The complex mainsail systems of the second-generation AC75s tackle the challenge of power versus drag.

As complex as the AC75s will be when launched for racing at the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Challenger Series, New York YC’s American Magic trimmer Lucas Calabrese says that getting the team’s 75-foot foiler around the racecourse will demand the same fundamentals he honed in his years of Olympic 470 sailing. A mainsail is a mainsail, after all, but how trimmers manage the power in these towering high-aspect sails is exponentially more critical. The AC75 Tech Regulations, which define virtually every aspect of the AC75, are “quite restrictive” with the sails, Calabrese says. But for the second-generation twin-skinned mainsails, there is plenty of innovation yet to come.

Boating Write-in Skill from Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy. This Skill is optional, and if given to your investigator, must be set at a minimum rating of +1.

Boating (Physical): Boating is a measure of a character’s skill with and knowledge of the operation of nautical vehicles. Use this Skill when fighting to keep a craft from capsizing during a storm, when trying to diagnose a mechanical issue with a boat, or when trying to navigate at sea with just a chart and compass. Characters do not need to roll this Skill when just steering a boat normally around calm waters (even characters who do not have this Skill at all), one would usually only roll this Skill when a situation arises that requires a high degree of skill from the operator to avert disaster. This Skill can also be used as a Knowledge Skill when understanding nautical jargon or nautical flag language; or identifying the type of boat, size of boat, and what a boat is doing just by looking at its day shapes or its nighttime navigation lights.
