted from them.
They had complained that it was like everyone else was given a manual or a rules book on what the unspoken rules were and that they were just lost and could never seem to say the right thing, or do the right thing to make friends, or not annoy people into hating them.
You often wondered if they might be on the Autism spectrum, or at the very least not neurotypical with how they reacted to things. They tended to shy away from people touching them, even their family members it was hard for them to allow touch.
They’d once told you it was because sometimes it felt like someone was dragging razors against their skin. So, to have a new person in their life, that is living with them, had you been very surprised, and a little bit concerned.
So you ask them follow up questions about their room mate. They had explained that they’d met a mer-astartes one day while on the beach and had gotten to talk with him. That had your second eyebrow rising in shock at that.
When you pointed out in a text message that this is the first time they had said anything about having met a mer-astartes. They had sent back a confused reply that they thought that they’d talked about them with you.
Which had you chuckle a little ruefully, your younger sibling had a terrible memory at times. And could accidentally gaslight themselves into believing that they had said something to someone, when in fact, they hadn’t told them anything at all.
Your younger sibling had a very active imagination, one that had gotten them lost in their own head a lot when they were younger… and sometimes tended to do so now that they are older.
AN (APPROXIMATE) TIMELINE OF THE NAVIGATORS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cosmodyssey's given us a slew of the Astral Express' former Navigators and my first question was, naturally, if we can actually give them a distinct order outside of "Himeko is the current Navigator".
The good news: Two-thirds of them can be cleanly placed on a timeline because most of their backstories imply or directly mention specific universal events. The other third is...blurry, but in my attempt to construct a timeline here I'll be giving my rationale for why I'm placing them where they are.
This is going to be long so I'm putting it under a cut.
Capy Baba is the earliest of the Navigators given to us in Cosmodyssey, and it's very easy to discern why. Their backstory explicitly mentions they took the helm at the end of the Swarm Disaster and that their "predictive pathfinding" helped the Express avoid the Swarm. They also existed in a pre-Synesthesia Beacon period of history and needed a human translator to aid them. Their work helped revitalize the Express' star maps so well that they're still in use today, and eventually Capy Baba retired peacefully once they were done with their work.
I'm not sold on the precise order of these next three, only that they're after Capy Baba due to the presence of the IPC in two of their backstories and the third being an Intellitron. For the former two, the IPC wasn't formally established until the Swarm Disaster was over (I've double-checked since originally posting and it did exist pre-Swarm Disaster, it just saw massive expansion and reforms after the Disaster), and I don't believe you start seeing independent Intellitrons until after the Emperor's War is finished.
Sometime after the IPC is formed and starts hiring bounty hunters, the crew and passengers of the Astral Express mysteriously disappear. A bounty hunter named Oakley is enlisted by Pom-Pom to act as Navigator in the wake of the disappearance, and they accept. They help the Express fight off "star beasts" while helping find the missing passengers and recruiting new ones. This takes place over the course of six months, and once the crew is suitably replenished Oakley quietly leaves the Express. They still hold the record for the shortest recorded stint as Navigator.
Bob, formerly of the IPC-wanted crime syndicate Tarantula, joins the Astral Express as a guard. Eventually, it's discovered that he's joined under a false identity and his exposure results in his assignment to the role of Navigator. It's mentioned he had a hatred of mechanical life but still invited them onboard "in times of war" (which I take as a sign his stint was either during the Emperor's War or right around the same time). It's unknown how he met his end, just that he died in a heroic defensive battle.
Sam-3000 is an Intellitron and her tenure is the most distinctive out of the whole bunch since she led an entire fleet of Astral Expresses. There's likely a long period before and after her time as Navigator where the trains are constructed and then fall to the wayside, but her backstory mentions her career was during "an era of enterprise". I feel that's supposed to point towards her leading the Express during the Second Prosperity (a 500-Era economic windfall for the IPC that gets more explicitly mentioned later). She only retires once she's unable to replace her own parts.
For the rest of the Navigators, the order is very linear and defined.
