Fine - 5/10

I’ll be honest, despite being a partial Tori main, I’m pretty neutral about Fine. They get points for representation of Theater Kids™, manipulative pretty boys, and Tori’s :3 face but as far as music goes, they’ve never really stood out to me.

Trickstar - 4/10

I actually really like Trickstar but I feel like out of all the bands in ES, they’re the ones who would have a “my mom sold me to 1Direction” fanfic written about them in-universe and for that they get points subtracted

Ryuseitai - 6/10

Unrivaled Meteor Ranger fucks hard and every member of this band has had a warrior cats phase but in extremely different ways. Chiaki probably kins Firestar. Kanata goes apeshit over the Sunningrocks debate. You get no further elaboration.

Alkaloid - 10/10

GRRRRGRRRBARK I LOVE ALKALOID #1 Alkaloid enjoyer right here if you don’t like Alkaloid gtfomp /j. The songs? SLAP. My moratorium? WINGED. Mayoi? IN THE WALLS.

Eden almost gets full points. Hiyojun. The biblical references mixed with EXTREMELY horny lyrics. ALL of them are hot.

HOWEVER: for the love of GOD they NEED to fire their choreographer I am BEGGING,,, what the fuck is That One Part in The Genesis (YOU KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT)

Valkyrie - 5/10

Look, I fucking LOVE Valkyrie. The songs go hard. I blast 'em all the time when I’m handed the AUX. If the band was just Mika (possibly also Nazuna?) then they would get full points, but I have a personal grudge against Shu for existing (top hat, manipulative but not pretty enough to get away with it, enjoys the French, the Nazuna situation) so he costs Valkyrie 5 entire points. 

2wink - 6/10

Their name just being [TWINK] makes me lose my shit but the fact that they’re secretly the angstiest fuckers in game gave me enough psychic damage to subtract 3 points. 1 additional point has been subtracted for those matching midparts.

Crazy:B - 7/10

Crazy:B never misses with their songs. -3 points for Rinne Amagi.

Okay you can tell I’m OBVIOUSLY biased towards emos but god. UNDEAD. They work really well together. As a chronically ill vampire kinnie Rei owns my heart and I love him. -2 points for being just a tad basic but overall very good

Hajime and Nazuna my beloved but Mitsuru and Tomoya look like they came directly from The Promised Neverland and I’m not an impartial judge so -6 for making me think about that show again

Knights - 7/10

They have some bops, but I’ll be honest most of their points come from the fact that Ritsu and Arashi are my blorbos I love them. -3 for the “Is He Bothering You, Queen?” vibes I’m hit with every time I hear Grateful Allegiance

Switch - -2000/10

They are magicians and they give gamer vibes and are therefore Untrustworthy. Also the shading on Natsume’s hand at the end of Emerald Planet makes me think of the hot dog hand people in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Perish.

You know as much as I love Trickstar I'm actually very behind on reading about them. I like Subahokke, but like... I don't feel very strongly about them as a ship. I like them as individual characters and I like them together. But I haven't really read any point where a detail about their relationship slammed me in the face yet. They definitely feel very platonic to me tho. Not in the sense that I don't see them having romantic feelings for each other ever, but in the sense that I don't think either of them are interested in a romantic relationship. I think they just enjoy being together and really like each other, which in a way is the ideal kind of partnership to me.

Ritsumao... Haha... I haven't read Band Ensemble yet. So I'll see if that slams me in the face and makes me change my mind. But right now, I only ship it when it's funny. But more generally...

I don't even mean that like I hate the ship or anything. They're clearly very important to one another and very canon. But they're also both very bad at boundaries. (This seems like a knights-trickstar specialty.) Mao is very bad at setting boundaries and Ritsu is... Ritsu...

I mean I think they're still young and have plenty of time to make mistakes. So I can see them getting together and breaking up and then later getting back together again when they're more mature. But for now whenever they interact I'm simultaneously *amused chuckle* and *pained groaning* and "man I can't wait for them to break up"

can you do Vi and Jinx with a S/O who has a Mao Isara personality from ensemble stars? Here’s the info…

Mao stands at a slightly shorter than average height and has light green eyes. He has red-violet hair that is tied back from the bangs in a small ponytail, fastened with a yellow clip. His hair reaches down to his chin and is styled somewhat messily.

