Animal of the Day!
Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis)
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Southern Central America; South America
Size (Weight/Length)- 400 g; 35 cm
Diet- Small fish; Insects; Crustaceans; Mollusks
Cool Facts- Also called the quero-quero in Brazil and the queltehue in Chile, the southern lapwing is a small wading bird found throughout wet grassland. The southern lapwing’s fossil record goes back to the late Pleistocene alongside much larger mastodons and megafauna. Today, they’ve made a home in cattle land. Chasing after herds of cattle, southern lapwings catch insects that the cows stir up. Southern lapwings tend to be monogamous and encourage older offspring sticking around to help raise newer chicks. Extremely defensive, both the chicks and parents will try to chase predators and humans alike away from their nests.
Rating- 13/10 (Ah, yes, look at that birb. What a lovely birb.)

Quero-Quero (2024). Tapari, Santarém, Pará, Brasil. Outra ave arisca, e, de novo, uma das poucas fotos que consegui tirar dela.
Southern Lapwing (2024). Tapari, Santarém, Pará, Brazil. Another skittish bird, and, again, one of the few photos I managed to take of it.

I also saw a couple of lapwings!
The ones here are very cute and also pretty unafraid of humans usually (kind of like pigeons) but they’re VERY protective of their nests when they have babies, heh. My sister once got attacked by an angry mom lapwing when we were kids.

Can you add the queltehue (vanellus chilensis) to the list? And give them an extra bastard (affectionate) rating of 100/10 pls ty!
Oh now that's a bird. I'll add them to the list but I'll most likely use their more common name of the Southern Lapwing. Thanks for the awesome request!

Nothing is worse than being woken up by a screaming flock of quero-queros at 8 am on a saturday morning
I'm still so mad I could commit arson

Southern lapwing, Ushuaia. I saw one en route to the Tierra del Fuego park, and was like 'noooo what if I never see one again" 😂 turns out they're quite common.
Anyway, last one from there! Now I just have a few from Iguazú left.
Btw I didn’t say this before but I loved all the commentary being like “teru teru, they will mess you up!!” I had no idea they were so aggressive, this one was very chill 🥲
