It took me 14 months to write my fic, but it only took 2 months to turn it into this:
Tumblr media
That’s right, y’all. I learned the art of bookbinding. This is the dark path fic writing can lead you down. I wanted a copy of my 220K-word monstrosity on my shelf, but paying to have it bound is illegal. (Damn you, intellectual property law!) When I learned I’d have to make it myself, I was like, are you fucking kidding me? No way. That is insane. Then 24 hours later I was like, okay, I guess I’m learning bookbinding? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Then I started to enjoy it! Rejecting a life of crime gave me a new hobby. And it does look nice sitting on the shelf next to the Scholomance series that inspired it.
Tumblr media
It really is gorgeous to me, mostly because I created the whole thing from concept to hardcase. I wrote the story, created the typeset, designed the cover, and bound it—all by myself! I feel a bit like Gwen Higgins creating that healing patch for El: tilling the soil, planting the linen seeds, spinning it into thread, and then weaving it into a patch. (Okay, I didn’t make the paper or the ink or the heat transfer vinyl, but we have to set boundaries somewhere.)
Tumblr media
It was rather exhausting though. I feel like I’ve completed a never-ending quest full of side missions that each required a different set of skills and required me to obtain a wide variety of obscure supplies. I also spent a bunch of money that I don’t really have, which makes this the most expensive book I’ve ever owned BY FAR, which is ridiculous because all the flaws in its construction undoubtedly decrease its value. It cost so much that I feel obligated to bind a whole bunch of more books to bring down the average cost per project. That, or I’ll have to eat all the supplies instead of buying groceries next month.
Tumblr media
I plan on writing a series of posts about how I made this thing, including all my trips to the hardware store, the fraudster on Amazon who sent me weird paper, and my newfound love for craft knives and bone folders. When I do, I’ll post the links down below.
Tumblr media
In the meantime, if anyone has an urge to bind a copy of my fic themselves, here are links to zip files of the signatures and the cover images: Spellbreaker signatures | Spellbreaker cover images
Oh, and here’s a link to the fic on AO3. Spellbreaker: A Scholomance Sequel by Erosia Rhodes. Enjoy!

Honestly, I think Peryite gets a bad rap among the Daedra. He's definitely not what I'd call benevolent, but you could worship a worse extraplanar lizard monster.

Spellbreaker
Shield, Artifact
(Requires Attunement)
“The natural order is restored, and for this, I thank you. Perhaps they have learned the folly of attempting to touch a Daedric Prince. Take this, with my blessing. May it bring you order."
Chosen of Peryite: You must have at least 19 Intelligence or Wisdom to attune to this shield. Additionally, Peryite demands strict adherence to the natural order. If you cast a Necromancy spell while attuned to this shield, it becomes a mundane shield until you complete a long rest.
Magical Shield: While attuned to this shield, you have a +3 bonus to your Armor class, in addition to the +2 granted by holding a shield.
Touched by Oblivion: While attuned to this shield, you can speak, read, and write in Infernal and Abyssal, even if you do not possess the ability to speak, read, and write in your native language.
Magicka Ward: While attuned to this shield, if you become the target of a spell or magical ability which would deal damage to you, you may reduce the damage you take by an amount equal to your Proficiency Bonus plus your Intelligence or Wisdom Modifier. If the source of damage is a leveled spell with a spell level lower than your Proficiency Bonus, as a reaction, you may counter the spell outright.

