*browses through tumblr tags again*
*misses all the potential that grishaverse could have held*
Seriously, there was some epic story potential there if Bardugo had only taken a few more risks. A few more avenues explored that weren't "typical".
And yes, I guess the mid 2010s (Shadow & Bone was published in 2012 I believe?) there weren't a lot of "risk taking" in the YA genre and I can get that... sort of.
Maybe.
Because the bare bones of the story? The plot itself?
It's so utterly good. And there's depth there between dark and light, and outcast and minorities in a society (the Grisha) and the symbolism between power and corruption, monarchy--
Just--
I could probably rant on how much COULD HAVE BEEN with these books, with this story, and yet what did we ultimately get?
A boring, tired, childhood friends to lovers, power corrupts, keep the status quo story line.
Yawn.
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the idea. The plot. The characters. Everything about it.
I love what it could have been.
I just... wish it was given such a chance to do that?
I want THAT story.
I want the morally grey "how far is too far". I want the revolutions. I want the dark versus light, the yin and yang. I want the comparisons between Nikolai and Aleksander and I want Mal's mediocrity to actually be addressed and dealt with.
I don't want the FMC to ... settle in the end. To make herself smaller so the "ordinary" male love interest is satisfied. Because I keep thinking of the scene of her in the window, playing with the sunlight--
Mal might be happy, but Alina settled.
And that is not the message I want. That is not the message that should have been told, either.
I want the blurry lines between what is right and wrong. What is necessary for the good of many versus the good of the one.
And you know what?
That's where the books failed.
Because I'm sorry. Like Mal all you want, but the guy was just...
So far below mediocre it was ridiculous.

You guys remember that short lived Jurassic Bark Castaway AU? Where everyone was in groups on different islands and Roxy, Monty and Chica become a Thing cause it's Jurassic Bark?
Castaway AU that's the same except Cassie is a mutt puppy that's also there in the group with the three of them and a Mini. I want Roxy to teach her how to hunt seagulls in the most wolf-like way possible and Cassie to be nervous and hesitant cause she's always been told not to do that... She fails countless times when she finally decides to ask Roxy to teach her and she's so frustrated by it until she finally catches one, fucking devours it and Roxy ends up gently carrying her back to camp cause she's in a food coma lmao Roxy is so fucking proud of her oh my god
Cassie waking up a few hours later, still sleepy as hell and immediately getting swamped in praise cause she did it!!! Wooo!!! She's worked so hard for this!!! They're so proud of her!!! Baby's first kill!!!

"I hate to make orphans of your children Kirkland."
"Funny, I was going to say the same about your daughter."
Francis' family fled to England in 1791 as many noble families did at the onset of the French Revolution. Francis was close friends with Alasdair, and by extension he and Arthur interacted very frequently. Despite antagonism on both parts, the two grew fond of each other. Arthur especially grew attached and developed feelings for the older Francis (that were unrequited at the time). As such, Arthur was stung when Francis returned to France in 1800 and grew bitter at the perceived abandonment. Their relationship soured further when Francis married soon after and became focused on court life. It was around this time that Igraine, Arthur's mother, died as well. Being fourteen and himself, instead of dealing with his problems in a healthy and normal way, Arthur chose to join the navy.
Over the course of his time at sea Arthur had his four children and rose in the ranks of the British Navy, especially successful after returning to European waters. In the meantime, Francis had a daughter, Genevieve, and his wife died. Though the two initially exchanged letters, when the war between France and England became imminent, the relationship truly became broken.
By 1810, the two have become rivals so fierce they put Napoleon and Admiral Nelson to shame. The rivalry is all the more intense because of their shared past... and newer "tensions" that have developed between the two.
