They wait for Helaena to come inside because they knew it was part of her routine to bid her mother goodnight before she went to bed. Imagine how scared, how helpless Alicent must have felt, knowing two wicked and dangerous men were waiting for her daughter and grandchildren, not knowing yet knowing exactly why all of that was happening, and not being able to do anything to warn or protect her baby girl.
