You look over your shoulder when Yeonjun reaches you, staring up at him and squinting your eyes to shield from the sun. “How’d I know you’d come find me?” you ask, half-amused.

Yeonjun gives you a short laugh, unsure of himself as he sits on the grass beside you. It feels a little like he’s invading your space. He’s seen you sitting alone on this field as if it was all yours so many times.

“I thought I should thank you again,” he says, a little shy. He feels like he owes you a lot for last night. The whole city probably owes you a lot for saving him, honestly.

You look at him with a small smile, leaning your head on your bent knees. “Mhm. Shouldn’t I be thanking you, Spider-man?” There’s a teasing quality to your voice, and it makes Yeonjun laugh nervously. He should probably address that.

“I really hope you won’t tell anybody.”

“I won’t. I’m still finding it hard to believe anyway,” you say. Your sentences are all laced with a tiredness and exhaustion that Yeonjun can’t help but to feel at fault for. “It’s just weird to know it now.”

Yeonjun hums. He can sympathize with you on that—it must be really bewildering to know your classmate is the one swinging around town shooting webs at criminals. He just hopes you can forgive him for dragging you into this.

“Spider-man’s a little less cool now, huh?” he jokes, keeping his voice quiet even though no one’s around.

Your smile is full and genuine, and Yeonjun’s heart skips a beat. “I always thought he was a little lame,” you answer. Yeonjun’s ego bruises at that. You continue, “But I think he’s kind of interesting now.”

He can only hope that you don’t see the blush that takes over his face. He looks away to hide it, but he feels your gaze on him. “I don’t know if I’m that interesting,” he says, acting all humble. It’s clearly bait, and he hopes you’ll catch it.

“I can be the judge of that. Let me get to know you more,” you offer. Yeonjun bites his cheek to stop himself from grinning at this massive win.

Welcome back to the Kingswap AU Yapping. Todays topic is Party Dynamics

(What's this?) Today we focus in on Clovis (Our swapped King now in Siffrins position). As you can see, his first introduction to the party was a bit of a...mixed affair? Guy's got some anxieties (Don't worry, they caught him later) WARNING: This chatter post i'm just gonna blanket as just being spoilers all around for 'In Stars And Time', and any content warnings that apply to the game also apply here.

First things first before getting into it...WOAH THANK YOU GUYS FOR THE RESPONSE! I wasn't expecting people to resonate so much with the idea, I was maybe expecting a small handful of notes, but seeing people interested and keysmashing in the comments/tags and theorizing makes me very happy! I also appreciate all the asks that have been sent in (Don't worry. I've seen you guys who are curious about how much of a freak Isabeau is re: the Stagemaster. I see you. I love you. I will get to those soon.) But the topic today is focused on Clovis.

Hey Jolly, what's the point of focusing on all this background stuff if this AU ends up in the loops anyways?

It's MY BRAINROT, and I SAY that the Orb Quest and background stuff is ESSENTIAL to the LORE A big part hanging over In Stars and Time is the Team. The Friends. The FAMILY. It is a huge crux of the motivations of Siffrin, and for this AU I wanna sell you on the Swapped King having a place in the party, and how the others bounce off of him and interact with him. It's fun translating someone like The King into a form that is a very different role but keeping some of the themes he comes with.

So, what's the Vibe?

Clovis is an awkward wet dog. He fills a similar niche that Siffrin does, being a semi-forgetful islander who is a complete disaster once you peel back the curtains, and is different in how he intersects with the party.

A small example would be puns. He doesn't make puns - but he ends up being funny anyways

"You're telling me a shrimp fried this rice?" He forgets words a lot similar to Siffrin, and is mortified every time - but he says things so seriously that everyone has a great time anyways.

One on One, you can rank the differences between character interactions on...Do they Like Dogs or Cats More? Siffrin is Cat, Clovis is Dog.

Lets Look At The Most Different Dynamic Compared to Siffrin: Mirabelle.