Dolly was a musician from Tiafoe whose music was able to attract many new passengers to the Express, and even brought Akivili back onboard. It is during her tenure that the fall of Akivili occurs, an event experienced by all Nameless, and the moment starts Dolly's anomalous crystallization. Before she is completely petrified she's able to assign a new Navigator.
It's explicitly noted that Isee's historical record has been tampered with repeatedly by History Fictionologists, but assuming the story we're given is correct: Isee oversaw an important period in the Express' history, covering the fall of Akivili and the subsequent birth of Nanook. Their career was defined by the chaotic schisms and diaspora caused by the loss of the Trailblaze, but they remained steadfast even when the Express was reduced to two passengers. They eventually stepped down from the position, and it's explicitly mentioned who succeeded them in the role. Notably, the Omen Vanguards begin to appear in the universe after they step down.
Falcon Amundsen is listed as coming into the Navigator role shortly after Isee, and it's under him that the Express regains the glory it lost in the wake of Akivili's fall. He's explicitly mentioned as taking the helm during "the early days of the Cancer of All Worlds", and was likely the first navigator that had to deal with Stellarons. Falcon's efforts to rebuild the Star Rail inspired a new generation of Nameless, but he passed on before he could see the ultimate fruits of his work.
Granholm eventually takes the mantle of Navigator at the age of 17. His career was in "a time marred by disasters and fractured worlds" (Stellarons), and the Nameless are transformed into cosmic heroes under his tenure. Granholm spends his life on the Express and passes on peacefully of old age.
It's shortly after Granholm's passing that the Express falls into disrepair due to the influence of Stellarons on the Star Rail and the universe. The train eventually crashes into an unknown planet and remains unfound for so long that its legacy begins fading into myth.
Eventually, a teenage Himeko finds the stranded Express and spends many years fixing the train. Once her work is complete the Express takes to the stars again, with Himeko becoming the new Navigator. She is the current Navigator and (we hope) she'll stay in that position for a long time to come.
We obviously haven't gotten an exhaustive list but this is a lot of Navigators and we can draw a pretty clean timeline of who was in charge in important moments in the Star Rail universe's history (or, at the least, where the gaps are for when certain events happened). Even if we don't know every single person to ever fill the role it's still very comforting to be able to place people and cosmic events in relation to others like this.
Citrus Latte
(In terrible 90's commercial cheese-y announcer) Back, for a limited time!
Jokes aside, I've been slowly getting settled into my new life. I won't go into details but my non-min-wage part-time job kind of got the ball rolling on me furthering my education to maybe get certified to do more work in that field, eventually. I've still got the min-wage food job and I'm attending courses as an in-person student for part of the week. Basically, I signed my life away for the foreseeable future, committed to having no days off unless it is a government-mandated holiday where the post-secondary institution is required to be closed and neither one of my jobs calls me in for such a day.
Trying to get used to my new life has taken a few weeks and it's been a grueling few weeks. Lots of nodding off in classes or in transit, napping between classes or trying not to fall asleep at my food-job. Trying (and failing) to go to bed earlier and try to be asleep before midnight. All that jazz.
Sleep is out of whack so I've been surviving on coffee. Doing my best to brew at home because prices on campus make me think that it isn't tuition or lack of working hours driving the 'broke student' trope. Seriously, a slice of pizza and a fountain drink together go for more than the standard minimum-wage on-campus. I refuse to support that kind of gouging so I've been committing to staying up until 2AM meal-prepping to ensure I can grab and go at 4AM to catch the first buses heading to my campus. No, my classes are not that early. But transit in my area leaves much to be desired and when the bus is scheduled to show up once every hour--and often skips two or three buses, a frazzled student's gotta do what they gotta do.
Today was one such day where I was running on coffee and panic. I'd forgotten to get my coffee stuff laid out for me to easily use in the morning so I scrambled to make anything that would be my sweet-treat drink of the day and settled on powdered iced-tea mix. It's got sugar and a bit of caffeine so I was hoping that it'd do the job. 4AM, off to catch a bus that may or may not show up.
