today in "things I learned while doing writing research", I hadn't realized that the word scuttlebutt came from the ship's equivalent of a water cooler. I just knew it meant gossip. human beings just love gathering around a water source and talking shit. god bless.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say Disney was trying to sabotage Lin's career (as in taking away perfect opportunities for his song writing). They so wanted to copy his style in Wish but his style is unique. So why not bring him to that? Why did you make him write that Scuttlebutt instead? And this year the early things I heard about Moana 2 is the music isn't great, and they had a Tiktoker write the music. (I'm gonna keep an open mind but yeesh, that sounds like a similar situation to Wish where they got a pop writer to write a musical. It's like they wanted the songs for Wish to be TikTok trends instead of actual music.) Lin already worked on the original Moana, why not bring him back instead of relegating to another live-action remake? Do I need to remind y'all how much Encanto's music slaps?

The Paradox of Progress: Why the World is Improving Despite Our Gloomy Perceptions
In an era where the cacophony of pessimism seems to echo louder than the symphony of progress, one might be forgiven for believing that the world is teetering on the brink of catastrophe. Yet, contrary to the pervasive scuttlebutt, the reality is that humanity is experiencing unprecedented advancements.
The Illusion of Decline
It is a truth universally acknowledged, albeit rarely admitted, that the human psyche is predisposed to focus on the negative. The media, with its insatiable appetite for sensationalism, has perfected the art of amplifying every conceivable calamity. This relentless barrage of negativity has cultivated a collective myopia, obscuring the remarkable strides we have made in health, technology, and social equity.
Empirical Evidence of Advancement
Let us, for a moment, cast aside the hyperbolic headlines and examine the empirical evidence. Global poverty has been halved in the past two decades, a feat that would have been deemed impossible by our forebears. Life expectancy has soared, with medical innovations eradicating diseases that once decimated populations. Technological advancements have democratized information, empowering individuals across the globe with unprecedented access to knowledge.
The Cognitive Dissonance Dilemma
Despite these incontrovertible facts, a pervasive sense of decline persists. This cognitive dissonance can be attributed to the availability heuristic, a psychological phenomenon wherein individuals overestimate the prevalence of events based on their immediate recall. In simpler terms, the more we hear about disasters, the more we believe they are ubiquitous.
A Call to Action: Recalibrating Our Perception
To extricate ourselves from this quagmire of negativity, we must recalibrate our perception. This requires a conscious effort to seek out positive narratives and to critically evaluate the information we consume. Engage with platforms that prioritize constructive journalism, and cultivate a discerning eye for sensationalism masquerading as news.
Conclusion: Embracing Optimism
In conclusion, while the world is far from perfect, it is unequivocally better than it has ever been. By acknowledging the progress we have made and fostering an optimistic outlook, we can inspire further advancements. Let us not be swayed by the scuttlebutt of doom, but rather, embrace the potential for a brighter future. After all, the world is not falling apart; it is, in fact, coming together.

The Scuttlebutt of Capitalism: A Tale of Two Institutions
Capitalism is often hailed as the engine of prosperity. Yet, beneath its shiny veneer lies a dichotomy that shapes societies: inclusive versus extractive institutions.
Inclusive Institutions: The Builders
Inclusive institutions are the architects of opportunity. They empower individuals, ensuring equal access to resources and fair competition. These institutions foster innovation and economic growth by allowing talent to flourish regardless of background. When markets operate inclusively, they create a level playing field, where meritocracy reigns and social mobility is possible.
Extractive Institutions: The Takers
In stark contrast, extractive institutions are the gatekeepers of inequality. They concentrate power and wealth in the hands of a few, stifling competition and innovation. These institutions prioritize short-term gains over long-term prosperity, often exploiting resources and labor without reinvestment in the community. The result is a cycle of poverty and disenfranchisement, where the rich get richer, and the poor remain marginalized.
Evidence from History
History provides ample evidence of this dichotomy. Nations with inclusive institutions, like those in Scandinavia, enjoy high standards of living and robust economies. Meanwhile, countries plagued by extractive institutions often face economic stagnation and social unrest. The difference lies in the distribution of power and resources.
Debunking the Myths
Critics argue that free markets naturally lead to inclusivity. However, without regulatory frameworks, markets can devolve into extractive systems. The myth of the self-regulating market ignores the need for oversight to prevent monopolies and ensure fair practices. Regulation is not the enemy of capitalism; it is its safeguard.
Calls to Action
To harness the true potential of capitalism, we must advocate for policies that promote inclusivity. Support for education, healthcare, and fair labor practices are essential. Encourage governments to implement regulations that prevent exploitation and ensure equitable resource distribution.
Conclusion: A Path Forward
The future of capitalism hinges on our ability to choose inclusivity over extraction. By fostering institutions that empower rather than exploit, we can create a world where prosperity is shared, and innovation thrives. The choice is ours: to build or to take. Let us choose wisely.

Part of Your World: A Disney Twisted Tale - Liz Braswell
Fun fact: i did not watch any of the Disney classic movies until the last few years and have instantly fallen in love with them. Being so, Disney’s Twisted Tales novels have become a fast favorite for me and Part of Your World was right up there on that list.
This WHAT IF story shows what would happen if Ursula had won at the end of the little mermaid. In the opening chapters, we find Princess Eric and the entire kingdom under a spell with Princess “Vanessa” gathering the army and we find Ariel, voiceless still, sitting on the throne in her father’s place. After hearing from Scuttle, Ariel suspects that her father, who is presumed dead, might actually be alive, she embarks on a journey to rescue him and along the way her one true love!
Truthfully, I really enjoyed this story, as I have enjoyed the previous Twisted Tales novels that I have read in the past, but it was a little bit harder to get into for me. I think I picked the book up about 4 times and put it back on my shelf before finally sticking with it. The beginning of the book felt slow to me and I had a difficult time reading chapters from the perspective of the seagulls. BUT, I am glad that I stuck it out. The scheming, the plot twists, and the vast array of character development (especially from that of the side characters) was fascinating and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
