Broken Promises
Hugh Jackman x f!reader
A/N: I hope I won't trigger someone's serious daddy issues like I did to me lmao. But seriously, I had fun writing this one, too!
Warnings: angst, some swearing here and there, mentions of unavailable parent
---------------------------------------------------
The house was unusually quiet for a Saturday afternoon. Too quiet. I found myself pacing the living room again, eyeing the clock, then the door, and back to the clock. I had done this routine enough times to know how it usually ended. Ethan and Mason were perched on the couch, peeking out the window every now and then, waiting for the unmistakable sound of their fatherâs car pulling into the driveway.
"Mom, when's Dad coming?" Ethan asked for what felt like the hundredth time. His voice had that hopeful, uncertain edge that always tore at my heart.
Ethan was nine now, old enough to sense when something wasnât quite right but still young enough to wish it wasnât true.
I ran a hand through my hair and forced a smile.
"Soon, sweetheart. He said heâd be here."
Ethan nodded, though he didnât look entirely convinced. He was too smart for his own good. Mason, on the other hand, was sprawled across the floor with his toys, blissfully unaware of time and promises. At four, he was still full of that magical childhood innocence where you believe everything will always work out.
The boys werenât the only ones waiting. Hugh, Ava, and Oscar were here too. Ava, Hughâs 12-year-old daughter, was curled up on the couch, nose buried in a book while Oscar, his 17-year-old son, was tapping away on his phone, though he glanced at me from time to time with a knowing look. Hugh was in the kitchen, pretending to busy himself, but I knew him well enough to catch his subtle glances toward the front door. He was watching too.
Waiting.
The doorbell rang, cutting through the tense silence like a knife. Mason jumped up immediately, his little face lighting up with excitement as he dashed to the door. "Daddy!" he shouted, his tiny hands struggling to twist the doorknob before Ethan quickly helped him.
And there he was. Matthew.
My ex-husband.
Standing there with that familiar polished grin, the same one that had fooled me for years before I realized it was more charm than substance.
He looked every bit the smooth-talking lawyer he was, hair neatly combed, wearing an expensive suit that screamed 'I donât have time for this', but here I am anyway.
"Hey, buddy!" Matthew exclaimed as Mason leapt into his arms, his voice dripping with enthusiasm. He shot a quick glance at me, his smile faltering for a second before he smoothly recovered. "Sorry Iâm late. Busy day at work."
"Of course you are." I muttered under my breath. But the boys didnât care.
They only saw their dad, and that was enough for them. Ethan approached more cautiously, his eyes studying Matthew, almost as if he were waiting to see if this time would be different. I knew that look all too well.
"Hey, Ethan!" Matthew said, ruffling his sonâs hair. "Got something for you both." He reached into the sleek black bag slung over his shoulder and pulled out two shiny, brand-new backpacks.
Mason squealed with delight, clutching his in his arms like it was made of gold, while Ethanâs expression shifted from excitement to hesitation.
"Cool, thanks, Dad." He said, a polite smile on his face. I could see the wheels turning in his head, though. A backpack didnât make up for missed promises, no matter how shiny it was.
"Are you gonna come tomorrow?" Ethan asked quietly, looking up at his father with those wide, hopeful eyes that always broke my heart. "For the first day of school?"
"Of course, buddy!" Matthew said without hesitation. He leaned down, crouching to their level and placing a hand on Ethanâs shoulder. "I wouldnât miss it for the world! Iâll be there, bright and early."
I crossed my arms, leaning against the wall, watching this scene play out like it always did. Matthew was nothing if not consistent in his ability to make promises he couldnât keep.
Before I could say anything, Hugh walked out of the kitchen, wiping his hands on a dish towel. His presence was calming, always steady and reassuring. He gave me a small, knowing smile before turning his attention to Matthew.
"Matthew." Hugh said, his voice polite but firm as he extended his hand.
"Hugh." Matthew replied, shaking it with the same rehearsed friendliness he used with clients.
They had met a handful of times, and while Matthew had never said anything outright, I could tell he wasnât thrilled about another man stepping into the lives of his children.
The boys were still fawning over their backpacks when Ava and Oscar joined us in the living room. Ava smiled warmly at Mason, ruffling his hair.
"Nice backpack boys!"
Oscar stood beside Hugh, his tall frame giving him an almost protective air.
"You guys excited for school tomorrow?" he asked, nudging Ethan playfully. Ethan grinned full of excitement.
Matthew didnât stay long. He never did. After about twenty minutes of small talk and handing out gifts, he was already looking at his watch. "Alright, Iâve gotta go." he said, standing up and straightening his suit. "But Iâll see you guys tomorrow, okay? Bright and early as I said!"
The boys hugged him, clinging to him like they always did, desperate for any time they could get with him. And just like that, he was gone.
I watched the door close behind him, and a familiar tightness settled in my chest. The boys turned back to their new backpacks, their excitement renewed, but I couldnât shake the feeling that tomorrow would end in disappointment. Again.
Hugh caught my eye from across the room, sensing my unease. He walked over, his hand resting on the small of my back, and leaned in to whisper. "You okay?"
I sighed, rubbing my temples. "I donât know. I want to believe him, but⌠I canât keep letting the boys get hurt. Ethanâs starting to get it, Hugh. He knows when Matthewâs lying now."
Hughâs expression softened, and he pulled me closer. "Hey, Iâll be there. Weâll be there. They wonât be alone. I promise."
I leaned into him, closing my eyes, letting his warmth seep into me. "I donât know what Iâd do without you."
"Youâll never have to find out, love." he whispered into my hair, kissing the top of my head.
The next morning, I woke up to the smell of pancakes. The house was already buzzing with energy, far earlier than I expected. I shuffled downstairs, still groggy, only to stop in my tracks at the sight that greeted me.
The living room was transformed. Balloons and streamers hung from the ceiling, and a colorful banner that read 'First Day of School!' stretched across the doorway. The kitchen table was covered in every breakfast food imaginable - pancakes, bacon, eggs, fruit, even little bowls of candy that Mason would definitely notice first.
I blinked, rubbing my eyes. "Hugh, did you"
He turned from the stove, grinning at me like a kid who had just pulled off the best surprise. "Figured weâd make it special."
Tears welled up in my eyes, unbidden, and I pressed a hand to my mouth. "I-I canât believe you did all this!"
Hugh crossed the room in a few strides, pulling me into his arms.
"Itâs their first day of school. Gotta make it a big deal, right?"
The kids came rushing down the stairs next, their faces lighting up at the sight. Ethan and Mason squealed in delight, darting between the living room and the kitchen like it was the best thing they had ever seen.
"This is awesome!" Ethan shouted, his eyes wide with excitement.
Ava grinned as she joined us at the table, patting the seat next to her for Mason, while Oscar laughed at his little brotherâs excitement. "Told you Dad goes all out!" Oscar teased.
Hugh winked at me, flipping another pancake onto the stack.
"It's a big day. Gotta start it right!"
And it was. For a few precious moments, everything felt perfect. The kids were happy, the atmosphere light and joyous, and the worries from yesterday seemed far away.
But when we got to the school, reality came crashing back. We stood outside the classroom door, surrounded by other excited parents and their children, and the boys kept glancing toward the entrance. Waiting.
"Is Daddy coming?" Mason asked again, his voice laced with hope.
"He said he would." I murmured, though I wasnât sure who I was trying to convince anymore.
The minutes ticked by, and the crowd around us thinned as more and more families said their goodbyes and headed inside. But Matthew never showed. And I could see the hope fading from Ethanâs eyes.
Hugh stepped forward, crouching down to their level. "Hey, guys.." he said, his voice soft but upbeat. "Your dadâs probably stuck at work, but that doesnât mean today isnât special. Youâve got all of us here, and weâre so proud of you. Right, Ava?"
Ava nodded, smiling warmly at Ethan. "Youâre gonna rock it, Ethan! I just know it."
Oscar clapped Mason on the back, grinning. "And Mason, you better show them how itâs done, okay?"
Mason giggled, his spirits lifting, but Ethan was still quiet. Hugh reached out, gently tilting Ethanâs chin up. "Youâre gonna be amazing today. And no matter what, weâre always here for you. Okay?"
Ethan swallowed, his eyes glistening a little, but then he nodded, managing a small smile. "Okay."
I pulled him into a hug, my heart aching for him. "I love you so so much, Ethan. Youâre going to do great!"
Mason was next, clinging to my leg before I knelt down to hug him properly.
"Be good, okay? Listen to your teacher, and have fun. I love you so much!" He nodded eagerly, bouncing on his toes, the weight of disappointment not yet touching him the way it did Ethan.
We said our goodbyes to Ava and Oscar, sending them off to their own classes, before Hugh and I turned to leave. As we walked out of the school, my chest felt tight.
The weight of everything - the missed promises, the endless hope that Matthew would change, the constant pain in Ethanâs eyes - was pressing down on me harder than usual.
I could feel Hughâs arm around my shoulders, warm and reassuring, but it wasnât enough to chase away the hurt. We stepped out into the parking lot when I heard someone call my name.
"Y/n! Wait!"
I froze, my blood running cold as I turned to see Matthew jogging up the sidewalk, his suit jacket slightly askew, as if he had hurried over at the last minute.
My stomach twisted in knots.
Now?
After all this time, after the boys had gone inside? My hands balled into fists at my sides.
"Iâm sorry!" Matthew said, breathless, holding up his hands in a placating gesture. "I got caught up at the office, but Iâm here now. I didnât want to miss it."
Something in me snapped. All the hurt, all the frustration, all the times he had let our boys down over the years, rushed to the surface. I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes, my vision blurring as they spilled over before I could stop them.
"Youâre sorry?" I spat, the words escaping me in a choked sob. I stormed toward him, fists clenched, my body trembling with rage. "You missed it, Matthew! You missed everything! They went into class without you!"
He looked startled, stepping back as I shoved his chest. "Y/n, come on, I said Iâm sorry- "
"Sorry doesnât fix it!" I screamed, slamming my fists into his chest again, harder this time.
"Do you have any idea how much Ethan was looking for you? How many times he asked about you?! Mason kept asking when youâd get here, and you didnât show up! You werenât here, Matthew! Again!"
I kept hitting his chest, my tears flowing freely now. My voice was loud, too loud, but I didnât care. The dam had broken, and everything I had bottled up for years came pouring out.
"You promised me! You promised them youâd be here, and you werenât! You never are!"
Matthew tried to catch my wrists, his face pale, eyes wide. âY/n, stop- "
But I couldnât stop.
