Part Seventy-Three

Summary:  Baldwin Montclair had a string of ex girlfriends, a single child, and a  lifetime longer than most people could dream of to make all kinds of  mistakes. His family knew one which kept coming out of the woodwork to  irritate him every other century

'I call this emergency session of the Congregation to order.' Agatha took her seat and looked around the room. Everyone was tense; the witches looked jittery, although Satu Järvinen sat poised and upright. Baldwin was clenching his jaw so tightly she was surprised it didn't snap. Dominico looked bored.

'In the early hours of this morning, a member of this Congregation, Peter Knox, attempted to enter the grounds of Sept Tours, the seat of the De Clermont family, and was prevented from doing so and killed by an unseen force.' Agatha sat back in her chair. 'The floor is yours.'

'Peter Knox operated alone.' Satu balanced an Ipad on her lap. It was switched off for now; no one wanted a second glance at the pictures.

'And he died alone.' Baldwin had taken witness statements from the entire household that morning with Agatha Wilson breathing down his neck. The witches had kicked up a stink but as head of the family, and in the wake of such a blatant act of disrespect, Baldwin had the right.

'He was already dead by the time anyone left the house.'

'They would have been well within their rights to defend their home from attack, no one disputes this,' Sigismund said soothingly. 'To enchant one of our own...'

'But what killed him?' Gerbert asked. The man was always scheming but it seemed that the manner of Knox's death had stumped even his vivid imagination.

Agatha looked at Baldwin. The man's face was an impenetrable mask.

'Do we know why he didn't defend himself?'

'There was residual energy on the ground suggesting a spirit,' Satu answered Agatha. A ripple went through the room. Gerbert muttered a prayer and crossed himself.

'One ghost?'

'Perhaps if it was the ghost of a water witch?'

'Impossible,' Baldwin said. 'No witch has ever been buried at Sept Tours.'

'The attack did take place in a sacred grove,' Satu spoke up. 'It's possible that the veil was particularly thin and a powerful spirit slipped through for a moment.'

'Would they still be loose?' Agatha's heart leapt. If Sept Tours was compromised, where the hell were her son and daughter-in-law supposed to meet her again? There were previous few safe havens left.

'No.' Sigismund said, firmly.

Agatha relaxed. 'Well that's a relief.'

'Motion to dismiss this and move on to the matter of appointing Knox's successor?' Baldwin asked.

Domenico's hand shot up. Satu and Sigismund slowly raised theirs; Agatha and the daemons, and Gerbert, followed.

'The motion carries.'

'Who have you settled on?' Agatha leant forward a little in her chair.

'Janet Gowdie,' Satu announced.

Agatha nodded to herself. A powerful witch from a respectable family, no political allegiances or strong opinions...no prior scandal as far as she was aware..

She looked at her fellow daemons, who nodded.

'We second the appointment of Janet Gowdie.'

Baldwin raised his hand for the vampires. 'The motion carries.'

'If I have to hear the words "emergency session" one more time I'm going to scream.'

'Welcome back,' Marthe took Baldwin's jacket as he marched into the front parlour.

'Will you-'

'Please,' said Ysabeau.

'-please tell me what the fuck happened this morning?! Who killed Knox?'

Emily looked at Sarah. Her wife hadn't let go of her hand since she staggered back to their room, clutching her head and gasping that Knox was incoming. Sarah hesitated, and nodded.

'There was a ghost. A young woman, about seventeen or eighteen years old-'

Ysabeau looked up from her book. Matthew and Marthe paused.

'She had long braids over her shoulders, and a red dress..' Em trailed off.

Baldwin was a statue.

Emily sat back, Sarah squeezing close to her side. Diana was watching Matthew, who was watching his brother.

The low hum of a rotor blade cut through the silence.

And there was the mountains, and the town, and the castle, and the group of familiar faces crowded on the lawn. Martin felt a lump rising in his throat and he bounced his foot to distract himself.

By time he stepped down out of the helicopter he had mostly composed himself. It was really only him and Baldwin* who could tell he had a knot in his guts.

The tension held. Martin took a breath.

'Lucius' said Martin, gently.

'It's Baldwin now' said Baldwin, and if his voice cracked imperceptibly and his eyes looked wet that was nobody's business but his.

Martin shrugged, gave a quiet smile.

His expression hardened into cool neutrality as he turned to Matthew and Diana.

'We need to talk.'

A few nights after Baldwin’s visit, I woke to the sensation of a cold finger jerking against my spine as it traced the trunk of the tree on my neck.

The finger moved in barely controlled fits and starts to my shoulders, where it found the outline left by the goddess’s arrow and the star left by Satu Järvinen.

Slowly the finger traveled down to the dragon that encircled my hips.

Matthew’s hands were working again.
