The idea of Skulktech 9.9 from The Ultimate Enemy is absolutely hilarious.

Like imagine: you start out, you're a human. Probably one of the earliest computer scientists. Then you die maybe, idk, in the 80s? Is that where Technus's slang is from?

Whatever. Point is you're dead. Ghost now. Got cool tech powers. Fast-forward a couple decades and you make an enemy in a teenager who's also a ghost but kinda sorta not really dead? It's complicated BUT basically that kid ends up getting real sad before fucking himself up severely by combining with another ghost and nearly wiping out the entire planet.

And to protect yourself against this guy you team up with this other ghost but he's actually just this little frog-man-blob-thing that was probably never alive in the first place, point is he has a really cool robot suit. And since tech is your entire deal, you decide to team up. You reside in his suit with him as his operating system, essentially, and help him make improvements to it.

And like...neither of you have really said anything about it...

the TUE timeline is a paradox

as in so much a paradox that it never should have been a possible timeline in the first place. the kind of "accidentally-kill-your-own-grandmother" type paradox. it's the kind of thing that is so extremely obvious in hindsight but i rarely ever see talked about, so here i am, talking about it, bc it's fascinating and i can't stop thinking about it.

we kind of have to work our way backwards to really see the series of cause-and-effects that set the TUE timeline into motion. going in reverse order, this is the initial series of events that happens to set the TUE timeline into motion, before Clockwork's intervention:

Dark Danny/Dan/Phantom/whatever you call him is created from the fusion of Vlad and Danny's ghost halves

Danny is either sent or chooses to go live with Vlad after the death of his family and friends

Jack, Maddie, Jazz, Sam, Tucker, and Mr. Lancer are all killed due to the explosion of an overheating vat of Nasty Sauce. it is unknown where Danny is

Danny cheating on the CAT prompts Mr. Lancer to call Jack and Maddie and have them meet him at the Nasty Burger to discuss things

Danny cheats on the CAT, using a packet containing the test answers

that list leaves a lot to be desired. it seems straightforward enough, but there are a lot of plot holes that are strangely unanswered. how did Danny get the test answers to cheat in the first place? why would Sam, Tucker, Jazz, and Danny all be at the Nasty Burger when it explodes, when Mr. Lancer only called Jack and Maddie? what even caused the Nasty Burger to be damaged and the vat to start overheating?

yes, it could all be explained away by "something else happened to cause all that" but the circumstances are so strangely specific that chalking it all up to a shrug-and-walk-away thing completely undermines the entire story in the first place.

the general idea that the episode clearly wants us to take away by the end is that Danny cheating on the CAT causes the bad future. thus, Danny not cheating on the CAT averts it. the episode achieves this extremely well, in fact; for the past nearly 20 years since its premiere, that's what fans have generally taken from this episode.

let me state that again, just to be explicitly clear: this episode wants us to understand that the key event in causing the bad future is Danny cheating on the test

now, that being said, let's list out the series of key events that leads to the bad future as we see them play out from Clockwork and the Observants' perspective. again, we'll go in reverse order to see the causes and effects, but this time we'll start with the explosion itself since we know how the story really ends:

Jack, Maddie, Jazz, Sam, Tucker, and Mr. Lancer are all killed when the vat of Nasty Sauce they are gagged and bound to explodes, with Danny witnessing this firsthand

Danny cheating on the CAT prompts Mr. Lancer to call Jack and Maddie and have them meet him at the Nasty Burger to discuss things

Danny cheats on the CAT, using a packet containing the test answers

The Nasty Burger is pushed into a further state of disrepair when Danny fights SkulkTech 9.9. this also puts the heating node into close contact with the vat of Nasty Sauce

SkulkTech 9.9 is sent by Clockwork to distract Danny from looking at the CAT test answers

Danny accidentally obtains the CAT test answers when he is thrown back from the force of an explosion at the Nasty Burger while fighting Box Lunch

Clockwork brings Box Lunch to the present to fight Danny

notice how in that list, Danny cheating is not the inciting incident. if the true cause of the bad future was actually Danny cheating on the test, then it would follow that it should be the last event on that list, making it the first event in the series of dominoes, so to speak. even more importantly...