Mirabelle prefers dogs. She struggles to understand Siffrin, and Siffrin struggles to understand her, and that is the crux of a lot of problems that happen in ISAT, with Mirabelle not wanting to seem nosey with Siffrins secrets.

So, she thrives alongside Clovis. A sad, wet dog she found behind a dumpster. Who is very, very intense and gives off unnerving energy.

Mirabelle leash your fucking cryptid. He's scaring the neighbours.

Clovis is slightly more open than Siffrin (Can't hide behind a hat, after all) and he willingly searched out the Party to join them on their quest to save Vaugarde (Though he's a bit cagey on answering why outside of thats what a knight would do, but thats okay). He's willingly pledged his service, and Mirabelle appreciates having someone who is unambiguously on her side without having to be asked. It also helps that he also seems a little scared all the time, but thats okay. They can be brave together. (She just wishes that he wouldn't put himself in harms way all the time)

Mira also considers Clovis to be a bit of a good luck charm, in fact - she's learned she can take him out to do errands, and for some strange reason...She doesn't get bothered nearly as much by strangers approaching her to talk with the 'Chosen of the Change God'. Going shopping is almost pleasant when he's with her!

Clovis isn't really sure why it happens either. (It's because you scare the shit out of people with your neutral expression, dude.)

Hey, wouldn't that kinda dedication be a little weird for Mirabelle?

Maybe. I'd like to think they're on a weird similar wavelength, with Clovis being so deep in his knightly sensibilities and being so polite to her. Some....secret third thing (It's friendship. Ace for Ace solidarity). Clovis would probably catch onto the papers well before Dormont, but, well. He'd probably not wanna snoop about it, cause that's rude!

(He's some flavour of Ace? You decide. shipping ain't off the table, but that's not the focus for this AU. The focus is pain and the agonies). Much like how in the artbook insertdisc5 muses that Siffrin would travel with Odile the longest, I think Clovis would join Mirabelle for her pilgrimage.

So, what about someone who is more a Cat person?

Like, say, Odile! Great topic change. Clovis steals Siffrin's spot as 'Odile's chosen for Secret Quests' because he's good at keeping secrets, though...Odile has to pay a bit more attention to Clovis when left in a book store or library on his lonesome. Guy just hones in on Headache books like candy.

As seen above with the first meeting, Clovis also keeps a lot of Siff's Sus energy. But considering how easily Clovis tends to cave under Odile's pressure, the idea that he could be an assassin from the Stagemaster is laughable at best. (And also easily disproved, considering how active The Stagemaster is in Orbquest for this AU)

You know how in ISAT proper, Odile's Susquest is incredibly hard to get naturally, and often needing a guide to achieve for the typical player? Yeah that's reversed. Clovis can't act for SHIT and Odile can read him like a book. Clovis going through the House of Dormont and has one innocent conversation with the team and you just hear*Ping! Ping! Ping! Ping!* Cats can keep secrets, but you KNOW when a dog has done something they shouldn't have. (Odile probably finds that both funny and charming?)

Now, just cause Clovis can't keep a personal secret, and is potentially easy to read...doesn't mean he isn't cunning. After all...The King in ISAT proper is able to deduce that there's something fucky going on with Siffrin, and is perfectly capable of deception.

Clovis voted 'second least likely to beat someone in chess (first being Isabeau on purpose)' but the truth of the matter is he's probably cracked at that. Probably would also love Strategy Games (And is fucking awful at poker).

He'd also prolly join Odile and Isabeau in smoking a bong and going drinking. They're both prolly delighted at this (Out straight edge little knight smoking and drinking? The scandal!)

So...What's Up With Isabeau And Clovis. Is Isabeau...interested in Clovis like he is Siffrin?

WELL. THERE'S CERTAINLY SOMETHING COMPLICATED HERE.