By around 3PM I was flagging after having basically chugged the iced-tea in hopes the sugar would revitalize me. When I nodded off in my class I knew I had to take drastic action, so I ran down to the nearest coffee shop and committed to paying way-too-much for a hit of the good stuff. I got some Caramel Latte concoction or something and it was divine. I went and attended my last class of the day while trying to ration that precious water of awakefulness.
Our last class decided to let out early so we wound up being done around 5PM. I had plans to rush home, deal with what I had to deal with, and maybe hit sleep-ville by 8PM.
As I was packing up my school stuff, classmates kept on approaching me. Some to chat casually. Others to ask me for help proof-reading their assignments or to ask about a specific section of the lecture that they couldn't hear very well and were hoping to compare notes with mine (I'm considered a keener and open about trying to help everyone pass the course so people approach me often). While I normally don't mind this kind of interaction 'cuz the more of us that pass, the less I have to worry about making friends in future semesters…today just wasn't my day.
For those that do not know what a Latte is…here it's basically a shot of espresso with the rest of the cup filled with milk. A shot is not a lot of liquid so probably only 1/8th of my cup was coffee and caramel and the rest was all milk.
Milk normally doesn't play nice with my guts anyway, but today the milk had trickled into a system completely saturated with lemon-y, sugary tea. My guts were cramping and twisting like an angry viper for the last 10 minutes of class and I was in a hurry trying to pack up my things to beat a hasty retreat before my stomach decided to void itself by any means necessary.
I stayed behind to chat with a few classmates, not wanting to be rude, but the second all my stuff was in my bag I basically booked it out of the room and down the stairs.
My stomach hurt so, so, so, so bad!
I nearly tumbled down four levels of stairs because my stomach hurt so bad and I just wanted to curl up and rub it…or rip it all out to get rid of the problem completely. Plans to rush home were immediately dashed and I bolted in the hopes of finding a less busy washroom.
I had started the day out on an upset stomach. Stress, lack of sleep--etc. In the morning, I'd had the sense to find a washroom hidden in a corner of campus that had no classrooms (just an out-of-use office) so that washroom basically experienced zero traffic and likely only ever saw single-digit visitors throughout the course of an entire day. I got to use it in peace in the morning.
Unfortunately for me, my last class of the day was diagonally opposite that secluded washroom and my cramping tummy was making it very clear that it would not let me clear campus. I ended up rushing into one of the more busy washrooms and doing my business there. I definitely stayed there longer than I needed to just to wait for a lull when the washroom would be empty so that I could beat an exit without anyone giving me weird looks.
I ended up getting home maybe an hour and a half later than I'd planned because transferring on transit amplifies wait-times. Being 10 minutes late to the first bus you take snowballs into having to wait another 40-50 minutes for the next one, which snowballs into waiting 20 minutes for the next transfer, which snowballs into 20-40 minutes for the last transfer--and that's my route to and from campus…so…like…being in the washroom for an extra 10 minutes has a domino effect on timing.
I'm home now. Luckily, my stomach didn't embarrass me on the ride home. I got home, rushed around my place trying to get things in order. I've let laundry pile up for three weeks, haven't put away my socks or whatevers, and needed to sort out clean from dirties and figure out which items had to be hand-washed and air-dried. Once I got all those stressors out of the way and finally allowed myself to sit down, I finally had the mental capacity to pay attention to my body. My stomach is hurting again.
Send me your best responses? My stomach's been upset all day and chugging lemon-tea and following that up with a latte that most definitely curdled going through my citrus-y guts has done it zero favors. Any ideas on what to do to the mess that is my achy tummy?
Could you tell us about the witch and witch hunter fic!
Well, like many other of my ideas, it started when I watched a review for a book that executed the witch x witch hunter premise (I think) badly. So naturally, I went "I can do it better!" only to take the very basic premise and run with it.
The idea is that Valtor was "raised" (read: held captive (just like Rapunzel)) by a witch (Belladonna) until he killed her and completed a ritual that transferred her ability to do magic to him. However, he wouldn't be classified as a witch but as a demon instead due to the specifics of the ritual. He became a witch hunter because he wanted to get rid of the other members of Belladonna's coven. However, looking into it, it turned out to be a huge, international organization that is constantly recruiting new members by making use of the current political climate.
