The film Yagiyama produced to waterboard Yasuho is technically something Rock Humans as a species could do, technically, but it's more of a latent ability, and takes a bit to learn. And it kinda hurts.

i don’t mean to be an ‘araki forgot’ kind of guy but when this statement is pasted over:

aisho dainenjiyama, who lost everything he had because he loved and trusted his girlfriend. he was rescued by yotsuyu and expresses missing and wanting to avenge his friend

yotsuyu yagiyama, who empathized with aisho and helped him recover and find a place in society when he was left destitute and heartbroken

dolomite, who sacrificed his body for his lover (who he still holds earnest affection towards and wants to see again)

it all seems very contradictory to the message given of rock humans being individualists who cannot form meaningful relationships. while some rock humans are pretty bad (the research dept. is far nastier than the cartel), this may reveal a shifting focus over the 10 long years of jojolion’s serialization.

i think there was a clear change in direction when it comes to ‘what Araki intended for rock humans to be.’ in ch. 99, the same chapter the top screencap comes from, we also get a revised version of the rock human life cycle. this one describes how rock mothers abandon their young in the wilderness, how rock infants cling onto wasps like parasites and mature on their own, and how they learn about the world in their hive before abruptly growing and destroying their nest - emphasising their harsh and independent nature as a species.

simply put, araki changed his mind about rock humans and their role in society and, as the story progressed, presented them more as ruthless individualists

Sometimes I think about how the entire history of the advancement of human weapons can be boiled down to: “we found more elaborate ways to hit things with rocks…”

Spears? Sharpened rocks.

Slingshot? Ranged rocks.

Arrows? Sharpened rocks with range.

Hammers/Clubs? Refined rocks.

Swords/axes? Sharpened refined rocks.

Guns? Sharpened, refined rocks, propelled by explosives…

We discovered how to make explosives, and we fine tuned that technology to better propel refined and sharpened rocks at insane distances… we are still hitting things with rocks… we just became experts in the science of hitting things with rocks… The human race is basically just a “dump everything into geology” build…