We can't talk about Isabeau and an AU'd KING and not get a LITTLE bit into The Gender. Even in the baseline material, you can probably write essays on the compare/contrast between The King and Isabeau regarding their masculinity and how it manifests (and in fact, i'm almost sure people have!). Seriously, The King literally chose his title. An explicitly masculine title, with him specifically highlighting the ability to make decisions and force his will onto others.

There's shades of it here, but the villainous side of it is understandably no longer present. Clovis...well, Clovis has a complex relationship to his gender? Unlike Siffrin (who is explicitly said to have never done Body Craft) The King is stated to HAVE done Bodycraft at some point (even if it was to BE BIG), so...Clovis maybe has thought about it (maybe even done it?).

I like to say he's explicitly attached to being A Guy. I'm talking full on 'yippee!' if people call him Sir Clovis. Could just be he's happy to be identified As a Knight...could be something more.

I'll leave the interpretation to you.

But wait! You said it was complex, this seems straightforward?

Well. The second half of it is that Clovis...explicitly wants to be seen as a protector. He doesn't WANT to scare people, he doesn't WANT to be seen as intimidating or weird or strange and intense. He doesn't want the Party to see him as dangerous or scary. ('But you're the good kind of scary!' is prolly what Mirabelle would say, the horror loving fanatic she is.)

Not that Clovis would ever -voice- it, but he so very desperately wants what Isabeau has. And vice versa, Isabeau I think would deeply admire Clovis for being practically fearless when it comes to taking on the burdens of the adventure. Clovis takes things in stride (even if in social contexts he's VERY NERVOUS) and yet...Clovis might be anxious...but Clovis isn't a coward. Clovis knows what he wants to be. If shit hits the fan, Clovis is marching forward, focused and unafraid to use what cunning he can muster to get through the obstacle.

So, yeah, Isabeau and Clovis are definitely two bros bonding over being dudes, 100%. Maybe not super outwardly, but it's there. The whole thing smacks of Gender. They both want what the other got.

Does that translate to a crush from Isabeau that Clovis is oblivious to? I haven't decided yet (I lean towards yes? because thinking about Loop having an aneurysm watching Isabeau be an idiot trying to confess to Clovis makes me happy)

They're friends, at a minimum.

Hey Wait a Second! How is Clovis with Touch?

He's so-so about it! He has the bonus of having his armor insulate him, so, the party will casually touch his armored bits like his gloves and chestplate, but...he reacts about as well as Siffrin is to sudden touch. He'd like it! But. Uh...Well. Not like he can remember a time when someone hugged him, you know? (He'd like a hug, but that would be weird to ask for. Something something knightly distance something something.)

But Wait! There's One More Party Member! What about Bonnie?

(Yes for the timecraft from the Stagemaster, btw, i'll get into it another time)

Eye incident? What Eye Incident? Bonnies right over there, see?

Bonnies all well and go- what? You want them to turn around? Okay...Hey! Bonnie!

Turn around for us!

See? Bonnies fine. Everything is fine. It's. Fine. Maybe we'll get into the tale there another time. (That's not a typo. Bonnie calls him Cloves :) )

Anyways, what's the Conclusion here?

Clovis wants to support the party. Clovis, just a little bit selfishly, wants to be useful to them just a little bit longer, if only to make sure Bonnie gets back to their sister (and so she can yell at him profusely and maybe beat him to death with a hammer)

If Siffrin's mantra is 'i'm fine', Clovis' is 'I can handle it.'

See? He's strong. That's what knights are for, right? Bearing the burden? He can handle it. He can handle it.

SO WHY CAN'T HE HANDLE IT?!

