Mild spoiler??
Am I the only one that feels like Sedric and Carson are rushed? I feel like they had potential if they developed more, it literally felt like it took 5 pages

"We should talk some time," he said quietly. "I suspect we have far more in common than you know. Perhaps we should trust each other."
He knows.

I think the main problem of the rainwild chronicals stems from the fact tha5 the there isnt enough plot time for the story to properly delve into the psyche of the characters and let them develop, losing much of the appeal most rote books have. Those are annoying teenagers that don't go through all the trauma other rote characters do to change to not-annoying teenagers (like in liveships) the characters do , but neither doe sthe story take place over a long enough period of time for them to develop into adults (like fitz in the farseer trilogy)
When you get to the f&f trilogy you see how much they truely developed and found their place and became adults (encluding some changes that seem drastic, because it has been so long in world since they were who they were in their own series). Its just kind of dissapointing how so many characters we just didnt get to see the development of, because of the lack of time for it in the rain wild chronicles themselves.

"'I'm grateful to him. I don't know how to thank him for being so determined.'
Leftrin gave a small cough. 'Well, I think he's hoping that Sedric will do the thanking. Them being the same kind of men, and all.'
'The same kind of men? I can't think of two men more unlike.'
Leftrin shot her an odd look and then shrugged. 'Like enough in the ways that matters to them, I'm thinking.'"

I love how Carson met an uppity grumpy dummy and watched him sulk in his room for weeks and get all gross and sick and let his room rot around him and he was like 😍😍😍😍

Davvie raced right up to his huge dragon with a fine disregard for how angry the beast was. From the moment the boy had appeared, Kalo's attention had been fixed only on him. "Why weren't you here to attend me?" the dragon bellowed accusingly. "See how I am burned! Your carelessness could have cost me my life!" The dragon flung up his head to expose the raw circle on his throat where Mercor's acid had scored him. It was the size of a saucer.
Sedric flinched at sight of the wound, but Davvie went pale as death.
"Oh, Kalo, are you going to be all right? I'm so sorry! I was around the river bend, checking the fish trap, to see if we'd caught anything!"
Sedric knew about the fish trap. He'd watched Davvie and Carson install it yesterday. The two baskets were fixed on the ends of arms that rotated like a wheel propelled by the current. The baskets were designed to scoop fish from the water and drop them down a chute into a woven holding pen. It had taken Davvie and Carson several days to build it. If it worked, they were going to build more to try to lessen the burden of constantly hunting for food for the dragons.
"He wasn't checking the fish trap," Carson said in a low voice as he joined Sedric. Kalo had hunkered down, and Davvie was making worried sounds as he examined the dragon's spread wings for any other injury. Lecter, looking guilty, was leading Sestican down to the river to wash him.
Sedric watched the lad surreptitiously adjust his belt buckle. Carson was shaking his head in displeasure, but Sedric had to grin. "No. They weren't," he concluded.

Is the rain wild chronicals the weakest rote series? Yes
But its not as bad as the fandom is making it out to be. I found it really enjoyable actually!

Finished rote last night. First of all, fuck that. Second of all, what are the preferred fandom fix it fics? Personally I’m fine with everything until the parasites.
I’m open to happy family Fitzloved. I’m open to Bee stays with Nettle and Fitzloved disappear. I’m open to them settling anywhere. Building a cottage by Verity’s dragon and taking trips to the areas around the mountain kingdom and learning about Fitz’s bio mom and visiting Bee and Spark and Per and Ketricken for holidays? Ideal. Bingtown? Cool. Show me Fitzloved double dating with Althea and Brashan. Kelsingra? Even better. I want Beloved to befriend Alise as Beloved and not Amber while Leftrin and Fitz get drunk and talk about Tarman (now a dragon) and Nighteyes. I wanna see the Liveship Dragons and how different they are from the traditionally hatched ones. CARSON AND SEDRIC HELPING FITZ WITH HIS COMP HET BULLSHIT while Motley is just vibing with Heeby and calling Fitz stupid.
Help me. Anything but worms and everything being left unsaid.

People in this fandom will really look at The Fool, Patience, Lacey, Carson, Sedric, Hest, Davvie, Lecter, Kennit, Ash/Spark, and yes, even Fitz himself, and still have the gall to call it queer bait.
These characters are explicitly queer, their actions impact the narrative, they are well written, and their identities are treated with respect. That is the best possible queer representation you could ask for in any story.
I've seen people on tumblr basing the likelihood of if they read this series on whether or not it's "actually gay" and I'm here to tell you that it is. There are queer characters. There are queer protagonists. And no matter what you see people in the fandom say, Robin Hobb wrote some amazing queer representation in a genre that rarely sees it at all.
TLDR;
Queer bait = disrespectful marketing ploy that exploits queer audiences
Queer bait ≠ "my two favorite characters never have sex"

The difficult game of trying to figure out if Carson and Davvie are being so nice to Sedric bc they’re part of the dragon-butchering conspiracy or if it’s just the lgbt community looking out for each other