Danny doesn't even have the means to cheat before Clockwork begins intervening.

in fact, it's only because of Clockwork's initial intervention that Danny even obtains the test answers in the first place. for Danny, cheating was never even an option on the table until then. in other words, had Clockwork never intervened, then the bad future would never have been possible to begin with. the entire premise is a paradox, and Dark Danny's timeline should never have existed in the first place.

of course, this raises as many questions as it answers. why did the Observants see this as Danny's future in the first place? why did they also not go after Vlad for being, quite literally, half the reason Dark Danny exists (as i question in this post here)? what on earth is Clockwork playing at, deliberately setting the events of the TUE timeline into motion only to purposefully reverse the deaths of Danny's friends and family in the end?

there are so many theories and possibilities people can run with, given those questions, so i'll leave it to you to tell me in the notes what you think hehe

personally i use it as fodder for my "becoming Ghost King is Danny's ultimate destiny" conspiracy theory, but that's a post for another day :P

MSA X DP: The Ultimate Enemy Chapter 6: Fights for Skulktech 9.9/They going to Clockwork's lair/Watches the destroyed ruin by Dark Danny, Dark Sophie, Midnight Dan 

Danny, Sophie, and Dan barely miss getting slammed by a cluster of arms. Going intangible, they snag Tucker, Sam, Monty, Elise, Susan, and Henry and fly them out of the room, then return through the door. Skulktech knocks him around for a bit, then grabs him by the neck and holds him up.

Sophie and Dan: Danny! *grabbed other clusters of arms*

ST (Skulker): Say goodbye,

ST (Technus): Ghost Children!

They lift a claw arm, which begins to spin like a scalesaw. Suddenly their gauntlet starts beeping the tune to Reveille.

ST (Skulker): Someone's hacked into the system? Again?! I thought we fixed that!

ST (Technus): We did! We must have accidentally synced up with somebody else's PDA!

Skulktech goes intangible, and their jets fire off. Dropping Danny, Sophie, and Dan, they take off through the ceiling. The door opens and Tucker, Sam, Monty, Elise, Susan, and Henry come in.

Tucker: Wow. I can still hack into his operating system with my handheld computer. I don't know whether that's exciting or depressing. 

Elise: I can hack off his tech.

Henry: I do hack skills.

Danny: [leaping to his feet] Come on, follow me! [Going intangible, he flies up through the ceiling]

Sophie and Dan: Going on! (Going to Danny chase after Skultech)

Tucker: ... We'll walk.

Danny, Sophie and Dan flies after Skulktech across the evening sky. Below, at Casper High, Mighty Falcon, University School, Jazz and Lancer are talking, while Mr. Jerry is thinking of Danny, Sophie or Dan not done yet to answers C.A.T. tests

Jazz: So you're saying Danny stole the C.A.T. test answers? But how?

Arthur: (Mind: Uh oh, not good! I think my Sister has not done yet before ready to answer!)

Jane: Not good...

Mr. Lancer: I don't know. [holding up the briefcase] Unless your two brothers and your one sister suddenly gained the ability to turn invisible and reach through solid objects?

Jazz: [cringing] But Mr. Lancer, you still have no proof Danny took the test answers.

Mr. Lancer: Fair enough. They have up until the test to return the answers. But if they cheat, I won't just fail them. I'll destroy their future.

Back in the air, Danny, Sophie, and Dan are still chasing Skulktech

ST (Skulker): What are you waiting for? Activate the Purpleback Gorilla Override!

ST (Technus): Don't tell me how to do my job!

Danny, Sophie, and Dan zaps them with ectoblasts, and they fall from the sky to crash into the ruin of the Nasty Burger. We see that the heating element is still on, the meter inching higher. They blast off again.

