New Warriors Vol. 1 #40-42:
New Warriors Vol. 1 #40-42: Mark Bagley and Darick Robertson deliver a gorgeous looking mega epic that takes the Warriors into space and levels up Dick Rider for a spinoff solo series. They actually hyped this story up and released it and Nova #1 in a Marvel Classics Collector's Pack in the 90's. I of course own that.

hercules x noh-varr, moondragon x phyla-vell and peter quill x rich rider x gamora, the mcu could never have a guardians of the galaxy this gay
(ok pete, rich and gamora isn't explicitly canon as far as i've read but it's heavily implied and pete has a previous poly relationship so there's precedent)

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
July 13th - Nova / Richard Rider
The Nova Corps were established as the defensive and exploratory militia of the technically advanced world, Xandar. The Xandarian Worldmind, an extremely sophisticated living supercomputer, provided the corps an unlimited energy supply known as ‘The Nova Force.’ When channeled through a specialized helmet, this energy allows for interstellar flight, enhanced strength, force field projection and energy blasts.
Despite the protection offered by The Nova Corps, Xandar was destroyed by the galactic menace called Zorr. The last remaining Nova fled through the cosmos ultimately coming to earth. Severely injured and near death, the last Nova passed on his helmet to a young earthling named Richard Rider. Rider tried the helmet on and was instantly imbued with the incredible power of the Nova Force.
Instructed by the Xandarian Worldmind, Rider engaged the sinister Zorr, ultimately defeating the villain. Returning to earth, Rider then used his newfound abilities to become the superhero known as Nova: the Human Rocket, battling numerous foes and later joining the young super-team called The New Warriors.
After many adventures on earth, Nova was called back into space to act as guardian to the newly reconstructed Xandar. He would go on to become involved in numerous battles throughout the cosmos. He would command the reformed Nova Corps and later fought in the dreaded Annihilation War. The new Nova Corps were all destroyed by the Annihilation Wave and The Worldmind transferred the entirety of the Nova Force into Rider, offering him the power necessary to defeat Anihilus and bring an end to the war.
Some time thereafter, Nova became involved in an adventure alongside the Guardians of The Galaxy where they sought to close the tear in space that provided a portal to the Cancerverse. The other dimensional realm threatened all life throughout the universe and Nova valiantly sacrificed himself in order to close the breach.
It turned out that Nova was not dead, but rather trapped in the strange limbo of the Cancerverse. He ultimately managed to escape with the aide of the new Nova, a young earthling named Sam Alexander. Rich and Sam would go on to have adventures together, but Rich has continued to struggle with the psychological effects of his time trapped in the Cancerverse.
The space-faring hero first appeared in the page of Nova Vol. 1 #1 (1976).