The pain of watching my boys be disappointed time and time again was too much.
"You donât get it! You donât get to swoop in at the last second and act like everythingâs fine!" I sobbed, my fists still pounding against his chest until I felt Hughâs hands gently but firmly wrap around me, pulling me back.
"Y/n.." Hughâs voice was steady, his grip gentle but unyielding as he pulled me away from Matthew. "Thatâs enough."
I collapsed into Hughâs chest, my body trembling as I sobbed, the fight draining out of me as quickly as it had come. Hugh held me close, one hand cradling the back of my head, while I clung to him, my tears soaking into his shirt. He rocked me gently, whispering soothing words I couldnât quite make out, but the warmth of his embrace calmed me, slowly but surely.
Matthew, still standing a few feet away, looked completely stunned, his mouth opening and closing as if he didnât know what to say. He ran a hand through his hair, trying to regain his composure.
"Look.. Iâm sorry.." he said again, his voice weaker this time. "I really did try to make it.:
"Thatâs the problem, Matthew.." I whispered, my voice hoarse from crying. "You always try. But trying isnât enough anymore."
Matthewâs face twisted with frustration. "Iâm doing my best! Itâs not like Iâm trying to miss these things, you know. I have a job- "
"A job?!" I cut him off, my voice rising again despite myself. "I have a fucking job too! You think thatâs an excuse? Ethan sees it, Matthew! He knows when youâre lying. And Mason? Heâll start seeing it soon too. They donât care about your job. They care about you being here!"
Matthew clenched his jaw, his own frustration building.
"I donât have the luxury of just playing house like you do, y/n! I have more responsibilities!"
"Playing house?" I laughed bitterly, shaking my head. "You have no idea what it's like to raise them. No idea what it feels like to watch their hearts break every time you donât show up!"
"You donât think I care?" Matthew shot back, his voice growing louder. "Iâm doing the best I can with the time I have!"
"And itâs never enough.." I whispered, the fight leaving me again. I wiped at my eyes, exhausted.
"Hey." Hughâs voice cut through the tension like a knife. His tone was sharp, but not raised. "Thatâs enough. You should be ashamed of yourself, Matthew."
As soon as Hugh said it, I saw Matthewâs posture change.
His eyes narrowed, his fists clenching at his sides. For a split second, I could see the switch flip in him, the smooth, collected persona cracking. Matthew wasnât used to being challenged, especially not by someone like Hugh. Not by someone who had quietly stepped into the role Matthew had always fumbled.
"Excuse me?" Matthewâs voice was low, his eyes locked on Hugh. "Who the hell do you think you are?"
Hugh didnât flinch.
He met Matthewâs glare head-on, his expression calm but firm.
"I think Iâm the man whoâs been here for your kids when you couldnât be bothered to show up. And Iâm telling you - what youâre doing is hurting them and y/n."
Matthew took a step forward, his face flushed with anger now. "You think you can just walk in and play daddy, huh? That you know what itâs like to juggle everything I do? You donât get to stand there and judge me, Jackman."
I could feel the tension crackling between them, thick and heavy. Hugh was calm, still, like a rock against the storm that was Matthewâs rising temper.
My heart was pounding, the last remnants of my tears still clinging to my lashes as I watched, half-dazed from the emotional rollercoaster of the last few minutes.
Matthew sneered, stepping even closer. "You think you're so perfect, donât you? Mr. Hollywood star, swooping in to save the day. Youâre not their father. Youâre nothing to them. Just a simple placeholder."
Hughâs jaw tightened, and I saw the muscle twitch there. But he didnât react the way Matthew clearly wanted him to. Instead, he exhaled slowly and said, "Youâre right. Iâm not their father. But Iâm the one they can count on. Iâm the one whoâs here when they need someone. Thatâs what matters."
Matthewâs face twisted in frustration, his fists clenching tighter. He pointed at Hugh, his voice rising.
"You have no idea what itâs like to have your own life, your own responsibilities, and try to make time for everyone. Itâs easy for you to stand there and act like the hero when youâve got nothing else pulling you in a million directions!"
I stepped forward before Hugh could respond, my voice shaking with anger. "You think Hugh doesnât have responsibilities? You think he doesnât make sacrifices? He does all of this for our kids while you barely lift a finger! And you know what? He never complains! Never makes excuses. He just shows up. Thatâs what they need, Matthew - someone who shows up."
Matthewâs gaze flicked between me and Hugh, his expression growing darker by the second. He laughed sarcastically.
"Youâre really going to take his side over mine, y/n? After everything?"
I scoffed, wiping the lingering tears from my eyes.
"I'm taking my sonsâ side, Matthew. Because they deserve better than what youâre giving them. This isnât about sides. Itâs about whatâs right for them."
Matthew again let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head. "Unbelievable. You really think I donât care, donât you? That I donât want to be there for them?"
"Well, If you wanted to be here, you would be." Hugh cut in, his voice sharp now, no longer willing to play nice.
"You wouldnât be showing up late, making excuses, and disappointing them over and over. Youâd be here, Matthew. Itâs that simple."
"That simple?" Matthewâs voice was nearly a growl now.
"You have no idea what I go through - what I have to balance! Itâs not as easy as you think, playing âSuper Dad.â!" He stepped forward again, and for a second, I thought it might come to blows.
But Hugh, steady and calm, took a deliberate step forward too, closing the distance.
"As we said before.. Itâs not about being perfect. Itâs about being there. No oneâs asking for you to be a superhero. They just want their dad to show up. You owe it to them to do better."
The tension between them felt like it was about to explode, and I could barely breathe, watching it unfold. I knew Matthewâs temper. I had seen it flare too many times. And I knew Hugh was protective, fiercely so, but not one to back down when it came to the people he loved.
Matthewâs nostrils flared, his fists still clenched at his sides.
"You think youâre so much better than me, donât you? You think you can just walk into my life and replace me?"
Hughâs gaze was steady, unwavering, but he couldn't help himself and let out a soft laugh.
"I donât want to replace you, Matthew. But I wonât stand by and watch those boys get hurt because you canât figure out your priorities."
I felt my body trembling again, but this time from the frustration and helplessness of it all. I had spent so long trying to protect my boys from this, trying to shield them from the disappointment of their fatherâs broken promises. And now, here it was, boiling over in front of me.
"Enough!" I yelled, my voice breaking as I stepped between them.
"This isnât about either of you! Itâs about Ethan and Mason. And Iâm so tired of seeing them get hurt because you canât keep your word."
Matthew blinked at me, his anger momentarily giving way to something else - something that looked like shame. But just as quickly, his walls went back up, and he shook his head, stepping back.
"This is ridiculous." he muttered, shoving his hands in his pockets. "I didnât come here to be ganged up on."
I crossed my arms, feeling the weight of exhaustion press down on me.
"Then what did you come for, Matthew? Because if it wasnât to be there for your sons before they go attend their very first day of school, I donât see the point."
For a long moment, Matthew just stared at us, his jaw tight, his expression a mixture of anger and something else I couldnât quite place. Then, without another word, he turned on his heel and stormed off down the sidewalk, leaving us standing there in the empty schoolyard.
I let out a shaky breath, my legs suddenly feeling like jelly as the weight of the moment caught up with me. Before I knew it, Hughâs arms were around me again, pulling me close, holding me up as I leaned into him.
"You okay, love?" he whispered, his voice gentle, his hand rubbing soothing circles on my back.
I nodded, though I didnât trust my voice just yet. The anger, the hurt, the frustration - it was all still swirling inside me, but Hughâs presence, his steady calmness, helped anchor me.
"I'm sorry.." I whispered, wiping at my tear-streaked face. "I didnât mean to⌠to lose it like that."
"Donât apologize." Hugh said softly, kissing the top of my head. "You had every right to say what you did. He needed to hear it."
I took a deep breath, finally pulling back to look up at him.
"I just⌠I hate that this is what itâs come to. That the boys keep getting hurt like this."
"They have you." Hugh said, his voice firm but full of warmth. "And they have me. Weâll get through this."
I nodded, though my heart still ached. "Thank you." I whispered. "For everything. For being here."
Hugh smiled softly, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear.
"Iâm always here, y/n. You and the boys - youâre my family too."
I felt a fresh wave of emotion wash over me, but this time, it was mixed with gratitude and love.
As we walked back to the car, hand in hand, I knew that no matter what happened with Matthew, no matter how many times he failed to show up, we would be okay. Because Hugh was right.
We had each other.
And that was enough.

âUmaasaâ

sypnosis; I searched our place â our home , yet you weren't there , how can I heal a wound made by love?
cw; angst , crush , sad , tears , guilt , freindship falling out, umaasa is a Filipino word that means something like believing, expecting , google it for a more deeper understanding , reconciliation
Now playing; âUmaasaâ By Caelin
Manon has been your friend for god knows how long , you moved to Switzerland at a very young age due to some family issues and the very first person you met was her
she was kind , smart and funny â she never failed to make you laugh â she loved painting and most times you two would paint together or just admire the mountains of Switzerland
ââ§Ë*°ŕż
"i know" Manon says dragging out the word
"yeah it's like so stupid â anyways you did the math assignment?" you ask
"no...." Manon replies guilty
"i knew it , heres my notebook give it back before third period okay?" you said handing over your math notebook before walking to the canteen to buy some overpriced chips
you came back to Manon with her favorite soda and some babybel cheese
"aww thanks" she said as an infectious grin spreads on her face
you softly grin back and nod
"anywaysâdid you see Lara today" Manon ask â yes you were very jelous I mean why Lara? , yes she's perfect but it hurts you
"oh uhm i haven't" you reply your voice quickly changed which didn't go unnoticed to the older
"what's wrong â c'mon don't tell me you don't like Lara too , shes much more better than you know who" Manon reasons out her voice fades out as all you can hear is blah blah blah
"yeah whatever â besides I have to go to class already" you said taking your notebook and walking to your classroom
ââ§Ë*°ŕż
you never really knew why Manon was so drawn in my Lara
she was pretty
smart
and very popular
but despite the point you didn't see why , buzzed by your thoughts you fail to notice the bell ring and it's officially lunch time
"fuck" you gasp as you run out of the classroom remembering your hang out with Megan And Daniela
as you run thru tight corridors and some smelly students you stop dead in your tracks
Manon was with...Lara
against your better judgement you stayed and stared at them anyways , they laughed and got closer as time progressed
why can't it be you?
your last string was when Manon invited Lara to an hang out you made
"fuck this" you whisper , running to Megan and Danielas dorm
ââ§Ë*°ŕż
"I think they're cute" Megan says
"yeah , I mean Manon is like a nerd and Lara's a social butterfly" the latina follows
your frown deepens I mean even your friends think they match , they click like a puzzle piece
"hey why?" Megan says noticing your reaction
"nothing" you replied shortly
"are you guys coming later , at Manon's house?" you ask , you needed atleast friends there you can't bear seeing Manon and Lara together
"yeah , actually it's already 4pm we should get going" Daniela follows looking at her wrist watch "okay then" Megan said afterwards
ââ§Ë*°ŕż
nothing new was happening in the hang out really , just a bunch of eating and screaming over what to watch on the television
"no twilight!" Manon defends
"but we already watched thatâ9 times! , come on just this once" Sophia pleads
"finee" Manon sighs defeated , it is true that you all already watched twilight more than you can count
the doorbell rings , and in steps Lara how. great. you thought to yourself , the girls gave Manon a knowing look and giggles erupted
maybe you were the problem why can't you be happy for her
were you being selfish?
