At the outset of H. G. Wells's The War of the Worlds (1898), Wells asks his English readers to compare the Martian invasion of Earth with the Europeans' genocidal invasion of the Tasmanians, thus demanding that the colonizers imagine themselves as the colonized, or the about-to-be-colonized. But in Wells this reversal of perspective entails something more, because the analogy rests on the logic prevalent in contemporary anthropology that the indigenous, primitive other's present is the colonizer's own past. Wells's Martians invading England are like Europeans in Tasmania not just because they are arrogant colonialists invading a technologically inferior civilization, but also because, with their hypertrophied brains and prosthetic machines, they are a version of the human race's own future.
The confrontation of humans and Martians is thus a kind of anachronism, an incongruous co-habitation of the same moment by people and artifacts from different times. But this anachronism is the mark of anthropological difference, that is, the way late-nineteenth-century anthropology conceptualized the play of identity and difference between the scientific observer and the anthropological subject-both human, but inhabiting different moments in the history of civilization. As George Stocking puts it in his intellectual history of Victorian anthropology, Victorian anthropologists, while expressing shock at the devastating effects of European contact on the Tasmanians, were able to adopt an apologetic tone about it because they understood the Tasmanians as "living representatives of the early Stone Age," and thus their "extinction was simply a matter of … placing the Tasmanians back into the dead prehistoric world where they belonged" (282-83). The trope of the savage as a remnant of the past unites such authoritative and influential works as Lewis Henry Morgan's Ancient Society (1877), where the kinship structures of contemporaneous American Indians and Polynesian islanders are read as evidence of "our" past, with Sigmund Freud's Totem and Taboo (1913), where the sexual practices of "primitive" societies are interpreted as developmental stages leading to the mature sexuality of the West. Johannes Fabian has argued that the repression or denial of the real contemporaneity of so-called savage cultures with that of Western explorers, colonizers, and settlers is one of the pervasive, foundational assumptions of modern anthropology in general. The way colonialism made space into time gave the globe a geography not just of climates and cultures but of stages of human development that could confront and evaluate one another.
The anachronistic structure of anthropological difference is one of the key features that links emergent science fiction to colonialism. The crucial point is the way it sets into motion a vacillation between fantastic desires and critical estrangement that corresponds to the double-edged effects of the exotic. Robert Stafford, in an excellent essay on "Scientific Exploration and Empire" in the Oxford History of the British Empire, writes that, by the last decades of the century, "absorption in overseas wilderness represented a form of time travel" for the British explorer and, more to the point, for the reading public who seized upon the primitive, abundant, unzoned spaces described in the narratives of exploration as a veritable "fiefdom, calling new worlds into being to redress the balance of the old" (313, 315). Thus when Verne, Wells, and others wrote of voyages underground, under the sea, and into the heavens for the readers of the age of imperialism, the otherworldliness of the colonies provided a new kind of legibility and significance to an ancient plot. Colonial commerce and imperial politics often turned the marvelous voyage into a fantasy of appropriation alluding to real objects and real effects that pervaded and transformed life in the homelands. At the same time, the strange destinations of such voyages now also referred to a centuries-old project of cognitive appropriation, a reading of the exotic other that made possible, and perhaps even necessary, a rereading of oneself.

26th July 1943. Medal of Honor action of 2nd Lt John ‘Red’ Morgan, a B-17 co-pilot with the 326th BS of the 92nd Bomb Group. Rejected for military service in America due to previously breaking his neck, he had instead joined the RCAF and ultimately flew 12 missions as a Flight Sergeant with RAF Bomber Command. Morgan transferred to the USAAF in March 1943 and was now flying his fifth combat mission with the Eighth Air Force, a raid against Hanover.
As the bombers reached the German coast, they were met by Luftwaffe fighters. Morgan’s B-17, ‘Ruthie II’, came under heavy attack from Focke-Wulf 190s and was badly damaged. The oxygen system to the rear fuselage was knocked out along with the intercom, while the top turret gunner had his arm severed by a cannon shell. He was found bleeding to death on the fuselage floor by the navigator, who bailed him out of the aircraft, an action which saved his life. Found and treated by the Germans, he was repatriated in 1944.