• Ah yes, the infamous Skateboard himself huh? As expected, he did have his charm after all. This guy can definitely be a package of surprises following another, but there are indeed a few certain things that can be assumed about him pretty easily. Skateboard is pretty flexible in sex himself as he can go both ways without too much struggles. Though he is used to top rather than bottom because he feels like it suits him far better. He has a reference to being the one who does the thing rather than just receiving since it allows him to be in charge of the situation as he knows what he wants and how should he do it. He still bottoms when he really feels like it though, but only when he wants a change in the dynamic to spice things up a bit. Other than that? He tops all the way up, baby

• Sex in Playground is deemed as something casual with no hard feelings. If you walk down the more reserved alleyway there, you will get just what I meant when saying that. Anyway, the same principle applies to Skateboard. He has his fair share of experiences considering how much of a chick magnet he is. Those one night stands are how he figured it out. And hell, he’s good at it, one has to confirm. At least he knows enough to know what he is doing and how to use his dick for some good pleasures. Though of course he stops those one night stands are stuff once he’s with you, but that doesn’t mean he is any less of a professional like he used to play around. You’re in good hands when he has his way with you behind closed door. Maybe a bit too good. Feel free to give him some suggestions that you want to try too, he’s an open book

• As everyone already knows by now, Skateboard is strong due to how much he has to constantly push himself from one place to another while beating people’s asses up like any normal day. He’s an adrenaline junkie, and said thrill gives him that euphoric feeling in which he can’t really find the right word to describe it. That is to say he loves semi-public sex. Just the idea of someone walks up on him wrecking the hell out of you in a dark alley already makes his breath shakes in ecstasy. He also likes to use his strength to push you to where he wants you to be and watch you squirm in his touch. It makes Skateboard going crazy as he knows that you will soon be under his mercy afterwards. Keeping both of your wrists down by one hand while the other fingers you, he likes the thought of it. Probably manhandle you a bit while he is that turned on too. Of course, he’d never want to hurt you, but he won’t be gentle

• He also seems to enjoy spanking you when you’re in a position where he can see your ass, like doggy style. Therefore, slight impact play is included, obviously. And one thing unexpected about Skateboard is how much he enjoys seeing you in some special suggestive clothing. Don’t ask him why, he’ll say it simply makes him feel things down there in his pants for no reason at all. You know he’s shameless already, what is there to be shy about? • He might find the idea of showing you off to his gang to be a good one. Though does it help when he feels slightly jealous when some of them are eying you in a wrong way? Absolutely not. Skateboard might act cool and careless in front of everyone while wrapping his arm around your shoulder, but you’ll soon to realize his how firm it slowly becomes as he gets pissed off. You can feel the drastic change in his vibe, as it’s starting to get defeated despite that smirk of his. He will deal with those idiots later, though that isn’t something that he can cool off immediately down. So when you offer to help him rather than leave him alone, he might or might not be a tad more erratic and dominant than usual due to pent up anger. Not towards you, of course. But there’s actually something about him being annoyed pretty hot, get it?

• Oral is a good getaway when he’s feeling extra spicy. Skateboard is pretty easygoing with both the concept of receiving and giving, anything will be fine with him. He’s a real adrenaline junkie as he gets off it that after all. Skateboard is like a bull, his endurance is questionably high as he also regains his strength back pretty quick. It makes you wonder if all the Playground folks are this much of a horndogs. When you tell him that, it just draws out a cocky smirk on his face as he knows he has left quite the impression on you at that point

• Hard to be the one breaking your bubble there sweetheart, but honestly if you expect some sort of princess treatment aftercare like an obvious thing afterwards, then you’re at the wrong address. Skateboard would simply go for a cigarette for himself or stay still for a moment before talking to you like how he usually does again. If not, then he will just pass out immediately. At the very least, he does offer you a glass of water to rehydrate sometimes as well as asking if you want some takeout. If you want something, you have to tell him. He doesn’t understand that aftercare is such an important thing because life at Playground is too casual and fast paced. Of course, Skateboard will hear you out willingly one you have spoken up about your needs once you have reminded him, so don’t worry much

I’ll start under the cut!

So, it wasn’t actually Rin’s idea to become a cram school teacher, much less a teacher in the first place! I mean, who would let the spawn of Satan, prince of Gehenna, unstable half-demon child near a bunch of teenagers? Mephisto and Shura.