"damnnn okay Manon" Daniela says , winking at Manon
"hey you might scare her off , come in" Sophia says letting Lara in , she sat next to Manon well atleast when you left the sofa that is
ââ§Ë*°ŕż
the rest of the day you just didn't feel like yourself , you were disassociated
"hey" Yoonchae greets as she sits next to you in the kitchen
"hii Yoon" you respond giving her a smile
"why aren't you out there ,were having fun!" the younger reasons
"jus' not feeling myself, you go back if you need anything just call me okay?" you said trying to brush her off
"that's not true" yoonchae pouts and crosses her arms
"please come outsideâi want you to have fun too!" yoonchae follows
inevitably you agree since who can say no to yoonchae , not you
"finally!" Megan says out loud when she saw you go out
"we missed you!" Sophia jokes
"sorry" you apologize earning you nods of understanding
who found it most suspicious was Manon , you weren't like this at all , she noticed how you look like a defeated puppy just sitting there playing with your shirt
ââ§Ë*°ŕż
7:00 pm
"guys I have to go" Lara says looking at the clock on her phone
the other girls try to make her stay but to no avail Lara had to leave
"see you again soon!" Megan says before Lara disappears behind the door
so instead of saying you were leaving you tried sneaking off when the others were busy cooking and watching movies
"ahem"
you hear someone behind you as you open the door
"I need to uhm- buy something - yeah" nope not working
Manon crosses her hands on her chest , having a questioning look on her face
"oh really?" she ask sarcastically
"okay you got me"
"why are you so distant recently, i feel like I did something to make that happen" The older frowns
"hey no you didn't do anything, i justâdont want to ruin what's perfect you know?" you replied not thinking about what she might think
"what do you mean?" she ask , her gears turning and trying to solve what you meant
"Manon I like you, I know you don't feel the same and for the longest time I tried hiding this feeling but it's so strong" you blurt out , you couldn't look at her at all , your eyes were glued to your hands which wee currently holding onto your phone
"you don't need to say anything I'll just go" you follow walking out , as Manon stood there in shock
ââ§Ë*°ŕż
you tried everything crying, avoiding them , even as far as blocking them on your socials but nothing worked every time you breathe all you see is Manon
you haven't talked to anyone in a week , you ignored every calling out they tried
"y/n! wait up!" you hear someone behind you , you try to walk faster but eventually they caught up
"why have you been ignoring us?" Daniela says her chest heaving from running "this isn't even funny anymore" she follows
"I'm sorry just busy I guess" you shrugged hoping she would stop asking questions
"Megan heard what you told Manon last Friday , we know y/nâavoiding us will just make it weirder please talk to us" the latina begs , so they heard? , you couldn't even be mad at them cause thinking about it ignoring them was too much even for you
"I'm sorry â where are the others?" you ask , thinking about apologizing to each and every single one of them
"come" Daniela says holding your hand and running towards the arts room
ââ§Ë*°ŕż
in the room was yoonchae who was drawing with Sophia
Megan who was on her phone probably watching tiktoks
and Manon just sitting there
"hey guys" the latina announced
everyone looks and was surprised to see you , they ran up to you hugging you telling you how much they miss you
"chill guys" you chuckle
"we missed you" yoonchae pouts and you hug her
"sorryy! , to make it up let's go to the mall I'll treat you guys" you said
"I'm busy" Manon buzzed , you were hurt but whatever
"oh. uhm okay , how about you guys?"
"I'm good " the others said
everything was weird Manon started ignoring you too , and partially it was your fault but was it really? when all you wanted was her to feel happy?
ââ§Ë*°ŕż
"oh hey" you bump into Manon as you were buying some iced coffee
"hey , can we maybe talk?" Manon asks
you weren't ready and obviously she wasn't too but against your judgement you agreed, needing closure
"I'm sorry if I avoided you , I know how you feel about me and you know how I feel" Manon starts
"and I don't want us to drift because of thatâi hope you don't hold any grudge against me and any of the girls" she follows with a smile on her face
"I'm sorry too , i wish you the best obviously, you know I can't leave you" you giggle
as stupid as it sounds you still stayed and befriend her , you loved Manon but if god didn't destined you two why force it? , surely there are other people who would love you the same way you loved Manon but until then your still waiting for the time you find that person.

I have transcended here, so follow my vision:
Jungkook is always taunting the hybe staff that monitors his lives right? What about a fic where he does this because he kinda likes the pretty new IT intern đđ and she is always stressed out working the night shift and wondering is he asleep yet should I end the live? oh no is he about to give a major spoiler, he would not do it right? workout sounds are kinda suspicious and low-key obscene should I "accidentally" end the live?
Hm... warning for like.. jungkook flirting? And suggestive themes lol
Your heart beats faster whenever you get the notification. But not because of the same reasons the fans pulses might race quicker.
No, you personally get palpitations because of him, personally.
You don't even know why he's bitten into you like a stubborn dog like this, not daring to let go, teeth buried deep in your skin. You don't think you're outstandingly pretty, you're not special, you're not even supposed to have any sort of friendly or private contact with him whatsoever. Your job is on the line every time he has his 'fun'. But every time you scold him with that fact, he's got the same answer.
'I've got enough money for both of us, baby.'
You're not sure how the hell the agency has not yet caught onto his games- teasing words never directed at the fans, but you on the other side monitoring- them hearing in on it simply collateral damage. He knows you watch him every time he goes live. Your angry emojis you send him every time he edges on getting inappropriate in front of millions worth it every time, as he has to imagine you angrily scolding him so cutely just like last time you did.
He wonders how long you'll let him toy around with you like this.
He remembers when you ended his live when he fell asleep, calling and ringing his doorbell in panic because of the still burning candle- but when he'd tried to lure you into his claws, offering to have you sleep over at his place since it was late and raining heavily, you'd declined- probably having sensed his actual hidden motive.
You're not easy. And he can't deny that he loves the chase.
At first, it was just fun. He thought if he played it cool and most of all smart enough, you'd eventually cave in- but by now, he's actually become much more personally interested in you. It's not just about what you might feel like all messed up under his hands with his dick balls deep inside you anymore- that's somewhat moved into the background, lust no longer the main reason for his interest.
It's the soft domesticity you offer him here and there, gentle care a man like him can do nothing but fall for.
You're nothing but IT staff, newly hired for your exceptional skills when it comes to recovering data from the most messed up hard drives, and your talent for making sure nothing leaks out where it's not supposed to. You take your job seriously, work with all your soul and energy, always try and do your best even in the most lost-cause-scenarios. But he remembers you restoring almost all of his files after his pc crashed, offering him gentle reassurance and some water to calm him down. And a few weeks later when his tablet was infected with a virus (most likely stemming from the.. not so family friendly he occasionally visits...), you'd simply giggled about it, not making a huge deal out of it, even sharing your homemade food with him in his office while you waited for the new firmware to install.
You cook really well. Not perfect- but perfectly imperfect, just like home cooking is supposed to be. And you're so sweet- it's giving him cavities just thinking of you.
And yeah- you're also called his 'babysitter' whenever he's live randomly at night, since you yourself can't sleep all that much. He wonders if it's insomnia, or another health issue. He wonders if he could do something to help you sleep at night.
He wonders if you'd hold onto him when asleep. He wonders if you like holding hands.
He's asked you these things privately often, at first just to tease, but these days he means those questions. He wants to know more about you, about who you are apart from your job, but you take your role in the company pretty seriously it seems like. You never break your contract, always remind him that you're not allowed to either answer his questions, or have any private contact at all.
And he hates it. He hates that you're so goddamn nice, never daring to break any rules.
"Hm? Ah yes, it's late.." he comments at the chat flowing with thousands of messages, not truly paying attention to them. "Its late, I can't sleep~" He hums, leaning back against his couch, sighing. "Maybe I should eat? I'm not on a diet right now.." he wonders to himself, picking at his new piercing. "..maybe. Would you eat with me?" He wonders, and on the other side of the live, in your office chair, you want to hit your head on your keyboard.
He knows exactly what he's doing. You want to punch that dumb smirk right off his face.
"Hm, would you.. I'll make some food, yes." He nods to himself, getting up to take the phone with him, setting it up in his kitchen. "Late night Ramyeon.. yes." He sings, dancing a little as he opens two bowls. "I'll eat two. I've got.. a big appetite." He says, having turned around to look at the chat again- or more so the camera. "And I'll put some sauce in it too. I like it hot, you know?" He giggles, and you on the other side wonder if it would cost you your job if you 'accidentally' cut the connection.
Instead, you send a red-faced angry emoji and a pointing finger as a warning.
And the moment he receives it he brightly grins laughing to himself. Are you watching him from your office at the company building? Or maybe you watch him from home? Possibly in bed? And if so, are you wearing anything? Images of you in nothing but underwear spark in his mind, making him space out as he leans on the kitchen counter, hand playing with his bottom lip. He'd bet half of his wealth you probably wear cute lacy underwear, with bows in the middle.
He could probably rip the frail fabric of your underwear off your pretty body with his bare hands. He knows he's got the strength for it.
"Hm, maybe I can't finish two though?" He wonders as he fills both bowls up with hot water. "But I'll try.." he sings to himself, not a care in the world while you watch, being tortured by the sight of his broad back. It would be a lie to say that he's not attractive- he knows it too, after all, and you're not blind. You're simply just not putting your job on the line for a simple affair- you won't be used like that.
You've been through that before. You can't do this again.