ST (Technus): Activating Phantom Palm Pummeler!

Their hand opens, sending out a bluewhite ray that catches Danny, Sophie, and Dan and knocks them off course, smoking. It hits them again and they reverts to human forms, then falls a short way before going back to ghost forms.

Danny: You're shorting out my powers?!

Sophie: Not take my powers!?

Dan: You take my powers!? Not good!

ST (Skulker): Indeed. Pummeler might not work on you in the future, but we had a feeling it would work on you here.

Danny: The Future?

Sophie and Dan are surprised to hear that the futures

Sophie: Wait, it’s the future?

Dan: ! The Future? Do they have alternate timelines for the Future?

ST (Technus): [laughing] Oh, I love it. You're much less powerful than the other Phantoms we have to deal with!

A third blast hits them, turning them into humans.

Danny: What are you two talking aboooou [falling] aaaagh! [he catches himself one-handed on a flagpole. Danny looks up.] Wow. That flagpole thing works? I thought for sure it would [the flagpole snaps] breeaaaak!! [He falls and bounces off an awning into a pile of trash bags.] Guess I don't have a future as an Olympic gymnast. [An arm snakes through the pile and grabs him around the middle, zapping him.] Aaaaaaaugh! [It slams him to the ground.]

Sophie: AHHH! [she catches herself one-handed on a flagpole. Sophie looks up.] Phew, Huh? [the flagpole snaps] Breeaaaak!! AHHH! [It slams her to the ground.]

Dan: AHHH! [he catches himself one-handed on a flagpole. Dan looks up.] Phew, ?! [the flagpole snaps] AHH!!! [It slams him to the ground.]

ST (Skulker): You don't have a future, period!

ST (Technus): Not anymore!

Tucker VO: I wouldn't bet on that.

Elise VO: Not done yet!

Henry VO: What do you think of this?

Tucker, Sam, Monty, Elise, Susan, and Henry come running up, Tucker running the override on his PDA. A red laser hits Skulktech and they short out, falling. As they fall they catch themselves on a flagpole.

ST (Skulker) and (Technus): Aw poo

ST (Technus): Wow, that flagpole thing-

It snaps and they fall, crashing to land doubled over a lamppost. We see the CW medallion around their neck.

Danny: [still trapped in the cuffed arm] Way to go, guys!

Sophie: [still trapped in the cuffed arm] Not right, guys freed them off!

Dan: [still trapped in the cuffed arm] Not good! They got off!

Sam: Come on, Tucker, let's see if we can get this off!

Sam grabs the cuff and Tucker grabs Sam as they try to wrench it open, Monty and Susan try to free them, and Elise and Henry try to get off. Skulktech's medallion falls off and tinks to the ground, and they start to glow blue-white. The glow races along the arm, enveloping them, and they all vanish.

The scene switches to the inside of Clockwork's Tower. The viewer shows swirls of green, and gears tick and turn everywhere. The viewer blazes, and Skulktech and the trio are thrown through it to land on the floor. The cuff springs open

Tucker: Where are we?

Henry: ??? They are here? Not good...

Elise: Oh my god... Do they have Ghost World?

The three teams wander, looking up into the gear-ridden darkness. They approach a window with a clockface embedded in it.

Danny: I don't know. The Ghost Zone, I think. [We zoom out to see the entire tower, floating in the green haze of the Ghost Zone.] But... no part of the Ghost Zone I've ever seen.

Sophie: Clockwork's time lair home?

Dan: Right, not good what happened to them?

Sam: It happened right after his medallion fell off.

Susan: I noticed that Time Medal? It's the CW logo, the Clockwork short name of CW.

Monty: ??? Clockwork?

Tucker: Then I think I know how to get us back!

Elise: Yes, right! We are trying back to present!

Henry: Right, I think it’s they’re coming back here!

We follow his gaze to a box on the wall, where six more of the medallions hang. Tucker seizes one and puts it around his neck.

