Rooooound display prototype testing 🌀✨

Okay, we've got our 1.3" round TFT prototype ready for testing - and here's a cute GIF of a dial turning back and forth. It's a great way to test the display, backlight, and SD card interface. We're using a QT Py ESP32 since we need quite a bit of oomph to decode GIFs and display them in real-time. With EYESPI, no wiring is required! This is good to go - it's time to book the PCB panel!

Round display EYESPI tester is a go! 👁️🔍

This 1.3" round TFT display will be in the shop soon, thanks to this tester, which lets us quickly verify all functionality: We're reading a display bitmap off of the SD card, displaying it, and then pulsing the backlight. We do this all through the EYESPI connector https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=eyespi and this one is passing just fine. After we package the display, we can stock it in the shop!

Festival of Lights - 1.28" Round TFT display 🔵🎉

To wrap up this year, we're doing 8 days of light-filled designs. We started with the Sparkle Motion Mini

which can drive thousands of shimmering RGB LEDs. Then, we did the Sparkle Motion stick, a USB-pluggable version. Today, we're taking a detour into some very old designs we've been meaning to do for years! Starting with this 1.28" round TFT display that has 240x240 shiny IPS pixels. We have a round outline, two mounting holes, breakout pads for all the control and power pins, plus an EYESPI connector

Festival of Lights - Night #8 Tiny Round 0.7" TFT Display 💡🎉

It's the last night of our "Festival of Lights" mega design fest—to wrap up this year, we're doing eight days of light-filled designs!

We started with the Sparkle Motion Mini

) which can drive thousands of shimmering RGB LEDs. Then, we did the Sparkle Motion stick, a USB-pluggable version (

). On the third night, a 1.28" round TFT display (

), and on the fourth, a 1.8" round TFT with captouch overlay (

). On the fifth night, a tiny 0.85" TFT display (

) came to life. We took a little break on the sixth night since we were doing a lot of Sparkle Motion testing (

) and did a quick revision of our NeoRGB (

) The seventh night was a transparent OLED display with 128x64 pixels and an I2C interface. (

Tonight - the candles are burned out, the donuts are all eaten, and the final prototype PCB is booked! This is a mini breakout for a tiny 0.7" round TFT display with 160x160 pixels. What is this, a display for ants? We couldn't fit a micro SD card socket on the back, but we did get an EYESPI socket on there, and 0.1" spaced breakout pads with all the necessary connections, plus a regulator and level shifter. Whew, we're going to bed - Happy New Year!!!

Testing ESP programmer board, working on 3.5" Captouch TFT with new ST7796S display & FT6236 touch chips. Board needs redesign for new FPC. Got exciting screen samples (round/bar/rect). Also found great ultra-fine tweezers on DigiKey, for both engineers & entomologists! 🔬🐛🐜

This night, we're taking a little bit of a breather since we want to do final testing and hopefully send out the Sparkle Motion PCBs

So, we're doing a quick revision of the NeoRGB Stemma board

This time, we're adding a level shifter so it can be used with 3.3V logic. It's just a small fix, but it will make the board a lot more usable!

👁️ First glimpse on the ESP32-S3 Qualia with our new round displays! Perfect for huge eyes. Progress with porting the M4_Eyes code to Qualia ESP32-S3. Check the first blinks here 🔗 . For quick development, we're on platformio but it's Arduino-friendly. Some tweaks needed for 480x480 display but we're getting there. Every blink counts! 🖥️🔧📈

To wrap up this year, we're doing 8 days of light-filled designs. We started with the Sparkle Motion Mini

Today, we're doing another TFT display, this time a 360x360 pixel IPS TFT that is also round and comes with a captouch display. we're going with SMT headers for breadboard-friendly usage and EYESPI for a compact connection. since we think folks may want a compact mounting solution, we put some SMT nuts on the back so the display PCB is perfectly round.

On the penultimate night and New Year's Eve, we're making a quick Qwiic board—this is an I2C breakout for transparent OLED displays. We've had the display in our 'in progress' bin for a few years but finally sat down to finish it tonight. We're experimenting with a wrap-around setup for the FPC and a cutout for the display for mounting. We'll see how it goes!

. we've over the hump and still going strong! Tonight, we did a 0.85" TFT breakout; it's 128x128 pixels and so tiny we had to put the breakout pads on opposite sides.
