How do you draw Abodes Dreads/Braids? I'm a black creator and still (embarrassingly) struggle with them in the arcana style. (And in general XD) the way you draw her is gorgeous. And I must know the magic you poses.

Nothing to be embarrassed for! Unfortunately there's not much reference for black hair in the Arcana, so we all have to guess. I'd highly recommend looking at @kianamaiart and Simkray's hair brushes for other examples of stylising black hair (if anyone has examples of black hair in angular art styles, please share!!)

Dreads and braids are both segmented styles which makes their basic construction similar, however dreads are stiffer and hang less than braids, which are quite heavy

She usually pulls her hair back so I only have to pay attention to the hairline, but I draw each dread as a somewhat stiff tube. Where it connects to the scalp I feather in short, fine lines for the edges/thin hair that's attached to the skin.

To show the twisted texture of dreads, I add curved lines along each one. For me, this is a good balance of detail for the style (though I can still get tired of lineart -_-)

Then, as a final detail, I give Abosede imperfect ends, topping most dreads off with a thin twist. This is optional as some dreads don't have this.

Then finally, for colour. I take reference for how they render ropes and add a series of light lines along each dread. Dreads don't reflect much light, so these are pretty faint.

For some braided hairstyles, you just replace the tubes I use for dreads with a simple plait pattern (as seen in Lucio's masquerade outfit). If you're aiming for cornrows, instead of the segments, draw the tubes along the scalp with sharp ends. Then fill them with a plait pattern. For extra detail, you can hatch lines in between the cornrows where the hair is pulled into the braid.

Braids have stronger highlights than dreads, and I tend to dot them in the centre of each part.

I have Simkray’s Brushes; they’re braids though, not dreads lol (but the brush set does have a brush for dreads!)

Blacktober Day 13: Sky fro @simkray's webcomic, Not Another Cliche!

I can’t remember any other webcomics that are on here but I’ll go ahead and boost some others that aren’t on tumblr. I hope the creators don’t mind ^^ (tumblr won’t allow me to attach links to text and when it does it never saves, so I’ll just paste the links separately under a cut)

1.) Icy Copper

This one’s on Tapas and Webtoons. It’s called Icy Copper, and, without giving too much away I guess, it’s about this boy named Copper who gets lost in a world that is very different from his own. I absolutely love the art style and earthy colors. I love the characters a lot and the is very interesting. And there’s cool shapeshifting goats/bovine/moose/reindeer/etc.!! As of rn it updates every Friday. The creator is @toivoshi!

2.) Lumi and the Great Big Galaxy

This one’s also on Tapas and Webtoons as well. To put it short, it’s about aliens and goddesses! And a little girl, Siona, who wishes on a little star named Lumi. It’s currently on hiatus but chapter two starts in September! The art and characters are very cute! Quick warning tho, there is a depiction of abuse at some point. It never actually shows the abuse but it definitely shows by having a character bearing bruises, another character off screen yelling and banging on the door. It’s definitely depicted as a bad thing and it does give a warning before the scene starts. The creator is @starteas!! They have a Twitter as well, and even have an animated short about latgbg on YouTube!

3.) Bow of Silver

This one’s from the same creator of latgbg. It’s only on Webtoons as of rn. It’s relatively new, only 2 parts of the prologue is up rn, so idk too much about it so here’s the official summary: “in a world destined to be consumed by the all powerful void, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to try and save their world they call home.”

4.) Not Another Cliche!

This one’s also on Tapas and Webtoons. Created by @simkray, @SimkrayINK on Twitter. It’s a very interesting virtual reality story where everything is like a video game! Art style is very cute and I absolutely love the colors! I love the characters as well and the story is fun! Looks like updates don’t have a strict schedule, only updates when it’s ready but they’re usually on Fridays. Looks like it’s on hiatus rn.

5.) Never Satisfied

This one has its own website. It’s about magician apprentices, class differences, and how hard it can be to understand others. It’s created by @cornhime on Twitter (idk if he has a tumblr). The art and colors are very pleasing and I love the characters a lot! The story is very interesting as well.

6.) Scarlet Hunt

This one also has its own website! It’s created by @limereptile, tho they don’t seem to be active in tumblr. Their Twitter is @limereptileart! Fun fact: they were a flipnote animator I loved as a kid and it makes me happy to come back and see what they’ve been doing and see that they have a webcomic! Idk when it updates but the latest one was 3 days ago so if it has a schedule, it’s at least on Tuesdays? This comic is about these cute creatures who want to put a stop to strange phenomenons happening in their home! The artstyle and colors are very pleasing and the story is interesting! The characters are also lovable.

And I think that’s all the webcomics that I like that I can think of rn that aren’t being posted on tumblr! Again, I hope the creators don’t mind me boosting their stories ^^, I may add more in the future.