He doesn’t even trust himself to take care of Kuro, but thankfully Kuro is a demon who can very much take care of themself. So why would the Vatican trust him near future exorcist children? They didn’t! Shura and Mephisto surprisingly collaborated together to kidnap Rin and slap him into True Cross to do an urgent mission: teach teenagers.

Yeah, they thought it’s be a great way to spice up his depressed lifestyle after all the beatdowns he’s gone through. Safe to say it worked.

Now, you’d probably expect him to teach a practical class considering his talents, but nah! Shura doesn’t want him feeling any more of a weapon than what be probably thinks he is, so he’s teaching.. drumroll, please….. demon pharmaceuticals!!!! 🎉

Haha… guess who chose that.. Mephisto, that bastard.

You see, I wouldn’t say I know everything about what it takes to become an exorcist, but writer’s freedom and all that! Teacher!Rin is knowledgeable in other areas other than just being a knight. His weakest link is probably scripture, because he lacks the patience to be an aria. He’s a proactive guy!!

Let’s talk about some Shura-Rin sibling stuff shall we? You may have noticed Shura has already gotten her haircut from my posts, thats because that whole arc happened already. Yep, Rin and Yukio go on like normal and help free Shura from her curse before Yukio defects and shit hits the fan for Rin! Shura thinks of those two like brothers, so being the oldest trying to take care of Rin, who literally lost everything now, she takes it up on herself to care for him (in her own rough-love-with-hints-of-soft way). She takes him out to go get matching earrings to help distract him from his new image, safe to say it’s the one thing he likes about himself for a while, and it cheers him up whenever he looks at it!

Yikes… poor Rin. 😓

Shura is an anchor for Rin’s current lifestyle, and she helps him in a lot of different ways. Dragging him to be a teacher with her is one of the many things she’s done!

And thanks to that, he gains an even greater pillar of support from it. Although his relationship with his students started off looking like the introduction from Assassination Classroom… he made it work out with his amazing charm. The cram school students gradually warmed up to their semi-unstable, depressed demon prince, son of Satan, demon pharmaceuticals teacher! Learning about his situation and the unfairness of it all brought them to become even more determined to help their poor teacher. Thanks to the help of his amazing students, Rin starts to gain some light into his shadowed life. He starts to let himself relax, have fun bringing back old passions, mourn, and enjoy the life he has even now. His brother may not be there with him just yet, but when he does, Rin will be ready.

And that’s one of the biggest changes I wanted to make clear for this AU! Teacher!Rin doesn’t have the same support system Canon!Rin does. He didn’t have friends, he didn’t have his brother, and he barely liked himself. But when he finally started to gain even just friends, Rin started to get better.

Because Rin thrives off others.

He wants to see his loved ones happy, even if it means he may not be. I really want to bring out these aspects from his childhood. Because while he did love cooking, everyone made it seem like his only good trait. And that’s just messed up, guys. Rin lived for his family at the monastery, despite not amounting to even half as much as his brother, and being reminded of that fact regularly, I’d assume, he still loved them. He loves his brother even after everything he’s done to him. He loved Shiro even after learning about the secrets he’d kept from him. Because Rin can forgive anyone so long as they can be happy, even if it means hurting himself doing so.

Now, this is my take on Rin’s personality, and others may have different perspectives; I’d love to hear them all!! There’s always room for improvement in my viewpoint and opinions, so please feel free to initiate some friendly debate and share some ideas! I love love love seeing everyone enjoy Teacher!Rin just as much as I do!!!!!

I’d also like to mention that this story is focused on healing, meaning this will probably be categorized as a hurt/comfort with necessary hints of Rin whump!! Woo!!

Headcanons for what each of the boys were like as teens? 😊

Omg I love this ask! I immediately started laughing just picturing this for each of them!

For this one, I left Cillian out, seeing as there’s enough snippets of his younger years that he’s shared publicly, and outside the context of a fic, I can’t make any assumptions.

