WIP Muminvaters wild bewegte Jugend - Tove Jansson (the exploits/ memoirs of moominpappa)
Part II
This time just a quick in between of the endbands. The bead is a bit messy. I have no idea why I keep forgetting whether I have wound the thread around one or both of the other threads, but well, that’s how it is now and I didn’t feel like doing it over.
As usual I have sewn around a thread wrapped in schirting to skip a couple of tie downs as well as keep the thread in place. The last pictures shows the endband backed with a thin japan paper to give a bit of additional support.

I bought Fuji Tire silk thread because I read that it was supposed to be the best for hand sewing, but I have not been at all impressed with it. Not only does it tangle as much as any other thread, but it unravels while I'm sewing with it!

Suspended by a Silk Thread
You often hear the expression that you should stand in both tai chi and qigong as though you are ‘suspended by a silk thread’.This is open to misinterpretation, as the implication is that you hold your head very upright. I certainly spent many years doing just that in the name of good posture, and regularly gave myself a headache as a result. How do you do it? The first thing about it is that…

My mom asked me to mend this top for her last time she visited. It's silk and very old; i mended it in the past (very badly) and I think my mom mended it before that as well. There was 2 layers of mending. Also some staples. The original seams are totally gone, so I will need to reassemble it.
Anyway, I took the old mending out as it had completely deteriorated and also was very badly done. Then I washed it... the dye bled a TON, but it did need to be washed. Idk. Now I'm darning the holes; after that I will try to gently iron it, and then reassemble it. I'm sure I won't have time for all of this before she gets here again this week given that darning this tiny spot has taken half an hour already. Oh well. It's not like she's paying me and this is a lot of work (ngl, would not have taken it on if I'd realized the condition it was in) so it takes as long as it takes.

Headbands
Different cores, materials to cover them with and thread.
I mostly use buttonhole silk for sewing headbands. I know some find it too thick, but I’m not patient enough to use silk sewing yarn. I would always stick to silk though. You can see clearly the difference in sheen to cotton and polyester. It’s also smoother and I find cotton, even the smoothest one, looks always a bit fuzzy in comparison.
For the cores I use different materials depending on the shape and diameter I want for my headbands. All I want there is an even thread with no nubs or knobs. Most of the time I use a thread covered with schirting (a plain weave, dressed and calendered fabric). this can also be done with a thin paper (I usually use japanese paper then) but actually I prefer the fabric for the additional support it gives the headbands while stitching through it. Paper gets very unstable with the perforation. I also I get away with fewer deep stitches into the middle of a signature In the picture are two threads I have used for headbands and the one I sew most of my books with in comparison.
The lowest row shows some leather cut offs backed with parchment cut offs. Those are a bit tricky to cut. I want one side with a 90° angle to rest on top fo the edge. The other one with a slanted angle is to point up. The parchment covered side is directed towards the cover on the spine and the smaller part parallel to it points to the front. Then I cover them with a thin japanese paper to glue them to spine of the book block.
Actually that covering with paper or fabric can be skipped, I find it easier to work headbands when I don’t have to hold down the core though. I have sewn french double headbands too, using a core made of rolled up paper (we used cigarette papers without the sticky stripe), but it was rather wobbly until I was far enough in to secure them firmly to the block. Making the core with rolled up paper has plenty of advantages though. You get a very firm and even core, you can add as much paper as you want until the thickness you need/want is reached, the paper is sturdy and flexible at the same time and such, It takes a bit practice and equipment though and I ‘m simply happy enough with the cores I have so I don’t make cores from paper.

Officially done watching Ripper Street and I recommend it so much!!
I will take that laudanum tho @corpyburd
I will say that Susan Hart/Caitlin Swift is my favourite character (which tbh she probably should be just for being played by MyAnna) because she is such a complex character in my opinion. MyAnna plays her beautifully. I truly believe that she wanted to be a good person but basically every choice she made resulted in her being portrayed as this evil woman, which was especially hard to watch because in most scenes you could just see the pain and the anguish in her eyes, the scene with Jackson in season 3 is a great example of her being very aware of the situation she put herself in and showed her guilt over it. I loved her because even though she wanted to be a good person she was aware that she made choices ‘good’ people wouldn’t and she does a lot of good anyway but she doesn’t even take credit most of the time. In the end even though it pained me greatly I knew she would accept her fate and hang, which broke my heart because she was and is my favourite character.
And another thing, even though her relationship with Matthew was toxic, unhealthy most of the time (almost all of the time tbh) it was epic, I loved it. They were destined for one another and it shows. It was hard to watch when he was with another but I always knew that they would end up together anyway because, to me, he clearly loved her for the entire duration of the show even though they fought more than anything else. Every time they called each other by their original names I got so soft and giddy idk
Reid often annoyed me though 🙄 but even with that the show was still enjoyable, it’s amazing actually, I finished it and immediately started rewatching my favourite episodes that’s how captivating it is