Gimme the Shatterband deets! I wanna know about Marax especially, how did she train to become a spellbreaker, how does she evoke it? What are her preferred weapons, what's her band's ages? (@commanderhorncleaver)
oooh this is going to be a fun one >:) (also somehow didn't see this until like the 7th, sorry about that!)
My spine warband event timeline is kinda sketchy at best, I definitely need to work on that lol I have a spineband masterpost type thing in the works though, so that'll be coming hopefully soon!
As for Marax being a spellbreaker, the sunspear descended version is probably in constant conflict with magic users, fighting against Palawa Joko and all. Now, what other group has a long history of fighting against magic users? That's right, the charr!
I imagine it started out as more of an ash legion technique, as they seem to be spearheading or at least in charge of the fight against flame in fireheart rise, and they'd be more likely to work alongside magic users, especially before the human-charr treaty is signed. (After the treaty, the other legions get more used to working with others lol.)
Blood legion was eager to train it's warriors to fight against spells, even if spellbreaker does definitely have some magical elements, it's mostly ignored and treated as a "proper" warrior's spec.
So, her spellbreaker training was closely involved with the legions, learning a little from Hirrius (since he's a ranger, he couldn't teach her, but he could tell her about the stories/history) and mostly from older blood legion charr, including her former Primus.
The meditation aspect was probably the hardest part for her to learn- being coolheaded during a fight was always more of euryale's specialty, but the way she casts is through reciting blood legion war/marching chants! anything with a solid cadence would work, but she's joined in on these chants so many times she doesn't really have to think about the words, it just clears her head enough for the spellbreaking to work!
most of her fighting focus is on breaking illusions and keeping her enemies from escaping >:) prides herself on being able to kinda hunt them down (drawing of marax using that one sight skill)
Tumblr media
her weapons of choice are dual axes/a rifle! Axes were always what she was good with in the fahrar, good for a fight and as a general use tool- they've proved pretty useful on long marches, especially when Reeva'd wanted a cookfire instead of the warband's usual fare of cold rations. She uses her axes in much the same way now that she's in the spine warband, but they've seen a lot more action since her time in steel. (the first warband that got mostly destroyed by barriden.)
Having a rifle's been less helpful- she's an average shot, and now that she's training as a spellbreaker it's easier to close gaps and make a ranged weapon less of a necessity, but it's nice to have around. (She totally doesn't try to impress Euryale with her targeting skills and fail hilariously, who gave you that idea?) She isn't above fighting with her claws, either, if it comes to that.

Book Review | Spellbreakers by August Niehaus
Author August Niehaus launches her new series, “The Library Attic Collection Presents” with Spellbreakers, a collection of a half-dozen stories. It reminds me of a Tardis, as it’s much bigger than you might think a 25K word book would be on the inside. I was delighted to learn that each short story was fully developed, with engaging characters supported by solid worldbuilding. And every tale is…

MtG Token: 4/4 Green Beasts
Magic: the Gathering has been around for 30 years. There are 27,000 unique cards and growing. And a lot of them create tokens. While the official tokens are great, I have a need to celebrate the artwork of our (mtg) ancestors. Let's celebrate older artwork with a new coat of paint.
Token: 4/4 green Beast
Rampaging Baloths is the most well know card making these Beasts.
There are a lot of beasts in MtG's history. Here are a few winners.
Ravenous Baloth from Onslaught by Arnie Swekel
Spellbreaker Behemoth from Alara Reborn by Jason Chan
Enormous Baloth from Legions by Mark Tedin
Blastoderm from Nemesis by Eric Peterson
Woolly Thoctar from Shards of Alara by Wayne Reynolds

The Angel Avacyn finishes off our Angel tokens. This is the token created by the Battle at the Helvault. This is a direct reskin of the official Avacyn token. The artwork is by Alix Branwyn.

Joaquim, the Spellbreaker
Dead serious and always ready for duty, Joaquim is one of the Brigade's very few Spellbreakers. An ancient elven tradition, these fighters are able to thwart almost any spellcaster in single combat. The most skilled mong them can silence an Archmage and create a field of disruption, that can thwart and dampen even the most potent incantations.
I have finished this piece very recently, playing with my pseudo-traditional style again. This time I have opted for b/w portraits (the last series had watercolor feel, not sure if you remember those!).
I honestly really enjoyed this style of clean drawing and shading, there is something very soothing about it and the result felt very satisfying. So much so, that I have decided to turn it into a series.
I hope you like how he turned out. Would you like to see some other Brigade character/fanart in this style? Let me know!
