You know what? I've just made a hc

Sam can see hellhounds, has been able to since he was a child he didn't actually know they were hellhounds he just thought they were really disfigured but adorable puppies.

So, Sam is out on a hunt with dean and Castiel, hunting down a crossroads demon when he comes across a disfigured puppy limping to him,

Sam gasps picking up the hurt puppy almost cradling the dangerous thing in his arms

"oh you poor thing.." Sam cooed..

Dean is just STARING at Sam as if hes gone crazy and Castiel is staring at the vicious rabid hellhound that was squirming and showing its stomach for pats like a domesticated pet.

"Sammy what are you doing?-" dean asks because he just sees his brother petting air like a lunatic

"Sam, I advise you.. put that down" Castiel says cautiously

Sam looking up

"isn't he adorable? I used to see these everywhere when I was a child!"

And Castiel stiffening because..

Hellhounds are bloodthirsty attackers, trained to kill and drag souls down to hell,

And Sam had been seeing them for years?

"what the hell-cas what are you seeing?" Dean demands, still outta the loop

Sams now very confused

"what? what is it?"

"Sam...put the hellhound down."

But seriously, tho. Dean, Jack, Castiel, and Sam are all in the church together looking for the Ocultum.

Sam is trying to keep the church doors closed against the hell hounds, while Dean, Jack, and Castiel are standing around talking.

I mean, how many people does it take to just pry up a floorboard? 🤣

3 apparently. 1 to pry it open and 2 to stand there looking at him while ignoring Sam.

idk. there's something about sam winchester. as soon as he's born it's like fate itself punishes him for it. cursed to be The One, vessel of lucifer, sacrifices himself so that the apocalypse doesn't happen -- but he's raised soulless, and when he gets his soul back -

suffering clings to him, everything haunts him.

it's like he's not allowed to be at peace, not allowed to breathe. he's born and he's robbed of a normal life because desperate people do desperate things, and all he is is collateral damage. he's robbed of a normal life, because - actually - he wasn't ever supposed to have one. he's so smaller than god and he runs around in his palm, desperately trying to get off it. it's not a comfortable ride.

and at first he gets to avoid it. as a young stanford dropout he gets to squeeze through it. but fate catches up and catches him by the collar, and people die, and people drown around him, and he can't even surface himself.

there used to be a time dean could take it all for him. but once he's back from hell, it's as if everything screamed at him to go back there, to never rise again. dean wants the trials, and man - sam doesn't even get that. the promise lies empty, devoid of any hope on the floor.

all he gets is a hellhound, standing above him, pouring out a bath, a touch of you're it! down on him. it's hateful. it's disgusting. it's horrible.

and i haven't seen more, i'm for now stuck with a sam that's starting yet another quest that begs for suffering, but.

this man sees a light at the end of the tunnel. he has hope. he has faith. fate will have him again and again and again. but they will never own, not even touch his soul.

it's been reclaimed.

Watching 12x15 Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell (the one with the rogue hellhound). Crowley says that Ramsey (the hellhound) will only obey Lucifer. Thinking about Sam being Lucifer’s perfect vessel. Thinking about Sam having been possessed by Lucifer. Thinking about Sam having spent however long in the cage with Lucifer. Ramsey would have met or known Sam. And she should have recognized him/his soul. Hellhounds recognize their prey because of an expired mark on their soul (if I’m remembering early show lore correctly), so they can see souls and Ramsey should have recognized Sam’s soul.

My next thoughts go in different directions. One: She recognizes Sam’s soul and it’s enough like Lucifer’s that she will listen to him, a little bit. Maybe just enough to save the victim. But not enough to go back to hell and stay there as an obedient hellhound. Two: she recognizes Sam’s soul and remembers her master likes having that soul with him so she tries to take him back to hell and Lucifer instead. Three: she recognizes Sam’s soul and it’s enough like Lucifer’s that she wants to stay around him. So she starts following Sam around; Sam gets a dog (that he can’t see most of time) who can sometimes help them on hunts. She doesn’t stay all the time but shows up unexpectedly.

Just some of my rambling scattered thoughts. I’ve read some fiction similar to these, but it’s usually set in Sam’s boyking! era.