The rest of his live is uneventful, he doesn't actually eat any of his food, ends the live with the excuse that he's tired after all, and you're finally falling head first in your lap before your phone rings. Accepting it, you don't answer, but his voice on the other end does.
"If you come over now, it'll still be hot when you're here." He chuckles, and you know he refers to the instant food he'd made.
"Jungkook-ssi, I can't do that.!" You groan.
"Why not?" He wonders almost innocently. "Its not like people will know." He tells you.
"I'm not putting my job on the line for.. an affair." You decline. "You might have your fun, but I'll have to deal with the consequences later." You say, and for a moment, there's no sound, before he sighs.
"You know.." he starts, sitting down on a chair at his kitchen table. "..weeks prior I would've given up at this point. Would've told you 'alright, cool' and then let it go, you know?" He tells you, one hand supporting his head while his phone lays on the table. "But I honestly don't wanna just.. have an affair, as you call it."
"Oh?" You scoff. "Jungkook-ssi, I have to end this call. Please refrain from-"
"I want to get to know you." He rushes out. "I.. genuinely want to. I take all of the blame if things go south. I'll make sure you get the best job if Hybe kicks you out, promise." He offers, before he sighs yet again. "Just.. let's just eat ramyon at my place, no strings attached." He asks, and you laugh after a moment, making him grin too.
"Eat ramyeon at your place?" You giggle, and he clicks his tongue.
"You say 'wanna see my cat' these days." He says, and you get up into a sitting position.
"Well, I mean, you were aiming to see a cat, in a way." You attempt to flirt back, and its quiet. "Oh my God sorry, I really shouldn't-"
"No, no-" he laughs. "That was adorable, really." He grins to himself on the other end of the call. "So?"
"I can't." You decline. "I don't have anything else than this job. Please don't make me do this." You say, and he bites his lower lip.
"I meant it." He repeats. "No funny business. Dick stays inside my pants, and I really will make sure to get you a new even better job if someone finds out and gets you fired." He promises.
"How can I trust you?" You ask.
"Have I ever done something to get you into trouble?" He asks, and you think.
"I can think of a few times-" you start, before laughing when he groans out in agony. "The food is cold now anyway." You say.
"I can heat it up." He offers.
"I don't like spicy things." You respond.
"Nothing wrong with being vanilla." He jokes, and you roll your eyes on your side of the call.
"You're such a pervert. What would the fans think?" You scold playfully.
"They love it." He chuckles. "Just like you'll love me."
"Bold claim." You say.
"Just give me a chance." He offers. "One chance to make you fall for me."
"What if you won't fall for me?" You ask.
"Impossible." He hums, voice low as he watches the phone on his table. "Already did."
And you're quiet for a moment, before you sigh.
"I'll bite your hand off if you touch me inappropriately." You threaten, and he laughs.
"And I'll willingly accept my punishment, baby."

Lilanette Week: Body Swap!
Hello there everyone, and welcome back to my insanity! I ran into a few technical issues yesterday, hence the delay, but we're back now and you're getting double the Lilanette! It's a Win-Win, really! Anyway, I only have one more complete fic for this event and it's the Free Space on Saturday, but I figured I should still give you all the cliffnotes that @nicodemoon and I came up with! As an aside, this is a future au taking place sometime during their college years.
So, our story begins with Ladybug, and an Akumatized Villain! Do not ask me what their name is, I beg of thee. Naturally, they have the power to swap bodies between 2 targets, because Chrysalis is very smart. She's already forced the Akuma to blast her, and now only needs either Ladybug or Chat to get hit. Ladybug discerns this by the fact that no civilians are being attacked. Anyway, Chat tries to take the hit for her, but unfortunately...the Akuma just bashes him aside and blasts Ladybug anyway. Marinette opens her eyes to find herself in a dark, cramped place. The Parisian Catacombs, of course. Naturally she immediately notices that she's in Chrysalis' body and detransforms, running around to find a mirror. And when she does...Marinette has no idea who she's looking at. Yes this is inspired by that episode Flash and Lex Luthor from the animated series. Of course she asks Nooroo for the girl's name, but since she technically isn't his Holder, the poor Kwami just gets a case of bubble-mouth. Knowing she has limited time and that her own ID is most likely compromised, Marinette wracks her brain to figure out why this girl looks vaguely familiar. And then...she remembers! Because civilian!Chrysalis (lets say one of Lila's other identities) has actually met Marinette before! Where, you ask? In a bar of course, where she half-drunkenly asked her out on a date because she was pretty! At the time, Alya had been with Marinette so she didn't accept, but that's the memory that sticks out to her. Immediately after this, Ladybug blinks, finding herself back in her own body with the Miraculous Cure zipping through Paris. Chat compliments her for being incredible as always (possibly not having seen her get hit at all), but comments that she probably didn't need to take things as far as she did. We can assume that Lila-Bug went in the cartoonish violence direction to defeat the Akuma. Anyway, Ladybug goes home, anxious about Chrysalis possibly knowing her identity. In fact, she doesn't get a wink of sleep because of what happened last time (London Special). But in the morning, at 9am to be exact, her doorbell rings. Marinette isn't expecting anybody, so she holds her Miraculous close and goes to answer. Opening the door, she sees civilian!Chrysalis awkwardly standing there with a bouquet of flowers. She says hi and nervously asks Marinette on a date, which she accepts this time. End Fic!
Why does this entire thing happen? Because Lila wanted to find out Ladybug's identity. She's already developed a crush on Marinette, and this would be a bit funnier if we add a small beginning section with Lila ID #27 somewhere in the background. Something like attending a lecture in college, a coffee shop, you guys get the gist. Naturally, since her identity is compromised, Lila has nothing to lose and decides to shoot her shot with the local superheroine. Lilanette is presumed to ensue, and everyone is happy!
Obviously I didn't have time to write all of this in real fic format, but I still wanted to share what was drafted for this prompt. Shame I didn't get to make a fic because I think it's hilarious, but Saturday is much more important! Anyhoo, I'll see you all...in like 20 minutes with the Spooky prompt rant, similarly to this, but until then, Stay Miraculous everyone!
#miraculous ladybug#lilanetteweek#fanfic ideas#marinette dupain cheng#lila rossi#lilanette week#lilanette#wish i'd written this tbh#but oh well i guess#the free space is worth the effort#anyway yeah#and feel free to ask abt this au!#i'll see myself out now

The Florist next-door... Andy Barber x f!reader Part 15/? (Now being posted on @daddy-issues-galore and NOT @i-have-a-wonky-eye-too)

<Part 14<
Warnings: 18+ readers only, swearing, fingering, unprotected sex, sex outside (in a tent) slight dirty talk, pet/nicknames (baby girl, sweetheart), accidentally use of 'daddy', Laurie being mean, sweet father/son/reader moments
Andy smiled to himself as he watched you teach Jacob how to make a s'more. He thought you looked absolutely stunning, the flames from the fire in the back yard illuminating your natural beauty as you and his son laughed and made a mess with marshmallows and chocolate. It had been the perfect day... almost.
The three of you had spent the entire day buying everything Jacob needed for his camping trip. Andy was thankful for your help (and camping knowledge) because he knew absolutely nothing about camping. Having you around to explain things to Jacob was more helpful than any YouTube video he would have been watching. Eventually, Andy gave in to Jacob and agreed the three of you could spend the night 'camping' before setting some of the stuff up in the back yard.
That's when the almost perfect day took a hit and things went a little sour.
"How do you know so much about camping, Y/N?" Jacob asked as he helped you connect the tent poles together.
"My dad and grandpa, used to take me every year when I was a kid." You smiled. "I used to love spending time out in the woods, collecting firewood or fishing by the lake."
"How come we never went camping?" Jacob looked at Andy who was trying to put the other tent up on his own.
Andy frowned as he struggled with a pole, "Uh, well... We were always working and... Your, uh, mom, hates bugs, so..." He huffed and stood up, putting his hands on his hips. "Why won't it work?"
You and Jacob burst out laughing at him making Andy roll his eyes and smile at you.
"Okay, smart-ass, you do it." He challenged Jacob with a smile.
"Fine." Jacob ran over to him and quickly began to take over as Andy's attention was drawn away by the doorbell.
"I'm gonna answer the door, but when I get back, that tent better be up." He called out over his shoulder with a grin.
Andy sent you a wink making you blush and quickly look away from him.
As much Andy was going to miss Jacob being around for the weekend, he was also looking forward to the two of you being able to spend some time together. He wanted to show you how grateful he was for you being by his side.
Andy's smile fell as he opened the door. "What are you doing here, Laurie?"
"I want to see my son." She scowled st him.
Andy let out a heavy sigh as he placed his hands on his hips. "I've already told you, Jacob doesn't want to see you right now."
Laurie scoffed, "You mean you don't want him to see me."
"That's not true, Laurie. I've spoken to him and he does want to see you, just not yet, okay? He needs time." Andy said calmly.
"Why am I the bad guy? You're just as bad and as guilty as I am. This isn't fair, Andrew." Laurie said raising her voice.
Andy huffed, "You're right, I am. But one of the differences is, Laurie, our son caught you in bed with another man." Andy glared, "And unlike you, I haven't been sleeping around. What, Y/N and I, have is serious. I love her."
Laurie scoffed crossing her arms over her chest, "Please. What you have with her is a midlife crisis, Andy, and you know it. Give it a couple of months and things will fizzle out and you'll realise that you've made the biggest mistake of your life."
Andy gritted his teeth. "No, that was marrying you."
Laurie rolled her eyes. "Screw you. Now let me see my son." She said as she tried to push him out of her way.
"No." Andy blocked the doorway so she couldn't get in. "Now leave."
Laurie glared up at him. "Fine. But don't think this is over, Andy. I'm taking my son if it's the last thing I do." She spat before turning around and heading back to her car.
Andy watched her until she drove off down the road before slamming the door shut, letting out a shaky breath as he leaned against it.
"How long do you think he'll last?" You whispered to Andy as the two of you settled in your own tent for the night.
"It depends how much charge his cell has." Andy answered with a playful smile before he paused. "Did you tell him about the lack of bathroom situation in the woods?" He asked.
You creased your brow. "That's a job for his father, I think." You laughed softly making Andy chuckle.
"I think it's best we leave it to mother nature." He chuckled as he laid down.
As you laid down beside him, Andy slipped his arm around you and pulled you into his side so you could rest your head on his chest. The two of you exhaled softly as you snuggled closer to one another and finally let yourselves relax after a busy day.