Elise and Henry are ideas and get two Time Medals necklaces and put them around their necks.

Tucker: [pumping his arms triumphantly] Haha!

Elise: Got it!

Henry: Right got!

Nothing happens.

Tucker: [Looking around, then dropping his arms.] Nothing, huh.

Elise: Not good happening...

Henry: Not sure, what happened...

Sam: No, but nice bling. [She goes to take a closer look at the viewer.]

Danny: [Looking more closely at Tucker's medallion] I don't like this.

Sophie: I don’t think, used to Time Medalist?

Dan: See it...

Sam: You're going to like this even less.

Monty: Hey guys! I noticed that viewers of the future!

Susan: Not good! Look at the screens!

The Three Teams join Sam, Monty, and Susan at the viewer, where Dark Danny, Dark Sophie, and Midnight Dan are laughing and throwing ectoblasts at screaming people and buildings, then laughing. A label on the screen reads FUTURE: 10 YEARS.

i have SO MANY THOUGHTS abt how dan is a combination of two people. and both future people sent back in time to stop danny from becoming dan were also, in a way, combinations of two people (box lunch being the daughter of two ghosts, and skulktech being literally a fusion)

was this intentional? was it not? i don't know.

but i think about it a lot and i really think the bad future outside of dan is an underutilized concept in fandom.

Okay VERY important Danny Phantom question: does anyone else headcannon that Skulker and Technus are 100% married as Skulktech 9.9 or is it just me?

Well, here we are with yet another request pic, from a DA member who asked me to draw an insertion pic that gives him the chance to be on stage, jamming with one of his favorite Danny Phantom characters, Ember McLain. Well, I hope you enjoy the moment, my friend. Just be advised that Ember has the services of a new bodyguard these days, and he's always "skulking" in the background. Oh, don't worry, Dude. You're in no real danger. In fact, you won't even know he's there. Just make sure you adhere to his one main rule. "Keep your hands to yourself...and you get to keep your hands, PERIOD." Now, I can already hear some of you now..."Wait a minute. That's supposed to be Skulker? But isn't that SkulkTe...?" Well, let me cut you off right there with a quick explanation. For those of you not familiar with my Danny Phantom fanfic series, Technus became bonded to Skulker's armor after the two were simultaneously captured in a fight with Danny and Sam, and the two did end up becoming SkulkTech 9.9 (as seen in the DP ep., "The Ultimate Enemy"). Now in the end, Tucker and Valerie were ultimately able to separate Technus from Skulker's armor, but Skulker kept the upgrades. So that's basically the look he's sporting now.  Anyway, hope you like the pic and all comments will be appreciated. ^_^

I realized something rewatching Danny phantom. technus probably didn't make skulkers suit first tenchnus likes using medals dark with green lines second technus inventions are always exploding or not working right skulker never originally had that problem with his suit.until the PDA was added to it. And in TUE it's showing skulktech 9.9 suit has a lot of problems and bugs and that doesn't make much sense considering all his suits before that never had bugs that needed to be worked out but then I noticed that Johnny's bike has the same color metal oh the gas tank as skulkers suit is made out of and johnny was able to add a mini portal to his bike with no problem he also has mechanical knowledge my head Cannon is that Johnny was the one to design and create skulkers

That's actually sounds pretty plausible. Cool idea!

Another little tidbit from “The Ultimate Enemy” that I notice nobody has mentioned (to my knowledge, anyway): remember Skulktech 9.9? Tucker managed to briefly disable him with his PDA, and wasn’t sure how to feel about still being able to hack into him. Considering 10 years have passed in real time and that we already have technology as advanced as smart phones and such, I have to say that it is pretty sad for that unlikely duo. Your thoughts?

I’ve never thought about this, but yeah, I guess it is kind of sad that their technology apparently hasn’t advanced at all in this time span! Definitely a writer’s contrivance. DP is full of them.