Meanwhile, a frontal attack had smashed the cockpit windscreen and a machine gun bullet inflicted a severe brain injury on the pilot, Lt Robert Campbell. He reflexively gripped the control column as he slumped forwards, putting the B-17 into a dive. Through sheer strength, Morgan managed to heave the aircraft back into formation. He was fought for control all the time by the semiconscious pilot, who even physically attacked his copilot due to the effects of his fractured skull.
Morgan couldn’t hear firing from any of the gunners behind him and believed they had bailed out or been killed. In fact, they were all unconscious through lack of oxygen. Believing that it would be more dangerous to turn back, he opted to continue with the formation. As the navigator and bombardier manned the nose guns against continued attacks, for up to two hours Morgan flew the B-17 with one hand, while fighting off Campbell with the other, as he continued his attempts to wrest control of the aircraft from him. He could have severed the pilot’s oxygen supply to render him unconscious, but feared this would kill him.
Finally, as fighter attacks eased, the navigator was able to leave his gun and secured Campbell in the nose with the help of the bombardier. With Morgan now firmly in control, the B-17 reached Hanover, dropped its bombs and returned safely to make an emergency landing at RAF Foulsham, with barely any fuel left in the tanks. Campbell’s injuries proved fatal and he died shortly after the landing, while the five men in the rear fuselage knocked out through oxygen starvation had all survived, though with varying degrees of frostbite. They had regained consciousness as the aircraft descended on the outward flight.
Awarded the Medal of Honor in December 1943, Morgan was promoted and given the option of going home, but continued to fly combat sorties. On 6th March 1944, his H2X radar-equipped B-17 was flying as a formation lead aircraft on a mission to Berlin when it took a direct flak hit over the target. Morgan grabbed a parachute, but hadn’t had time to fasten it before the aircraft exploded. He was in freefall for an estimated 20,000 feet as he struggled to clip the pack to his chest, succeeding with around 500 feet to spare.
Captured almost immediately, Morgan spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft I, the only Medal of Honor winner to become a prisoner of war after receiving the award. He saw service again in Korea, flying cargo aircraft when denied a combat assignment. Ending his Air Force career in the Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel, he died in 1991.

Discharge Petition for H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Record Group 233: Records of the U.S. House of RepresentativesSeries: General Records
This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Emanuel Celler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, attempted to use this discharge petition to move the bill out of committee without holding hearings. Reading This Week 2024 #33
As warned, I come to you a day late because I was out of my house from 7:20am to 9:20pm. That time out was planned but also along the way my car battery died so I've sent it to the shop to get it looked at
I've really been in the zone with audiobooks this week, and I also worked on reading through the comic books I've had languishing on my shelf
Finished:
Blue Box, Vol. 1 by Kouji Miura, translated by Christine Dashiell cute manga about some students at a very sports focused high school, badminton playing boy protagonist with a HUGE crush on basketball playing upperclassman girl. pretty cute, great art
Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg I am so glad that my library system had a physical copy of the 20th anniversary edition. It felt like an honor to hold this book in my hand. As expected, I cried at several points reading this. I have to say though, the mythos that has sprung up around this book (on tumblr but I'm sure elsewhere) as a Lesbian Book really really undersells how much this book's perspective is just as much if not more Working Class. it's a book about labor and difficulty making ends meet while butch: Jess' decision to pass as a man is certainly a gender-identity based decision but crucially it is also a financial one in hopes of getting a better job. Anyway. read the actual book
Remina by Junji Ito, translated by Jocelyn Allen read to keep up with Shelved by Genre. didn't like this one
Boys Weekend by Mattie Lubchansky recommended by a friend, graphic novel where a transfem attends the bachelor party of their old college buddy while the casino town they're in is taken over by a tech-startup-cult