Because of the Coven, all witches are perceived as a threat so witch hunting is completely out of control. The Coven only pours oil into the fire to force more and more witches to seek the protection that only they can grant and thus expand and become even more powerful. There are few independent witches that haven't joined them yet and they're all in hiding to avoid being executed.
Because of the reach and scope of the Coven, Valtor figured he cannot destroy them alone. He will need more resources so he decided to join the most openly witchphobic kingdom, which would be Eraklyon. He cannot stand Erendor but sacrifices have to be made for the sake of hia goal. He's pretending that his magic isn't dark and due to his efficiency, Samara is pretending to buy that even though some people in court are openly suspicious of him. However, despite his effectiveness, the Coven remains ever elusive.
Enter Griffin, who was on track to steal something important from Eraklyon (I haven't figured out all the details yet). She would have handled any other witch hunter but the uniqueness of Valtor's abilities proves to be too much for her and she gets captured. She gets offered a deal, however. The Crown has designed a new plan for infiltrating the Coven. Instead of getting burned at the stake, Griffin can choose to marry Valtor in order to act as his cover when they attempt to join the Coven's ranks. After all, a witch hunter would never marry a witch.
Griffin accepts, not so much for herself as much as because of her mother who's afflicted with a magical disease and needs intervention from Griffin's magic to continue living. That is a secret, however, that Griffin is trying to keep. She does marry Valtor and the two of them travel to Andros where they are supposed to get help from Crown Princess Layla and her own inside man that has already joined the Coven - Riven. The Coven is full of young magic users and is led by the Trix (who may or may not be possessed by the Ancestral Witches or are their reincarnations - I haven't decided yet).
I haven't figured out the rest yet but the Coven has plans for Domino's Dragon Fire (which incidentally, Valtor's power is identical to because the ritual he used to gain magic powers allowed him to pick any kind of power he wanted and he chose the one Belladonna was after - to spite her). Griffin and Valtor are, of course, going to fall in love over the course of their mission and uncover each other's secrets to leave them at a precarious position once the mission is over since it's unclear what Griffin's fate will be. No one promised her freedom after the end of the assignment. In fact, their most efficient witch hunter will be more useful without being married to a witch.
... I had kind of given up on this idea because I was having structural problems with it but... I think I just solved those while answering your question. Thanks for being interested in this premise, anon! You might have just helped me revitalize it! 🫶
Chikawa Week Day 1: Flower
Tumblr media
Reproduction of the Ranunculus Flower gifted to Amu-sensei by the KOT discord server for the Kono Oto Tomare! 10th anniversary.
I've spent a great deal of time thinking about what to do for Chikawa Week. I don't think my fanart is all that good and it takes me a chunk of time to make, and I can't write fanfics to save my life. Then it dawned on me that I don't have to do anything new at all. I just need to stick to my strengths. As it happens, I enjoy writing "essays". So for Chikawa Week, I will write one essay based on the prompt for the day!
The prompt for Day 1 is "Flower" and I couldn't think of anything better to get started. When you mention "Flower" when talking about "Kono Oto Tomare!", one cannot but think about the beautiful pink ranunculus Chika gifted to Satowa on the day of the Revitalization Concert.
In this essay, I would like to delve deeper into the symbolism and importance this flower has in Chika and Satowa's relationship.
For me, it all starts with Isaki, funnily enough. That week, Satowa had invited him to assist to the Revitalization Concert that would welcome her back into the Hozuki Clan. Chika, of course, was thrilled to go, but I'm afraid he was not aware of the etiquette involved in these kinds of events. Not too surprising, he is just a teenager, and it's not like he has ever had to go to an event where a certain dress code is needed. It's his first time, we have to cut him some slack!!
Thankfully, Isaki is there to help him out. We love an Aunt who knows her nephew has a big fat crush on the Hozuki Lady, and is willing to captain the Chikawa Ship for the day.
She first tells him he should dress adequately, and that under no circumstances should he present himself to her house empty-handed. Of course, Chika asks her what should he buy, then. And she suggests flowers. I find it endearing that Isaki is trying to educate Chika on chivalry, and in how a lady should be treated. Specially when you are someone important to her. And of course, she is being sneaky because we all know what a man gifting a woman his age (and not related to him) flowers means.
