Toujours, quand elle s’est reconnue comme un travail d’invention de formes dans la langue, la littérature s’est pensée en termes d’espace. Certes, il y a des formes qui s’inventent dans le temps, qui sont les rythmes. Mais, là encore, dès qu’il y a plus d’un niveau d’organisation, le rythme se déplie en espace. Il n’y a guère que les romans de niveau zéro et le déferlement spontanéiste en poésie qui soient en deçà de tout espace virtuel. Chaque fois que l’on a voulu mettre l’accent sur l’élaboration des textes, on a relégué au second plan le simple déroulement temporel, narratif ou discursif qui joint en sens unique le début à la fin. Et l’on a mis en avant la distribution logico-spatiale des éléments dans les textes, les symétries et les dissymétries, les réseaux, les niveaux, les hiérarchies. Le moment formaliste en littérature, indispensable à tout renouvellement, fut chaque fois une redécouverte, une reconquête de l’espace. Il fallut en passer par des tableaux, diagrammes, fléchages, aussi bien à l’époque des formalistes russes qu’à celle du structuralisme, si prétentieux et vains que ces schémas fussent parfois, en vertu d’une nécessité littéraire profonde, celle de la spatialisation mentale.

i just finished words of radiance and my dudes this is probably the best fantasy book I’ve ever read

points about it:

. okay so mr kaladin “honor is dead but i’ll see what i can do” stormblessed carried this book, he is becoming one of my all time favorite characters

. my bestie shallan working the oathgate? revealing to dalinar that she is one of the radiants? i love her honesty

. my boy adolin killed sadeas, finally that slimy rat got what he deserved

. renarin????? truthwatcher????? i knew he was going to be important, i’m so happy for him

. moash my dude, i’m disappointed

. dalinar bonding with the stormfather, you go bondsmith!!

. the whole parshendi summoning the everstorm part was so freaking good

. kaladin saving everyone while revealing he’s radiant, not going to lie. i’ve cried a bit at that part

final consideration:

it is certainly one of the best fantasy books out there, sanderson manages to build the world and the characters so well. can’t wait for what oathbringer has in store for me.