The Empire of Gold by S.A. Chakraborty, narrated by Soneela Nankani okay yeah I spent like the last 2 hours of the audiobook jumping up and down my hallway. this was pretty rad, thanks for the rec dad. if you, like me, are put off by the YA characterization vibes in the first book, the characters do grow up
only fooling yourself by volefriend on ao3
System Collapse by Martha Wells, narrated by Kevin R. Free the murderbot diaries are always great
Jonny Appleseed by Joshua Whitehead, narrated by the author recommended to me by a friend! interesting and matter of fact perspective on racialized sex work from a two-spirit person
The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood, narrated by Nicolette McKenzie I'm going to come clean, I read this because I forgot the title of The Thursday Murder Club. however I really enjoyed this band of middle aged and older british ladies becoming friends and solving murders
Good Deeds #1-2 written by Che Grayson, art by Kelsey Ramsay, colors by Ronda Pattison comic about a small Florida town with unsettling supernatural stuff happening. I will be tracking down the other issues
Washed in the Blood #1 written by Kevin Roditeli, art by Rob Cannon, Kostas Pantoulas, and Vivi Ekhart the art and the lettering in this comic is crazy fun, but the story might be too "ooh so edgy" for me. I'll keep an eye out for the other issues but wont prioritize it
Crashing #1-3 written by Matthew Klein, art by Morgan Beem, colors by Triona Farrell miniseries focused on a doctor treating superpowered patients. absolutely going to find the other two issues of it, I need to see where this ends
What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher sequel to What Moves the Dead. it wasn't as good as the first one but it was still pretty enjoyable horror
Started/Ongoing:
The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, narrated by Michael Page so excited to be reading this for the sff bookclub. too clever for their own good con man scoundrels are a favored character type of mine
Invisible Kingdom, Vol. 1: Walking the Path written by G. Willow WIlson, art by Christian Ward scifi comic that looked cool! a comic book shop employee recommended it to a friend, and I remembered I'd seen it at my library so I picked it up to check out (gorgeous scifi art)
little warrior by kathkin on ao3 read the next chapter :)
chapter 9 of follow the sun by verdantstars on ao3 new chapter out of a fire emblem three houses fic i like!
DNFs:
The Collected Poems of Audre Lorde this is hopefully just a temporary dnf. it was due back at the library and i did not have time to finish reading it before then. with any luck I'll check it out again when i have a bit more poetry reading motivation
Ragnarok by A.S. Byatt, narrated by Harriet Walter
Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li, narrated by Eunice Wong and Austin Ku
Reading Plans:
obviously The Lies of Locke Lamora is on my reading plan list bc its the sff book club pick for september! and I'll be reading Sensor to keep up with Shelved by Genre
other books I have out from the library and want to try out but may not finish reading: Bloom Into You Vol. 2 by Nakatani Nio, The Sprite and the Gardener by Rii Abrego and Joe Whitt, Female Husbands: A Trans History by Jen Manion, narrated by Kate Harper, The River of Silver by S.A. Chakraborty, narrated by Soneela Nankani
and I want to read more of the books that exist on my physical bookshelves. some of that I've been doing by borrowing the audiobook versions of them (like Jonny Appleseed and System Collapse above) but others dont have that option

My Disenchanted thoughts
I know this blog is called alescendants but Disenchanted is still Disney and it makes sense to write my opinions on it here. These are my personal opinions, everyone is entitled to have their own thoughts on this movie.
I wrote a lot so it’s all hiding under the readmore:
PROS
Finally, we know why Giselle was living with animals in the woods!
Morgan calling Giselle ‘Mom’ was so pure ngl
Seeing Giselle, Robert, Edward, and Nancy all being friends years later was so sweet, and the latter two being Sofia’s godparents? My heartt 😭😭
And finally Nancy sings! I keep repeating “For through this wand from Andalasia flows the magic of our magic world to here”, and also Love Power obviously lol
"Congratulations on the increasing size of your progeny." and "Hogwashery!" in this film vs "I don't know what ‘melodramatic’ means" in the first film. Bless you, Edward, you're academic now and I am so proud of you
“Morgan, if you want to be mad, you be mad at me. But you do not talk to your mother like that!” >>>
Robert is the blueprint for all men I swear
Morgan hating the move is all the better when you remember Robert said she’s shy and doesn’t have many friends. I feel you, Morgan, I suck at making friends too 😀🤝
I don’t get why people don’t like the music, I loved all of it! It saved the movie imo.