Answers for the rest of the boys…

Emmett: He was 100% the “All-American Boy Next Door.” Loved sports, cars, being outdoors, action movies, and girls. Was a semi-decent student and was definitely popular, but was nice to everyone and wasn’t a jerk at all. Occasionally got in trouble for breaking rules, sneaking out of the house, or stealing a few beers from his parents’ fridge, but overall was a good kid who everyone loved.

Leonard: Was popular as well, but didn’t have very many true, close friends due to moving around a lot for his dad’s job. But everyone always loved him because he was charming, smart, and handsome, even at a younger age. He was also very “All-American” and enjoyed sports and “boy stuff”. He was obsessed with James Bond and other spy movies, and he absolutely had multiple issues of Playboys hidden under his bed.

Robert: Had a very difficult and non-traditional childhood due to his mother’s death and the emotional absence of his father. He was popular, but mostly because everyone knew he was rich, but weren’t truly his friends. He did have a couple of true, close friends, and they enjoyed traditional “boy stuff” as well. Robert was a very good student and would always receive compliments on how mature and polite he was. Poor baby didn’t have much of a childhood/teen years beyond that.

Tommy: 100% wild troublemaker who drove every adult in his life insane with worry and annoyed frustration. Was constantly mouthing off, sneaking out, ran away for days at a time, breaking into shops and stealing stuff, and just causing general chaos. Was very popular and was already a ladies man, but no one could ever stay mad at him because he was already a master of smooth talk and negotiating.

Raymond: An absolute little shit with an attitude problem and a smart mouth. Already had an ego too big for one room even as a teen, and ironically, despite his position of authority as an adult, he was always questioning and defying authority as a teen. Had lots of friends and was the “leader of the pack”, and he was always looking for ways to one-up people or have some kind of advantage. Loved action movies and cars, and was asking his parents if he could move out and live on his own before he was even 18.

Jonathan: Was very quiet and studious, and always seemed to be brooding and observing people. Was not popular and got bullied quite a bit for being a “nerd” or coming across as “weird.” Was an excellent student and would often be correcting and challenging teachers and adults on what they were teaching or saying. Was constantly reading and studying, and watched lots of scientific and nature shows. Also watched a lot of porn.

Jackson: Was an absolute nightmare. A rude, asshole kid who was constantly mouthing off, had no care or interest in school, and who broke rules just for the sake of breaking them. Defied authority in every sense possible and was always in trouble. Was a big bully and found something to make fun of for everyone. Loved the aggression that came with sports, and got in a lot of physical fights. Snuck into bars and strip clubs and got arrested multiple times.

I have one where whenever they go on feild missions they always find each other something and basically do a trade when they regroup (Loki usually finds Mobius jet-ski magazines, while Mobius finds Loki star or snake based stuff)

This is semi-canon but Loki ALWAYS goes out of his way to match with Mobius, even if that means changing Mobius and his outfits with magic. Mobius finds it charming

Loki is a Frost Giant and my designs for Frost Giants have tails so in Frost Giant form, Loki wraps his tail around Mobius when he wants him closer

Here's how I'd fix Skeleton Crew

Give it a full 10-12 episodes. Disney has more money than god, they can spare some.

This is a kid's adventure movie, so why do the kids want to go back home from moment 1? The reason that the binary sunset is one of the iconic images of starwars is that it expresses Luke's (and the audience's) deepseated longing to go somewhere they've never seen before, which SURPRISE: is why we're watching a scifantasy story full of weird and wondrous vistas and alien critters. Either have these kids desperately want to leave At Attin and want to turn around later, or have them stranded deep in a part of unknown space and make getting back difficult. Then you drop them on a series of weird, wondrous worlds chock full of starwars magic (stuff from old movie genres with a scifantasy twist, practical effects, marketable iconography, and the occasional callback) and have them grow in response to adversity. It's adventure writing 101

Lets say that after their first hyperspace jaunt, the kids get stuck on some planet and are having fun, but then get picked up by pirates who have their outlaw port station in orbit.