As awkward as Chika can be, he knows his Aunt speaks the truth, and he should trust her. That's why without more complaint, he stops by a flower shop before heading to the Hozuki Household.
At the flower shop, the Helmsman (or Helmswoman as it happens) of the Chikawa Ship for the day is waiting for him. The florist sees a doubtful teenager intensely looking at the flowers, and she understands she has an assignment to ace. And wow does she ace it.
I can only imagine that, in the beginning, Chika intended to buy flowers as a sort of "assignment". His aunt told him they were necessary and it was not like he was going to question that judgment, but he thought it was just a matter of picking whatever he first saw that looked okay, buying it, and going his merry way. And they are just flowers. They grow all over the place, how expensive can they be, right?
When he sees all the types of flowers and arrangements? Well, things just get complicated. Because what flowers should he buy then? Also, he is broke. Our helmswoman won't let that be an impediment, though. No, sir! She gently asks if he is searching for something, and Chika awkwardly replies "A bouquet". Worth noting, he stumbles over the word "bouquet", and it's so cute because you just know that's a word he hasn't used much, if at all, and he is already making an effort to get out of his comfort zone.
Now, the budget. As I said, Chika is broke. He is SO broke, he can't even buy a mini-bouquet. He has a measly 254 yens (equivalent to 1,70 USD) to his name.
Tumblr media
This will never NOT be funny.
Chika's financial situation won't deter our Helmswoman. She will see this through!
She offers him the option of buying a single flower. One with his thoughts and emotions on it. And unknowingly, at that moment, she turns what was an "assignment", into so much more. Because Chika immediately relates it to "Treasuring each sound".
He understands that one single flower might just hold the power to tell Satowa what he thinks and feels on her Special Day. And is not something that he should think about superficially.
However, there is challenge in transmiting his thoughts and emotions with one single flower. Very similar to "Treasuring each sound". But also, different. He is not versed in the "Flower Language". He finds it easier to communicate with music than with words! Not to worry, our Helmswoman is there to stir him in the right direction.
She asks him "What sort of girl is she, this girl who isn't your girlfriend". That is not an easy question to answer. It demands honesty and vulnerability. If you really want to give her the perfect flower, you have to be transparent, you can't gloss over things or tell half truths. You only have one chance to get your message across.
For the first time, Chika puts into words how he sees her. She is powerful and strong, yet sometimes surprisingly weak. The store clerk is sort of confused by the contradiction, yet it makes perfect sense. And it is a testament to their relationship. When he first met her, she put up a front, acting strong, refusing to ask for help and struggling to open herself to him and the koto club. But behind that mask, was fear. Fear of being left behind, of her sound harming others. When the clerk asks "Which is it?", he replies "Mostly strong, definitely". To him, who has seen her face her fears, and come up the victor, she is more powerful and dazzling than when she was trying to act like she was strong. A woman who shines her brigthest when she performs. "When she performs, she is amazingly cool". And then he adds "Always very awkward".
That is what knowing someone really is like. They have so many colors and shades to them, that is so very difficult to make a uniform statement about who they are. They can be strong yet weak, cool yet awkward. Chika doesn't only like Satowa's brightest colors, he finds all of her shades and tones charming and worth noting. He also sneaks in her "Huge chest". He couldn't let us forget he is just a growing boy, with blood in his veins.
"Is she cute? Or beautiful?", asks our invested florist. Chika falls silent, ruminating over the question. But how could he possibly choose one? How could he simply pick one of her tones? Satowa is "Both", he replies quietly. And our Helmswoman understands in that moment that this flower is not only meant to be given to a performer, or some kind of unreachable idol, but to the girl this boy loves, wether he knows it or not. The girl he finds most charming, admirable, but also wishes to protect.
Gifting a ranunculus, in the language of flowers, means "I find you dazzingly charming". Then you add the meaning of the color. Pink signifies love, romance, and gentle feelings. I highly doubt she told him that, though. I imagine she simply prepared the most beautiful pink ranunculus she could find, and gave it to him with a smile, knowing she had found the perfect flower, for the girl who is perfect for that boy.