You'd barely been laid there ten minutes when you heard Jacob moving around inside his tent before he unzipped it. You looked up at Andy with a questioning look as Jacob's footsteps moved away from where the two of you were.
Andy just rolled his eyes with a heavy sigh, "Tell me he isn't going in already?" He asked as the back door quietly shut.
You quickly covered your mouth to hide your amusement. "Maybe he's gone to use the bathroom."
"Don't make excuses, Y/N." Andy huffed, "He's gone to play his game, hasn't he?"
You nodded with a soft sigh, "I think he might have, yes."
The two of you laid in silence for a couple of seconds before you burst out laughing.
"Should we go get him? Or go in?" You asked.
Andy shook his head, "Nah. Let him think he's out smarted us." He pushed himself up so he was hovering over you. "I've missed laying with you in my arms." He whispered as he cupped your cheek.
Since telling Jacob about the two of you, you thought it was best that you didn't 'have sleepovers' with Andy. The poor kid was already going through so much you didn't want to add to it. For now, him being okay with you spending time with him and his dad knowing the two of you were an item, was enough. You didn't want to rub his face in it.
You let out a soft exhale as you let your hands softly glide over his sides. "Me too." You smiled lovingly up at him. "But it wouldn't be fair to, Jacob, if I were to stay the night. And, I don't want to give, Laurie, more ammunition to use against you in the divorce." You let out a frustrated sigh.
Andy nodded, gently brushing your hair. "I know, sweetheart." He leaned down and pressed a kiss to your forehead. "You're right... But, right now," Andy leaned down again and kissed your lips, easily slipping his tongue past them and pulling a soft moan from you.
Andy smirked to himself when he pulled back from you and you chased after his lips.
"Jacob, is almost certainly staying inside for the night whilst we're out here." He leaned down and kissed the left side of your neck making you draw in a sharpe breath as he ran his tongue over your skin, tickling you with his beard. "And you're already laid in my arms." He whispered before doing the same to your right side.
You reached up and carded your fingers through his hair, pulling his head up so you could crash your lips against his.
Andy slipped his left hand into your sweats and slowly coated his fingers in your wetness. You let out a breathy moan against his mouth as he pressed two of his thick fingers against your clit and began to slowly circle it.
Your eyes closed and your back arched, "More, please."
Andy chuckled softly as he pushed his fingers inside of your weeping pussy and began to slowly fuck you.
You groaned, "Fuck, Andy,"
Andy dropped his face against the side of your neck and moaned against your skin. He twisted his hand and curled his fingers as he kissed and licked your neck. You threw your head back, rolling your hips against his hand moaning.
"Shh, baby. Gotta keep those pretty moans quiet." Andy smirked, "Don't want anyone hearing ya' 'bout to cum, do we, sweetheart?" He teased, lightly nipping your skin.
"Shut up." You moaned.
Andy chuckled as he curled his fingers. "Don't be mean, baby girl," Andy raised his head to look down at you. "Or you won't be coming at all." He warned as he slowly began to remove his fingers.
You shook your head, "M'sorry, Andy. I'll be good." You whined.
"Good girl," Andy leaned down pressed his lips against yours.
You let out a deep moan against Andy's mouth as he added a third finger began to finger you at a faster pace. Your hips once again began to move against his hand.
"Oh, Andy..." You moaned, sliding your hands under his t-shirt against his strong back muscles until you could hold onto his shoulders. "Please, don't stop." You moaned. "S'close." You squeezed around his thick fingers.
Andy groaned against throat as he softly sucked and kissed your skin. "C'mon, baby... Cum for me... Cum for daddy." He groaned and crashed his mouth against yours as you began to cry out in pleasure as you came around his fingers.
You held onto Andy as you slowly calmed down from your orgasm, letting out soft mewls as Andy carefully withdrew his fingers from you.
"Shit," Andy panted against your mouth as you both caught your breaths. "Are you okay?" He whispered, lightly kissing your cheek and brushing your hair back.
You hummed, "You didn't hurt me, baby. I'm okay." You smiled up at him as you cupped his face.
He shook his head. "No, I meant-" He sighed, "I said-"
"Hey," You smiled up at him, "It's okay."
"No, it's not." He frowned. "I shouldn't-"
"Andy," You pulled his face closer to yours. "It's okay," You bit your bottom lip sudectively. "I enjoyed it." You smirked.
Andy's eyebrows lifted in surprise. "You did?"
You nodded as you slid your right hand between the two of you and palmed his hard cock through his sweats. Andy's eyes fell shut as his mouth fell open with a soft moan.
"It's okay, daddy," You whispered before softly kissing his chin. "I enjoy it."
Andy gulped as he pulled back to look down at you, licking his bottom lip. His eyes moved from your lust blown eyes to your nipples that were noticeably pebbled through your (his) t-shirt.
"You want my cock, baby girl?" He asked as he began to push his sweats down until his hard cock was free and in his hand.
You let out a low moan as you stared at his beautiful cock. "Fuck," You nodded licking your lips. "Yes, daddy."
Andy let out a low growl quickly helping you pull your sweats down before he crawled between your legs. "I need to be inside you," He kissed you, taking a hold of his cock and running it through your folds.
Your mouth fell open as the head of Andy's cock nudged your swollen clit a couple of times before he pushed his hard cock inside of you.
You let out a deep groan as Andy bottom his thick length inside of you. You dug your nails into his broad shoulders and hooked your leg over his hip, your heel pushing u to his ass.
"Fuck, your pussy feels so good, baby." He began to roll his hips as he pressed his face into the crook of your neck. "Fuckin' made for me."
He pulled back and crashed his lips against yours, forcing his tongue inside your mouth as you moaned.
You rolled your hips in time with his, "Fuck, right there," You moaned loudly.
"Fuck, baby." Andy rested his forehead against yours. "That feel good, baby girl?"
You nodded, dragging your nails down his firm back as he ground his hips against yours. You cried out as his public bone rubbed against your swollen clit.
"C'mon, baby girl, give daddy one more." Andy reached up and pinched one of your nipples as he crashed his lips against yours.
You let out a deep groan of pleasure as you came around Andy's cock. He wasn't far behind you, moaning deeply into your mouth as he came.
The two of you held each other close as you came down from your highs, sharing soft, loving kisses.
Andy carefully laid back beside you, wrapping his arm around your shoulders. "I love you, sweetheart." Andy whispered.
"I love you too... Daddy." You wiggled your eyebrows at him teasingly with a giggle.
Andy let out a tired chuckle, shaking his head. "Don't make me spank you."

~Smile Pretty Cure! Masterlist~
While you adored your friend, Reika, thereâs a significant difference in your hobbies. She likes archery and calligraphy, while you like video games. And not only that, but Reika doesnât understand technology nearly as much as you. Her family is pretty traditional, so they donât really own a lot of devices. So Reika is always a bit confused when youâre talking about the consoles you own and the games you play. Youâve been wanting to find a way to introduce her to your interest, but didnât know how.
However, things ended up paying in your favor! A local video game store had a great deal of selling an older console along with the newer console, all for the price of one! You couldnât resist it, so you caved. At first, you didnât know what to do with the older one. But you realized it was the perfect opportunity to get Reika into gaming!
~~~~
âAlright, itâs all set up.â You told Reika. The system was hooked up to a small television on the floor, which was rarely used. So it was perfect for playing video games.
âOkay. Iâm not quite sure how to do this, though.â She said, clearly a bit nervous.
âThatâs fine! Iâll teach you!â You replied excitedly. âI even have a game you could start with.â You pulled it out, and handed it to her.
ââBlockbuildâ?â She said, reading the title. She then flipped the case to the back, and began reading about the game. âI believe Iâve heard of this before.â
âWell it is one of the most popular games in the world.â You chuckled. âBasically, everythingâs made out of blocks. You build, mine, craft and explore. Itâs really fun!â
âI see.â She smiled softly. âWell then, I guess Iâll try it. So, how do you work this?â She gestured over to the console.
You rushed over in excitement, and happily showed her.
~~~~
That day was the most fun youâve had in a long while. Reika was a clumsy player at first. She didnât know all the controls, but sheâs always been a quick learner. So she got over the hurdles with no issues. Sheâs a very smart player as well. Strategies are quickly made, and theyâre very effective. Sheâs also very organized. She keeps everything she acquires, and stores the items in sorted chests.
Just within a few hours of playing, she got pretty far. She managed to find a village, get plenty of materials and build her first house. It was clear she had a lot of fun, and so did you.
You snapped out of your thoughts once you realized you had reached Reikaâs house. She had asked you to come over to give her more instructions and advice on the game. You rang the doorbell, and waited. But to your surprise, Reikaâs mother answered.
âHello, (name).â She greeted kindly.
âHi Mrs. Aoki. Whereâs Reika?â You asked, confused as to why it wasnât her who was greeting you.
âSheâs in her room, Iâm assuming playing that game.â Mrs. Aoki chuckled. âSheâs been spending quite a lot of time on it. I havenât seen her this interested in something in a long time. In fact, I canât remember the last time sheâs had a new hobby.â
âOh wow, really?â You laughed. âI didnât think sheâd be that hooked.â
âYes. But Iâm glad she shares an interest with a friend.â She smiled at you. âAnyways, why donât I take you to her room?â
âOkay! Thank you!â
~~~~
Upon reaching Reikaâs bedroom door, it was completely silent. That was normal, but you assumed that youâd hear some form of video game sound effects or exclamations coming from her. But you figured Reika wasnât the type to yell over a game, so you quickly brushed it off.
Her mother knocked three times on the door. âReika, (name)âs here.â
âOh, come in!â She responded. You were slightly taken aback by this, as she always opened the door for you. But you laughed it off, knowing she was too absorbed in her game.
After waving Mrs. Aoki goodbye, you entered Reikaâs room. She was planted on a cushion in front of the TV, controller in her hands. She was fully focused, yet she still kept her perfect posture.
âHey!â You greeted.
Reika paused the game, and turned to you. âHello (name). Sorry, I was just so focused.â She laughed, embarrassed.
âHaha, thatâs okay. I know what thatâs like.â You assured her.
She hummed, then gestured to the cushion that was placed next to her. âFeel free to sit down.â
âOkay, thanks!â You said, and plopped down on the soft pillow. âSo, whatâve you got to show me?â You fiddled with your hands in anticipation.
âOh, yes.â Reika replied, unpausing the game. âIâve upgraded my house. It took a while to craft and build everything, but it was very fun. And I think it looks pretty good too.â
Her character shifted to show the aforementioned house, and your jaw dropped.