On stage, Mao wears Trickstar's uniform, which includes a red plaid jacket worn over a white shirt and black pants. The jacket’s sleeves are rolled up to three-quarter length, revealing black cuffs with a golden stripe. The lapels as well as the collar and shoulders of the jacket are black, detailed with golden trimming on the edges. Golden tassels fall from his left shoulder. On his right, golden bands connect his shoulder to a four-pointed star on his lapel. He wears a magenta belt, with the end of it falling over as it has not been properly tucked into a belt loop. A red bandana hangs from his belt and drapes down at his right side. It has a black stripe along the bottom and is dotted with tiny silver sparkles. Over that, a golden beaded chain rests on his hips. An outlined star design is attached to the chain as it hangs on his right side. A thick red stripe runs along the sides of his pant legs, with the ends being tucked into his high-top sneakers. The sneakers are black and grey with red detailing, including a Velcro strap over his magenta laces. Mao wears a black fingerless glove on his right hand and magenta and white bangles on his right. He also wears a gold necklace of a four-pointed star— a reference to the four members of Trickstar.

He is usually very friendly and outgoing to anyone he talks to, although he also acts as the rational mediator when things are getting too out of hand. Mao also readily accepts most work, even if it goes beyond what he's physically capable of doing alone. Although this passionate, hard-working attitude is one of his strong suits, many of his faults lie in it as well.

Due to this behavior, Mao tends to let himself get walked over, as he never wants to let people down or fail to meet their expectations. His feeling of wanting to be good enough for everyone heavily affects his self-esteem, and when his abilities are challenged or seen as replaceable, it leaves him in a rough state of insecurity, sadness, and/or makes him feel that he is not the "strong" child everyone expects him to be.

For this reason, he often keeps his own feelings locked away out of fear of burdening people or making them worry, though he truly is thankful when people worry for him. However, this also causes him to be sensitive to others when they're feeling the same way, and if he can, will attempt to lighten their burden by holding it on his own shoulders. He has a habit of being quite a pessimist, having low self esteem.

In contrast to his nice and reliable persona, Mao can also be blunt and quite rude, often seen in his interactions with Izumi, and his early conversations with Anzu. He describes himself as someone who works behind the scenes and takes on the dirty work, but has mentioned there are times that he loves being in the spotlight, and that being an idol and receiving everyone's attention makes him very happy[1].

He is very self-sufficient and often helps gather information for Trickstar and helps them out from behind the scenes, to the point that he acted much like a producer to his own unit prior to Anzu's arrival. He has commented on himself being much alike the "bass in a band"—difficult to notice, but the pillars that hold things together. He is easily embarrassed, and can quickly feel awkward with Ritsu's over-affectionate behavior, and gets overly concerned with how he behaves around Anzu. Overall, Mao is naturally a mood-lifting and supportive kind of person, and will always do his best to help and watch his friends succeed.

- at first she doesn’t understand why someone as perfect as you could have insecurities in the first place, so when you tell her or she picks up on your weird behavior or how you’d go off topic when its brought up, that’s when she realizes.

- she tries to do and say things that she thinks will rid of that insecurity. it’s usually harmless jokes about random people or kisses on the so-called-impurity. as tempted as she is to do so, she won’t go around boasting about how pretty, handsome, or good at something you are both for your comfort and she doesn’t want people to take you from her for themselves.

- if there ever comes a time where you feel as though you’re not good enough, she’d be quick to tell you otherwise—telling you about how happy you make her and how much of a miracle you are to her. she loves you to death but wouldn’t want you to die, or leave.

- she completely understands, but also doesn’t see why you’d think of it as a flaw. she’d most likely try to talk about it to see what or who made you think down about yourself in anyway.

- she has insecurities and she’d be kind of willing to share them with you in hopes of making you feel better, but she prefers physically showing how much you’re appreciated and admired for all that you do, even if it’s just from her, she hopes it means the world to you.

- if you for whatever reason feel as though you’re not enough, she’s quick to strike down such an idea. the thought won’t even be able to cross your mind whenever she’s near—which is always. she’d be willing to do whatever you need to make you feel as though your enough because you’re more than enough to her.