Have Jod be actually a good guy at the start. We the audience know he's not what he claims to be, but he's charming and legitimately protective of the kids. Let him build a unique relationship with each of them that helps further both their characters: He's building a mentor bond with Wim, he's encouraging Fern's independance, He's recognizing KB's talent, and he's helping Neel to be brave.

This directly interfaces with why the kids want to go on an adventure in the first place: Wim is convinced there's something more to life than the suburbian drugery he was promised, Fern was stifled by constraints and rules, KB was coddled because of her disability. Neel should be our only character who WANTS to go back at the start because he's scared and wants the saftey blanket, but over time learns to come out of his shell and enjoy the wonders of the cosmos. The parts are there in the series already, they just need to be highlighted.

That gets us into Jod's arc. "Pirate with an unfortunate conscience" is a good starting point, but the show bungles his character by saying HEY THIS GUY IS UNTRUSTWORTHY every episode preventing us from ever getting close enough to give his betrayal weight. Instead lets try this: Jod is a goodguy forced to be a badguy, his hero's journey got cut short when his mentor got killed in front of him,...and he bumped around the galaxy taking worse and worse jobs until he ends up a bountyhunter who ends up crossing the wrong crimelord. He gets declared an outlaw, falls in with the pirates, and tries to be a good captian until his "bluster past your inability to be cruel" schtic gets sniffed out by his crew. What he sees in the kids is a chance for redemption, to be the goodguy his mentor wanted him to be, even if he has to tell a LOT of white lies to make them like him.

Jod helps get their vessel ship-shape while taking them out on adventures/field trips where we build up character relationships. Fern gets a semi-dangerous planet where she can cut loose, but learns the value of being a leader ( something something, if you're a captian you look out for your crew). Neel's outings are focused on getting home, but he gets to see some cool stuff that says the rest of the galaxy isn't so bad. Wim gets to visit the ancient Jedi temple of his dreams and we can have a sad meditation on what it means to follow the force in a galaxy without the order. Jod can also have some feelings about this. KB's adventure is sidetracked by her augs malfunctioning, and after the kids are overly protective we get a lesson about not treating people with disabilities as lesser.

Ready for the twist? Jod doesn't betray the kids, he genuinely wants to get them home and be a hero for once in his life. Instead as we keep doing the field trips, we keep running into situations that tempt Jod into going back to his scoundrel/pirate past, but he abstains... until he has to break out the merciless survivor persona to protect them. The kids are HORRIFIED, seeing all the time they've spent together as manipulation. They call him a villain and leave him on whatever plannet they're on as they make the last sprint towards home. That's right: the kids betray HIM

Heartbroken, Jod does a heel turn. The universe has been trying to cut out his heart since day 1 and the kids just went and twisted the knife. If he's not going to get to play the hero then he'll just have to play the villain, he calls the pirates and tells them about the treasure.

The end is mostly the same, except Jod just wants to do a rehash of his previous "Pretend to be scary to get the loot but don't hurt anyone" plan, while the pirates want to take the treasury planet for themselves and force the inhabitants to be their slaves. Queue Jod and the kids forced to reconcile to save their home but fundamentally change it at the same time.

The quietly authoritarian suburbia mystery is actually pretty great and just needs the slightest change: Rather than destroying the overseer, the pirates reprogram it. Forcing the population to work under Orwellian surveillance for an absent republic isn't THAT different than forcing them to toil for a bunch of exploitative marauders. The great work can continue, now there's just someone closer by beneifiting from it. Latestage capitalist decline from global markets to techno-feudalism anyone?

In the end, no one gets what they want, and they're all the better for it. Jod can't be the hero because he has to come clean about his past. The kids get to go home, but they've brought the danger and wonder of the galaxy back with them. Now all of At Attin is looking up at the stars, wondering what adventure will come their way.