It was possibly one of the best houses youâve ever seen. It was much bigger than it was the last time you saw it; now standing at two stories high. You could tell it was very thought out, judging by the detailed architecture. A dark colored wood was used for the most of it, yet stone and lighter wood were used as contrasting materials. It was pretty, yet modest. A perfect representation of its builder.
âOh my gosh..â You said, just barely audible. âReika, this is amazing!â
âThank you. I spent a lot of time planning it out. Oh, and I have a little garden over here.â Just as she said, a few rows of crops were growing just by the side of the house. âI used all the seeds Iâve collected. Iâm glad I didnât get rid of them.â
âYeah, thatâs good. Whatâs that over there?â You asked, pointing to a spot where some fences were.
âIâm working on a space for some chickens. But I need more wood to finish it.â
âOh, okay.â
âAh, yes, thatâs right.â Reika exclaimed, remembering something. âHereâs one of the things I need help with.â She walked her character over to a horse. It was black with white markings, and was tied to a fence. âIs there a way to tame this horse?â
âYup! Youâll need to craft some things. I also know a way to name your horse.â You replied.
âOh, really? Iâd like to do that.â
âOkay, letâs see. Do you have a carrot and a stick?â You asked.
And from there, you taught Reika how to tame her horse. She already had all the necessary materials, due to her in-game hoarding tendencies. She even had an anvil, which was needed to name it.
She had progressed so much in such a short amount of time. It was almost scary. But you couldnât be happier. You and Reika now shared an interest! You couldnât wait to show her more, and she couldnât wait to learn. You were so thankful for that deal at the video game store, because now, you and your friend were growing even closer.
A Hello Neighbor Fanfiction: 31th October 1954,Raven Brooks
Note:Contains Death,Abuse and things like this
Summary:Gerda hadn't Always been the local baker and Forest protectors.Before that she was one of the bullies of the inventors club...and even before that...she was just a normal girl, that was forced to deal with big stuff,too big for her.
Principal's office-12 a.m
"Please sit down,Ms Baker" said the principal
She could tell by his voice's tone that she was in bigger trouble than usual.Not that she could really blame him for that after all,while he was a kind Person he was still a principal and that was the sixth time she was sent at his office in Just a month.New record.
Gerda sit in silence,just hoping she won't hurt him too
"Ms Baker,i hope you know why are you here" said the principal cleary dissapointed,instead of angry as she thought at first,that only made her feel even more guilty.
"i broke the nose to Andy Johnson and i have almost choked him" she said with a tone of voice between shame and guilty
He nods,now cleary more frustated "Gerda⌠you are a really smart girl for your age,and from what i heard from your teachers you are also very kind and polite⌠however your "angry issues " are a real problem.We have talked multiple times Gerda,but everytime you Always come back here.Please GerdaâŚtell meâŚwhy are you doing this? Why do you have these angry issues?âŚAnd if don't worry,this conversation will stay between me and you,i won't tell anything to your parents" he adds quickly seeing the girl scared expression
"IâŚI don't know for sure sir" Said Gerda still nervous. "GerdaâŚplease, everytime i ask you this question you Always avoid to answerâŚi won't force you to answer,but i think it could be help you a lot" Gerda took a breath. "IâŚi⌠sometimes i just feel an uncontrable rageâŚthis is clear to everyone butâŚi feel it's problably worseâŚmy rage⌠doesn't matter how much time i supress itâŚi am not enough strong to control ItâŚwhen someone hurt meâŚor my FriendsâŚi lose controlâŚi Just wanna hurtâŚmake them sufferâŚ" Gerda explained.Fortunately for her holding back the tears was her biggest skill cause she could tell she could have easily cried right now.
"From what i heard mr Johnson had made fun of your family and Mr Rossi's one too for your,humile originsâŚis that true" Asked The principal with patience.
Gerda simply nods,praying in silence that the principal kind soul didn't left him right in this Moment
"Listen Gerda,i had the chance to see you are really nice girl and i have no intention to give up with you.However i hope you understand that your rage is a serious problem.I Will help you if you need, however if this happens again next time there will be consequencesâŚhope you understand Gerda" He said slowly and calmly
"Thank you sir,this is even more than what i deserve." Gerda said meeting the eyes of the principal for the first time.
The principal gave her a comforting smile and,hoping to cheer her up,he gives her some candies "You can go Gerda,i don't think any kid would like spend the halloween night at school.Even if i bet the math tests are scarier than any other monster"
That made Gerda giggle a Little, She accepted the candies and slowly got out from the office
Gerda's house- 7:pm
"SHUT UP YOU STUPID MAN AND CLOSE YOUR FUCKING MOUTH"
"LEARN YOUR PLACE IN THIS FAMILY WOMAN!"
Gerda was hiding herself under the table, trying to avoid being hit by a flying plate again,her scars were already enough.Her parents were fighting and She has no intention to be in the middle of their brawl ever again, especially not with her halloween costume that risked to be broken.Arlo and Wally would have arrived soon.When she heard the doorbell,she ran outside before her parents could yells against her for every possible reason.
"Ehy guys" said Gerda at her two best friends.Arlo was wearing a pumpkin as a mask, with some farmer shirt that he proudly said have stolen from His dad old wardrobe.Wally instead,as every year,decided to wear a costume based on the Raven Man, the stupid local legend
"seriously Gerd? We already looked stupid without your stupid alien costume, didn't you have anything better?" Asked Wally annoyed
"Oh shut up already Wally,not all of us have enough money for waste them in some other costume" She rolled her eyes
"guys,guys, guys,PLEASE!i skipped dinner just for have enough space for the candies.Can we stop arguing and start our research before someone else steal them" implored Arlo
"Yeah sure Arl,we need to move"
So the trio moved to the first house.No candies for them.So they moved to the second house.No candies for them.So they trued the third,the fourth,the fifth,the sixth, and all the houses in Raven Brooks.Still no candies.
"Oh Come on,HOW IT IS POSSIBLE?" Gerda kicked a trashcan in frustation.
"The other kids must have did Trick or Treath before us,i bet it was Marvin,That dirty bastard" responded Wally.
"EHY WALLY!I told you my mom doesn't like swearing so please stop it" said Arlo. "Your mom isn't here." "Still doesn't want me to listen swears."
While Arlo and Wally continued to argue about swearings Gerda noticed SomethingâŚor someoneâŚin the woods.
"Ehy,do you see that person over there too?" Asked at her friends. "uhâŚOh yes,it's look like have a similar costume to mine,what is he doing in the woods?" asked Wally
"Do you think they could have some candies to share" Arlo cheers filled with new hopes,That made Gerda giggles a Little.
"Well there is only a Way to find out"She tried to lead the way but Wally stopped her" "Woah Gerds,do you seriously i think it's a good idea? Go during night in the forest i meanâŚ." "Wow,the Great Wally Smith is scared of some trees?" she friendly teased her friend. "What?I am not!Never mind,Let's Chase that man!" "Said like that seems we are making a crime" "Shut up Arlo! You want the candies so bad? Then let's go!" Gerda couldn't help but chuckle to her Friends discussing. "Come on Raven and Pumpink kids,If we move fast enough we should be able to reach him"
âŚ
They weren't fast enough, they had lost too much time talking,and as it wasn't enough Arlo got stuck between the poison ivy two times.
They had even reach the new church that will be build pretty soon.However the person was nowhere.
"great,we Lost it.Say goodbye to pur chance to have candies" Said Gerda dissapointed.
"AHHHHHHHHH" "Arlo i swear, if you sre stuck again in the pois-" Wally stop talking,Arlo wasn't anywhere.The two Friends started to panic.
"Arlo!Arlo!" Yelled Gerda, feeling the anxious growing quickly. "Ehy look!" Wally pointed a very deep hole in the floor "GUYS!GUYS! DO YOU HEAR ME? HELP!" Arlo's voice arrived from below.
"WE ARE COMING!" Gerda took Wally's hand and they jumped. After their fall, they found themself in a strange room.It was full of golden shining coins,Arlo was in the floor in pain. "Gerda,give a look at the room, I try to see if Arlo can walk at all" said Wally with a serious tone in contrast to his normal personality,that didn't matched at all. She stand up and look at the coins,then with a quick move put it some in her bag.She felt like a thief but after all her family had too much financy problems while whoever owned these coins was problably rich,he wouldn't have mind.
she decided that only if she would have find the owner she would have give them back.
Then her eyes moved on an old broken door
"Guys i think i have found the exit,Arlo can you walk?" "Y-yeah,it hurts a Little but i can"
The trio slowly opened the door but they then stopped at the sight of the person in costume before⌠with many many others
"Seriously, is my costume so unoriginal?" Wally Whispers.
But then they all stopped,they were trying to listen what they were saying but it was very difficult.However the few words they listened⌠were only making them feel worse.
"genocide" "Our lord" "Flood" "Physical form"âŚevery word worse than the other...
"Guys,we must escape from here,let's return back and find another exi-"
"KYAAAAAH" A raven were looking and screaming at the trio.All the creepy weirdos turn around to look at them "RUN"Gerda screamed.
They tried to return back,but Arlo's leg was too hurt for running,He strumble making all the children fall on the floor,and the weirdos in Raven Mask had took Wally,and one of them put their hand on his Neck
"please⌠pleaseâŚplease stop it" implored Wally,his breath was rapidly faiding and the weirdo grasp was becoming stronger
"L-Let him g-goâŚp-please" Gerda implored but no one them gave her even a look
"p-please⌠pleaseâŚ" She tried again,her frustation growing.But they still ignored,And Gerda was Just even more in panic,untilâŚher rage and frustration took over her mind. She push the weirdo against the wall.
"LEAVE" Gerda punched so hard the weirdo that the mask fell off, revealing she had made the man's nose bleed "US" She gave him another punch,his face was becoming purple and he was looking at her like he was praying her mercy "ALONE!" Without control GerdaâŚbroke the man's neck,she realized what she did just too late.She had killed a man.
The room turned in silence,.Wally,Arlo or even the other weirdos didn't said anything,and Gerda could only imagine in fear what her Friends's faces could be under the Masks.What was worse Is thatâŚshe felt powerfull for the first time in her life, and this strange feeling was now mixed with her sense of guilty.She started to cry.