Maya Rudolph can SINGGGGGGGG
“Nobody ever would bother to tell a tale with Maleficent and with Cruella.” That was good honestly.
Gabriella Baldacchino is so good in this! She can really sing, good for her.
CONS
Everyone saying ‘the whole cast is back’ when Nathaniel wasn't in the movie (as well as Narissa for obvious reasons) felt very weird and wrong to me
Why was Edward barely in the movie?? His himbo energy is a big part of makes the first film so great imo, and while he did steal the three scenes he was in (yes, three), he deserved to be in the movie more. Also this is a personal issue but I hate how he’s never called ‘King Edward’, as I was hoping his Disney Wiki page would be able to be retitled to that lmao. His name is King Edward of Andalasia, put some respect on his name.
And I was hoping he’d have a scene with Morgan detailing his own experiences with wicked stepmothers. But he and Nancy were missing for the whole middle act 😭, AND James Marsden deserved to sing more!
Robert too. Why did they make him an idiot knight? He’s not endearing like Edward, he just annoyed me. And they obviously kept him out of most of the film because True Love’s Kiss would undo Giselle’s wish. It pissed me off how nobody thought of doing that lmao
“We bring love from Andalasia and offer belated birthday cheer.” That was in the trailer, they filmed a part for it. It and the rest of the lyrics are in the official Spotify song, so why was it cut out of the film? So unnecessary.
Same with the Monroeville portion of the opening song, it should’ve been kept in.
The 2D animation sucks, and why did Nancy look so different? She and Idina both don’t have blue eyes, where did that even come from?
I wanted Giselle to go back to Andalasia and for Robert to go there period. We need to fully see how he looks in 2D and how Giselle changed.
And I dislike the implication that Giselle has never returned to Andalasia and shown Robert and Morgan where she grew up. As IF she’d never say goodbye to the animals who raised her. And since Morgan always asked for stories about Andalasia, why not TAKE her there? Literally what is stopping her? It’s bad writing.
And speaking of Morgan, yes teens are angsty but it still hurt to see her fight with Giselle (their relationship in the first movie is precious).
And I’m confused about the whole wicked stepmother thing? “It’s not true what they say, I have met so many kind and wonderful stepmothers.” What happened to that?
But ignoring that, Morgan calling Giselle her stepmother in the argument hurt bad. Because she knows how Giselle (apparently) feels about stepmothers and she was obviously trying to hurt her.
Giselle could’ve done her animal call and it either doesn’t work or ravens and other animals portrayed as villains (snakes, rats like in Lady and the Tramp) show up. That’d fuck her up and it’d be cool to watch! And Morgan sang the animal call in pt 2 of Fairytale Life, she should’ve done it for real.
Malvina was disappointing. I was expecting her to be an Andalasian who Narissa banished, like Giselle. Maybe they’re related (like Ursula and Morgana) and/or she was threatened by her magical competition so she sent her away. And with a name with Malvina, it made sense to me that she’d be Andalasian. Clearly that was the intention and I don’t get why the team behind the movie would trick the audience like that bc it’s the opposite of a good plot twist. Queen Narissa had way less screen time and I prefer her way better.
Plus it’d keep Narissa relevant to the plot which was not the case and I was deeply disappointed.
I predicted that with Monroeville’s slogan literally being “Your Fairy Tale starts here!”, it’d be designed by Malvina to be a trap for Andalasians to find out how they left Andalasia and if she can take their portal back there. Like there was so much potential that went wasted.
And where the hell is Malvina’s husband? (He’s on the billboard with Malvina and Tyson at the entrance of Monroeville, so he definitely existed at one point.) If he’s dead, at least just mention it once?
Why was Morgan and Tyson’s song cut? It’d give him + their relationship much needed development and it’s a cute song.
Rosaleen and Ruby were annoying. I love YNB and Jayma but their characters aggravated me.
Sofia crying after Morgan was pushed down the well could’ve been a chance for Giselle to break away from her evil self to care for her daughter. I thought that’d happen. We all did, right?
There’s probably more but I’ll stop here lol