SONG OF THE GARBAGE DUMP: A SHUNAZU CRASH COURSE

the (always forgotten) Nazuna perspective:

No good at talking, no good at sports, average even if he tries his best, only ever given praise for his looks, which leaves him feeling not angry, not confused ... just empty. Nito Nazuna introduces himself before he met Itsuki Shu as an unsatisfied, stagnated person who yearns to be liked, yearns for "a perfect life" - and it quite literally lands into his arms when a boy jumps out the window for him, calling him humanity's greatest work of art. For the first time ever, Nazuna feels something at the praise he receives. He basks in it. He, who wasn't good at anything, doesn't even need to do anything special to be the center of someone's universe - he only needs to put his life into that person's hands and dance as he was told to, and they live in their perfect little orderly world. Right?

And yet, Nazuna is unsatisfied. 'Stagnation' is a major and very interesting theme in Valkyrie stories. "The beating of my heart has stopped as well. Ah, and yet it doesn't hurt at all! I don't feel anything - nothing at all!" says Nazuna in a metaphorical nightmare about his life where ex-Valkyrie physically turn into dolls. Stagnation in Valkyrie is always painless - even Mika speaks of being a doll as a "painless salvation" in his solo - it's moving forward that's painful. It's humanity that hurts. Nazuna wants to move forward from his stagnation. Shu is terrified of it. The discord between them is symbolically portrayed through Nazuna's voice changing, and Shu's dissatisfaction with it - Nazuna wants to grow up, but Shu wants to keep playing house forever. This is the moment when Nazuna begins to see Shu as the stagnated one rather than himself, and the distance between them starts growing. This is very nicely portrayed through a church metaphor in human comedy. "I went to church not to hear the word of God, but to get cookies. But eventually the taste of cookies became too sweet for me, so I stopped going." I'm paraphrasing, but this is what Nazuna says in Human Comedy. The church is his relationship with Shu - which he indulges in not because he's in love with Shu like Shu is in love with him, but to get the praise he yearns for to get that feeling of being someone and something. Eventually, though, the relationship turns "too sweet" for him (we have this same metaphor with Ritsu and Mao in Band Ensemble so we can guess it means one party got too serious about the, khm, romantic aspect of the relationship.) But Nazuna isn't entirely selfish. He still likes Shu, he might even love him as he said in Star Festival, so he sticks around... until...

until Shu is trampled over by Eichi. Which leads us to the titular sub story, Song of the garbage dump.

Song of the garbage dump shows us Shu in the state of a complete breakdown, unable to even communicate. And in that state, Nazuna not only leaves him, but also urges Mika to leave him: "Even if you're with Itsuki, you won't get anything more from it. Even you've realized it, haven't you? Itsuki - our oshi-san - he's become useless." he says to Shu's face. He finally identified Shu as the source of his stagnation, and discarded him at the lowest point of his life - which is something people always, always seem to ignore.

In conclusion, Nazuna was a marionette, yes, but rather than Shu, he was puppeteered around by his own feeling of inferiority. He will eventually grow out of it, but his development with rabbits is material for another post. What matters is that he'd never been a passive participant in his relationship with Shu, despite the way he physically acts - his desires were in fact the driving force of it, and especially it's break up.

the (always misunderstood) Shu perspective:

I won't explain the entire relationship from Shu's perspective again, but I will address the two most important things: what does humanity mean to Shu? and what do dolls mean to Shu?

While it's never explicitly stated that Shu's family and peers severely abused him in childhood, his flashbacks, his disorder, the way he speaks about his mother and above all his dirtied view of humanity more than suggest it. While talking to Mika, Shu explains humanity like this: the impulse to hurt and kill a loved one against all reason. He even tells Mika to kill him in order to invoke feelings of humanity in him. I know... on the other hand, dolls are his saviors. Much like how he's grown to associate his abuse with the concept of humanity, Shu associates everything pure and good with the image of dolls (and children, precisely for resembling dolls.) Dolls will not hurt him, nor will they feel pain - which is exactly why he is stuck in a state of painless stagnation. When Shu sought to turn the people he loves, Nazuna and later Mika, into dolls, he didn't seek to control them, but to absolve them of the filth of humanity. He never sought to become a doll himself, but to save others from the hurt he'd already experienced. Was it healthy? Of course not. But was it selfish?