As the situation wasn't enough tragic a new voice shattered the air
"LET HER STAY! FEED ME WITH THE OTHERS''FRESH" the voice said.Gerda turned pale,looking at her Friends and at the raven weirdos.in panic she tried to find a way to escape,but there was any other door. "HERE" Wally took Gerda and Arlo by their hand and they quickly entered into vent.They moved faster than they could in that Little place and then After some minutesâŚthey were out.Again in the woods. "WE ARE ALIVE" Yelled happy Arlo. But it was too soon to talkâŚA storm⌠One of the worse storm that Raven Brooks would have ever seenâŚarrived.The skyes turned quickly purple and the clouds covered the starlight.And before anyone could say anything the wind's Strenght separate the three Friends. "GUYS" was the last thing Gerda had said before she hit her against a tree, making her feel unconscious
????-????
She woke up, don't knowing where was sheâŚbut it lookedâŚlike an hospital
"you are a tough girl i see,you woke up pretty fast"A man in a police suit was at the right of the bad
"W-what happened? Who are you? Where are my friends" Gerda had millions of questions to ask Fortunately the young police officer didn't look bored
"Pleasure to meet you Gerda,I am Keith.You fell unconscious during the Storm and i rescued you.As for your friendsâŚthe police department Is still looking for them" Keith said with patience. Gerda turned paleâŚArlo and WallyâŚwhere were they?did that strange group of peopleâŚ
"Listen Gerda,i won't force you to speak with meâŚbut if you are comfortable, please,i need to know what happened the last night"
Gerda started to sweat in panic at the Question.
She stayed in silence.
She was scared of every possible consequences.
She had killed a man and in part enjoyed it,she had found a some type of creepy cult,she had stole coins⌠She was scaredâŚit was her fault,she had convince them to go to the woodsâŚand now they were missing.Her skin turned pale.
As if Keith could read her thoughts,or at least her emotions,left the room giving her personal space.Now All Alone Gerda started to cry,and cry,and cry⌠without realizingâŚa raven was looking at her from the hospital Window.
Chapter Twelve: Application Time
Barbara took a nap on the couch, and Jason came and nudged her awake. She opened her eyes. "Barbara... Iâ."
"I lied to you. I'm sorry... But how did you know?" Barbara asked.
"I finally thought about it... Dick was like twelve. Maybe thirteen. I don't think he was running around with some random guy. I wasn't just mad about the lying. I was pissed because it felt like you don't really trust me, and I tell you whatever you wanna know about me. I don't know what else I could possibly do to make you trust me. Pop trusts me," Jason whispered. Barbara sat up completely, and Jason sat next to her. "I just want you to feel like you can trust me."
"I do. Jason, I just made a promise that I had to keep... What were you doing in the cemetery with Bruce Wayne?" she asked. Jason looked at her, and she softened. "Oh... Jason, I'm sorry. Is that where you always go?"
Jason shook his head. "I don't. Sometimes I go home, sometimes I go to the cemetery... Other times I go to the docks," Jason replied. Barbara looked at him. "No more going to the docks at night, please," she requested. Jason softened a little and nodded. "And Jason, I meant it. We are a team."
The doorbell rang, and Barbara got up to answer. "Bruce?" she whispered.
"Would both of you mind coming with me?" Bruce asked. Jason looked at Barbara.
"Go put your shoes on," Barbara whispered. He went back to his room, and Barbara cocked her head. "He isn't gonna tell anyone. Jason's a good kid."
"I know. I spent two hours talking to Jason last night... He's a charming kid. He's also a funny kid. You didn't tell me he tried to steal my tires," Bruce smiled at the thought.
"He told you that?" Barbara asked. Bruce nodded.
"We had a lot to talk about once he sort of figured things out. He wasn't bragging... He was apologizingâ."
"Don't put my brother to the test just to crush him," Barbara whispered, "I'm not putting him in the field. I discussed that with him already."
Jason came out of his room dressed and ready to go, and he slipped his shoes on. They went out front to the car and rode out to the manor. "No school today?" Bruce asked.
"I'm in homeschool. Pop wants me to go to public school for my freshman year, though," Jason answered.
Barbara turned around in the car and looked at him. "Dad wants you to go to public school?" Barbara's voice went up an octave.
"I don't think it's a bad idea," Jason replied, "I was only in home school to catch up, but now I'm a little ahead... I might as well go to public school."
"Central?" Bruce asked.
"I'm not sure. I would've gone to Heights when I lived on Park Row... Central High is closer to home," Jason answered. He fidgeted with his seatbelt. "Unless by magic I get into the Academy, I'm going to end up going to Central. And that's cool and everything, but I don't know anybody in this part of Gotham."
"You know kids at Gotham Academy?" Bruce asked.
Jason shrugged. "A lot of smart people come out of Park Row," Jason mumbled.
"You applied to get into the school?" Barbara asked.
Jason made a soft noise. "Yeah... Maybe we should change the subject. Did you want my sister to be Batgirl when she started out?" Jason asked.
"Absolutely not. I wanted Barbara to quit," Bruce answered.
"He didn't just want me to quit. He actively discouraged me," Barbara added, "It took almost a year to convince him that I was up for the job."
Once they got to the manor, Bruce led them upstairs, and they entered the cave. Jason marveled at Batman's many trophies as Bruce took him on a tour of the cave. Barbara started to get antsy as she realized what Bruce was doing. As they neared the training simulator, Barbara walked ahead of Bruce after whispering a single warning, "He doesn't need to be tested."
"You trained him. Don't you want to see how he holds his own without you," Bruce whispered. Barbara clenched her jaw and remained silent. Bruce let Jason walk into the training simulator to look around as he described what it does.
"Whoa! I bet it took forever to build this!" Jason exclaimed.
"Would you like to give it a spin?" Bruce asked. Jason nodded, his mouth agape as he stood there in awe. "Go on," Bruce nudged him.
Barbara waited until Jason was out of earshot to say, "I already talked to him. He's not going out in the field. He's tooâ." The simulation started, and Barbara hoped that Bruce's idea of failure wouldn't crush Jason.
She could only imagine how Jason would fare. Barbara fearfully watched as Jason made his way through the first part of the simulation. As difficulty increased, Barbara crossed her arms and whispered for Bruce to shut off the simulation. "Something's wrong," Bruce stated calmly, "Isn't he right-handed?"
"Yes, but what does that have to do with-. If there's something wrongâ."
"Just watch him," Bruce interrupted. Barbara watched closely, and a smile spread across her face. "Leading away from civilians."
"What a ham," she chuckled as she watched Jason, "He knows this is a test."
As the simulation came to an end, Barbara looked up to notice that Bruce was smiling. Jason stepped out of the room and crossed his arms. Jason looked to Barbara for approval rather than Bruce. "What did I do wrong?" Jason asked.
Barbara smiled at him. "Excessive force," she whispered as she pulled him into a hug. "It takes six weeks to heal a fractured jaw. He can't talk if he can't speak." Jason couldn't help but smile as he noted the warm prideful tone of her voice. "But other than that, you were great."
Jason smiled as he pulled away. "And Mr. Wayne, I know I'm not ready. She'll tell me when I am," Jason replied. Bruce smiled and nodded.
"You can call me Bruce... She's doing a great job training you," Bruce commended Barbara and Jason both. Bruce invited them to stay for lunch, and Jason waited for Barbara's answer. She nodded, and they went back upstairs and had lunch with Bruce. Jason's phone rang, and he excused himself to answer Jim's call.
"Hi, Pop," Jason answered calmly.
"Hi, Jason. I'm going to the store in an hour or two. I just wanted to check in and see if you wanted anything," Jim replied, "And how are you and Barbara doing?"
"We're good... And can we have sloppy joes for dinner?" Jason asked.
"Read my mind... Listen, you know that we're your family no matter what... And can we talk about high school later?" Jim asked.
"Yeah, why?" Jason asked.
"Because I just got an email, and I didn't want to open it until we could sit down together," Jim answered. Jason let out a breath of air as he pushed a hand through his curls.
"An email? From?" Jason asked.
"Gotham Academy. I've had my fingers crossed for you since I got it. I love you. Tell your sister I love her too, will ya?" Jim asked.
"Can do, Pop. I love you too, bye," Jason replied, and Jim hung up. Jason collected himself before sitting back down at the table.
Nostalgia
a/n: this is all @bolontikuâs fault. Blame her. Itâs been a while since I watched The Losers so... mistakes are mine, but I also think Jake Jensen is a soft, romantic at heart who covers by being a goofball. word count: 1765
__________
15 years agoâŚ
You thumped your head against your locker, once, twice. The third time you tried, your head landed in someoneâs hand. You opened your eyes, and looked over to see who was trying to save you from yourself.
âJake, let me concuss myself into a coma. Thereâs no hope,â you pleaded. He gave you that awkward smirk of his, and shook his head.
âNo way. I have an essay due in Lit and I need your help,â he laughed. You sighed heavily and stared him down. The smirk softened, and his head dipped. And then the bastard looked up through his puppy-dog eyes, magnified by his glasses. âPlease?â
XXX
You were sitting at a table in the library, stepping Jake through his essay.Â
âI donât get it, Jake. Youâre so smart. Why are you struggling with this?â He knew the material, and he had no issue when it came to writing, so you were at a loss. He shrugged.
âI canât organize my thoughts the way Iâm supposed to?â
A trio of popular girls sat at the table opposite you, and opened their textbooks. One of them noticed you, and gestured to the girl nearest you. She turned in her chair and tilted her head.
âWhy are you hanging out with this loser? I mean it? You could be so cool, you could hang out with us, come to all the good parties?â She pointed her pencil at Jake when she said loser. You furrowed your brow, and looked between her and Jake.
âJakeâs nice,â you answered.
âSo am I?â she retorted.
âNo, Crystal. Youâre not.â You looked over at Jake, who was blushing. You werenât sure if it was from the hurt of being insulted or from your compliment. âYouâre killing math this year, can you help me? Maybe after school?â
You tried not to notice as the trio slammed their books closed and stormed out of the library. Jake rubbed the back of his neck.
âYou just committed social suicide,â he commented. You took in his concerned features. Heâd grown tall in the last year, and the rest of him hadnât quite caught up, so he was still a little gangly, but you could see that his shoulders were starting to broaden. Heâd always been a cute kid, right from when you met in grade two. Youâd always thought it was the glasses that softened him from a normal kid to adorable, but taking in the features of his face, you second-guessed yourself. Jake was actually turning into a really handsome guy. More importantly, youâd been friends since boys had cooties.
âAs if I care. My entire goal in life is to leave this shithole town. Help me with Math. Iâll get you through Lit. You can take me to prom, and then weâll be done with this place,â you said.