And we know Satowa received the feelings and emotions that Chika's gift carried. Because even if she received countless bouquetes that day, there was one single single flower that wasn't given to her out of obligation, one single flower that was given to her with honest feelings of happiness for her returning to her family... One single flower that was meant for her, given by a boy who loves every shade and color that makes her who she is.
And so, Satowa framed the flower and hung it in the lobby. Because before going out to face a new day, she will have the reminder that there is a boy who admires her and wants her to do well. And when she comes home, there will be comfort waiting for her.
Without knowing it, Chika gave her "home" within one flower.
(ARTS346) Week 3 Progress
Feedback from Online Class, Thursday, January 23, 2025
Response from Professor Nace on Screen Design proposal: "My class used Artivive for the AR component of the project. I think you headed in a clearer direction today. There are probably thousands of stories to tell. I would suggest thinking about something that you want to talk about and maybe follow. Example, have you ever gone on the rice field tour at Brookgreen garden? It's amazing if you haven’t. it clearly tells the story of slavery in that area. Perhaps you follow a “slave or slave family” from that time to a more present impact that that culture had on the area. Real or factious characters. Or a sailor that was in the fishing industry. Or what it was like for young women then and now? I think you will have to make a story that people can see themselves in."
Basecamp Message Posted 1/27/2024: Many of you posted moodboards last week when I asked for storyboards. Storyboard is a sequence of events. A timeline, sometimes with images or images and words. Please be sure to be prepared with a storyboard tomorrow. Printed, ready to discuss.
Assigned Reading: The Weaving of Design & Community
Continuing the themes from the previous week's reading, this chapter discusses the idea of combining design and community to express your creative voice and make it heard through your work. One quote that resonates with me is: "It is about humanity, generosity, and characteristics innate to human beings that encourage us to try to make this a better world." (Heller, Steven; Vienne, Véronique. Citizen Designer: Perspectives on Design Responsibility (Function). Kindle Edition.) This statement perfectly encapsulates the importance of using design to strengthen and uplift your community, contributing positively to the world around you.
I can relate this idea to an initial concept I had for my semester-long project for the Process and Systems course: to help revitalize Flemington, New Jersey, by fostering collaboration with local businesses and the art scene. This town holds a special place in my heart, as it was only a 26-minute drive from my hometown, and I spent many formative years there. I have fond memories of attending church at St. Magdalen's, shopping at the local outlets (which included the now-demolished Liberty Village), going to various doctor appointments, and dining with relatives at local restaurants.
Unfortunately, Flemington has fallen into disrepair. The main street is nearly devoid of businesses, the historic buildings are in poor condition, and very few people stroll through the area anymore. During my last visit in November, I kept asking myself if there was a way I could help. I wanted to use my graphic design skills to give back to the town that helped shape who I am today. I envisioned helping it recover in a way similar to Frenchtown's revival, injecting new life into the area.
Initially, I scrapped this concept because I wasn't sure it fit the course criteria, and I lacked the ability to travel back and forth to gather visual imagery and conduct research. However, as I have struggled to form a personal connection to my Murrells Inlet project, I am considering revisiting the idea of helping Flemington, as it is very dear to my heart. I still have a deep love and nostalgia for the town and want to see it succeed in any way I can.
I plan to continue working on the Murrells Inlet project, but I need to decide whether to make this change sooner rather than later, especially since the Screen Design portion of this project is due on February 11th!
Taken from Webpage: Think of screen printing as similar to the RISO process!
Remember: RISO is transferring an image onto a thin stencil, called a master. This printing process is similar to screen-printing in the sense that ink is pushed through a prepared stencil.
Screenprinting is a process where ink is forced through a mesh screen onto a surface. Making certain areas of the screen impervious to printing ink creates a stencil, which blocks the printing ink from passing through the screen. The ink that passes through forms the printed image.
The main colors used in screen printing are cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK), which are considered the "four-color process" and allow for a wide range of colors to be reproduced by mixing them together
