For quick development, we're on platformio but it's Arduino-friendly. Some tweaks needed for 480x480 display but we're getting there. Every blink counts! 🖥️🔧📈

First round touch display working with ESP32-S3 👉🔴🟢🔵
We showed off some fabulous shaped displays last week - and now we're getting them running! This is a 2.1" 480x480 round display with SPI configuration and an 18-bit RGB interface. Thankfully there is already an Arduino library https://github.com/Lzw655/ESP32_Display_Panel that supports the SPI configuration over port expander stuff on this eval board, plus the touchscreen drivers, too - it saved me a lot of time! The chipset is ST7701, a typical TFT panel driver. You definitely have to initialize the display first with the proper configuration before you can blast RGB data for it to show up, but we were able to noodle that together here https://github.com/ladyada/ESP32_Display_Panel/blob/master/src/lcd/ST7701.cpp#L37, and now it's looking great. Now we know this display and touch setup works, we'll start ordering the displays for us to stock and use.

Well, this is a first for us…our initial prototype design for an ESP32-S3 "RGB TTL" display driver board didn't work perfectly the first time!!@!?? j/k that's like Tuesday for us…so back to the drawing board. We won't try driving the TFT from the octal PSRAM dedicated pins (35, 36, & 37 natch), which means our pin usage got squeezed out since we needed them for all the hardware and button interfacing. So we slapped on an xCA9554

- picked because it's the same i2c expander used on the official EV kit

and its pretty cheap. Now, the expander handles the three TFT SPI initialization pins, TFT and touch reset, a basic backlight on-off, and the two side buttons. That leaves us 6 GPIO free: a full SPI set and two analog pins. We will share the neopixel with the UF2 bootloader double-tap detect. Will it work? We'll find out!

It's 10pm … Never give up on ESP32-S3 Linux builds… success! 🔧💻🎉
It's 10pm. Do you know where your engineers are? Last time we did a video, we were mucking about with trying to get Linux running on an ESP32-S3 by compiling the shell script provided over at https://gist.github.com/jcmvbkbc/316e6da728021c8ff670a24e674a35e6 - we tried a few methods, and it got quickly into a yak-shaving mess https://www.hanselman.com/blog/yak-shaving-defined-ill-get-that-done-as-soon-as-i-shave-this-yak; eventually, we were able to get everything compiled in WSL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWP6gXlFihc, but even that took a few extra steps. so! We did what any REAL engineer does when they have an extensive toolchain to massage: make a Docker container! https://www.hanselman.com/blog/docker-101-and-how-do-containers-work . A container is a lightweight and fast virtual computer and is easy for people to run no matter what operating system they are on - much simpler and smaller than VirtualBox because it has only the bare essentials. The Dockerfile was fun to put together, a little like a text adventure where you have to figure out the exact order of commands to get the babel fish https://www.ifwiki.org/Babel_fish_puzzle but now when run, it will automagically pop out the right files AND you can always terminal into the docker image at the end to customize and re-compile quickly.