__________
You werenât sure what you were doing in your childhood bedroom, but your mother had insisted that attending your high school reunion would help her in her bid to become mayor. Seemed a little ridiculous, but for some reason, you were getting dressed. It was only four hours. You could survive.
âOh, sweetheart, you look lovely!â Your mom cooed over you as you walked into the kitchen. You resisted the urge to roll your eyes. âMarkâs brother-in-law is going to be here to pick you up any time now.â
âMarkâs brother-in-law?â You asked. âYou mean Jake?â The doorbell cut off your momâs answer.
Just as youâd suspected, Jake had filled out. He had broad shoulders and a trim physique and despite the ridiculousness of his goatee, it suited him. A better woman might not have drooled. You were not a better woman.Â
âDamn,â you breathed. Jake let out a low whistle at the same time.Â
âMy lady, your chariot awaits,â he winked, and offered his elbow.Â
The reunion was exactly what youâd expected. Cheap decorations, lackluster food and a bunch of popular kids who hadnât exactly been aging well. Jake sat down at the table beside you, and handed you a beer.
âIt was beer or that wine that made you barf at prom,â he laughed. You cringed and felt the embarrassment of that recollection hit you. Your brother, Mark, had bought you cheap wine. Jake had been determined to give you the Hollywood prom experience, and had genuinely made everything perfect. It was two losers having the night of their life, right up until you vomited in the lap of his rental tux.
âHow do you think that night might have ended? I mean, if I hadnât puked all over you?â You asked.
âI was definitely planning on kissing you,â he teased. You swatted him.
âYou were not! Jake, we were best friends, you wouldnât have!â You caught a slightly hurt look flash across his face and realized he was serious. âOh?â
âItâs stupid, forget it,â he shook his head and took a long draw from his beer. âThis is empty, be right back.â
No sooner was his seat vacated than a woman sat in it. She was familiar, but most of the people at the reunion were. You glanced at her name tag. Crystal. Of course.
âWho is that hunk you are with? Where did you find him? Your mom said you werenât married yet, so is it serious?â She fired off the questions like she was a police interrogator.
âHeâs not my boyfriend,â you started, âactually -â
âOh my god, is he single?â
âI think heâs -â Crystal was gone before you finished speaking, and she wasnât even subtle about making a direct line in Jakeâs direction. â- somewhat married to his career.â You trailed off.
Before he was able to protest, Crystal had dragged him onto the dance floor, right as a slow song started. She snuggled into him and you caught his eye. He made an unhappy face at you and you sighed and rose, heading out onto the dance floor.
âWhere were you hiding in high school?â A body blocked your progress. You glanced at the name tag - Dave - and realized it was the quarterback from the football team. He still looked strong and still had the boyish appeal that had all the girls swooning in school, but heâd never once noticed you, despite sharing all his classes in senior year with you.
âUsually sitting two seats ahead of you,â you replied honestly. He placed his palm on the small of your back and led you out to the dance floor.
âThen letâs get reacquainted,â he insisted. You threw a disgusted look Jakeâs way and he gave you a smug and satisfied one in return. As you scrunched up your nose to make a face at him, you caught his hand moving Crystalâs off his ass and let out a surprised snort of laughter. Dave looked down at you curiously.
âSorry,â you apologized. âIt would appear my date is being groped.â Dave followed your gaze over to Jake and Crystal and held you back when you attempted to head to save Jake.
âHeâs a big boy, sweetheart, he can handle her,â he chuckled. You felt twin spikes of irritation and jealousy shoot through you.
âThat may be the case, but the point of a date is that Iâm the only one who should be handling him.â You gave him a bright, fake smile, and pulled out of his arms. Jake saw you heading toward him and extricated himself from Crystalâs grasp, reaching out with a broad smile.
âBabe, you remember Crystal, right?â He pulled you into his side.
âOf course,â you replied. He laughed.
âRemember when she called you a loser for hanging out with me?â He asked. He pulled out a hotel key from his back pocket. âShe slipped this in my pocket. I guess Iâm not a loser anymore?â
âWait. Jake? Jake Jensen?â Crystal asked. He leaned forward and slipped the hotel key back into Crystalâs cleavage.
âHow do you like me now, bitch?â He asked, with a wink. You slapped your hand across your mouth to cover the cackle that was erupting from you, but werenât quite fast enough to smother it. Jake linked his hand with yours and led you away from the dance floor and out to the parking lot, both of you laughing at the way Crystalâs mouth had gaped open at his revelation.
You leaned up against his Jeep, out of breath from following his longer strides in heels and laughing. He laid a hand against the window beside your head and leaned it, suddenly quiet and serious.
âI meant what I said. You know, earlier,â he started. You tipped your head and took in the seriousness of his expression. You shook your head.
âWe were best friends, Jake, youâre letting nostalgia fog your memories,â you protested.
âNostalgia is remembering Cyrus McIntyre pushing you down in the playground in second grade and seeing the ruffles on your panties when your dress flipped up.â His laugh was soft. âOr the time you wore your hair in french braids for half the year because youâd cut your hair yourself and it was so uneven the only way to hide it was to braid it.â He slipped his hand into your hair as he spoke.
You let out a soft laugh at the memory. âStop.â
Jake shook his head, leaning in closer. âNostalgia was seeing you in that seafoam green puffed sleeve abomination at Prom and thinking you were the most beautiful girl Iâd ever seen.â His lips were so close, you could feel the warmth of his breath on your cheek. âOr when you tried to be brave when I went to Basic, but I saw you crying in your car after you thought Iâd stopped watching.â
Your eyes met his at the words, âbut -â
âI almost got off the bus.â He pressed his lips against yours softly, and he stepped in, boxing you between him and the jeep. You pulled back, breathless. One tiny kiss, and you were breathless. âI tried to move on, I tried to let you go. When Mark married Sarah, I took a mission so I wouldnât be able to make the wedding because Sarah said you were in a serious relationship and I just -â
âYou talk too much, Jake. Always have.â You pulled him back to you and pressed your mouth against his. He groaned and took control, tongue pushing past your lips, teasing yours. Your breath hitched as his hand tangled deeper in your hair and his hips ground against yours. You managed to pull away again, flushed and panting. âTake me home, Jake.â
Good rule of thumb is that anything that is listening for an activation phrase is always listening. That includes your smart speakers, smartphones, home assistants, and even that remote you've got.
Selling data is the big thing. Whether it is to AI companies and language learning models or to advertisers or to even political parties. Data brokering is the current Big money Maker.
So it is imperative for us to give up as little data as possible.
This is a privacy issue. And you could be damn well certain that if a company is always listening that law enforcement knows this and your data ain't safe from them either.
When the cops came by and knocked at my door, they noted that I had security cameras and wanted to see if anybody showed up on it. Me being me, I lied and said they weren't working and were just for show. The cop said "Oh" in a really depressed voice and then called out to his partner and said "take a look up and down the street and look for any ring doorbells" because Amazon doesn't even want a warrant or a subpoena they'll just give the data up unless it hurts them.
Hereâs a practical guide to the smartest renovations you can make to boost your home's worth â without breaking the bank.
1. Modern Kitchens: The Heart of a Valuable Home
Buyers often look at the kitchen first when considering a home. An outdated kitchen can be a deal-breaker, while a modern one can seal the deal. You donât have to go all-in on a complete remodel. Replacing cabinet hardware, installing new lighting, upgrading to energy-efficient appliances, or adding a tile backsplash can make a huge difference. Painting old cabinets and replacing worn countertops with quartz or granite are also affordable, impactful changes.
2. Bathroom Upgrades That Buyers Love
Next to the kitchen, bathrooms hold major weight in a homeâs value. Simple fixes like replacing outdated fixtures, installing new mirrors, or adding better lighting can make a bathroom feel fresh and luxurious. If your budget allows, consider installing a new vanity or retiling the shower. A walk-in shower with modern tile and glass doors is a high-value upgrade that often pays off.
3. Open Floor Plans and Why They Sell Faster
Many modern buyers prefer open and airy layouts. Knocking down a non-load-bearing wall between the kitchen and living room can dramatically change the feel of your home. An open layout makes your home appear larger and more functional â especially appealing to families and those who love entertaining. Be sure to consult a contractor before making structural changes.
4. Boosting Curb Appeal with Simple Exterior Improvements
The outside of your home is your first chance to make a good impression. Basic landscaping like mowing, edging, planting flowers, and trimming bushes adds instant curb appeal. Consider repainting the front door, replacing house numbers, and upgrading exterior lighting. These minor improvements can significantly raise perceived value.
5. Energy-Efficient Renovations That Cut Costs and Attract Buyers
Buyers love homes that are easy on the wallet. Upgrading to energy-efficient windows, adding attic insulation, or installing a smart thermostat can lower utility bills and make your property more attractive. Solar panels and tankless water heaters are also popular among eco-conscious buyers and may qualify for tax incentives.
6. Adding Space with Room Extensions and Insulation Under Concrete Slab
Adding a room or finishing a basement can dramatically increase the livable square footage of your home â and its value. When planning such extensions, especially ones involving slab foundations, itâs essential to include insulation under the concrete slab. This not only improves energy efficiency but also prevents moisture issues and enhances indoor comfort. Proper insulation contributes to long-term savings and adds to the home's structural value.
7. Smart Home Technology: Small Additions, Big Impact
Todayâs buyers are increasingly tech-savvy. Adding smart features like doorbell cameras, security systems, thermostats, and lighting controls can be inexpensive and give your home a cutting-edge appeal. These systems can often be installed with minimal tools and are seen as major perks by younger buyers.
8. Renovation Mistakes That Decrease Value (And How to Avoid Them)
Not all renovations pay off. Over-customizing a space or using low-quality materials can turn buyers away. Always consider resale when renovating â bold design choices or overly specific layouts might not appeal to the broader market. Before you start, invite a local realtor or interior designer to give you professional advice. Many realtors offer this as a free courtesy, and designers usually charge less than $100 per hour for a consultation. In just one hour, they can provide valuable insight that could save you thousands later.
Even the simplest improvements â like a fresh coat of paint â go a long way. Freshly painted rooms feel clean, modern, and well-maintained. Stick with neutral colors to appeal to more buyers and create a blank canvas for them to imagine their own style.
Final Thoughts
Increasing your homeâs value doesnât always require a full remodel or massive budget. Strategic, cost-effective renovations â from smart tech upgrades to insulation under concrete slabs â can add significant appeal and resale value. Start with the areas that need the most attention, get professional input where needed, and invest wisely in your homeâs future.
